Danny loathed drive thru duty. He was under the impression that he’d get to be on production more once he got his license, but his lead pharmacy tech didn’t seem to think the same. And people in the drive thru were the actual worst. Except Ms. Gordon, she was fun to chat with while he looked up her profile. Most other people weren’t even worth remembering unless they made everyone in the pharmacy mad. Honestly, you know you’re a cruddy person when your name is well known in the pharmacy and the pharmacist doesn’t excitedly greet you.

Drive thru duty had been going on for two hours, without stop, with the influx of people getting off work. And Danny could feel his eye start to twitch. He desperately needed the rush to end.

Sighing, Danny watched as the next car pulled through. He’s almost positive the thing was a Bentley.

Danny purposely didn’t look at the vehicle’s inhabitants. They always start speaking before his phone can connect if he looks at them. Waiting until the phone beeped that there was a car in front of the sensor, he clicked the button to connect, but didn’t put the phone to his ear until the light stopped flashing, and he knew it had connected to the outdoor speaker.

Unfortunately, the guy in the drive thru didn’t get the memo that you’re supposed to wait until a person has the phone to their ear before you start rattling off information at them. “-medication for his broken leg. The other Apothecary Pharmacy said they sent it here and it couldn’t be transferred.”

Danny cut in before the man could give more of his life story. “Sorry the phone didn’t cut in when you started talking. Were you picking up?”

“Yes.” And Danny tried to cut in before the man had a chance to repeat everything again, but the man barreled on through. “I’m picking up for my son. The doctor called in medication for his broken leg. We thought it was at the Apothecary Pharmacy off of Chesnut, but they said it was sent here and they couldn’t transfer it to their store. So do you have it?”

Danny sighed internally. How was he supposed to know who this guy’s son is when the man hasn’t given him any information?! “Let me look him up. What’s the name?”

“Grayson.” Oh great, one of the people who just say half the name.

“Ok, and what’s the other part of the name?” Grayson could either be a first or last name.

“What?” Why do they never understand what he’s asking?

“What’s his last name?”

“That is his last name.” THANKS THATS SO HELPFUL.

Calmly, Danny asked. “Okay, then what’s his first name?”

“Dick.”

…. Danny must have heard that wrong. “I’m sorry I’m having a hard time hearing you, could you spell that for me?”

“Dick!” The man said louder. Which was not spelling. But Danny was at least 85% positive that he said Dick this time.

“Alright and what’s the birthday?”

“Dick?”

“The date of birth.”

“August 16th.”

Great, now he got to play find the misinformation. At this point he was better off just looking up the guy in the actual computer system than the cash register.

“What year?”

“What?” Danny was going to jump off a ledge.

“The date of birth, what was the year on the date of birth?”

“August 16th, 1997.”

Okay great. Now he could just- find no people with even close to similar names as what he was given.

“You said August 16th, 1997, correct?”

“Yes.”

“Okay well I’m not pulling up anything with that birthday. Grayson is G-R-A?”

“Y-S-O-N.” He only needed the first three letters, they were not playing finish each other’s sentences.

“And how do you spell the first name?” There was no way he was saying what he thought he heard.

“Dick.”

“Yes, how is that spelled?”

“What?” He knows the speakers are bad but they aren’t that bad.

“I need you to spell the first name.”

“August 16th, 1997.” Yes first name and birthday do sound similar but WHY WOULD HE ASK HIM TO SPELL THE BIRTHDAY?!?

“How do you spell Dick?”

“D-I-C-K.” Fucking finally.

“Okay thank you.”

And 0 results in the pharmacy computer. Which means this man is giving him all kinds of wrong information, or Danny can’t hear through the shitty speakers, but he’s pretty sure it’s the guy.

“Okay I’m not finding anything with that name or birthday, is-“

“The other pharmacy said that it was here.”

“Yes I understand that, is the name possibly under something else?”

“Richard?”

“That’s the first name?”

“Yes Dick is short for Richard.” Wow. Splendid. It’s almost like a facility dealing in medical records needs the legal name of the patient. Danny went ahead and replaced Dick with Richard in the cash register.

Of course. Danny went over to the computer and typed in Grayson,Richard. And who would have thunk! There’s a result! And it even has a 1997 birthday! Fancy that! But of course the rest of the birthday was incredibly wrong.

“Okay, I can pull up that name, but the birthday isn’t matching, you said August 16th?”

“Yes.”

“Is it possibly a different birthday?”

“Let me call him.”

Yeah, let’s just hold up the line while you call to ask your own child’s birthday. It’s not like we have these nifty things called smart phones that have inbuilt calendars perfect for keeping track of birthdays. Or better yet, not being a part of the 70% of dads who come into the pharmacy and have to call someone to give them their own kid’s birthdays. He’s not a father, but he knows in his bones that the bare minimum is being able to keep track of your children’s important information.

“Hello?” A guy’s voice came through the car.

“Dick, your birthday is August 16th?”

“Bruce, that’s Jason and Alfred’s birthdays. Mines March 20th, 1997. I’m literally your oldest kid. You’ve had the longest to remember my birthday!”

“I’m trying to pick up your script.”

“Alfred already picked up my meds. Alfred always picks up my meds. Why would you try to pick up my meds?!?”

And this guy was totally going to sit in front of a huge line of cars and bicker with his 27 year old.

“Richard doesn’t have any prescriptions available for pickup today. Is there anything else I can help you with?”

The man in the Bentley shook his head and drove forward.

Thank god.

“I’m going to the bathroom.” Danny announced as he sprinted away from the drive thru window and grabbed the bathroom keys. He could not handle another second in the drive thru, or he was going actually lose it.
