All of my muscles are spasming. My hand are cramping, I forgot I had hamstring and quads, my calfs are threatening to Charlie horse and... AND DID YOU KNOW THERE ARE MUSCLES AROUND YOUR RIBS?! Like back muscles but in front?! THATS A THING?!?! WTF?! Even my neck hurts... or is that my hair? 😭😭😭 there are muscles on my arms that I didn't know I had.

Apparently I woke up the other night due to a Charlie horse and all my sister experienced was me whimpering in my sleep, bolting upright to bite into the meat of my hand for a minute or two, and then immediately passing out again.

Fun Tip [that may or may not work for everyone, I don't remember where I learned this]

If you feel your calf muscle tightening in that way that means its about twist around like a particularly malevolent terrier is trying to kill it, that's a charlie/charley horse.

What does it mean?!

The answer appears to be "humans are soft, squishy, biological creatures, not machines, our bodies do weird shit for a variety of reasons". But the top reasons are apparently:

Dehydration

Electrolyte depletion

Injury

But if you're lying down, what you can try is the following:

Roll to your back, as much as you can.

Bend your leg at the knee

Pull your knee to your chest as far as you can

Hold for a count of 10-20 seconds, trying to breathe as evenly as you can. Don't hold your breath.

If that's not an option for you lying down, for whatever reason, the other way is this:

Stand, then step out with the leg starting to cramp

Bend at the knee, with your back leg straight if you can. If you cannot, kneel with your back leg

Tilt forward over the cramping leg as much as you can

If you've noticed you're getting them a lot during summer, you're not alone. Make an effort to drink more Gatorade, Powerade, coconut water, etc, but that's not the only source of electrolytes. [Alkaline water is a scam, BTW] Drinking more water is great and all, but water alone isn't the best at helping you if you're really dehydrated. You need electrolytes:

Sodium (Na)

Chloride (Cl)

Potassium (K)

Calcium (Ca)

Magnesium (Mg)

Phosphorus (P)

Bicarbonate (HCO3)

Yes, you do need all of those. Please stop thinking of "chemicals" as a vague and frightening threat. Chemicals are the LEGOs of the world. Everything is made of chemicals in different combinations and configurations. Including you.
