Filling The Void
Title: Filling The Void Characters: Annie Thelan & Molly Phillips Time Frame: Third Season Song Lyric: “You find what you’ve been waiting for.” - Go, Be Free from Iron & Wine
“Thank you,” Annie said in an almost shy voice, a stark contrast to her usual disposition.
Molly looked up from the book she had been attempting to read—only managing to reread the same paragraph at least five times—and smiled at the young blonde teenager. Molly patted the couch cushion next to her. Annie followed the silent request and took the offered spot.
“And what exactly are you thanking me for?” Molly asked.
“For taking me in—or rather, letting me stay with you guys for a while.” Annie paused, turning slightly to look directly at Molly. “I know you won’t say anything, but my being here deepens the hole Fi left behind. I’m a constant reminder that, while I’m a teenage girl, I’m not your teenage girl. But in these last couple of weeks, you haven’t let it show. Unlike Jack…” She muttered the last part, though she suspected Molly heard it clearly regardless.
“Annie, I won’t lie—it has been an adjustment… but the most wonderful adjustment. You’ve been nothing but a joy to have here. It feels like you’ve always belonged with us. And you’re wrong, by the way.”
“About what?” Annie asked, her curiosity piqued.
“You being here doesn’t deepen the hole—it fills it. I’m sorry if I’ve inadvertently given you any other impression. And I’ll have a talk with Jack.”
“Please, that’s not necessary. I think he just needs time to adjust in his own way. Plus, I’ve never had a sibling before. Isn’t it normal to have some tension or frustration with each other?”
Molly chuckled and nodded slightly. “To some degree, yes, I suppose. Just make sure he doesn’t take it too far. Annie, you deserve to feel welcome and loved here by everyone.”
“I do, Molly. Trust me, I do. Thank you again. It’s not that I didn’t enjoy the dig sites—sand getting everywhere and being the main dish for so many bugs, God, so many bugs!—but it’s nice to feel normal. Or somewhat normal, even for just a brief moment.”
“You’re welcome.”
Annie leaned over and kissed Molly on the cheek.
“Are you excited about your high school reunion?” Annie asked after a moment.
“Yeah, thrilled,” Molly replied with a hint of sarcasm.
“I don’t know, but I don’t think it’s proper to lie,” Annie teased, giggling.
“I guess I just don’t see the point of going. But a promise is a promise. I said I’d attend when I responded to that email, so I’ll go. Speaking of…” She glanced at her watch. “I should head to bed. Have a wonderful night, Annie. And once more, I’m beyond grateful you’re here.”
“Good night, Molly.” Annie pecked the elder woman on the cheek again before heading upstairs.

Twe prejocts
On my Daily Trek graphic project I have already encountered two on my list in which the characters never appeared on the screen together. I obviously thought they had, or I won't have included them LOL. One they sort did but it was one character talking to the other on video and you can only see the back of the one. Not good enough for me. I need to see the faces of both individuals. The other simply never happened and frankly looking back I am not sure why I thought they had.
Then I had one in which the source I use for my screen caps (I really should acknowledge them in some way...) doesn't have the latest seasons up of two latest/newest series. I mean it has like 98% of what I need and if I get in the randomizer a pairing that only appears in those missing seasons I will (and have) re-add them to the list and hopefully when it comes up again screen caps will be ready.
I haven't missed a day yet. That is a lie. But like only twice (may thrice?) and I do it the very next day. In projects like this I end up with big/stupid gaps. I know it's early and perhaps I shouldn't be congratulating myself; yet I am LOL.
Far as the weekly So Weird fics? Since it's only weekly I have had two in which I had to do and I did them! I did both on the last possible day still I got them done. I just realized or rather remembered I deleted my original post explaining the So Weird project. I felt it was too long and panicked and yeah... here is a summary (hopefully much smoother then my first time explaining it.
52 character duos with one of the following; Pre-Series, First Season, Second Season, Third Season, and Post-Series. The fic has to have the two characters as the central focus and has to take place during the listed time frame.
I made sure the duos and time frames actually existed on the show; for example I won't (and didn't) do Annie Thelan & Carey Bell - First Season because neither character was on the show then. Believe it or not this was the hardest part especially since I wanted to make the number of duos in each time frame even as possible.
The list has been pre-randomized; I did this because some pairings/duos I am more excited to write for then others and I feared if I could pick myself I'd do the "easy" ones first and I wanted to avoid that. And in fact on my document I have the list "blocked" from easily seeing by a black highlander and I only "reveal" one at a time. Because trust me though I swear up and down I won't given the opportunity to replace a "difficult" or one I am struggling with I will.
A little bonus is I am including song lyrics from either Bear's Den, Iron & Wine, or Harry Chapin part of lyric prompt project from eons ago. To be honest and a bit of a confusion thus far on my first two I selected the lyric after I wrote the fic instead of having the lyric inspire the fic before I write it. Ultimately it doesn't matter.
This explanation might have ben more complex. Sorry?

So Weird Seasons 1 & 2 Thoughts
Watching So Weird on Disney Plus made me realize I've never re-watched every single episode in order before. I attempted it a few years ago but only made it as far as Vampire. Even then I think it was in a different order because I definitely didn't watch James Garr. Seeing every episode, including the ones I don't love as much as others, led to new insights I didn't expect. Though maybe I should have expected this – it always happens whenever I revisit So Weird.
The show's main strength is drama, introducing a situation and exploring how the people involved would feel. I don't think I can rightfully call So Weird a comedy. I feel like Disney said So Weird HAD to include comedy so the crew added it here and there. But left to their own devices, the production team and cast excelled at creating raw emotion unheard of on a “kids' show.” Those moments are the real reasons why So Weird developed such a cult following. I really do wonder how it would have fared on TGIF, paired with shows like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Boy Meets World.
Episodes work the best when they combined this emotion with strong, clear-cut story lines. That's when we get classics like Strange Geometry, Twin, Lost, Rebecca, Troll, Nightmare, Singularity, etc. (I include the last one as a personal fave.) The guest actors of the week are also a key factor. When guest actors maybe weren't perfect for their roles, their characters became forgettable at best and cringey at worst. But when the guest actor really sold their part, the story line itself became better because we care more. Actors like Kyla Pratt as “Kamilah,” Nadia Nascimento as “Rebecca” and Mackenzie Gray as “John Kane” brought their characters to life.
So Weird falters when the “phenomenon of the week” isn't as well-defined. After watching all of the first two seasons, I've had the epiphany that this is where the show struggles sometimes, especially the further we get into Season 2. Disney's main demographic loses interest quickly when they can't follow an episode from points A and B to Y and Z. Even as an adult I need more investigative action, or maybe more explanation, in episodes like James Garr, Fathom and Transplant. Then there are those episodes like Avatar and Boo that should have been rewritten before they even filmed.
It's times like these where I wonder if the production crew became a little too indulgent creativity-wise, and lost sight of Disney's ever-important main demographic. Indulgence like this isn't usually a bad thing because it leads to creative, unique content like So Weird in the first place. But in this particular case, some adjustments might have improved certain episodes and created more balance between action and theme.
This might make me sound like a bad fan, but because of that, I almost understand why Disney shook things up at the end of Season 2. Some episodes really weren't too relatable for kids, or had vague story lines that needed more work. But I still don't agree with the extent to which Disney changed the show. They could have kept more things that everybody loved, like the show's heart and depth, which doesn't necessarily equal “dark.”
I've also been thinking that Annie could have been related to Molly or Rick somehow, which would carry over the element of family. Personally I would've loved if Annie was an O'Sianhan with a psychic ability, who joined the group thinking Molly could help her. Then seeing the ongoing conflict when she realizes Molly is in deep denial. This makes way more sense than Molly's “friend” dropping off her daughter so Annie has a “more stable” home life, when Molly was an actual rock star who traveled around on a bus most of the time. Honestly I'm almost convinced that Lisa Thelan chose Molly just to help Annie's music career. I struggle to believe Lisa didn't have ANY other family or close friends who lived in one place year-round.
But I'm getting slightly ahead of myself, as Lightning Rod is next. Yay. I've always been biased against the Annie episodes, but I'm going to try and have an open mind this time. Really, I am!
