Charlie blocked out the noise and focused on her face. They'd never let him be alone with her again, of that he was almost certain. The room scowled but she had been carved from stone, so still and muted. "I love you," He challenged, unwilling to back down from the accusation. Exile, they said. Death is what they meant. Beckett was on the other side of campus, without a weapon he couldn't be expected to make it halfway. They'd let him place his shoes on at gunpoint. Two days ago, Jax had pummeled him so viciously before they'd managed to haul him off, seeing was difficult. Shapes were hazy, especially in his periphery. He'd struggle to see walkers and they knew that. He'd struggle even harder to run with the ridiculous limp two hundred pounds pile driving his spine into concrete had left him with.

He'd given Blair's letters to Della, his hail mary. She'd told Beckett that the arts were coming, a girlish attempt to try and de-escalate her brother but surely more damning than the hearsay lobbied at him. He'd been thankful for them at the time, they'd been instrumental in his cooling off. Less sentimental than his sister might have hoped, he begged Beckett to see reason, that the last thing they needed was Shiloh's dogs strapping homemade C4 to their doorstep. His gratitude hadn't stopped him from pocketing them as his get-out-of-jail-free card before arriving though, nor did it pause the story he spun about not wanting to show anyone because he thought it was just a girl trying to save her brother - but of course now he knew better, she was the mole. Of course, she was. But he hadn't counted on Liam. Della trusted Liam. Liam trusted Maya. Maya trusted Jax. Jax trusted Blair. No one trusted Charlie. No one but Della. Looking at her now, he knew that was long gone.

It was all over her face, the last dying hope that he could produce just one more thing to exonerate himself and prove she wasn't an idiot.

"I love you," He insisted again, his eyes were locked in. "And you are going to regret this." Her head shook twice on reflex, averting her eyes from his as two large frames flanked him. His time was up. "I don't know who your mole is," His eyes glanced to Blair, peeking out from behind Jax's left. Her hands wrapped around his bicep like he wouldn't just drag her across the room if and when he decided on round two. "But your problem isn't dying with me, Della. You need to listen to me, someone here is lying."

"Yeah, you!" Jax barked from the back. Charlie didn't spare him a glance, instead focusing his eyes onto the side of her face and she stared anywhere but back at him.

"Beckett's not going to stop," He said softly, leaning in before he was yanked back by his shirt. He stumbled for a second but did not fall. "You know that. You know you need me here to help you. Don't do this."

"I don't need... anything... from you. Ever again." She managed, striding forward as the muzzle of the gun thumped him between the ribs from behind urging him forward.

"I forgive you," He offered bitterly, watching the back of her head as they moved. He thought it could move her, thought maybe it would be enough to give her pause but her feet didn't stop. "I do. They made this choice for you. I don't blame you."

X-Men '97: il revival sui mutanti Marvel che tutti aspettavamo

La recensione di X-Men '97, revival della storica serie animata sui Mutanti di casa Marvel che torna con un prodotto nostalgico ma intelligentemente aggiornato al presente. Tra animazione, regia e scrittura. Su Disney+.

Bastano gli iconici titoli di testa a confermare l'identità di X-Men '97, molto cara ai figli degli anni '80 e dei primi anni '90. La serie d'animazione classica era conosciuta in Italia come Insuperabili X-Men, in onda dal 1992 al 1997 per cinque ricchissime stagioni. Il suo peso storico è rintracciabile nell'aver aperto la strada allo sviluppo di molte altre serie televisive dedicate ai supereroi della Marvel, prima fra tutte quella di Spider-Man, ma più in generale nell'atto di sdoganare in senso mainstream i gli eroi sul piccolo schermo, sfruttando l'animazione come efficace strumento traspositivo per testare un medium differente.

X Men: un frame della serie animata

Nel settembre del 1997, poi, Insuperabili X-Men trova la sua naturale conclusione in un episodio dai tratti commoventi dedicato al lascito della missione di Charles Xavier ai suoi studenti, ormai cresciuti e diventati supereroi a tutti gli effetti. E proprio da lì riparte X-Men '97 di Marvel Animation: da quell'anno d'interruzione nel passaggio d'eredità morale, come se non fossero passati 27 anni, per raccontare un prodotto di ieri con gli occhi di oggi. Dimostrando quanto difficili e complesse siano le tematiche inclusive e identitarie narrata nella serie.

L'X-Factor di un prodotto straordinario

X-Men '97: una scena

X-Men '97 è prima di tutto rivolto alle generazioni che sono cresciute con la serie originale, ma non per questo si può dire disinteressata a un parterre di spettatori più ampio e più giovane. Il fatto è che lo show è in tutto e per tutto la sesta stagione del prodotto anni '90, di cui non funge soltanto da sequel ma recupera anche dinamiche, rivalità, scelte narrative e villain del suo glorioso passato. Lo sdoganamento dei supereroi grazie ai cinecomic ha resto molto più noti i fumetti Marvel tra i nuovi nerd, ed è principalmente su questa conoscenza acquisita e maggiormente diffusa a cui lo Studio ha deciso di aggrapparsi per lo sviluppo di una serie apparentemente nostalgica ma di fatto moderna, rinnovatrice di se stessa, ragionata principalmente su tematiche che dopo trent'anni sono oggi più di ieri fondamentali e dibattute in ambito civile e sociale. È il genere supereroistico che si rende elevato, sfruttando il mezzo dell'animazione per raccontare l'eterna battaglia dei Mutanti per l'accettazione. Stravolge una cifra contenutistica già emozionante e intimista in partenza e adesso più introspettiva, filosofica, con distinti tratti etici e intellettuali che trasudano dalla straordinaria penna di Beu DeMayo, showrunner ed head writer della serie che purtroppo non curerà più il progetto dopo la seconda e già annunciata stagione.

X Men: un frame della serie animata

Il gene mutante, il grande X-Factor di X-Men '97, risiede principalmente in un DNA concettuale che recupera il meglio del prodotto classico per attualizzarlo in ogni suo aspetto, divenendo per Disney+ quello che Castlevania di Warren Ellis rappresenta per Netflix. Ci sono monologhi che vanno riascoltati e interiorizzati, nello show, scambi di battute caustici e sarcastici, relazioni complicate che hanno ancora una loro decisa centralità. E poi molte intuizioni concettuali arrivano a trasformare completamente il senso di un episodio, toccando corde profonde e stuzzicando il pensiero critico dello spettatore. Un valore, questo, che è impossibile ignorare.

Il potere dell'animazione

X Men: un frame della serie animata

Al di là dell'attenzione per storia e dialoghi, comunque, X-Men '97 gode di un'animazione davvero splendida e di un gruppo di protagonisti ancora valido e affascinante. Il merito dell'estetica va tutto a Studio Mir, che è riuscito ad aggiornare il canone stilistico anni '90, mantenendone intatto fascino e carattere ma ripulendone linee e contorni, tratteggiando con decisione i dettagli delle scene e dei personaggi e sfruttando ovviamente tecnologie di sviluppo moderne per confezionare il prodotto. È dunque ricercata la patina televisiva dell'epoca, ma ad esempio la CGI è sfruttata in minima parte, dando ampio e giusto spazio al 2D e all'animazione tradizionale in tutto il suo splendore. Per non tradire la continuità dell'opera, si è poi deciso di mantenere tutti i costumi del tempo, da Ciclope a Wolverine, da Jubilee a Morph (tra l'altro scelta geniale riaverlo nel team, potendosi trasformare in tanti altri X-Men). Il colpo d'occhio maggiore, però, arriva dalle scene d'azione, dove risalta una maggiore fluidità dei movimenti e una regia animata più stilizzata e virtuosa rispetto a trent'anni fa. Altro elemento modernizzante della serie che dà il suo massimo nei team-up dei protagonisti (Wolverine e Gambit, Ciclope e Alfiere).

X-Men '97: una scena

Dei DIeci episodi che compongono questa prima stagione, non ce n'era uno che si potesse dire simile all'altro o che fosse meno interessante. Ognuno di essi guarda a un importante arco narrativo del passato, tra Sentinelle, Magneto o Sinistro, dando comunque modo allo spettatore più spaesato di comprendere gli allacci delle varie storie e di non sentirsi lasciato solo. Possiamo dirci sinceramente colpiti e soddisfatti del progetto X-Men '97, nella speranza che la prossima stagione possa regalarci gli stessi spunti di riflessione e lo stesso spettacolo di questa appena conclusa.

Conclusioni

In conclusione, dietro alla sua apparente aura nostalgica X-Men '97 nasconde una profonda anima intellettuale che si rende evidente soprattutto nella scrittura degli episodi e dei dialoghi, per come tratta alcune tematiche identitarie ed inclusive, per come sfrutta relazioni e rivalità, per le corde che sa toccare. Un prodotto meraviglioso forte di un parterre di protagonisti ben ragionato e di un'animazione rinnova il passato senza tradirlo, mantenendo intatto fascino e carattere della serie classica ma con un tocco aggiuntivo più virtuoso e moderno. Imperdibile.

Perché ci piace

La scrittura e la curatela di Beu DeMayo sono straordinarie.

Ci sono monologhi e riflessioni che lasciano il segno.

Il recupero costante di dinamiche e storie classiche che vengono però adattate al presente.

Lo stile animato è semplicemente meraviglioso.

Gli scontri, le rivalità, i team-up.

Cosa non va

Forse il pubblico di riferimento è principalmente quello che è cresciuto con la serie classica, ma non lasciatevi intimorire: in realtà è aperto a tutti.

Contrasto pubblica Alchimie, il libro che raccoglie il nuovo lavoro di Sarah Moon. La maggior parte delle immagini è stata realizzata al Museo di Storia Naturale di Parigi nell’estate del 2013. Qui Sarah Moon, ispirata dalle sue passeggiate tranquille, ha catturato le sue scoperte e rivelazioni in una serie di scatti in cui esprime la sua visione delle varie forme di vita: vegetale, minerale, animale. Attraverso una cinquantina di fotografie nel libro si dimostra la fragile temporalità della vita. Le creature che cattura Sarah Moon sono in gabbia, confinate entro le vetrate degli edifici storici del museo, intrappolate e senza vita. Quando non ci sono evidenti barriere fisiche, Sarah Moon le crea attraverso la sua lente. A prima vista, le fotografie sembrano essere dei raggi X, per la loro natura granulare e oscura. La sua collezione esplora figure solitarie, come nel caso dell’unica cicogna con la schiena rivolta allo spettatore. L’uso del colore è magistrale: sfumature profonde di smeraldo e turchese, con forti tinte di cremisi. Le fotografie evidenziano un interessante assortimento di pappagalli e fiori, iniettando una dose di vivacità  nella collezione.

Fotografa di moda dal 1970, Sarah Moon sviluppa un lavoro più intimo e personale a partire dal 1985. Le sue fotografie sono apparse su numerose riviste e sono state il soggetto di diversi libri: Souvenirs improbables, Le Petit Chaperon rouge, Vrais Semblants, Coïncidences (l’edizione italiana è stata pubblicata da Contrasto), Circuss, L’Effraie, Le Fil rouge, La Sirène d’Auderville, Le Chaperon Noir. Nel 2008 il libro 1.2.3.4.5 (pubblicato in Italia da Contraso) riceve il Prix Nadar. Da diversi anni Sarah Moon costruisce e arricchisce un universo personale incentrato in particolar modo su tre temi: l’evanescenza della bellezza, l’incerto e lo scorrere del tempo. Nel 2003 la Maison européenne de la photographie presenta una grande esposizione dei suoi ultimi lavori che fa in seguito tappa a Kyoto, Mosca, Shanghai e Pechino. Nel 2008 1.2.3.4.5 è stato presentato a Londra al Royal College of Art e alla Michael Hoppen Gallery, a Parigi a Camera Obscura a Parigi e a New York alla Howard Greenberg Gallery. Nel 2013, invitata dal Museo Nazionale di Storia Naturale di Parigi, ha presentato, con l’esibizione Alchimies, il suo lavoro sul mondo animale, vegetale e minerale. Sarah Moon ha anche realizzato numerosi film, fra cui un lungometraggio, Mississipi One, e alcuni film dedicati alla fotografia e ai fotografi, in particolare a Henri Cartier-Bresson e Lillian Bassman. Ha lavorato a due cortometraggi ispirati ai racconti di Hans Christian Andersen e a Charles Perrault: Circuss, L’Effraie, Le Fil rouge, La Sirène d’Auderville e Le Chaperon Noir. Nel 2012 ha scritto e realizzato un mediometraggio di fantasia, 5h-5.

Charlie leaned over the desk, his hands splayed wide to support his weight as he grinned down at her. The energy he radiated was infectious, his teasing laced with an exaggerated charm as he tried to coax a further smile from her. "Sure does," he declared, his voice brimming with unearned confidence. When she didn’t immediately bite, his grin widened, undeterred. "What, you don’t believe me? You think I got my bachelor's in health science and don’t know what I’m talking about? How hurtful." He pressed a hand to his chest in mock offense, leaning in just slightly closer. "Truly, I’m wounded."

Her pessimism prevailed, the topic of starvation ironically refused to be tabled. Charlie sighed a little too sincerely, the dimple in his cheek working to soften the blow of what came next. "I’m telling you," he said, his tone light but measured, as if trying to will conviction into his words. "I was there for months. These guys will cannibalize themselves in no time—a month, tops. Maybe even literally, if we’re lucky."

He regretted the joke as soon as he said it, a little too jovial and he knew it. Not everyone found a comedy of errors in watching Beckett's struggles– Least of all her. Charlie forced himself to recover, his easy charm faltering for only a moment before he nodded in quiet acknowledgment. "Bad joke," he acknowledged with a nod, his voice softer now, almost sincere. He reached for her book, flipping it open to her carefully charted calculations. His fingers tapped twice on the graph, his movements a deliberate distraction from his faux pas.

"Look," he began, easing into a tone of confident reassurance. "If we tighten down the rations gradually like this," he said, tracing the slope with a measured finger, "we can stretch what we have for at least three months. They won’t last that long."

The lie slipped out easily, almost too easily. How could it not? He’d rehearsed this exact line enough times to believe it himself. His expression remained unshaken, his brows knit with casual focus, as though the calculations she’d scribbled matched the story he was selling. His hand hovered above the page, steady as he tapped the graph again for emphasis, a subtle cue to redirect her attention.

The truth was far more complicated, far more damning. Charlie had ensured Beckett’s faction would have at least six months of rations—maybe longer, if they followed his plan to the letter. Enough to outlast the desperation that would eat away at the others like a slow, insidious rot. Beckett wouldn’t thrive, no, but they’d survive. And survival was all they needed. Strong enough to strike when the rest were too weak to resist.

Charlie’s stomach churned, but he kept his features composed, his voice calm. Misinformation had been his weapon of choice since this all began. Planting seeds of doubt, feeding the wrong people the wrong truths—it was all part of the game. And Beckett’s survival wasn’t an accident. It was the lever Charlie needed, the balance he maintained to ensure Culinary folded at the right time, that the others were too hungry to care who had done what when all was said and done.

He glanced up at her briefly, catching the faint crease of concentration on her brow as she processed his words. Did she believe him? Did she trust him? He couldn’t be sure, but the tension in his chest tightened nonetheless. Charlie straightened, his hand falling away from the book as he leaned back slightly. He told himself the lie was necessary. A means to an end. But the weight of it lingered, heavy and unshakable, as he forced a familiar smile to his lips.

"You worry too much," he said, his voice smooth and easy, as if he had no knowledge of the world placed on her shoulders. "These are just kids playing games they don’t understand. Trust the process."

He paused, leaning in slightly, the glint in his eye betraying a mischievous edge. His smile softened, but his tone didn’t lose its playful lilt. "And maybe," he added, his voice dipping lower, inviting her into the moment, "take a distraction every now and then. It’s good for the soul."

"We need more." She mumbled dryly, putting the pencil on the table. It was no longer a form of assistance in her counting, instead it's tapping seemed to take up a rapid rhythmic expression of her nerves. Della was well enough educated to know that she hadn't miscounted or missed enough rations to justify the way she was obsessively going over the data again and again. She had just hoped that maybe she was wrong somewhere, that she hadn't doomed her faction by not seeing this whole fiasco with jocks coming. If she had just made some form of gardening on top of their building, it wouldn't have been much, but it'd have helped.

Della raised her eyes as the man who had patiently been waiting across from her throughout this whole inventory process spoke. It wasn't exactly an encouraging question, but it was one she had asked herself and as much as she disliked it he was right. She could not change their circumstance with lists and numbers. " I know, I just wish we had enough to make it pleasant." He pulled the book away from her and she gave it with little fight, if she'd allowed herself to keep it she'd just start it all again.

" Worrying burns through more calories?" Della laughed at the absurdity of the fun 'fact' in a form of a question. It sounded like something you'd read off a magazine at the checkout aisle. " Well, I hope you've always preferred thin women because between starvation and this new development on worrying I'm afraid I'll never be able to keep any weight on."
