Strengthen Your Grasp on Periodic Table To Improve Your Chemistry Learning
The Periodic Table was a gift to mankind by Dmitri Mendeleev. In the 19th Century, during the age of innovation when even the top scientists were often confused about the elements due to lack of standardisation and the language barriers. To solve this problem, in 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev came with a concept of organising various elements according to their properties and atomic numbers.
Today, even after 160 years of that innovation, the Periodic Table is still being taught as the most important lessons in any Chemistry Tuition. If you are a science student then it is imperative that you learn and memorise the periodic table. But remembering the entire table filled with 118 elements is not a simple task. You will be needing some special techniques to split the table into groups to memorise it easily. In the following, a detailed plan of action is described for you. This process will surely help you understand the intricacies of the Periodic Table.
Selecting The Right Periodic Table:
If you look into the internet you will find several periodic tables that are in black and white. These tables do not have any legends. You must choose a table that is properly colour-coded for easier understanding of element grouping.
Understanding Your Table:
Now that you have found an updated and properly colour-coded table. Let us understand the different categories of the elements. The major division among the elements is metals and non-metals. There is only one liquid metal we have that is Hg or Mercury, Br or Bromine is the only liquid non-metal. Everything else is either gas or liquid.
Understanding the letters and numbers:
Each element in the Periodic Table has its own separate block and the element is represented in a combination of letters and numbers. The letters are generally the short form of the element, for example, Hydrogen the first element is represented as H1 or H. But the second element Helium is written as He2.
So, what does the 1 or 2 written in subscript represent? It represents the atomic symbol. Therefore, the letter and number simply work as an abbreviation of the element.
Lastly, the atomic number is the total number of neutrons and protons each atom of the elements hold on their nucleus or core.
Understanding the Groups:
If you notice, each vertical column of the periodic table is marked as 1A, 2A, 3B, 4B, etc. These are known as groups. The elements which are arranged in these vertical groups due to their similar properties. Some are noble or non-reactive gases, some show metallic properties, etc.
Understanding the Periods:
The elements can also be seen in horizontal arrangements in rows. Each row of elements is called a period. Generally there are 7 periods in the periodic table. Just like the groups, the elements in the same periods show similar properties.
Understanding the Atomic Numbers and Atomic Radius:
The periodic table is also arranged in an increasing atomic number. The table starts with H or Hydrogen because it has the atomic number 1 or the nucleus of each hydrogen atom there is only one neutron and only one proton. While the last element is known as Element 118 or Oganesson or Og118.
The bigger the number, the bigger the atomic mass or size of the atom. This makes Hydrogen as the smallest element while Francium or Fr is considered having the largest atoms.
Lanthanides:
At the bottom of the table you will find two periods. These are generally rare earth metals and lanthanides. These are extremely rare and precious metals found on earth.
Conclusion:
Remembering all the 118 elements with a constant research being conducted to find out more elements like element 119 and further. But these little smart policies can help you memorise the elements along with their properties and type. But if you need some extra help you can contact Miracle Learning Centre, one of the best institutes offering excellent and affordable Chemistry Tuition in Singapore. Simplification of Precipitation equations: Mole Course (14)
Fundamental Chemistry: Moles and Concentration Calculations Course (14) Precipitation reactions occur when aqueous solutions react to produce a solid precipitate. These equations can be simplified similarly to ion equations. Initially, we list the ions participating in the reaction, then remove the ions that don’t get involved in the formation of the precipitate. Exercise 1 Write the…

sp2 Hybridization: Covalent Bonds Course (19)
Course Chemical Bonds: Covalent Bonding and Shapes of Molecules (19) Hybridization sp2 Hybrid Orbitals—Bond Angles of Approximately 120° In sp2 hybridization, the s orbital hybridizes with two p orbitals. We say “2” indicating the number of involved p orbitals. Notice, this leaves one p orbital unhybridized. This orbital typically forms the pi covalent bond. Here, carbon is sp2 hybridized,…
