Call To Alms ch 11
[Autumn 1959, East Berlin]
Oh, he felt like a million thaler. Ten million marks, a billion rubles, more american dollars than stars in the sky. Gilbert rubbed his nose again as he looked himself in the mirror trailing along the hall at narcissus height. He had slicked his hair back for this, buffed all the medals he still had that hadn't been deemed worthy of melting down after the hearing, dress uniform pressed crisp and wearing dress shoes rather than boots. Pretty white gloves that didn't show a speck of white powder from his trip to the washroom. Gilbert’s head spun on his shoulders at seeing himself so put together again. In front of all those same sons of whores who put him in Vanya's glass coffin. He made a fuckable corpse, he thought, straightening his lapels once more.
His uniform, which was modified from the Stasi grey to have black wrist cuffs and white piping rather than silver. His uniform, which put him squarely in sovereign and militarized like he ought to be, like everyone else--not dead yet. He sniffled and scratched the side of his face before putting his hands behind his back so he would stop doing that. Stop it. Not dead yet, maybe more like back from the dead, like Feliks. Like Jesus. He flinched at movement in the corner of his eye where he thought he saw blond hair and eyes like cut diamons.
"Hi."
"Not now," Gil muttered softly, refusing to turn his head. The apparition said nothing more, but he was sure Templar was smiling before he backed from view. Gilbert listened for the footsteps, and when he heard them, his brow furrowed. When he turned, it was to see only his human assistant striding down the hall toward him.
"Mr. East Germany," black hair and a stern frown, he let his eyes glaze over her so he wouldn't think of anyone she reminded him of. Her kitten heels knocked against the carpet dully. "It's coming to be time now, are you... refreshed?
He grinned through slitted eyes and groaned a little. "Let's go tell the boys who they work for."
"It's not you," she pressed her lips thin. What the hell was her name again? "But you bolstering their image would still send a message. Are you ready?" She seemed unsure, doubt in her voice and the narrowing of her eyes.
"This is gonna fucking rule," he laughed and waved off her concern, walking past her and winking at his own reflection before exiting the hall.

Countries - North America
I currently working on denominations in Califinity, mainly the two biggest ones. However, I hit a snail due to just trying to think up names for it. Like, GRR Martin said he doesn't bother with it for Westeros' names like The North and King Landing, but I am obsessed with namings. If the name doesn't have meaning, or doesn't looks right, I gonna fucking throw myself off a bridge.
Anyways, right now I focusing on North America states because there are a lot more countries than ours today. And I including Central America and the Caribbeans, because it's still part of North America. I will also talk about UNAC, which is a supernational union similar to today EU (EU was already federalized in bhna contemporary) and superseded NAFTA.
United States of Fredoia
I already talked about Fredoia briefly on my last post, only that it superseded the USA. Fredoia inherited the majority of USA lands (there were time they didn't, thanks to Neo-Confedercy). They did lose many lands due to many Native tribes declaring independence (I will elaborate that later).
Like USA before, Fredoia kept it capital city where Washington, DC was, and like Washington state, its name is change (maybe Unionpolis, very original lol). It incorporated Arlington Country and Alexandra City, giving DC a total land area of 270 km². It population should be around 3 million. It administration level will be called a metropolis-state level: it status is equal along with other states (they are represented at congress), but it functions more as a city.
New York City is also a metropolis-state, incorporating counties and cities in its surroundings, including Hudson Country, NJ(yep, Jersey City included). However, it lost being the biggest in the US (being now 18 mil), Metropolis of Los Angeles is bigger, far bigger (24 mil). Also, they rebuilt Penn Station, now called Empire State Central Station.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, voting systems and constituents' representation are different. It is a proportional representation by parties, meaning Fredoia has a multi-party system. The head of state and head of government is separated, and its government structure is a parliamentary republic like Germany.
Thanks due to quirks, immigration, civil wars, geographical barriers, and the fact that this takes place hundreds of years later, Western and Eastern Fredoia have very different cultures compared to today. How people differentiate West and East is by geographic barriers like how we do so with Mississippi River. The Rocky Mountains Range helped differentiate the two regions.
For one, Latines are now the majority in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and other Western states (maybe not Oregon nor Washington). There are already articles that projected this will happen. What is unique due to the mixture of Latine and Anglo culture, especially the language, created a new ethnicity called Californians (Kalifornán written as gender neutral). They even developed a unique language called Kalifornán in its native language (Kalidán if you read my other post for Dune). It's a mixture of Spanish and English, mainly that Spanish superceded English phonetics and any words that were originally French. However, many English words still remain, words like ín (and), islán (island), lán (land), ríf (river), and such. Also, some letters change due to pronunciations, like Spanish J is now Hr (Juan will spell Hruan), Spanish and English Ch, along with English J is now Ç. The C that pronunced similar to the word city is now S (reason why Frinsica has an S now). I gonna write a post for this.
One key factor for Californians' ethnicity is that the majority are Califinitans. The majority of Fredoia Califinitans are located beyond the Rocky Mountains, with exceptional of Upland South-
Tumblr media
-due to The Great Blooming and the Neo War. Almost all of those in Upland are what I called Deitist: believing that Califia is someway a deity.
There is also a new ethnicity/race called Biras (Birace?Biase?). They are the English version of Mestizos. I was thinking that since interracial is more acceptable, and therefore more biracial children, that will be far more biracial in the future. I will think they will be the majority (maybe 1/3?), though they will likely have different groups depending on their background. Sasha Waybright is likely a Biras, however, this will depend on if her one or both her parents are from the Eastern. She probably will view herself as a Mestiza since she will be a Kalifornana.
I also want to create a different post that focuses only on the State of California.
Native American States
After the Second Civil War, many Native American tribes declared independence. How many, I don't know, and to be honest, I don't think it is more than 10. Right now, I gonna create ones from the US since I more familiar with it. There likely are independent First Nation states in Canada, and there definitely is a Mayan state in the Yucatán Peninsula (and maybe whatever the Zapatistas are controlling now).
Kingdom of Hawaii
This was already a no-brainer as there is already a sovereign movement by Native Hawaiians. Honestly, it is rather they would have a monarchy or republic is the question.
This part is going a bit controversial, but once the USA government kinda just collapsed, there was a lot of chaos in the islands. There was a massive exodus, many who were non-native, who went back to the states. However, there was also an expulsion of other non-native, even those were not white, by Native Hawaiians; there were conflicts between two groups who wanted to either remain in the union or become independent, which led into this. Hawaiia also has a right of return for diaspora Hawaiian like many other countries do.
The capital is still Honolulu. They are a member of UNAC. When Amphibia was transported at the Pacific, Hawaii claimed some islands in its southern water that were uninhibited. There are political tension between the and the Kingdom of Newtopia due to this, and also the fucking megafaunas they traveled to the islands.
Navajo-Hopi Nation
Again, a no-brainer, however, the thing that was a bit shockingto me was that there is another tribe reservation inside Navajo. I was wondering why there was a hole in Navajo until I look at a proper map and saw Hopi in it lol
Tumblr media
(Other reservations in the East likely will be incorporated simply because Navajo-Hopi ask them "hey you wanna join us?")
Honestly, it likely they had the most peaceful transition: it isolated thanks to being in a desert (and behind the Rocky Mountains), there is not that many non-native in it to begin with, there are other issue happening for the USA government to worry about, and the most hilarious reason, is that they never publicly declared independence. They decided to ignore DC and acted like an independent country for either half to nearly a century.
I don't know if Navajo-Hopi should be a binational state or not. Binations don't usually last that long, and there are other non Navajo-Hopis that live in the nation. The capital city is Jeddito, an actual place in Navajo that is inside Hopi. Population in the nation should be around 10-15 mil. NH is part of UNEC.
Republic of Lakotah
Likely the biggest Native country if Alaska isn't independent. It is actually based on a proposal state for Lakota.
Tumblr media
It capital and largest city is Omaha (will go by a different name). The city is right on the tip, and it is the most important city as it is connected with the Mississippi River.
Even though Lakotah is meant for Lakota, there are other Native tribes who emigrated to it. There is likely ethnic tension between Lakota and the other non-Lakotas, but I don't think it won't be as awful as other places.
Of all the native states, Lakotah was the most violent; the country situated in five Republican states. The likely reason how they managed to gain independence is due other tribes from the surrounding coming over to help (similar to Bleeding Kansas). And anti-quirks were not as pivotal or heated compared to Whites (especially Republicans), so while Whites were fighting among themselves about quirks, quirks and non-quirks Native were teaming up.
There is a unique architecture in Lakotah, buildings which are called Tipi. Tipi are small, arcological buildings that are meant to house either 2,000 to 10,000 people. They primarily house people without hurting the environment. They are small, 1/4 to the size of a square kilometer. What is unique is that it is a commune, allowing people to share and control resources via democratically. It's the only place on Earth where they have true communism. How Tipi interspersed the lands is unique because I got the idea from Not Just Bike on his video of Switzerland. Lakotah is a sprawling country, where half the population lived in 5 major cities, and the other half lived in Tipi in said city's region or somewhere else. Instead of having sprawling suburban like the USA and Canada, Lakotah is sprawled by Tipi.
Lakotah land area is 200,00 km², with a population of 55 mil., and Omaha population is 10 mil.
It is also a member of UNAC
Country around Oklahoma
I know for a fact that tribes in Oklahoma declared independence too, the only issue is I don't know a name for it. There are multiple ethnicities in Oklahoma, and there likely need to have a lingua franca.
Tumblr media
I still gonna call it Oklahoma. Oklahoma City is the capital, with a population of around 1-2 mil. The country itself is 15-20 mil. Oklahoma is a member in UNAC.
Maya Republic
Mayas initiated their country during the Dark Age/Vigilant Era, like the four other countries I mentioned. And when i said Maya, I mean Indigenous Mayas , not Mestizos who don't identify as such. The Maya Republic controls Chiapas, Yucatán Peninsula, Belize, and Northern Guatemala.
Tumblr media
I don't know where the capital city will be. Either Mérida in Yucantán, Jovel, or Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Population is likely at 30 million. Maya is a member in UNAC.
The majority of Mayas are likely Califinitans, though I don't know if they will be deitists or nondeitists.
UNAC
UNAC, or United North America Confederacy, is what I said before: a supernational union similar to EU. And I mean similar in many ways.
Border between UNAC members are open, there is a singular currency (called Uneso), no visa required for nationals when working in different countries, UNAC Nationals allowed to vote and stand in office in local government, no restrictions in trading, etc. There is not much standard when it comes to infrastructure. However, they do have major projects for UNAC to feel more connected. Almost all railways in mainland North America are electrified (25kv/50hz), all have standard gauge, have uniformed signals, and are connected. It's theoretically possible to take an hsr (450 kph) line or two from New York City to Panama City. But a more preferrable opition is a Maglev (750 kph) line, which goes directly to either city.
The capital city is at Rio Grande mouth, called Rio Grande City. It picked for a symbolic reason: Rio Grande separated Latin and Anglo culture, the treatment of Mexican, and proxy Latines, by the former USA, and picking the capital on the mouth bonds the two cultures together.
The city population is around 20-25 million. Some interesting things i think up is that there is a lot of bodies of water in Rio Grande City, like what it is today-
Tumblr media
-so the city kinda looks like Venice. There are artificial islands similar to I-Island off the coast, though they are much smaller, likely at average of 10-50 km². There is a pro-hero academy meant for UNAC national students. There is also a Triwizard-like tournament for Pro-heros academies, and it is always hailed in the city.
I think the UNAC government is similar to the EU along with Switzerland. It has two legislative, one voted by population, another by it state government. There is also a commission committee that handed making laws, but I too lazy to look it up. UNAC Senate, the one elected by population, has a degressive proportionality when giving each state senator. Let's be honest, Fredoia will fucking out vote every countries due to having the highest population. Mexico comes in second by population, with maybe a population of either 250-300 mil, but even then, adding all the other countries, they still won't outnumbered Fredoia, even if Fredoia did lost many states before. So, small countries (maybe less of 10 mil?) automatically have 5 senators, and the Senate will apportioned senators accordingly. Likely Fredoia only filled 1/3 of the Senate. The executive branch is a council of each countries head of state and government, like the EU.
Amphibia and the Boiling Isles
Amphibia can't be a member due to it government and representation. Even though Amphibians could elect local leaders, non-Newts can't vote for the supreme legislative body, and the kingdom is a semi-constitution monarchy. Like, UNAC is okay with Hawaii being a monarchy (if Hawaiians choose it) as it government is very much a constitution monarchy. The monarch has restricted power, similar to the British monarch. Andrias has far more privileges that will make UNAC very uncomfortable. There is some trade right between the two, and the Amphibians do have an easier time getting a visa (this I imagine how Hop Pop and two kids manage to enter California).
For BI, it is complicated. BI is situated in the middle of the Atlantic, and therefore does not feel connected to North America. Actually, there's likely tension between UNAC and BI (and likely other countries, especially EU and West Africa countries). Many of the islands block shipping lanes, so conflicts between BI and other countries are likely to happen. Doesn't help they are also do magic and far more non-humanoid like.
Not only that, but BIS are very isolationist. Rarely do they connect with the outside world. Even when Belos becomes emperor, it didn't really change its isolational policy other than scaring other countries because now they are united and far more powerful.
There's nothing else much to talk about. In the EU, they have a similar international pro-hero academy for EU national students to learn together -this is the premise for snk/bnha fic, where 104th class are a pro-hero class (Eren was a non-quirk until his father gifted him one, and not only Ymir (freckles) is from a famous and loving pro-hero parents, but she also in an arranged marriage with Historia, her childhood best friend).
Anyways, that's it.

Have you heard of the Wannsee Conference? Most have not. I am ashamed to admit I was unfamiliar with it until a couple of years ago when I read an article detailing its significance in All Israel News. Watching Biden retreat from our only Democratic Middle East ally, Israel, reminded me of the Wannsee Conference, so I went looking for, and have included several quotes from, that 2022 story, “Speaker at Wannsee Conference Urges Christians Must Do More to Combat Resurgent Tide of Antisemitism.”
You could say Wannsee was the birthplace of Hitler’s Third Reich, at least the ideology behind it. The attendees predate Hitler’s raging speeches, invasions, and iron fist control of Germany. The Wannsee attendees laid the groundwork for the fate...

After Soviet’s sudden death, East Germany took the opportunity to reunite with his brother. In prior to his arrival, East mailed a message to West by a Weimar eagle. However, he wasn’t aware he was being followed until he was shot.
Wounded on his journey, he encountered Poland but she refused to help him so he had to continue bleeding. East made it to Germany’s territory but unfortunately couldn’t walk anymore and his “hunter“ arrived. East spent his last moments alone with the hunter laying in snow.
Moments after East’s death, a Bald eagle arrived to West with a letter declaring East’s passing but the Weimar eagle never arrived.

another ch headcanons post.. this ones about how aging works
countries aren't born through natural means, moreso spawned? like countries just are like man. what if i had a kid and the country just spawns LOLLL. anyways countries come out not at like newborn stage moreso looking like 5-6 year olds?
how countries age is dependent on the country itself and events that affect them during their childhood. the average time for a country to grow up is ~50 years but sometimes its way faster. take japan for example: she was only created in the 1920s but was already a late teenager by the end of world war 2. she became an adult once the new constitution was signed and put into place. east and west germany, despite their odd beginnings, had very similar timestamps as this. eg, however, did age rapidly a few years during the east german riots in '52. due to some weird thing west germany did too.
birthdays are weird.. basically the country chooses an important date but theres usually multiple dates to choose from. germany celebrates his on unification day, poland celebrates hers on her independence day, and lithuania celebrates hers on the day she was finally free from the ussr. the countries don't count age so they just celebrate for fun.
while countries don't have actual ages i do have like, a few rules set in place about their romantic stuff just so i dont feel weird about it. basically, if a country knew another country during their childhood, it'd be weird to date them. and not in like the offhandedly saw them once during a un meeting thing i mean like actually talked to them knew their name stuff like that. so like if the us were to date kosovo when they were an adult that would be weird since UHMMM the US knew kosovo quite well as a child. ykno.
this rule can be bent with fusions since they're treated as different people than their predacessor, especially mergecon fusions. co-con might not date people they knew as children since all conscious are still separate so it'd be like the rule broken in a sort of reverse way. most countries still follow the base rule however, if you knew a fusion part before the fusing you'd rather not date them while fused with someone else.
hope that makes sense seeya feel free to ask questions

USAF F-16 fighter pilots explain what a dogfight against the MiG-29 Fulcrum is like
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/26/2023 - 12:06 in Military
The first U.S. Air Force F-16 pilots to perform simulated air combat with MiG-29 jets explain what the near air combat against Fulcrum is like.
The MiG-29 was designed in response to a new generation of American fighters, which included the F-15 and F-16. Designed as an air defense fighter, this dual-purpose aircraft also had a ground attack capability. The task of producing a "frontal" or tactical fighter for the Frontline Aviation Regiments of the Soviet Air Force went to the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau (MiG OKB).
Tumblr media
Employing all the available technical data on the most advanced Western aircraft, the MiG designers began working on the MiG-29 in the early 1970s, and the first prototype made its first flight on October 6, 1977. U.S. reconnaissance satellites detected the new fighter in November 1977, and NATO gave it the designation of "Fulcrum".
Production began in 1982 and deliveries to Frontline Aviation units began in 1983. In comparison, the first USAF operational F-15As arrived seven years earlier, in 1976, and its F-16As entered operational service four years earlier, in 1979.
Even so, the MiG-29 represented a formidable threat to Western pilots.

Among the countries that received the Fulcrum was also East Germany. The MiG-29 of the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) were also kept in service after German reunification and were used not only for the national Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) service, but also as an opposing aircraft during NATO air exercises, where the MiG-29 showed its tremendous air-to-air combat capability.
The first Western fighter unit that had the chance to face Fulcrum in simulated air combat was the 510th Fighter Squadron (FS) "Buzzards" belonging to the 31st Fighter Wing (FW) of Aviano Air Base in northern Italy, which flew against the MiG-29s of the Jagdgeschwader 73 (JG 73) of the Luftwaffe in May 1995 during

(Exact date unknown)
As reported by Captain Mike McCoy, one of the F-16 pilots of the 510th FS who flew against the MiG-29 of the JG 73, the most impressive aspect of the Fulcrum's performance for American pilots was its low-speed maneuverability combined with its helmet-mounted vision system.
“In a low-speed fight, fighting Fulcrum is similar to fighting an F-18 Hornet, but Fulcrum has a thrust advantage over Hornet. An F-18 can actually twist your nose if you get into a fight at low speed, but you need to lose altitude to recover energy, which allows us to stay on top of them. MiG has approximately the same nose authority at low speeds, but can recover energy much faster. In addition, the MiG pilots have that forty-five-degree cone in front of them, in which they can shoot an Archer and shoot you down."

But, as McCoy explained, even if the helmet-mounted vision system showed a formidable threat, it was not insurmountable.
"Some of his abilities were more perverse than we originally thought, we had to respect the aim mounted on the helmet, which made our anchoring decisions more difficult. In other words, when I approached, I had to consider that vision mounted on the helmet. Every time I got close to the nose of a Fulcrum, I threw flags to defeat an Archer who came out of his grid."
Impression also confirmed by Lieutenant Colonel Gary West, another Viper pilot and then commander of the 510th.

"Before coming here, some of our pilots may have thought of the aim mounted on the MiG helmet as the end of everything for a close fight. We found out that it is not as lethal as we expected. We find some positions - particularly in a circle shot or a high-low shot and in a low-speed fight - where a Fulcrum pilot can look up forty-five degrees and shoot while his nose is still off. This ability changed some of the pilots' ideas about how they should approach a MiG-29 in a neutral fight. Below 200 knots, the MiG-29 has incredible ability to point the nose to below 100 knots. The F-16, however, takes advantage in the regime of more than 200 knots. At higher speeds, we can go over them to go vertical. And our conversion rate is significantly better. Being patient and keeping the speed in the air around 325 knots, an F-16 can carry the MiG-29 in your nose. But the pilot must still be careful with the shooting in a circle with that screen mounted on the helmet."
McCoy and two other USAF pilots had the chance to fly in German Fulcrums and explained some of the various limitations of the MiG-29.
Tumblr media
"Their visibility is not so good, their disadvantage is a real advantage for us. F-16 pilots sit at the top of the cabin. All the MiG-29 pilots who sat in our cockpit wanted to look around with the canopy closed. They were impressed that they could turn around and look at the tail and even see the engine can. In addition to visibility, I expected better performance in the curves, the MiG-29 is not a continuous 9G machine like the F-16."
Statement also confirmed by Captain Michael Raubbach, then Fulcrum pilot of JG 73.
"Our visibility is not as good as that of an F-16 or even an F-15. We can't see directly behind us. We have to look a little to the side to see behind us, which does not allow us to maintain eye contact and an ideal elevation vector at the same time. This deficiency can be a real problem, especially when flying against an aircraft as small as the F-16."
Tumblr media
The lack of the continuous capacity of nine Gs of the Fulcrum, instead, was due to the nature of the specification that gave life to the MiG-29, as explained by Captain Oliver Prunk, then operations officer of the JG 73. "The aircraft was not built for hand-to-hand combat, although it is aerodynamically capable of it, the East Germans flew as a point defense interceptor, such as a MiG-21. They were not allowed to maximize the performance of the plane, to explore its capabilities or their own capabilities. The sorties lasted about thirty minutes. The plane was designed to climb, unlease the tank, become supersonic, fire your missiles and return home."
Other limitations were experienced when the fuel tank of the central line was loaded by the aircraft, such as the inability of the fighter to fly supersonic with the tank coupled, an operational scenario that also limited the MiG-29 to 4Gs when the tank had remaining fuel.
However, despite these shortcomings, Fulcrum remained a formidable opponent to fight, as reported by McCoy. "The experience confirmed what I knew about the MiG-29's ability to turn and fight in a dogfight. It's an amazing plane in this regime. The admiration, however, disappears after the first turn. The biggest adrenaline rush was to get to that point. After that, I started evaluating it as a weapon."

McCoy was repeated by West, who said that the glamour of the Fulcrum could distract the pilots when they saw the MiG-29 for the first time. “When Western pilots merge with a MiG for the first time, they tend to look at it with admiration, instead of flying their jets and fighting, they fall in love with this Soviet-built aircraft about which they spent their lives learning. The pilots lose this sense of admiration after a first meeting. It's no longer a potential distraction. They'll know what kind of fight to fight and exactly where they might be in trouble. No one can learn these things by reading reports. The air-air fight is a perishable skill. But the lessons we learned here will not be forgotten. These pilots will know in the merger exactly what they are facing. They will have more confidence. And they know they are flying a superior aircraft in maneuverability, power and avionics."
West concludes: "When our pilots arrived here, they almost stumbled because their eyes were glued to the ramp and those MiG-29s. After a few days, however, these MiGs became like any other aircraft. And that's how it should be."

In Ch 4 of Corrie ten Boom’s autobiography, The Hiding Place, she gives an account of a German apprentice at her family’s watch shop who had been a part of the Hitler Youth, which gives a peek of the indoctrination levels already in place by 1939.
And while Haarlem and the rest of Holland strolled and bowed and swept its steps, the neighbor on our east geared for war. We knew what was happening—there was no way to keep from knowing. Often in the evening, turning the dial on the radio, we would pick up a voice from Germany. The voice did not talk, or even shout. It screamed. Oddly, it was even-tempered Betsie who reacted most strongly, hurrying from her chair and flinging herself at the radio to shut off the sound.
And yet, in the interludes, we forgot. Or, when Willem was visiting and would not let us forget, or when letters to Jewish suppliers in Germany came back marked “Address Unknown,” we still managed to believe that it was primarily a German problem. “How long are they going to stand for it?” we said. “They won’t put up with that man for long.”
Only once did the changes taking place in Germany reach inside the little shop on the Barteljorisstraat, and that was in the person of a young German watchmaker. Germans frequently came to work under Father for a while, for his reputation reached even beyond Holland. So when this tall good-looking young man appeared with apprentice papers from a good firm in Berlin, Father hired him without hesitation. Otto told us proudly he belonged to the Hitler Youth. Indeed it was a puzzle to us why he had come to Holland, for he found nothing but fault with Dutch people and products. “The world will see what Germans can do,” he said often.
His first morning at work he came upstairs for coffee and Bible reading with the other employees; after that he sat alone down in the shop. When we asked him why, he said that though he had not understood the Dutch words, he had seen that Father was reading from the Old Testament which, he informed us, was the Jewish “Book of Lies.”
I was shocked, but Father was sorrowful. “He has been taught wrong,” he told us. “By watching us, seeing that we love this Book and are truthful people, he will realize his error.”
It was several weeks later that Betsie opened the door from the hallway and beckoned to Father and me. Upstairs on Tante Hand’s tall mahogany chair sat the lady who ran the rooming house where Otto lived. Changing the bedsheets that morning, she said, she had found something under his pillow. And she drew from her market satchel a knife with a curving ten-inch blade.
Again, Father put the best interpretation on it. “The boy is probably only frightened, alone in a strange country. He probably bought it to protect himself.”
It was true enough that Otto was alone. He spoke no Dutch, nor made any effort to learn, and besides Father, Betsie, and me, few people in this working-class part of the city spoke German. We repeated our invitation to join us upstairs in the evenings, but whether he did not care for our choice of radio programs, or because the evening ended as the morning began, with prayer and Bible reading, he seldom did.
In the end, Father did fire Otto—the first employe he had ever discharged in more than sixty years in business [sic]. And it was not the knife or the anti-Semitism that finally brought it about, but Otto’s treatment of the old clock mender, Christoffels.
From the very first I had been baffled by his brusqueness with the old man. It wasn’t anything he did—not in our presence anyway—but what he didn’t do. No standing back to let the older man go first, no helping on with a coat, no picking up a dropped tool. It was hard to pin down. One Sunday when Father, Betsie, and I were having dinner at Hilversum I commented on what I thought was simple thoughtlessness.
Willem shook his head. “It’s very deliberate,” he said. “It is because Christoffels is old. The old have no value to the State. They’re also harder to train in the new way of thinking. Germany is systematically teaching disrespect for old age.”
We stared at him, trying to grasp such a concept. “Surely you are mistaken, Willem!” Father said. “Otto is extremely courteous to me—unusually so. And I’m a good deal older than Christoffels.”
“You’re different. You’re the boss. That’s another part of the system: respect for authority. It’s the old and the weak who are to be eliminated.”
We rode the train home in stunned silence—and we started watching Otto more closely. But how could we know, how in Holland of 1939 could we have guessed, that it was not in the shop where we could observe him but in the streets and alleys outside that Otto was subjecting Christoffels to a very real, small persecution. “Accidental” collisions and trippings, a shove, a heel ground into a toe, were making the old clockman’s journeys to and from work times of terror.
The erect and shabby little man was too proud to report any of this to us. It was not until the icy February morning that Christoffels stumbled into the dining room with a bleeding cheek and a torn coat that the truth came out. Even then, Christoffels said nothing. But running down to the street to pick up his hat, I encountered Otto surrounded by an indignant little cluster of people who had seen what happened. Rounding the corner into the alley, the young man had deliberately forced the older one into the side of the building and ground his face against the rough bricks.
Father tried to reason with Otto as he let him go, to show him why such behavior was wrong. Otto did not answer. In silence he collected the few tools he had brought with him and in silence left the shop. It was only at the door that he turned to look at us, a look of the most utter contempt I had ever seen.
