I love them.
I scribbled these this morning (or I guess noon, actually) before I had to go in before work. Why’d I choose the colorful fellow to draw with graphite? Not sure, I think I just wanted to see if I could draw them at all. I like their pointy teeth, hehe.
There was a Diesel too but I didn’t think it turned out well.

Would you do a fish fact about the Flashing Tile Fish please? My wife says they're cool.
Sure!
Daily fish fact #621
Chameleon sand tilefish!
Tumblr media
They're most known for their ability to swiftly change their colour, which they owe to special iridophores in their skin: colour-producing cells that are able to reflect different wavelengths of light! The species also is exhibits obligate monogamy.

(RIP to the saturation on my phone, you'll probably want to view this one on a computer to see more accurate colors)
After nearly a month and a half since I first brought it up, it’s here you guys!! This is the rough concept art for my zora oc, Varius (pronounced “Var-ee-us”)!!
She’s inspired off of the flashing tilefish, also called the chameleon or chameleon sand tilefish, a reef fish that is generally found in deeper waters. They’re most well-known for their ability to change colors, but what sets them apart from most other color-changing animals is that flashing tilefish are able to do so rapidly, sometimes in as little as half a second and they can cycle through a number of different colors one right after the other, hence the “flashing” part of their name. They’re particularly skittish and prone to stress, so they need an environment they feel safe in, typically staying in areas with plenty of hiding spaces, but they can be quite energetic as well, being able to swim very quickly. Despite the name, they really only flash when they’re stressed, and their color-changing is most often just occasionally switching from one color to another, but their normal resting color is an iridescent blue-green with hints of pink. I have a more in-depth explanation of this but Varius essentially changes color in a very similar way, often in reflection to her emotions. Because of this, she usually can’t hide much in terms of how she’s feeling, which she’s found can sometimes be a blessing and a curse
I originally mentioned her being a BOTW zora oc but she technically wasn’t living in the domain during the first game, so rather she’s more so an “Era of the Wilds” zora. She’s not natively from Hyrule, having moved to Zora’s Domain between the events of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. I felt it’d make sense that more people would move to Hyrule when rebuilding efforts get started after the defeat of Calamity Ganon. She’s a bit shy, still getting used to living in the domain, but despite not being as social as some of the other zora, she’s happy with her decision to move to Hyrule overall
Her job in the domain is as the Coral Reef’s supplier, working for/with Cleff by exploring the areas around the domain and collecting the different plants and whatnot that he sells in the store. She also acts somewhat as a traveling merchant, willing to sell some of what she finds while out on her collection runs, considering it as more revenue for the store that she can take back with her to give to Cleff along with the inventory he asked her for. Getting things for the store doesn’t take up all of her time so given her speed and energy, she’s also taken on an unofficial role as the domain’s errand runner/courier for random little things any of the zora need taken care of!
I’ve gotten surprisingly super invested in this oc, if the fact that I’ve literally thought of side quests for her is any indication, and this isn’t even the finished design (still need to figure out some of the details) but it’s been really fun! Anyways, I hope you guys like her cause I certainly do!! :D

When it comes to changing colors, no animal can beat the chameleon sand tilefish. They can change their appearance in an instant and flash the colors of the rainbow!

Howdy Echo! Thank you kindly for your sweet words on my Mermay art with Molly, I appreciate you!
I wanted to come ask, if you could pick a marine animal to base a mermaid tail off of (for example, a dolphin tailed mermaid) what would you pick for your s/i and for Miss Frizzle 👀???
Tex @tex-treasures
Oh! Thank you for the question!!! I appreciate you too 🥰
My s/i has black octopus tentacles like Ursula!!
Ms. Frizzle’s tail would be like a Flashing Tilefish, which changes colour like a chameleon to match its surroundings.

Fugo as a merman pls? :)

Colorful man, colorful fish. He found a treasure from the surface!
Fugo's fins are based off the Flashing Tilefish, also known as the chameleon sand tilefish. Like Fugo, it can change into many different colors rapidly. Because let's be honest, this boy has like 5 color schemes that all differ from each other.
Hope you like the art Non! :3
