dnd character 👀 mr oliver paladin 👀 tell me more

what does he look like? what weapon does he use? what's his background? anything you want to say about him at all cause I'd love to hear it?

his background is a sort of modified version of a folk hero, cause I really liked the character traits but he isn't quite what you'd think of as a ''hero'', so I'm not really sure where I'm going with that honestly, maybe taking the character traits from folk hero and the background feature from acolyte, cause that's got to do with shelter and paladins (sort of) and stuff, and there's not really any other backgrounds that fit with his backstory? but I might flavor it to do more with fae but I would need to figure out to balance that, so maybe it's more instead of a religious institution it's like, druids, they'll help him, cause he has sort of the same generic beliefs as then? (don't fuck with nature, it's important; necromancy is not really a good thing, but it's also not necessarily a bad thing, depends on the person and if you let them die afterwards)

and I'm not completely sure on what he looks like, cause originally he was gonna be a ranger so I designed him around that and now stuff is changing (cause we needed a healer and a tank so the first one that might have the potential to be both was paladin, and then I read about the oath of the ancients and REALLY liked it), but, basically:

The big thing here is his hair, I can't figure out if its longer or shorter, but other than that this is a pretty good representation of what I think he looks like? Limited by the general absence of chaimmail options i like on heroforge, but other than that, it fits pretty well

and his weapon is a battleaxe!!!!

It’s #NewComicDay!

Wednesdays are supposed to be the days that I promote something new and interesting, something independent, in the comic world. I did a little digging for new webcomics this week, but I plain didn’t have a lot of free time. (#Squirrel has been having health issues, and being her eyes, legs, and hands has been time-consuming.)

Honestly, I came into today not knowing what I was going to do. I can’t shit the bed on a new thing in the SECOND WEEK, right?

Well, today I got an IM from a friend and colleague, Troy Brownfield. Troy’s like me, he’s been working at this writing thing for a long time and he’s had some impressive successes...just not enough of them to quit his day job. (Also, he’s a teacher and not a bartender, a far nobler way to keep one’s family fed and watered.) Troy and I are both part of IMMINENT Press, a collective of comic creators just trying to get our shit out there.

Troy wanted my feedback on the latest page of his webcomics, Sparkshooter. Now, I’ve promoted Sparkshooter before, and who wouldn’t? It’s a great comic by a great team. But he wanted feedback on the latest page...which is hard to judge out of context...and it had been a while since I’d caught up with Sparkshooter, to my shame.

So I went back and reread it from the beginning. Man.

Sparkshooter is nothing like Hunter Black. My comic is fiction that bears little resemblance to the real world, whether you’re talking about Will’s Samurai Jack-inspired style of art or the hard-boiled fiction that is our calling card.

Sparkshooter is a love-letter to a real music scene in a real city, 2003 Indianapolis, where Troy came of age. Troy name-checks so many bands and venues from that area that you just KNOW they’re real, otherwise he’s doing a Tolkien-esque amount of world-building. But he’s not, because those people and places add color. They add verisimilitude. They add juice.

There’s another way that Troy is like me...or at least I like to think that I have this quality...he has voice. When I read my own writing, it reads like it could only have come from me. My characters speak with my particular cadence and my slightly off-kilter word choice. Troy’s characters speak with an undeniable wit, even the ones that you think might dumb otherwise. His command of dialogue is, dare I say, Whedon-like. If a character in Sparkshooter doesn’t have the correct retort, pay close attention, because you’re probably in for a MOMENT.

(Please don’t take what little I have to say about the artwork as a slight. Enkaru, the current artist, is a KILLER, but Troy’s my guy and writing is what I know.)

Fantasy is my genre. It’s what I gravitate toward every time my fingers hit the keys, but you have to remember that fantasy doesn’t always mean big swords and chaimmail bras. (Note to self, SOMEONE in Hunter Black should wear a chainmail bra at SOME point.) Sometimes it means walking the road less traveled...because like the man said (and I paraphrased), that can make all the difference.
