Women have many belongings. It used to vex Nanami. But it doesn’t anymore.
The first thing to migrate to his home, was your face lotion. He has a face lotion, a perfectly serviceable one, but you insisted on bringing your own. Your routine was important to you, you had told him, and Nanami understood. Routines, rules, structure – these are all things he has always respected, found meaning in. And so, in his bathroom, his drugstore razor, toothbrush, and facewash sat together, lined up like toy soldiers, right next to a luxurious indigo jar of face cream.
The rest of your routine follows shortly: the lilac bottle of mist that smells like aloe, the golden serum that smells like summertime, and the periwinkle tube of your green tea face wash. Your bergamot and sandalwood soap linger on his pillow, and when he can’t smell you on his sheets anymore, longing sits heavy and sticky in his throat.
Your clothes are next. Amidst his practical navy, gray, and blacks, appear pops of warm lilac, royal blue, and torched orange. He doesn’t mind it in the least – it would be entirely unreasonable for him to demand that you stop bringing such colorful clothes in his home, especially when he never really wants you to leave.
When the two of you finally just bite the bullet and put your name on the lease, Nanami imagines that his life will certainly become more colorful. But he doesn’t have the first idea of how many more things will be in his house.
All his life, Nanami has lived quietly, abstemiously. He is a jujutsu sorcerer – while his non-sorcerer peers were learning trigonometry, he was learning how to kill curses and how to die as a soldier dies: with resolve and bravery, to the bitterest end. His life has been fat trimmed from steak, practical solid color towels, plastic storage bins with plenty of clearing near the edge, never packed to capacity. A man who walks on the very edge of life and death doesn’t require more than the necessities. The very few things he indulges in are sensible: good whiskey, grade A rice, custom leather shoes (no broguing) built to take a beating.
You bring in your life to his, and it is completely different. You’re striped linens, fresh flowers, scented candles on every corner. Baby blue drinking glasses shaped like beer cans, artisanal ceramicware made by friends locally. Your life is marked by comfort, simple pleasure, and (dare he say it) the sweetest, most innocent frivolity. He supposes it’s really what he loves most about you, honestly. He’s always tended drawn closer to brighter, bolder personalities: earnest and warm, like Haibara and Itadori, not bombastic and irreverent, like Gojo or Tsukumo. You belong in the same shades of sunlight as Haibara and Itadori, but…tender. Like the dream-like throw of warm, rose tipped dawn that thaws the chill of his lonely apartment.
Now, in the mornings, he doesn’t wake to the desolate silence of a man alone. He wakes to the sound of your fluffy slippers in the kitchen, the smell of dark roast coffee, the sight of your toiletries sitting side by side in the bathroom, cozy and couple-like.
Somewhere between your checker print tea kettle, and the warmth of your body on the sheets, Nanami falls so in love with you that he looks back on his life and wonders how he ever lived, starved of the sun that is you, for so long.

Daughter of Discord Rewritten Chapter 2: Special Delivery
2:00pm
"We're almost there!" Pinkie Pie chimed as she led Fluttershy and Discord towards Sugar Cube Corner. The gravel path crunched satisfyingly under their hooves, and Celestia's sun was sharing its warm spring embrace onto their backs. Fluttershy's face glowed bright and her eyelashes bat away in the glare of the beautiful sunlight.
"You sure you don't want me to carry you?"
She shook her head as she steadied herself. "No, I can handle it. Pinkie, what's this all about, anyway?"
"You'll see!" Pinkie snorted as she bounced up the bakery steps.
Fluttershy was about to follow her when Discord scooped her into his arms.
"Oh dearie, you're such a gentleman!" She giggled.
As soon as they were inside, every pony jumped out of hiding and shouted:
"SURPRISE!"
Fluttershy gasped at the decorated room before her. Her five best friends as well as Spike and her three favorite fillies were there. On the wall was a banner reading: 'Congratulations!'
"What is…?"
"We threw you a baby shower!" Pinkie Pie squealed.
"But it isn't even born yet, it can't even take baths..." Discord said, confused.
The mares laughed.
"A baby shower is a party for expecting mothers," Twilight explained. "Her female friends organize it and bring gifts for the new baby."
Tears filled Fluttershy's eyes. "Girls, this is wonderful! Thank you so much!"
"Don't thank us yet!" Pinkie insisted. "You haven't opened your presents yet!"
She led her friend to the stack of presents and handed her one wrapped in pink, with a green bow.
Discord turned to the young spike, who was now taller and sharper than before. He even had wings now!
"if this is a mare's party, then why are we here? You're a little man," discord accentuated with a noogie, "and I'm... Some sort of he-what-who-thing." Spike shrugged and sat on Discord's shoulders.
"Open mine first!"
Fluttershy was about to sit down when Discord summoned a comfortable pillow beneath her. Pinkie placed the gift in her lap and Fluttershy began unwrapping it. She opened the box to reveal a yellow and orange hat with a green propeller. She took it out and looked at it questioningly.
"I saw it in the hat shop the other day and thought it would look cutesy wootsy on your baby!" Pinkie said excitedly.
Discord twirled the propeller. "It is kind of cute."
"Thank you, Pinkie," Fluttershy smiled. "I'm sure our child will love it."
"Now for the one from me!" Rarity said, handing her a box in purple wrapping and a periwinkle bow.
Inside were six sets of foal-sized foot pajamas in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.
"Of course, when the baby arrives, I can make a whole new set with proper measurements on the case that it isn't... Pony shaped."
"They're beautiful, Rarity," Fluttershy said.
She opened Twilight's present next: an illustrated book on fairytales to read to the child. Then Rainbow Dash gave her a red, green, and white rattle, which she explained had been hers as a foal.
Next was Applejack's present: a baby bonnet with apples embroidered along the edge.
"It was mine," Applejack explained, "I figured you should have it."
"Me next!" Apple Bloom bounced!
The filly gave her a small quilt. It was checkered in brown and yellow. Each yellow square was decorated with a pink butterfly matching Fluttershy's cutie mark and each brown square had a black and white spiral in the center.
"I made it myself!" Apple Bloom said proudly. "I incorporated both the parents' personalities into it, so that your baby may always be reminded how special she is!"
"Apple Bloom," Fluttershy uttered, "this is beautiful!"
She slid out of her seat and gave the filly a hug. The dragon then hopped off of Discord with his gift.
"I had to ask Twilight's permission for this first," he said.
In the box was an old stuffed green dragon, covered in felt armor.
"This is Sir Lionheart," Spike explained. "Twilight gave him to me after she took me home, but I've kind of grown out of it. I'm sure Discord Jr. will like it!"
"I have a toy for the baby too!" Scootaloo announced. She brought out a tiny red scooter with a yellow bow on it. "This was my first scooter, but I've gotten too big for it now."
"And I have a record of my favorite lullabies!" Sweetie Belle said, holding up said record.
"Oh, thank you, everyone!" Fluttershy exclaimed. "These are all such wonderful presents!"
"We're not done," Twilight declared. "We all pitched in on this one."
Pinkie Pie bounced upstairs, followed by the cowgirl. The returned with a wooden crib painted glittery green and decorated with pink roses on the side. The cushion was feathered and the laced pillow was made of silk. Fluttershy was sobbing with a smile.
"You are all such wonderful friends and I know our baby is going to have the best aunts, and cousin, in the world!"
They all moved into a group hug when suddenly, Fluttershy felt a sharp pain in her belly. She let out a cry and clutched her stomach. Her friends backed away as Discord flew to her side.
"Honey, what's wrong?!" he pleaded.
"The baby," she wheezed. "I think it's coming!"
"Now?! But it's too early!"
"Tell that to the baby!"
The broken water spread from the floor.
"But it's only been nine months!" Rarity exclaimed.
"that's the issue," Twilight said frantically. "We need to get her to the hospital."
Discord did not waste a second to teleport her out of there, leaving the eight ponies and dragon alone in silence.
...
"Guess we're walking."
The hospital staff was caught by surprise when Discord came barging into the emergency room, pushing Fluttershy on a stretcher.
"The baby's coming, the baby's coming!" he screamed frantically.
"What?" Dr. Stable uttered. "The baby's not due for another two months!"
"Well, it's impatient! It is my kid, after all!"
The doctor was quick and fast, leading the couple to the maternity ward. On the way, they passed by Derpy.
"Fluttershy!" she exclaimed. "I thought you weren't due for another two months!"
Fluttershy's breathing staggered. "So did I, but the baby had other plans!"
"Sweet! Our kids are going to have the same birthday!"
Derpy's stretcher steered away while Fluttershy's entered another room.
"I'll need to get an x-ray…" Dr. Stable said.
Discord summoned up the device and hung it over his wife's stomach. The doctor examined it with wide eyes.
"Yep, the foal's a preemie, but it's safe enough that we can deliver without harm to it. It will have to stay in the NICU until it's ready."
"Then what are we waiting for?" the draconequus demanded. "You're the doctor! Please help my wife!"
Dr. Stable called for Nurses Sweetheart and Coldheart. They put on their scrubs and masks and got the patient into position. Discord had summoned up a mask as well and tightly held his wife's hoof.
The five ponies, three fillies and dragon paced around the waiting room. They stiffened when they heard Fluttershy's scream.
"What are they doing to her?!" Pinkie Pie squealed.
"I'm sure she's fine," Twilight said calmly.
When Dr. Stable entered the room, the duchess jumped out of her seat.
"Is she still alive?!" she asked frantically.
The doctor laughed. "Fluttershy has successfully given birth to a healthy baby girl and is going to be fine."
Every pony gasped.
"A girl?" Pinkie repeated. "This is fantastic!"
"Wait," Rarity said. "What does it look like?"
Fluttershy sobbed into her husband's chest.
"She's okay my queen, just small. She's okay."
"I only got to hold her for a second..."
Discord needed to distract her, keep her mind off of her filly in the NICU.
Discord scratched his head. "She looks so…normal."
The infant was an earth pony with a pink coat and bounding curls of purple and white hair on her head.
"Isn't that what you wanted?" Fluttershy sniffled. "You said you didn't want our child to be judged by her looks like you were."
"Yeah, but…how will people know she's ours?"
The pegasus lay in thought. "I don't think it matters dear, she's ours, and..."
Discord held her hoof. "If we're loud enough with our pride, ponies will know."
Fluttershy chuckled. "Y'know, I've got an earth pony grandma on my Dad's side. I guess the genes just skipped mine and my dad's generations."
Weeks later, NICU visiting hours.
"It's mine alright!" He bent down and tickled the infant. Her eyes were bright spirals with no pupils. "Cootchie-cootchie-coo!" The baby let out a laugh as she attempted to squirm away from the delightful torture. "Aw, look at her! Isn't she just an adorable little screwball?" His face lit up. "That's it! We'll call her Screwball!... If you want to, that is."
Fluttershy smiled as she caressed her baby through the glass. "Of course, it's perfect."
"Nah, but that's why it's good."
"Which one is it?!" Pinkie demanded, eagerly pressing her face against the window of the nursery.
"The one in the middle," Nurse Sweetheart said, pointing.
The ponies turned their attention to the pink foal sucking on her hoof.
"she's…" Rainbow speculated, "…normal."
Screwball then opened her swirly eyes.
"Never mind."
Every pony jumped as Discord appeared behind them. "I know, isn't she precious? We named her Screwball!"
"How lovely," Rarity cooed.
"Aw, she's so cute!" Pinkie squeaked.
"We had another that day. Nurse Sweetheart explained, "from a Miz Muffins. Maybe you know her?"
"You mean Derpy?" Rainbow asked. She mumbled, "no one calls her muffins, dude."
The nurse pointed to the cradle beside Screwball's. Lying inside was a gray unicorn with blonde hair. Her eyes were looking in opposite directions.
"That's Derpy's alright," the pegasus confirmed. "What's its name?"
"She called her Dinky," the nurse replied. "Dinky Doo."
Screwball stared in wonder at the large ponies looking at her. She thought they were quite funny, especially the pink one. She then imagined what it would be like to tug on that beautiful poofy hair.
She turned her head as the baby in the crib next to her started crying. She could tell this pony was different from the others because of her eyes, and seemed drawn to her. She wanted her to stop crying and a pacifier suddenly appeared in the unicorn's mouth. The ponies saw this and gasped.
"Celestia save her." Discord said in awe. "Oh, oh not now. Not with the magic..." He grimaced. She was like him, with the problems he would have had at her age.
"A baby with Discord's powers?" Spike uttered.
Twilight shook with anxiety. Or was it excitement at the prospect of a pony with chaotic magic? In any case, she whispered:
"oh boy."

Things you didn't know about board games
Many of us loving playing board games and people have been playing them for millennia. Here's some fun facts about this excellent pastime
1. We have been playing board games for millennia
Chess, checkers, backgammon and Go all have origins in the ancient world. King Tut was buried with multiple sets of an Egyptian game called senet. Hundreds of pieces of Greek pottery depict Ajax and Achilles hunched over a board in the midst of play. And the Ashanti people of Ghana are believed to have created a board game called wari, which you may know as the count-and-capture game mancala.
2. It wasn’t until the 19th century that board games began to be sold commercially
The first, The Mansion of Happiness, came out in England in 1800. The “mansion” was heaven, and players raced to get there. Decades later, an American named Milton Bradley reworked— and rebranded—it as The Checkered Game of Life.
3. Ludo has roots in ancient India, where it was called pachisi
Pachisi is from the Hindi word for “twenty-five,” the highest possible outcome of a single throw. But whereas Americans only tweaked the name to Parcheesi, the British decided to call it Ludo (‘lew-doh), Latin for “I play.” So when Englishman Anthony E Pratt developed his murder-mystery board game in 1943, he called it Cluedo, playing on Ludo. (In some countries, it’s called Clue.)
4. Around the world, the colourful cast of Cluedo can look quite different
Professor Plum was originally called Dr Orange in Spain. Mr Green goes by Chef Lettuce in Chile. Mrs Peacock is Mrs Purple in Brazil and Mrs Periwinkle in France, and in Switzerland, she’s Captain Blue, a man.
5. Board games occasionally inspire screenwriters
There’s the 1985 mystery Clue, the 2012 action movie Battleship and the 2023 fantasy film Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves.
6. At least one board game is being adapted into a television show
The game's creator was a famous French filmmaker , Albert Lamorisse, who wrote and directed the 1956 Oscar-winner The Red Balloon, also created a board game he called La Conquête du Monde (Conquest of the World).
Parker Brothers, an American toy and game manufacturer, introduced it to the US soon after, and renamed it Risk.
7. Another game inventor, Alfred Butts, called his game a couple of other names before Scrabble
Butts first called his creation Lexiko, then Criss Cross Words, before settling on Scrabble—a word that means “to hold on to something.” The hugely popular game has been translated into 29 languages and more than 150 million sets have been sold around the world.
8. Over a game of Scrabble, Canadians Chris Haney and Scott Abbott came up with the idea for their game, Trivial Pursuit
Its success launched a years-long legal battle with an American encyclopedist who claimed Haney took trivia from his books, something Haney readily admitted to doing. In the end, the courts decided you can’t steal trivia and dismissed the suit. During the 1980s, Trivial Pursuit outsold even Monopoly, racking up $800 million in sales in 1984 alone.
9. At the highest levels of play, it’s not all fake money
The winner of the World Chess Tournament takes home up to 60 per cent of the €2 million purse, with the runner-up receiving the smaller share. Even the Monopoly world champion takes home real cash: US$20,580, the amount that comes in a standard Monopoly game.
10. Arguably the wrong person is credited with the creation of Monopoly
The American who sold Monopoly to Parker Brothers in the 1930s, Charles Darrow, often receives the credit for creating the game. But it was another American, Elizabeth Magie, who, decades earlier, earned a patent for her invention, The Landlord’s Game.
Players purchased railroads, paid rent and occasionally ended up in jail. Ironically, Magie’s aim with the game was to show the evils of accumulating wealth by bankrupting others.
11. Monopoly was a polarising game in communist countries
Fidel Castro banned it in Cuba, and it was also banned in China for much of the 20th century. But an even more dramatic bit of board game history occurred during the Second World War. Since prisoners of war in Germany were allowed board games, American troops hid maps, compasses and real money inside Monopoly sets to help them escape.
12. The idea for the kids’ classic game Candy Land came from Eleanor Abbott, an American polio patient
In 1949, Abbott wanted to create something for children to play in quarantine. In fact, illness has served as game inspiration many times. In the British mobile-app-turned-board game known as Plague, players take on the role of deadly diseases trying to mutate and spread across the world. Conversely, in Pandemic, created by an American, players try to contain the spread of diseases and discover cures.
13. Thousands of new games are released each year and there's annual awards for the best
How can you tell which ones are worth buying? One reliable indicator is the Spiel des Jahres (“Game of the Year” in German), a prestigious award given each summer by a jury of (mostly German) game critics who volunteer to play and vote for the winning games. Previous award recipients include Settlers of Catan, Dominion and Ticket to Ride.

Felicity
A/n: So. I finally got the energy to write up a quick, original short story and I wanted to post it with the potential for peer review. Enjoy? Send feedback maybe? Thank you. :0)
Word Count: 1038
Genre: Short Story/Thriller
TWs: I don't want to spoil the twist but it's only fair that I put in big bold letters that THIS PIECE CONTAINS THEMES OF NECROPHILIA, as well as death in general, denial, and mentions of food.
They buried Felicity today. I don’t know why they went through all the trouble of a funeral when she’s been sitting at home, perfectly fine, all afternoon. A waste of a gorgeous white coffin, I’d say. Her parents wanted me to give a eulogy, but what could I possibly detail when the love of my life simply wasn’t dead?
I stayed until it was too awkward to remain. When I retired to my car, I was prevented from leaving by a knock on the window. My brother, Doyle, on the other side of the glass.
“Hey. How’re you holding up?”
I shrug, shifting in the leather-coated driver’s seat. “I’m fine,” I answer plainly.
He nods solemnly. “I’ll come by and check up on you later, alright?”
“Oh. Alright.” I nod back. “I’ll see you then.” He studies me with untraceable eyes before patting the edge of the car door with an air of finality and walking off. I roll the window back up and back out of the parking lot of Saint Cassidy Cemetery. It’s a nice cemetery. I wouldn’t mind being buried there myself. But Felicity isn’t dead and neither am I.
It’s one in the afternoon by the time I get home. The funeral had started at ten. With the swiftness of sparrows, I exit my car and enter the safety and familiarity of my Victorian home. I inhale the woody interior as I float over the threshold, through the entryway, and up the stairs.
“Felicity, I’m home!” I call and enter our room. She sits, beautiful, like a restored oil painting, by the window. She smiles at me, in her layered white dress, dotted with tiny periwinkle flowers. I take her face in my hands and kiss her forehead. Finally, I can shed these cloths of false mourning and simply be as I am, in love, with Felicity.
I put the black suit and tie away and slip into a grey flannel and jeans. Felicity and I go downstairs. I make lunch and coffee for us. We talk as if her family hadn’t just pulled the wool over the world’s eyes and told them she had died. What of? Hell if I knew. Hell if I understood the entire rigamarole at all. Why go to such lengths for someone who still walked among us? Why mourn for someone who is not gone? There was no inheritance in the will. Of course there wasn’t. Felicity was here, sitting across from me in our sunny kitchen, eating fettuccine alfredo with that smile on her face.
After lunch, we played Sequence and checkers, games she always could best me at. I won two Sequence games in the two hours we spent playing.
“I think my brother is coming by later,” I told her casually. “I wonder if he really believes everything that’s happened. I hope not. I hope he’s just playing along for appearances. Whatever that means.”
I cleaned up the board games. “Can you believe that they’ve taken it this far, Felicity?”
We go into the living room to watch TV, but even the news is mentioning her “death.” I change the channel and it’s another news station. I change it again, a commercial break. I mute it and check the TV guide. I put on one of Felicity’s favourite movies and get up to make popcorn.
By the time it’s over, Felicity asks me to help her take a bath. I gladly oblige. I adore her more than life itself. I run my hands over her bare skin, cold even in the warm, soapy water that surrounds her. I am so gentle with her. I pour water over her dark auburn hair, her waves turning to a straight and narrow forest. I adore her. She is so still in the tub and my hands are so steady against her. I cannot help but kiss her.
I dress her in a striped dress when she’s dry, and I comb through her long hair and hum for her. She is like a mannequin in the malls downtown, her face a forever smile, just for me. When I bring her downstairs, it’s time to prepare dinner. Just as I’m about to put a pot on the stove, the doorbell rings.
“Must be Doyle,” I smile at Felicity and go to answer it. It is.
“Well, I’m glad to see you’re smiling…” Doyle comments, brow furrowed as I let him in. “Making dinner?”
“Venison stew.”
“It smells good. And something hearty should keep you grounded. I’m sorry about Felicity. I can’t imagine what you’re going through.”
We remain in the entryway as we speak. “Frankly, I don’t know what you’re talking about, Doyle.”
His expression is increasingly concerned by those nine little words.
“Malcolm?”
“It’s an act, isn’t it? Surely you don’t think Felicity is actually dead.” I keep my expression bright. “But I can’t wrap my head around why her parents seem to think so.”
“Malcolm, Felicity is dead.”
“Then who’s sitting at my dinner table? Who’ve I spent all day with? Who did I bathe not an hour ago?” I think I have him cornered as he rushes into the dining room. I follow and hear a strangled gasp.
“Why?”
“Why what, Doyle? Why did Mister and Mrs. Fenrow lie to us, our family, and the rest of their peers?” I laughed lightly. “Beats me.”
He turns on me with a rage I’ve never seen, gripping my shoulders tightly. “When did you take her from the morgue?”
My eyes widen at the accusation. “What are you talking about??? You sound insane!”
He shoves me. “Insane?! Me, insane? Malcolm,” he forces me to look at her, “that is a corpse sitting at your dinner table, that is Felicity’s corpse! I’m calling the police.”
I see fear in Felicity’s face and all I can think to do, once Doyle has left the room to use the house phone, is to take her and run. Scooping her into my arms and ignoring the idea of another romantic dinner with her, I make a break for my car. I don’t stop, even as I hear Doyle yelling at me. I’m gone before he can catch me. Felicity is alive. I am sane.

Charming Cuisine: French Country Kitchen Decor Ideas
Full Interior Design Solutions in Bhubaneswar: If you're unsure of where to start when designing your kitchen in the French country style, start by picturing a simple, rustic French farmhouse kitchen. Imagine periwinkle linens and a huge oak table with sunlight streaming in. Using natural materials and light, airy hues, French country warmth and familiarity are achieved.
Step 1
Pick a paint color. Choose a shade of fresh summer grass, off-white, yellow, light blue, pale terra cotta, or any combination of those. Choosing checkered blue or yellow window coverings is a good idea if your walls are white. Wainscoting and chair rails should either be coated with a clear finish or stained in a light tint; they shouldn't be overly polished. Images of flowers or French cafes in bright, quirky frames should be shown. Simply frame them with black. The backs of your sink and stove should be covered with ceramic tile backsplashes with roosters and flowers.
Step 2
Choose a table with a thick slab of wood for the tabletop that has a rustic appearance. Give it a faint color wash. Chairs might be light wood, painted, or made of cast or wrought iron. Curves in the ironwork and pillows with floral or pattern Best Home Interior Designer in Bhubaneswar help soften this. Tables and chairs can be made of wood that hasn't been stained.
Step 3
Cabinets might be painted off-white, pale blue, yellow, or green or stained in a light color. Despite having rustic accents, a French country Modular Kitchen Design in Bhubaneswar must never be unduly dark or heavy. It is best to lightly stain or paint large hardwood tables and cabinets with light wood accents.
Step 4
Install floors made of brick, stone, or wood, and cover them with rugs made of cotton that are of generous size. To keep the décor French country rustic, if you want a fireplace, construct it out of stone. As a mantle, position a substantial beam over the fireplace. Put some light paint on it.
Step 5
Add off-white plaster in between the beams and install beamed ceilings. Utilize ceramic containers in various colors as decor. The table's centerpiece should be a big green plant in a pale blue pot.

I was inspired by this comic (that is, my fuzzy memory of this comic, so liberties were taken) while on a flight to Atlanta, I hope you don't mind, op.
---
“Wait!” the guide flung out a paw, halting Madeline in her tracks.
Before them stretched a wide plateau of checkered tiles, each square only large enough to comfortably place one foot inside. They shimmered under the hot pink sun, the white tiles gleaming opalescent rainbows and the black tiles swallowing the heat like asphalt.
Madeline shaded her eyes and peered into the distance. The checkerboard seemed to go on for miles, but it could be a trick of the eye, as so many other things in this place were. A trickle of sweat rolled down between her shoulder blades and soaked into the waistband of her flouncy blue dress, which she hadn’t remembered putting on. It didn’t make sense, and it wasn’t her style, but it was still better than her Popeye’s uniform, which she hated and was happy to ditch.
“This is a perilous crossing,” the guide said, once he was certain Madeline was listening. “It’s the quickest way to the Vaulting, but beware of the black tiles. If you step on them, you’ll surely die!”
Madeline slanted a glance at the creature as sweat continued to plaster her coily dark hair to her neck. He was a rabbitlike animal with wide, black eyes, two spiraling horns on top of his head, and a pair of dappled, feathery wings stretching out from the nape of his neck. Madeline had yet to see those wings in flight, but his four adorable little paws could run very, very quickly. He was perhaps just tall enough to reach her shoulder when he stood on his hind legs and raised his ears, which he was doing presently as he surveyed the black-and-white landscape ahead.
He had introduced himself as Avery, shortly after finding Madeline in the Inversion. Dizzy and disoriented, lost for who knows how many days in this strange mirror of Mobile. No, he couldn’t help her find her family - or anyone human, for that matter. Humans didn’t tend to last long in the Inversion. Too complex, Avery explained. Head too full of fears, heart too full of wants. But he could take her to the Vaulting - the place where the Inversion folded into reality - and maybe she could find a way back from there.
Since then, Avery had led her through a sticky purple swamp, with fringetrees that whispered and pixies that swarmed, tiny enough to inhale. He led her down a perfect copy of her street, every building candy colored and melting steadily in the heat, her “apartment” collapsing in upon itself. He led her along for days or hours, and Madeline wasn’t sure what they subsisted on other than the desire to be sustained. Her mind began to bend if she thought about it too hard.
“Don’t step on the black tiles,” she repeated, more statement than question.
“Under any circumstances,” Avery affirmed. “Our best bet is to go diagonally in one direction, then diagonally in the other direction so we’re traveling in more or less a straight line….”
As he went on about his strategy to cross the shimmering checkerboard, Madeline extended one of her polished periwinkle shoes and set it firmly on the black tile in front of her.
Avery’s eyes bugged out of his head. He threw a wild stare up at Madeline, shocked into silence mid sentence. Several uneventful seconds passed. Hot wind swept across the plateau.
“Oh, would you look at that,” Madeline remarked in a flat voice. “Nothing happened.”
Indeed, nothing had happened. Madeline hadn’t wanted to die, and so she had not. The pink sun continued to gently broil them. A pixie hovered near Madeline’s mouth and she shooed it away.
“Why did you lie to me, Avery?”
The guide did not respond, his large black eyes shimmering like the obsidian tiles as he cast them across the plateau.
There’s a lot going on in that little critter’s head right now.

The Descent
Welp, the unthinkable just happened—I slipped on a banana peel and fell into well. It's not as terrifying as it sounds down here though.
On the slow-motion descent, my body felt light as a feather and was thrust into the well casing which was covered in Willy Wonka's lickable wallpaper. Did I sample some? You better believe it—tart orange gave my tongue a tingle, sour lime had my cherry-red lips puckering and sweet corn filled me with intoxication. After what felt like 10 minutes, a most delicate landing left me on the padded ground.
As I took in my surroundings I noticed seven tunnels, each illuminated by its own hue of ROYGBIV. To my surprise an invisible New Orleans jazz band started to play (from the Y tunnel I think) and an obese man in a periwinkle tutu, sequined cyan leotard, opaque tights and pointe shoes floated down from the path I'd just traveled—left then right, hovering here and there to sample the delectable wallpaper. My eyes followed like those of a Kit-Cat clock.
The man wore the longest rainbow false eyelashes I'd ever seen, and they complemented his bulging emerald eyes and shimmering fuchsia shadow beneath pencil-thin black eyebrows. Twinkling with copious amounts of body glitter, he began to pass wind to the tune of "Rhythm is a Dancer." I kept on staring, mouth agape, until the tooting faded into more of a soon-to-be-deflated balloon sound.
Upon catching my eye, he was red-faced. "Heavens! ...Whoopsie... Excusez moi. ...hello, darling, I'm Roy G Biv. You didn't tell me you were coming! I'm so embarrassed. I didn't even have time to clean."
"Um, uh, do we know each other?" I replied.
"Well, yes and no. No in the sense that you haven't met me in real life but yes because you dreamt me up last night. You don't remember your dream?!"
"Nope, sure don't."
"Well that's neither here nor there. But since you decided to come we might as well celebrate. Follow me!"
He flitted through the Y tunnel, as "When the Saints Go Marching In" crescendoed, and I followed. With each uncertain step I took, chunks of Roy's costume glitter snowed upon my head so that by the time we reached the party room I too resembled someone who belonged onstage.
I shook my head as if I were a dog fresh out the bathtub and stepped inside when the room came into full view.
It was brightly lit in shades of yellow and felt like a fantasy land complete with a multicolored checkered floor, rotating disco ball and clowns on roller skates doing tricks on the adjacent wooden dance floor. I couldn't believe my eyes. To the left of the room was a DJ booth where a mime was spinning vinyl, and to the rear a long empty table that appeared to seat at least 50.
Roy fluttered over to the table, and with the snap of his fingers he summoned a cornucopia of decorations. There was a balloon-printed tablecloth, confetti strewn about, a party hat and golden goblet at each place setting, scattered noiseblowers, heaping bowls of ice cream, platters of donuts and in the middle a large three-tier cake with sparklers on top.
"How in the—" but before the question left my mouth, Roy had shouted, "Attention, attention!" which caused a rollerskating clown collision. With the scratch of a record, Mr. DJing mime made an exaggerated O face and then cradled his cheeks in his hands. All eyes were on Roy as he continued.
"Thank you my precious clownies," and with a nod toward the DJ booth, "Mixmaster Mime." "Tonight we're going to party because it just happens to be everyone's unbirthday! Come now, gather 'round the table so we can celebrate."
By the time everyone sat down the jazz band seemed to emerge from the hall into our room.
I stared at my reflection in the golden goblet which spoke to me in an ominous tone, "Should've worn your hiking shoes." Shifting my gaze from left to right I realized no one else could see what I was seeing. They were all too busy gorging themselves on desserts.
Without even thinking I bee-lined for the DJ booth where I'm standing right now tapping the microphone and telling this story. "Is this thing on?"

A photo taken out the window of a moving car in Aotearoa New Zealand. the sky is a washed out grey-blue and small power pylons can be seen- one next to the road and another in the distance, with power lines taut between them. there is shrubbery and grass on the roadside, darkened by the grey sky. a long, arcing shape made of starbursts is racing alongside the car the photo was taken from, shrubbery blueish and faintly visible through its glowing pale form. it is presented as if it is leaping or bounding, despite its shape being anything but animalistic. it is casting a faint shadow on the road, and the whole photo is slightly blurred as if moving at speed.
2. a photo taken from inside of a small cabin. in the foreground there is a blue chair and the corner of a round table with a tablecloth, and in the background there is a sink above some kitchen drawers, and a wide window, above with hang various pans. out of the window spills a saturated coral pink, starbursts escaping at the edges. the light consists of various colours, mostly coral pink but with a rich indigo blue glowing at the edges, as well as pale oranges and yellows. some of the light spills down into the sink, filling it up, dripping down the counter and forming star shaped droplets. the multicoloured light reflects radiantly on the edges of the hanging pans. the light is partially transparent, and the edge of the window frame can be seen faintly through the starbursts. 3. a photo taken on a beach in Aotearoa at dusk, right after sunset. the sky is a bruised colour, dark grey with bleary desaturated purple and orange undertones, becoming paler near the horizon. the horizon is halfway down the image, silhouetted with jet black broad, rocky islands. the ocean is visible, stretching across the photo, and the beach is empty but peppered with footprints. a sharp, strange figure stands facing towards the viewer, stepping forward. the intentions of the figure are unreadable. it glows a pale buttery yellow, warm orange around the edges of the starburst shapes it is made of, with a periwinkle hue in the centre of its form. stars float haphazardly around what could be considered its head, as well as its left arm, which has disintegrated into disconnected starbursts. the sand around its jagged feet, which end in needle-sharp points, is lit up from the light of its body, and it casts a faint shadow towards the ocean. the shore is faintly visible through its body. the atmosphere of the piece is gloomy but with an air of wonder and peculiarity.
4. a photo of the artist crouched down on rocky, algae covered ground, wearing an olive green jumper, dull green pants, checkered socks, and dark green sneakers. his face obscured by his hair, he is pointing a finger into a rock pool from which bursts a surge of bright and surreal energy, electric yellow-green and bright white in colour. the light is pushing past the artist, creating starburst shapes with hard edges, indicating that the light is tangible. the bright light is contrasted by the lighting of the rest of the photo, which is cast in a dim shadow.
