Honestly looking at the PJO fandom I realized a thing.

Whenever I see a post talking about/enjoying a non canon ship, there’s usually one person or more saying “Uhmmm, [insert canon ship with character(s)] 🔛🔝” and I get it, sometimes a canon ship is your go-to. It’s canon and usually very sweet and healthy with the PJO series.

But one thing people need to understand is that fandom is about everything about its material, canon AND fanon!

Ship those characters! Make that character AroAce! Make Percy a transgirl or genderfluid! Indulge in a certain rare pair or even a common ship! Not everything has to be completely canon if you write about it/draw it. That’s what fandom is for.

Fandom is for the fans to make things they enjoy and stuff they wish happened in the material, or they don’t even wish it happened in the material and just want to write about it! It’s really just fictional stuff, it isn’t gonna hurt anybody.

But I’m well aware that boundaries are different, what I might consider a harmless ship might be something someone considers erasing a part of a character’s development with their canon partner.

But what I’m getting at is please for the love of Rick Riordan just don’t interact with a thing you don’t like that isn’t harming anyone and is just fun for the person/people doing it, this implies to all fandoms.

I don’t care if it doesn’t make sense since the characters never interacted that much/at all. What’s the point of shipping something if it’s revolving around the same pairing over and over again?

It doesn’t matter if it’s something as bizarre as ShowTime from TADC, or Lillow from TOH, or Percico from PJO, or even the animatronics from Sister Location. It’s 👏 Just 👏 A 👏 Dam 👏 Ship 👏

Even if you were to continuously harass the content creators you see for them, somebody is still gonna do it. No way of preventing it no matter how hard you try. So just let people indulge with their silly little fictional pairing that isn’t canon, and you can move along your merry way with your canon silly little fictional pairing.

TLDR: Let people ship non canon things if it isn’t doing harm, even if said characters are already in a canon relationship. It will happen even if you harass people for it.

honestly silver spoon's and candle's relationship is pretty neat!

the fact that silver is shown the be self centered and narcissistic but the only object he looks up to is candle. the reason being because of her powers, that he desperately wants through out the series to be even better than everyone else, despite already being on such a high horse. and tries to get closer to candle to figure out how to get these powers. shes also the only character that he actually has a somewhat close relationship to, while also possible developing a one sided crush. because he sees her has being slightly higher than him because of these powers, and everyone else he doesnt want to waste time on for so he doesnt even bother with them.

idk lil ramble about their relationship because cmon, thats just so cool that their relationship is like that!

yahiko! for some reason somehow he over took sasuke/itachi but it’s okay cause they’re both revolutionaries. anyways i love him cause he’s one of the very few revolutionaries and his point of view and optimism is very endearing.. he truly believes that the OG akatsuki can change the ninja world and put fighting aside and end needless ninja death and the destruction of smaller countries. his loyalty and belief in nagato and konan is so good i gobble it up every time. also something about the way he haunts konan and nagato to the bone after his death and how they cannot leave him behind is so appealing. the codependencyyyyy 🤌

2. Favourite team

hmm.. if we’re talking in general probably team 8. i think they have really fun abilities that pair together very interestingly and i also rlly like shino. if we’re talking fav team with how they work together then team 10… i feel like they’re the only team that truly works as a team and they’re kinda what everyone wants team 7 every other team to be. inoshikocho are besties and they work together and communicate with each other on what needs to change and what they need from each other really well. they’re kinda winning.

my least fave chara is deidara cause i’m a haterrr (lol i’d say jk but this is just true. he’s incredibly annoying to me and his battles are just plain boring cause he just stands on a bird and monologues. but what really gets me is that he kept coming back. mfer was supposed to die two times and i was so relieved but his annoying ass just kept returning and that’s why instead of just finding him annoying smth inside me switched and genuine hatred came to exist LMFAO. genuinely zero reasonable answers for him to be my least fave unlike if i were to talk about tobirama or kakashi 💀)

what ending? i’m jk. as i said the ending comes completely out of no where and disregards the whole story in favour of being able to have a money grab for a sequel. had it ended at 698 i would have been happy. had sasuke and naruto just both died at 698 i would have been happier.

killer b? i’d like to say tsunade but i don’t particularly think she’d be my style of fighting/jutsu. i’d hate to say jiraiya but i fear he would be my style however i’d dread being around him and i think his ‘leave ya to it’ way of teaching probably wouldn’t work great for me. killer b i think i would be able to get along with and would probably be a good/fair teacher for what i presume my style would be.

27. Fav. friendship

i do love a good yamato and sai friendship. i love team taka. i wouldn’t call it a friendship, but i do enjoy the filler that creates a relationship between itachi and juuzou. i think kushina and mikoto as well are super important and are very meaningful friends due to both their circumstances. yeah, i think it’d have to be that. mikoto and kushina.

What’s your opinion about Carla?

He was sort of a creep in DF but later on, I realized that he got great development and that he’s really cool, from personality to his hobbies and points of view. I believe the Founders have the most interesting past; granted, there are some contradictions, but it's always nice learning more about it!

Furthermore, I like Carla's ability to be a great king. He'd be the best tbh! As far as I recall, he's also good with children, which I find so cute because SAME. Plus, it’s funny how he’s literally so clueless about the Human World to the point of getting lost in the most random places or being fascinated by ordinary stuff, lol.

I agree Jordan Marie and cate are the best most interesting characters if they're going to kill someone it should be Andre like you said he's useless and also unlikable as a person lmfao he ain't doing anything right. I love cate and I love villains so whatever way they go with her as long as it's believable I'm all for it. i genuinely didn’t expect them to pivot on cate’s character bc i really thought they’d stick with cate wanting to be good/wanting to be a hero, trying to earn her friends’ trust back, but i’m SOOO glad that they’re going the villain/anti-hero route. especially with marie and cate now on opposing sides and them basically being each other’s narrative foils, like i need them to go full on villain with cate like it’s just too good a set up for a really complex relationship between marie and cate.

*sighs* okay so my thing with andre is that he COULD’VE been a really interesting character. like, daddy issues, bisexual, doesn’t really care about being a superhero and lowkey in love with his best friend (the writers are cowards for not making the throuple happen) like there were so many ways his character could’ve been done, but then he ended up being a stereotypical nepo baby. it’s kinda like the writers put little to no effort in his character development and didn’t even try to make him likable 😭 he just constantly gets thrown around by the other characters, he slept with his best friend’s girlfriend, and he’s just kind of a dick in general. really the only thing i found really genuine and likable about andre was his love for luke, and to a certain extent, cate. but beyond that, he’s just not a very sympathetic character to me idk 😭

I miss Steve and omega 🥹 WG is nice and all, but it isn't poyt. Wg is more angsty and fuckboy at the moment, but poyt at least had soft moments in between. I love wg to death (how can I not with Ari and Steve as MCs), but the way both men treat reader like a toy just breaks my heart. And, because I'm literally just a girl, I can't handle that. I wouldn't have a problem with Annabeth having those flaws, if it was actually adressed by the narrative and her violent actions, specially towards Percy, were called out by other characters or even by her own conscience after she calms down. Annie could have grown from this insight and have a great, if not the best, character development throughout the series if it was done correctly. This actually upsets me more than makes me angry. I can see how Annabeth could have been great if she was allowed to grown and change her behavior, instead of Rick constantly putting her on a pedestal and not allowing her to change. I feel that sometimes she remains the same 12yrs girl during the new books, but she is almost on her 20yrs and her behavior is cannot be excused anymore by mere age, and I never liked the "trauma" or "they're demigods" excuse either.

First of all, it is not because you have your trauma it gives you an excuse to be mean with people around you. Of course, it is understandable, but not excusable. And if you end up being mean, what can happen, we are all human, you apologize for your behavior. Annabeth never did that, not with Percy and not with Rachel.

And second: "They're demigods so it is fine the way they behaeve" is not a fair excuse either. We never see Percy hitting Annabeth. We never see him calling her names, or pointing out her lack of powers as if she was useless on a fight comparing her to the other demigods. Actually, he always praises her: Her intelligence, her strength, her combat skills.

But Annabeth always says his head is full of kelp, call him stupid and makes him feel stupid, not only that, genuinaly believes he is stupid, which when he gets hiegher grades than her, she is extreamly surprised and in denial about that fact.

She laughing when Reyna said that Percy needed help to get out of a paper bag was really a neon flag, the Judo flip was another.

It seems for me, as a reader, that physicality and verbally degrading your partner is only allowed in Rick's eyes if it comes from a girl, making that kind of behavior acceptable and praised in the narrative. Which is problematic, to say the least.

I have many, many problems with HoO writing, but the decline of Percabeth dynamic was the biggest one in my eyes, and what made me the most upset. After all, I was reading because of them.

Started expecting something like Hiccstrid and ended up disappointed.

I cannot say I totally hate percabeth, it still is part of my childhood after all, and they do have their cute moments, but I can't see them as a golden and perfect couple anymore.

Do you know something that I find really curious?

Is that in Ancient Greek, Greek Mythology, and Hellenic Polytheism, even tho we don't actually have the idea of "sin" there are a few things they and therefore, hellenic polytheistics shouldn't do, but interestingly enough the only thing that is likely, highly not encouraged to do, and mostly unforgiving in Hellenism, is Húbris.

I find it really interesting and curious, because I bet Rick knew about it when he wrote PJO and still decided to give Annabeth, one of his main characters, a fatal flaw that was the closest thing of what could be considered a "sin" in Ancient Greece (the society he was basing his story on).

I'm not saying "whoa, he wanted to make something." My personal opinion is that he just doesn't care, just like he doesn't care to make a better adaptation of the Gods, but I still find it interesting enough to rant about it.

+ it is really concerning see people treating her fatal flaw as something positive and to be cheered on, even in the literal book narrative, when in fact, It is not.

Excessive pride can be a sign of a narcissist behavior, what can lead to dangerous situations or to toxic relationships. And I see Rick playing too much with this edge in Perccabeth dynamics.

(I'm not saying she is narcissist, tho. I believe I have to make this as clear as possible here. There is a difference of having a trace of narcissism, and be diagnosticaded with it.)

Just to finish my thoughts, when I realized Perccabeth lost all the sparkle for me was when I've read one meta about someone who didn't like Annabeth's behavior towards Percy a long time ago. At that time I was an avid Perccabeth shipper, but I basically sat and tought about it, and made a mental exercise: If Percy was a woman, and Annabeth was a man, would their interactions still be considered cute and perfect in a relationship?

That was when I realized, no, it wouldn't be. And that was it for me.

No, I completely get it. I myself was a Percabeth shipper, I think everyone was at one point as most of us read these books at a young age. I am glad that all of us are seeing massive problems with the many canon relationships and other aspects of Riordan's terrible writing.

You give Rick Riordan too much credit. If you have checked out any recent pjo books, you can see how terrible the continuity is and how one dimensional the characters are becoming. So he certainly did not take into account the gravity of Annabeth's fatal flaw, it's repercussions or even it’s connotations in Greek myths.

Annabeth is, as I have said before, a character that always devolves through the lack of change in her attitude and the behavioral inconsistencies. She admits to her fatal flaw and how it endangers her in some instances but then never brings it up again. Doesn't do anything to actively improve on it either.

Her overall attitude remains condescending, judgemental, and heavily hypocritical. And that is putting it mildly.

The fact that she made Percy apologize for getting kidnapped against his will and then having his memory wiped out.

She repeatedly made negative or demeaning comments on his intelligence.

This should be enough of a giveaway in the first place.

Not to mention her horrifying treatment of Rachel and lack of remorse for it. Not a single apology made for it either. Or to Percy for acting as if she owned him.

Furthermore, her consistently violent actions. Now, even if they don't hurt Percy, it's still an extremely unhealthy manner of expressing her emotions.

Her repeated defense of Luke despite him putting Percy in mortal danger and attempting to kill Percy each time. Before anyone quotes they had a bond, they were family, I know, I do but by that time she had seen him do so multiple times and Thalia was family too, she understood right away that Luke was too far gone.

I also dislike the tendency of Rick and, therefore, the fandom to put Annabeth on a pedestal of she can do wrong. I have made multiple posts highlighting how Percy is canonically a better strategist than Annabeth and how Annabeth is certainly not the smartest demigod. Most knowledgeable, perhaps, but not the smartest.

To all the shippers, everyone agrees that the closest we get to absolutely perfect characterization of Percy is in Son of Neptune and Son of Sobek and the short story The Stolen Chariot. And the most obvious common thing between all these is the lack of Annabeth.

I am not saying Annabeth would ruin the book, but she does ruin Percy's character. Rick is so busy hyping her up for no absolute reason that it ends up demeaning Percy irrationally and illogically. And it happens every time.

Even if you blame later book characterizations of Annabeth on Rick Riordan's terrible writing, her early characterization had the same flaws. They are just now overtly apparent in the most recent books.

If the genders were reversed, this would be the paragon of a toxic relationship. I understand that there are excruciatingly few balanced heterosexual relationships that actually do it right and that the extreme nostalgia makes it hard for us to acknowledge any flaws on it but that's no reason to falsely advertise it as the perfect relationship. Not even close.

Not just due to these reasons but also because they have nothing in common nor do their goals align, and it's also a bit of a case of trauma bonding. Again, I have made individual posts on almost all these points

From the philosophical basis to the setting Arcane succeeds at what Fontaine seems to barely attempt, the only thing Fontaine has going on for itself is the Christian narrative and the Metropolis parallels

I don't know enough to make an in depth analysis of tropes or themes from where both Arcane and Fontaine draw from, but I can tell it's characteristic of the western dystopian genre

In Arcane the power structure is a major issue seen through the lens of both the dominating and the subjugated class, which allows the audience to have a clear picture of the conflict, but the characters that introduce the story belong to the underground city, so the point of view that inspires empathy is theirs.

Fontaine didn't need to incorporate the narrative of vertical class division for the overarching plot, it comes and goes in the archon quest without much relevance other than the goal the traveler fulfills by staying in Meropide, which is why it feels frustrating that they introduced the themes of inequality at all. There's no reason to introduce something that's not going to be developed, especially if it remains as an unaddressed element hanging out in the back of the game. It's a bit of a dissonance when you have a character like Neuvillete whose main thing is his compassion for humans act as the highest authority in a region where children live in the sewers.

Arcane does a good job of using a varied cast in the upper city with their own ideals and constraints so that the antagonist class has a nuanced perspective and it can't be reduced to one dimensional evil (of course it's more fun when the conflict has nuance), but Fontaine refuses to give their ruling characters any blame at all for the world building of the region. Children get recruited as soldiers for the Fatui under his nose and Neuvillete only shows contempt for them and their tainted pasts during Arlecchino's story quest.

Our first introduction to Fontaine comes through the Fatui twins, who could offer a more insightful view into the realities of living as the lowest class in the city, but the game also refuses to taint Arlecchino's integrity, so we're treated to fun, games and magic with them.

This vertical class division is one of the oldest elements of the dystopian genre, birthed by the 1927 movie Metropolis, and found in games like Bioshock, it's a staple of the genre yet Fontaine fails it with no reason to even have it on board in the first place. Other than, I don't know, the aesthetics and the gratuitous and pointless reference.

I got tired of complaining already but uhh in large strokes the philosophy behind the narratives of both works (or at least in S2 of Arcane) has to do with antisocialism which is the epitome of western values: the refusal to submit to a collective in order to assert individuality. In Arcane this theme is masterfully developed through Viktor and given a resolution at the end with the power of love (jayvik 🔛🔝) stating that difference is part of someone's individuality. Viktor also laments the singularity of collective consciousness he achieved. All this stands in opposition to eastern philosophy of unity and the values of socialism, there's philosophers like Kierkegaard that go into it, yada yada. Fontaine on the other hand attempts something related to this through the plot of the dissolved victims of murder forming a single entity and the part in the archon quest where Navia's consciousness joins a trial with other dissolved fontainians who demands that she joins the collective. You can see more of this thematic pattern in Clorinde's character stories where she asserts an opposite view to that of people around her, or Chiori's story quest where she describes her struggles to succeed in the industry with unique designs that differed from the established industry. The themes of individuality in the face of an opposing majority are characteristic of western values because that's the narrative built around capitalism. Fontaine didn't do all that bad, they actually did something pretty interesting with Meropide in that sense, but Arcane does their rendition to individuality so masterfully it's not even close.

Individuality is also a staple of sci fi and the singularity of transhumanism, which the plot of Arcane revolves around and it's missing from Fontaine —although not necessary at all, but having the presence of robots and dangerous scientific advancements it would have been fun to dip their toes just a little bit. Although.. I didn't play side quests in Fontaine so I don't know much, but it almost seems like that plot with René putting his friend or whoever into.. uh.. whatever he put him in might pass as transhumanism who knows at this point.
