Mandy Walker is a cinematographer who is mostly known for her work on the films Elvis (2022), Hidden Figures (2016)- Which was nominated for an oscar, and lastly, the film we’re discussing; the 2020 Mulan remake. 

H:

A notable feature of her work for this movie is her use of color to represent the emotions of the characters in the film. When Mulan is with her family during the first section of the film, you see the use of warm tones, indicating to the audience that the space is welcoming to her.

During fight scenes, the background appears more desaturated, while Mulan stands out against the backdrop as she is wearing red. 

During important scenes, like the matchmakers scene, her fight with the Witch Xian Niang or the final battle, Mulan is always highlighted through the use of color.

M:

A significant difference we can see from the animation to the live action, is the change to the final battle sequence. As Mandy Walker mentions in an interview with Collider, there’s little that she has taken from the original animation when considering visual references, instead choosing to focus on building a new visual language entirely, to appeal to a larger audience and not just children. The scene was not shot using a motion control camera, even though there are many tilts when it comes to camera movement, instead using a telescopic crane, a scorpio and a remote head. The fight scenes are choreographed to resemble scenes from the Wuxia genre (Chinese action films) with more focus being given to the movements and actions rather than violence on screen. We can see them achieve this using exaggerated acrobatics and showcasing some actions in slow motion, which creates the dramatic effect seen mostly in this genre.

Their VFX shots spanned ancient China, and a key location is the Imperial City — fictional environments based on historical places and design principles, and the VFX house delivered the majority of the visual effects shots required for the movie, completing 434 shots in total. Production designer Grant Major was the one who came up with most of the ideas with concept art. Alongside all that huge LIDAR scans were also done in 3D using photos. These were most commonly done on scenes which in Included a lot of action scenes. Very detailed CG build of those portions of the backlot location were extended to create the wider environment.

C:

In terms of camera movement and framing, we can also observe a lot of extreme close ups in scenes in which we see a lot of detail being put into the props. For example, during the matchmaking scene, we get close-ups of the teacups, different paints, makeup, the ties and belt on her wrap dress as well as the accessories for her hair. These props hold a lot of cultural significance which is highlighted to the audience by the attention that is given to them by the camera. 

 The Tulou (the residence where Mulan and her family lives) at the beginning,  the set where the avalanche scene takes place, as well as the army camp are shown using aerial shots, wide shots and long shots as to establish the location, which is important, especially when it comes to sets like the Tulou, as it’s traditional Chinese architecture, which might not be something that non Chinese audiences are familiar with. 

When compared with the animation, the live action has done its best to correct the mistakes made in the original and to stick close to the time period that Mulan in the ballad is from, especially when it comes to the attire, set design and locations shown.

any tips for a new twi'lek oc rper? for like icons and stuff? because I have no idea what to do for promo and icons. :/

hey! best advice?? guide?? i can give is you can use faceless icons of existing twi'lek characters from the movies and shows if you want to let people know that you're playing a twi'lek, like only showing their lekku and such. for example aayla or xian from the mandalorian. you don't have to show their face and you can recolor them if you'd like. it's really up to you tbh.

or you can use regular ol human fcs and get creative with iconing. some people tend to make icons of only eyes/mouth/lower face of a faceclaim, but that's their style and a bit of an acquired taste imo.

i feel like you can also use 3D models or game characters, especially the twi'leks from SWTOR if you're okay with that! for me personally i do not mind rpers using animated/cg faceclaims when there aren't live-action ones available, but due to the lack of twi'lek resources overall, i can see why it might feel frustrating. the options are available though, you just gotta know which to choose from.

In the Founder Institute's structured, step-by-step program, these mentors will provide promising startup entrepreneurs in Penang with expert feedback and support to build their companies. In addition, participants are not required to quit their day job to participate, so they can begin building a business around their ideas without putting their livelihood at risk.

If we get enough demand to officially launch a Penang 2018 semester, then we will secure approximately 10 - 20 additional mentors. In fact, in most Founder Institute semesters the ratio of Mentors to Founders is greater than 1:1.

Based in Silicon Valley and with chapters across 170 cities and 60 countries, the Founder Institute has helped launch over 2,700 companies form and improve their business ideas, develop their marketing strategy, create an advisory board, recruit co-founders, improve their pitch, launch a product, prepare to raise capital, bootstrap to profitability, generate revenue, and more.

Xian's first bedtime..alone

Summary: Xian decided to let Onyx rest and tried to get Alastor to bed himself. Though, the fawn had other plans.

[hilariously I wrote this before I was about to go to sleep]

[9:10 pm]

Onyx fell onto his bed, letting out a groan. Xian was standing at the window, smoking a cigarette. He looked over at his boyfriend. He crushed the cigarette into the windowsill and approached.

"Little fella must've tired you out for once, hm?"

"You tell me...we let that dawn play for a little too long and now he just can't settle down."

"You know..."

He sat down next to Onyx, his hands in his lap.

"I could always get him to bed."

"You'd do that...for me?"

Onyx looked at Xian, in which he just nodded.

"Heh..you look like a disaster. I'll handle it...what's his bedtime routine again?"

He got out a pen and notepad.

"Just...get him into his pajamas, brush his teeth, make sure he's dry, and a bedtime story..sometimes a bottle of milk if he's that restless"

Xian nodded, sliding the notepad into his pocket. He had a cocky smirk as he kissed Onyx's forehead.

"You rest, darling. I'll handle him."

He got up and walked out, making his way to Alastor's bedroom. It was, unfortunately, down the hall, making them fairly far away from each other.

Soon, he twisted the door nob and pushed the door forward, spotting Alastor on the starry rug in the corner, shaking a rattle and clenching a wooden doll. The small nursery section near the end of the room was scattered with toys and plushies, and he seemed to have tried to make a stroller out of pillows and blankets. He was wearing just wearing his typical attire, only without his bowtie or shoes.

He slowly walked over to the little one, bending over to look at him.

"Heya, buddy. It's time for bed. Come on, let's get those pearly...teeth all cleaned."

Alastor turned his head to Xian, raising an eyebrow as his face contorted into a scowl, frowning quite dramatically.

"No sleepy!"

Xian poked just under his eyes, causing the fawn to close that eye and lower his ears and arms.

"Those look like eyebags, little tucker. Come on, it's most certainly your bedtime."

"No! No! No!"

No wonder Onyx has been so exhausted lately.

He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Nope. Your certainly sleepy. Come on, up you come."

He grabbed under his arms and lifted him into a bridal carry. Alastor wiggled and whined, throwing the doll, then starting to reach for the doll.

"Dollie! Dollie!"

"Uh-uh,"

Xian waved a finger in front of the baby's nose.

"You're not getting your dollie back until your in bed, mister."

Alastor crossed his arms, huffing. He flung his arms to the side and her his head dangle backwards.

"Fine..."

"There's the spirit, cranky pants!"

He carried him to the bathroom, setting him onto a closed toilet.

"You know how to brush your teeth like a man, right?"

"Huh?"

"Nevermind...you know how to brush your pear-..your teeth like a big boy, don't you?"

Alastor nodded and stumbled towards the sink, holding onto it as his legs shook a little, his eyes starting to droop. He grabbed his toothbrush and grabbed the toothpaste. He took off the cap and sleepily tried to put the toothpaste on.

"Alastor wai-"

Alas, the toothpaste got onto the toothbrush itself, some of it dripping into the sink.. Xian sighed.

"Let me help.."

He squeezed out toothpaste onto the brush, then handed it to a very sleepy fawn. Alastor shakily placed it into his mouth and moved it around, some of the toothpaste dribbling out his mouth whilst he hazily blinked.

"Alright, now spit out the remaining toothpaste. You did good, little tinker."

"..uurrghh.."

"Yeah, yeah, I know your getting sleepy. But we still gotta change you. Can't get your jacket all wrinkly now, can we?"

"..mph..want binky!"

He stomped his foot and started getting cranky again, making a whine.

"We'll find your binky soon, now, come on."

He had to [essentially] drag the fawn back to his bedroom, whilst he kept whining and storming. Xian took deep breathes, to try and keep the urge to just yell at him at bay.

"Binky! Binky! Binky!"

"We're getting your binky soon. May you not constantly say it into my ear?"

"But binky! I wan' my binky!"

"How does Onyx even deal with you.."

He muttered under his breath, getting Alastor to give him a dirty look, before pouting.

"Right, let's get you into your pajamas. Wanna go choose them?"

"Uh-huh!"

He toddled over to the closet, before immediately grabbing a red onesie, stripped with muted pink strips.

"This one! This one!"

"Do you want your daddy to dress you?"

He nodded quickly and stumbled over to Xian, though he tripped over his foot. Xian managed to catch him in time.

"Careful, little tinker. Don't wanna hit your head, do you?"

"Mm-mm.."

He picked him up and set him onto a changing pad. He started taking off his original attire, then slipped his onesie on, getting his feet in first before zipping it up

"And your still dry so that's good at least..one less thing to do."

He pulled him up onto his feet and sighed, almost as if he was feeling eyebags grow on him aswell.

"Alright, time for bed, now, what story do you-"

"NO! NO BED! NO!"

"Alastor. You are clearly tired. It is more definitely bedtime."

He spoke sternly as Alastor just let out a wendigo screech, flailing his arms and plopping onto the ground. He kicked the ground and smacked it as he kept crying and whining.

Xian almost felt a blood vessel burst. He was done. He groaned and exited the bedroom, waiting outside as Alastor's screams muffled. He sat down, whispering into his hands

"For fucks sake. He just doesn't fucking listen."

He sighed and took deep breathes, as he felt his heart rate start to lower again.

"He's probably just tired right now..."

He got up, going downstairs and making a bottle of warm milk for him. He poured milk into a water bottle [since he didn't have his bottle] and warmed it up in the microwave. He waited till it beeped, before pulling it out and shaking it a bit. He walked back upstairs.

The bedroom was quiet, except for quiet hiccups and whimpers. He knocked, before pushing the door open.

"You alright?"

"Mmh...sleepy..."

He sighed deeply

"...Knew it..."

He picked up Alastor, whose bottom lip was quivering. He sniffles, and rested his head Xian's shoulder.

"I sorry..dada"

"It's fine...just...please tell me your tired rather than throw a hissy fit, little pal."

"Mkay..."

He rubbed his back, setting him down onto his couch, placing a few pillows under him.

Alastor nodded slightly, slowly closing his eyes. Until he saw the water bottle.

"We really gotta get you a bed, huh?"

"..bottle?"

"Yeah...some warm milk..you want it?"

Alastor nodded and pointed near his toys. Xian approached, finding an empty baby bottle. He picked it up and unscrewed it, then poured the milk into the bottle. He rescrewed it and handed Alastor the bottle. Alastor drank up happily as he got tucked in.

"Good night, little tucker."

"Night night...dada..."

He closed his eyes and almost instantly fell into a deep sleep.

Alastor needs a bed huh, what if with the help of Rosie, Onyx and Xion would be able to make one of those old fashioned cradles, including a mobile of skulls and skeletons

I completely forgot that Onyx was ment to be like Sir Pentious's son [back when they were both alive]

I can imagine like Onyx and Xian going to Sir Pentious and being like "come meet our baby!" and Sir Pentious would assume it's a Hellborn baby they adopted, so he'd be happy that he gets to be a grandpa

And his reaction when he realises it's Alastor...

does Alastor get burped after a meal, if so then does he accidently spit up on his caregivers ocassionly?

sometimes he gets burped, usually he'll give signs like whining, hiccuping and holding his arms out

and he's 100% spat up on Onyx and Xian - mostly Xian which means that he's a little hesitant to burp him
