Heartthrob | Arthur Fleck x reader 💗 CHAPTER 13
Summary: Attempting to conceal her checkered past, a young dancer in Gotham (Y/N) lands a job at Ha-Ha’s and finds herself increasingly drawn to a shy, lonely clown named Arthur Fleck.

Arthur called immediately after you hung up the phone with Tina and Chantelle and asked you to meet him at City Central Station at noon.
“I have to go out to Long Island,” he said, a heavy undercurrent of apology in his voice. “And I wanted to ask if you’d be willing to come with me.”
“Sounds perfect,” you’d replied instantly.
Arthur laughed, surprised. “I, uh…well, I know it’s not very romantic. But it’s kind of an emergency and-”
“I’m there,” you said. “Is everything okay?”
“Yes, yes,” Arthur said. He sounded tense, flustered. You wished you were in the same room with him so you could put his arms around him and calm him down. Comfort him with your body. Among other things.
“Nothing’s wrong,” Arthur assured you. “I’m not hurt or anything. I can explain everything to you on the train. I’m sorry, I-”
“Don’t be sorry, Arthur,” you stopped him. “I’m happy just to spend time with you. No matter what we’re doing.”
You heard Arthur pause, releasing a relieved-sounding sigh on the other end, his tone softening. “I…I couldn't stop thinking about you last night,” he confessed. “I think I even dreamed about you.”
“Really?” you felt an uncontrollable smile spread across your face. Only Arthur Fleck could make you smile like a complete loon.
“Sorry. Is that weird for me to tell you that?”
“No!” you blurted. “In fact, I dreamed about you!”
Arthur laughed. “You did? Last night?”
“Uh…not last night, exactly.” You felt your cheeks heating up and felt glad Arthur couldn't see you blush. “Earlier. Like…maybe after the first time I saw you?”
“That’s sweet, Y/N. Was it a nice dream?”
“It was…very nice.”
If only Arthur knew the true carnal nature of that first dream. You’d get around to telling him someday…hopefully sooner rather than later.
And now, one hour later, here you were: one hour standing on the train platform waiting for him.
You glanced around Gotham City Central Station at all the bustling people - still rushing, still hustling, still rat-racing on a Saturday morning. They were like hamsters on one big gigantic wheel in a cage called Gotham, and although you knew you were one of them, having a day off gave you a refreshed perspective: Exactly who was winning this race? Why did normal people have to work themselves into the ground just to scrape by?
It seemed the winners of this race had already been called a long time ago.
Among the noise, traffic and images vying for your attention all at the same time, you locked eyes with a poster of Thomas Wayne. You shook your head. He was on television all the time these days. People seemed to think Wayne could “fix” Gotham and wanted him to run for mayor.
To put it bluntly: you thought those people were delusional.
There was no denying Gotham was a broken place. But was the wealthy mogul Thomas Wayne really the one to fix it? How could he know what the people of this God-forsaken city needed to get back on their feet? How could someone born and raised with an endless supply of silver spoons in his mouth possibly relate to living on the fringes of society?
The crowd parted and Arthur appeared, holding a newspaper under his arm. He spotted you and smiled. You ran up to him and leapt into his arms. Arthur caught you, spun you, then dipped you over and kissed you. The two of you were living in your own musical fantasy in the middle of a dirty, overcrowded train station.
“I’m so sorry that this is our second date,”Arthur said as he lowered you to the ground. “I wanted to plan something more romantic…a walk in the park, or maybe a trip to the-”
“Arthur,” you stopped him. “Anytime we’re together is romantic. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else in the world right now but here.”
He smiled shyly and gave you a tender kiss on the cheek.
The graze of his lips against you triggered a slew of wants. You wanted to kiss him again. Properly. In fact, you wanted to do a lot of things to him. The memory of the soft pull of Arthur’s lips against yours the night before had stirred within you like a fever since then - but you were worried that if you started, you wouldn't be able to stop. And there were too many people around. You’d have to behave yourself. At least for the time being.
“So where exactly on Long Island are we headed?” you asked. “And what’s this mystery mission you couldn’t tell me about on the phone?”
Arthur drew in a heavy breath. “It’s…look, I don’t want to sound crazy. I’m not sure if I believe it myself, but last night…”
He was interrupted by your train pulling loudly into the station.
“That’s the one we want,” he jerked his head towards it.
“Oh shit!” you exclaimed. “I just remembered, I didn’t buy a ticket!”
“Don’t worry,” Arthur fished into his jacket pocket and pulled out two small pieces of paper. “I got yours.”
After finding two empty seats together, you placed your hand on Arthur’s and listened. Listened as he told you everything: How his mother had been writing letters to Thomas Wayne (funny how you’d just been thinking about him…though to be fair, his smug face was plastered all over the city). How he hadn’t paid his mother’s compulsive letter-writing much mind. She was set in her ways and tended to overfocus on things that were of little to no consequence. And finally: how last night after coming home from your date, an unexpected burst of curiosity had cajoled him into reading one of her letters…
…in which his mother had disclosed something totally unexpected. Something shocking.
“Thomas Wayne?” you repeated, raising your eyebrows.
Arthur nodded.
“Your…father?”
You blinked. This was so out of left field, it had gone past left field and back to right again. You struggled to pick a reaction; there were so many coursing through your mind and heart. You could only imagine how Arthur was feeling.
“How did your mother even know him?” you asked, agog.
“She used to work for the Waynes. As their housekeeper. Just before I was born.”
You shook your head in stunned disbelief. “I have to say, I don’t know what to think. Do you believe her, Arthur?”
Arthur was silent for a moment, and you gave him space to find the words.
“At first I didn't, really. She hasn’t always been…the best at telling the truth. She thinks things are real that aren’t. I wonder sometimes if I get that from her.”
He unfolded the newspaper on his lap and began leafing through the pages.
“But now, when I look at pictures of him - and his pictures are everywhere - I can’t help but see a resemblance. Maybe it’s all in my head, I don’t know.”
Arthur landed on a picture of Wayne and his wife, gazing admiringly up at him as he waved to a crowd. He tore out the photo and creased back the edges so you both could see it more clearly.
“Do you think I look like him, Y/N?” Arthur asked.
“I don’t know…” You scoured the famous man’s face. The curve of his cheekbones, the arch of his eyebrows.
Like a bolt of lightning, it struck you.
“Shit, Arthur. I don’t know if I’m going crazy, but…now I do kind of see a resemblance!”
“I know,” Arthur said. “Now that I see it, I can’t stop seeing it.”
You peered in closer.
“But why wouldn’t she say anything until now?” you leaned back in your seat. “Why wait all these years?”
“She said she signed some papers promising she would keep it a secret. It was to protect me as their child, some big scandal coming out. But she said they loved each other. They just couldn’t be together.”
“Jesus,” you sat back in your seat. Through the window, the entire world seemed to blur as the train lurched away from the city. “What a fucking rollercoaster.”
“I have to go see him,” Arthur’s voice broke into your racing thoughts. “Talk to him face to face.”
“Of course,” you agreed. “Go to his house and confront him. It’s the only way to get to the bottom of this. ”
You’d been to Wayne Manor only once before: a field trip in the second grade at Burnley Elementary School. Over a decade later, all you recalled about the visit were the Waynes’ dobermans that barked at you and your classmates the entire time. Like you were intruders even though the Manor was a historical landmark with paid tours.
The Waynes were a piece of work.
“Come on,” you took Arthur’s hand as you exited the train station. There were no cabs around like in the Gotham, and the walk from the train station to Wayne Manor would take at least half an hour on foot.
Long Island was worlds apart from the city. Away from the endless, screeching roar of Gotham, you could actually hear yourself think.
You and Arthur made your way down the tree-lined roads. It was autumn and the leaves were beginning to turn gold and fall to the ground. You liked how Arthur made a point to always walk on the outside of the sidewalk, creating a buffer between yourself and the street. Maybe his mother was crazy, but there was no denying she had raised a gentleman.
Arthur seemed to relish holding your hand, the sound of dry leaves crunching beneath your feet.
“So what was that dream you had about me?” you asked playfully, giving his hand a light squeeze. You looked over to see his cheeks flush. His shy smile swept you off your feet.
“Oh,” Arthur gave a small laugh. “I dreamed you were onstage with me.”
“Doing your comedy act?” you giggled. “Like a singing, dancing comedic duo?”
“No,” Arthur shook his head. “I mean yes. Kind of. We were singing and dancing together. I was in my red suit and you were…”
He paused. You shot him a quizzical look.
“I was what?” you prodded.
“It’s embarrassing.”
“What was I, naked or something?”
“No,” he shook his head. His face was even cuter (if such a thing was possible) when it was all embarrassed and flushed.
“You were wearing your Snow White costume.”
Not the answer you’d expected. You let out a laugh.
“I guess that makes sense,” you conceded. “Given you’ve seen me in it at the children’s hospital.”
“It’s not just that,” Arthur confessed as you walked along. “It’s because…well, I didn’t tell you this at the time because I thought it would be weird. But Snow White was the first movie I ever saw in the movie theater.”
“That’s not so strange,” you replied. “It’s a classic, after all.”
“Well…she was also my first love. Snow White, I mean. I saw her up there on the screen and I fell in love with her.”
Now you were blushing. And as stupid as it was, you also felt a pang of jealousy course through you. Yes, you were jealous of a cartoon princess Arthur’d been infatuated with as a child. It was beyond ridiculous, but the truth was: hearing Arthur loved anyone besides you made your heart pound with envy. You just hoped he still didn’t have a thing for her.
“You know…” Arthur’s voice broke into your racing thoughts. “I hope this isn't weird of me to say, but…I'm honestly surprised you would ever be interested in someone like me.”
You stopped in your tracks. Was he trying to give you the brush off? Tell you he was still in love with a childhood celluloid dream? Your heart was jumping up and down, side to side. You couldn’t imagine going on without him in your life.
“What makes you say that?” you asked, measured tone and breath, trying specifically not to sound as psycho as you really felt.
Arthur shrugged. “I’m…older than you, I live with my mother. I have no money. And you…”
You wanted to protest everything he was saying, but reminded yourself to wait patiently for him to complete the thought.
“...you’re a college student.”
“I was a college student,” you corrected him.
“You deserve to live in a beautiful place like this,” Arthur said, gesturing at the verdant surroundings. “Someone who can give you that.”
“Are you breaking up with me?” you blurted. You could feel another episode coming on and as much as you trusted Arthur, you really didn’t want to lose it in front of him again. You especially didn’t want to lose it because he was dumping you. And on Long Island, no less. Crazy behavior was normal in Gotham, but here they’d have you arrested for so much as a shriek here.
“No!” he shook his head immediately. “Not at all. I just…don’t want you to feel like I’m keeping you from a better life. You know I have all these problems…”
You breathed a silent sigh of relief. He wasn’t breaking up with you. He was just concerned, thoughtful, putting your needs ahead of his.
It only made your feelings deepen for him even more.
“Does it bother you?” Arthur asked. “That I’m older than you?”
“No,” you replied. “Does it bother you? Have you ever been with someone younger?”
Arthur pulled a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket and shook one loose, bringing it to his mouth as he fished around his other pocket for a lighter.
“I haven’t really dated at all,” he said with an embarrassed wince. “I’m not someone most people would…ever be interested in.”
“That’s not true,” you said, still reeling from the shock that this beautiful, sweet, tender man had never dated. Though to be fair, knowing he’d loved anyone else would have triggered more jealousy. At the same time, you couldn’t wrap your head around how no one could see how amazing he was.
“I’ve never dated, either, Arthur,” you pointed out.
“But that makes sense. You're a lot younger than I am.”
You grinned slightly. “Have you been doing the math? How much?”
Arthur inhaled the first drag of his cigarette, and it billowed out into the clean Long Island air.
“You told me what year you graduated last night. If I’d stayed in school, I would have graduated in 1964. Which means I'm fifteen years older than you. It took me a second to do the math. That was never my strong subject. None of them were.”
You shook your head, then suddenly found yourself laughing. “Actually…”
Arthur looked up at you with big, worried eyes. “Yes?”
“I like that you’re older than me,” you confessed.
“You do?”
“Is that weird?” Now you felt a little embarrassed. You didn’t want Arthur to think you were a freak, but you were just being honest. “I don't like guys my age.”
“You didn't meet anyone you liked at school? I'd think lots of guys would be interested in you.”
“‘Interested’ is a relative term,” you scoffed bitterly. “The guys at Gotham U are…let's just say a lot of them are book smart. And come from rich families. But they act like fucking animals.”
Arthur frowned. “Animals? How do you mean?”
You shook your head. “I'll tell you about it some other time.”
Arthur nodded respectfully.
“The truth is, Arthur,” you continued. “I never liked anybody that way…until I met you.”
Arthur smiled at the ground as you plodded along in sync, then silently took your hand.
“I feel the same way about you,” he said. “When we’re together, it just…feels right.”
“I know,” you said, giving his hand a squeeze. “So many things in my life haven’t felt right…haven't been right. But this does. And if it feels right, nothing else matters.”

I wanted to have my Casualty thoughts up by Sunday, so I'll type them out now! I think this has taken me long enough, haha.
So, I thought that overall, last week's ep was pretty good. Obviously, I felt Faith dragged it down, but I always feel she drags an ep down, so yeah. I also felt there wasn't enough Jacob but, again, I think I say that any week he's not the focus, lol. I love him a lot, okay?
I also thought the episode was a lot better than I'd assumed it would be, though I hope the show slows down on putting Jodie in traumatic situations after this - I feel like they've already put her through a lot without touching on how it's impacted her. It would be interesting to get some storylines about that now, instead of having even more things happen.
Regardless, the Max and Jodie stuff was very good! Anna Chell was as brilliant as ever, and I think this is Nigel Harman's best performance as Max yet. Not that he hasn't been great in other eps/storylines, but I thought he was particularly fantastic in this one. Max's worry and fear for Jodie felt so believeable, and it was wonderful seeing him be so caring for her - hopefully this can lead to them becoming closer and her realising that he does care, even if he might not be the best at showing it. The moment with her seeing him at his bedside was lovely.
Also, it seems we're getting more hints at Max having a mysterious past. I'm still very interested by that and I can't wait to see what comes of it, and how Jodie will react.
Cam standing up to Ryan was great, and I was cheering for him - at least until he brought up Ryan's fling with Jodie... I do like Cam, and I can totally get why he'd be upset and frustrated about Ryan and Jodie having a thing, given that he's considered Ryan a friend and he's in love with Jodie. But at the same time: it takes two to tango, Cam, and Jodie made that decision as much as Ryan did, she can do what she wants. I felt it was a bit possessive of Cam to talk about her in that way. Again, it makes me think of how Arthur was with Chantelle on Holby, and particularly how he told Chantelle she must have subconscious feelings for him because she kissed him once (or something like that, I don't remember the line atm).
But Arthur grew from that and moved on as a character, and I think/hope Cam will too. So this isn't a criticism of the ep or even of Cam as a character, only of Cam as a person.
I hate Faith Cadogan as much as ever, and a breakup for her and Iain can't come soon enough for me. The way she was manipulating him was so upsetting to me. I can't stand her. I don't want to say and won't say any more about this, I'm trying not to think about her too much.
Jaye Jacobs' acting when Donna got the phone call was great. She conveyed how scared Donna was for the safety of her coworkers so well. Jaye Jacobs is such a good actress in general, I can't wait for Donna to get a big storyline eventually.
Also, speaking of Donna, Dylan's reaction to how they wouldn't be driving to work together anymore was so cute. Their friendship is perfection.
I would've liked more patient storylines in the ep. I was also confused by how the patient storyline with Iain was handled - it was such a serious topic, but I felt like it was forgotten about after the first half. :/ I suppose at least Jacob got some screentime out of it. And oh well, next week we get an ep that seems to be almost entirely focused on patients, so I'm excited for that!
Paige and Sah kissed! I wonder where this will lead. I'm assuming it will turn into a love triangle with Teddy, Paige, and Sah, but I think it would be awesome for it to become a polyamory storyline. I don't want to get my hopes up too high though, because there have been other times I've hoped for/seen potential for a polyam relationship in the Holbyverse and felt sad when it didn't happen. (Ethan/Matthew/Fenisha comes to mind. I thought that was going to be a polyam storyline, but it wasn't.)
And now, like, everyone knows that Max is Jodie's father! I'm glad they had that happen in this ep, because I think if it had carried on longer it would've felt too long. I'm very excited to see how Jodie and Max cope with other people knowing, that could be very interesting.
Next week, we get the NHS anniversary ep! That looks great. And we'll get to see Eli from Holby again!! I'm so happy about that, I love Eli.

chantelle lane really is such a precious cinnamon roll and deserves better than to be cheated on by a slime ball called rhys right her under nose but then there was arthur confessing his undying love for her who thought the sun shined out of her and to be honest i think she thought to herself that arthur was too good to for her or something idk just got that feeling bc he would’ve done anything for her and i suppose chantelle felt some way towards him more than a friendship but she just kind of ignored those feelings and that breaks my heart because she then goes back to the slime ball rhys who cheated on her arthur and chantelle was made for one another.

Arthur's Note (see what I did there?): Thanks every so so much for the kind words and encouragement. I didn't realize the new trailer was coming out today but I started writing this fic again about a week ago and I think I'm on a roll! I <3 Arthur Fleck so much and hope you enjoy!
Arthur had insisted on walking you home, had kissed you again at the front door of your apartment building and promised to call you the next morning; you both had the next day off and planned to see each other.
When he pressed his body into you. You could feel he was hard, but restraining himself. Arthur was nothing if not a gentleman. It only made you love him more.
“I'll call you in the morning,” he hummed into your ear.
“First thing in the morning,” you corrected him with a sly grin.
Arthur smiled, blushing. “First thing in the morning.”
You hated to pull yourself away from him. It was crazy: You'd never cared that much about sex, but for the first time in your life, you understood what it felt like to want to ask someone upstairs, what it felt like to actually want someone to spend the night in your bed. But of course, you had your parents to think about and they'd never go for it in a million years.
Arthur watched you get into the elevator. When the doors closed, you felt like you might cry. Reminding yourself you were gonna see him again in twelve hours was the only thing that put your longing heart at ease.

It was almost midnight, and your parents usually went to bed around ten, so you were surprised to find them both sitting up on the sofa in the living room, watching what had to be the last half hour of The Murray Franklin Show. They never watched Murray. They never even stayed up this late.
“What’s going on?” you asked as you locked the front door and hung your coat up.
“We’ve been worried sick!” your mother cried as your dad muted the television.
Oh boy. This was already off to a great start.
“Why?” you asked, cocking your head to one side. “I mean, I know it’s almost midnight, but-”
“There’s been another killing on the subways,” she continued. “They think it’s related to what happened to those three Wayne boys a few days ago.”
“You’re kidding,” you sat down on the sofa to face them. “Who’d they kill?”
“A man,” your father answered. “But they don’t know anything else yet. You were out all night and didn’t hear anything about this?”
You shook your head. “No. But it’s getting crazier out there.”
“What exactly did you do tonight?” your father raised an eyebrow.
“Met up with friends,” you answered breezily. Technically you weren’t lying. Arthur was a friend. Sort of.
“That’s interesting,” he continued, a hint of sarcasm in his voice. “Because those so-called girlfriends of yours called here looking for you. Two different times in fact.”
“They did?”
You gulped, trying to scan your mother's face for some kind of hint to help you navigate the choppy waters of your father’s suspicions. But her “worried sick” face had morphed into her “I’m just gonna stay out of it and keep the peace” face.
Typically a bad sign.
“First Tina and then that other girl…” your father said. “The one with the silly name…”
He looked to your mother who shrugged in response.
“Chantelle,” he finally remembered. And Chantelle said she was calling to find out how your ‘hot date’ went tonight.”
Damn that Chantelle. You knew she had a champagne-and-dial addiction - it was why she was still hooking up with at least five of her ex-boyfriends - but you could still murder her ten times with a hatchet. She had no idea how crazy your dad was.
“I told your father it must have been some kind of practical joke,” your mother finally interjected. “You know, those telephone pranks kids these days like to play on one another?”
You could see she was trying to help you out. And for one crazy second, you considered telling them the truth:
Mom, Dad…I’m in love with a beautiful clown.
No, that wouldn’t go over well at all. They’d hit the roof. In fact, they'd go through the roof.
The less you said about Arthur the better. At least for the time being.
“I did go out with friends,” you explained in as even a tone as you could muster. “I don’t know what Chantelle’s talking about.”
“Which friends?” your mother asked.
“Just some friends…from…from…” you struggled to complete the sentence. You never went anywhere besides work these days, so where the hell would you meet any other friends?
“Some friends from GU?” your mother asked hopefully.
It was perfect. You could have kissed her right then and there. Saved by the mama.
“Yes!” you nodded. “Yes, some friends from college.”
“Honey, that's wonderful!” your mother smiled.
Your father nodded approvingly. “Those are the kinds of people you should be spending time with. People who are serious about their future…as opposed to a couple of strippers.”
“They’re not strippers, Dad!”
He smiled at his own dumb joke and you pursed your lips. Your father never approved of anyone if he didn’t deem them “serious about their future.” The problem was, most of the kids you’d met at Gotham University were entitled assholes from rich families who didn’t actually care about their futures: no matter how badly they fucked up, their privileged parents could afford to yank them out of hot water and they knew it. Your dad had it all wrong. But you didn’t have the heart to correct him.
“How come you look so disheveled?” your father’s voice broke into your thoughts once more.
You blinked. “Excuse me?”
He pointed at your rumpled clothes.
“Your outfit’s wrinkled, your hair’s a mess. And your makeup…”
“Did something happen tonight, honey?” your mother asked. You could sense the growing concern in both their voices, and it brought you right back to when you’d started having problems at GU. Your poor parents had to watch as their star student daughter - who’d never given them a lick of trouble - suddenly turned into someone they didn’t recognize. Someone they were afraid of.
“Sweetheart,” your mother prodded gently. “You didn’t happen to get into a…a fight or an altercation with anyone tonight, did you?”
You shook your head and laughed, trying your best to put them at ease. “Not that I can remember.”
It was a true enough answer. More true than they needed to know, anyway.
“You can tell us if you’re…struggling,” your father added. “We want to know if something’s going on.”
You shook your head again. “What happened was, the subway was totally jam packed. Maybe it had to do with the killing tonight, I dunno. Anyway, we were stuffed like sardines. I got all pushed around on the train. You know how the people in this city can be.”
“Fucking animals,” he muttered under his breath. You glanced up at the TV where a still-muted Murray seemed to be delivering his closing words. “You’re alright though, aren’t you?”
“Of course,” you assured them both. “Nothing a shower and some shampoo can’t fix.”
You breathed a concealed sigh of relief as you watched your parents breathe one of their own.
You popped up from the sofa and stretched.
“Gonna get ready for bed,” you announced. “See you in the morning.”
“Goodnight, sweetie,” your mom called out. “We love you.”
“Love you, too.”
You turned to go to your room and heard your dad unmute the TV, Murray Franklin’s voice ringing out over the orchestra as an organ struck up the groovy chords from his signature closing song:
“Goodnight, and always remember: That’s life!”
You laughed softly to yourself. “That’s life!” you whispered as you dance-glided down the hall and into your bedroom, shutting the door behind you.
Life really was something, wasn’t it? Especially life in Gotham, a life like yours: one that now had a beautiful man named Arthur Fleck in it.
After the crazy night you’d had, the shower felt like a balm to your soul. You crawled under the cool covers of your bed, still giddy from your date with Arthur and the promise of seeing him tomorrow. As you drifted off to dreamland, you thought about even though your parents drove you up the wall, you loved them and would do anything for them. You hated the toll your problems at GU had had on them - how scared and defenseless they’d been, not knowing how to help you when the shit hit the fan. They didn’t have the resources and privileges of your ex-classmates’ parents, but they’d stood behind you when no one else had. You’d never forget that.
After the nightmare at Gotham U - after everything it’d put you and the people you loved through - you’d vowed to yourself that you’d never be powerless again.
Although you felt powerless to stop the freight train of emotions you felt for Arthur, you decided he was a worthy exception. Arthur also knew what powerlessness felt like. He wasn't like the rest of them. He was the salt of the earth, just like your parents. Just like you.
And as long as you and Arthur had each other’s backs, you told yourself as sleep enveloped your being, nothing could ever take either of your power away again.
Together, you were unstoppable.

The phone rang first thing in the morning, just as Arthur promised. Thank GOD your bedroom had its own phone line.
“Hey you!” you answered playfully on the first ring.
“There you are. We’ve been calling you, bitch!”
“Chantelle?” you paused, your breath hitching.
“And Tina’s here,” Chantelle said. “We’re at Ha-Ha’s. You didn’t call either of us back last night so we decided to ambush you first thing in the morning.”
“Oh yeah,” you shook your head. “And by the way, thanks a lot for telling my dad about my ‘hot date’ last night. He was real happy to confront me about that when I got home.”
“So you did come home last night!” Chantelle gasped.
“I told you a million times!” Tina’s annoyed voice rang out in the background. “She wasn’t gonna have sex with him on the first date.”
“So how was it?” Chantelle asked. “Tell us everything!”
“It was…great,” you answered. “He’s…wonderful.”
Chantelle squealed. “Y/N’s going out with a college boy!” She sang.
“Let’s not blow this out of proportion,” Tina countered. “College boys are a dime a dozen. And most of ‘em wouldn’t know how to please a woman even if they majored in it. Gimme the phone, Chantelle.”
You heard the receiver scuffle on their end and Tina’s no-nonsense voice rang in your ear.
“How was the outfit, hair and makeup?” she demanded. “Any mishaps?”
You paused. It would take too long to explain the whole blacking out thing to them, you reasoned. And you didn’t want them to worry.
“Everything went fine,” you said. “You guys did a great job. I can’t thank you enough.”
“I have some very exciting ideas for the next date outfit,” Tina said. “When are you getting here? I’ll fill you in. We’ll try on some samples.”
“I’m off today!” you sang into the phone. “And I’m actually seeing him again this afternoon.”
“What? You slut!”
Chantelle grabbed the phone back. “You’re seeing him again? So soon? Oh my goodness, Y/N, I feel like you’re gonna marry this guy.”
You heard Tina groan in disgust behind Chantelle before snatching the phone back again.
“Then my outfit ideas will have to wait for your third date,” Tina said. “Assuming there is one. What were you planning on wearing today?”
“I dunno,” you glanced around your messy room helplessly. “I haven’t even thought about it.”
“Okay, listen to me, Y/N. You’re an autumn. That means warm skin tones. Understand?”
“Warm skin tones,” you repeated back, even though you had no idea what the hell she was talking about.
“I’m talking greens, I’m talking yellows…come to think of it: do you have anything in peach?”
You shook your head. “I don’t think so.”
“Black is fine. Accessorize with those gold hoop earrings. A full face of makeup just like we showed you. But go easy on the blusher, for the love of God.”
“Thanks, Tina.” You laughed.
“Shit. Hoyt’s coming,” Tina warned. “Call us immediately after today’s date ends. We need a detailed play by play so we can mastermind the plan for date number three.”
“I thought you said these college boys were a dime a dozen,” you countered.
“Mastermind your outfit for date number three,” Tina corrected herself. “If you’re gonna date a college douche, the least you can walk away with is a killer wardrobe.”

I’m about to watch S15E43 “Digby Dog”. From the title, it sounds like an Arthur-centric episode, so that should be good.
Edit 1: Henrik’s laptop key word being “Fredrik”. :’)
Edit 2: Lmao, Sharon is using Serena’s parking spot!! Good for her.
Edit 3: Serena’s not the slightest bit pleased to see Edward. Understandable, lol.
Edit 4: Chantelle 💖
Edit 5: “I just feel that HR is women’s work. ...That was me joking.” It says a lot of not-great things about you that you had to explain that that was a joke, Henrik... it would be understandable for people to think you meant it, some of the ways you behave!
Edit 6: It was very jarring hearing Elliot swear just then! (Sharon bumped into his dog with her car. The dog seems mostly alright but Elliot’s understandably upset... and Sharon hasn’t told him it was her car, so that’s going to make things awkward.)

Edit 21: Arthur telling Chantelle she must subconsciously have feelings for him because she kissed him... what the fuck?!
Edit 22: I really liked that episode. Arthur is being extremely unlikeable but I get the feeling he’s supposed to be (much as with Henrik in this era when he behaved similarly), the Elliot storyline was really emotional but really good, the patient storyline with the amnesiac man was great, and Serena reached such Gaslight Gatekeep Girlboss levels that it was incredibly entertaining.

Summary: Attempting to conceal her checkered past, a young dancer in Gotham (Y/N) lands a job at Ha-Ha’s and finds herself increasingly drawn to a shy, lonely clown named Arthur Fleck.
Warnings: This chapter contains mugging, memory loss, traumatic brain injury. This fic as a whole contains sex, language, violence, mental illness.

Author’s Note: I’m back! Obviously, it took me sooo long to figure out how to write this next chapter, but I finally got it together. I really appreciate your patience in the meantime & hope you enjoy reading it. The plan is to post more regularly soon (Chapter 11 is almost done).
“Makeup is an art,” Chantelle and Tina had explained to you the night before. “Think of your face as a canvas.”
Despite all their well-intentioned beauty coaching, the cold, hard truth was you still had no idea what the hell you were doing - you couldn’t even keep the differences between moisturizer, foundation and concealer straight in your brain. And after twenty minutes of attempting to “paint” your face like the natural-born Rembrandt they were convinced you were, you’d stared back at your reflection in the mirror and decided you looked like a clown…and not in a sexy-Arthur-Fleck kinda way.
Exasperated, you’d washed everything off, opting instead for a tiny bit of mascara, lip gloss and powder.
But then there was the issue of your hair. You’d burned your fingers on Tina’s flat iron before managing to get things somewhat under control. But as soon as you stepped out onto the street the rain began to fall, causing your already-unruly mane to frizz up completely by the time you reached the subway.
Chantelle’s handpicked outfit, however, remained the only unblemished element of tonight's ensemble: her tight-fitting angora sweater did things for your non-existent cleavage you’d never imagined possible. You’d be sure to thank her profusely later…even though she thought you were going out with someone else tonight.
You’d never cared how you looked in front of a guy before…but Arthur Fleck wasn’t just a guy. To say he’d gotten under your skin was, perhaps, the understatement of your life: you were becoming crazy about the man.
You didn't know how you were going to survive this date. You could barely hold it together in Arthur’s presence without wanting to reach out and smother him with affection, and the kiss between you earlier today had only solidified your deepest desires. You wanted Arthur in so many ways…ways you didn’t even understand yet. It reminded you of the first time you’d ever rode the Giant Dipper at Amusement Mile: the sensation of your stomach flying up into your throat as you went over that first terrifying drop…a disconcerting mix of fear and exhilaration. Was this what being in love felt like?

The bouncer at Pogo’s frowned as you handed him your ID.
“Are you…um…are you alright, miss?” he asked, concern in his eyes.
You were thrown off by the question. “Of course. Why?”
“Don’t take this the wrong way, but…have you looked in a mirror recently?”
You shook your head. The jerk was actually making fun of how bad your hair and makeup had turned out. People in this city really didn’t know how to act.
“Wow, you’re hilarious,” you rolled your eyes at him, snatching back your ID. “Can I please go inside now? My friend’s about to go on.”
You pushed past the rude bouncer and entered the club, scanning the room feverishly for an empty seat. Spotting one parallel to the center of the stage, your eyes lit up and you rushed over to claim it. As you sat down, a strange chill ran up your spine as you slowly began to realize: everyone was staring at you. Faces of concern and mockery swam around you, and you weren’t sure why.
Oh shit, you thought. Do I have something on my face?
Unfortunately, you hadn’t brought a compact mirror (Tina and Chantelle had given you a five minute lecture on the importance of always carrying on in your purse), so you couldn’t check. And you couldn’t get up to go to the bathroom because then you’d lose your seat. You shifted uncomfortably in your chair, then glanced at your watch and saw the glass was cracked.
Weird. You hadn’t remembered smashing it against anything on the way over.
Your concerns about your appearance, however, were quickly dissolved as the current act wrapped and the emcee took the mic.
“This next comic describes himself as a lifelong Gotham resident who from a young age was told that ‘his purpose in life was to bring laughter and joy into this cold, dark world.’ Umm. Okay? Please help me welcome Arthur Fleck!”
You applauded along with the rest of the half-faded crowd as relief washed over you. Thank God you hadn’t missed him. As Arthur took the stage, your heart began to throb again. There were simply simply no words to describe how incredible he looked tonight. His red vest. The crisp, white button-down shirt underneath it. The matching slacks.
And his hair. His hair.
You were certain his hair was going to be the death of you. How was it possible that you and that gorgeous hair inhabited the same planet without the entire world imploding?
Arthur squinted out at the crowd before speaking. You knew he was searching for you, needing to see you in the audience, needing to know you were there for him. And you were. When the two of you locked eyes, he smiled. You smiled back at him and everything else fell away. It was you and Arthur again. And nothing else in this cold, dark world mattered.
You didn’t care that Arthur had a laughing episode at the beginning of his act. You didn’t care that basically all his jokes fell flat, either. You didn’t care about any of that. All you cared about was how proud you were of him. So proud, you felt like you could burst into a million pieces.
When he finished his set, you leapt to your feet, clapping and screaming. Arthur blushed from the stage, embarrassed…and pleased. Everyone was staring at you, then back at Arthur, then back at you in dazed confusion. Two weirdo peas in a pod…and proud.
“We’re gonna take a short break,” the emcee announced.
A moment later, you and Arthur found each other at the back of the club.
“You were amazing, Arthur!” you exclaimed as you threw your arms around him.
“I'm so glad you came tonight…” he hummed into your ear. Of course, your depraved mind twisted the meaning of those two words in your head, and you found yourself having to stifle a blushing smile. You felt your body quaver with excitement at being next to him once again.
“Wait a minute…” Arthur pulled back to look at you, shock and concern flooding his face.
“Y/N, what…what happened to you?”
You blinked. “What? Nothing happened to me.”
“You’re…you’re hurt.” Arthur looked you up and down, then lifted your hands to eye-level. Bruises in the shape of what looked like fingers and fingertips lined the insides of your wrists. You frowned at the sight, utterly confused.
“Y/N, who…who did this to you?”
“I’m fine!” you insisted. “I mean…I have a slight headache, but, y’know, it’s probably just the rain.”
“Y/N, look at me. Tell me what happened. Can you remember?”
It took a minute for your brain to register Arthur’s question, which you realized was a little strange.
“Well,” you inhaled, trying hard to formulate your thoughts. “I got on the subway…I know that. And I took it all the way to…well, whatever this stop was near here, you know? And then I got off the train and went up the stairs…and then…” you looked up into Arthur’s beautiful eyes. “And then I was here. Watching you perform for the very first time. And I’m so proud of you, Arthur!” you squealed as if you’d seen him for the first time tonight all over again.
“You don’t remember anything else? You must have hit your head.”
“I'm fine!”
“Y/N,” Arthur’s worried eyes blinked at you. “I don’t think you are. I think I need to take you to the hospital.”
“But it’s our big date!” you wailed. “I got all dressed up and everything!”
At that moment, a few Wall Street bro types brushed past and snickered at Arthur.
“Nice set, freak. In case you didn’t get the memo: you’re supposed to tell the jokes and the audience is supposed to laugh…not the other way around.”
"He has a laughing condition, you assholes!" you snarled at them without hesitation.
To everyone’s surprise, the bros paused, thrown off by the fact you’d called them out.
“Sorry…” Arthur interjected, glancing at the dudes apologetically. “She’s…she’s not feeling well.”
Arthur shot you a desperate please-shut-your-mouth-before-you-get-us-both-killed look, but you could see there was a tiny, triumphant smile curling up his lips underneath it. Still, the words were flying out of your mouth and there wasn’t much you could do to stop them.
“Yeah, I’m not feeling well,” you continued loudly, glowering at them. “Maybe if assholes would shut their fat faces and stop acting ignorant, I’d feel better.”
“Okay, you’re coming with me now!” Arthur wrapped his arm around your shoulders and scooted you towards the door. You looked over your shoulder to see them staring after you, dumbfounded. The sight of it made you laugh.
“Y/N,” Arthur pulled you into him as soon as you were outside. “I’m taking you to Gotham Hospital. We’ve gotta get you checked out.”
“No, Arthur!” you protested. You didn’t exactly know why you were so opposed to the idea, but your first instinct was to protest.
“Y/N, please. Please? Just do it for me. Just so I know you’re okay.”
“I’m worried about you,” he emphasized.
“I’m fine!”
“Okay.”
You’d switched it up so quickly, Arthur blinked in disbelief. He cleared his throat, nodding.
“Uh…okay. Good. Let’s go.”

“This is not where I expected to end up tonight,” you lamented. Arthur sat next to you, a clipboard given to him by the nurse at the front desk in his lap. He was trying to fill out your paperwork for you.
“Um. Your last name is…L/N right?”
“Yeah” You smiled at him. “How’d you know?”
Arthur blushed. “I…might have looked at your timecard. I was…curious about you. This was before…you know…we became...closer.”
“That’s so sweet! I looked at your timecard, too!”
Arthur stifled a laugh. “What’s your date of birth?”
He patiently wrote in all the answers and brought the completed forms back up to the desk.
“I’m surprised there aren’t more people here,” you observed, looking around at the handful of other patients. “It is a Friday night, after all.”
“It’s only ten o’clock,” Arthur reasoned. “My guess is things get crazier out there in a couple hours or so.”
“I feel like things are flying out of my mouth tonight without any filter,” you blurted. “And I’m not even that angry.”
“I feel like they are, too,” Arthur agreed. “But, that’s okay. I’m glad you agreed to come here. I’m…I’m still worried about you.”
You narrowed your eyes at him, leaning in. “Can I ask you a personal question?”
Arthur looked a little startled, but he nodded.
“How do you get your hair to look so good all the time?”
Arthur’s eyebrows arched and he laughed.
“I'm serious!”
“No…I'm sorry,” he demurred, looking down at the tile floor. “It's just that nobody’s ever said that to me before.”
“Nobody ever said your hair looks incredible?” you asked. “Like it's the most gorgeous hair in the world? Nobody ever approached you to do shampoo commercials?”
“Maybe that's my true calling,” he joked.
“What shampoo do you use?”
"That's a personal question," Arthur teased as the door to the back of the ER swung open.
“L/N? F/N L/N?” the nurse called out.
You leapt to your feet. “Oh! That’s me.”
“Do you want me to wait here?” Arthur asked.
“Are you kidding?” You extended your hand and pulled him up. “Of course I want you to come. You’re my emotional support clown.”

After weighing you, taking your blood pressure, asking if you had any allergies to any medications and all the other boring details that entailed a medical visit, the nurse set you up in an examination room and read through your paperwork, pursing her lips as she centered in on the handwritten scrawl (Arthur’s handwriting of course) that explained why you’d come to the ER in the first place.
“It says here you…think you hit your head?”
“He thinks I hit my head,” you clarified, jerking said head towards Arthur. “I’m still not sure. There’s a big gap in my memory from tonight and I don’t know why.”
“There are bruises on her arms,” Arthur added. “She came to meet me and she looked…disheveled. Like someone had…”
He paused. The nurse looked you up and down.
“You don’t remember what happened to cause the bruises?”
You shrugged. “I can be clumsy sometimes.”
“You’re not…that clumsy,” Arthur murmured under his breath. “I mean,” he looked up at the nurse. “She’s a dancer. She’s…one of the most graceful people I’ve ever seen.”
“Arthur, that is so sweet!” you exclaimed.
The nurse shot you both a skeptical look, then smiled. “Your husband obviously cares for you a great deal.”
“Oh,” Arthur blushed. “I’m…not her-”
“Yes, he’s a wonderful husband!” you interjected, flashing him a slightly maniacal smile. “So protective of me. I couldn’t ask for a better one.”
“It sounds like you might have taken a fall,” the nurse continued, jotting down a few notes on your chart. “But the bruises on your wrists do look like they were caused by someone else’s hands.”
“My watch is broken, too,” you blurted.
“I’m wondering if maybe you were mugged. It happens to women in Gotham all the time, unfortunately.”
“But I still have all my money,” you pointed out, opening up your purse to show off your untouched wallet.
“Maybe you fought them off,” Arthur suggested. It wasn’t a completely outlandish notion. You were known to bring out the feistiness if the wrong people pushed your buttons.
“In any case, we’ll run some tests to check for concussion and other injuries.”
The nurse opened a drawer and handed you a light blue paper robe. “You can put this on. I’ll inform the doctor and he’ll check you over.”
“Thank you,” Arthur said.
“Of course. He should be by in just a minute.”
“What a nice lady,” you said to Arthur after she left you alone. “Don’t always meet people like that around here.”
“Very nice,” Arthur agreed. He cleared his throat. “Um…do you want me to leave, or…turn around while you get changed?”
You blinked, the reality of everything that had happened tonight finally hitting you.
“I just can’t believe this is how tonight turned out.”
“What do you mean?” Arthur asked softly.
“I had a whole outfit planned, Arthur! And my hair and makeup. I wanted to impress you and look beautiful for you tonight.”
“Y/N…” Arthur stood up to face you. “You are beautiful. No matter what. All I care about is that you’re okay.”
You sighed, moved by his sweet words, but you still felt utterly crestfallen and defeated. “I ruined our first date. And your big stand-up debut. I wanted tonight to be perfect so bad…”
“You didn’t ruin it,” Arthur interrupted. “I…” he paused. “Of course I wish none of this had happened to you. This city is…awful. In so many ways.” He paused, taking your hand into his. “But…I just love being with you. It doesn’t matter what we’re doing, as long as we’re together.”
You wanted to kiss him again, but suddenly the door flew open and a man in a white coat suddenly stood before you both.
“I hear somebody got banged up tonight.”
“My guess is you got mugged. Maybe the muggers chickened out before they could actually…you know…mug you. It does look like you’ve got a concussion.”

Dr. White’s bedside manner was on the complete other end of the spectrum of your nice nurse’s from a few minutes before, but you’d come to expect that from men with MDs. After performing the perfunctory tests of shining a light in your eyes, examining your body for additional trauma or bruising (none was found) and asking you a few routine questions, he announced his evaluation:
“What can you do for that?”Arthur asked, concerned.
The doctor snorted at what he obviously deemed a dumb question. “Not much. Just wait it out. Don’t go to sleep for a while.”
“What happens if I fall asleep?” you asked.
“You could die.”
“Oh.”
“Your brain’ll heal itself,” the doctor continued. “Might take a little time. Just try to take it easy and don’t be in places where this could happen to you again.”
“You mean the entire city?” you asked, raising an annoyed eyebrow at him. You knew what he meant, but the slight insinuation that getting mugged was somehow your fault didn’t sit great with you.
“What can I say?” Dr. White shook his head and shrugged. “Welcome to Gotham.”
“I’ve lived here all my life,” you informed him dryly. “Gotham’s a jungle.”
“Then welcome to the jungle.”

“Are you hungry?” Arthur asked in the lobby of the hospital. It was past midnight. “There’s a diner down the street people seem to like.” He paused. “That is…if it’s not too late for you.”
The way you saw it, you’d stay up all night with Arthur if he’d have you.
“Let’s go to the diner. I could really go for a cheeseburger."
Arthur laughed. “Okay.”
The rain had stopped and the air outside felt crisp and freshly-washed. For a brief moment, it made you forget that the garbage strike in Gotham had just entered its seventh week.
You and Arthur moved through the crowded sidewalk together, stumbling through the endless obstacles of people and garbage. A startling headline caught your eye as you walked past a newsstand, and you stopped in your tracks to read it:
KILLER CLOWN ON THE LOOSE. LATEST NEWS ON THE MURDERS, PAGE TWO.
Beneath was a drawing of a vampiric clown.
“Can you believe that?” you asked.
Arthur paused alongside you, his eyes wide as he soaked in the headline.
“I watched this on the news last night."
Arthur nodded, pulling out and lighting a cigarette. “They worked at Wayne Enterprises. All three of them.”
You rolled your eyes. “That figures.”
Arthur cocked his head to one side. “What do you mean?”
You continued, lowering your voice. “Between you and me, I actually knew one of them. Back when I was still at college. He was a complete asshole, and that’s putting it nicely.” You sighed. “And if I had to guess, those ‘friends’ of his were cut from the exact same cloth. But it looks like he finally picked the wrong person to fuck with. And I can’t say I’m shedding any tears.”
Arthur nodded slowly, taking in your words.
“I’m sorry,” you stopped yourself. “You must think I’m crazy for talking like this.”
“No,” he shook his head. “I don’t think you’re crazy at all.”
“Three less pricks in Gotham City,” you quipped. “Only a million more to go!”
Arthur threw back his head and laughed. You took it as a good sign: despite the traumatic brain injury and the chaotic night you’d shared, his smile still made you go weak at the knees.

Right, it’s time for “Never Let Me Go”. This is one of my most beloved Holby episodes, and happens to feature my absolute favourite Henrik scene ever. <3
Edit 1: I do love the Mo and Sacha friendship.
Edit 2: Henrik nearly causing a Car Park Incident 😂
Edit 3: I can’t believe that the last time I watched this episode, I wasn’t particularly interested in Gemma, lol. And now I adore her.
Edit 4: MAJA TIME!! "God dag, Henrik." <3
Edit 5: It makes me sad that people tend to think of Maja only as "Fredrik's mum". I know she was only in a few episodes so it's understandable, but she was a great character.
Edit 6: The “In Sweden, we are far less formal... unless you’re like Henrik...” scene!! That moment fucks me up.
Edit 7: Malick rearranging the theatre rotas so Henrik has more time to see Maja 😂

Maja: “Oh, really? What? Salsa dancing class? Speed dating? Or a session with your psychoanalyst?”
Henrik: *slams the desk* “Look, I didn’t ask you here!” :(

Edit 16: Maja is a Chantelle fan, just like the rest of us.
Edit 17: “You told me you’d never let me go.” <3 The chemistry between Henrik and Maja in this scene is absolutely gorgeous. They’re still so in love.

Maja: “How sad our patient has to face something like this alone. No family, no friends. No clue who he is or where he’s come from.”
Henrik: “I don’t know, I think there’s a certain appeal in being a blank canvas. Gives one the opportunity for reinvention.”
Maja: “But not everyone wants to erase their past, Henrik!”
AAAAA. This is it, my favourite Henrik scene ever. Gorgeously written, gorgeously played. Guy Henry gets the “an allistic person just told me something I did was insensitive and now I feel awful for it” look so right. The best moment of autistic representation I have ever seen. Fuck Jason, fuck Lizzie - this is what well-done autistic rep looks like. It’s one of the best things about series 15, the fact that Henrik gets to not understand things. I love him so, so much.
