This is a very important clue about season 1 Jamie.

Even when he's being a prick and self-centered jerk to Ted.

He immediately changes when Ted's son is in the room and makes it a special moment for Henry.

We see him consistently alter his behavior in front of children.

Until he doesn't have to alter because he can be this soft all the time.

This is the case with Phoebe. Where he has money to pay her for swear words. Which is a running gag for the audience. But, its another example of how much Jamie has been paying attention.

He doesn't have to posture or be tough. He's no longer drowning in toxic masculinity. He doesn't have his father's voice in his head.

He's been nurtured out of this trap. He has support from his coaches and from the team. He knows Ted supports him. He knows that Beard supports him. He knows that Roy supports him. (And having Roy in his corner really is the kicker to motivate Jamie, given his hero-worship.)

And we get the final piece of the puzzle when we meet Jamie's step-dad Simon. Who is very similar to Ted. And of course at this same time we meet his mother, who is extremely loving and supportive.

Jamie had all this silliness and positivity in him. He just had to be comfortable enough to show it all the time.

It also changes all the times Roy calls him a child. Because he is at heart. Buried under the toxic masculinity is an inner sweet child that relates to children.
