oh. my. goodness. its like 3am in my area and i just finished a nightlong binge on the manhwa, Secret Alliance by Creator Lero. if i had to put it into a genre, i’d say its a psychological thriller, and…
ho. ly. shit.
i was never a visual novel or “comics” person, but holy fuck. this blew me away. i discovered a tik tok about it, with the nutshell plot of “stalker crossdresses as a girl to stalk his object of attraction, who is afraid of men” and quickly gained an interest. but as i read further into the manhwa, it was so much more than that.
before i get into the details, i warn that the manhwa has dark topics such as stalking, obsession, attempted suicide, assault, sexual harassment, and trauma. the ramble (and spoilers) is gonna be below the cut. stay safe and healthy yall
okay. ho. ly. shit.
so, i don’t even know where to begin. the first few chapters introduce our main characters, eun sian and chae “yuri”. right off the bat, you quickly realize eun sian’s intense fear of men. you can already tell that she has some trauma with men, and as you continue to read, you find that her paranoid mother perpetuates and reinforces that fear; a helicopter parent to the extreme.
not only that, you can immediately detect that something isnt quite right with chae yuri (even before it was revealed he was a guy).
i dont really wanna explain the whole story in its entirety, as i believe its a story best experienced. but what i will go into is the amount of love that was poured into this story. it still astounds me
the characters are complex, and their personalities and actions are deeply rooted in the trauma that they went through. eun sian and chae yuri’s relationship is so toxic and wrought with manipulation and co-dependent, and it was written so well. it beautifully illustrates how two people that come from two different, but toxic households often can find themselves in a toxic relationship for the both of them, as they have no other reference for love.
and speaking of relationships, yujin’s and eun sian’s relationship makes me want to squeal and giggle and they’re just so cute!! i loveee at the beginning, yujin subverts our expectations and ends up being a playboy who loves the feeling of being wanted. it gives him sm room for development, and makes his relationship with eun sian so much sweeter.
yujin and eun sian make a deal that he helps her get over her fear of men, while eun sian helps yunjin get together with chae yuri. in the earliest stages of their relationship, you can tell that yujin was able to ground eun sian and reassure her when needed. even beneath his playboy exterior, his caring nature shone through, especially for her. meanwhile, eun sian makes yujin want to be better for her (and if you seen a very old post, you know how i feel about that). i loved their friendship at the beginning, and i loved their romance at the end. they’re so healthy for each other and im glad they got together in the end
and speaking of the ending?????? sjdkdndkddjjdksjdsknsnz. i loved it so. much. it was just so fulfilling. i won’t spoil it, but it touched my soul to its very core, and i couldnt think of a more satisfying note to leave it off of.
the depiction of trauma felt very realistic and well written too. eun sian’s breakdowns felt so well done, and not once did it feel like the story was calling her “crazy” or “hysterical” even if other characters told her that she was. and actually, all the relationships felt so realistic, its astounding.
and the character development was so… empowering. it was amazing to watch the moments eun sian take back the parts of herself that her abusers took, it was amazing to watch yujin transform from a playboy to a golden retriever boyfriend. i just… love love love!!
i do wish they delved into yujin’s backstory a lil more, gave hyunee (the best friend) a more influential role, and did some more with yunjin’s blackmail when he found out about chae yuri, but all in all, i loved it. i started reading at 11, and kept reading til 3. its an absolute page turner, and extreme kudos to the artist(s) and writer(s)! you have my respect
to those who want to read it, the sites i read the manhwa either has a subscription service, or an insane amount of porn ads and porn pop up browser tabs. just for viewer discretion. if it sounds like yall can deal, please read! you won’t regret it. ill definitely be revisiting this manhwa again and again. its that good
have a wonderful day yall! im finally gonna get some sleep

"why cant chae yul have his happy ending??"
(or: why the ending of lero's secret alliance was perfect)
part 1 of 2
spoilers for the webtoon secret alliance, i'd 100% recommend reading it!! it's not too long and absolutely worth the read :)
this is also going to be an. obscenely long post
i constantly see people complain about how secret alliance ended, and how yul deserved better. this is complete horse shit and here's why.
1: his happy ending should be that sian did not press charges on him. this is. literally mentioned in the comic. she had every right to put him in jail.
2: he did get his happy ending. he wouldn't have been able to grow or get better as a person if he had stayed in a relationship with sian or continued to do his crazy shit
how do you read this and still think that his ending wasn't happy
him going away from her and getting a job and being a functional person was his happy ending. he's fucking miserable, but it allows him to actually become a happy person.
also people who defend yul's actions because they relate to him make me want to explode JUST BECAUSE YOURE ALSO NUTS DOESNT MEAN HE ISNT.
like most of the fandom are just like "oh i think sian and yul are cute" the whole plot of the story is that she is horrified of men, him specifically, and he's so fucking delusional and unstable that he chooses to crossdress and befriend her as a woman to be with her again.
they're a nightmare. sian can't even convince herself that she likes him, and the only reason they ever appeared to be friendly at most is because sian is a people pleaser and yul is clingy and determined.
the whole point of the damn comic is that yul is batshit crazy and needs help. he is absolutely mentally ill, but this doesn't excuse his actions. the fact that he is mentally ill also contributes to why sian cut him so much slack.
also. if you want a man to be in love with and that's the reason you like yul and want him with sian,
YUJIN IS RIGHT THERE!!
he is literally the most perfect man in the fucking universe and y'all are head over heels for the dude who bashed him over the head with a fucking pipe.
anyways. back on topic.
he didn't deserve a good ending. he should have gone to jail. but he was literally just given another chance and told to get his shit together. he got the best ending he possibly could have without jeopardizing sian's happy ending.
i don't remember what blog i got these screenshots from, but a lot of this rant was just me responding to one long post from a blog that tried to explain why yul deserved better. if i find them, i'll edit this post.
1: never at any point in the comic does it state that yul was physically abusive. he was fucking deranged and absolutely mentally and emotionally abusive (unintentionally), but he didn't hit her. the closest he got was saying he'd stab her so that they could frame her shitty mom. how did you come to that conclusion??
2: HOW ARE YOU GOING TO HATE THE PROTAGONIST?? she's also not plain in the damn slightest. she's boring and plain at the start, but that's because she's fully controlled by fear and her mom. as she gets over her fears and works through her issues, her personality is so amazing and cool!
that doesn't make up for anything?????
he tried to take her away from her mom in order for them to get closer. he told people at the school to bully her more so that he could act like the knight in shining armor and help her. she said she was going to leave him so he locked them both in a shed at the school overnight when he knows she is horrifically scared of men.
he tried to take her away from her mom in order for them to get closer. he told people at the school to bully her more so that he could act like the knight in shining armor and help her. she said she was going to leave him so he locked them both in a shed at the school overnight when he knows she is horrifically scared of men.
he was abusive the whole time. keeping someone locked overnight in a warehouse with you against their will is abusive.
her condition got worse because the first man she actually trusted ended up being an obsessive stalker. it is incredibly straightforward. it wasn't about how badly he abused her, it's the fact that he completely betrayed her trust.
it doesn't make sense because that's not the parallel. the connection between yul and sian's mom is that both of them had an idealized image of sian in their heads that they loved, but they both ignored what sian actually wanted or needed. sian's mother blamed her for "attracting dirty men" and basically kept her holed up in an apartment to avoid ever facing that fear because she thought sian was the problem. yul saw sian as a perfect specimen that was being tainted whenever she interacted with people he deemed unworthy of her. they are absolutely parallels.

ADN YUJIN. OH GOD.YUJIN JESNSO. HES such an understanted caracter compared to sian and yul i mean he gets way less screentime and kt takes a minute to endear the audience to him but hes got so much to him hes such a good chaaracyer and how you can SEE sian getting under his skin and deconstructing his walls and its not. some thing wjere shes like special. its important that shes not inherently special like shes special to him but like. im trying to say tjat their relationship is like a foil to yul and sians bc yul and sian were pulled together bc of exterior shit like ppl picked on yul and sian was afraid of men bc of her mother like that's not things that are like a part of them those are external things placed on them. i guess. and sian and yujin pull themselves tpgehter. like yul and sian are pushed together but sian and yujin pull themselves.towards the other. kts not bc of how anybody treats them or trauma someone has inflicted on them. its bc of their own person its bc of them. yeah. yeahyeajyeah that

I just realized most of my childhood crushes are women 😳
How did I not notice I am bi before...? I mean now I know it's obvious, but back then I was the most oblivious fool in existence.
Like we are talking about a person who rejected girls before saying she was straight , only to wake up several years later and find out the only straight thing i had was my ruler and I made a fool out of myself for most of my life lmaoooo.
"Yeah, I think x is pretty. What? Attracted to her? Pfft, no way!" - A dumbass.
Well, it isn't as if I can freely say it outside of internet or my circle of friends since my country is homophobic as fuck-
#moth rambles#Short haired woman have always been my weakness#Like for some reason I think they are the prettiest of them all?#I might even say I had small crushes on some girls with short hair I knew#Yanderes appeal to me more when they are women too#Chae yuri has me admiring her more than Yul for example#I was studying when this came into my mind#and I started laughing#poor oblivious old self#prob everyone else knew it but her#loser ha!

i know it says mother and daughter but some of them could be used as a poster for a movie focused on an intricate homoerotic friendship
wait lemme check again. ohhh ur right. the headline fooled me it's even homophoic to call them familial in these
we could have like. some kind of homoerotic student teacher relationship like a cellist and her protege with a toxic but deeply compelling artistic relationship. the teacher is creating the student in her own image and the intimacy of becoming is terrifying but also an honor, something deeply spiritual and sexually charged. the contrast between elegance and intimacy/dishevelment and the different gazes is doing a lot of storytelling.
this is probably the main movie poster. the title is something like Dollmaker (2024). it's a feminist movie so the main theme is something like how women have to be like dolls and perform in order to be accepted in high places in society. one of the main tensions is that chae sira's character makes yuri's character conform to the level of femininity required to be respected in south korea's classical music world. but neither of them actually fit in, no matter how hard they try. yuri's gaze is lower and facing away from the camera, implying some kind of power dynamic between her and chae sira, whose gaze is bright and direct with a relaxed but bright smile. there's a dark ribbon around her neck and sira's dress is black, connecting her arms with yuri's neck, some kind of power dynamic for sure. sira's partially covered. implying secrets and ways she puts yuri in front of herself when addressing the world.
this is also an excellent movie poster. the possessive arm around the waist. how chae sira's fingers are curled around yuri's. the bare collarbones. yuri's sleeveless less formal dress but matching shoes. the disheveled hair represents the fact that while they are beautiful and elegant and therefore normative, something that shouldn't be happening is happening and it's something they share, a secret. they both address the camera, yuri is more posed and off balance, leaning on sira who has both feet planted. maybe yuri tries to become her teacher in every way possible, supposedly to achieve the same kind of success but actually because she's sexually obsessed with her. but it's actually not the real version of chae sira's character that she's emulating but the carefully manufactured version she's cultivated to show to the world. what yuri is trying to become is not a real person, it's impossible to actually achieve perfection.
their hair looks wet, like they were just doing something that needs explaining before u saw them. chae si ra looks regal and formal in her posture, is looking ahead but not directly at the viewer. she is putting up a front, and the hand curled around yuri is representing that she is trying to protect her. yuri is in what looks like a long shirt over a slip dress, she presented herself to the world in a way that is inappropriate and maybe chae sira even took off her outer layer to give it to yuri. yuri is less formal but her arms are covered and the color matches with sira's dress more than hers. but yuri directly addresses the camera, holding onto sira. there's a boldness in her gaze, she doesn't care that she is being seen as inappropriate. she is hiding behind sira but also bolder than sira.
maybe the plot is that yuri slowly goes crazy trying to become her teacher and pushes herself to practice too much and spirals. meanwhile chae sira has a professional threat and someone is trying to blackmail her and she's hiding this from yuri who thinks it's because she herself did something wrong to make her teacher distrust her, which contributes to the spiraling. at her lowest moment yuri does something that could end her career but chae sira puts her own career at risk to protect her. idk what happens at the end. but the highlights are like very intimate touching in cello instruction scenes, borderline bdsm teaching sessions where sira has a very stern but quiet voice and yuri is like Into It. yuri has a fever dream that they're ballroom dancing together and sira is teaching her while yuri has never danced before and yuri's ballgown falls into shreds as they twirl across the floor. sira becomes slowly less and less physically put together as her stressors weigh on her. her make up starts to be less crisp, her clothes less formal and put together. yuri helps her put pins back in her hair and zips up a dress for her. yuri comes to her house to tend to her when she's sick and it's a very intimate moment but sira pushes her away even more after that happens. yuri black swans herself thinking of the imaginary perfectly feminine star cellist that she could be if she could only absorb her teacher's essence and the fake version of her in her mind tries to kill her. it's revealed that her teacher once had a lesbian affair with another cellist from berlin. but it's the one where she has a secret kid with a male conductor that is what she's being blackmailed for.
#asks#yuri#chae si ra#i was checking for resemblance only the first time and they do look similar#but the gay vibe is stronger than the resemblance#by a lot#i just watched whiplash and tar and the intense student teacher relationships weren't sexy at all so i wanna make a sexy one#i'm gonna keep adding to this post as i think of stuff check back later!#dollmaker

there are a lot of inconsistencies in chae yuls narrating, he is an unreliable narrator. the other reason why people bully him is that he chews them out he tried to stab his female classmates for dressing him as a girl. i think he was mostly bullied because of his toxic personality
this has been in my asks for a while, so sorry for the answer delay
although yul is an extremely unreliable narrator, i don't think most of the bullying he faced was his fault. both sian and yul mention that he was bullied for being effeminate. his bitterness and toxic personality was most likely caused by that bullying (as well as his abusive household), and that probably amplified the bullying. bullies enjoy when their target gives a reaction, so seeing yul become violent would motivate them to treat him worse.

I think I like “Yellow Circle”---but I'm too distracted by Yuri's lipstick to concentrate on the music, so I’m not sure!
What’s going on here? I can't tell if she's trying to make her lips look thinner or plumper.
(My little WIZ*ONE heart imagines Yujin having STARSHIP's makeup people sabotage Yuri, because in the battle of YenJin vs YenYul, the stakes are too high to play fair! 😜)
