Agustín can feel himself coming awake, feels the weight of Shaun in his arms, the biting chill surrounding him and embedding itself into his very bones. Then, Shaun starts crying and the door of his pod begins to open with a hiss; he didn’t think decontamination would be so cold. His vision is blurry–did he remember to take his glasses in the chaos?–but he can tell there are two people standing in front of his now open pod.

“Is it over?” he asks the vault staff. “Are we okay?”

“Almost,” says one of them, a man, his voice gruff. Agustín squints, unable to make out the bare face in front of him. “Everything’s going to be just fine.”

The other figure, shrouded in a full body suit that obscures everything about them on top of Agustín’s nearsightedness, reaches their arms towards him, towards Shaun, “Come here... Come here, baby…”

Agustín instinctively holds his son closer to his chest, protective over his swaddled form, “No, wait, I’ve got him.”

The suited figure steps forward, puts their hands on Shaun, and Agustín pulls away and raises his voice, “I’m not giving you Shaun!”

The man to his right shifts, and even without his glasses, Agustín knows there’s a gun leveled at his chest and he freezes.

“Let the boy go. I'm only gonna tell you once.”

He doesn’t think, doesn’t move, and he watches in frozen terror as Shaun is taken out of his arms and cradled by the suit. A hoarse, muffled scream breaks through the vault and it’s only as his pod is beginning to close again does he realize he knows who that scream belongs to.

Edith.

The pod closes and the chill seeps in again, forcing him into another dreamless sleep.

Edith comes to like she’s waking up from a hangover; her throat is raw and her muscles ache, but she knows the sensations aren’t from hitting a bottle. As she stumbles out of her pod, everything clicks into place. Everyone in the vault was frozen, strangers found their way in, threatened to shoot her husband, and then took their baby. All just to freeze them again.

She picks herself off the floor in time to see Gus falling out of his own pod, hitting the ground in a heap. He picks himself up, reaching blindly for her and suddenly his arms are wrapped around her and holding her tight.

“Edith,” he rasps into her ear. “Edith, Edith, Edith, are you okay? Are you hurt? What, what was that?”

Edith is still in his arms but he doesn’t seem to notice until he pulls back to look at her, hands still gripping her shoulders like he’s afraid she’ll disappear if he lets go. She can tell he’s searching her eyes for something, anything, worry and fear clear on his face. She knows her own is a blank slate.

“Edith, mi amor, please, talk to me–”

“Why did you let go?”

The question falls from her lips quietly. Gus pauses, brows furrowed.

“What?”

“You let him go,” Edith continues, heat rising through her now. “Why did you let him go? Why did you let them take him? Why did you let go?!”

AGUSTÍN MORENO - SOLE SURVIVOR (AU)

👨‍👨‍👦 FAMILY - what is their family like? what is their relationship to their family? do they have any siblings?

Agustín’s family consisted of his parents (Ricardo Sr. & Brisa), two older siblings (Ricardo Jr. & Silvia), & his (maternal) grandparents (Matias & Luzmila). He had a lot of cousins as well, but those are just the family members he had living in his house as he grew up. The Morenos were very tight knit & always kept in touch when they could. As a kid, though, Gus was the youngest so he often got picked on by his brother & sister lmao. He liked hanging out with his grandmother though & spent a lot of time with her. She encouraged him to go to med school.

When he introduced his family to Edith they took to her instantly & his brother teased him about her being out of his league & all Gus could do was look fondly at her talking to his abuela & say, “I know.”

👖 JEANS - what is their most iconic outfit?

Honestly the basic flannel shirt & jeans outfit from the game would suit him pretty well, just add his glasses, a medic bag, & a headband to keep his hair out of his face. However, I could also see him in the regular minuteman outfit.

🪨 ROCK - do they make friends easily? (if not) why?

Kind of ! Gus is a friendly face & easy to talk to, but he also tends to stumble over his words & sometimes has trouble saying the right thing. He’s the type of person who is internally happy to be there for the most part but doesn’t always feel the need to speak, which tends to put some people off because it can make him seem unapproachable.

🥊 BOXING GLOVE - what is their go-to fighting style (hand-to-hand, short range, long range, etc)?

Long range by far. The only time he’s getting in the middle of combat is if he’s helping someone who got hurt--he prefers being as far away from the heat of it all as possible.

EDITH THANH - SOLE SURVIVOR (AU)

👨‍👨‍👦 FAMILY - what is their family like? what is their relationship to their family? do they have any siblings?

Edith’s family was comparably smaller than Agustín’s, just herself & her parents (Kai & Maeve). Edith was closer to her dad than her mom, as her mother had high expectations for her at a young age & that took a toll on her. Whenever they’d argue, Edith would always turn to her dad for advice & they’d spend time in the garage together where he’d teach her how to fix up cars.

When she introduced Agustín to them, her father got along with him instantly & told her that she picked a good one. Her mother, on the other hand, didn’t dislike him but thought he was a bit too soft.

Fun fact, Edith & Gus named Shaun after Edith’s uncle on her mother’s side simply so I could have some sort of reason for them to choose the name Shaun for their son lmao.

👖 JEANS - what is their most iconic outfit?

I could see her wearing something like the road leathers outfit from the game, but tbh most of the time she’s running around in disguises! She disappears pretty early on in her & Gus’ story & ends up in the Railroad working alongside Deacon, so she doesn’t spend a lot of time in her “own” clothes.

🪨 ROCK - do they make friends easily? (if not) why?

She does not lmao. Edith has a very dry sense of humor & tends to deadpan a lot in regular conversation (i.e. whenever she’s not in the court room). Most people think she’s a bitch & for a bit on her & Gus’ first date he thought she wasn’t into him until she outright said she had a good time with him & would very much like to do it again lol. Post-apocalypse, Deacon is her One Good Friend because he picks up on her sarcasm (plus, she kinda enjoys being his straight man lmao).

🥊 BOXING GLOVE - what is their go-to fighting style (hand-to-hand, short range, long range, etc)?

She’s up close and personal baby ! She prefers knives & pistols & can do a bit of hand-to-hand if pressed. She likes to keep it quick & quiet.

agustín & edith met at a bar where edith was celebrating (by herself) that she passed the bar exam but was sad she didn’t have any friends to celebrate with (law school allowed no social life & her class was cutthroat so no one went out of their way to be friendly to each other). she ended up getting shit faced & the last thing she remembered was someone helping her into a cab & then she woke up at home. she’d fallen asleep in her clothes & found a receipt in her pocket that had a phone number on it, but no name. she tosses the receipt into her bedside table & forgets about it for a few months.

but then one day edith’s walking her dog in boston commons & suddenly this very tall man in glasses is hauling ass over to her with Purpose. she has no idea who he is but he seems to know her & he’s asking her how she is & how being a lawyer is going & it’s not until he sees her completely blank face that he realizes she has no fucking clue who he is because she was drunk as hell & has absolutely no memory of that night.

“oh my god, you have no idea who i am, do you? jesus, i practically carried you to that cab, i—let me start over,” he says. meanwhile edith is kicking herself for probably having completely embarrassed herself in front of this very pretty man when she was shitfaced. what did she say to this man. what does he Know. he introduces himself as agustín but stutters & stumbles that most people just call him gus even though that part of his name isn’t really pronounced that way but he doesn’t mind but anyways he’s rambling. he tells edith she talked to him at the bar they had both been celebrating at (he’d been on leave but he wasn’t a soldier, just an army doctor). he noticed she had looked lonely & offered to let her come party with his friends but she ended up vomiting the moment she got up from her seat & so he helped her get cleaned up & told her he’d get her a cab home & he had given her his home phone number to call him to let him know she got home safely. but of course with her being drunk she didn’t remember any of this.

“i still have your number,” she blurts out. she doesn’t know why she tells him this. he asks why she never called & then surmises that if he were in her shoes he probably wouldn’t call some random number he found in his pocket that he didn’t remember getting. edith thanks him for helping her, as a complete stranger. he tells her it was nothing, but he had been wondering since then if she’d made it home safely. edith thinks it’s sweet that he worried so long.

they catch up, talk for a few hours just walking around the commons. later, when she gets home, edith calls him & tells him she got home safe this time. that’s when agustín decides he’s in love with her.
