Yo quisiera agregar que Gabriel también está así:
Y Emma:
Observando a Blair por un segundo en la audiencia junto con todas las animadores, sus labios dibujaron una sonrisa afilada—Me pregunto si tu novio todavía te querrá después…
[…]
— ¿Después? No entiendo de qué hablas, Emma, ¿me explicas?
[…]
—¡Ya sabes! ¡Parkinson!

Snape looks back on your days at Hogwarts, how your friendship came to be, and how it came to end.

Ch 4 .:Budding Feelings and the Beginning of the End:.
Severus Snape had made a lot of mistakes in his life, and seeing you again after all these years was forcing him to relive every single one of them.
He stared blankly at the wall in front of him, shrouded in the darkness and grim silence of his empty house. He never thought he'd see you again, and certainly not under these circumstances. When he'd laid his eyes on you in the kitchen of 12 Grimmauld place he couldn't believe it. He, much like the rest of the Order (except for Molly, apparently) assumed you wouldn't be at these meetings any longer. After James and Lily were murdered and Sirius was thrown into Azkaban, you'd left London and headed to New York under the Ministry's alliance with MACUSA, hoping to help bridge the gap between muggle-borns and purebloods in America. He knew you had been back to meet Harry a handful of times, but he also knew that being in this city brought up painful memories for you, so he was as stunned as anyone else to see you standing there in the doorway, greeting them as if nothing were out of the ordinary.
He could see that traveling had been good for you. He'd heard through the Hogwarts circuit that you were back on auror duty across the world, taking special assignments from Dumbledore and the Minister for Magic himself. You seemed like you were doing better, but when you turned to smile at him he could see the hesitation and the sadness that brewed behind your eyes, likely his doing.
He desperately wanted things to go back to what they were before—
Before he'd ruined it. . .
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1974 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Alright students,” Professor Slughorn said as everyone finished filing inside the room, “today we're going to be pairing off into new partners for the upcoming project.”
Groans and nervous chatter flooded the sound space immediately, no one very thrilled with having to work with someone new out of their control. You cast a glance over to Lily who looked equally displeased. You liked being her partner, you both excelled at the subject and worked really well together.
“Yes, yes, I know,” Slughorn said, waving the complaints off, “However, I am going to be giving you the luxury of choosing your own partners this time, but everyone—”
The energy in the room instantly shifted, everyone shoving around people to get to their friends.
“—keep in mind, if I see any slacking off or trouble brewing in these new partnerships I will not hesitate to rearrange them!”
Slughorns's words were completely lost among the commotion as people paired off before you could even get your bearings. Snape stalled as he stared at you from across the room; Lily had already been dragged away by Mary, and his brain was trying to work out how to ask you to be his partner.
Suddenly an arm was slung over your shoulder and you turned towards the new presence in surprise. You looked up to see Evan Rosier, the sleeves of his shirt rolled up to his elbows and his Slytherin tie loose around his neck.
Oh, sod it, Snape cursed internally. He was too late.
“Wanna partner up?” Rosier asked, a crooked grin gracing his chiseled features, “It'd be my honor to have the smartest Potions partner in class, not to mention the most attractive.”
You rolled your eyes at the praise. Evan was your friend, and he was nice to look at, but if he thought that you would be willing to do all the work for the both of you in exchange for some cheap compliments, then he had another thing coming. You locked eyes with Snape from across the room
“It would be your honor,” you smirked up at Rosier, “but I already have a partner, sorry.”
It took Snape a few seconds to realize what you were doing, but once he snapped out of it he made his way towards you. You almost chuckled at how robotic he looked as he did, clearly shocked.
Rosier looked between the two of you and rolled his eyes.
“Suit yourself, sweetheart,” he said, letting you go and pushing you lightly in Snape's direction, “but if you change your mind, you know where to find me.” He sent a wink your way that left Snape's blood inexplicably boiling,
“Thanks for that,” you grinned, “and just so you know, I would have chosen you even if he didn't come up to me, so don't get all pouty about it, okay?”
Severus just looked at you blankly. Even after four years it was frightening how well you were able to read him; for a moment he was scared that he'd accidentally projected his thoughts to you, but he wasn't anywhere near that level of legillemency yet. He wanted to say something that had some semblance of gratitude but settled on:
“Whatever.”
To which you just laughed and dragged him to your now shared desk.
You really were something else.
“Now then,” Professor Slughorn addressed the room, “today we will be beginning the new unit on toxic concoctions, starting with the Draught of Living Death. If you would all turn to page ten of your books, we will get started presently.”
You turned open your book and Severus did the same. As he did, you noticed that nearly every page was covered in small notes littering the margins, with some of the instructions circled, crossed out, or modified. You were hardly surprised, Snape had been pouring over this book since last year when he'd stolen it from a fifth year Slytherin who'd been speaking poorly of you (that last part you were unaware of).
You turned your attention to the directions, reaching over to preheat the burner so your cauldron would be hot enough by the time you began. However, as soon as you lit the flame with the tip of your wand, your cauldron shot up into the air, hitting the ceiling with a loud BANG! before crashing down back onto your table, breaking several of the glass instruments that were settled there.
Your face burned embarrassment as everyone in the room turned to look at you in shock.
“Snape, (L/n),” Slughorn said, surprised, “whatever happened?”
“I. . .” you began, not knowing what to say, “I don't know, I'm sorry, Professor.”
“Quite all right,” he said uncertainly, restoring your table and equipment with a wave of his wand, “just be sure whatever that was doesn't happen again.”
“Of course,” you mumbled, trying to ignore the snickering around you. If you noticed the way that it stopped as soon as Snape sent a deathly glare at the culprits, you didn't show it. You reached down to grab your cauldron, noticing that the bottom was dusted in some sort of orange powder. As you turned it over, a note fell out of it.
You're welcome, (L/n). Sorry I couldn't be there for the fireworks~
J.P.
“That sneaky little, ugh,” you crumpled the note, growling in frustration.
“What is it?” Severus asked, peering over your shoulder to glance at the paper. However, as soon as you tried to show it to him it vanished in your hands in a wisp of glowing embers. You turned to look at Severus who was still staring at you expectantly.
“It was Potter,” you rolled your eyes.
Anger flashed in Severus' eyes before confusion replaced it momentarily.
“But that was your cauldron, not mine. Why would Potter want to mess with you?”
And now the anger was back again. Snape was used to Potter’s crew targeting him; bullying and suffering through minor hexes had become an everyday occurrence, but when he imagined them doing anything to you it was enough to make him see red.
“Ah, well. . .” you trailed off, deciding that telling him you'd yelled at the group of Gryffindors: 'if you jerks want to have a go at Severus you're gonna have to get through me first!' was a bad idea.
“I sort of, maybe, kind of. . . started it?” you said. Severus raised a brow at you. “Look, Potter was asking for it, okay? It was about time someone messed with him for a change. And besides, it was hilarious, even Lily got a kick out of watching that broom hit him in the head.”
Severus chuckled at that, a hint of pride welling in his chest at yours and Lily's shared distaste for the Potter boy.
“But that was the last straw,” you declared, grabbing a Sopophorus bean from the bowl in front of you and a knife to cut it as per the instructions, “I'm sick and tired of him acting like he's better than everyone else,” you said, stabbing down with your knife for emphasis. The Sopophorus bean jumped as you did, sliding out from under your blade and skidding across your cutting board. You huffed as you grabbed it again, placing it back down and holding it in place. “And he walks around with that little posse of his like he runs this school!” You brought your knife down again, moving your fingers at the last second, but the bean still managed to slip away, trying to bounce back into the bowl.
“This means war!” you seethed, grabbing the runaway legume again, now at your wit's end, and crushing it in your fist. It stopped jumping as the beet-red juice of the plant dripped down your arm, and Severus looked at you with a small smirk on his face.
“Well, that's one way to do it,” he said.
“Shove off,” you said playfully, throwing the bean in his direction. He dodged it easily, his smile growing.
“No, really,” he said, almost more to himself than you as he scribbled out the word 'cut' and replaced it with 'crush' in his notebook, “you might be better at this than you let on.”
You blushed at the unexpected compliment, backhanded as it was.
“Excuse you, I happen to be fantastic at Potions,” you said, grabbing another bean and avoiding his gaze.
“Right, that's why your cauldron exploded.”
“That was sabotage,” you shot back.
“I was talking about last week,” Severus said cheekily, taking in your flustered expression.
You both went back to your ingredients, eventually discovering that crushing the beans with the flat of a knife was the best way to extract the juice without them jumping. You watched Severus out of the corner of your eye as he measured out the African Sea water, adding it gradually as he stirred the mixture counter-clockwise. The elixir turned a bright blue color, shimmering as if light were being reflected off of it. He continued on with the formula, snapping off a few fluxweed sprigs before adding them and lowering the heat with his wand, hardly looking at the instructions at all.
You wondered where this newfound confidence had come from. Severus was usually so rigid and withdrawn, but right now he looked more at ease than you had ever seen him. A spark was present in his eyes as he worked that you rarely ever saw, and it made you smile despite yourself.
The rest of your potion making process went on without a hitch, and you silently applauded yourself as you watched the other students around you struggle to get their concoctions together. Even Lily seemed to be having trouble, though Mary wasn't really helping other than offering moral support.
You turned back to focus on your own potion, stirring it with the ladle and mesmerized by the way it began to turn a deep plum color. Meanwhile, Severus was cleaning up your shared station, looking over at the brew. His brows furrowed as he examined it.
“Just stir it a bit more,” he said, coming up behind you and placing his hand on top of yours, “the color is still off.”
Your face burned at the unexpected contact; Snape certainly wasn't a touchy person, so the act caught you completely off guard, though you'd be lying if you said you didn't like it. Severus nearly jumped backwards, absolutely mortified when he realized what he was doing. It was him micromanaging more than anything; he was so focused on getting the potion right he didn't even notice he was moving his own body as he gave you the instruction.
“Sorry,” he said, feeling quite possibly the lamest he'd ever felt in his life.
“It's okay,” you said, biting the inside of your lip nervously and continuing to stir like he said. Your light response allowed Snape to relax, his shoulders lowering a full three inches. He'd been certain you would have reacted to his mistake with disgust or repulsion, but you didn't. What did that mean? You were utterly confusing. Despite how well you could read him, Severus was unable to get a read on you at all. If he had been, he would have noticed the tiny smile on your face as you stirred, silently wishing his hand were back on yours.
You and Snape stood at attention as Slughorn peered down at your potion, looking mildly impressed. He reached into his robes, procuring an oak leaf from who knows where, and dropped it into your cauldron. The leaf floated on top of the liquid for just a moment before its edges began to burn. It furled from the unseen heat, folding in on itself and disappearing into the inky depths of the liquid. Slughorn's expression lit up, his impression no longer mild.
“Merlin's beard, it's perfect!” he exclaimed, “in all my years I've never seen a pair recreate this potion exactly as you two have done today.”
You beamed at the praise, your smile only widening as you saw your emotions mirrored in Severus' face, albeit more subtly.
Over the course of your fourth year, you and Snape continued to excel in Potions, receiving much praise from Professor Slughorn and a lot of glares from your fellow students. However, there was something else that continued that year, and that was your increasing interactions with James Potter.
“I just don't get why you even bother with him,” Snape had said to you one day while you were in Potions. Your prank war with James was at its peak, and you were sidetracked that day in class coming up with new ideas to get back at him.
“It's a full on battle now, Sev,” you said, “I can't back down! Now, for my next one I was thinking something along the lines of a callback to one of his earlier stunts. Maybe get him back for tampering with my cauldron at the beginning the year.”
“(Y/n)—”
“I've got a few friends in Gryffindor, and apparently he talks about his prank plans way too loudly in the common room, so I have a head start on this one. They mentioned something about my shampoo—“
“(Y/n),” Severus stressed, finally catching your attention. You looked up at him, embarrassed at you rambling. “Why do you keep doing this?” he asked, “he's just baiting you. You know that.”
“It keeps them from doing anything that targets you, right?” you questioned back.
Severus didn't know what to say at that. It was true, ever since you had declared war on James, he and his stupid friends hadn't really bothered with him at all. Were you doing this for him? He didn't know what to do with the thought.
You were, of course, but you thought it better not to mention that in the last few months this had been going on, you'd also begun to find the rivalry and banter between you and James fun.
“Gather 'round students, gather 'round!” Slughorn beckoned the class over, disrupting your train of thought and putting an end to your conversation, “now, would anyone like to identify the potion in this cauldron here?” He gestured to a shockingly pink liquid that seemed to swirl on its own. Plum and periwinkle smoke wafted through the air above it in delicate spirals.
“That's Amortentia,” Lily said, “it's a love potion that's supposed to smell different to everyone depending on what scents attract them.”
“Right you are, Miss Evans,” Slughorn said proudly, “would you like to tell us what you smell?”
“Cinnamon,” she started slowly, “warm spices, butterbeer, sandalwood. . .” her cheeks reddened significantly, as if she'd made some sort of realization. “Th-that's all.” You stared at her quizzically but she just shook her head. You'd have to ask her about this later. . .
“(L/n),” Slughorn said, “would you be so kind as to do the same?”
“Sure,” you said, stepping up to the cauldron. It was captivating, almost drawing you in physically. “Wild lavender,” you said, smiling, your mother had a garden full of them when you were growing up, “rain when it hits the pavement, and old leather books.” Scents you wouldn't realize until much later all correlated with a certain person.
“Very different scents for very different people,” Professor Slughorn said, “thank you for demonstrating, you two. Now, we will not be brewing this potion today for obvious reasons. It is incredibly dangerous, capable of creating not true love, but unhinged obsession. What we will be doing, however, is studying its effects. . .”
“Strongest love potion in the world, huh?” Evan suddenly appeared at your side, “funny, I could have sworn it smelled just like you, although you wouldn't need a potion to reign me in~”
“Put a sock in it, Rosier,” you said, shoving him away playfully.
“Aw, come on, just one date wouldn't hurt,” he said, “I'm pulling out all my best lines here!”
“That's the best you've got?”
“Ouch.”
Snape couldn't help but glare at the Slytherin boy, not liking how close he was to you. Nice as he seemed, Snape knew how he could really be. He didn't think you'd be such good friends with Rosier if you knew he was knee deep in the dark arts as soon as the sun set on the castle. Then again, Severus wasn't one to talk.
Over the course of the year he noticed that you only grew closer to James, something that bothered him immensely. He was grateful that you had gotten his bullying to stop, but he hated that the way you had gone about it was to turn Potter into a friend. . .
“Merlin, he keeps looking over at you, Lils,” you said.
Lily and Severus looked over to where James sat with Sirius, Remus, and Peter in their corner table as usual. Somehow they always managed to be at The Three Broomsticks at the exact same time as your trio, almost as if they knew you were there. James Potter was, in fact, looking towards your table, until your friends not-so-discreetly turned to look at him and he diverted his gaze elsewhere.
“Idiot,” you rolled your eyes as you took another sip of your butterbeer.
Lily looked between you and James' table for a moment before turning back to you.
“Actually, (Y/n), he's staring at you.”
You looked at her like she'd grown a second head but then began to laugh.
“Is he? Jeeze, what a creep,” you said, but with affection in your voice that wasn't missed by Severus, “it's probably because I saved his ass the other day and he's still reeling from it.”
“Oh,” she said, a hint of what you swore was relief in her tone until she realized what you said, “Wait, you what?”
“Sirius and I were talking in the forest and we got ambushed by Malfoy's motley crew,” you said, “and Potter showed up because of course he did. It was just a little duel, no big deal.”
“What?!” Lily said, concern written all over her face, “they fancy the dark arts, (Y/n), you could have been hurt!”
Severus stared into his drink, unable to look at either of you.
“I'm fine, Lils,” you insisted, “and trust me, I don't think Malfoy's going to be bothering anyone anymore. Just show him a picture of a squid and he'll probably screech like a banshee.”
Lily laughed along with you, partially in confusion, until the first part of your statement hit her with a slight delay.
“Hold on, you were in the forest with Black? And did you just call him Sirius?” she asked, her teasing making your face flush.
“We just. . . figured some stuff out. . . It was nothing like what you're thinking, so drop it,” you grumbled, taking another drink to hide your embarrassed face.
“Whatever you say, (Y/n),” Lily sang, taking a sip of her own drink.
Severus felt jealousy bubble up in him like a disease. He cast his gaze upwards, his eyes locking momentarily with James'. His arch rival rose a cocky brow at him, his gaze unmistakably shifting to you and Lily before staring Snape down again. Severus took a sharp breath to steel himself, that feeling in the pit of his stomach never really going away.
That was the beginning of the end.
Chapter 30: Like a Tall Child
━━━━━━━━━༻✩༺━━━━━━━━━
Remus was alone for the trip back to King’s Cross; not wanting to be stuck with James or Peter who would only pester him. He mulled over his thoughts as his head rested against the window, watching the scenery whip by. But the more he had time to think, it caused more guilt to build; they were only trying to be supportive. They cared so much, still willing to associated with someone like… him. And all he did was push them away. He didn’t deserve real mates like them.
Remus tried to distract himself: knitting, drawing — reading next year’s material, but settled on pulling out his cartridge of cigarettes. About to light one, his attention was drawn to the soft knocking on the carriage door. Lily was there, waving before coming in.
“Hey,” she said, closing the door and sitting down. “I wanted to say bye for the summer.”
He exhaled, now itching for the rush of nicotine while Lily fidgeted in her seat. He already knew why she was there.
“Sev — Snape — came to me a couple days ago…”
It was impossible to escape, wasn’t it?
“They’re mad, his theories… He’s been telling me the entire year and kept going on about this one story… wild story of you and Y/N and the other Marauders…” Lily looked up nervously.
Instead of getting angry, Remus closed his eyes, feeling himself sink further into the cushions, centring his breathing. “What did he say?”
“He’s been telling me you’re a… a...”
“Werewolf?”
She froze at the word, having to take a deep inhale and suddenly looked paler than usual. Remus wanted to jump out of the moving train. “Yes,” she stated, “But I told him to bugger off.”
Lily stopped again, meeting his eyes. “So… It’s true?”
“You can’t tell anyone.”
Lily sat straight, leaning over and even putting a hand on her chest, close to her heart. “I’ll take it to the grave.”
(Letters between Y/N and friends)
To my lovely Whiskers, I hope your summer has been grand so far. Are you sure you can’t spend time with me? It’s been so lonely. Prongs
━━━༻✩༺━━━
Dear Bambi, Unfortunately, I can’t. Mom’s dragging me to New York for the month. Something about being invited to do a special surgery. Said leaving me alone will do no good. I promise to bring you back a souvenir? How are things with Black? Whiskers
━━━༻✩༺━━━
My adoring, wonderful Whiskers, And it hasn’t. My parents are concerned. They’ve been trying to get me to talk about what happened but I can’t. Dumbledore and McGonagall have already started their punishments. He lost over 200 points for next year, got detention for half the year and he can’t try out for the Quidditch team if he wanted to. I wonder what they’ll do next. I love souvenirs! All things Muggle! Yours truly, Prongs/Bambi/James
━━━༻✩༺━━━
July 20th, 1976 Meet me in Times Square at 1 pm on the 8th. There’s a bench outside a bagel store, there’s no way you’ll miss it. Until next time, Matthew G.
━━━༻✩༺━━━
¡Hola! Greetings from Barcelona! My brothers took a few weeks off to spend time with me to come to Spain with my parents! They’re dragging me to a football game later. I heard they call it ‘soccer’ in North America. M. McKinnon
━━━༻✩༺━━━
Y/N L/N, Hello, I hope you’re having a wonderful break. Your letters are the highlight of my day and they keep me busy. So I hate to inform you that you need to stop sending me letters for now. I’m not supposed to be getting any and my parents are going to start confiscating them if I receive any more. I’m sorry. I can’t wait to see you in the fall. R.A.B
━━━༻✩༺━━━
I’m visiting Tuney with my parents in a few days. She moved to London for a clerical job in March and we’re meeting her boyfriend, Vernon! He sounds nice but she’s told me she’s nervous about me and magic around him. Lily
━━━༻✩༺━━━
Petals! I’m sure you’ll be fine! Who couldn't love you? Write back and tell me what happens!
━━━༻✩༺━━━
Whiskers, I’m with my parents up in Wales in their cottage. I was born there before having to move for my Dad’s work. Also, I think I have to get a rabbit. James always told people that I got my scars from a poorly behaved rabbit and if I’m not seen with one soon, people will start to question. Remus
━━━༻✩༺━━━
Does this mean I get to call you Moony now? Professor Moony? Wales? And that’s where that small accent comes from. It bleeds through when you’re concentrating or relaxing. And a rabbit? At least they’re cute! I’m sure you can just Transfigure a book though. Y/N
━━━༻✩༺━━━
Professor Moony? Haha, okay! And really? I never knew. I’m kind of embarrassed now. I’ve thought about that but at this point, I think it would be easier just to have one.
━━━༻✩༺━━━
Oh no! It’s nice! Gives you personality. I think it suits you well How about… Moody Moony near full moons? And Moody Moony Mondays on Mondays.
━━━༻✩༺━━━
Now you’ve gone too far. Bloody fucking Moody Moony? Have you ever heard of Mad-Eye Moody?
━━━༻✩༺━━━
Would you prefer 'my Moony' then?
━━━༻✩༺━━━
Yes, actually.
August 6th, 1976
“Hurry up!”
She thudded down from the top of the staircase, dragging her trunk behind while her mother sped out of the terminal door, flagging down one of the zipping yellow taxis with her luggage in hand.
It was strange, being with her mother again after almost a year apart. She hadn’t come to King’s Cross again, instead sending her a bus fare in anticipation of school ending. She hoped for some sort of recognition, any kind of sign that she was missed but was only given a side-armed hug and delved back into work.
Y/N wondered if maybe she just didn’t want her there, hoping she would get lost and never come back. She only had been on a bus in London twice, therefore almost ensuring that she would get lost and would have stayed lost if she didn’t have extra spare change to use a payphone.
Ignoring the crackle of whispers as she strode to the cab, people blatantly stared at her unnatural coloured hair, as she entered the car, slamming the door shut.
“Where ya ladies off too?” Said the driver, pulling out a map from their car door.
“Cranberry Street, Brooklyn Heights.”
It was a quiet drive, aside from the driver drumming their fingers on the steering wheel at the sound of the Bee Gees blasting in the background. She watched other cabs whipping back and forth, people going on with their days, the dirty streets and building under construction.
“Hey, mom?” She asked, reasoning now was a good time to talk about her OWL results. She’d gotten them mere seconds before leaving their house back in London and she’d been putting off looking at the results until now.
She only grunted, flicking through one of her medical journals, jotting down notes. “I don’t have time right now.”
Y/N sighed, that familiar sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach expanded again. “It’s kind of important.”
“Not now.” She waved her hand and ended the conversation.
Thirty minutes later, the cab came to a stop as they grabbed their luggage and strolled up to the brownstone building they were renting for the month.
━━━━━━━━━༻✩༺━━━━━━━━━
Jet lag got to her as she unwinded lounged until finally getting up from bed that morning as her mom rushed around the house. She frantically was putting on shoes, dressed impeccably sharp, no doubt in hopes to make an impression as her eyes flew across her journal. Her feet were scrambling to the door as she flung her bag over her shoulder.
“Have a good d —” And then the door slammed shut.
She stared blankly at the door for a while and then turned around, getting ready for her day. A daint drum of excitement yet nervousness built up, pushing aside that sinking feeling. Today she was going to see Matthew again.
Having a few hours to spare, Y/N walked around, marvelling at the tall buildings and lights before heading into the heart of Time Square, immediately spotting the bench outside the bagel shop. She sat, waiting for him anxiously. She made sure to wear a hat, covering any sight of hair to avoid weird stares and chatter.
But then a few minutes turned into ten and then twenty minutes later.
Slipping out the letter again to make sure, she re-read it. Time Square, at one, today… near the bagel shop…
“Where y’at?”
Her head lifted as she jumped to her feet and pulled each other into a tight hug.
“Matthew!”
His face nuzzled into the side of her neck, arms wrapped around tight as her face pressed gently into his chest. Eventually, she pulled away - arms outstretched to get a good look.
Matthew Gaplin looked different. His hair, coarse and thick, had grown. He was taller, filled out more, tan skin became even tanner from the beating sun and he filled out.
His smile was large. “S’been so long.”
She gave him a small whack!
“Ow!” He jumped back, “What’s wrong wiv ya?”
“I thought you stood me up.”
“Sorry, doing something for Mom. Had to wait on line forever.”
He looked down bashfully, now staring at the hat. His face made a disgusted look. “It’s disgusting out. Why are you wearing —” Curiously lifting the hat, his lids widened astronomically as Y/N grabbed it, covering her wild hair.
“I told you,” she hissed.
“Right the Potter sport!” He gave a full-body laugh. “Oh come on, I wanna see it again!”
But her hand clamped down on that hat to prevent him from pulling it off. “No! The Muggles keep judging —“
“Muggles?” Matthew’s brows furrowed. “The fuck is a Muggle? Sounds… demeaning.”
“Sorry, it’s what they call No-Majs.”
“Ahh,” and then he moved to loop an arm around her shoulders and continued to walk. “Too good to use ol’American terms?”
“Turned British snob.”
They laughed loudly as he took charge, showing her around the city. There was something so calming amid the chaos of New York. The bustle, low chatter and his enthusiasm made it all the better.
Soon enough, after hours of walking around, they both came to a stop in a large park as they grew hungry. Matthew disappeared for a while, leaving her alone to lay down on the soft grass before returning, holding up a brown bag with two drinks.
“Got us bagels wiv schmear.”
She mumbled out a thanks and took it from him as he sat down on the grass beside her.
“Missed ya, really.”
She shoved him playfully, his head dropping bashfully. “Shut up.”
It stayed quiet for a bit, as they listened to the birds chirping until he broke the silence again. “Ya thinkin’ ‘bout moving back eventually, right?”
“Why?”
Matthew gave her a haughty look, contemplating his words carefully. “Do ya… not know? They’re losing the war.”
Momentary terror gripped her heart but she swallowed it down fast. “Matthew,” her voice dropped, “Please, I want a fun summer… can we not talk about the war? I have more than enough time to worry later."
He wanted to keep talking, worried for his good friend but he refrained, biting down on his lip and nodded stiffly.
“So…” he thought to himself, contemplating how to change the direction of their conversation and fast. “Fess up, what’s been goin’ on over there.”
“Huh?”
“You’re telling me you haven't — what is it called? Kissing?”
“Snogging?”
He smiled. “You’re telling me you haven’t snogged anyone of those rich Old-Majs yet?”
“Nope!” She spoke too quickly and voice was a little too high.
“Liar. Ya going tell me who then?” Y/N looked down, hand going to fiddle with the fem of her clothes while Matthew shook her. “Come on! Tell me!”
“Fine! His name is Sirius Black.”
Matthew's eyes widened in recognition as he sat upright. “You don’t mean the Black family? Gawd! No way!”
“What?”
“And ya don’t even know!” Matthew was full of amusement. “They’re one of the oldest wizarding families out there! Are you still wiv him?”
Y/N stopped, trying to conceal a chuckle. She didn’t have it in her to lie anymore. “No! He almost got me killed.”
“Ha. Ha, very clever. Fine, don’t tell me.”
“You? Anything exciting?”
Matthew snorted. “Fought over a fin if that counts as exciting.”
“You know that’s not what I'm talking about,” she teased.
He abruptly became very serious and it had Y/N sitting up straighter. Matthew breathed in, this time not looking at her but instead at his metal pop can. “I’ve… had a tumble wiv a few... didn’t matter their… genders.”
It took a second for his words to click in but when it did, her mouth fell open and saw his face fall as she pulled him into a tight hug. “I don’t care who you cop, just be safe and have fun.”
He mumbled into her shoulder. “Been rehearsing that since I knew you were visitin’.”
“Love ya, could never judge you.” He tried to look insulted from the babying but prickled with tears before wiping them away quickly.
“Bless ya!”
“You alright though?”
“Now that I know your reaction, never betta. Now, you talk, enough ‘bout me.”
After making sure he was okay, Y/N prattled about Hogwarts. Matthew would pop in a few times, asking her to clarify or ask what words the British used — he often called her his ‘British insight.’ She rambled much about her day, her new friends but made sure to leave out a few details. Matthew became peculiarly silent through most of her speech. It wasn’t like him to not try to speak up, but he looked at her with something she’d only seen a few times prior.
Matthew stared at her for a long time, analyzing with underlying adoration. “What did them Brits do to ya?”
She looked at him, waiting for him to continue. “Ya sound different.” He says calmly, going to sip on his pop. “Talk funny.”
“Tawk funny,” she mocked and earned a shove. “Different? How so?”
“Everything ‘bout you seems different. Y’look happier,” he smiles, although there was a twinge of hurt. “Talk softer, look different — move differently and ya voice sounds different… but the same.”
She takes a bit of her food. “I hope that isn’t a bad thing.”
Matthew smiles gently, sheepish but there. “Not at all.”
She smiled back. Matthew always knew how to make her smile and it felt good, normal.
“Happy looks good on ya.”
She finally sat down, tired from the long day she spent wandering the city. But it wasn’t long until a tapping sound came from the window. Celeste was there, waiting with a letter in her beak. She walked up to her, letting her fly inside and opened the letter.
Got my OWL results. Outstanding in Astronomy, DADA, Charms, Transfigs. Exceeds Expectations in everything else but an Acceptable in Potions. Moony
She re-read that last part. Remus getting Acceptable in Potions? Her attention travelled to the stark white envelope peeking out from the side pocket of her carry-on. She marched up to it, ripping it open and scanned the paper.
Outstanding in Transfiguration, Potions and Herbology, Arithmancy. Exceeds Expectations in everything else except Poor in History of Magic. She cringed at that.
She immediately got up from her seat. Rushing over to the master bedroom, peeking her head in. “Mom?” She said quietly, “Can I talk to you.”
“Didn’t I tell you I was busy?” Her voice cut through. “It’s not the time to be a nuisance.”
A scorching feeling of anger thrummed through her but kept her voice low and steady. “That was a few days ago.”
"My answer didn't change."
Any semblance of calm vanished. “It’s about my OWLs. My future. I need some sort of guidance.”
“I wouldn’t understand them,” she sighed and peered up. There was an odd expression, borderlining on confusion and something else. “It’s not the same. I’m not a… witch like you are. I don’t know how to help you.”
“I’ll make it into No-Maj terms?” Y/N’s voice was tight and came rushing over to where she sat on the couch. And laid out her examination results. “Look, an O is the same as getting an A! It’s the highest grade you can get. And here,” she pointed, “My teacher, Professor Slughorn, invites me to parties because of my work in Potions class. I’m one of his top students.”
She glanced at her mom excitedly but was met with a look of annoyance and slight judgement. But she continued, “A-and in Herbology I'm doing excellent too! I was becoming interested in becoming a Healer. I told you in my letters. It’s similar to being —”
“I’m sorry,” her mother said but it didn’t have any trace of guilt or sorrow, “I’m busy and you’re getting in the way of work — my achievements — that you know are important.”
“Are mine not important?”
A thick, profound silence filled the space between them. Everything about the connotation had her averting her body, feeling the sinking in her chest explode. From the war, traumatic near death experience and her mother's constant aloof nature, it was her cracking point.
Snatching the OWLs results, she walked out the door, shutting it gently before diving into her room; throwing the covers over her head.
All the New-Maj and No-Maj children were told stories of the Boogeyman. To Y/N, it felt comparable to reverting to a small child as she tucked herself into a tight ball. She recalled watching all the other children running up their parents, being roped with large hugs and smiles, surrounded with infinite quantities of love as they left the school playground. She remembered being envious, wanting to have two parents as the images of the Boogeyman drew near.
There was an overwhelming sense to scream — to cry out for guidance as the knot in her stomach grew. Instead of her mother coming to her rescue — to reassure, to give any sense of security or safety while other parents would scare off the Boogeyman or monsters ready to nip at their children’s toes under the bed, Y/N was left in the dark as all sense of relief or love vanished. It left her vulnerable, exposed to the monsters lurking in the dark.
Her mother may have not been physically absent but it sure felt like it.
“Dear Theodosia” - Remus Lupin (Marauders Era)
Theodosia smoothed down the front of her skirt as she wandered through the mass of students saying goodbye to their families on the platform. She'd said her goodbyes at the car, seeing as how her mother and father had to drop Ted back off at his house before work, but she didn't mind. She figured Ted would just embarrass her in front of her friends anyhow. Speaking of friends...
"Dosia!" The girl rolled her eyes a little at the nickname, but couldn't hide the wide grin that spread across her face as she turned to see Sirius Black barreling towards her excitedly.
"I thought I told you to stop calling me that." She said as he pulled her into a friendly hug.
"And I thought I told you that's it was never going to happen." He responded earning an annoyed sigh from the shorter girl. Sometimes she wondered why she hung out with him.
"Have you found anyone else yet?" She asked as he started directing her through the crowd and towards a destination she was unaware of.
"Yeah, Remus and Peter are over here. We're just waiting on James and Roxie." Theodosia nodded, her eyes trailing over the familiar faces as they walked, finally stopping in front of a slightly taller Remus Lupin, and a just as nerdy Peter Pettigrew.
"Pete! Rem!" She said excitedly, pulling them into a group hug. The two boys laughed at her enthusiasm.
"Dosia!" Peter cried out, earning the stink-eye from the girl as she pulled away.
"Sirius corrupted you too? You used to be my favorite." She said sadly earning a terrified look from Peter and chuckles from the other two.
"She's just messing with you, Pete." Remus said, causing Peter to let out a relieved sigh.
"Yeah, everyone knows Remus is Dosia's favorite." Her cheeks turned pink.
"Don't you have something better to do?" She asked, annoyance clear in her tone to hide the obvious blush she was sporting.
"As a matter of fact, I do. Remus, if you will accompany me, I'm off to find my girl." Sirius said, referencing to Roxie Potter, one of Theodosia dorm mates and practically the only girl she hung out with. Sirius grinned cheekily. The three of them looked at him weird.
"You do know she's not really your-" Remus began, but Sirius's grubby hand over his mouth stopped him.
"Just let me have this one." Theodosia and Peter laughed before they all noticed a familiar pair of twins headed their direction.
"What the he*l took you so long?" Remus said in a playfully annoyed tone, as James and Roxie appeared out of the crowd.
"Someone forgot his shoes this morning," Roxie answered with crossed arms. Theodosia laughed at that, but James seemed mildly offended. As he made to reply, a voice from behind them cut him off.
"Roxie!" Marlene, another one of Theodosia and Roxie's dorm mates, screamed out excitedly as she tackled her in a hug.
"Hey Marley," Roxie said, as Lily and Dorcas, the rest of the dorm mates, joined the group.
"Hi-" James waved at Lily with a stupid lovey expression. Lily wasn't having it and looped her arm through his sisters.
"Come on," the red haired girl said, pulling Roxie away from the guys. "We have something to tell you. Theodosia, you coming?" She shook her head lightly. While she liked the girls just fine, her best friends were the four guys she was surrounded by. Besides, who would there be to stop them from doing something stupid if she left them alone?
"I think I'll stay with the guys," she responded, peeking up at Remus before ducking her head awkwardly. There was another reason she'd rather stay with her boys. Remus would be there. She blushed a little again at the thought.
Lily simply shrugged and smiled her farewell at the girl, before pulling Roxie off to find a compartment, Marlene and Dorcas in tow.
"You picked us over the gossip chain? Don't we feel honored." Sirius held his hand over his heart dramatically causing Theodosia to roll her eyes.
"I'm immediately regretting my decision." She commented, earning a chuckle from Remus, but gasps of offense from the other three.
"You cruel cruel woman." James complained, wiping a fake tear as Peter patted him on the back comfortingly.
"Maybe we don't want you to hang out with us anyway." Sirius commented, making Theodosia frown.
"Speak for yourself. I for one don't think I can handle being alone with these knuckleheads for a whole train ride." Remus said, joining the conversation. The smaller girl smiled a little. "C'mon, Theodosia. Let's go before the train leaves without us." Remus put his arm around the girl and started her towards the train.
"Hold on!"
"We were kidding!"
"Wait for us!"
“You Didn’t Have to Stay.” (Oh, Bollocks Ch. 4)
read on ao3
The students of Hogwarts were not afraid of a little weather. They were English, goddamnit, and in addition to their allegiance to stereotypes of their nationality, the biggest Quidditch match of the school year was on. Gryffindor v. Slytherin, the age old rivalry, was a game that could never be postponed lest the faculty be met with an uprising. So, despite the sheets of rain falling diagonally from the grey clouded sky and winds so strong Flitwick’s toupe was nearly lost, the intense match had been allowed and was in full swing.
James of course had no care for the inclement weather; having worked to lead his team to a place where they would absolutely obliterate Slytherin, he was not about to let “a light sprinkle” ruin his chance to triumph over the subpar house. ( “James, it’s pouring rain. Do you need your eyes checked again?” Remus had jabbed that morning over breakfast). He soared through the rainfall, dark hair plastered to his forehead in a mix of hard-earned perspiration and crisp spring rain. His no-mist spectacles (a Marauders invention for playing in unsuitable conditions such as today) guarded his eyes and let him scan the field for his players and the quaffle, with McKinnon and the snitch also dancing in the back of his strategic thoughts. The field was full of action, dulled by the sleet and wind, but he shook it out of his mind and focused in on his next play.
Slytherin’s Keeper Avery was distracted by action at the Gryffindor goal hoops, which James paid little attention to as Frank was a phenomenal keeper, and so he took the opportunity to call on his fellow chasers to execute a Parkin’s Pincer. He whistled the command and Emmeline Vance appeared beside him. Fabian Prewett, who had just caught the quaffle, intercepting Jernigan and Watkins pass, also darted past him, giving a confident grin. James gave Vance a nod before they peeled off into the rainy haze to attack from three sides. As they sped into the three pronged play, Farley whipped past him on the right, her green robes fluttering ominously. Avery was suddenly met in the scoring zone by all three Gryffindor chasers and on instinct he guarded James, assuming he had the quaffle, allowing Emmeline to guard Fabian as he chucked the quaffle through the hoop. Cheers erupted from the red and gold stands, but through the fog the majority of Hogwarts failed to see that Avery was still barreling towards James, furious that their play had been successful. James himself, caught up in the rousing success of his chasing team, did not see the hulking Keeper until he was actively blagging his broom. Avery’s hand wrapped around the end of James’ Nimbus and yanked down, throwing the Gryffindor captain from the broom and sending him plummeting towards the ground. As he fell, his head smacked Macmillan’s boot, protruding obviously from the beater’s green robes, and the last thing he heard was Sirius screaming, “Bloody Hell! Blatching AND Blagging, Hooch! Call it!”
Lily pretended very hard to not enjoy Quidditch. She rolled her eyes each time Marlene and Emmeline headed off to practice, scoffed as Potter tossed that ridiculous snitch around (he wasn’t even a Seeker for Merlin’s sake), and in the stands she always attempted an air of disinterest, displaying very minimal knowledge of the game. In truth though, she loved the sport. It reminded her of the intense European football matches she’d gone to with her father as a child: the raging crowds, the intricate passes, the energetic announcer keying everyone else into the action. And in her quest to support Marls and Emmy, who’d made the Gryffindor house team in 3rd year, she’d taken it upon herself to learn all the rules and regulations of the sport. Several times she’d had to bite her tongue as Black discussed a play’s legality, knowing very well the intricacies of the rulebook but not allowing herself to blow her facade of indifference and correct him. Her friends, who were not so oblivious to her vast athletic knowledge having seen her read the entirety of “Quidditch Through the Ages”, would speculate that her attitude toward Quidditch had something to do with their house’s stud of a captain ( “Really Lily, you ought to just bite the bullet and admit that you love it. We know a certain someone who would just about die if he heard you mention the Hawkshead Attacking Formation…” ) She laughed them off and tried very hard not to think of her former adversary’s sculpted upper body shining with post-practice sweat.
She trudged out here in the freezing rain with Remus, Peter, Mary, and Alice, the other non-players of the 7th years, to observe their friends in the sport she secretly loved. However much she loved the sport though, she refused to believe it made any sense to allow a match to be played in such atrocious weather. Alice had to drag her out of Gryffindor tower and Mary was still convincing her of the benefits of going out in the hellish downpour as they found their seats in the Gryffindor bleachers. Although they could hardly see the players through the sideways rain, the action of the game and the energy of the crowd, amped up to support the intense rivalry, were undeniable, and soon she was cracking a smile and following the teams’ plays as the crowds chanted raucously around her.
She watched Prewett intercept the quaffle and join Emmeline in darting toward Potter and the Slytherin goal posts, and couldn’t help but stand and watch in glee and anticipation as they trapped Avery in the confusion of their Pincer play, the Slytherin starting towards Potter allowing Fabian to score with ease. She shot up with the rest of Gryffindor in triumph but her eye was stuck on James and she squinted to see his victorious grin through the rain. She’d always loved sneaking a glance at the players after an especially good play. As the crowds roar the athletes celebrate their own victories; she’d watch Marlene and Emmeline usually meeting the others' eye and signaling their handshake from first year across the field, James pointing to Sirius and smiling his lopsided grin. Today as she eyed Potter’s victory moment, her smile was quickly wiped as Avery shot toward him in an obvious blatching foul. She jumped up on the bench to try and get a better look and was terrified and angry as the Slytherin blagged the end of Potter’s broom and the captain went tumbling off his broom.
“Are you joking me Hooch, blatching AND blagging! Call it goddamnit!”
Her friends turned toward her, shocked at her quidditch foul terminology, but quickly refocused, now not being the time to address her quidditch vocab as they too squinted through the rain to see James hurtling towards the ground. His head cracked on Macmillan’s foot and Lily sprinted from the stands as the match dissolved into chaos.
James was carted off to the Hospital wing by Pomfrey and Hooch, along with disciplinary help from McGonagall, eventually reigned in the crowd and the two teams, between which a brawl had almost broken out in the sky. Slytherin was given two heavy penalties for Avery’s blatching and blagging, and the keeper was benched, their second string keeper Rosier stepping in for the rest of the match. Sirius could be seen arguing fervently with Marlene as he tried to fly down and follow James, Marlene reminding him of James’ coaching strategy and the threat of a forfeit. And so the game continued, eventually leading to a Gryffindor victory. The win of course was soured by the drenching rain, the contempt for Slytherin, and their martyred Captain lying in the hospital wing.
James woke up nearly 11 hours after the match had ended. Disoriented at the murky white moonlight filtering through the window to the Hospital and the splitting pain in his head, he shifts in the bed, glancing lazily around for Madame Pomfrey. It’s not until he finishes his scan of the room and his eyes land on the sleeping redhead at his bedside that he notices the hand softly but firmly gripping his own. He blinked shakily, trying to rid himself of this obvious fever dream, but the girl of his dreams doesn’t fade away with his grogginess. He lightly squeezes her hand and whispers, “L-Lily?”
She stirred and blinked the sleep away, then became alert and leaned in toward him, hand still holding his. “James! Er- you,- I thought- I only mean-” She took a breath, closing her eyes, and finally released his hand only to tuck her long hair behind both ears. “I thought you might be a goner there. Shame, though, you missed your victory party.”
His fingers flexed as he replied, subconsciously missing the feel of her hand in his. “Er- I, Yeah, but do you really think I’d let Devus Avery and Bart Macmillan’s boot be the end of me?”
She chuckled but looked very worn and worried nonetheless. “Lily?”
“Yeah, James?”
“I’m alright y’know?, S’alright.” His right hand reached out for hers and she eyed his tired and beaten face, before releasing a sigh and taking his calloused hand once more.
“Yeah… S’alright.”
“Lily.”
“What, James…” He tightened his grip as his deep eyes searched for her tired, emerald ones.
“You didn’t have to stay. Y’know, I’d have been alright by tomorrow, and the boys would have skipped the party.” Her eyes fell down, a ribbon of scarlet falling back into her face, and he saw a faint pink tint rise in her freckled cheeks. He wanted nothing more than to stroke her cheek tenderly and tuck that errant lock of hair back behind her ear.
Lily moved slightly closer to him, sitting on the edge of the wooden hospital wing chair and looked up at him, “I told them to go, Marlene had to practically drag Sirius away from you, but they deserve to celebrate. And I was scared to death-” She stopped, the blush stinging her cheeks once more. “Plus, well… what good am I at a Quidditch party, eh?” A feeble laugh followed her attempted joke and she looked down at their still joined hands.
James observed her face carefully, thinking for the millionth time how beautiful and smart and passionate she was, in disbelief that she’d stayed for as long as he’d been out. He reached out tentatively and brushed past her cheek on his way to tuck the stray lock of hair behind her ear. She leaned slightly into his touch and he watched her as she met his gaze.
“Lil.”
His hand rested against her soft skin and she made no move to escape his touch. “Thanks then, for staying. It’s quite nice to, erm, to wake up to seeing you.”
A small smile graced her face as she rolled her eyes half heartedly at this. “I can’t say knowing you aren’t dead is half bad either, James.” Their hand clasped tightened as they looked fondly on eachother.
–––––––––––
“She said WHAT?” came the exclamation from both James and Sirius as Alice, Remus, Mary, and Pete recounted Lily’s outburst in the stands. James had been quickly let out of the hospital wing after Lily’s visit and now, weeks later, he was sat comfortably on the common room couch, Lily pressed into his side as if she’d been made to fit there.
She rolled her eyes as Remus repeated the fouls and violation rules Lily had spewed upon seeing Avery barrel into James, enjoying the look of shock and offense on the two Marauders’ faces.
“I cannot believe you’ve been holding out on me like this, Red!” Sirius’ outrage continued. “All this time and you never once cared to mention that you’re a walking encyclopedia of Quidditch rules and history?!”
James’ disbelief translated less into mock anger and more into a cheeky grin. “Well now you’ll have to come to practices, games, the whole lot. You can be our advisor.”
“Oh was that not already in the girlfriend contract?” His eyes lit up at the reminder of their new relationship and he pressed a kiss into her hair. Their friends wandered away towards a rousing game of exploding snap but the two of them stayed cozy in their spot on the couch.
“Hey, I love you.”
James smiled into her hair as she said the words he’d dreamed of hearing since his 3rd year. “More than Sirius loves Puddlemere United.”
“God I love it when you talk Quidditch to me,” he said mockingly, shifting to look in her eyes with a playful grin.
“Oh yeah?” She smirked, quirking an eyebrow. “Shall I start listing penalties to get you hot and bothered?”
“If you can list all 700 quidditch fouls I’ll have no choice but to propose,” he told her, his smile turning sincere and his forehead knocking against hers. She pressed a kiss to his lips, lingering for a moment before meeting his eyes and whispering:
“Blurting… bumphing… cobbing…”
Albus Potter, Expresso Hogwarts, 5º Ano
A melhor época do ano veio e se foi. Eu adorava a neve e o Natal e todo mundo reunido n’A Toca abrindo os suéteres que vovó Weasley insistia em costurar para cada um de nós, apesar da nossa quantidade numerosa de primos e irmãos. O resto do feriado foi divertido também, passando um tempo em casa com meus irmãos, mesmo que JS de vez em quando fizesse alguma brincadeira com a minha cara. Mas tudo bem, com o tempo aprendi a não me chatear com nada disso, porque era o jeito dele. Papai sempre dizia que cada um de nós éramos de uma forma e que não deveríamos nos aborrecer ou tentar aborrecer um ao outro. E levava isso muito a sério.
Naquele momento, estava terminando de enfiar minhas meias grossas para dormir no frio no malão, as empurrando de qualquer jeito na primeira brecha que encontrei quando a porta se abriu gentilmente e Lily enfiou a cabeça pela porta, os cabelos ruivos dançando em seu rosto animado.
— O pai quer saber se já terminou de arrumar as malas, Al. — Minha irmã me avisou, antes de torcer ligeiramente o nariz, como se estivesse intrigada. — Não acha que está arrumado demais para voltar ao colégio? Quero dizer, ninguém sai de uniforme de casa.
Senti meu rosto esquentar enquanto procurava uma boa resposta para aquilo. Okay, então eu realmente penteei meus cabelos rebeldes o melhor que pude e ao invés de me enfiar em jeans e uma camisa xadrez acompanhado de All Star, coloquei o uniforme de Hogwarts e ajustei até mesmo a capa sobre meus ombros, cobrindo meus sapatos muito bem lustrados. Mas só estava tentando poupar tempo, sabe? Não era como se estivesse esperando encontrar alguém no corredor do trem ou… qualquer coisa do tipo. Abri e fechei minha boca por alguns segundos, procurando por algo que respondesse minha irmã mais nova, porém ela apenas sorriu consigo mesma, antes de se retirar.
— Só pegue leve no perfume, ou vai fazê-lo espirrar. — Sua voz chegou até mim pela porta entreaberta. — E estamos só esperando por você, aqui embaixo.
— De quem você está falando? — Perguntei em direção a porta, completamente confuso com aquela afirmação.
Mas talvez Lily tivesse razão. Tirei a capa e troquei a calça do uniforme pelo jeans escuro, além de enfiar meus pés em um All Star tão antigo que mamãe adoraria dar fim nele. Embolei tudo e joguei também no malão, o fechando com esforço e descendo correndo as escadas para não atrasar mais ninguém. O que me fez dar um tropeção violento que me desequilibrou e saí feito barata tonta no hall, os braços abertos e balançando até achar meu equilíbrio novamente. Ao corrigir minha postura, sorri animado para a minha família, antes de passar as mãos pelos cabelos e me certificar de que estavam mais no lugar possível.
— Tudo pronto. Mesmo. Não esqueci nada dessa vez, tenho certeza.— Informei, me recordando que sempre acabava por esquecer alguma coisa em meu quarto, tendo que receber depois via coruja de mamãe ou papai, o que sempre causava um burburinho na mesa da Sonserina quanto a eu ser… Bem, o adjetivo mais brando era atrapalhado.
Boa parte da minha Casa não entendia o que eu fazia em meio a eles, assim como a maior parte da minha família. Lembro que quase perguntei ao Chapéu Seletor se ele pronunciou direito ou não havia cometido algum erro. Mas bem, eram as cores verde e prata que faziam parte da minha vida desde o meu primeiro ano, quando a mesa no Salão Principal comemorou debochadamente da Grifinória por ter conquistado o Segundo Potter. Imagino a decepção que fui ao não corresponder às suas expectativas ou ao legado do meu pai logo de cara.
Ao chegarmos na 9 ¾, percebi que realmente atrasei todo mundo. O lugar estava lotado e muitos dos alunos já estavam embarcados. Pude ver ao longe Bowker conversando com seus pais. Acenei para um de meus amigos, mas acho que não me viu, pois o assisti balançar a cabeça rapidamente e de modo nervoso, sua postura franzina um tanto curvada. Provavelmente levando um esporro por suas notas medianas, novamente. Sentia muito por ele e queria poder ajudar passando minhas anotações novamente, mas não podia arriscar ser pego de novo. Isso rendeu muitas explicações depois e não queria chatear meus pais. Após subir a mala de Lily, empurrei a minha com a ajuda de meu pai. JS saiu do nosso convívio assim que chegamos a plataforma, mas tudo bem, ele sempre fazia isso. Ao soar do apito de partida, papai me abraçou em uma despedida, logo após a mamãe.
— Tenha um bom período letivo, Al. — Sua voz era tranquilizadora, de certa forma. Meu pai sempre conseguia me deixar mais em paz quando estava nervoso ou ansioso demais, ao menos desde que conseguia me lembrar. Não era o caso, naquele momento, mas eu podia notar que estava mais calmo enquanto escutava os seus conselhos de última hora. E então me segurou gentilmente pelos ombros, me encarando por detrás das lentes de seus óculos redondos. — E não se meta em confusão, se puder evitar.
— Mas eu nunca me meto em confusão… As coisas só simplesmente… Acontecem comigo. — Expliquei, encolhendo ligeiramente os ombros. Aparentemente eu tinha um alvo nas minhas costas para confusões, e invariavelmente eu era a vítima da situação. Mas era difícil de explicar isso depois de ter visitado a sala da Diretora McGonagall a cada seis meses.
— É, eu sei bem como é isso. — Meu pai disse, rindo consigo mesmo, possivelmente se lembrando de seus próprios anos em Hogwarts. — Agora vá, antes que perca o trem.
Então corri, embarcando no Expresso. Me debrucei pela janela e acenei para meus pais até eles sumirem, o sorriso gigante em meu rosto sumindo aos poucos, assim que percebia que estava sozinho naquele trem. Era isso. A animação de retornar para a escola se dissipava aos poucos, enquanto era empurrado e puxado pelo corredor, os grupinhos se fechando em suas cabines. Arrastei minha mala vagarosamente no caminho, procurando por meus próprios amigos, antes de sentir dedos ossudos me segurarem pelo ombro.
— Perdido, Potter? — Scorpius me perguntou, assim que me virei em sua direção. O garoto parecia bem, então ninguém ainda havia feito bullying com ele. O que sempre era bom. Se eu tinha um alvo em minhas costas, Malfoy possuía um daqueles outdoors enormes iluminados por vagalumes enfeitiçados.
— Procurando pela nossa turma, na verdade. — Expliquei, dando aquela espécie de meio abraço que pessoas sem jeito como nós costumam fazer. E então olhei ao redor, procurando alguma indicação de onde ele tenha saído que não de um buraco do chão. — Mas parece que tudo está lotado por aqui… e com pessoas que fazem careta em nossa direção, quando surgimos nos corredores.
— Ah, conseguimos uma cabine lá para trás. Sabe, quanto mais longe do pessoal popular, melhor. — Meu melhor amigo me explicou, meio sem jeito, enquanto eu acenava positivamente com a cabeça. Entendia bem a escolha e concordava com ela. Os populares gostavam de nos azarar de vez em sempre e não seria legal passar por isso logo na nossa volta às aulas. O semblante do garoto pálido se iluminou logo em seguida, como se estivesse se recordando de algo. — Ah! Você precisa ver o que Jenkins trouxe! Não sei como ele pretende mantê-lo escondido no dormitório e alimentá-lo durante o ano letivo, mas…
— Ora, se não são as duas vergonhas da Sonserina.
Polly Chapman era pelo menos uns 5 cm mais baixa que eu e Scorpius, mas mesmo assim a grifana nos deixava ansiosos. Seus olhos castanhos brilhavam em maldade na maior parte do tempo e ela não poderia nunca a oportunidade de nos provocar. Como naquele momento. Como sempre, ela andava em bando e sua horda nos cercou no corredor, todos nos olhando com a cara de quem estava prestes a nos fazer passar alguma situação vergonhosa para a sua diversão própria.
— Olha só, Malfoy. É impressão minha ou você está cada vez mais parecido com seu pai verdadeiro? Quanto tempo até ameaçar todos os bruxos nascidos trouxas do seu ano? — A garota continuou, se aproximando de nós com um sorriso venenoso no rosto.
— Deixa ele em paz… — Pedi em voz baixa, olhando-a sério, mesmo um tanto angustiado com os armários em forma de garotos que a acompanhavam.
— Vamos embora, Al. — Disse Scorpius, tentando dar meia volta e sair dali, mas Polly não nos deixou.
— Pra quê a pressa, garotos? — Ela perguntou, ignorando o que eu havia dito antes, enquanto apertava o cerco ao nosso redor. — Vamos lá, só estamos passando um bom tempo juntos.
— Por aqui. — Apontei para Scorpius, o puxando pelo pulso para nos espremermos entre uma pequena brecha entre Polly e a parede. Porém minha visão periférica captou o momento em que a garota puxou a varinha do bolso e apontou em nossa direção, e acabei por puxar Malfoy do caminho, jogando-o contra aquela muralha em vermelho e dourado. E no minuto seguinte estava erguido pelos tornozelos no ar. — AH NÃO!
Nem uma hora havia se passado e já estava fazendo o oposto ao que meu pai pediu. Existiria algum dia em que isso não seria uma regra na minha vida ou a falta de sorte realmente me amava daquela forma?
