[ Minato is sure one of these days he's going to truly collapse but he's determined to not make it today as he flits through the trees of the forest, purple leaves catching in his hair. He tries to skip Sakura Plunge when he does his rounds, learning that Kendo and Jade regularly stationed there meant he avoided it like the plague. He didn’t quite have the guts to confront the club yet, let alone Jade lest she tattles to Helsie. And then Helsie tattles to Joni and Lucien and then he’s in for a shitstorm he’s guilty of wanting to shelter from entirely. ]

[ But today he’s skimming his rounds specifically to drop there, watching from the cliff above as neither sibling is guarding the portal. Instead a woman he doesn’t recognize is and she seems to be kin in the slayer sort as she easily confronts the Oni that always return to that same spot. He uses the noise of the scuffle to take a few steps back and run, jumping from the cliff and narrowly succeeding in landing in one of the trees with a tremor. Leaves scatter from his impact but he hopes that she remained too distracted by hitting the final blow on the Oni to notice. ]

[ Once his calves stop burning from the landing he climbs silently further up the tree, balancing precariously while he bites the inside of his cheek. ]

[ He finally speaks up, hidden by shadows and thick foilage. ]

[The words slipped out before Charlotte could stop them, and she kicked herself for it. Of course he thought those were his only options. She had thought the same thing.

She put her back to the window and slid to the ground, leaning her head back against the solid, swirling surface.]

I'm sorry...

I understand more than you'd probably guess. The whole reason I'm in the shape I'm in is because I made the same mistake.

[She fixed Daigo's gaze with her burning green eyes.]

But it was a mistake. You and I both made it. In slightly different ways, but at its core it's the same mistake. And we're both paying the price.

Remember when I told you Kendo isn't the little kid you used to know? Turns out he's his own kind of genius, and you two could have done this all the right way, together, if you'd taken two seconds to stop and look at who he actually is and not who you thought he was.

Or if you'd sided with the Slayers. Do you honestly think we wouldn't have protected you? Do you have any concept of the number of Oni I killed on your doorstep that day without even getting tired? Of course you don't, because you never asked.

And the Oni's magic bears studying, yeah, but not to use. If you wanted protection, the Empress has ways to make people untouchable to the Oni. But you didn't know because you didn't ask.

[She was standing again, and was slowly approaching Daigo as the man backed away from her, but she didn't stop. She almost wasn't actually talking to him anymore, memories of her own mistakes playing in front of her eyes.]

You saved your sister, yes, but you tore your family apart, and now they've lost you and each other, possibly for good. Are you happy with this result? Was this what you wanted? Was all that cunning really worth the price when nothing actually got better in the end?!

[Daigo hit the wall behind him, and his flinch made Charlotte snap out of it, staggering back slightly. Her hands flew to cover her face as she turned away, feeling like she'd said way too much.]

[Charlotte tore through the boundary between the real world and the spirit realm, a bag over her shoulder. It had been a good bit longer than she intended since her last visit, but she hoped Daigo was still alright.

He was sitting by the window to the real world, as usual, when she found him, the pieces of the ruined portal scattered on both sides. Thankfully his kintsugi scars didn't seem to be changing or getting worse, so that much was a relief at least. She raised her hand as she approached, stepping around the stones in her path.]

Daigo! Good to see you're still alive in here. Apologies for the time I've been gone, I didn't mean to take so long. But I've got quite a bit of news from the other side for you, so hopefully that makes up for it.

Ah! Charlotte! It is great to see you! I'm gonna be completely honest, it seems the others have started to tolerate me somehow, they don't seem as threatening anymore, and they tend to try and make ne join in conversations. I usually not join because it's all hate discussion about heroes...
