“Chuck are you sure? Honestly, you don’t have to!” This was generally the way that conversations went between the two of you before any kind of event.

Chuck, having been your boyfriend for the past sox months, always wanted to spoil you. He’d constantly buy you gifts, surprise you, do everything he could do. None of it at your request. Just because he wanted to. And it was adorable. You saw the way his face lit up when you told him you loved whatever he’d done but it didn’t stop you from feeling constantly guilty at the thought. You didn’t ever want him to feel like he had to do any of that, and you definitely didn’t want him thinking that it was why he was with you.

“You say this every time, love,” He shakes his head, “But it doesn’t change anything.”

You brush your hands over the dress that he’d bought, one that felt like it was made just for you - perfectly in time for the event he was hosting tonight.

“It just feels like too much, you shouldn’t keep-“

“(Y/n),” He stops you, coming up behind you so you could see his reflection in the mirror as he wraps his arms around and settles his chin on your shoulder, “It’s not too much. I want to, honestly.”

“That’s not how other people see it.”

It was true. Being the girl from Brooklyn, you’d never grown up having what the rest of them did. You grew up with Dan, the two of you living in the same apartment block. You worked as soon as you could get a job, and did everything you could to help your parents and piece together the life that they wanted you to have. When you ended up in a school with the richest kids from the upper east side, you’d never felt more out of your depth. But the king of them all had been a pleasant surprise. He was caring beyond his harsh exterior and honest beyond his manipulative business ways. He saw someone in you that status and wealth made no difference to. And he found it admirable, every piece of you feeling like something he wanted to be in himself. He found in you an ambition to be better, and that’s how you’d won his heart above what anyone else could’ve done. Without even trying, Chuck Bass had grown weak for you.

“I don’t care what anybody else thinks,” He mumbles, pressing a soft kiss just under your ear, “You look beautiful, darling.”

And with words like that coming from him, you find it impossible to dispute.

“Thank you, I hope you have a good evening,” Chuck bids farewell to another few businesspeople who’d been interested in speaking to the founder.

You wait patiently a step away until he turns to find you again, a smile lighting up his seriousness.

“You always sound so professional,” You smirk as he settles an arm around your waist.

“I can only do it for so long,” He mumbles, pressing a kiss to your exposed shoulder.

“You’ve got a few people wanting to meet you I think,” You glance over to some corporate bosses glancing in your direction.

Chuck lets out a little groan, “Will you be okay?”

“Yeah, honestly,” You encourage him, “I’ll get another drink.”

He hands over his empty glass, “I think I’ll need one too.”

You laugh gently and make your way towards the bar, smiling politely at people as you walked past - anything to keep up Chuck’s reputation.

It’s as you’re about to order the drinks when you’re stopped.

“(Y/n),” It’s Blair’s voice, too sweet for the words that were likely to follow, “Manage to leave Chuck alone for a moment, hm?”

You take in a deep breath and turn to face her, “It’s nice to see you too, Blair.”

She lets out a scoff, “What’s this? Another one of Chuck’s gifts?”

You glance down at the dress hugging your figure, unable to find any comment suitable enough to respond to her with.

“When’s he going to realise you’re only in it for his money?” She shakes her head, looking so much more effortless in a setting like this.

You swallow the lump in your throat and pull yourself together, “You know that’s not true.”

“Then allow me to revise,” She steps forward and eyes you up and down closely, “When are you going to realise that he’s only doing all of this because he can’t stand the thought of dating a Brooklyn girl? Honey, he’s trying to make you one of us.”

It hits like the heaviest weight on your chest, making you feel sick with instant response. Was that really what was happening? How could you be sure of anything else?

Blair smiles like she knows the effect of her words, proud of it actually.

You try your best to keep composure, “Excuse me.”

It’s as you’re hurrying off that you see Chuck walking with a direct line toward where he thought you might be.

“Hey, hey,” He stops you when he sees your panicked state, “What’s going on?”

“I’m sorry, I can’t do this,” You shake your head quickly, pulling away from him as you try to get out of the hall with as little attention as possible.

Chuck just has to look to the bar to see the cause of it all, striding over to Blair with an icy glare in those eyes.

“What did you say to her?” He questions bitterly, the anger coursing through his veins agonisingly.

“Just what we were all thinking, Charles.”

He looks her up and down once like he’s trying to find any part of her that didn’t have an evil intention, brows furrowing as all he can think of is going to find you. His hands swipe a bottle of champagne and two glasses as he rushes off in the direction of your path to find you before your thoughts did.

It’s far too crisp to be outside when he walks out onto the rooftop. There’s a harsh wind that he knows you’d hate but it’s the only possible place he can think of finding you.

“You forgot our drinks,” He calls, closing the door behind him as he walks across the empty roof.

He sees as you turn your head slightly to the sound of his voice, but knows you don’t have any words to respond to him. You’d been crying.

Chuck walks over and sets down the bottle, standing beside you and following your line of sight out into the city.

“I’m not like them, Chuck,” You say quietly, sniffing to try to keep in your emotion as much as possible.

“I know,” He states simply, “I knew that from the day I first asked you out for a date.”

“Do you wish that I was?” You question far too abruptly, “Is that what all of this is? Are you trying to make me more like those other girls?”

“What?” He half-laughs, “(Y/n), if I wanted one of those other girls, I’d have them.”

You know it’s not the best way of him wording it but the good intention is there.

“You know what I mean,” He sighs, “I’m with you because you’re not one of them, because you showed me how much I was missing by even thinking of being with another carbon copy from the upper east side.”

You let him speak now, needing to hear all of those words to set off some sort of reassurance for you.

“I met you and you weren’t the type of person that I’d spent my whole life around. You were different, and you weren’t fuelled by caviar or a desire to prove yourself above the rest. You trusted in the fact that you didn’t need any of that to be a good person. And it was fascinating to me,” He says, so certain of every word, “Because I realised that I’d been one of those people up until when I met you. I’d been constantly thinking of proving myself, of being better than everyone and never thinking of who I hurt in the process.”

“Don’t say that Chuck.”

“No, (Y/n), you made me a better person and you still do. You’re everything I love and everything I want to be. And where you were born, your status, how many houses your parents own - it makes no difference to knowing that your heart is pure gold,” He grabs your hands and turns you to him, “So, if you don’t want the gifts or the big gestures, then they’re all gone. I just need you to know that I love you and those other girls would never, ever hold anything compared to you.”

“God you’re good with words,” You laugh a little.

He chuckles and moves to wrap his arms tightly around you, burying his head into your neck as he presses a soft kiss to the skin there.

“Now, how does that drink sound?”

You pull away from him and cup his face in your hands, “God, I love you Chuck Bass.”

“I wouldn’t want you dead” ft Chuck Bass

You and Blair were childhood friends and there wasn’t a thing you wouldn’t do for her. There were some things that you would protest very loudly, though. One of those things was play the stupid middle school game ‘Seven Minutes in Heaven’ at her stupid Valentine’s Day Party. Your protests fell on deaf ears and Blair somehow convinced you to spin first.

“I really don’t want to do this…” You glare at Blair and she gives you a warm smile.

“Come on, it’ll be fun! I promise,” she giggles and walks you over to the circle that the rest of the party-goers had formed.

“Why is everyone so eager to play this stupid game? We’re not in middle school, hell we’re not even in high school anymore!” You scrunch up your face at all your potential picks.

“Because not everyone is a prude like  you,” you hear the venomous voice behind you and you grit your teeth, fists clenched at your sides as you stop walking.

“Now is not the time, Bass,” Blair glares at Chuck as he walks in front of you, looking you up and down.

“You look hot. I’m shocked,” he smirks, winking at you as you walk away. He was always mean to you in a playful sort of way, but after finding out that you came to B’s Valentine’s Bash with Carter, he’s been insufferable.

“God I fucking hate that prick,” you look over at Blair who’s giving you an apologetic smile.

“I never understood why you hate him so much,” she shrugs, sitting next to you in the circle.

“We’re polar fucking opposites, Blair. He’s literally the devil,” you mutter, glaring at Chuck as he sits a few people away from you.

“You’re not a complete angel, either love,” Blair whispers and rubs your thigh as she gathers everyone’s attention. “Alright everyone, let’s get this game started! My beautiful friend Y/N is gonna spin first!”

She hands you the bottle and you lean forward, spinning the bottle with just a hint of anger in mind. The bottle spins and spins and spins… and lands on Chuck.

“Fuck,” you clench your jaw as Chuck gives you a smug look, scoffing as though he thinks you wouldn’t do it. You stand and flip your hair over your shoulder. “Get off your ass, Charles.”

You walk over to the Waldorf’s massive closet as Chuck practically trips over his own two feet to make his way after you. He locks the closet and leans against the door.

“I gotta say, I didn’t think you’d do it.” Once again, his eyes rake up and down your body as you roll your eyes at him.

“Chuck shut up. We just have to spend seven minutes in here. You don’t have to talk to me,” you glare at him and turn away, walking to the end of the closet.

“Make me,” he shrugs, leaning against and empty coat rack, eyes not leaving your face. You roll your eyes and shake your head.

“What the hell has gotten into you, Charles?” You put one foot in front of the other, walking to him as though stalking your prey. “Why are you being a grade A prick?”

“I’m not Carter, Y/N. I won’t play the nice guy to get into your pants and then go back to being a prick. I am always a prick. It’s who I am,” he shrugs, a smug look on his face as you walk closer.

“Is that what this is about? Carter?” You stop a foot away from him, giving him an incredulous look.

“This is about the fact that you would bring him here as though you forgot what the fuck he’s done to us all,” he curses under his breath and pulls out a cigarette.

He lights it, taking a hit and breathing out a cloud of grey smoke. It looked as though the cigarette was the only thing that would keep him sane, as though he couldn’t fathom what was happening around him. Every breath he took and let out was faced away from you, as though embarrassed. It physically pained him to put out the square as he forced himself to look back up at you.

“You brought him here despite the fact that he was willing to beat Nathaniel half to death because the kid couldn’t pay off his gambling debt. Your precious Carter was willing to stab me in the gut to keep me from testifying against him in court. But of course, that would probably be a point in his favor, huh? Because you fucking despise me. You despise me enough to want me--”

Your hand colliding with the side of his face brought his words to an abrupt halt. A light gasp left your lips as I realized what you’d just done, Chuck’s face slowly lifting back up to level with mine. A heartbeat passed in silence before Chuck cupped your face, crashing his lips against yours in a desperate frenzy. Before you know what’s going on, your fingers are tangled in his hair and his hands are cupping your ass. Your mouths are molding into each other after every breath, proving that there was a very VERY thin line between lust and hate.

You both pull back for a breath of air, a calming silence falling between you two as you study each other’s faces.

“I wouldn’t want you dead,” you whisper, placing gentle yet demanding kisses all along his jaw.

“Good,” he whispers breathlessly, lifting you up and wrapping your legs around his waist as he pushes you up against the door, your back thudding against it as you both chuckle.

Your lips move to his neck and he lets out a light moan, his grip tightening around your waist as you feel him grow against your panty-covered slit. One of his hands moves up and grabs your hair in a fist, pulling your head back and exposing the skin of your neck. You let out a loud gasp as he nips your jaw then your neck then the base of your throat. His lips move lower and before you can react, the door is opened causing you to fall flat on your back and Chuck to stay right on top of you. His hands formed a sort of cage around your shoulders to keep your head from getting hurt while his head is buried in your chest.

“Well well well,” Blair’s standing by your right shoulder with a key in her hand and a proud smirk on her precious face as she watches you two. “Bass you can move your head from down there.”

“Now why would I do that?” His voice comes out muffled as you chuckle, shaking your head.

Everyone was watching you, and you knew you had to move, but you would be okay with staying here for another minute.

As soon as he’d arrived and climbed off Taima though he was pulled down into a sudden kiss. “Missed you bear.” Jacob had mumbled before pulling him back into a kiss that left them both flustered and hot faced.

SOME MORE GRATUITOUS POST-CAPTURE DRABBLES FEAT. BLISS, AND EV GETS TO ACTUALLY FLEX A BIT OF HIS KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL

There's nothing to distinguish the truck they arrive in from any of the other trucks in Fall's End. The sleepy 3 A.M. silence is broken not by a cacophony of gunfire but by the slow stop of tires on gravel, and the sound of three doors opening— three people slipping out from the car under the cover of darkness, carrying a fourth in tow, into the back door of the chapel.

Dedsec conducts this missions quietly. Six hours ago James had gone missing from a resistance bunker right under their noses, and it had taken them three hours to track him down again. Wrench and Grace had slipped into the ranch to recover him, while Amr kept the truck running and a gun at the ready.

There was panic when the lights had gone out, but the outpost couldn't hope for rescue with the comms cut. There was no thrumming bass this time, no giddy resistance members in painted gas masks. Just darkness and silence. Quick and efficient. This was an extraction, not a show.

Ev is expecting a struggle. All their previous interactions with the Bliss had left its victims skittish, paranoid, and ready to fight. He remembers needing both him and Wrench to keep Amr down while he fought spectres, still feels a bit sore where Amr had elbowed him square in the jaw. He joked to a sober, apologetic Amr that they were even now, from when they first met. Eye for an eye. Bruise for a bruise. Amr didn’t find it as funny as he did.

But a blissed-up James doesn't fight them. There's no doubt about his condition: one glance at James tells him that this is all wrong. His gait wobbles, and he's guided by the rushed but gentle (all things considered) hand of Amr into the church.

"Here, bring him here," he says, leading them to a pew that has been dressed with blankets, a more comfortable seat than the hard pine beneath.

Amr guides him down and murmurs a low assurance, but Ev can see that he's wound tighter than the coils of an electromagnet: tense shoulders, clenched jaw, a tension in his tone he's trying to smother to comfort someone who's not entirely there to hear it. James' hands reach to dig into Amr's arms as he pulls away, whispering frantically, "Wait, wait, wait—"

"James," Ev puts a hand on his shoulder, voice firm. It draws James' gaze, but when he looks at Ev he can tell James isn't looking, not really. His eyes might travel in the approximate direction of Everett Harter but his mind is blow a thousand miles away in space and time. It doesn't even click that this is James, who is usually so focused, so intentional, and he thinks that they've accidentally rescued some hapless addict who merely resembles the man Ev has come to respect so deeply. There must be some mistake. "James, you're here. You're in Fall's End. You're safe. Amr is here. Otsi's here. We're all here."

James reluctantly unwinds his knuckle-white fingers from Amr’s arm and obeys, mouth moving in a voiceless plea Ev can't even hope to parse into words. But he can parse his pale skin, his cold sweat, the tremor that rattles every part of him perfectly well. Ev raises a hand in a broad, sweeping motion, slowly so the fractured mess that is James' mind can understand he's going to touch him, and carefully pulls at his forearm.

"I need you to give me your arm, okay?" Ev speaks gently. "I have something that'll help. The thing Charles worked on, remember? I need your arm so I can give it to you."

James stares at him for a long moment, but eventually relinquishes his arm, unknotting it slowly with far too much effort and concentration. Only once James has it extended does Ev carefully wrap an elastic around it and pick up the needle he had set aside earlier.

"What, what's that?" Amr asks sharply, stopping dead in his aimless, anxious pacing. "What are you giving him?" "Physostigmine salicylate."

"Isn't that a lot?" "I measured the dose already. It's right." "Is it going to hurt him?" Ev's eyes snap shut. "Amr, you need to shut up right now. Go— talk to Jerome or something. Get up a watchtower."

Amr lets out a muted noise of shock, but doesn't respond. Ev can hear his footfall fade and his voice pick up with Grace and Jerome in the next room.

Finally, his gaze goes back to James. "James, this is going to sting a bit. But you have to trust me, okay? It's going to help." James' tongue flicks out over cracked and chewed lips, a small hiccup in the soft murmur. Without Amr's pacing, in the silence of the church, he begins to discern words.

"Phil, Phil," he breathes. "I'm scared."

The gears in Ev's head grind to a halt. And like a car being forced into reverse, immediately begin to work the other way— where had he heard that name before? Had he heard that name before? The questions mount behind his eyes until he forces them out, squeezing his eyes shut.

Focus.

"I know," he says. "But I need you to trust me. Close your eyes, okay?" His mouth shuts. After a moment, his eyes do too. Ev speaks through the act of sticking the needle in, shushes him softly as he flinches at the pain.

"This is physostigmine salicylate. It's derived from a tree nut. It's actually really cool, and I'll tell you all about it when you're better. It's a cholinesterase inhibitor, which is usually very bad, but right now your acetylcholine transmitters are all fucked up and this is going to help them. It's not going to make it better right away, but it'll make it happen faster, and you won't have as many side effects." James nods along numbly, and Ev isn't sure if he's actually getting through to him, or if he just likes the noise. He tries not to think of the word pliant as he carefully withdraws the needle and presses his thumb over the hole.

"Done," he smiles. "Now we just wait it out."

Two days pass before Ev is alone with James again. Mary May's been kind enough to provide them with a home-cooked meal, which Ev brings to the bunker where James has been in a type of self-imposed solitary confinement. The Bliss wore off a day and a half ago, but James is still skittish, and Dedsec still overprotective— still scared of losing someone they just got back. And while they struggle to chase away the demons of what ifs and could bes, Ev's mind is stuck on a name:

Phil.

Amr and Grace had been entirely unhelpful. Wrench had threatened, but in the way Wrench always threatens, in that Ev is never really sure if he's kidding— but he knows Wrench well enough by now to know that it's never really kidding. And he had wondered if this isn't some weird late hazing, because Lola doesn't know about him either; but he's a hacker, and they had all taught him to push things and question what he doesn't know. And right now, Phil is what he doesn't know.

So he knocks twice and tries to will his heart to a more reasonable pace, because this is James— though James is a scary motherfucker lately— and James has always answered the questions Ev asks him. Sometimes begrudgingly, but he always answers.

James is pouring over a map of the Henbane when he enters, strategic locations marked with colourful pins. The south-western quarter is obscured by a heavy plate of wholesome farm food.

"From Mary May," he says. "How are you feeling?"

"Better," James' tone is clipped, and Ev can honestly say it's a welcome relief compared to the shell-shocked leader from two nights prior. "Dizzy, sometimes. It comes and goes." "That's the withdrawal. Hopefully shouldn't last more than a week."

He watches as James prods a potato around the plate and puts the fork back down.

"I pinpointed the critical research camps," he says. "Based on Nick's observations and some of the information coming out of the region. A few flyovers with the drones should give us a good idea of how they're laid out—"

"Who's Phil?"

It's like all the heat has been sucked out of the room. James' mouth snaps shut, and what little light sits on his face vanishes the moment the name is out of Ev's mouth. A prickling, dreadful ice climbs its way up his stomach, and all he can think about is what Wrench said. No one will ever find the body.

"Where did you hear that name?"

"You said it. Twice, actually. Back in the chapel. When you were... You know."

Ev hates that frigid stare, how permanent it's been on James' face since they came here. He's always been good at reading people, even people like James. But the gaze James levels at him now is like staring at concrete. Unnatural. Ev isn't about to be deterred by a glare, though, even if he's pretty sure a more severe one might actually kill him.

"You were close to him," he says. "You must have been. You were scared. And... I thought maybe you would have asked for Amr, or Wrench. But their names didn't come out of your mouth. His did."

James is quiet for a long moment, which itself isn't unusual— there's usually a pause while James formulates his next thought. No ums or ahs have fallen from James' mouth for as long as Ev has known him.

And to his surprise, James doesn't kill him.

"He was my fiance," he says. "Before this. All this, really. Before Dedsec."

Was.

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be. It was a long time ago. I keep telling myself it should stop hurting, that six years is enough time to grieve, but..."  "Hey," Ev's voice is soft. "I still miss my dad." James' lips cock half a smile, but it's all muscle memory. There's no joy to it. "Thanks for dinner."

And that's all he's going to get out of that, apparently.

Drop the beat

Reefside Billie drabble. @redtyrannoranger @fivetimesaranger and anyone who might get a kick out of this :)

Billie was, by all definition, shy and awkward, though since hanging around with Conner, Ethan, and Kira (mostly Conner) she’d grown in confidence without even realizing it. Today she was sandwiched in between Ethan (who was more interested in his laptop) and Conner (who was ogling the cheerleaders). It was pep rally day, and Billie hated them.

She wasn’t paying much attention at all until Conner’s hand darted out in front of her face and caught what was apparently a t-shirt that the cheerleaders had aimed right at her head-or maybe Ethan’s, she wasn’t sure.

“What the hell was that?” Billie asked.

“Oops, our bad,” came the reply from the cheerleader with the t-shirt cannon.

“Maybe they missed?” Conner asked. Even he knew better, but Billie’s temper was best kept checked.

“Right, and I’m Charles Darwin,” Billie snapped. “Do you bimbos really think that anyone watches you because of your routines? They watch you because you’re pretty. Which is all good and well, but when it fades, you have what-no skill? Can you even dance or is it all just dumb routines?”

“Please, like a nerd like you can dance!”

Billie grinned-it was the same wicked grin she got when she got an idea in her head.

“Uh-oh,” Conner said. “Billie, no.” 

“Billie yes,” Billie replied. “Ethan, come with me, and bring your laptop. Pull up All about that Bass.’”

Ethan arched an eyebrow, shrugged, and followed along, He was just as curious as the rest of the school to see what Billie would do.

When the music began , Billie would hit the floor in an elaborate dance routine that seemed to be a mix of hip hop and martial arts-certainly not something you’d expect from a nerd, and certainly not Billie, of all people.

“What was that?” Ethan said. Meanwhile, up in the bleachers, Conner was grinning like an idiot.

“That, Ethan, was one of my Uncle Zack’s hip hop kido routines. I may be a nerd, but at least I have moves. If I were rapping, this is the part where I’d drop the mike, yes?”

“I think so,” Ethan said.

There was an awkward bit of silence before everyone broke out into applause. One of the cheerleaders reluctantly said, “Um, you know, with moves like that, have you ever considered-”

“Sorry, I only cheer for the soccer team,” Billie said, turning to wink at Conner. “Billie out.”
