Queer Indian Media: A Compilation
A couple of days ago, @impala124 sent @lurkingshan an ask about the lack of discussion about Queer Indian Media in fandom spaces. I wrote about it here, @neuroticbookworm here, and @waitmyturtles here (both of them have excellent points, I highly recommend you read their posts!). It's become quite apparent that people are willing to watch and engage in discourse about queer Indian media, it's just that the lack of popularity and accessibility makes it harder for people to start. So, I've decided to make a list tracking all of the queer Indian media I know of, and hopefully also any meta/discourse about it, which is an idea I've had floating in my head for months now.
This list is by no means comprehensive, so if you have recs, send them my way! Text me on DM, send an ask, tag me in your posts, whatever. And though it's not possible for me to watch everything on the list, I will be slowly going through as many of these as I can and writing about them, as well as hopefully finding more stuff and easier to access versions for the ones that are harder to access right now. This post is going to be a slow work in progress, but I'm hoping to update it regularly. So, if you'd like me to keep you updated, let me know through the tags/replies and I will tag you in future posts!
I've tagged the people who've recommended certain shows alongside each show. Everything on here is available online. The hyperlinked titles lead you to the media itself, meaning that it's available for free online with subtitles. Other details will be mentioned separately.
Disclaimer: The media I have watched/read have recommendation ratings (which will not always reflect my enjoyment of something, rather are based on how much I'd recommend it). While I did lightly screen everything on here, the criteria was 'has a trailer or otherwise showing queerness to be a central theme in the story' and 'is available online', so take that into account if you decide to pick something up, and definitely watch trailers and/or skim the wikipedia pages beforehand.

The ‘Other’ Love Story @/silverquillsideas
Just Another Love Story
Books
Memory of Light
Recommendation: 5/10 A historical book set during the colonial era, the lesbian romance is mostly a subplot that loses it's way towards the end. It's kind of a drag, but the history component is somewhat interesting.
Don't Let Him Know
Recommendation Rating: 7.5/10 with serious trigger warnings including rape. It's a brutally honest book designed to make the reader uncomfortable, so proceed with caution. I personally liked it quite a lot, but that's majorly because of how authentic the book felt.
Falling Into Place
Recommendation Rating: 8/10 A modern lesbian romance that follows similar beats to the typical thai bl/gl. A little underdeveloped in some places, but overall quite good.
My Magical Palace
Cobalt Blue
The Paths Of Marriage
Marriage Of A Thousand Lies

Did I mention that the discourse turned into "Bollywood only makes lgbt movies about coming out whereas Bojack Horseman, an AMERICAN show doesn't make a big deal out of it 😜 they have two guys kiss in the background someone comes out as asexual and nothing happens 😱" do you hear yourself. I understand the want for more Indian lgbt movies that don't revolve around coming out because I'd love to see them too, but unfortunately, we are not there yet. Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, released in 2019 (which is fairly recent) was the first mainstream (idk about indie films) lesbian film in 2 decades, after the first Indian movie about lesbians received protests (they literally stormed theatres and vandalised them). We've finally moved on from stereotypical and mocking portrayal of gay characters to a much more sensitive approach. I believe that we will get to stage where it's more normalised and that one day we will get lgbt movies that don't revolve around coming out, but we're most definitely not there yet
Can't believe I'm in a room full of people arguing about whether straight actors can play queer characters

What'd Ayushmann do? Just curious since you used to love him
omg where to begin anon
I have immense personal beef with him alongside the actual fucked up things he's done, but perhaps that's for another day.
For now, let's talk about dream girl 2 which BLATANTLY boasts the ever-problematic man-in-a-dress trope-
I mean, sure, one can argue that's the whole point of the movie, but one look at the trailer will tell you it's so horribly and insensitively written this time around.
Dream girl 1 was about loneliness- specifically, male loneliness, and how all anyone ever wants is to be heard. And about how people would probably understand you if they're just given a chance. And contains the lines "nobody in this world is right. Some are just less wrong than others."
Dream girl 2 is quite literally about a man who dresses up as a woman to prostitute himself for money. No joke.
Oh, and it gets worse. None of the men actually know he's a guy. So it's pushing the message that he's "tricking them." It's not even subtext like that's literally the entire premise. A man dresses up as a woman to trick innocent men. For money.
It's transphobic, it's severely misogynistic, and it's somehow also fetishistic in the worst way possible. I mean the entire promo was based on sexual marketing. I hope it was all for nothing and the movie fucking bombs.
Also, Ayushmann Khurrana, who is literally geriatric at almost 40, romances a 24 year old Ananya Pandey.
And, yes, this is typical for Bollywood. But for a chucklefuck who once prided himself on being "offbeat" and "brave" and "non-mainstream" and "feminist" this is a very chucklefuck thing to do.
Keep in mind that all of this comes after Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui (which does have its flaws, but the heart and intent was definitely there), a movie that celebrated trans women and literally was created to beat the stereotypes surrounding them. For which he pretended to be a trans ally for a whole YEAR AND A HALF as part of promotions.
So the sudden switch up with dg2 is... Appalling. To say the least.
Apart from this, he also used to post regularly about social/civic issues and problems in our country, which he entirely stopped doing once his movies bombed. And, yes, nobody should be expected to do that. But keep in mind, once again, this man's entire career was built off marginalised communities. Especially the queer community. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan caused like a 40% jump in his ig followers. I would know, because I was there.
Which led him to receive more roles in this little niche he loved so much.
The man was cocky enough to think a couple movies would change the world, let the arrogance get to his thick fucking skull, and decided tackling controversial topics won't come at a cost. (Well, newsflash, asshole! Oppression doesn't exist because marginalised people aren't trying hard enough to get their words out. It exists because it fucking exists. No amount of your mug on the big screen would have ever changed that).
He essentially went into this niche with all the wrong intentions. Not to speak up FOR queer people, women, scheduled castes, etc, but with the arrogance that he'll actually change the mind of the masses. God complex, more or less. Or saviour complex. Or both.
A few years ago, he'd made it clear that he's an actor, not an activist.
Mf forgot that himself somewhere along the way.
So, what did he do when his offbeat movies started failing back to back?
Packed up and turned his back on the very people he hollered about and celebrated himself for representing.
Went right into the cushy arms of mainstream, problematic, cringe, crass, insensitive side of Bollywood. For money.
Fucking hypocrite.
Hope all that cowardice was worth the bag.

Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui movie review....
It's a 2021 bollywood movie
People talk about gender equality and talk how movies with different gender concepts will spread awareness in the society and will tell them about their journey of discovery.
In this story the female lead Maanvi is a transgender with whom Manvinder has sex and falls in love with. Later she tells him her reality when he like an old school boy with that mentality shames her and tells her that she used him for sex. The male lead's family, his sister also shame her in front of her zumba class students which spread everywhere and all the people start commenting on her. Her own mother doesn't accept her but her father being progressive in nature doesn't shame her like others.
In the climax he changing his mentality runs towards her, understands her pain and loves her with her past.
This movie was declared a flop at box office, I don't understand why. The story, songs, characters, BGM...etc etc everything were amazing.
It literally showed the reality faced by such people who change their gender to be happy but they are mentally and emotionally torchered after taking all the physical pain in the operation they have undergone for the change.
The dialogues, their characters, the chemistry, the conversations between the leads in the mall where she tells what all she faced and in the hospital parking where he confesses his love to her and how much he misses her daily are written very well.
#pain showed well
#blame game explained
#amazing attempt

What lies ahead for Ayushmann Khurrana? “We should stop making films for Bandra to Versova audience,” say experts : Bollywood News
What lies ahead for Ayushmann Khurrana? “We should stop making films for Bandra to Versova audience,” say experts : Bollywood News
Last week, Bollywood Hungama tried understanding what is going wrong with Ayushmann Khurrana’s movies by having a detailed conversation with trade experts. For those not in the know, the actor has given four unsuccessful films in a row in a span of a year in the form of – Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, Anek, Doctor G and, the recent one, An Action Hero. This is in stark contrast to his fate before the…

All the mainstream movies and series being released- ek ladki ko, SMZS, chandigarh kare ashiqui, badhai do about queer relationships, not even within 4 years of just decriminalisation of gay sex is a proof of how ready we as a general country were to accept Queer sexualities.
Sure that doesn't mean homophobia is gone. That doesn't mean we're entirely politically correct (by western standards) when it comes to talking about queerness. That doesn't mean we still don't have long way to go for equal rights for queer people. But it means something.
Here's to many more conversations and celebrations of queer love 🥂

Hi! I’m also a queer Indian person. I just saw and loved your post on south asian queer media. I realised how many queer shows and movies I just missed because I never heard about them. I have only watched a couple like badhai do and maja ma but not most of the others. Have you watched Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it if you have. I was genuinely surprised they made that movie in 2021 and I never heard anyone talk about it.
I have not, but thank you for the rec anon! I've been receiving so many wonderful recommendations in the past two days, I'm definitely going to have to compile them all
When I do (eventually) watch the show, I'll definitely post about my thoughts! If you'd like, you could let me know what your blog is, so I can tag you in the post. No pressure though!

Loves comes in all forms
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't know much about love, not sure if I understand it enough. Neither am I old nor sage to recognize how it appears but if there's one feeling that has been expressed by saints & sinners alike it's love.
So, what does love really look like? I believe love is like water. It floats & takes the shape of the container it is held in. Let's explore it the filmy way:
- The not-so-conventional love story between Barfi (deaf & mute since birth) & Jhimil (autistic)
- The finding love in old age as seen in Lage Raho Munna Bhai
- The fight for acceptance of your orientation & lover by one's family as shown in Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan
- The love that knows to wait & didn't stop even when borders & religion separates them as portrayed in Veer-Zaara.
Movies have defined & redefined love time & again but one of the central aspects among its varied faces is acceptance.
Accepting one's identity for who they are, loving them unconditionally & the struggle around it is not just essential but also difficult.
The movie Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui explores acceptance & struggle effectively. The confusion, difficulty in acceptance & struggle is not just displayed through the lead character Manu but all the characters. It depicts the struggle Maanvi, her parents, relatives & everyone else has but it also gently reminds us that rose & love with any other name would still be the same.
Dum Lage Ke Haisha is another such reminder. The fat shaming that Sandhya faced from her husband acted as a contrast for the comfort & love she had for her own body. The realisation that it doesn't matter what size his wife is & that love doesn't fix itself on a shape knocks Prem's mind & heart towards the end of the movie.
So, what even is love? I don't know but I know that the next time someone worries about log kya kahenge I'll quote Amitabh Bachchan & sing "Mere angane me tumhare kya kaam hai", as an answer to all the people because love is love.
Keep sharing love in little ways!
