The average American produces 1,704 pounds of garbage per year, roughly three times the global average, according to a new report by the research firm Verisk Maplecroft. Across 194 countries, the researchers found that the world produces 2.3 billion tons of municipal solid waste each year, which is enough to fill 822,000 Olympic-sized pools. Of this waste, just 16% is recycled, while 46% is disposed of unsustainably in ways that harm the environment.  [...] Countries like the US and Singapore are reaching their landfill capacity, while countries like China and Malaysia have refused to continue accepting trash exported from Western nations.  Although the United States accounts for 4% of the global population, it’s responsible for 12% of the municipal solid waste that’s created, and historically would ship a lot of trash to other countries.   China and India, meanwhile, account for 36% of the global population, but generate only 27% of all waste.
also according to a lot of studies the majority of garbage in the US is food waste which can 100% be composted and is the most environmentally destructive when sent to a landfill because it creates methane
Tumblr media
from this source
America has got a waste problem. An average American produces about 4.40 pounds of garbage per day and approximately three-quarters of a tonne per year. If you are thinking “this can’t possibly be right, there is no way I produce THAT MUCH”, get ready for another blow. The U.S.A holds the record of producing the highest amount of garbage in the world, more than Russia, India, and even China. All that trash has to end up somewhere and as a result, the 2,000 active landfills in the US are reaching their capacity. What will happen when we run out of the room? Well, let’s ask a better question. What can we do to manage our waste better and prevent a catastrophe? Overfilled landfills are a big problem. Some states decide to simply burn the landfills, as burning reduces the volume of the trash in the landfill significantly. This frees up a lot of space, but the problem of toxic gasses and fumes being released into the atmosphere persists. Not only do these gasses contribute to climate change, but they can also deteriorate human health and end up costing millions in medical expenses. On the other hand, simply leaving the landfills as they pose other issues. The chemical and biological reactions taking place in landfills can create a lot of issues as these chemicals leach into the ground and contaminate water that municipalities may extract for use in their water systems. The piles of organic garbage also release harmful methane, a greenhouse gas more 86 times more potent than carbon dioxide. So, what can be done to alleviate these issues?

The standard legend of India’s Green Revolution centers on two propositions. First, India faced a food crisis, with farms mired in tradition and unable to feed an exploding population; and second, Borlaug’s wheat seeds led to record harvests from 1968 on, replacing import dependence with food self-sufficiency.
Recent research shows that both claims are false.
India was importing wheat in the 1960s because of policy decisions, not overpopulation. After the nation achieved independence in 1947, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru prioritized developing heavy industry. U.S. advisers encouraged this strategy and offered to provide India with surplus grain, which India accepted as cheap food for urban workers.
Meanwhile, the government urged Indian farmers to grow nonfood export crops to earn foreign currency. They switched millions of acres from rice to jute production, and by the mid-1960s India was exporting agricultural products.
Borlaug’s miracle seeds were not inherently more productive than many Indian wheat varieties. Rather, they just responded more effectively to high doses of chemical fertilizer. But while India had abundant manure from its cows, it produced almost no chemical fertilizer. It had to start spending heavily to import and subsidize fertilizer.
India did see a wheat boom after 1967, but there is evidence that this expensive new input-intensive approach was not the main cause. Rather, the Indian government established a new policy of paying higher prices for wheat. Unsurprisingly, Indian farmers planted more wheat and less of other crops.
Once India’s 1965-67 drought ended and the Green Revolution began, wheat production sped up, while production trends in other crops like rice, maize and pulses slowed down. Net food grain production, which was much more crucial than wheat production alone, actually resumed at the same growth rate as before.
But grain production became more erratic, forcing India to resume importing food by the mid-1970s. India also became dramatically more dependent on chemical fertilizer.
According to data from Indian economic and agricultural organizations, on the eve of the Green Revolution in 1965, Indian farmers needed 17 pounds (8 kilograms) of fertilizer to grow an average ton of food. By 1980, it took 96 pounds (44 kilograms). So, India replaced imports of wheat, which were virtually free food aid, with imports of fossil fuel-based fertilizer, paid for with precious international currency.
Today, India remains the world’s second-highest fertilizer importer, spending US$17.3 billion in 2022. Perversely, Green Revolution boosters call this extreme and expensive dependence “self-sufficiency.”

The divine blend of spices needed to make curry first reached Southeast Asia about 2,000 years ago, when the region began trading with the Indian subcontinent, according to an analysis of ancient spice residue.
The new project analyzed 12 different spice grinding tools unearthed at the ancient trading port of Oc Eo, in modern-day Vietnam, by washing them with water and chemicals. This produced hundreds of tiny fragments that the researchers painstakingly identified (to a reasonable degree of certitude) under a microscope. The results sounded like a shopping list for making curry: turmeric, ginger, fingerroot, sand ginger, galangal, clove, nutmeg and cinnamon.
“These spices are indispensable ingredients used in the making of curry in South Asia today,” the paper says.
Ancient Trading Spices
Where did all these spices comes from?
They could have come from the surrounding countryside. Farmers in Southeast Asia made many of these crops themselves, and if not, they could have imported the seeds and gotten started.
On the other hand, the turmeric could have easily come from India, where use of the spice dates back thousands of years. And the ginger and cloves may have come from India as well, or maybe China.
Cinnamon was widely traded at the time and may have come all the way from Israel.
The galangal, fingerroot and sand ginger are native to Southeast Asia and could easily have come from nearby soils. These more specialized spices are still used in the region’s curry paste.
Footed Grinding Slabs
As a testament to the spice trade’s popularity, the spice grinders made up the majority of the stone tools recovered from Oc Eo and another, nearby city called Angkor Borei. The original archaeological dig at Oc Eo found numerous footed grinding slabs, which look like little stone workbenches for grinding spices – which is what they likely were. Versions of these slabs are still sometimes used in the traditional preparation of curry.
The largest slab recovered measured 2.5 feet by 1 foot. Researchers found it buried not far from a piece of charcoal that dated to about A.D. 250, which hinted at when curry first made its way to the area.
Oc Eo
At that time, the city would have been not just importing and exporting goods but making them as well, according to the paper. Residents raised religious monuments and shaped metal tools, glass jewelry and pottery.
All the while, they would have worked to trade and process many different spices. Archaeologists working there even found an intact nut that dated to about A.D. 200, and it still “yielded a nutmeg aroma,” the paper says.
Now part of Vietnam, Oc Eo once belonged to the ancient kingdom of Funan, which maintained a base of power further up the Mekong River.
In Oc Eo, culture prospered between the first and eighth centuries, during the latter years of the Iron Age. As the site’s ancient canals filled with ships, Buddhism and Hinduism left their own marks on the sprawling complex, including a possible contribution to curry cooking. The need to dye the Buddhist monks’ robes yellow may have first prompted Oc Eo to import turmeric, the paper says.

topaz
Tumblr media
With the leaves changing into fire colors in the Northern Hemisphere during November it only seems fitting that this month's birthstones also come, most commonly, in colors of brown, gold, red and orange. Let's talk about topaz first.
From the Middle Ages backward, 'topaz' was usually used to refer to any yellow stone (its believed, for instance, that the 'topaz' referred to on the high priest's breastplate in the Old Testament was probably a citrine). However, modern scientific distinctions believe that most references to topaz in older historic texts were actually either peridot, citrine (November's other birthstone) or chrysoberyl. True topaz is a much heavier stone than any of these, surprisingly heavy for a stone of its chemical makeup in fact. In its natural form, most topaz is actually a clear stone. Its variety of colors come from either heat or additional minerals while it was forming. 'In the wild' topaz can be found in colors that range from red to pink to grey to various shades of brown as well as yellow or even violet. Blue topaz is rare as well and often very pale with heat (or radiation) being used to darken its color. 'Mystic topaz' is topaz that has been heat treated and then painted with a coat of metallic oxide to give it an iridescent look. Pink topaz is called imperial topaz. November uses the orange topaz, known as the precious topaz, as its birth stone of choice.
Topaz deposits can found on every single continent, with Brazil being the largest exporter of the stone. The largest topaz every found comes from the Minas Gerais mine in Brazil in fact, a boulder sized topaz that weighted 596 pounds (271 kilos). Topaz is also one of the hardest stones, coming in at 8 on the Mohs hardness scale (a diamond is a 10 on the scale), yet, because of its atomic bonding structure if hit at just the right angle it can splinter.
Being around as long as it has, there are a lot of superstitions that surround topaz. In ancient Rome, the topaz protected travels on the road. In ancient Greece, wearing a topaz was supposed to grant you strength while in India, a topaz worn over the heart granted long life, beauty and intelligence. Wearing topaz on your left arm in Medieval Europe was a good way to turn away the evil eye and other curses. It was also medicinal, believed to increase body heat against fevers and colds. During the Renaissance, topaz was useful for controlling anger and dispelling evil magic spells. In England, the topaz was said to help cure madness. It is associated with love, wealth (its golden color can attract gold, especially if the stone is set in gold) and health. It is supposed to aid in digestion and weight loss as well as arthritis. It is supposed to help attract love. Saint Hildegard recommended soaking topaz in wine for three days and nights and then rubbing it on the eyes to improve sight. It can also supposedly make its wearer invisible. Keeping a topaz stone under your pillow is said to help keep nightmares away. Its said to help cure sleepwalking. It can, thanks to its golden color, also be associated with the sun and fire. A blue topaz is the wedding anniversary gift for the fourth anniversary and the imperial topaz for the twenty-third.
The 1740, Braganza Diamond of Portugal was so clear and bright it was believed to be a diamond. It is, in fact, a topaz.
