23rd or 24th February 1807, triple execution of John Holloway, Owen Haggerty, and Elizabeth Godfrey. John Holloway and Owen Haggerty had been sentenced for the murder on November 6th, 1802 of the merchant John Cole Steele, while Elizabeth Godfrey had been sentanced for the murder of her her neighbor Richard Prince on December 25th 1806 by stabbing him just below the eye with a pocket knife. Despite frequent executions and their subsequent public spectacle, three executions on the same day was rare, and the crowd of around 40,000 gathered outside of the Newgate Gallows bore witness to this rare spectacle. Holloway upon mounting the scaffold called out to the crowd, ‘Innocent! Innocent, Gentlemen! No verdict! Innocent, by God!’.What happened next is mostly historical speculation, but one theory is that a section of the crowd eager to hear and see what would happen next climbed upon a cart, where the wheel broke sending people to the ground, wherein the crowd surged forward, causing a panic be seeing those being crushed at the front. Thirty-one people were killed and 40 to 50 were injured in the rush. After the executions a lawyer named James Harmer who inspired Charles Dickens in Great Expectations, wrote a pamphlet proclaimed that John Holloway, and Owen Haggerty had been innocent. Thirteen years later a John Ward was accused of the murder of John Cole Steele, but acquitted for lack of evidence. 🎄Christmas Time 🎄when it has come round- apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that- as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow- passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on their journeys. And therefore, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!” ❤️ ✨ Merry Christmas ☺️🎄☃️❄️ #christmasreads #christmas2020 #charlesdickensquote #charlesdickens #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookstagrammer #bookstagramindia #bookaddict #classic #classicreads #fridayvibes #festivevibes #festiveseason https://www.instagram.com/p/CJNTk2CgOrk/?igshid=1pch2nk0sd6s3

I want you to really look at my awesome shirt, my gift from a Desha. Not only is it a shirt, it is the ENTIRE BOOK. Not just any book. My favorite of all time. It’s printed in green, which doesn’t really show well, but it’s MAGNIFICENT. #achristmascarol #charlesdickens #charlesdickensquote #bestchristmasgift https://www.instagram.com/p/B6hkwkEltqn/?igshid=yp0ofk0nji1s

16th April 1850, death of French artist Marie Tussaud, founder of Madame Tussaud's wax museum. Beginning as anatomical studies, traveling waxworks shows began with the French surgeon Guillaume Desnoues (1650-1735), showing throughout Europe, his waxworks led to the popularity of wax anatomical models and their display throughout the 18th century. Influenced by Desnoues another practitioner was Dr. Philippe Curtius (1737-1794), who gave up practicing medicine to start displaying medical waxworks in France in 1770. His niece was Marie Tussaud who started her work in wax under the supervision of Curtius. By the French Revolution, Tussaud was casting the heads of those guillotined, and famous during the revolution including the head of Jean-Paul Marat. By October 1801, Tussauds waxworks were being exhibited alongside the phantasmagoria shows of Paul Philidor, also known as Paul de Philipsthal, who was influenced by the pioneer of phantasmagoria entertainment performance, Johann Georg Schröpfer. Within a few years Anatomical waxworks declined in popularity, but were revived again with the sensational trial of the ‘resurrection men’ Burke and Hare. Who themselves, well their effigies, would be displayed at Madame Tussaud’s museum. This period saw the rise of the most visited anatomy museum in London in the mid 19th century, Dr Joseph Kahn's Anatomical and Pathological Museum. Including his anatomical Venus. By Marie Tussauds death on the 16th April, waxwork shows had become one of the main forms of popular entertainment.
