Note
still remember being flabbergasted by the interview in which chanel claimed that before she invented the black dress no one would have dared to wear such a colour or style. (1) objectively untrue based on fashion plates of earlier similar dresses (2) this is like if i claimed in vogue that before me no one had dared to wear sequins.
You can literally find fashion advisers in the Victorian era advocating an early version of Little Black Dress culture, often saying that every woman should have at least one really good black dress in her wardrobe because it goes with everything color-wise, flatters everyone regardless of complexion and hair/eye color, and can be dressed up or down for almost any occasion (plus it can double for late mourning, depending on the trim and accessories).
"There should be a black dress in every wardrobe...with a few tasteful accessories in a becoming color, one need never be embarrassed by unexpected company...if the faithful black dress is ready for wear." -The Young Woman's Journey, 1899
"No wardrobe is complete without a handsome black silk [dress]." -Demorest's Monthly Magazine, 1868
"...every wardrobe should have at least one good black dress, of tolerable fineness..." -Whittaker's New Monthly Magazine, 1872
I'm convinced that Chanel's only exceptional skills were Being Hot, Having Her Finger On The Pulse of Fashion In the 1920s Until She Made A Name For Herself Doing One Specific Thing That Enough Rich Women Liked To Make Her Successful, and Taking Credit For Things So Commonplace That It Was Difficult To Fact-Check Without Having Extant Fashion Magazines Readily Accessible (something extremely hard to accomplish pre-internet). Without all that, she was just another couturiere of the Jazz Age who could have just as easily sunk as swam.
