The family of a charity worker stabbed to death in a random attack while returning home from buying her mother a gift has described her as “beautiful and kind-hearted.”
Johanita Dogbey, 31, is said to have been on the phone to her grandmother who heard a “terrible scream” when she was attacked from behind during the attack near Brixton’s O2 Academy on Bank Holiday Monday.
Ms Dogbey’s family described her as a “smart and loving girl who always helped anyone”.
“We are devastated by the news of the passing of our daughter,” they said. “She hasn’t got one bad bone in her body. She wouldn’t hurt a fly. We can’t believe a senseless crime like this has happened as we can’t imagine who would do this to her.
“Our hearts are completely broken and will not understand why someone would take our beautiful girl away from us, she will forever be in our hearts as we will carry on living life as gracefully and beautifully as she did.”
Police believe Ms Dogbey was attacked from behind by a stranger at around 4.04pm on Monday in Stockwell Park Walk. She was found with stab wounds and pronounced dead at the scene.
A 33-year-old man arrested in connection with the murder remains in custody.
A neighbour of Ms Dogbey said the 31-year-old had gone out to buy a present for her mother and was on her way home before she was attacked yards from her door.
Ms Dogbey’s father Yao told MailOnline: “We have no words at this moment. My daughter was beautiful and kind hearted.”
Ms Dogbey’s younger brother Maurice told the site: “We are trying to understand what has happened and are completely broken. As far as we know there was no link between my sister and the attacker. We are waiting to meet with the police to get a full update.
“This whole thing has left us devastated. It’s too much for us.”
Ms Dogbey was the founder of the Odette Foundation, a charity which supported people with sickle cell disease in Ghana and Togo.
Detective Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, local policing commander for Lambeth, said: “I am in regular contact with officers leading the investigation into this brutal attack and my thoughts continue to be with the woman's family and friends as they come to terms with this awful news. We will do everything we can to support them at this unimaginably difficult time.
“I recognise that the community will be experiencing worry and considerable concern and we have extra officers out in the community to answer questions and provide a visible presence.
“My police neighbourhood policing teams have visited local community centres and businesses taking on board concerns and to ensure we are having the right conversations with local people at this time.
“I would also ask people to share anything that they feel might help the investigating detectives.”
Police on Wednesday were granted more time to question a man arrested on suspicion of murder on Tuesday.
The 33-year-old can be held in custody for a further 36 hours after officers applied for a warrant of further detention at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Niall Horan and Olly Murs appeared in a video parody of The Office to honour the founders of their management company, Modest!.
The singers impersonated their managers - industry stalwarts Richard Griffiths and Harry Magee - in a mockumentary-style video at the company's offices in Parsons Green, west London, to celebrate the duo.
Griffiths and Magee founded their company in 2003 and managed One Direction from 2010 until their split in 2016. They currently represent artists such as Horan, Murs, Little Mix, Katherine Jenkins and the Spice Girls .
Within the tongue-in-cheek video, played at the Music Industry Trusts award at the Grosvenor House Hotel in central London on Monday night, Horan, 26, and Murs, 35, wore fake beards and dyed their hair grey while impersonating the two founders.
They are seen arguing about football, trying to encourage head of agency business CAA, Rob Light, to come to the awards ceremony and ducking out of work early to go and play golf.
The star-studded video also saw Horan’s One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne, playing a “tattooed IT worker”, Jenkins portraying an operatic office worker, Marvin Humes as a receptionist and Lemar playing a lactose intolerant member of staff.
The sketch was preceded by a series of messages of congratulations from other artists, including Little Mix, Harry Styles and the Osbournes.
In the video, Horan said: “I love these two men, can’t talk highly enough for them. They deserve every single thing that comes their way, including all the wine and cheese they demand at every single place they go. Richard and Harry, I love you both.”
Payne said: “Starting off at a young age as we did, I don’t think we could’ve really asked for better mentors at the start of it.
“It became so much more than just work, as it was a family. We grew up with you guys, so I can't thank you enough for that.”
Styles joked: "Harry and Richard? I don't think I ever met either of them," before adding: "Congratulations guys, I love you both very much. I'm really happy for you."
Ozzy Osbourne said: "Thank you for everything," while wife Sharon added: "Richard, we've been in this industry a long time together...it's well deserved for you to both receive this award."
Perrie Edwards of Little Mix said: “Harry and Richard, congratulations on your MITS award, you deserve it you gorgey huns. You’re very supportive of us, you always have our backs and we appreciate everything you’ve done through our whole careers. We love you so much. Congratulations!”
Other stars that honoured the businessmen included Louis Tomlinson, 5 Seconds of Summer, Murs and last year's winner, co-head of the CAA Emma Banks.
The awards ceremony, which is in its 28th year, was hosted by Rochelle and Marvin Humes, also raised money for the Brit Trust, which funds the Brit school in Croydon, and music therapy charity, Nordoff Robbins.
Jenkins, Horan, Murs and singer Alison Moyet also performed at the event, which was sponsored by PPL, SJM Concerts, Hipgnosis and Spotify.

Why would anyone lobby on behalf of dangerous dogs?

Why would anyone lobby on behalf of dangerous dogs?
As I boarded the train to the New Statesman office this morning I made sure to reserve a seat for Spitty, my Mozambique spitting cobra. He’s a beloved member of the family and I take him everywhere because it is my right to do so. Sadly my fellow passengers reacted to the presence of a three-foot long venomous snake with ignorance and, it has to be said, prejudice, backing away from Spitty in horror. “Don’t judge him on appearances!” I pleaded, as Spitty reared up, seeking a pair of human eyes to hose with his burning venom. “He’s just being friendly!”
Many readers will have experienced a similar situation, although perhaps with a different – and much more dangerous – animal: the dog. While there hasn’t been a fatal snake bite in the UK for 50 years, 2022 is now the worst year on record for fatal dog attacks. Nine people have been killed this year by dogs, while the number of people, mostly small children, who have been injured and disfigured is also at a record level. A week ago a surgeon at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital told ITV News he sees new victims of dog attacks on a daily basis.
Last month a five-year-old girl was playing outside her home in Croydon, south London, when a bull terrier pinned her to the ground, inflicting “life-changing” injuries to her face. Of the nine fatal dog attacks in the UK this year, six were by bull terriers and four were by one breed, the Bully XL. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Veterinary Medical Association found that bull terriers and rottweilers accounted for more than two thirds of fatal dog attacks in the US in one year.
This is a controversial thing to point out, however. A well-funded charity lobby, led by the RSPCA, Dogs Trust and Blue Cross is calling for the repeal of the Dangerous Dogs Act (1991), which bans certain breeds. They say this “breed-specific legislation” is discriminatory and unjust. While the charities themselves are careful to avoid making an offensive connection between the law as it applies to dog breeds and the racism experienced by millions of human beings, it seems to be a widespread view among activists, expressed in blogs, news interviews and petitions to parliament, that it amounts to “breedism”, “dog racism” and “basically racism”.
It’s important to weigh up the two sets of rights being debated here. On the one hand you have the right of five-year-olds not to be disfigured and traumatised for life; on the other, the right of adults to own certain breeds of dog.

The RSPCA claims that the Dangerous Dogs Act hasn’t prevented dog bites from more than doubling in the last decade. A similar argument could be made about tax evasion, or speeding, or burglary – laws that so many people get away with breaking – but all this means is that the law is unenforced. It does not mean the law is wrong.
Content from our partners
The charities opposing the act encourage a focus on “deed not breed”, which presumes that dogs are full citizens with the right to commit a “deed” – mauling a child with their teeth and claws – and then rehabilitate. The price of extending those rights to a dog is the safety of vulnerable humans.
Oddly enough, while the RSPCA campaigns against law that discriminates between dog breeds, it isn’t bothered about discriminating between species. Each year, thousands upon thousands of pigs (which are widely thought to be more intelligent than dogs) are electrocuted, minced and made into tasty, RSPCA-approved sausages. But then, the RSPCA is also very much the Royal Society for Getting People to Bequeathe it Money, and if you’re going to persuade the nation’s elderly to include you in their wills, a big-eyed pooch is just the job. Under capitalism, charity is as much a market as anything else.
This is the grim truth of the pet industry: in a country in which 3.9 million people live in poverty, the UK spends £10bn a year on dogs and £8bn a year on cats. The cats don’t care and the dogs, given half a chance, would eat us. The government should expand and enforce the laws that protect us from them.

Operation Sanctuary: Police say paying rapist ‘was right’ – BBC News
Image caption Steve Ashman said the informant was a jumping off point for the investigation
A police chief has said paying a child rapist 10,000 as part of an investigation into a grooming gang was the "right thing".
Northumbria Police's Steve Ashman said the information provided by the man led to the conviction of 17 men and a woman for abusing girls in Newcastle.
Charities have criticised the force for paying the criminal.
Mr Ashman told BBC News he was as "certain as I can be" that it was "morally" right.
"What we've ended up doing here is putting dangerous men behind bars and protecting vulnerable women and girls that we simply wouldn't have been able to do if we didn't have that jump off point we got [from the information]," he said.

The paedophile had himself served a prison sentence for rape.
The last of four trials, spread across two years, ended on Wednesday and in total 18 people, mostly of Asian backgrounds, were convicted of sexual exploitation and drugs offences.
Most of them were men from Pakistani, Bangladeshi or Indian backgrounds.
The court heard how vulnerable girls and women were abused at parties or "sessions" in Newcastle.
Newcastle child sex network convicted
"Vile crimes committed by evil men"
Northumbria Police asked a previously convicted child rapist if he could get them more information about the parties.
The NSPCC said that using him in this way was a decision that "crossed the line".
Jim Gamble, former head of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, said: "Personally, I can't envisage circumstances where I would have authorised payment to someone convicted of rape.
"I can't imagine how you could have control mechanisms in place with an informant of that type that you were going to task that would give reassurance that they still didn't represent a risk to young and vulnerable women."
However, Northumbria Police's Chief Constable Steve Ashman rejected suggestions the informant was encouraged to go to the parties in order to report back to them.
In fact, Mr Ashman said the informant was specifically told he would be arrested if he attended the parties himself.
He said: "In this specific instance, we used an informant in very controlled circumstances.
"The recruitment and registering of any informant is carefully risk assessed against what are the potential gains we can get from using that individual."
The defendants were convicted of abusing girls who were plied with alcohol and drugs before being forced to have sex.
A court heard the vulnerable victims, some as young as 14, were exploited by a "cynical organisation".
Over the course of the four trials, 20 young women gave evidence covering a period from 2011 to 2014.
The 18 defendants and their convictions
Mohammed Azram, 35 of Croydon Road, convicted of conspiracy to incite prostitution, sexual assault, supplying drugs to a victim

How Were You Told the Facts of Life?
Listening at the window during my Metrodeco Brighton show was a superfluity of nuns.
One glided up at curtain down and asked if I would sing at a convent charity evening.
I said, of course, sister.
The nun nodded. "Bless you. But just to correct you: not sister - but Mother Superior."
She wondered about the spoken material in my show, in case we might include some of it on the night?
I said I had been asking people how they had been told the facts of life...
Bernard, 72
My sister read about Dutch caps. We looked at Old Masters paintings and wondered how having those funny big white hats on their heads would stop women getting pregnant.
Susan, 46
At school we were told, "Your body is a temple of the Holy Ghost" before being shown a public information film which made us all scream "Yuk". Our biology teacher threatened to put on again Root Canal: The Musical.
Raymond, 51
With the individual sperms themselves being so microscopic, I thought you wouldn't feel then being ejaculated and wouldn't know when to break off with the intercourse. My physics teacher explained the emission process was pump-action and virtually impossible to ignore.
Which has very much proved to be the case, I've found.
Cassie, 19
My eleven-year-old twin sisters' head of year asked if they could be told at home about periods - definitely - and the facts of life, if possible. Mum talked to them separately. Milly had hysterics at the whole idea of periods and when mum tried to tell her the facts of life, stuck her fingers in her ears and sang One Direction. Carolina said periods sounded a bit drastic. She listened in silence to the facts of life, then said that she hadn't quite got it, so maybe when mummy and daddy next had a go at that she could watch?
Marion, 62
My mother said the sexual act was something I should use. I should flaunt the potential of a man getting it from me. I should manipulate. I should cajole. I should go so far and no further. I could be voluptuous. Flagrant; bestial.
I said, "Yes, thank you, but what about the act itself?"
She said, "What do I think I am, a bloody biology teacher?"
Mikey, 29
At fourteen, my dad warned me off booze and drugs and told me where the condoms were. He later asked me to stop traumatising my autistic younger brother by inflating the condoms into limbless Godzillas.
Trudy, 71
I was told not to worry when I started periods because even the Queen and Princess Margaret had the same. When we had whooping cough, we were taken down the livestock market for the benefit of the cows' sweat. If ever a bull mounted a cow, we were told to look away and remember that we had to keep ourselves pure.
When local girls got pregnant, it was all "she doesn't know how it happened". It made me terrified that even if I stood next to my boyfriend to kiss him goodnight by some mysterious happening I could have a baby. I never sat next to my male cousins at tea, either - always at least place one away or diagonally opposite. And I moved seats when a man sat next to me on the tram. This was when trams were just plain trams. Not like today going from East Croydon to Elmers End by enhanced tram.
Gareth, 42
My uncle pointed to a bull and said, "Bull has cow, cow has calf."
Larissa, 82
Oh, you've been talking to me lovely friend in the John Lewis Food Hall, haven't you? Has he put you onto me? Oh. That's...well, I did think he was my friend. It's always been a bit up and down with him. The other ladies in the Mansions said I was wrong to talk to him so much. Kalia said I didn't even know his name. I did - it was on his badge. Eric. But I'd noticed he did seem to just be staring at me the most recent times I've been shopping. I got so worried and asked him if the ladies - Kalia and the rest of them - were right and I shouldn't have been talking to him all those times? About my health scares. That particular time I was speaking to him I'd just had a particularly serious scare. My breast implants. My fourth husband paid for my breast implants; and he's kept the receipt. Oh, I was anxious. The next time I saw Eric was after I'd been for my consultation regarding my breast implants. I decided not to bother him. He was where he usually is, opposite the tea. I just kept my eyes on the display. And he - oh, I was so happy - he said hello and asked how I was. I gushed. I couldn't help it. Gushed about how relieved I was that he was talking to me, as I'd been so afraid that he had never wanted to, really. He explained that at his age, nineteen, he just felt that he had so little experience in such matters as mine and could offer no advice. I said that he should never have worried himself, the scare about my breast implants was over. I wouldn't need to have them taken out after all - I just needed to have my nipples shifted.
What? So, you weren't speaking to my lovely friend Eric? What was the question again? Ah...well, I was a debutante and lived in the town rather than the country, so knew nothing. If I'd known what my second husband in particular had in store for me, I'd have taken the veil.
Thomas, 76
We used to go to Leicestershire every summer for six weeks and there were chickens.
Sonia, 46
My mother drew a picture of an erect penis and then of something that in no way resembled a vagina and said, "That, goes in there. But only when the people concerned truly love each other." I later found out that she had been asked to give me this talk by Miss Cavendish, my house mistress. I also found out that my mother had told Miss Cavendish how when I watched cartoons I masturbated.
"Except," Miss Cavendish said, "your mother being such the scholar didn't say that you masturbated, but talked of your fetishistic auto-erotic tendencies!"
Sian, 62
My mother caught me masturbating when I was nine and a bit. She dragged me in front of a mirror, made me open my mouth and pointed at my uvula.
"See that thing dangling there at the back of your throat?" she said. "Every time you touch yourself like you were just doing down there, it grows a bit. And a bit more. Until eventually it chokes you."
Sarah, 53
When I was about nine, I started asking mummy. When I was fifteen, she said, "You know when we let Saltash off her lead in Stanley Park that time and that boy dog came ever so close to her and did that funny dance with her? Well, mummies and daddies do that. It's natural and nothing to be ashamed of and might be lovely."
Peter, 72
My mum refused to tell me and told me to ask my nan. I asked nan. She said, "No, sorry, Peter. I never even told your mother or your uncles any of that. If push came to shove we might maybe have taken them to the aquarium."
Fiona, 68
I was told that as soon as the ring went on my finger in the church a baby would begin to grow in my belly.
Francis, 73
When I was fifteen my father said he had something to tell me, took me into the bathroom, went bright red and locked the door. I thought, oh god, he's going to tell me that he's gone bankrupt or that mummy's died. Such a relief when he started squirming his way through telling me the facts of life! I already knew them - we had a gypsy family in the village and I was at school with one of the sons - but I wanted my father to be uncomfortable. I only remember certain details of what he told me, such as him calling the penis your person and describing the inside of the vagina as like the nasal passages when one is suffering from a very bad cold. Oh, and he used the full spermatozoa and said it was like live, bleached tapioca, could I imagine? No, frankly, I couldn't. He ended his talk by saying that if I caught anything it would break my mother's heart. "And homosexuality is just silly."
I didn't get to tell the Mother Superior any of the above. I mentioned the subject of my spoken material, and she interrupted: "How lovely that you will sing for us. But about you going around and asking what you have, can I just say this: God does not want us to overreach ourselves."

Most right swiped man on Tinder finds love the traditional way
Stef has now found love (Picture: Mercury Press)
A male model named ‘Mr Tinder’ after becoming the dating app’s most swiped right man in history has finally found love – and no, he didn’t find it on the app.
29-year-old Stefan Pierre-Tomlin was announced Tinder’s most swiped man back in 2017, after the app announced 14,600 people had swiped right for him in two years.
However, he’s now dating former X Factor contestant Natasha Boon, and fell for her in a completely traditional way after they met through a mutual friend on a night out.
Stefan, who spent five years looking for love on dating apps before meeting Natasha in April this year, said: ‘When I first saw Natasha, she instantly reminded me of Marilyn Monroe – she wore a tight red dress, red lippy and her trendy blonde hair was styled amazingly.
‘She knocked me off my feet and that rarely happens with me.
‘I had butterflies in my stomach, which left me thinking “this isn’t normal for me”!
‘After we spent an hour or so hanging out and chatting that night, I grabbed her number before my manager ushered me home.
‘We ended up texting all night long and the rest is history – now we’re totally in love.
Stefan was the most right swiped guy on Tinder (Picture: Mercury Press)
‘Usually people these days use modern technology to find love but Natasha and I just have that natural chemistry, so it was nice to have met her the “old-fashioned” way.
‘After the whole Mr Tinder hype I kind of thought the universe would help me meet “Miss Right” offline, and there we have it!’
After becoming ‘Mr Tinder’ thanks to an average of 20 women a day swiping right for him over 24 months, Stefan, from South London, hit the small screen on TV dating shows like Celebs Go Dating.
But he struggled to build a connection with girls through the app, despite it leading to 15 dates over the two years, including one during a lads’ holiday to Marbella.
Stefan did get into two relationships from his Tinder matches, but said generally the they didn’t work out as the women were more interested in fame than his personality.
So he fell head over heels when Natasha first caught his eye this April at London’s Opium nightclub, where she was performing for the Big Narstie wrap party.
He didn’t get the chance to speak to her that night, but luckily soon after a mutual friend who was singing at a private rooftop party in Croydon invited Natasha along when he was there too.
After swapping digits and texting non-stop, the couple met up for their first date in July at Hampstead Heath Park – and have been inseparable ever since.
The couple have already moved in together (Picture: Simon Jacobs/Mercury Press)
Stefan came to the date straight from a charity football match in Scotland and was armed with a ‘Mr Tinder’ branded suitcase, which was when Natasha found out about his unique accolade – and prompted some awkward questions.
Natasha, from Camden, said: ‘At first, Stef’s nickname was weird for me because I didn’t understand why he would need to use an online dating app – he’s so handsome.
‘I do get a little jealous when I think about all the women he’s matched with, but I appreciate that a lot of people fancy him and I feel privileged to be with him.
‘I’ve never used dating apps myself, but I think they’re great for people who are looking for love in the modern era because these days people seem to be busier than ever before, so they deliver convenience in the mix of people’s busy schedules.’
When Stefan was first dubbed Mr Tinder by a women’s magazine, he thought it was all a big practical joke but reckons the key to his successful swipe right stats was his TV appearances and modelling.
While he was active on the app, he found it challenging to find people who wanted to get to know him for him.

Stefan added: ‘When I was still on dating apps, I got the impression that people just wanted to speak with Mr Tinder so that didn’t make it easy for me, in the sense of working out who genuinely liked me versus those who wanted to be a bit of a roadie.’
Now Stefan, who is also a trained pilot, is head over heels for Natasha.
The former dating app addict claims he’s now matched more than 10 couples by introducing them to each other at club nights and events, who are now married or enjoying solid relationships.
Natasha added: ‘I love his outgoing, witty and humorous personality, and his respect for people – it’s really endearing, which allows me to think of a future with him as I hold respect real high.
‘He surprises me with different red lipstick all the time too, and I bought him a moonstone for his birthday which represents protection and his pure personality.
‘I also love that he’s a pilot – that’s a winner for me as I love flying.’
Since their first date, the couple have gone from strength to strength after becoming official in July and have already moved in together.
Stefan said: ‘We’d like to start making music together and vlogging, and if things continue to go well in the future we’d like to get engaged, buy a house and start a family together.
‘I love the way Natasha is so patient and that she’s a great team player, she’s kind, importantly she understands my industry and work because she’s a signed singer and been on national television.
‘I also love her voice so much – it makes my hair stand on end, not that I’ve got much.’

Manchester Arena blast victim says attackers face still haunts her
Saffie Roussos, eight, was among 22 people who died in the attack at Manchester Arena
The parents of the youngest person to die in the Manchester Arena terror attack have labelled the Government’s £11,000 compensation offer a ‘complete insult’.
Saffie Roussos, eight, was among 22 people who died in the attack at an Ariana Grande concert in May 2017.
Her parents Lisa and Andrew Roussos, from Leyland, Lancashire, who are launching a charity to help support families affected by terror attacks, said they felt let down by the Government.
Speaking to the BBC, Mrs Roussos, 48, said: ‘We was offered £5,500 each for death of Saffie. It’s a complete insult.’
Saffie was at the concert with her mother and sister, Ashlee Bromwich, when suicide bomber Salman Abedi, 22, detonated a device in the arena’s foyer.
Injured victims, or the families of those killed in the attack, could apply for compensation to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA), under the Government’s criminal injuries compensation scheme.
The authority’s complex rules mean relatives of those killed in crimes often get less than people who suffer even minor injuries.
Mr Roussos, 44, said £11,000 for Saffie’s death was the ‘maximum’ offer. ‘A charity needs to be there to help the victims of terrorism,’ he added. ‘There’s no help.’
Saffie’s mother Lisa Roussos (pictured together) said she felt let down by the Government
Lisa and Andrew Roussos, pictured at Saffie’s funeral at Manchester Cathedral in July 2017, are launching a charity to help support families affected by terror attacks
The couple said they felt ‘stuck in 2017’ and had struggled to come to terms with Saffie’s death following the bombing.
Mrs Roussos is taking part in part in the Great Manchester Run on Sunday to launch charity MCR 22 after overcoming injuries she suffered in the blast and learning to walk again.
She spent six weeks in a coma and only learned of Saffie’s death when she regained consciousness.
Describing the moment she woke up in hospital with her husband at her bedside, she said: ‘I can remember thinking: Why has he not mentioned Saffie?’

Who is entitled to what from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority?
The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) has a highly complex tier system of deciding who is eligible for awards.
Injuries must be serious enough to merit compensation, and the scheme takes into account factors such as burns, paralysis, illness, mental injury and sexual abuse in deciding what tier the victim falls under.
The minimum amount for a successful claim on the scheme is £1,000 with the maximum being £250,000.
Often those who were direct victims of a violent crime and were affected in some way – whether that be from physical or sexual abuse, disfigurement or loss of earnings – are paid out more.
For example, someone who has a serious disfigurement can get up to £3,500, and the loss of both legs can receive £110,000
But relatives who lose someone as a result of a violent crime often receive less, and can only be awarded up to £5,500.
In May, a recruitment consultant won nearly £87,000 compensation from a man who raped her after they met on a night out.
In one case, a teacher, 57, secured £9,611 from the CICA after being assaulted by a pupil known to have aggressive behaviour.
Last year, a 28-year-old man, from Croydon, was awarded £22,000 in damages after being deliberately infected with HIV.
‘And I knew. I just knew. I thought: ‘If I’m this badly hurt and she was a tiny eight-year-old then what chance would she have?’ I said ‘she’s gone, isn’t she?”
A Ministry of Justice spokesman told MailOnline: ‘The Manchester Arena attack was an abhorrent act of terrorism and our thoughts remain with the family of Saffie and with the other victims.
‘No amount of money can compensate for the loss of a loved one, but payments from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme aim to address the mental and physical impact of such a tragedy.
‘That is why CICA has a dedicated team to assess Manchester applications as quickly as possible, which has already awarded more than £1 million to hundreds of victims and made interim payments of £211,300 to others awaiting a decision.’
Bereaved families, injured victims and those suffering psychological trauma also received money donated by members of the public.
Payments from the We Love Manchester fund set up after the attack, were separate to the Government’s scheme with more than £20million handed out by this year.
Saffie’s parents spoke out as a 16-year-old girl who was just five yards away from the attacker when he detonated his bomb has revealed she still has nightmares about it.
Eve Senior spent ten nights in hospital after suffering 18 shrapnel wounds, a severed nerve in her leg and burns in the attack by Abedi that killed 22 people.
The schoolgirl from Queensbury, West Yorkshire, became the face of the attack in after being photographed limping away from the scene covered in blood.
Now, two years after Eve was helped away barefoot with her jeans ripped apart, she has spoken of how she feels Abedi is watching her in her room when she sleeps.

Eve (left, in August 2017) feels attacker Salman Abedi (right), 22, is watching her in her room
Eve’s mother Natalie also spent ten nights in hospital after the explosion at the concert
She told the Daily Mirror: ‘I just remember his face. He didn’t look at me, he was just looking straight forward. He walked past, then it was literally two seconds.’
Eve said she began to have nightmares about Abedi from the second day in hospital, including ‘dreams where he’s hurting me, or sometimes he’s watching me’.
She added: ‘I have this same dream where he does watch me. I had it in hospital, he came into the hospital room. I’ve had it at home also – he comes into my bedroom.
‘Sometimes if I close my eyes just before I sleep, it’s as if he is chasing me. I never see his body, it’s his head, his face and his hair.’
Eve’s mother Natalie also spent ten nights in hospital after the explosion at the Ariana Grande concert, although her younger sister Emilia was not badly hurt.
Eve began her GCSEs this week and wants to be a paediatric nurse after taking inspiration from those who helped her in the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
In December 2017, Eve defied the odds to perform in her dance school’s Christmas show
Eve is pictured with her mother Natalie and father Andrew, three months after the blast
She has previously spoken about this desire to go into nursing, saying: ‘Before Manchester I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grow up.
‘But staying in hospital and seeing what the nurses do and how good they are – when I’m older I want to be a nurse.’
In December 2017, Eve defied the odds to perform in her dance school’s Christmas show after battling through three operations.
She said at the time: ‘I can’t dance the same as I used to and I won’t for quite a long time, but I just thought, no, it will be possible. I wasn’t going to sit and watch.’
A report found in March 2018 that some victims were forced to wait two hours for help from firemen after ‘riskaverse’ bosses kept them away.
As ambulances flooded to the scene, fire chiefs moved officers to a station three miles away because they feared a marauding terrorist was still on the loose.

London Marathon 2018 Race Report
AHHH ITS MARATHON DAY It’s 5.40am, haven't slept, a thunder storm kindly ruined that.
A bagel with strawberry jam for breakfast.
Kit all ready from the night before.
I hug my Mum goodbye and try not to think about the next time I'll see her I'm running the marathon.
Check the weather a thousand times, yes still going to be 24.5 degrees the hottest on record.
Off I go from sunny Croydon. Let's do this.
GETTING IN THE RED 'ZONE'
I followed the sea of trainers to Greenwich. I made my way up to the red starting zone - found my lorry to dump my bag in. And then queued for the loo's twice even though I didn't need to go - just a ritual really. My coach had told me to do a 15min warm up before going into the pens. I was looking around thinking where the hell am I going to do this as there were bodies of people everywhere. I felt pretty overwhelmed but knew I needed to make a plan. So I decided to do my stretches in the shade under a tree.
WARMING UP (LITERALLY) Then I was like right where am I going to warm up these legs. I saw near to the fenced off start area 'more serious' looking runners wearing their club vests simply doing an up and down lap by some portaloo's - yessss on a boiling day, not an ideal location. I got myself in the mix, I did feel like a bit of a dick as I think I was the only girl doing it. I did 5 mins and then thought its getting so hot I don't want to start the race a sweaty mess.
So off i went to find my start pen and my coach had also said if I couldn't do the warm up to do some squats while waiting. Again felt like an idiot. No one else was doing it but I thought what the heck I don't know anyone so just did it. In my head before the marathon I thought I would perhaps make friends with people in the start pen and it would be super chatty. However it really wasn't like that, people were either getting in the zone, or sat down under the trees to the side to save energy. I surprised myself as it was quite an emotional moment when the queen started the marathon and the national anthem played. For a minute I felt like I was an olympian and I knew it was the start of a special day!
As we made our way down I had two other groups start in from of me - the sub 3.45hour and the 4.15 hour crew behind. For a mass organised international race, almost 41,000 people I was hugely disappointed that there was no red zone sub 4 hour pacer. I hadn't planned on running with one but when I knew there wasn't one to help set the first few miles pace I was disappointed and I'm sure a lot of other people in my start group were feeling that too.
THE ROUTE This will sound weird but before the marathon every time I tried to look at the marathon route I felt sick to my stomach with nerves so would have to stop. A lot of the route for someone who's lived in London for 8 years it was still a magical mystery tour to even me.
LETS GO The first 3 miles, I felt good, it was a pinch myself moment reality check. I couldn't believe I was running the London Marathon something I had watched for years on TV growing up and it was really a dream to think it would ever been possible. The crowd support from the get go was in incredible and it's so wonderful to see how the city of London people will scream, shout and cheer for random strangers. I loved it! The signs were hilarious too and did make me smile inside even during some pain cave moments. I have so many favourite moments but early on when we merged with the other waves green and blue around 3 miles - I suddenly felt like this is it, this is really happening. this is the London Marathon 2018.
SEEING YOUR CHEER SQUAD Around mile 5 I could see Charlie AKA '@TheRunnerBeans' a little ahead, Charlie was pacing the green wave 4hour 45mins. This year was the first year the organisers to prevent congestion and to try to get people to start more quickly tried 3 different start areas - all to merge together at mile 3. This meant that even though I was trying to pace myself for sub 4 hours I would see the pacers for all different timings over the course. So when I saw Charlie ahead I wasn't panicked as I knew I was running the correct pace for when I had started the race. Anyway I shouted out to say hi, Charlie was running with someone dressed as an ice cream, incredible costume but such a tease as would of loved an ice cream. Charlie gave me a nice little motivational boast, to say "I better not see you again and off I went".
Around mile 10 I was happily surprised to see my triathlon partners in crime Hannah and Leigh and even with my headphones in managed to spin round to give them a wave. I hadn't realised they were coming to watch but gave me another big wave of motivation to keep on at it. I knew the next person I would see would be my Mum at the Guide Dogs UK cheer station. At this point was still holding onto the sub 4 hour pace.
11.5miles - There she is my Mummy waving away at the Guide Dogs UK stand, I remember seeing her first and shouting as I saw the Guide Dogs UK banners, I could tell she didn't know what to do when she saw me, if she should give me water, take a photo but she waved lots and shouted, which was perfect.
HALF WAY My girlies Yiselle and Emily - I literally see them a mile off, they were on the other side of the returning runners, I weaved to the edge to shout across as they've got these brilliant bright hot pink banners with my name on. Again its funny because when you spot your friends first you startle them and they gave me the biggest cheer, which is just the best feeling to keep going. With a big smile on my face I keep chugging on.
15 miles - a dark cloud of pain comes over me. I hoped but knew it wouldn't be a race without pain. I'd been having physio for about 4 weeks before the marathon. My right knee which had been a little shit before when I did the Edinburgh Marathon in 2015 had been causing me a lot of discomfort on the long runs in training. It was a total repeat of Edinburgh, no knee pain (magic tape) but my hip went. It feels like your joint and bone are grinding down on each other. Its vile and deeply a lot of swear words unpleasant. I was armed with Ibuprofen and Paracetamol which I popped back (not easy when your mouth is as dry as a desert)
I had to have a strong word with myself here as It felt like I had gone from a good pace to a total shuffle. I knew I had to slow down or I'd do a lot more damage too early to be able to keep going to the end. I had been clinging onto the sub 4 hour pace and didn't have much buffer time to keep it. This was now fading... I couldn't get upset about it because there really wasn't much more I could have given at this stage 25km in. I had to carry on and do my best. It was a mental fight now not to stop, especially as so many people were walking around me. That's tough. (When you look back at the race times on average I slowed down 10 seconds per km. Thats really not much but at the time I felt like a total snail)
17/18miles (It's a blur) I see Mummy again and its a nice early surprise as thought she was going to be around 20/21 miles. It's a welcomed surprise because she hands me an extra gel and I take it then.
Somewhere around canary wharf I see another penis - Who would have thought! Or was I hallucinating.... okay it was inflatable. (this will make more sense if you keep reading)
Mile 19 I couldn't tell you in what order this happened as its really blurry as I’m drunk on running. I saw Yiselle and Emily again -those signs they made were so easy to spot. Loved it. Emily handed me a bottle of water which was really needed as was baking. I was struggling still but the girls said they couldn't tell (or they were just being polite)
A few moments later on the other side of the road I see Brendan and Christian. Brendan has been an absolute running rock during the training and came out with me in the beast from the east x2 totally voluntarily. I owe you a lot!!! I wasn't the most joyful runner on that training run - I shouted at him at one point in Victoria Park for 'running up a hill' it was pretty much flat but at the time in the cold, wet, wind and snow it felt like Everest. So cool to see them though.
Mile 20 ish A proposal!!! Not for me... I hear a big loud cheer echoing around (almost like a Mexican wave in a cheer form) a guy is on one knee proposing to his girlfriend in the crowd. I smile and keep running. God knows how he managed to get back up from being on one knee! But a special moment to see.
THE FINAL HOUR In my head when I was struggling I was like Abi all you have to do is get to mile 20, you know this part of London, you love running along the embankment and you've done this part a zillion times so it won't feel so hard. This was pretty much true when I got to it. Its strange because I've been running for 3 hours, seems like a long time right? But it went so fast. I was in a lot of pain, I took another round of painkillers for the final push. I had really wanted to negative splits for the second half but it was frigging hot and tough. By this point I was happy to hold onto my current pace. I knew I was still not that far over 4 hours so was still on for a huge PB. In fact after I learnt I overtook almost 3275 people and only 163 people who took me on the second half.
Mile 24 Running in Blackfriars tunnel, its dark, shady and some relief from the sun, I let out a massive FU******K for some reason that made some of the pain disappear for a second. Oh and my head phones die. PERFECT.
Mile 25 Who knew there's a bit of a incline of the embankment. Was glad to see the band at the top. The tarmac temperature is now 27 degrees. I'm really in a zone now of getting to the end. I see a lot of charities cheering, my Mum had told me where she was but I totally miss her and my other friends Lily, Lorna and Phil who were at Somerset House. I see the bend for Westminster, a lot of people are struggling now walking, some alone, some aided by the marshals. I'm coming onto birdcage walk (another one I ran a lot in training, which is good as mentally I can work out how far I have to go)
600 metres to go I can do this, I smile at the camera, I've got this.
385 yards, that famous bend at Buckingham Palace. I can see it. I'm know the end is in sight. From here I pick up the pace, and find the strength to pump those arms to go for that sprint finish.
I can see the finish line, hang on a minute theres 3 different finish lines... which one to go for. I can see the middle is more crowded, I make a run for the left side. I cannot believe it I'm over the line. I've completed it. 26.2 miles. 4.09.53 (PB of 31mins 52secs)
Thank you to Guide Dogs UK for letting me be apart of their team, it was a proud moment. The biggest thank you to every single person who sponsored me, thats 99 of you! All brilliant people and very lucky to have you as friends.
If you want to read more about the high/low lights and just want more details keep reading on...
SEEING THE SIGHTS / THE HIGHLIGHTS Greenwich had a great vibe, it was packed with people and you feel incredible seeing them all cheering people on. This is where I saw my first penis (inflatable) but it got my attention!
First big wow wow moment was Cutty Sark, I saw less of the boat than I would of liked just remembering all the hoarding around it with advertising but the atmosphere was totally electric. LOVED IT. Felt like a running superstar at that moment.
Tower Bridge. Now theres a lot of hype about this bridge and it was pretty magical but for me it was a bit overwhelming. So many amazing charities and people cheering you just don't know where to look.
Embankment Its wall to wall people and thats exactly what you need at this stage. Its perfect. I loved running along here normally but actually couldn't see the thames at all.
Big Ben Its super cool here, you know you're going to do it. MAGICAL feeling.
Keep reading now, its almost like you've finished a marathon reading thus far.
HYDRATION It was hot early on and even though I had my hydration vest on with electrolytes I was getting through it faster than usual. I avoided the first few water stations where it was like feeding time in a shark pool with people fighting to reach a hand to get water. After a while I knew I needed to bring my body temp down. I wore white to not reflect the sun but from then on I would take a sip of the water, tip the rest over my head, down my back, chest and wrists - basically everywhere. it wasn't a sexy wet competition vibe, defo would have lost if it was. (Disclaimer, I had a lot of body glide on so was protected fortunately from the chaffing)
I kept to the plan, after 30mins first gel and then every 50 mins and in between took a cliff shot blok - this seemed to work really well for me as officially I didn't hit the wall but hit something else later...
SHOWERS I've never been so happy in all my life to see the fireman, they're hoses were big and full of water... and it sprayed the whole road. Running through it felt like heaven. I wish there had been more. The London Marathon official showers were puny and again was a total stamped of chaos to get anywhere close.
MY OOTD I got a lot of stick from my friends for my outfit. However I know it wasn't particularly the most stylish look it kept me cool. (I would also of taken the mick out of me too)
2XU Visor (I felt like my Grandma, but she's cool so thats okay) Love the colour - first time wearing one in a race, and yes would wear again if sunny.
2XU Compression Shorts These were great, as didn't ride up or give me a wedge.
2XU Compression Socks These were good, no blisters, they are however pretty thick and found it hard at mile 20 bashing my feet in them when I had cramp. I think I might prefer a thinner sock. They slightly rolled down on my knee too but didn't cause much bother.
Nike Medium Support Bra Its a trusty bra, and only had a tiny tiny bit of chaffing. So pretty happy with that.
Nike Dri-FIT top I tested out my hydration pack in other runs and it rubbed with vest tops. I normally don't like wear tops with capped sleeves but to save the chaff it was fine. The fabric absorbed my sweat and water quickly which was just what I needed in the climate.
Saucony Guide ISO I've worn these since 2013 when I first had gait analysis done and they've been great. I was a bit unsure about the latest updated design - new fancy fabric but all good. No blisters and foot was well supported.
Sunwise Sunglasses Think I need to upgrade these are some point. I bought these from Runners Need in Brighton back in August when I was training for a half marathon. I look hideous in them but they didn't move or slip. They did the job they needed.
Nathan Hydration Pack I did a bit of research on these before I bought one, but saw a post Charlie (@The Runner Beans) had done on them and she had got on well with this one and its pink. Done deal No chaffing. Room for phone, gels and shot bloks with easy access at the front.
I'll be surprised if you read this far but this is the best bit...and I can write it because I don't anyone would read this far - this is basically an ultra marathon now in writing.
PRE RACE FEARS My biggest fears before the marathon were:
1. Not being able to run the whole way. 2. Not being able to run and take the gels and...3. Shitting myself because of the gels. (We all know about Paula, its happens)
I'd struggled with all of these things over the training, doing your long runs is tough because your bound to come to traffic lights or reasons to stop so I had a real fear that I wasn't fit enough to run the whole way. I know its mental when I tell people because their like you trained so hard for this but I was still worried.
Gels, are my best friend and worst enemy. Without giving you TMI training had been a total mixed bag with these. One run totally fine, next run I'm SERIOUSLY panicking looking for a loo in a random cricket club, cafe or shopping centre. I can pretty much tell you were all the public loos are now in London. However for running that amount of time I needed those gels. I took an Imodium in the morning before I left and as soon as they were doing the countdown for the marathon to start I felt a nervous pang in my stomach and thought this is too risky and took another Imodium.
BIGGEST TIPS If you can avoid telling people what time you're aiming to do it in, it will save you some stress you don't need. I really struggled with the pressure because I had been very open that I wanted to do it under 4 hours. I was always on the fence whether I could do it. And actually had there not been so much congestion around parts of the course/it was stand still at some water stations. I may of been a bit closer. Who knows on a less sunny day. Good job I've got New York when it certainly won't be hot in November.
Lastly smile and enjoy it, it goes in a flash and you'll want to remember as much as possible. I was on cloud 9 for days after - and just wanted to do it all over again. I really couldn't have had a better experience and really urge anyone to give it ago. You won't regret it!!! / You might hate me in January when you start training but when you've got the medal theres no better feeling. It's totally worth it.
Thank you for reading and if you enjoyed reading it let me know as maybe I'll keep doing it. And if you hated it let me know that to so I keep doing it :-)
