The Cleaning Lady 3x07

I wanted to watch this episode a couple of times before committing any thoughts to the page, because, for an episode that took place largely in just two buildings, there is a lot going on.

Rather than try to go through the episode chronologically I'll just talk about the major character beats in what I think was the best episode of the season and one of the best of the entire series.

Thony was all over the place in this episode, and her obsession with "justice" for Arman is going to get someone killed, hopefully not one of her family. Once she dropped Dante in it, and Ramona took care of him it looked like she might be satisfied, but when she found out that Ramona is also "Marina", the name written in powder on the glass tray in the kidnap house, she went off on a new tangent, this time against Ramona. That's not going to end well.

I know we're supposed to feel bad for Thony because she was in love with Arman, but (as someone who isn't a fan of adultery) the only person I really felt for in this episode was Nadia. She was totally lost, and she had to deal with having her dead husband's "other woman" at his wake. The moment with Isabelle was nice, bringing the melted toy caddy that Arman had rescued from the backyard fire pit - but even that was tainted by Thony stealing it and giving it to Luca at the end of the episode.

Then she also had to deal with all the Sanchez-Morales family chaos - from Ramona getting her to throw Thony under the bus at the beginning, to Jorge accusing her of being behind the kidnapping (more on that later, he does redeem himself), to Eduardo and Teresa showing up and verbally going after Ramona for causing Arman's death ( and apparently, also alienating Jorge from them) and causing a shouting match (almost a fight) at the wake.

The best scenes with Nadia however, were her interactions with Jorge. Over the course of the episode they go from snarky adversaries to a real understanding through a conversation about the loss of his wife (she now has a name - Vanessa) and the nature of grief - to anger and comfort. Their chemistry is fantastic, and if I didn't already know that the show intends to throw Thony at Jorge, I'd be shipping the hell out of them. Talk about the hottest couple on prime-time TV right now. But, having said that, I was yelling "Do NOT kiss her" at the end when they were getting close. Those face touches would have been "pre-kiss" in most other scenarios, but I was glad they dodged the obvious "grief-sex" conclusion to that scene.

Jorge was the other main player in this episode and we got to see all different sides of him this week. He's still trying to protect Thony, despite her efforts to put herself and her family directly in Ramona's sights. He warned her multiple times that she needed to leave not just La Habana (when she shows up for the velorio) but Vegas altogether. But he also gave her the picture Luca had drawn for Arman and took her evidence of Dante's complicity to Ramona, while making sure that Ramona didn't turn it back on Thony.

Much of his interaction this week was with Nadia - already mentioned above, but his discussion with her about losing Vanessa was particularly poignant, and the discussion of "burning it all down" comes full circle later in the episode.

There are multiple levels of loss and betrayal for him this week. Not just Arman - I think he calls him "mi sobrino" for the first time in this episode - to his discussions of Vanessa - to Dante's betrayal - to the reveal of Ramona's betrayal in alienating him from the family when they left. In the second episode we hear him talk about how they threw them out and "treated us like trash" and the look on his face this week, as Teresa revealed that they begged Ramona to let Jorge stay with them, but she forbade them from contacting him, was a masterclass in background acting.

So, he goes and "burns it all down" in spectacular mob-assassin fashion. I admit to a bit of a competency-kink and watching him exit the Porsche, pull the slide on the 9mm and gun down four of the Devil's Breath accomplices and set the place ablaze in the coldest-of-blood, was actually rather sexy. But then it was sad again when he leaned over Dante's body and said (I think - it was very soft) "You were like a brother, compadre."

I think the breaking point with him and Ramona is coming soon - the preview for the next episode shows Jorge pointing a gun at Thony and Ramona saying "Just shoot her." We all know that isn't going to happen.

ETA: and I just loved the way Jorge gunned down four people, set fire to a building, cleaned the grip of the pistol, put it in his dead compadre’s hand and got back into his Porsche cayenne and carefully fastened his seatbelt. You wouldn’t want to risk being pulled over on your way home from a little evening of arson and homicide.

Vanessa was found in a dumpster. Swaddled in a towel and screaming. It was an elderly homeless woman who took her in, only to pass away when Nessa turned 9. To a degree, she never understood why the woman would take her in when there was nothing to her name. Though, she did manage to survive for 9 years, and it was because of that very woman that Nessa understood how to run the streets to her advantage. It wasn't until Nessa was 16 that she was caught by a magician for pickpocketing his wallet. It was the only time she's ever been caught in her 7 years of trickery. Through this man, she made a deal to be his magician's assistant in order to be partners and run a con, all to be able to learn some better slight of hand. It was a very great act, entertaining people only to then take from them. This way of life not only excited Nessa, but it also was keeping her lights on in her shoebox of a shitty apartment. When she turned 18, she took all the money they made together and seemed to disappear to the richer area of Vegas. Her eyes were saucers, the greed mixed with her need for survival having her take all she learned and turn it on the rich and wealthy bachelors who turned up in Vegas. Her favorite where the ones on a business trip. Their black cards the reason she has the amount of Chanel she does and her Maserati. It was an easy con, to portray herself as something she wasn't in order to get close, bleed them dry and then go off to the next. The last con, she married a billionaire, waited for him to go on a business trip, took the money and bolted. This time, instead of just a new area of Vegas, she took off to Anchorage. Now, she's living her best life. She won a little run-down club in the area and flipped it into Seventh Heaven. Rumor is that she has a secret area of the club that turns into Club Rouge - where anyone's wildest dream could come true. Even hers.

Vanessa is always the life of the party. She's jokingly awkward, and it's all a part of her charm. She's definitely guarded, and hasn't ever been caught by the police because she's so good at coming up with stories on-the-spot and throwing off suspicion. Nessa is loyal, but only if she feels there is something in it for her in the relationship. She's accepting of anyone and everyone and really pushes for people to be their authentic selves, mostly because she hides pieces of herself due to her past and has no choice. She's the type to drag you out if you're having a bad day and getting up on tables to dance. She has her hand on the pulse of the city and usually has an in for all the newest and hottest areas due to the fact she's a nightclub owner. She loves weed, card games, and conspiracy theories (grab your foil hat). She appreciates humor and intelligence in others, and shows her sarcasm when she thinks someone is stupid lol. Uh, she is brilliant and it's interesting because she dropped out of high school - mostly cause it bored her. She somewhat regrets it now and wishes she got a degree. A Tall Dark Trouble, Vanessa Montalban, Book Review.

I received a copy of this title from Netgalley. My thoughts are my own. I requested this title because I enjoyed the author's short story in an upcoming anthology, Night of the Living Queers: 13 Tales of Terror Delight. I found much to enjoy in this story, and I recommend it, but I can't say I loved it, and it took me a while before the pages turned themselves, if you know what I mean. Half of the story is set in 80s Cuba, and I really liked those portions with Anita. In the modernish day, we're in Miami, and we follow 2 sisters, Delphi and Lela, each with magical abilities. One sister is more eager to explore this side of her identity. Both of them are having premonitions of a woman's death. Their mother very much wants them to ignore this side of their identity. (This last detail reminds me of The Witches of Bone Hill, and it's interesting to compare each mother's reasons for discouraging her daughters from coming into their full power.) The girls are under a family curse, as well, that means that anyone they love romantically will come to ruin. So, they both have love interests. It might say something about my wiring, but I could resist resist temptation under the circumstances. Not going to lie, while I like romance, I don't consider it mandatory across genres. In this book, there's so much material that I'd like at least one of the three romantic subplots to have been eliminated. But of course, if this is your candy, you're going to think the more of it the better. In that case, the love interests are all interesting, particularly Anita's love interest, who gets the fewest pages, and then Andres, Delphi's guy. I feel like I have unanswered questions about Lela's love interest. While I was entertained, I was never shocked. I find myself wondering how much I was supposed to have figured out, maybe all of it. Still, knowing that the sisters' initial impressions of a couple characters were wrong, took away what could have been a moment to gasp. I minded less that how Cuba and Miami relate to one another was obvious, but I think it was supposed to be -- that we're a step ahead of the sisters, and waiting for them to figure it all out. I think you'll enjoy the story if you love sisterhood, siblinghood, familial bonds, and female friendships. Magic. Real and fictionalized religious and spiritual practices. Cuba and Cuban politics. The author is great at setting a scene, and atmosphere, and so there's some delightful creepiness. And gore. Because Vanessa Montalban can set a mood, I'm interested in seeing where she'll go next.

The Greatest Cartoon Loser of All Time

While most cartoons, especially adult characters are written as hilarious and cool but they’re also badasses, and deep such as...

Stanley Pines from Gravity Falls is a con artist, a cheat and a liar but will do anything to protect his friends and family at all cost. 

Eda Clawthorne from The Owl House is similar to Stan but she’s the most powerful Witch of the Bolis Isle 

Catra Applesauce Meowmeow from She-Ra rise of power of the Horde but later becoming a better person by join the Princess Rebellion 

Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty go on space adventures and acts like he doesn’t care the people he hurt nor their safety but deep down he does

Spinel from Steven Universe abaddoned by Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond but soon was adopted by the Diamonds 

But there’s one character that isn’t a badass nor deep as the ones I mentioned but manage to be the most beloved and the one that I root for and it’s. Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtiz from Phineas and Ferb 

Unlike most characters, he isn’t deep like the rest, a badass and not really villainous, in fact he’s pretty much a loser but that’s what make him such a great character. He’s such a loveable idiot that can’t be taken seriously but just smile and laugh everytime he’s on screen. 

Many schemes that are not in evil traditional sense but him being overly dramatic and most of his inators aren’t even violent such as 

Turn himself into a platypus to be equal terms with Perry the Platypus 

Built an Invisinator so he won’t have to see the Fireside Girls when their selling him tickets or chocolate 

Built an Atomic Leafblowerinator to blow leafs at his neighbors leafs back at him 

He makes great jokes 

But what makes him such a great character is his hilarious and tragic backstory. His parents didn’t show up the day of his birth, threw himself his own birthday parties, his father replaced him with a dog named “Only Son”, raised by ocelots, lost Baloony, his brother overshadowed Heinz, family distowned him and getting a divorce. Despite everything he’s been through, he better himself and doesn’t let his past change who he is. 

Doof and his wife are divorce due wanting different things but still keep in touch and never once mention in one of his tragic backstories 

At first he and Perry were enemies but as time passed, they became more friendly towards each other and even became friends 

But the highlight of his character is his relationship with his daughter, Vanessa. Focus all of his enery to be their for Vanessa, providing support and being their for her. Sets up a suprise birthday party. spent many years to find Mary Mcguffin doll for her even she’s a teenager. Suprvise her camping trip. His daughter talk to him that he isn’t a villain but a good person that just pretending to be evil. He listens to her and needed directions of being a good guy. 

In Milo’s Murphy he tries his best to be a good guy throughout the show. At “Act Your Age”, he truly gave up being evil and sided with good. 

Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz is the greatest cartoon character that’s ever been created. He isn’t emotionally deep, complex, a badass or hilarious like other characters but such a fun character that I can’t help but smile everytime he’s on screen. He tries to be a villain but really, he’s just a good person that’s pretending to be evil who just needs direction.
