Being completely honest a lot of the newer stuff in the mainline MCU hasn't been that great lately and being so deep into the ATSV Spider-Man fandom sometimes i feel like i swan dived onto the last lifeboat leaving the Titanic

Calling any cg animated film with a stylised 2D inspired aesthetic “like Spiderverse” or Spiderverse-esque” is starting to become the animation equivalent of describing any experimental movie with a disturbing, uncanny or surreal tone “Lynchian”.

#puss in boots the last wish #puss in boots 2 #spiderman into the spiderverse #spiderman #like I get it #Spiderverse is having a significant influence on how studios like Dreamworks are stylising their films and everything #and it’s safe to say bad guys and puss in boots 2 wouldnet look the way they do #would simply not turn out the way they did without Spiderverse proving that not only could a 2d styled character feature film work visually #but also be very successful box office wise #…but like #you guys do know 3D/2D style hybrid films existed before Spiderverse right?#you know Sony pictures animation and marvel didn’t single gandedly invent the concept of a cgi cartoon that looks/movies like 2d animation #right??#and that hundreds of diffrent artists and studios from america to Japan have been experimenting with heavily stylised cg for actual decades #before Spiderverse came along #right????#like I’ll give the benefit of the doubt most people who call The Bad Guys Arcane or Puss 2 “Spiderverse like are simply just #not well read on the subject and history of this style of animation #so I don’t want to sound like I’m punching down at others for simply lacking context on certain things #but at the same time something about it just really irks me because by constantly comparing these distinct and unique looking films #to one film that shares a similar technique just bothers me #as someone said before; Spiderverse is like a comic book come to life #the bad guys is like a cartoon (or to me anyway a cartoony anime)#and Puss in boots 2 is like a lush concept art painting come to life #all of these films while using a similar method have their own distinctive identity and style #and by some animation fans calling Puss in boots 2 or bad guys “like Spiderverse it just feels very reductive and dismissive of these films #and thier respective creators unique creative identities and voices #again it’s a similar reason to why I and other hate it when some film bros call any experimental art film Lynchian #it just undermines what makes that work unique to itself and the artist who made it

also today i learned about the new tom holland spider-man movie in production, and as someone who really liked that trilogy…god please don’t do that, we were so close to having spider-man mostly untouched by the curse that’s overtaken marvel 😭

Okay No Way Home is old news now ik, and I do still find it a very fun film but uhhh few things that could've vastly improved it (for me specifically):

1) Topher Grace Venom but the scrapped skeleton concept (or as I like to call him, SkelEddie). Explain it away with the same reason Sandman doesn't make himself look human read: don't explain and hope the audience are too excited to notice

2) Alternatively, either of the Harry Osborns. Would be interesting to see Norman interacting with either his Harry or a Harry from a different universe

3) Either way, one extra character means Sinister Six and that's always fun :]

4) Using the Doc Ock Walk rig the Spider-Man 2 crew made to make the (admittedly few) times Otto walks using the actuators in this film have some weight and believable movement to it

5) Hot take but make Electro blue again. Or at the very least have the power of the arc reactor revert him back into energy again (have him still be yellow though, different universe so different energy and all that)

6) Literally do anything with the Lizard. I honestly forgot he was there occasionally-

#there's a moment in the bridge fight scene where Ock is just. fucking levitating as the actuators move and it makes me sad #he's such a fucking cool character visually and they rigged up and excellent mechanism to make the CGI more believable in Spider-Man 2 #disappointed but not surprised Marvel went full CG with it :/#and yeah I'm a blue Electro apologist purely bc I like when Electro is made of energy rather than. literally just being Jamie Foxx-#spiderman #no way home #clyde rambles

i hate to admit it but the flash is pretty fun

#uhhhh me #the cgi is HORRENDOUS. But #especially the middle chunk of the movie i was legit having fun. i was SMILING.#i felt like i was giggling and twirling my hair #it has a lot of the charm and sincerity you'd expect from an 80s comedy adventure #which makes sense given it's clearly very inspired by back to the future #(speak of. the whole back to the future bit was so funny to me. god)#YES the baby sequence is stupidly hilarious YES some of the humour is cringe BUT #it honestly gives me tobey maguire spiderman vibes bc it's corny but it knows it #OH and also the music is what made it feel like an 80s movie #i'm not even talking about the batman stuff. just the general score #anyway i know there's the whole thing w ezra and i also have a personal vendetta against the production bc my friend worked on it-#-and it was hell #as a MOVIE though. i liked it :]
