[STORY TIME] 🤢🍹 DRUNK ELVIS (1968)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/18bceb5df227a858bc0bba97eb140440/f4951e84e6ffc07b-67/s540x810/f6a0ee938fa6a6d69f79e09eaea74ee161efa716.jpg)

Story told by Charlie Hodge.
Next to him are Joe Esposito and Larry Geller. All men, Memphis Mafia. You can hear the story on the video above, if you prefer, or you can scroll down and read it (Charlie is the way to go, press the play button). But before the story, just wanted to say: Charlie was so funny! The "huey" joke! LOL! I adore him. ♥ Rest in peace, sweet Charlie, also Joe. God bless your souls.
----------------------------------------------⚡-----------------------------------------------
[STORY TIME] 🍹
Well, as we know, Elvis was not a drinker. Hardly he'd get interested a few drinks, but that's the thing: when a person like that drinks and gets carried away, he goes all the way, not knowing his own safe limits; in reality it doesn't take that much alcohol to make 'em tipsy. As any person who didn't drink often, Elvis' tolerance for alcohol was very low - taking from the stories told over the years. Sometimes disasters happen when one not used to drink have too much drinking, other times just funny things take place. Charlie is talking about one of those moments for Elvis, a funny one.
According to Hodge, he and the guys (Memphis Mafia) were with Elvis in Palm Springs, on set while he was filming a movie during the 60's. Charlie recalls it as being 'Live A Little, Love a Little' — for which filming began on March 13th, with principal photography ending in May 1st, 1968, so that story happened in early 1968.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/67cb37ab3b23818ace07d1630c017aa7/f4951e84e6ffc07b-e9/s540x810/e157ab92f85911f023dfde5a1337edb1db66dcfc.jpg)
Elvis and Michele Carey on scene from 'Live A Little, Love A Little" (1968)
----------------------------------------------⚡-----------------------------------------------
Charlie says Elvis was filming one of the scenes he's in the sea, when he complained the water was too cold. He then asked his guys if they happen to have anything to drink, so could use the liquor to help keeping his body warm while he was filming that sea scene. They didn't have any, so they sent Charlie to buy some. Charlie bought a peach brandy and rum, so he came back with it and Elvis drank it... but it turns out he liked the peach liquor, a little too much.
Normally people who don't drink they go ease with sweet tasting liquor and they don't stop drinking, simply because don't feel getting drunk... until they are hammered. This happened to poor Elvis a few times.
When he finished the one peach brandy drink he had, on their way home after shooting day was over, Charlie mentions how Elvis was already slurred speech/swaying drunk but he said he liked the drink and wanted to go buy some more. The guys stopped by a liquor store. There, silly Elvis enters the store and absentminded goes walking around, calmly checking the options as if nothing was happening around, while "poor Joe", as Charlie says, was desperate to get him back in the car, in fear some mob took place if people found out Elvis was there.
Well, they got home safely after all, and El had all the drinks he wanted until everybody heads to their own bedrooms. Charlie says Elvis was wearing his blue nylon jammies and, he jokes about it, saying all the guys too were wearing blue nylon jammies that night, actually; in his words, "because we figured, if Elvis looks good in blue nylon jammies, we do too!" 😆

Scene from 'Live a Little, Love a Little' (1968)
----------------------------------------------⚡-----------------------------------------------
Shortly after, Joe Esposito hears a knock on his bedroom door. He opens the door and sees Elvis standing two-hands leaned against Joe's bedroom door frames, ill looking (clearly sick from the drinking).
El looked at Joe and said,
"Joe, I'm dying."
Esposito tried to calm him down, telling him he was alright and he should go back to his bedroom and just lay down and sleep, but Elvis ignored.
"Call daddy" (Vernon)", he said to Joe.
"Tell him to sell Graceland. He doesn't need that big old place... and sell all the cars, he don't need them too."
Joe continued trying to calm Elvis down, ignoring the nonsense the man was saying, but El (as any good wasted person who thinks he's in perfect clear estate of mind), insisted,
"I'm not kidding, I'm dying!"
Finally Joe got to send Elvis went back to his own bedroom, but soon EP was back repeating the same things. "I'm dying." According to Charlie, this went on for about three times. On the third time, as soon as Elvis said, "I'm dying" again, he threw up right in front of Joe. 🤢
----------------------------------------------⚡-----------------------------------------------
Can you picture drunk Elvis? (LOL) Those little anecdotes of Elvis Presley's life are just so fun to hear about! That bring him closer to us, making that god-like looking man feel like any friend of ours, or even ourselves. I love hearing those "hammered Elvis" stories, don't you?
Elvis in scene from "Wild In The Country" (1961)
----------------------------------------------⚡-----------------------------------------------
What kind of drunk person you think our sweet El was?
I think he would get extra affectionate, mellow and even needy, which makes me crave to be right there with him. ♥

“At night he grieved in his bunk. I would lie there in the darkness and listen as he quietly moaned from down in his heart. After a while, I would climb down and sit on the side of his bunk. I’d tell him jokes and stories until he began to feel a little better and could fall asleep. When I climbed back in my bunk I made it my goal to keep Elvis laughing all way across the ocean…”

Are some musicians really that bad at making the long play records? No, I don't think this might be the answer, I would claim some just didn't see the use of them. For instance, Elvis did release a lot of albums, but many of them are just a couple of hits and some filler put together. Still, we shouldn't see this as something bad, we must understand the context – Mr. Presley had a set of different priorities, he wasn't Sinatra with his song cycles, but I believe he would've been open to something like that, had he lived. Moreover, the ramshackle feeling of his platters does cause us to miss a multitude of gems, including the one on the link. Yes, that might be the biggest tragedy of those players who didn't put much effort into their LPs, some of their great tunes became ignored.

Elvis really had a few deathly-scares over the years, more than a few actually. That's the first time I'm reading about that one. Man, he was so responsible even in a critical situation his thought was about not hurting people (or hurting the less possible in case of an accident). Again, every time I read something new about him, the more I love the guy. But anyway, Holy Mother of God! So close... 😵💫🥴😵
Reading more of Charlie’s book on my break and y’all.. the story I just read. Elvis really be dodging death, lol.
They had finished filming Kissin’ Cousins up in the mountains and when they were getting ready to leave a huge storm was coming in that was soon to turn into snow. (There was already snow on the ground) so Elvis told everyone to hurry up before they get stuck up there. He drove this big mobile home down and the brakes STOPPED working. Elvis just told everyone to hold on as they were picking up speed and he’s like maneuvering this mobile home around the mountain.
One guy strapped himself down to a seat. Charlie was just speechless and Joe had opened one of the windows I guess to help Elvis see cause the storm was getting worse and Charlie thought Joe was talking to him. But Joe was like “I’m praying!” 😭
Meanwhile the brakes still weren’t working and Elvis said that if a car comes up from the other side he’s gonna have to crash into the mountain to avoid hitting and killing anyone especially if it’s a car with family. That the worst that could happen is it smashing into the mountain or smashing into the mountain and bouncing back that they slide of the side of the mountain. 😭😭
But man… they made it off the mountain and Elvis somehow got them stopped safely at this gas station and suddenly the brakes kicked in and he was able to stop. Charlie said everyone was silent and he felt sick and one guy was kissing the ground. LMFAO

Character ask: Willy Wonka (any version)
These answers apply to every adaptation – that I know, anyway – of the story of Charlie/Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, as well as the original book and its sequel Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. I haven't seen Wonka yet.
Favorite thing about them: He's a fun character all around. I love his creative genius, with all the fantastical candies and treats he creates and all the fantastical rooms in his factory. I love his blend of weirdness, cleverness, mischief, and passion for his work. His hints of moral grayness and insanity make him interesting, but his underlying warmth and kindness, especially to Charlie, prevent him from seeming like a villain. (At least I don't think so: more on that below.) He's like an eccentric wizard from a fantasy story, but with a more modern, candy-themed twist.
Least favorite thing about them:
Original book: The whole story of how the Oompa Loompas came to work for him has unfortunate implications. Even after Dahl revised the text and changed the Oompa Loompas from black African Pygmies to light-skinned dwarfs from Loompaland, the concept is still very iffy. A businessman "importing" a tribe of people from a foreign country to work in his factory, where he never lets them leave the premises, pays them in food instead of in money, and tests his experimental foods and drinks on them, which sometimes cause them bodily harm... it wouldn't fly in a book written today.
1971 film: To a sensitive child viewer (as I was), his angry outburst at Charlie and Grandpa Joe for stealing the Fizzy Lifting Drinks is scary and mean, even if it is just a test.
2005 film: I don't like the subplot about his controlling dentist father. A character like Wonka doesn't need daddy issues to explain him.
Three things I have in common with them:
*I love chocolate.
*I'm at least a little eccentric.
*I often wear purple.
Three things I don't have in common with them:
*I'm not a chocolatier, an inventor, or a factory-owner.
*I'm female.
*I've never met an Oompa Loompa.
Favorite line:
Original book:
(Explaining why he won't let Augustus be cooked into fudge): Because the taste would be terrible. Just imagine it! Augustus-flavored chocolate-coated Gloop! No one would buy it."
"Whipped cream isn't whipped cream at all unless it's been whipped with whips! Just as a poached egg isn't a poached egg unless it's been stolen from the woods in the dead of night!"
And the full text of his "There's no earthly way of knowing" poem and the funny, creepy poems he recites in the Space Hotel to scare the White House in the sequel.
1971 film:
"We have so much time and so little to see!... Wait a minute! Strike that. Reverse it." (and the later variation with "...so little to do")
"A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men."
"But Charlie, don't forget what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he always wanted... He lived happily ever after."
And of course his various quotes from Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, and other literature.
brOTP: The Oompa Loompas, and Charlie by the end.
OTP: None, he's happily single.
nOTP: Charlie or any of the other kids.
Random headcanon:
*In all versions, he's on the autism spectrum – it just manifests in different ways for each different Wonka.
*In the 1971 film, he's Jewish, just like Gene Wilder was in real life (and like Timothée Chalamet, for that matter). Maybe this is true in other versions too. I chiefly like to imagine this as a "take that" to Roald Dahl's antisemitism.
Unpopular opinion: The popular "Wonka is a villain" take is overdone. Yes, he has some moral ambiguity to him, but he's not evil. People often seem to forget that the fates of Augustus, Violet, Veruca, and Mike aren't "punishments" that he deals out. They're accidents that each child causes himself or herself by ignoring his warnings. Now, I don't mind it when adaptations imply that he deliberately sets up those accidents to occur if the kids disobey him, or at least show him as unconcerned with stopping or rescuing them. But I don't think either of those things are true to his portrayal in the book, per se.
Song I associate with them:
"Pure Imagination."
