to include in your next poem/story
Archē - First principle or origin of things that exist. The Ionian philosophers posited a single element (water, air, fire) as the archē in the belief that everything was reducible to one substance.
Ataraxia - “Without perturbation, calmness.” Describes the Epicurean ideal of happiness: freedom from pain in the body and in the soul.
Cynicism, philosophical - Not a school, but a loosely organized sect. Most famous exponent was Diogenes of Sinope (ca. 400– ca. 325 BCE), who preached that happiness attained by limiting desires to the most basic needs. Ideal of life is attainment of self- sufficiency (autarkeia).
Elysian Fields/ Elysium - Abode of dead heroes and righteous souls. Set in Homer’s Odyssey 4 at the edge of Ocean; in Vergil’s Aeneid 6 it was incorporated into Hades as a separate part. Also equated with the Isles or Isle of the Blest.
Golden Bough - In mythology, a branch with golden leaves needed to gain entrance to the underworld.
Hubris - “Insolence, arrogance.” Used in situations in which a person of humble station insults a superior or, more often, when a mortal commits affrontery against a god.
Nous - “Mind.” Begins and directs the cosmic whirl in the cosmology of Anaxagoras, though not identified with god. For both Plato and Aristotle, the rational part of the soul.
Sophist - Private teachers in Athens in the 5th century BCE. They taught mainly rhetoric and techniques of argument to students preparing for public life; reputed for questioning traditional values, myths, and religious beliefs and for promoting relativism.
Theion, (to) - “The divine”; a quality that belongs to both gods and exceptional mortals.
Theomachia - A battle among the gods.

How to Write a Death Scene
So, you want to write a death scene that hits your readers hard, right? Something that sticks with them, makes them feel something real?
First, give the death meaning. You can’t just toss in a death for the shock factor and call it a day. Even if it’s sudden or unexpected, the death has to matter to the story. Think about how it changes things for the characters who survive. Does it mess with their relationships? Their goals? Make sure this moment sends ripples through the rest of your plot. It’s gotta affect everything that happens after, like an emotional earthquake.
Then, think about timing. You don’t want to drop a death scene at the wrong moment and ruin the vibe. If it’s part of a big heroic moment or a heartbreaking loss in the middle of the story, it should feel earned. The timing of the death decides how your readers will react, whether they feel relief, gut-wrenching sorrow, or are totally blindsided. The right moment makes all the difference.
Next up, focus on the characters’ emotions. Here’s the thing, it's not always the actual death that makes a reader cry, it's how everyone feels about it. How do the characters react? Is the person dying scared, or are they at peace? Are the people around them in shock, angry, or just completely destroyed? You need to dive deep into these emotions, because that’s where your reader connects.
Make sure to use sensory details to pull readers into the scene. What does it feel like? The sound of their breathing, the stillness when they’re gone, the way everything feels heavy and wrong. Little details make the death feel real and personal, like the reader is right there with the characters, feeling the weight of the moment.
If your character has the chance, give them some final words or actions. What they say or do in those last seconds can really hit hard. Maybe they share a piece of advice, ask for forgiveness, or try to comfort the people around them. Even a simple gesture, a smile, a touch, a last look can leave a lasting impression. This is your last chance to show who this character was, so make it count.
Finally, don’t just stop when the character dies. The aftermath is just as important. How do the survivors deal with it? Does your main character fall apart, or do they find a new sense of purpose? Are there regrets? Peace? Whatever happens next should be shaped by the death, like a shadow that never quite goes away. Let your characters carry that weight as they move forward.

Amative - relating to or indicative of love.
Aubade - a song or poem of lovers parting at dawn.
Besotted - strongly infatuated; (archaic) intoxicated; drunk. The earliest recorded usage of the related adjective besotted (in the late 16th century, from the past participle of the verb besot), however, described a state of intoxication due to amorousness rather than adult beverages; the still-current sense of besotted meaning “drunk” didn’t show up until the early 19th century.
Billet-doux - a love letter. In French, billet doux means “sweet letter.”
Calf-love - transitory love or affection often experienced by young people. The term puppy love is more commonly used than calf-love these days, perhaps owing to more people raising pets than cattle. But both refer to intense yet often fleeting affection experience by young—especially teenaged—couples.
Mellifluous - (of a voice or words) sweet or musical; pleasant to hear; often used to describe a lover's voice. Mellifluous comes from two Latin roots: the noun mel, meaning “honey,” and the verb fluere, meaning “to flow.” As it has for centuries, mellifluous typically and figuratively describes sound, and is often at the tip of the tongues of writers who proclaim that a voice or melody is smooth like molasses.
Opsigamy - marriage at an advanced age.
Osculate - to kiss. Osculate turns up mostly in humorous contexts as a fancy word meaning “to kiss.” The Latin noun for “kiss,” osculum, is also the diminutive of the Latin noun os, meaning “mouth.” Our adjective oral also comes from this root. Osculate (or its related noun osculation) might be used as an alternative to kiss to avoid repeating the latter word, or to bring an ironically clinical connotation to a common action for which slangier alternatives like smooch exist.
Sheep's eye - a shy longing and usually amorous glance—usually used in plural.
Venust - (archaic) beautiful, graceful, elegant.

How to Improve your Writing

Taste is subjective, and opinions differ about what "good writing" looks like. Most of us have read a bestseller or two and wondered, "How did this thing get published?" Nevertheless, I would argue that most work does not get published unless it demonstrates a certain level of technical competence. The grammar is correct. The prose is readable. I would further argue that most manuscripts are rejected because the writing is not technically competent. The manuscript never stands a chance because the writer simply doesn't know the craft of writing well enough. If you write well, you have already set yourself apart from 99% of what agents and editors see every day. Below are some notes on what I call "sentence level competence" — the ability to craft prose at the most basic level. These tips reflect the most common problems I've observed in unpublished manuscripts.
Sentence-Level Competence
Sentence focus — the subjects of all clauses should be appropriate to the content of the sentence.
Favor the concrete over the abstract, the antecedent over the pronoun.
Example: It was a sunny day. (the subject "it" is boring and vague.)
Better: The sky was brilliant blue. (Here the subject is sky, which is what the sentence was supposed to be about.)
If you are writing a sentence about a guy named Fred, the subject in the sentence should be (surprise!) Fred.
Exercise
Go through a page of prose and underline your own subjects.
How many are abstract?
How many of your sentences are truly focused?
Modifiers
Be sure the modifier refers to the right thing.
The modifier should refer to the closest noun.
Confusing modifiers will trip up the reader, consciously or subconsciously.
By the same token, pronouns should have clear antecedents.
Always place the modifier as close to the subject as possible.
Example: Can you help other writers who are writing books like me? (I got this question recently. I understand what the person is saying, but 'like me' follows the word 'books' so he is implying, without meaning to, that there are people producing books that look like him.)
Better: Can you help other writers like me who are writing books?
Exercise
Color-code a page of your manuscript, making each phrase and clause a different color.
Match up dependent clauses and phrases with their modifiers.
Avoid getting your modifier too far away from the thing being modified.
Deft Description
Choose your details carefully.
A description should be vivid, but surgically precise.
The detail must be given for a reason, and have a logical connection to the plot or advancement of character.
Avoid long "grocery lists" of details.
For a paragraph-length description, offer a uniting theme — an extended metaphor — to give the details cohesion.
Example: He was six feet tall, three hundred pounds, with brown hair, small brown eyes, a big nose and big fists. He wore jeans and a muscle shirt. He looked angry. (this is way too much description for the reader to keep track of, and it is offered as a random list)
Better: He looked like a rhino, ready to charge. (then you can pick a few details that reinforce the image of a rhino)
Exercise
Go through a chapter and delete all adjectives and adverbs.
Read through, then add some back in sparingly.
You may find you can do with less than before.
Parallelism
Clauses or phrases that are part of a list should be similar in structure.
Unparallel constructions are awkward and difficult to read, even if the reader can't put her finger on the exact problem.
Example: He likes dogs, hiking in the woods and reads books a lot. (Dogs is a single noun, hiking in the woods is a participial phrase, reads books a lot is a simple predicate. These are all totally different things. Make them the same, and the sentence will flow much better.)
Better: He likes walking his dog, hiking in the woods, and reading lots of books.
Exercise
Try constructing your descriptions in parallel units — absolutes, infinitives, adjectives.

my favorite writing exercises :D
go to a public place (coffee shop, library, etc.) with something to write with, and create fake character descriptions for random people you see. list what they wear, give them a name, and create their backstory. pay close attention to what they look like and what they are doing (studying, reading, etc.)
look around and find two random, inanimate objects. describe what they look like, how they would act if they were alive, and give them names. after the individual descriptions are finished, write a tragic love story between the two objects.
write down a random word (this is more interesting if the word is longer) and list the history of the word, the definition, examples of it in sentences, and its synonyms and antonyms.

This May I want to get back into writing. I’m not at all consistent. I’m at a point where I don’t feel like I can work on bigger things, because I can’t guarantee myself to keep working on it in a week from now. So I will take this month as a training month to get back into the habit of writing. I will do this by writing (or trying to write) 200 words every day. Topic is irrelevant. How great my writing is that day is irrelevant. Just 200 words written down. A habit taking 21 days to form was debunked, it does take a lot longer, but 31 days are a start I would say. These are already 140 words, so 200 words every day are hopefully manageable. You're more than welcome to join me if you like 😊
