I’m am super thrilled that a movie about one of the most fascinating and successful medieval monarchs is in the making. Queen Margrethe I of Denmark (Norway and Sweden) was the first Queen Regnant in Denmark though she never wore the title officially - initially she got her infant son who was already King of Norway elected as King of Denmark but when he died as a teenager, she got herself elected as Denmark’s ruler on the condition that she’d adopt a male heir. She presided over the creation of the Kalmar Union that unified Denmark, Sweden and Norway into a Scandinavian empire. She also held off the immensely powerful Hanseatic League through some discreet piracy (a strategy that Elizabeth I later adopted against the Spanish in the 16th century).

The movie is a Danish production with Danish actors, helmed by director Charlotte Sieling. While it is a Danish production, it does look like they have international ambitions. Last year Sieling was in Cannes to drum up interest and the movie has an English title as well:
