i think this is the first time we've seen sabo (as an adult at least) use a formal register for anybody other than dragon? he uses polite verb forms with cobra!

For once, I'm speechless, Oda outdid himself in this chapter.
Sabo revealed himself as an absolute badass by assaulting the Gorosei in a one shot.
Not everyone has the guts to do it. It seems he mixes Ace's favorite move and adds some new ones.
It's his own way to remind them what they did to his brother and a way to honor his memory as well.
He then attacks Imu without fear. That man is really something else.
Imu is at the top of the world, Sabo has just met him/her, he didn't know about his/her existence.
And yet like Luffy, he doesn't display any kind of fear or hesitation. He just wants to protect Cobra.
Cobra's and Sabo's teamwork is impressive. It's sad they had to meet under such circumstances. They would get along greatly!
Can we also talk about Cobra? That man has the guts to talk about a very secret subject.
Can we talk about his ancestor, Nefertari D. Lili? Can we talk about Vivi? Badassery runs in the family!
He sacrifices himself in order to protect Sabo, he wants to unleash the truth to the world.
And believe me, he will be remembered pretty much like Pedro with Carrott.
Actually it also makes me sad for Vivi, Luffy and their friends. Ace died to protect Luffy, Cobra died to protect Sabo.
Let's make sure Dragon will fight to honor the memory of such a great king!

Chapter 1085 — The death of Nefertari Cobra
And we are back!
Cover story is adorable, although Oda’s sketchy style renders it almost unreadable. Franky is but a mess of lines, especially around his legs and it's difficult to see if its sweat, snot or tears streaming down and around his face.
Please, Oda, please let someone else do the inking.
Tumblr media
Yes, yes, nice reminder that king Cobra is very ill indeed, so although his death is tragic, he's still an old, sick man.
But I like the way the Five Elders have –both metaphorically and physically– moved out of the way, so Cobra can get his answers.
Tumblr media
If it's Donquixote, I will throw something. Yes, no idea to introduce new characters/major Celestial families this late in the series, but still. It'd only be a nail in the "family is destiny"-coffin.
Tumblr media
a) I really enjoy the perspective on this panel, literally placing Imu at the top of the world
b) The lady doth protest too much, methinks
Tumblr media
So either Lili either did something that resulted in the Kozuki clan to make the Ponegplyhs, or she didn't do something that enabled them to release the Poneglyphs onto the world. So she either actively gave them information or was lack in hindering them from obtaining it.
Iiiinteresting. Especially…
Tumblr media
Since there's a D involved.
Does this mean that Vivi is actually Nefertari D. Vivi and has had the same "Let's not talk about our secret names"-thing going on as Law?
Tumblr media
I really like the layout here (although the art, Oda, the art…): Cobra is shaded, already standing in the shadow of the gate of death, while the Five Elders are reduced to their instrumental purpose as Imu's executioners. Great layouting!
Tumblr media
And more great layouting! Imu’s powers are terrifying, aren’t they?
So, Imu's power can't be Darkness, since that's Blackbeards. Shadows is still Moria… Is it Void? A lot of ways to say "hello darkness, my old friend" in this happy-go-lucky pirate manga…
And speaking of…
Tumblr media
…no matter in how light colours you dress, you'll always be black-hearted assassins for me <3
I am begging you Oda! Let. Someone. Else. Do. The. Line. Art.
As I've said previously, the background's crisp lines can save a lot, as we see in Vivi (she is kind of blurry and sketchy while the ropes, chair and Pangea castle in the backgrund are fine), but when we zoom in on her face the hasty work becomes painfully obvious.
Jabra's coat shadows get lost in the folds and if I didn't know it to be Blueno, Kumadori and Fukurou, I couldn' tell. And Kalifa, my girl… her elegant lines and disparaging looks from Water Seven / Enies Lobby have been transformed into some sort of befuddled school teacher. No, it doesn't help that you try to put her in her characteristic pose. It's much less efficient when you can't tell what her expression is due to sloppy line work.
Tumblr media
a) I always forget how completely massive Wapol is, but here he is put into nice perspective thanks to Jabra and Vivi
b) How are you elite agents if you let your hostage get kidnapped in front of you?
c) The sub-plot of Kinderella accepting the mistress but getting shocked at a life on the run is priceless.
Great information exchange! More lore dump! I am well fed and will rest peacefully.
Interesting tidings, although I am sad for Cobra; he was a good guy.
I give the chapter the will of a D and cunning of a fox.

Hey everybody! I’m here to tell you Imu does not transform in chapter 1085.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are five shadowy, silhouettes none of which are Imu. There are a sixth big pair of eyes behind the five gorosei, but that could just as well be for dramatic effect from Oda.

I thought Law was going to be the only surprise D. of the series but now we’ve got Vivi, too, though I’m not upset about that since more Vivi content is always appreciated and aside from Rouge (and now I guess Vivi’s ancestor) we haven’t gotten any women officially having it so if anyone gets that designation, I’m glad it’s her.
Though if Vivi thinks that Sabo did indeed have something to do with her father’s death, she probably wouldn’t be willing to talk to him unless Luffy was there as well so I feel like all of them are heading for a reunion sooner rather than later here…

Spoiler One Piece 1085
I am SHAKING!
Lili was a spy INSIDE the govt and she somehow caused the poneglyphs to be scattered as messages to the future. 5 elders are *gesturing vaguely* nightmare fuels?? bc wtf even is that?! Imu is fk ancient like mf literally recalled what Lili was like and doing like it was last week instead of 800 fk years ago?! and wait did Sabo not hear what they're talking about??
Tumblr media
When Cobra recited Lili's letter and dropped the Nefertari D Lili... I feel chills down my spine and for a fraction of second I was so scared for my life as if Imu could get me anytime just by knowing that information and I had to look around to make sure that I'm fk safe wtf! (ODA I DIDN'T SIGN UP FOR THIS LEVEL OF TERROR! Jk tho! LEMME IN ON IT!)
Recalling this panel from ch 218 makes me wonder would any of this still happen if Cobra and Robin didn't have that conversation?
Tumblr media
And now I'm really so fk scared for Robin's life, like I've never actually fully understood the weight of her knowledge and what she's capable of doing to the whole world until now! The way I see it (at least for now) Robin is the number 1 enemy to the govt. Yes there's still Rayleigh and Crocus and who knows who else that know about the truth but they've been dormant for decades and no real reason for them to start blabbering about it now. Yes Luffy as Joy Boy is a real fk threat to the WGO but without Robin we'd never actually find out the whole truth (again it's just for now since Pudding might awaken her 3rd eye anytime soon). The WGO seeing Robin as a world wide criminal and threat has never felt so fk real and made sense. Also the poneglyphs surely contain informations that are undisclosed to even the WGO right? Like about idk their ancient enemy the D clan and any plan to defeat the WGO in the future if they have any?? My GOD! No wonder they branded her an international criminal at the age of fk 8 years old! ROBIN PLEASE BE SAFE! LUFFY PLEASE PROTECT HER AAAAAAA

Note
Hello! With the recent revelation in Chapter 1113 by Vegapunk, I was wondering if you think this is what Cobra was saying in the speech bubble that gets blocked in chapter 1085? Something like “sinking world”?
Are there any clues for this in the original Japanese?
Tumblr media
oh, good question!! so, here's what this section looks like in japanese. the first phrase appears to be 歴史の本文を守りなさい/ponegurifu wo mamorinasai, "protect the poneglyphs." and then there's the big obscured bit, of course, and then we can see the end of the sentence, 世界に夜明けの旗をかかげ/sekai ni yoake no hata wo kakage ("bear/raise the flag of dawn against the [...] world").
what's missing is indeed some sort of phrase preceding/describing the word 'world'. i know that in the english translation they did this as "...ING WORLD". we can see that it probably ends with the sounds ~りく/~riku, but what it might be beyond that is hard to say. there's a few situations where a word might end with ku in japanese; it could be a verb with a ku dictionary ending (like tsuku, 'to be attached') or it could be an adverb version of an adjective (such as atarashiku, 'newly', or ookiku, 'in a big way').
i can't really think of an obvious way to say 'sinking' that would fit what we have here- at least, neither 沈む/shizumu nor 沈んでいる/shizundeiru fits. but i do think it's definitely plausible for the sinking world to be what cobra is describing here, one way or another.

Chapter 10 1085 words
It took all of Razorscale’s willpower not to snap at the orcs to paddle faster. He knew that this was the best speed he would be getting from anyone, short of going ahead on the flying carpet, but that didn’t help his patience. Instead he focused on strategies, mentally going over every possibility he could think of and sharing the most likely with his apprentice.
By the time the afternoon sky darkened into evening, and the next village appeared on the coastline, the plan had solidified into two things. Confine the offending mages, and perform the counterspell. The method of accomplishing the first would depend on many factors, but the second would be done by the apprentice. Razorscale had spent a solid hour going over the incantation and power work that he had put together during his long carpet flights.
It was simple enough for someone with Razorscale’s centuries of experience. He was gambling a lot on the apprentice’s ability to get it right on the first try, but it was a gamble that he felt confident in. And he would be there to advise.
The boats glided toward shore amid the raucous singing of the orcs, who had mastered a new song courtesy of the minotaur woman. It revolved around stomping in time. Razorscale was glad to be returning to land.
Less glad to have their forward momentum stopped, but he’d take what he could get.
Landing and disembarking were chaos. This village was a harpy one too, though with a different layout that Razorscale didn’t care to examine in the fading light. There were dozens of harpies crowding the beach to greet the orcs, who were loudly happy to see them, spending only a cursory amount of attention on their passengers.
Razorscale clambered out of the boat, blanket bundle in hand and apprentice close behind. They took up a position out of the way but close enough. One by one the other temporary humans found them.
The pixie’s clothes had dried in the sun, though by the way he carried his shoes over the pebbly ground, those still had a ways to go. The minotaur was helping the centaur, who had long since run out of pixie dust. The harpy was inspecting the village and pretending not to notice them stumbling behind her.
“What’s the plan?” she asked Razorscale. “The town hall is smaller here, and may not have space for sleeping.”
The centaur looked up in alarm. “Wait, we’re staying overnight? Aren’t the orcs sailing farther?”
“Not in the dark,” the harpy told her.
“Maybe we could sleep in the boats,” suggested the minotaur. “They’d probably let us.”
“Or,” Razorscale said testily, “We could keep moving instead of wasting a whole night.”
They argued with him. Apparently they were all overly fond of sleeping, and afraid of what might hide in the dark. A prey mindset. No amount of insisting that predators would steer clear of even a small dragon swayed their fear, nor did his certainty that he could handle a hypothetical thief.
“We could trip over something,” said the pixie. “I don’t think I’ve ever walked in the dark for long.”
Razorscale rolled his eyes. “You will be riding the carpet with her,” he said, pointing at the centaur, who wobbled in place despite the minotaur woman she clung to. “No one else has wet shoes or other petty problems. There is a moon out. We will be fine.”
They were still reluctant, exasperatingly so, and the conversation went in circles until Razorscale’s apprentice spoke up.
“Mentor,” they said. “The pixies are back.”
Razorscale followed the pointed talon, and saw what looked like a cluster of colorful stars moving in the distance. He tried not to mourn his dragon vision as he squinted. “So they are. Good news for everyone.” Especially me.
“Hooray, I knew it!” the pixie exclaimed, waving his wet shoes around happily. “I told you so. I told you they’d catch up.”
“Yes, good job,” Razorscale said. “You can be in charge of flagging them down before they start talking to the orcs.”
The pixie agreed readily, dropping his shoes to jump around wave his arms. Fortunately for him, the ground was all smooth pebbles here, with none of the bigger rocks to trip over.
Razorscale gathered up a few of the better pebbles in case they needed any more glowstones. He had them all hidden away in the apprentice’s pack by the time the pixies descended in a brilliant multicolored swarm.
Utter madness. Unprofessional. Razorscale was glad they had paid up front, and only needed to accept the two smaller bags of dust that the colorful maniacs had brought for the centaur and the harpy. Then just as quickly, the pixies swept off to deliver the rest of their payload to the orcs.
Razorscale deliberately turned his back on that exuberant interaction.
The centaur was already rubbing glittery dust into her hair, lifting off the ground with a beatific smile. The harpy was conserving hers.
Razorscale pointed at the bag. “Go ahead and open it up,” he said. “The carpet can only hold two.”
There was another token resistance to the idea of leaving now, but they had no leg to stand on and clearly knew it. Soon enough they all were agreeing with Razorscale (finally!) and hashing out the details.
The centaur and the harpy would fly with the pixie dust. The minotaur and the pixie would ride on the carpet, with the bulk of the supplies. The apprentice would fly under their own power.
“What about you?” asked the pixie. “Are you gonna ride—?” He glanced at the apprentice. “No offense, but you seem a little small for passengers.”
“No,” Razorscale said. He pressed a finger to his side, where the speed charm was belted under his shirt. The motion was unnecessary since the charm already touched his skin, but it did make his arm glow spectacularly when he activated it. “I will run.”
The pixie cocked his head. “Did you eat those things?”
Razorscale glared. “They’re on a belt.”
“Oh. Right.”
“Now if there are no more foolish objections,” Razorscale said as he let the mage lines fade, “Let’s gather the rest of our things, say our goodbyes, and be off. It’s only a couple hours’ flight from here if we make good time.”
“Do we really want to arrive in the dark?” the centaur asked. “Wouldn’t daylight be better?”
Razorscale smiled as if his teeth were still sharp. “Nighttime will be perfect.”

The next chapter is here, and the latest is up on Patreon. Next it’ll be the minotaur’s turn to spend some time in the sky!

I’m sure Wapol wasn’t Vivi’s first choice when it came to escape options but she’ll take what she can get and she’s able to react very quickly when this happens (and she’s totally fine with being on the run, too)!
Though this did get me thinking about how Chaka and Pell are reacting to all of this because Cobra’s dead and Vivi’s gone and vanished so uhh…they’re not doing too well at being royal guards at the moment…
