now that i think about it i don't really hear of wizards who are missing fingers because they "had a hand in a reaction"
I was a wizard's apprentice, but we didn't get anything done because he kept putting more and more PPE on me while explaining the importance of safety. By the end I was wearing two hazmat suits, several pairs of gloves, three boots and a giant gasmask.

Going to do a small ramble since janitors been getting some misgendering.
Imagine if for a second, janitor just corrected people on their pronouns. Like, sure their in a chaotic fast food place but the least a customer can do is accept the pronouns the fucking cleaner of the establishment uses. Maybe after a long hard day of work, FF! Reader just gives sulli a hug. They deserve it even in this murder happy and very questionably run fast food joint. Maybe they even just chill after hours in the building to just hang out. Idk personally think there's not enough fluff for them. (Side thing : what if janitor just had a they/them pin? I've seen more recently at least in my area service workers have rainbow or fandom pins and I think it'd fit them.) -đanon (sorry I haven't spoken in awhile, been very busy with life)
[I'll do you one better- FF Reader being the one to correct the customer. TW: Mention of misgendering]
"Um, excuse me, Sir? There's still no paper towels in the bathroom."
Why do they even bother? They've expressed their grievances to this customer multiple times - both in fact of them being busy with other work, and that the customer had mistaken them for something they weren't. They've tried to let it slide. They've tried to gently inform the customer of their preferred pronouns. No dice. Their head was pounding from the fumes of the chemical they worked with, and this was doing nothing to help it. Why did they come into work today.
"Listen, I'll get to it once I'm done mopping. How many times do I have to tell you I'm not a-"
Soft squeaks resonate from the freshly cleaning floor as heavy steps race across it. A hand nabs the bottle of cleanser out of the janitor's hands - aiming the nozzle directly in line with the customer's eyes as its finger clamps down on the trigger.
The customer screeches - throwing their hands over their face to shield themselves as their eyes sting and vision blurs.
"Begone." Steadying your aim, you blast the customer with another face full of the unholy solution filing the bottle in your hands. Had to be some powerful stuff to get out the stains you see on the daily. Despite their arms blocking majority of their face, you manage to get a spray of the mixture in their mouth. They retch - tears and saliva dripping down their face as they spit.
"Agh! What the hell is wrong with you!"
"The fuck's wrong with you? I've been watching you all morning. There's a line between a mistake and being an ignorant asshole, and you've crossed it buddy. Go on, get - shoo, get the fuck outta here."
"I hope you know you've just lost a paying customer!"
"You say that like it's a bad thing. Go ruin someone's else's day."
The Janitor watches as you chase the customer out of the establishment, hurling obscenities and hitting them with another jet of cleanser whenever they turn to look back. You toss the now empty bottle at the hood of their car as they crawl in and speed away. Their heart pumps so loudly they can barely hear your steps as you return to their side.
"Sorry about using all your cleanser. Wanna go pretend to look for more in storage room and sneak out the back?"
The Janitor deadpans. "I used to think I was in love you.... It's gone far beyond just a thought now."
"I know." You throw your arm around their shoulder - allowing them to dump their weight on you as they go weak in the knees from the contact. You half carry them out the back door, sneaking off to where their van was parked outside. You hold your hand out for their keys which they readily give you. You help them into the passenger seat before walking around to the driver's side and hopping in. The Janitor's hand reaches over the divider, stopping just short of your arm.
"You good?"
Their head falls to your shoulder - voice strained as they rub at where their eyes would be. "Yea....Yea, I'm good. Thanks by the way."
You place your hand over theirs, squeezing it gently. "Eh, you and I are the one's keeping the hellhole in shape.. You deserve more respect than you get sometimes... Ready to ditch this place for the night?"
"....Please?..."

The Fume Hood Incident
A continuation of this post where @stealingyourbones and I regale tales of Mr. T, our high school science teacher that was the inspiration behind my addition to the popular Danny Phantom Science Teacher AU post that sparked the whole thing off.
I was able to catch the incident on camera & after rewatching it, decided that not enough of peoples faces were shown to be able to discern their identify & have decided to post it here.
â
First, context.
It was the last day of my freshman year of high school.
Mr. T was donated a god awful teapot made by a student in ceramics with the only stipulation being that he âblow it up.â
And according to my notesapp notes, he reportedly said, âOne of my great pleasures in life is finding common regular normal things in life and making them go boom.â Right before we left our class to do the experiment in the lab classroom next door that had a fume hood. And from what I remember of the man, that absolutely fits.
I do not remember what chemicals Mr. T used to make the reaction but I do remember that we were extensively warned that it gave off noxious fumes and shouldnât look directly at the light as it could damage our eyes.
Trudging into the other classroom, Mr. T set up the experiment in the fume hood.
At first, everything was going well. The teapot exploded and the room was bathed in red light.
Then we looked up.
You see, when you install a fume hood, generally you connect it to a chimney so the fumes can go out. The fucker that installed it did it improperly so the noxious fumes went DIRECTLY INTO THE CLASSROOM.
Immediately Mr. T evacuated the room and rushed us into the hallway.
The fire alarm went off.
The class, giddy from the feeling that we just blew something up and made the fire alarm go off in the last day of school, we weâre ecstatic.
We cheered.
â
Naturally, the faculty were kinda pissed because the alarms once again were set off by Mr. T & they had to call off the firetrucks that were auto-called and weâre charged for it.
Mr. T had to report the incident to the same cop as the magnesium incident and he was so proud to tell the officer it finally wasnât his fault the fire alarm went off.
The school sued the installation company for incorrectly installing the fume hood and got it properly working the next year.
That day will be a core memory of mine that I will treasure til I kick the bucket.
-
And finally, the video.
#the fumehood incident#The only damn tumblr story where â& everyone cheered/clappedâ is actually true#When my class was standing out on the lawn waiting for the fire department to clear the building and let us back in#We were all bragging to our friends in other classes that WE were the ones to set off the alarm and explaining the incident#we were so proud of ourselves#bones speaks

Hello
I just finished reading the chemistry teacher Danny phantom post and saw you and your twin mention a really chaotic chemistry teacher you had
It's fine if not, but I was wondering if you had any more stories about that teacher?
They sounded really fun and I am now curious what other antics they got up to.
Sorry if I'm asking too much.
Oh no absolutely I can! That man was my chemistry teacher for two years and was my favorite teacher of all time.
Ok sO.
- The Fume Hood Incident (twin shall explain @bonebrokebuddy)
- making an absolute SHIT ton of thermite when we couldnât inhale boron gas as our last chemistry club experiment. We initially wanted to melt a hole in a junk car with it but the dude who offered his car backed out :(
- did the âexploding gummy bearâ experiment that made a lot of very toxic gas for shits and giggles. We had to stay in another teachers classroom for the next class period because the room had ventilate for a while.
- once burned some extra magnesium for fun DIRECTLY UNDER THE FIRE DETECTOR and made the entire school leave because the fire alarm got set off in the dead of winter. Things akin to this happened two more times.
- since the first incident, he found out how to TURN OFF the fire detectors in his room whenever heâs doing experiments involving fire. Evidently he failed twice in this exercise.
- self medicated ADHD with coffee and drank at least 3 pots of the stuff during school hours. He had his own coffee machine in the classroom. Once did a presentation on potency stuff and brought in espresso for the class to drink. That man drank a whole pot of it before the end of the school day.
- during said coffee drinking experiments, he broke his one mug he used and used a new beaker for 2 weeks until he bothered to get a new one. Rinse and repeat this exact scenario from the beginning of his teaching until he left.
- would buy pure chemical or whatever un watered down esque chemicals are and would lower the molar count himself because âhe didnât want to pay for waterâ and did it IN THE CLASS ROOM BY HIMSELF WITH NO FUME HOOD. (Chemistry terms are bad I havenât had a chem class in 5 years)
- this man is now a college professor I think. Where he rightfully should be because there is no way the experiments we did with him were given a green light through the wavers we signed.
- he bought the school a blast shield with the rest of the chemistry club funds to encourage the next chem teacher to do more dangerous experiments. (They never did :( )
These are just annecdotes. If @bonebrokebuddy wants to add onto it theyâre free to do so :)

Once again, some engineering undergraduates have overestimated their own prowess and summoned something when they should have been finishing their homework. The engineering TAs would like to take this moment to remind all the engineering majors that it is not a part of our jobs to track down whatever you summon and that you will fail any and all assignments that summon anything. As per university policy, we cannot grade summonings.
As a precaution, until further notice, the makerâs space is now closed to all students. Access will only be allowed under the direct supervision of a TA (good luck finding us) or a professor (assuming you can find one outside of office hours). All senior theses must be hypothetical - any practical theses proposals have been retroactively rescinded. Laboratory research is expected to continue as usual.
Safety is everyoneâs responsibility when working with the unknown! Your TAs have prepared some helpful reminders to reduce the chances this happens again.
Complete the mandatory Elsewhere Lab Safety Training! If you do not complete this by the end of the quarter, things will befall you! Donât test our patience!
Never work alone in the lab! Not only is this bad practice for most experiments, but two are better than one when it comes to stopping unusual lab problems.
Carry your iron rod, salt packet, and water bottle at all times. Replacement rods are available at the academic advising office, salt packets can be taken from the dining halls, and water bottles can be found at the athletics department.
All projects must be made out of iron. For iron alloys and composites, consult a TA, professor, or postdoc to see if the iron percentage is higher than the threshold.
Follow university policy regarding safety best practices in the classroom and around campus.
Bioengineers: only use samples acquired directly from other labs. Neither Elsewhere University nor the Engineering Department can guarantee that samples arrive uncontaminated (remember the Great Homunculi disaster?).
Electrical engineers: the efficacy of copper against the Fair Folk is still yet to be determined. Do not listen to the upperclassmen who tell you that copper works just as well as iron. This has been suspected to be a way of hazing new students and violated the university hazing policies.
Chemical engineers: use the fume hoods. Accidents happen much less often when working in a well-ventilated area.
Civil engineers: your steel pins may contain too little iron to be useful. Do not rely on them in a pinch. Yes, they look cool, but itâs better to be safe than sorry. Your faculty advisors will be conducting iron checks to ensure you have enough iron on you at all times.
Mechanical engineers: how many times do we have to remind you that just because something could work doesnât mean itâs a good idea to build it? Remember the machine that nonstop summoned things for weeks? And how hard that was to stop? Please donât build that again, or anything like it.
And, as always, report accidents to the relevant safety authorities. The sooner the damage is evaluated, the sooner it can be contained and fixed.
On behalf of the entire department, we preemptively thank you for adjusting to this change in departmental policy.
Please understand that your midterm grades will be coming out late, as we are working hard to understand what was summoned and how: if anyone has information about it, please direct it to the Deanâs office.
- your engineering TAs

Laboratory Safety: The Hierarchy of Controls
Though many people may think of safety glasses or lab coats as the safest way to protect oneself in a laboratory setting, personal protective equipment (PPE) is actually considered the last and least effective step. The goal with safety in laboratories is almost always to make the use of PPE unnecessary or redundant - with the caveat and acknowledgement that sometimes, that just isn't possible.
Nevertheless, let's take a look at the steps that come before PPE:
Elimination of the hazard. Examples might be restricting the use of extension cords (possible trip hazard); doing work at ground level (e.g., eliminating the use of a ladder and bringing the work to the floor); or updating old or faulty equipment that might be more dangerous than modern versions.
Substitution of the hazard. Similar to elimination, examples include replacing chemicals with less dangerous versions that can perform the same task, or using less electricity or temperature.
Engineering controls serve to isolate people from hazards. Examples include chemical fume hoods, an interlock system for a laser setup, or remote controls to operate equipment from a distance.
Administrative controls are the rules and regulations that govern a laboratory space. They can include working on a buddy system, additional safety training, mandating rest breaks, putting up warning signs and labels, and developing standard operating procedures.

*Note: If you are looking for lab safety resources, any university with working laboratories should have guidelines available. Just keep in mind that as the rules get more specific, some may be location dependent (i.e., based on the local laws of the state, province, country, etc.).
