The sooner he was out of the apartment the better. That’s what Victoria kept saying to herself as she watched Landry pack his stuff.

She quite frankly never wanted to see his face again after this, even if they crossed paths at work, she would happy take a longer route to get to somewhere in the hospital if it meant not running into him.

However, Victoria wasn’t going to be petty if it came to treating patients together. She would be civil for the sake of the patient. She would work to find the problem and that would be it.

It had been a turbulent few days. Landry’s actions had gotten Victoria suspended from the hospital, she had sought to try and recruit fellow doctors to back her campaign. But perhaps the best bit of all, was finally falling into Ethan’s arms the night before.

Going all the way with him was like a dream come true, she had been wanting it for so long, since that night in Miami. She was hoping that it would be the start of something new for them.

Victoria was pulled out of her thoughts by the returning form of Landry as he came out of his room, arms full of stuff. He packed them away in his box and then went back to his room. Victoria looked at the remaining stuff on the floor and noticed his copy of Ethan’s book amongst them.

The same book Ethan thought belonged to Victoria, the same book he signed with her in mind.

Without a second thought, Victoria picked the book up and hid it behind a pillow on the sofa. She sat back, idly scrolling through her phone as Landry reappeared, none the wiser.

Victoria tried to hide the smile that was slowly forming on her face. Landry was about to have a big surprise when he unpacked his boxes.

Victoria was filling in a chart by the nurses station when she saw a figure approach her out of the corner of her eye.

“Haven’t you left for Mass Kenmore yet?” Victoria looked up.

Landry paused for a second before schooling his thoughts. “Since you’re the only one who wants to talk to me, I thought you were the best person to approach.”

Victoria scoffed. “Wants to talk is an overstatement. What do you want?”

“I think I left something at the… your apartment. Can I come over after work to look for it?”

Victoria knew what he was looking for. She was surprised it had taken him this long to realise it was missing.

Luckily she had already completed the next part of her plan. All he had to do was realise.

“Sure. But I can’t promise that the others won’t be there. And that they won’t be angry.”

“That’s fine. I expect nothing less. I think I know where it is so I’ll be as quick as possible.” Landry said before he hurried away.

“Doctor Clarke! A word in my office now please.” Another voice said from behind her.

Victoria turned round and saw Ethan already striding down the corridor, no doubt knowing that she would follow him.

And follow him was what Victoria did. She got many sympathetic glances from her colleagues, all ones wishing her good luck for the bollocking she was about to endure. But what they didn’t know was that Victoria knew she wasn’t about to be shouted at.

He never shouted at her.

As much as she wanted him to take her to a secluded part of the hospital and let him have his way with her, she knew it wasn’t going to happen. They had to keep their distance, stay professional at all times. It was beginning to make Victoria sad.

But maybe, just maybe this once she could have a little fun. Not give him the impression that she desperately wanted him.

Victoria found herself in his office. As Ethan shut the door behind him, he locked it, a move that made Victoria raise an eyebrow.

“You only lock your office when you’re trying to hide something. Or someone in this case.” Victoria chuckled.

Ethan tried to school his features but there was no hiding the amusement in his eyes. “You looked like you were having a difficult conversation, I thought I’d help you out.”

“Well thank you but I am more than grown up enough to handle my own problems.” Victoria folded her arms. “But that doesn’t explain why you locked your office door.”

“One word. Interns. But forget that. Why was he talking to you?”

Victoria sighed. She knew he would get the truth out of her eventually. “He said he left something at my apartment. He wants to come over after work to retrieve it. And I know exactly what he’s looking for.” Victoria smirked.

Ethan pinched the bridge of his nose. “Dear God please tell me you didn’t do anything illegal.”

“Why? Would you bail me out?”

“No because hopefully it would serve as a form of punishment.”

“Well unless you call me stealing his most prized possession a crime then I think I’ll just about survive.” Victoria shrugged.

“What have you done?”

“Nothing less than he deserves. Let’s just say he’s about to get a taste of his own medicine. And he won’t be able to find a cure for it because he won’t have his trusty diagnostic principles book.” Victoria said.

Ethan raised an eyebrow. “You didn’t.”

“I did. And you’re not going to do anything about it.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it.”

“Good. Now can I unlock the door and leave? We have to keep a distance remember. Like you said.”

Ethan threw her the keys and Victoria unlocked the door. “Don’t do anything stupid.”

“Well that wouldn’t be fun would it?” Victoria winked as she threw the keys back to Ethan and left the room.

Ethan shook his head with an amused smile, and sat back down at his desk. He opened up the tab he had quickly closed as Victoria had approached his office. It wouldn’t be his office for much longer.

Ethan stared at the words on the screen.

Your contribution to the outbreak in the Amazon would be most appreciated.

He had some thinking to do.

*The Day Before*

Paying the extra delivery fee was worth it if she meant she got a laugh out of this. It was nothing less than he deserved.

Victoria took the book out of the packaging and opened the front cover. She remembered where Ethan had signed it, she got out a black felt pen and had the original copy beside her so she could mimic his handwriting as best she could.

She thought about what to write instead, she didn’t want to be nasty, that wasn’t her but she could be a little sarcastic.

As carefully as she could she wrote Did you honestly expect to get off lightly with this? and then signed Ethan’s name at the bottom. With a smile Victoria shut the book.

Victoria quietly slipped into Aurora’s room and placed the book on one of her shelves before shutting the door behind her.

All he had to do was realise.

Victoria was anticipating his arrival, all the gang were sat in the living room, she was expecting them to explode when they saw him.

“There’s no way that’s real.” Bryce laughed as they watched TV.

“I don’t know, I think he pulled it off.” Rafael replied.

“Why are we watching this?” Jackie asked.

“Because you lost the remote battle.” Elijah laughed.

There was a knock at the door. Victoria pulled herself together. “I’ll get it.” She got up off the sofa. Victoria opened the door to find Landry on the other side.

“What is he doing here?” Sienna said from across the room.

“It’s fine. He says he left something here, he’s just here to retrieve it.” Victoria said as she let Landry inside.

“You’re a better person than me.” Jackie mumbled.

Landry headed straight to his old room, not looking at any of the others.

“He better not touch any of my stuff.” Aurora said.

Victoria chuckled. “Don’t worry. He knows exactly what he’s looking for.”

Landry emerged from his old room, book in hand and headed out the door without another word.

“You’re welcome by the way!” Victoria shouted before she shut the front door.

“Was that all he came for? His most prized possession?” Jackie chuckled.

“Yep. Except maybe he should’ve checked it was the right copy.” Victoria grinned as she headed over to the shared bookshelf and pulled out the original copy. They all sat up intrigued.

“Is that…” Sienna trailed off.

Victoria flipped open the cover to reveal the original signature. They had all been shown it. They knew what it looked like.

“I have never been so proud of you.” Bryce laughed.

“Do you think he’ll notice?” Rafael asked.

“Who cares if he does. He deserves everything he gets.” Jackie shrugged.

Victoria felt her phone vibrating in her pocket and saw Ethan’s name flash across the screen. She headed into her bedroom and shut the door before answering.

“This still isn’t keeping distance you know that.” Victoria said.

There was a small chuckle on the other end of the line. “I’m willing to break it for one phone call.”

“You surprise me.”

“I wouldn’t say that’s a bad thing. I wanted to check you were okay.” Ethan said.

“Wow you really must care about me.” Victoria smiled.

“I do, and I hope you know that I always will.”

“Enough to call and check on me but not enough to be seen with me.” Victoria sighed.

There was a pause. “Victoria.” Ethan sighed.

“I know Ethan. We want each other but we can’t have each other. I get it. I’ll just have to live with it.”

Deciding that the subject needed changing Ethan then said. “Did you know who get his book back?”

Victoria laughed. “Technically it wasn’t his book, just a copy but yes he did. And if he opens the front cover he’s about to get a surprise.”

Ethan laughed too. “I hope that’s the last time you do something like that.”

“Same here. I’ll see you at work tomorrow.” Victoria said. She hung up the phone taking a deep breath.

It hurt being able to talk to him like that and not actually be with him. She wanted nothing more. And it was made worse by Landry’s comments. About how he favoured her compared to the rest of their cohort. It just simply wasn’t true. If he hadn’t said such things, maybe Ethan’s mind would be different.

In an office at Edenbrook Hospital, a doctor was sat at his desk staring at his laptop screen.

He was going to tell her, he had to. It would break her heart just as much as it broke his heart he had to tell her before everyone else found out. He couldn’t not warn her, he wouldn’t do that to her.

The reply had been sent, there was no going back now.

I couldn't not write a fic like this without adding my favourite couple in there 😌

Series/Pairing: Open Heart - Ethan Ramsey x f!MC (Charley Valentine)

Rating / Warnings: T / none

Summary: It’s such a simple thing for Ethan’s birthday. This is set on Ethan’s birthday, February 19 in my universe, during Charley’s intern year.

Comments/Notes: Written for the @choicesmonthlychallenge​ Valentine’s Challenge prompts To Be ❤️ holding hands (it’s a bit of a stretch) and for the @choicesfebruary2022challenge​ Day 2 prompt “Starbucks.”

Charley had left her apartment earlier than normal. Yesterday when she was sitting with Naveen in his hospital room and he mentioned that today was Ethan’s birthday. As she was trying to fall asleep she tried to think of what to do for his birthday. Maybe it was a bad idea; he had been distant since they returned from Miami.

She dug through her box of cards and found a birthday card with a stethoscope on it. She smiled as she scrawled her name inside it. She decided she would skip her normal Starbucks and would go to that coffee shop Ethan had taken her to a few months back. A card and a cup of coffee would be reasonable to give your boss for a birthday, right? Even Ethan couldn’t’ object to that, could he?

She pushed the door open and joined the line. She bit her lip and glanced at her watch. She still had twenty minutes. That should give her enough time to get to the hospital.

“Charley?” She froze at the voice over her left shoulder.

She turned and found clear blue eyes watching her. “Good morning, Eth- Dr. Ramsey.”

“What are you doing here? Don’t you usually stop at,” he practically shuddered, “Starbucks?”

“I was actually stopping here to bring you a coffee.”

His eyebrows raised. “For me?”

She nodded. “When I was sitting with Naveen yesterday, he mentioned that it was your birthday.”

“Of course he did.”

“I figured a coffee wouldn’t be out of line.”

“You really don’t need-”

“Next!” The barista looked at Charley.

“Could I get two Viennas, please?” Charley ordered.

The barista rang up the order. “For here or to go?”

Charley began, “To-”

“For here,” Ethan stated. When Charley looked at him, he smiled. “We can enjoy our coffee before we need to get to work. Why don’t you grab a table and I’ll bring over the coffee when it’s ready.”

The barista handed Charley back her credit card and she selected a table near the cozy fireplace. Ethan soon joined her. As he set the mugs on the table he slid hers towards her as she reached over pull it towards her and their fingers met around the cup. Charley stared at their fingers, touching, and glanced at Ethan. He was also looking at their hands.

He blinked and moved his eyes to meet hers. He cleared his throat and pulled his hand back, picking up his own mug. He smiled. “Thank you for the coffee.”

1. favorite fic you wrote this year

This is like asking me to pick my favorite niece. I picked my top three for CFWC’s year-end event, but I was torn about including The Intern. It was my favorite to write because it allowed me to dive into Ethan Ramsey’s past and make him my own rather than relying on canon alone.

3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year

This was completely last minute and unplanned, but I found myself writing Max & Sienna’s wedding bonus scene as a Thank You to everyone for supporting the series. Their wedding vows are so incredibly beautiful that they make me swoon every time I read them.

12. favorite character to write about this year

Definitely Max Valentine. He’s mine in every way that matters. His and Cassie’s relationship is at the heart of all my stories for a reason. But more importantly, I wrote someone that I could fall in love with IRL, so he’s special to me.

14. a fic you didn’t expect to write

Any Maxenna fic. 😆 They’ve become my favorite couple to write about because they’re very much OCs (Max already was, but Sienna is too now). But I resisted for a long time because I couldn’t see them together. The first time @headoverheelsforramsey raised the possibility, I was like “No. Max sees Sienna as his sister’s friend and they’re too different.” But I was proven wrong and they just work. My sweet, fluff couple.

15. something you learned this year

I’ve heard established writers say that writing requires discipline and the 9-5 mentality one brings to a day job. I thought that was ridiculous because you can’t force creativity. But I learnt this year how true their advice is. Inspiration is very important, but you have to dedicate time to write and do it even if you don’t feel like it. Just like any skill, it requires constant work to hone it. Write anything every day even if it’s bad because you can fix it in edit.

A/N: This is a late submission to @choicesmonthlychallenge​ for the March Day 20 prompt: Siblings. I meant to post this a couple of days ago but time got away from me. Timeline wise, it’s set during the later section of Piece by Piece. of Enjoy!

The birthday cake had been a work of art, but with a baker as good as Sienna Valentine (née Trinh) they expected nothing else. It wasn’t just her skill (although it was certainly laudable) rather it was her ability to make the design and flavors personal that made the creation memorable.

And, making a birthday cake for her two favorite people in the world — her husband and her fellow dolphin — was as personal as it got. She had been pleased with not only the final result but also the appreciation from the siblings as they blew out the candles, cut the cake and forked up the first bite.

1- When did you start playing Choices? What was the first book you played? 

I downloaded Choices in an extremely terrifying moment of my life in late 2019. I was seeing the ads everywhere and thought that this game might serve as a fairly decent distraction. Well, I wasn’t wrong skfjksjfk 

I’m not sure which one was actually the first, but it was either the default TRR or Save The Date promoted at that time. 

2- When and why did you join Choices fandom?

My obsession with Open Heart and Ethan Ramsey tied nicely with the release of the second book in 2020. The lockdown allowed me to explore this fictional world further, so I started looking for more content. I found the legendary Denise, aka @justanotherrookie, while lurking on IG. That’s when my long-forgotten Tumblr account came to my mind, and I logged in with the intention of scrolling through the tags to satisfy my EJR thirst.

3- How did you pick your blog name? 

Oh, dear…It’s very silly! My skin is extremely pale and I have always been obsessed with music; hence the combo. 

Fun fact: this account is quite old (though still not as old as my tumbroke card; I had like three other accounts before this one), and I was slightly embarrassed to enter a new fandom with my dusty aesthetic blog signed by some ominous name, but decided to go with the flow. Then the-pale-goddess has become my brand, and it was too late for any changes–anyone who has changed their URL knows how problematic blogging is afterward.

4- Pull up the first post in your archive, and tell us about it!  

My first fandom post was inspired by the frustrating ending of the softball chapter AND the first hiatus announcement…It didn’t age well. As we all know, Ethan & MC didn’t ‘talk about it.’ What’s more, we had to survive a long OH drought before PB decided to resume the second book. 

Three years later, the very same shitpost is still the most popular Choices post on my silly little blog lol

5- How long have you been writing fanfiction?

3 years, fanfiction is my pandemic baby! Though I’ve been writing since I was a kid, it was mostly poetry and never in English. But as time passed, I got more occupied with my teenage life and eventually lost motivation to write. That old passion resurfaced several years later, at the beginning of the pandemic. Apart from the obvious need for distraction from the COVID situation, I was frustrated that my English skills were getting rusty, so I decided to dive in. 

6- What is your favorite Choices book, and what is your favorite Choices book to write about?

No surprise here: Open Heart (the first book) and Open Heart 😂 I never tried writing about any other Choices book. 

7- Share the first fanfic you wrote with us. Do you still like it, or would you change it if you were writing it today?

Miami Heat aka my smutty Miami AU. The concept is brilliant, but the execution…Yikes! I often think of rewriting the entire thing because the writing is amateur at best and my inner perfectionist cringes whenever I think of this mini-series.  

8- What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?

It all depends on my mood, so here’s a list of my favorites!

9- Do you have a fic that you didn’t expect to be well received, but it was? What about one you expected to be but found could use a little more love?

Cabin Fever - apparently this 69 plotless smut is iconic for some reason? I don’t really get the hype. It has an insane amount of kudos on ao3, my other fics can’t compare lol 

Burnt - Book 1 mutual pining E&T classic and one of my absolute favorites (we’re talking top 3); it could definitely use a little more love!

10- If you could write only angst, fluff, or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why? 

I’ll shock you all and say that I wish I could write fluff for the rest of my life kjgkdgjkdf But since I suck at it, I’d love to be stuck with angst and a dash of smut. 

It’s probably a sad thing to admit, but I feel the most comfortable while writing angst. The realism of pain and the emotions that follow are simply very familiar, and it’s easy for me to conjure up a creative image to match the idea. Besides, there’s so much to explore in the angsty realm: all the flavor, nuance, layers, and symbolism. The possibilities are endless!

Smut doesn’t need an explanation, does it? I live on the thirst street 🤡

11- Do you ever recognize yourself in any of your MCs or in your writing?

I do. That’s probably why Open Heart got me sucked right in–OH MC felt very real and relatable, I couldn’t help but see bits of myself in her. Though we share many traits and experiences, Tiffany definitely isn’t an extension of me. I poured my heart and soul into this woman, but she has become her own person and I try to avoid self-projecting into her character unless there’s a clear purpose. 

12- What element of writing do you struggle with most?

Recently, I have been struggling with writing in general lol The internet is ruthless!

My biggest issue is that self-loathing perfectionist who doesn’t let me enjoy the process, nothing seems to be good enough for her, and that attitude dims my motivation and hinders creativity.

On a more technical note, I absolutely suck at describing basic movement. I could churn out a long essay on a character’s internal struggle explaining the most complex emotions or a 4K elaborate smut, but when it comes to finding the right words to portray the simplest action, like walking down the stairs or setting the scene for an early morning conversation at the hospital, I feel lost kdhdkhdkdb 

13- Do you have any neglected work you really want to finish?

Pretty much all of my WIPs are neglected 🤡 But here are the most important projects I’m hoping to finish at some point in the not-too-distant future:

14- If someone you know in real life (who isn’t involved in fandoms) asked to read your work, would you let them? If yes, what would you recommend they read first? 

Since fanfic is based on an existing work of fiction, and the core plotlines and characters should be well-known to the readers, I guess it could be a tedious and confusing read for someone who isn’t involved in the fandom. But then I have received comments from people unfamiliar with OH who have stumbled upon my fics and gave them a chance, so maybe I’m wrong lol 

I like to think that I would be okay with sharing my works with someone I know and trust in real life, but let’s be honest: my crippling anxiety would stop me ksjfkjssd However, if I were to pick a fic rec, I’d choose Heaven Upside Down AU because it doesn’t need an extensive OH knowledge. Plus, I’m very proud of this series.

15 - Are there any writers (published authors and/or fanfic writers) who influenced your writing? 

While I try to keep my writing style unique and simply mine, there are three lovely ladies who had a huge impact on my writing journey:

@writinghereandthere (aka an actual genius and my writing role model) was the direct source of inspiration behind my fanfic revelation. I fell in love with Ethan and Mariana, Ana’s beautiful prose, her wit, unparalleled talent, and fantastic characterization. Her writing changed the trajectory of my life. Though she left the fandom long ago, her masterlist is a must-read for everyone, trust me! (Ana, if you’re reading this: I miss you more than words can convey. Sorry for the spam I leave in your inbox every now and then skgjksgjk Hope to hear about your original work soon ❤️)

@starrystarrytrouble & @terrm9 - these two literary geniuses have inspired me to follow my own writing path and develop a distinctive style. Their masterpieces offer poetic, raw emotions, encouraging me to allow myself more creative freedom. I’m in constant awe of their unmatched talent and come back to their works whenever I want to feel things ❤️

16- Which one of your stories would you most like to see as a movie/series? 

Can I have all of them, please? 

I would pay all my money to watch a TV series based on my canon OH plotline���I’m not kidding, I even made a bunch of Netflix edits because I need it in my life. On the other hand, my precious AUs would look amazing on the big screen! The most scrumptious one still hasn’t left my head though, so you have to trust me–the cinematic potential is truly there kdgjkdgjk 17- Do you write original fiction? 

I have a few ideas, but they’re so complex I’m stuck on the outlining phase. Mayhaps one day?

18 -  What other hobbies do you have?

I’m a certified music freak and a cinephile. I practice destroying male egos on a daily basis. I love photography, niche sports, playing with my dog, lifting people’s moods, random unhinged facts, and ignoring reality, and I have just entered my skincare expert era. 

19 - What’s your favorite emoji?

1- When did you start playing Choices? What's the first book you played?

I wanna say the early days like 2017-ish. The first book I played was The Freshman.

2- When, and why, did you join Choices fandom?

Again, the early days of Choices. I’m pretty sure it was in 2017, as Choices was pretty new at the time and there weren’t a lot of book options at the time. I joined because I had seen an ad for the game and I thought it looked like fun. Little did I know it would lead me down the rabbit hole.

3- How did you pick your URL name?

It’s a manipulation of my real name. It took far longer than I’m willing to admit to come to my final decision.

4- Go back to your archive and tell us about the first post on your Choices blog.

I’m not a Choices blog, exclusively, but according to my archive, my first Choices post was when I posted my fic The Aftermath on 4/29/21. I do suspect that’s off because I feel like I remember posting things related to OPH before then but I likely didn’t tag it which is why it’s not showing up.

5- How long have you been writing fanfiction?

Since 2013, I believe. I used to write a lot for the HP fandom; I used to write stories while sitting in my lecture classes (don’t follow my example, kids).

6- What is your favorite Choices book to write about?

I’ve only ever written for Open Heart. I’ve had a few ideas for some other books but nothing that ever developed past the brainstorming stage.

7- Share the first fanfic you wrote with us. Do you still like it or would you change anything about it?

The first fic I ever shared with CFWC was Part 3 of my Choices mini-series. That whole series has a special place in my heart because of how difficult it was to write and the emotional toll it took on me, but that particular chapter was one of my favorites. I wouldn’t change a single thing about it.

8- What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?

That’s like asking me to pick a favorite child. This also contradicts my #1 fic for the Writer’s Top 3 event but I have to say I love A Dance in the Moonlight. It’s sweet and fluffy and gives me all the domestic vibes we were denied in canon. That one just makes me happy.

9- Do you have a fic that you didn’t expect to be well received, but it was? What about one you expected to be, but it could use a little more love?

Hmm… my Bryce x Sienna fic The Start of Something New. That one took me months to write and when I finally posted it, I didn’t think anyone would like it but I was pleasantly surprised to find I was wrong.

In truth, I don’t think there’s one that could use more love. I feel like my fics are lucky enough to have the love they do get; I couldn’t really ask for more than that.

10- What is your specialty as a fanfic writer?

I have no idea. Fluff? Let’s go with fluff, that seems accurate.

11- If you could write only angst, fluff, or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why?

Fluff. I like a good angst but fluff makes my heart happy and it comes a lot more naturally to me.

12- Do you ever recognize yourself in any of your MC’s or in your writing?

Nat is definitely me. Dani, as well, though I’ve based a lot of her mannerisms off of my real-life friends as well.

13- What element of writing do you struggle with most?

Worldbuilding, I think. I like developing characters and I feel that I’m pretty good with plot points, but worldbuilding always seems to get me at that ‘stuck’ point.

14- Do you have any neglected work you really want to finish?

Tons. My Book 3 rewrite to start. I, unfortunately, wrote myself into a corner with that one and I haven’t been able to get myself out of it. Someday I’ll figure out how to get that one back off the ground…

15- If someone you know in real life (who isn’t involved in fandoms) asked to read your work, would you let them? If yes, what would you recommend they read first?

Hmm… I’m not sure. I’m very protective of my writing and I try to keep it separate from my personal/real life. So I suppose it depends on how well I know that person. If I were to have them read a fic, I’d have them read With Every Heartbeat. It’s angst with a happy ending, and it’s a fic I’m proud of so that feels like the best choice.

16- Are there any writers (published authors and/or fanfic writers) who influenced your writing?

The Sisterhood, of course! As for published authors, there’s no one author who influenced me. I’ve been influenced by many authors, it’d be hard to narrow down just one person.

17- Which one of your stories would you most like to see as a movie/series?

Oh dang, what a question. I’d have to say either my Choices mini-series or my current WIP The Way I Loved You. They feel like they could be the most fun to turn into a movie or series.

18- Do you write original stories?

Yes and no. I have some WIPs that I’ve been working on for years but, again, I get stuck at worldbuilding. I’d like to tackle them again but it’s been so long, I’m going to have to start back at square one. Though, I suppose that’s not the worst thing.

19 - What other hobbies do you have?

Video games, reading, dancing, yoga, and Dungeons & Dragons (‘cause I’m a nerd)!

20 - What’s your favorite emoji?

Summary: whilst in Hawaii for a colleague’s wedding, Ethan and Tobias have a frank discussion about their past.

Authors note 1: before you @ me, yes I touch on this in chapter 11 of When Egos Collide and I did mention it in my HC for Tobias and Ethan but I felt inspired to write the whole scene between these two

It was Friday and for the first time in awhile Tobias felt like he was able to let loose just a little. He was pleasantly surprised to be invited to the wedding of Ines DeLarosa, he had only known her a short time and they got along. He made his way to the bar to have a few beverages. He nearly texted Ethan to see if he wanted to join him but decided against it, figuring he would want some alone time with Casey. So when he entered the bar and saw Ethan sitting at the bar nursing a drink he was surprised.

He walked up,

“I thought you would be playing musical beds with Casey?”

Ethan chuckled whilst Tobias looked perplexed. “If I was in tropical paradise with the woman I loved I would be wanting to spend every free minute with her.”

“Gives me a chance to think about what I want to say to Casey without fucking our relationship up” said Ethan.

“What do you mean, without fucking stuff up?” Asked Tobias.

Ethan took a deep breath. “When Edenbrook was facing closure lets just say I nearly screwed our relationship up when it came to a our future chat. I kind of do not want to do so again.” Said Ethan very resolutely.

“Well be honest will be the only advice I would be qualified to give. I mean if both of us were any good at relationships then we probably not be in a bar in Hawaii the night before a colleague’s wedding.” Stated Tobias.

“True. I think the only thing I can say is that I am glad neither of us would have ended up with Estelle. God that ended up a mess.”

“Oh god, I am surprised we managed to stay friends after that debacle.” Said Tobias.

“I think we realised we were being played, and our protracted pissing contest had not taken its full toll.”

“Yeah, that is a point. How did we let it get so bad?”

“Well we did stay friends and yes everything else had not taken its full toll but at the end of the day things were never the same after that night.”

“True,” said Ethan. “I think we wanted too many of the same things, and wanted them for too long, especially with Estelle.”

“Wanted her yes, but she had the eyes for you, I had no hope. If I had my time again, I would have not detoured to the bar or called one of her friends.”

“So you are saying you regretted it?”

“Whilst doing it no, but after, I was physically sated and believe me, after a session that intense, I would be asleep nearly all the time but I could not, because I regretted it, the regret was worse when I got home.”

“I could not trust you after that, you know?“

“Believe me I know, I guess that is why we did not address it at the time but it was the beginning of the end that is for sure.”

“Ethan takes a drink. “The irony is, the fight we had that night was about our feelings, as she thought that she loved me and wanted to know if I felt the same as she wanted to know where to apply for residency. I felt something at the time, I know now it was not love but you do wonder if she really did love me if she was fucking you at the first opportunity.

“That is a point, we both were under the influence however. Still does not excuse my behaviour however…”

“No, it does not but did Estelle give you a reason to believe that she was lying.”

“In honesty, No.”

Ethan signals the bar tender and orders another drink for both of them.

“Is the regret you felt after that night the main reason why you did not fall for her games after?”

“Partially, the other part was a vain hope that we could remain friends after that night, I know I grossly violated the “bro code” and your trust but if I showed that I could be trusted then I hoped we could repair, I was wrong at the time but it was my hope.”

“And here we are, more than 10years after the fact and working on the same team that we so badly wanted in on.” Said Tobias. “I was saddened that we could not be friends when you reached out but I guess it was not our time.”

“Well at the time I did not have a scheme to bring down a tyrant of a hospital CEO, nor had I made any attempt to get over my abandonment issues at the time either.”

“That is true,” reflected Tobias, “I am glad that we have had the chance to correct that…”

“Well if someone had told me even three years ago, let alone when we fell out, that I would be working on the same team as you, contemplating a future involving marriage with one the brightest medical talents I have seen ever then I probably would have sent them to the psych ward to be locked up.”

Tobias nearly choked on his drink.

“Your contemplating what with who now?” Tobias was shocked. The Ethan he knew did not believe in marriage, especially for himself.

“Believe me, it took me far too long as you to admit my feelings for Casey to myself, let alone her, but when I realised the true extent of those feelings, my mind did start to change on many of things, marriage being one. I at least want to give her some surety going into the boards and also with offers that I will go with her wherever she goes.”

Tobias was still in shock but was happy that Ethan was happy.

“Well, you can tell the levels of personal growth if you are willing to enter into marriage.”

“I did not think it was in the cards for me since I was eleven but I am glad that I have been proven wrong.”

The two continued with a few drinks and their chat. They turn in. Both surprised at how pleasant their evening had being. Tobias knew he was a real prick on earlier occasions when Ethan had reached out earlier to reconcile and working together had been enjoyable. Maybe time was what they needed for them over themselves and what happened. Both men felt lighter for clearing the air over Estelle. It was their beginning of the end and both were glad the air had been cleared in relation to her. Both felt even before this frank chat that they were well on the road to reconciliation but now they felt it more so and both despite being nervous at what Leland could throw their way, we’re looking forward to bringing him down and to resuming a friendship that had been on hiatus in both their opinions far too long.

Bryce hadn’t been to a Halloween party in a few years, thanks to working on Halloween all through out residency, but he was finally attending his friends’ apparently iconic Halloween party. They’d thrown one every year since their first year of residency because, somehow, at least two of them had the night off every year. He swore they must’ve planned it and considering how quickly Ethan became wrapped around Sydney’s finger, it wouldn’t have been difficult. 

Not only did he get to go to their party, but he also was finally able to join in their group costume. Yeah, when they said ‘superheroes’ they probably, like, the Avengers or something, but when one of his young patients showed him some kids show about animal-themed superheroes, he knew he couldn’t pass it up. Animals are cute, superheroes are cool, who could possibly resist him? Not that he needed a costume to help with that. So, Cat Noir it was. The flirty personalities matching up was just a coincidence. Obviously.

Did Bryce think anyone would know who he was? Not necessarily. Did he expect to bump into someone with a matching costume? Absolutely not.

“Meow, m’lady.” Bryce said from behind a woman in a Ladybug costume as she was refilling her drink her in the kitchen.

She turned around and eyed Bryce up and down. “No fucking way.”

“I don’t think Ladybug would swear like that.” Bryce smirked.

“As an adult she totally would. Especially at Cat Noir.” She laughed.

“Okay, you got me. I actually don’t know the show well enough to know whether or not that’s true.” Bryce admitted. 

“You don’t know the show but you decided to dress up as one of the characters?” 

“Hey, one of my patients showed it to me and I thought I’d look good in the suit. And I was right.” Bryce winked. 

“One of your patients? Where do you work?” The woman leaned her back against the counter, taking a sip from her drink.

“Edenbrook. You?” Bryce refilled his own drink - the thing he’d come there to do in the first place before getting distracted.

“Same. What department do you work in? I’d assume peds, but that’s where I work so I know it’s not that.”

“That’s a lot of questions, Ladybug. Aren’t you afraid I’ll reveal my true identity?”

The woman rolled her eyes playfully. “I think we’ll be okay. So, what department?”

“Cardio-thorasic surgery. So, you said peds? I have a friend in peds - Sienna.”

“Dr. Trinh? She’s one of my favorite doctors to work with. She treats us nurses really well.” 

“Do a lot of doctors… not… treat you well?” Bryce asked hesitantly.

“Well, I think in peds, some of the doctors just don’t work well with adults. But, yeah, sometimes doctors are assholes. I’m sure you’re not though, right?” She raises an eyebrow.

“No, no, of course not!”

“I was just joking, I’m sure you’re fine. But I do see my friend waving at me from the karaoke station, so I should get back to her. I’ll see you around though.”

“Yeah, of course–” 

Just like the real Ladybug after a fight, the woman was out of sight impossibly fast.

“Sienna please, you gotta help me.” Fighting back his hangover headache, Bryce followed Sienna around the apartment as she cleaned up the next morning.

“Bryce, I wasn’t taking inventory of who all was here in what costumes! I’m sorry but I don’t know who dressed up as Ladybug last night.”

“She said she was a peds nurse, she had curly hair, she was hot–” Sienna glared at him. “I’m sorry! I’m not gonna pretend she wasn’t hot! But, like, she was also funny!”

“Bryce! Calm down. I will try to find out who it was, but I can’t make any promises.”

It was better than nothing. He felt like Prince fucking Charming with no clue who he’d danced with at the ball. Bryce flopped down on the couch and pulled his phone out of his pocket. When he went to unlock it, he realized it was still on Do Not Disturb from last night. He didn’t even remember turning it on. Six missed texts. Damn. And five of them were from Keiki. Who was fine, but just sent what could’ve easily been one message in five. The other message was from an unsaved number.

hey, Cat. it’s Ladybug. got ur number from Sienna

“Sienna!”

Sienna rushed back into the room. “What’s wrong?”

“Who did you give my number to last night?”

“What? What are you talking about?”

“Ladybug texted me! She said you gave her my number!”

“I… I don’t remember. Honestly, if it wasn’t for Sydney’s hangover cure, I would probably still be messed up.”

“Ugh, fine. Go finish cleaning. I’ll text her back and let you know.”

“You could always help me clean.”

“No, I’m good. I’ll just text the cute girl you gave my number to!” 

Sienna rolled her eyes, but continued cleaning anyway.

Hello, m’lady. Any chance I could know your real identity now?

Sienna didn’t tell you?

Premise: Ethan consoles his terrified daughter during a thunderstorm. 

The powerful rumble of thunder in the distance finally jolts her awake. Lilac clambers out of bed, noticing her husband is nowhere to be found. Knowing what a light sleeper he is, she is convinced he found the sounds of the storm unbearable. Blinking the last traces of sleep away, she gently pads down the stairs. A bright light shines from the living room. The closer she gets, the clearer the soft rumble of voice becomes.

There, on the couch, is her husband, sprawled with much difficulty due to his height. Their six year-old daughter, Violet, is snuggled to his side, clutching the cotton of her father’s t-shirt as she eyes the windows nervously. And wedged between both of them, fluffy black tail swinging lazily, is their black cat Minnie.

“… Jasmine just said Thor was angry and went back to sleep.”
