CFWC Celebration
Hey, fandom! Two important celebrations take place (or begin) in September: Hispanic Heritage Month and Bisexual Awareness Week.
Hispanic Heritage Month is a U.S.-based event that celebrates the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic Americans. Since we're a global community, we don't think this should be limited to the US, but instead be a celebration of Latine people and cultures worldwide.
Bisexual Awareness Week is a global celebration dedicated to the support and acceptance of the bi community. It's a chance to elevate voices, increase visibility, and bring attention to the unique issues faced within the community. Ideally, it also serves as a platform to advocate for bisexual rights.
We feel it's important to celebrate diversity in the Pixelberry Choices fandom, so in addition to our PRIDE celebration each June, we will be supporting other events that highlight inclusion going forward.
To that end, we would like to announce our month-long CFWC celebration...
Event Guidelines:
Between September 15 and October 15, 2023, we encourage our writers and artists to submit creations that celebrate one or both events.
Fics and visual arts can be submitted.
There are no prompts, but your work should reflect one or both of the celebrations.
Please use the tag #hispanic heritage month and/or #bisexuality awareness week on your post, and remember to tag @choicesficwriterscreations.
All works will be notated with a special symbol on the weekly lists, and two separate masterlists will be posted upon event completion.
Everyone who submits will be eligible for a prize that will be randomly selected after October 16th.
If you have any questions, please send us an ask, or you can DM our mods @jerzwriter or @cfwcmod-lucy.

🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂
Stretching her arms over her head, Riley slowly opened one eye as she heard the familiar knock on her cabin door. The morning sun shone through the train window and across her bed. She softly smiled and swung her legs over the side, her feet touching the cool floor. She yawned and walked over to the door, pulling it open.
"Rise and shine, queen-to-be!" Maxwell Beaumont was his usual jubilant self. "Did you sleep well, little blossom? I brought you some breakfast!"
The rich aroma of medium roast coffee hit her senses while Chance jumped up excitedly at the smell of pancakes and bacon. ‘Arf ... Arf ...’
“Ah, yes. My entrance is welcomed by the corgi choir."
"That smells amazing. Thank you soooo much, Max."
"You are very welcome, Your Majesty," Maxwell winked, giving a little bow and grinning at her. "You'd better hurry and get ready."
The Royal court was in Paris, France; today's event ... the Royal tea party.
Riley took the tray from Maxwell, and Chance sat at her feet. "Good morning, little pup," Maxwell cooed, as Chance happily accepted a pet and scratch behind his ears.
"So, are you ready for afternoon tea with the former queen?" Maxwell asked.
"Yeah, I guess. She's not exactly my favorite person, but... I'm still curious."
"She's a formidable woman," Maxwell shuddered.
"But on the bright side, this could be the perfect opportunity to corner her about her involvement with the scandal and get your answers!"
"I hope you're right," Riley sighed, slipping Chance a small piece of bacon.
"At a public event, she'll be caught off guard! She won't be able to run off or dodge you." Max added.
"And if she's not forthcoming, we might be able to do a little digging with the other nobles at the tea party."
"That's the spirit!" Maxwell grinned. "If you ever need a little extra confidence, you know who to call."
"Yes. Thank you for everything, Max."
"Of course. But first, get ready for the day! We don't want to be late!"
‘Arf!’ Chance barked, agreeing with him.
"Can Chance come?" Riley wondered aloud.
"I wish he could, but the venue doesn't allow pets. I'll bring him along to the duchy later, though."
"Okay, that's good, thanks, Max."
"Now, go and get ready. Don't worry about a thing. I've got the corgis covered. See you at the tea party!" Maxwell gave Riley a mock salute before he closed her door behind him.
After finishing her breakfast and a quick shower, Riley pulled out a gorgeous light blush dress with a delicate floral print. She applied her makeup, dried her hair, then snapped a gold barrette into place.
She stepped out of the train and went into the waiting limousine. After a short drive, Riley arrived at the extravagant tea party at an uptown Parisian hotel. It was a beautiful spring day, and the hotel was decorated with the finest flower arrangements.
Riley entered the formal tearoom; hearing soft, elegant music and people's chatter. The room was decorated with luxurious chandeliers and intricate floral arrangements. Tables were covered with fine linen tablecloths, and chairs were upholstered in plush velvet. A small orchestra was playing softly in the corner, and servers were carrying trays laden with exquisite tea sets and delicious-looking cakes. Riley recognized a few ladies and gentlemen from the court, but everyone else was a mystery.
She spotted Madeleine and Hana chatting at the far end of the hall. As she approached, Madeleine spotted her and quickly ended the conversation with Hana.
"Lady Riley, its good of you to join us."
"This is lovely; I am drowning in ruffles," Riley quipped.
"I'm afraid that's one of the finer points of an elegant event like this one. To be honest, I wouldn't expect you to appreciate it lady Riley, so don't strain yourself."
"Oh, we wouldn't want that, would we?" Riley countered, rolling her eyes.
"Well, do try to enjoy yourself." Madeleine sauntered off before Riley could say anything else.
"Wow. That was... nice." Riley responded sarcastically under her breath. Stepping to the side, trying to read the place cards, she bumped into someone.
"Well, hello. What a pleasure to see you here, Lady Riley. You look stunning, as always." Liam smiled, expressing tenderness as he kissed her cheek.
"Liam! Thank you. It's great to see you, too! I didn't think you'd be here."
"My schedule's been quite busy lately. I am only here to make the opening remarks. I was actually hoping to spend some time with you after this event."
"That would be wonderful." Riley answered, delightedly.
"It's been too long. I'd love to hear how you're doing."
"Liam, ...wishing I could kiss you right now."
"Lady ... Riley you shouldn't say such things." Liam murmered as he looked at her hungrily, his eyes sweeping over her face.
"Maybe I'm hoping you'll get a little reckless." Riley whispered.
“Maxwell mentioned that you recently adopted a puppy.”
Riley’s eyes lit up, a smile tugging at her lips.
"Oh, yeah, his name is Chance. He's a little ball of orange and white fluff. He was lost when Maxwell found him.”
"That sounds wonderful. I'm glad you're enjoying his company."
"He's a really good boy. He's so friendly and happy. He loves to play, and he's really good at fetching."
"I can't wait to meet him. Maybe I'll even steal him from you," Liam teased.
"You can try, but I'm pretty sure he'd choose me," Riley shot back, her eyes sparkling with mirth.
"I would love to meet him sometime. In fact, we could spend the afternoon together at the park."
"That sounds lovely."
Noticing dignitaries walking towards them, behind Riley, Liam sighs regrettedly,
"I fear our time alone is coming to an end ... I better greet these guests. But, please wait for me. I don't want to delay any longer to spend some time with you. Let's go after the tea party."
"Okay." Riley beamed
"There's a break in the tour schedule tonight so I can slip out for the night. See you later?" Liam looked at her pleadingly.
"Yes, Liam ... later."
Riley felt the heat rise in her cheeks and butterflies in her stomach as Liam kissed her cheek, letting his lips linger on her cheek.
Squeezing her hand, Liam turned away to greet the nobles.
🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂
Placing the linen table napkin on her lap, Riley’s attention was pulled to the sound of Madeleine's voice as she stepped in front of a microphone on the dais. As she begins her formal address to the court, Olivia slid into the chair next to Riley.
“I never liked her.”
“You don't like anyone, Liv.”
“True, but I especially dislike her.”
“Oh, dear, let's get something to drink.” Hana responds trying to change the subject of conversation.
“Of course, let's engage in frivolous social conversation and engage in witty banter.” Olivia snidely responds. Her mood quickly turning despondent as she watched the King address the room.
Riley noticed her abrupt change in mood as her expression shifted to sadness as she watched Liam across the room.
“Olivia, are you okay?” Riley asked in a whisper as Olivia shakes her head, “No ... he's engaged to Madeleine and in love with you ... I can't help how I feel about him, can I?”
"Olivia, I think --"
Abruptly standing up from the table, “at least I still have my pride. Just let me leave with it.”
Olivia walked out without looking back. Hana watched her leave with a concerned look on her face. “I wonder what that was about.”
Riley bit her lip as she turned her gaze to regard Hana.
“I hope she's able to sort things out. She's been through so much."
"Speaking of which ... how are you doing, Riley?”
“I'm holding up okay,” Riley sighed, seeing the opportunity to talk to Queen Regina.
🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂
After a disappointing conversation with the queen mother, and later, saying goodbye to Hana ...
Riley looked up to see Liam waiting for her at the front entrance, appearing eager to spend some time together.
Riley couldn't help but smile as she approached him.
"Your Majesty," she dipped into a small curtsy, smiling coyly.
"Lady Riley," Liam greeted her, a smile lighting up his face.
As he escorted Riley to his SUV, Liam leaned close and softly spoke,
"we'll be having company." Liam chuckled at her confused look, as the sliding passenger door opened.
Riley peeked inside and saw a fluffy ball of orange and white fur curled up on the back seat. "Chance!"
Chance's ears perked up at the sound of her voice. He jumped out of the car, barking happily. He jumped around her, wagging his tail so fast that his entire butt shook.
Riley laughed, dropping to her knees. Chance jumped into her lap, licking her face.
Liam grinned. "Looks like he missed you."
"Aw, I missed you, too."
Arriving at a Parisian dog park, the crisp autumn air filled Riley's lungs as she breathed deeply. Puffy, white and gray clouds were overhead, and the trees were ablaze with red, orange and yellow around you.
Riley and Liam walked hand-in-hand, Chance trotting ahead of them. The leaves crunched under their feet, and the sounds of children playing nearby filled the air.
"It's such a beautiful day," Riley remarked, looking around.
"It is," Liam agreed. "Autumn is my favorite season. I love the changing colors of the leaves, and the way the air feels chilled."
Riley looked over at Liam, admiring the way his blue eyes shone in the sunlight. "I love the way you see the world, Liam."
"Likewise. You make me want to see everything in a new light."
They continued walking, taking in the beauty of the park. Chance ran ahead, chasing birds and squirrels.
As they rounded a bend, Riley spotted a man and his dog. She watched as the man tossed a ball, and the dog darted after it. The dog returned, the ball in his mouth, and the man pet him lovingly.
"That's what I want," Riley said suddenly. "To have a relationship with Chance like that."
"You will," Liam assured her. "Chance loves you, and you're already doing a great job with him. You're a natural."
As they reached the center of the park, Riley looked up. The sky was now darker; the sun hidden by the clouds.
"I wish we could just stay here, in this moment," Riley breathed. "It's perfect."
"It is." Liam gazed into her eyes, a smile tugging at his lips.
Riley leaned closer, and Liam closed the distance between them. Their lips met, and Riley felt her heart flutter. Liam's lips were soft and warm, and Riley sighed contentedly.
The moment was interrupted by the sudden downpour of rain. Riley squealed and grabbed Liam's arm.
"Let's get under the gazebo," Liam chuckled, bending down to pick up Chance.
They ran to the shelter of the gazebo, laughing and wiping the rain from their faces.
"Well, that was unexpected," Riley giggled.
"I'll say," Liam laughed.
Riley wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him in for another kiss. This time, the kiss was deeper, more passionate.
They stayed under the gazebo, kissing, as the rain fell around them. It was a perfect moment, and Riley never wanted it to end.
"Lady Riley," Liam breathed.
"Hmm?"
"You're getting wet."
"I am."
"And you don't even seem to care."
"I don't."
Liam laughed, shaking his head. "What am I going to do with you?"
"I can think of a few things," Riley grinned, kissing him again.
Liam returned the kiss fervently, wrapping his arms around her tightly. They stayed under the gazebo, the rain pouring down around them, lost in each other.
They pulled apart reluctantly as Chance barked and ran onto the grass and runs quickly back over to them, with a ball in his mouth.
"It seems he's ready for a game of fetch," Liam chuckled.
"I'm ready, too," Riley said, winking at Liam.
"Let's play."
Riley tossed the ball for Chance, and they both laughed as they joined the chase, returning to the downpour outside of the gazebo.
Riley giggled as she spun around, her arms extended. Liam grabbed her hands and pulled her close, the rain dripping from their hair.
"You're the most beautiful woman I've ever seen," Liam stroked her cheek and gently moved her hair behind her ear.
Riley's breath caught in her throat.. She didn't know what to say.
"Liam," she whispered.
Liam leaned down, his lips brushing hers. Riley's heart raced, and she kissed him back, the rain falling around them. Liam's hands were warm on her back, and she pressed herself closer to him, deepening the kiss.
It was the most perfect moment Riley could have imagined. She didn't want it to end.
The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the park. The rain had stopped, and the air smelled fresh and clean. Riley and Liam were walking hand-in-hand, Chance trotting along beside them.
"Today was wonderful," Riley said. "Thank you, Liam."
"I should be the one thanking you," Liam replied. "You've brought so much happiness into my life."
"You deserve all the happiness in the world, Liam," Riley said, smiling up at him.
Liam leaned in, his lips brushing against hers. Riley's heart fluttered, and she wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer.
"I want to show you something," Liam murmured, breaking the kiss.
"What is it?"
"Come on." Liam took her hand and led her down a path, Chance following close behind.
"Where are we going?" Riley asked, her curiosity piqued.
"It's a surprise." Liam grinned, and Riley's heart skipped a beat.
They walked through the park, the sunset painting the sky in shades of pink and gold. Riley could see the Eiffel Tower in the distance, and the streets of Paris were bustling with activity.
"Close your eyes," Liam said.
"Okay." Riley did as he asked, trusting him completely.
"Now, take my hand and step forward."
Liam's hand was warm and strong, and he guided her carefully. After a few steps, he stopped.
"Can I open my eyes?"
"Not yet," Liam chuckled.
Riley waited patiently, the anticipation building.
"Okay," Liam said. "Open your eyes."
Riley opened her eyes, and gasped. They were standing at the edge of the lake, and the water reflected the sky perfectly. The colors were vibrant, and the Eiffel Tower was lit up, casting a golden glow over everything.
Riley's hand was warm in his. Liam glanced at her and smiled. They were walking through the park, the stars twinkling above. Chance was trotting alongside them, his tongue hanging out.
"It's such a beautiful night," Riley remarked, looking up at the sky.
"It is," Liam agreed. "Though I am a bit hungry."
"I'm starving," Riley laughed. "All that exercise has me worked up an appetite."
"Let's head back to the train, then." Liam started leading them towards the edge of the park.
"Oh, no, you don't," Riley teased, tugging him back. "I have a better idea."
"What's that?"
"Let's grab some food first and then bring it back to the train."
"Sounds like a plan," Liam grinned.
"There's a little café not far from here. We could get something to go."
"Perfect."
"C'mon, Chance," Riley called. "You're eating too!"

New Traditions
Trystan may have lived in New York for years, but Thanksgiving was always just another day. This year, he's spending it with Carolina, Tommy, and their friends. He's impressed with their celebration's Latin flair and their generous, unique traditions, all of which lead him to a bit of self-discovery.
Book: Crimes of Passion (Post Book 2) Pairing: Trystan Thorne x F!MC (Carolina Rose) Other Characters: Tommy Rose, Luke Watanabe, Ruby Webster, Mafalda Ginovesi. Words: 1,800 Rating: Teen A/N: This had been in the works already, but I appreciated the ask as well! Participating in @choicesnovchallenge - Thanksgiving / @choicesholidays - I'm thankful for you... / @choicesficwriterscreations Holiday Event

Carolina stood quietly in a darkened corner behind the bar, eyes focused on her task. The day before Thanksgiving was always chaotic at her uncle's bar, but she had only one care in the world: slicing plantains with meticulous precision. She was grateful for the repetitive task, for while it was a happy chaos that surrounded her, it kept her out of the melee.
“Luke!” Rubby yelled from across the room, eyeing the seating chart on her clipboard. “What did you do? This table isn’t supposed to be here.”
“If we put it this way, it will give us more room to walk behind and serve food,” he insisted.
“Yes. But if we put it this way, we can’t put another against the wall. If the same amount of people show up as last year, we won’t have room for everyone to sit.”
“But....”
“But nothing,” Mafalda scolded from a few feet away. “I personally put Ruby in charge of the seating for a reason. We aren’t expecting as many as last year; we’re expecting more, and we have to maximize seating.”
“Fine,” Luke sighed begrudgingly. “I’ll defer to the boss.”
“And in this situation, that’s clearly Ruby,” Carolina winked. “Right, Luke?”
Luke was about to retort when he was interrupted by Uncle Tommy running through the room.
“Coming through! Coming through! I have the pernil!”
“He has the Pernil,” Mafalda sang joyfully. “Now, we know it’s going to be a party!”
“Yeah, too bad it’s not for us,” Carolina chuckled.
Tommy turned to his niece with sympathetic eyes. “Sobrina, you know the rules. You’ll have plenty of your own pernil... tomorrow.”
“I know, I know... I’m just teasing! I love our community Thanksgiving. I wouldn’t change it for anything!”
There was a loud tap on the front door, and Carolina’s face brightened visibly when she saw Trystan outside, his arms loaded with boxes filled with baked goods. She and Ruby both rushed to greet him.
“Hello, gorgeous!” Carolina beamed, placing a quick peck on Trystan’s ice-cold cheek as Ruby helped take the falling boxes from his hands.
“Thanks for the help there, Carolina,” Ruby teased.
But Trystan wouldn’t have it. “Hey! Priorities!” He took off his jacket, and a chill ran through him. “God, it’s cold out there.”
“Well, perhaps you should begin dressing for New York winters,” Carolina reprimanded.
“Says you!” Luke interrupted. “I’ve never seen you in more than that unlined leather.”
“Yes, but style matters to me... and besides... I don’t complain about the cold.”
“She’s got you there,” Ruby agreed.
“No matter,” Carolina dismissed, “Because I have the perfect way to help you warm up.”
Trystan raised a brow as he took Carolina under his arm. “Oh, do you now?”
But she pushed him away with a giggle. “Easy there, tiger! I meant you could work up a sweat helping me slice the plantains. We have five pastelons to make, and they’re not going to cut themselves.”
He followed her behind the bar and lifted the largest plantain with an adolescent amusement.
“Oh, slicing phallic-shaped fruits into pieces... that’s how I’m going to warm up.”
“Yes it is,” Mafalda smirked. “And I’d be careful if I were you! Because Carolina finds that task very relaxing.”
“Yeah, I’d be good if I were, pal,” Luke cautioned.
Trystan wrapped his arms around Carolina and pulled her into a kiss. “As if I’d be anything but."
“Iww. Gross,” Luke protested. But Carolina wouldn’t have it.
“Hey, you started it!”
Tommy came in from the kitchen with some appetizers, and the group gathered around the bar as Trystan and Carolina continued slicing away.
“So, what are pastelons anyway,” Trystan asked.
“It’s sort of like a lasagna, but instead of layered pasta, we use layers of sliced plantain,” Carolina advised.
“And it’s delicious,” Ruby salivated. “Pastelon, Tommy’s pernil, and some arroz con gandules... that’s all I need to be happy in this world.”
“Good to know," Luke deadpanned.
“I meant foodwise, of course.”
“While everything sounds delicious, I’ve done some research, and this isn’t traditional Thanksgiving fare.”
“It’s traditional Thanksgiving fare when you’re dating a Puerto Rican from the Bronx, my love,” Carolina smiled.
“It’s not as if we won’t have the rest,” Tommy piped in. “I have three turkeys in the oven right now, along with stuffing, and my mashed potatoes are to die for.”
“What about yams?” Trystan asked, earning him peculiar looks from all in attendance.
“Honey... no one eats yams.”
“You’re kidding me!” He gasped in mock horror. “Now, my entire holiday is ruined! I was led to believe there would be yams!”
“Babe, you’re making far too big a deal out of this.”
“I know. I yam,” Trystan grinned.
Carolina playfully smacked his arm as the others groaned.
“How did we end up with him?” Luke asked.
“It was sheer luck on your part!” Trystan stated. “So, how did this evening's tradition begin?”
“Opening the bar to the community?” Carolina asked. “We’ve been doing this since I was very young. My father and Uncle Tommy always loved doing this, and I followed in their footsteps.”
Tommy poured some wine for all as he began to share the story.
“Jimmy and I were working late one year, and a woman came in quite distraught. Her husband had recently died, leaving her with three young children. She didn’t have the money for a proper Thanksgiving dinner, but it had been her late husband’s favorite holiday, and she didn’t want the kids to go without. Jimmy and I just shot each other a look; we knew what we were going to do. We told her not to worry about it and, on Thanksgiving Day, we brought everything her family needed to her apartment. It was the best feeling to know we could help.”
“This has always been a low-income community,” Carolina added. “So, there are a lot of families who have to do without.”
“She’s right,” Tommy nodded. “But it isn’t only about money. We have a large immigrant community, and sometimes they don’t have family here, and it can be hard to spend the holiday's alone."
“Exactly,” Mafalda agreed. “Not to mention, everyone isn't blessed with a loving family. Some choose not to spend the holidays at home because their family isn’t accepting.”
“Amen to that,” Carolina agreed. “I remember when I told my father and Tio that I was bisexual. They were great, but many of my friends were not that fortunate. Let’s just say the holidays can be the most depressing time of the year for many people, and we like to do our part to help that where we can.”
“So we decided we’d always open The Drunk Tank to the community on Thanksgiving Eve. No one is turned away.”
Carolina nodded in agreement. “And once local residents and businesses learned about this, they began to give us donations, and it’s gotten bigger every year that we’ve hosted.”
“Yep, and all we ask is that everyone pay it forward with an act of kindness to others.”
“This is a beautiful tradition,” Trystan said, his voice rife with emotion. “So you have Thanksgiving with your community today and again with the family tomorrow.”
“Almost,” Tommy corrected. “We get to have Thanksgiving with our family today and tomorrow. Our extended family today, and our closest family tomorrow.”
“We don’t do much eating tonight,” Luke informed. “Tonight, we’re here to serve. But tomorrow, make sure you wear your yoga pants, Trystan, because eating becomes a competitive sport.”
“Yoga pants?” Trystan asked. “I don’t think I own yoga pants.”
“Well, then you better squeeze into a pair of mine,” Carolina insisted. “Because, trust me, you won’t survive the day without the benefit of spandex.”
Shortly after, people began to arrive, and the flow never seemed to end. It was hard work, but the team worked together, and you could feel the joy and electricity in the air. Time passed quickly, and before they knew it, Tommy was locking the door after the last guest left shortly after midnight. After quickly cleaning up, Tommy happily lined up glasses on the bar for one last tradition.
“Oh! This is my absolute favorite part of the night!” Mafalda grinned. "Coquito!"
“This isn’t my favorite part of the night,” Carolina said, grabbing her delicious coconut, rum and spice beverage. “This is my favorite part of the year."
“Yeah, why don’t we have coquito year-round?” Luke asked.
“Because if we did, then it wouldn’t be so special now.” Tommy said as he raised his glass. “To another successful Thanksgiving, and to the most important thing of all... family.... which includes every one of you.”
“Hear, hear,” Ruby nodded as glasses clinked together.
Later that night, Trystan mindlessly played with Carolina’s hair as she nuzzled her head on his chest. Exhausted but still buzzing with joy, they simply reveled in the thing they were most thankful for that year... each other. Though he was silent, Carolina could tell Trystan was deep in thought.
“What’s on your mind,” she whispered. “You’re never this quiet.”
“Are you saying I’m a loudmouth?” He asked.
“Just answer my question,” she laughed. “I won’t be forced into brutal honesty on this special day.”
But Trystan refrained a moment longer, and Carolina felt when he swallowed hard. “That’s just it,” he said with a broken voice. “This day is special, and I’m sure tomorrow will be, too.”
“It will be. We are pretty casual about it, but it’s a day filled with fun, food, and the people we love.”
“It’s about... family.” Trystan paused, gently lifting Carolina’s chin to face him. “You know there are plenty of us Thorne’s; if we follow the textbook definition, it is a family.”
“Yes...”
“I’ve spent most of my life with them, and I always felt so alone. But tonight... here with you, and Tommy, and everyone... Carolina, this is the first time in my life I’ve ever spent a holiday as part of a family, a true family... and that’s all because of you.”
With tears in her eyes, Carolina leaned over and met Trystan with a warm, gentle kiss. When they eventually broke away, each wore blissful grins.
“It’s not all because of me,” she insisted. “We wouldn’t let just anyone in, you know. It took someone pretty incredible.”
“I am incredible,” he smirked. “Aren’t I?”
“Yes, you are. And you’re humble... oh, so humble.”
They both giggled as Trystan pulled her close.
“I love when you acknowledge that,” he teased. “But all joking aside... I’m so grateful for what we share. You... you’re my family, Carolina. And I never plan on letting you go."
“Damn right,” she beamed. “Because you’re my family too, and family is forever.”
~~~~ So, our Drakovian prince and New York Rican princess are happy again... I sense some drama coming soon! lol Thank you for reading!
Picket Fence
A/N: No thoughts, only rant fic about being aroflux, especially on Valentine’s. This is purely self-indulgent. I wrote this in about three hours so...there’s that lol. Anyways, I hope you like it regardless. Oh btw, Arion is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, hope that’s clear.
A/N2: Please excuse any grammatical errors. / Trystan Thorne belongs to Pixelberry; Arion is mine.
Book: Crimes of Passion
Pairing: Arion dela Rosa & f!Trystan Thorne (Platonic)
Song Inspiration: I Don’t Wanna Fall in Love - Addison Grace
Word Count: 632
© 2023 writing-not
Trystan Thorne’s eyes graze over their body; eager, but not enough. Arion lies in a sea of gnashing waves of white silk, hand to moonlit eyes. A storm rages outside; the rain banging its fists upon the windows of their apartment, ignored. It shouldn’t be. It should’ve been loved for what it was. It should’ve been known.
This isn’t about the rain.
“Leave me alone, Trystan.” Arion moans, rolling onto their stomach.
“And let this migraine take you? I refuse.” She replies pointedly, gesturing to the cup of chamomile tea in her hands.
Trystan steadily lowers herself on the panel of the wooden floor bed. She reaches for Arion but her hand abruptly stops, withdrawing back into her lap. For a moment she’d forgotten how they didn’t like to be touched; she scolds herself for it. And her worry grows.
Up and down, there and back again. Arion’s back arches as their breaths are muffled by a pillow squished between them and the mattress.
“Chocolate actually gives me migraines; have I ever told you that?” Arion says quietly. Trystan only catches their voice like the wind, gently yet out of reach.
Trystan lets the minute escape and lets the moment play like a movie. (It might as well have been.) The porcelain cup she’s holding melts and becomes one with her hand as she forgets its presence, its warmth subsides like embers in a hearth.
“And here I thought that you were some kind of impenetrable robot, but no!” She laughs, setting aside the cup on their nightstand. “You and I are the same after all, hm? Heart, bones, cartilage, and all. I’m surprised.”
“Is this supposed to be romantic?’
“Whatever you want it to be.”
“Haha, very funny.”
Trystan slowly arches an eyebrow. “I mean it.”
Arion turns their head, half of their face still buried into the pillow. They also didn’t know. It was hard not knowing what they felt, especially on Valentine’s Day (well, even on any day really), given that their romantic attraction ever so fluctuates during the span of a day. In the morning they could fall head over heels for a long-haired man with a turtleneck on the train, in the afternoon they could despise love and all its oddities, in the evening they could feel nothing towards that ever-pervading emotion. It was all perplexing and ambiguous. Day by day, Arion falls into a spiral and it never ends.
“Do I have to know?” Arion frowns, clutching the pillow closer to their chest. “Do I need to know?”
And Trystan’s heart crumbles.
Arion purses their lips before responding. “Am I not a “freak” in your eyes as mamà says?” They kept a smile with no warmth. “She told me so after demanding a grandchild yet again. She told me I was selfish and cold. I did nothing wrong, Trys.”
Trystan’s heart falls, it’s all it can afford to do. Falling. Falling. Falling.
“I’m sorry.” Her eyes shift to the window, she looks to some kind of distance she tries to find; it doesn’t exist, neither does the answer. All she has is reassurance and hopes that it will be enough. (It won’t be but… she tries.) “For what it’s worth, whatever your mother told you earlier, she was wrong about all of it, alright? She didn’t deserve to tell you all those things.”
A tear falls from Arion’s eye. No reaction.
“What can I do for you now, hm? I’m right here if you need me.” Trystan whispers.
They sputter before the words finally fall out. “I– Is it ok if you can just stay here. You don’t have to do anything. I just need to know that you’re here. You’re on my side.”
A look comes in passing.
Bedside, the tea sits cold.
Never Been Kissed
Book: Open Heart, Book 2 Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Dr. Sawyer Brooks) Rating: General Category: Fluff Word count: 1.8K Summary: Ethan helps Sawyer with one of her New Year’s resolutions. A/N: I woke up with this idea yesterday and hammered it out last night so I could post it in time for NYE. Please forgive any errors. Happy New Year!🎉🪩🍾
Events/Prompts: • Participating in CFWC Holidays 2023 • Participating in Choices Flashfics Week #66 Prompts 🫤3: “How much worse could it get?” • Participating in Choices Holidays Winter 2023
Sawyer had never kissed anyone on New Year's Eve.
Every year, for as long as she could remember, she rang in the new year with her family. The tradition was due in part to the fact that it was also her father's birthday. Twelve years away at school, but she always returned home for the holidays, never missing the annual event. Even last year, her first in Boston, she was able to make it home. A trip made possible by the plane ticket Ethan had given her for Christmas, a generous thank-you gift for helping him with Naveen.
In recent years their family party grew to include significant others and their babies. Everyone had a special someone to kiss at midnight. Everyone but Sawyer.
When she broke the news to her parents that she was staying in Boston for New Years, there was disappointment on both ends of the line. A couple weeks had passed since she returned to work, and the medical leave she took to recuperate from the attack had already eaten up more time than she could afford. She couldn’t spare any more time away. Her parents were understanding, and Sawyer found a silver lining in that she finally had a special someone to kiss at midnight this year.
At least that was the case until she looked at her schedule a week later. Zaid accommodated her request for extra shifts, allowing her to make up clinic hours. But given that she worked a double on Christmas, she didn’t expect another on New Year’s Eve. She should have known better. It was one of the busiest nights of the year in the emergency department.
🎉🪩🍾🎉🪩🍾🎉🪩🍾🎉🪩🍾
After a quick coffee break at Derry’s, Ethan helped Sawyer put her coat back on. He took the cream colored beanie that she pulled from her pocket and fitted it over her head. “Nice bunny tail,” he said, gently swatting the giant cotton ball sewn to the top of her knit hat.
“Watch it, Mister, or you won’t be getting any of this tail for a while,” she turned and shook her rear end at him.
Just before they headed back inside the hospital, Sawyer squeezed his hand. “Sure you don’t want to volunteer and stay for another shift?” she asked, looking up at him with a puppy dog pout.
The first time Sawyer returned to work after the attack, with her landlord in tow, it had been a complete disaster. Though things had gone better this time around, Ethan kept an eye out for any signs of distress. She had her ups and downs, and he couldn't help but worry about her. "Is everything all right?"
“Yeah, it’s fine. You don’t need to worry. I promise,” she tried to assure him, sensing his concern. “I’m just going to miss you tonight, that’s all.”
Ethan could still feel something was off, but dropped it.
🎉🪩🍾🎉🪩🍾🎉🪩🍾🎉🪩🍾
It took him twice as long to get home with New Year’s revelers heading to their festivities around town. After a light dinner, a satisfying workout, and a long, hot shower, Ethan settled on his couch. The apartment suddenly felt too quiet, too empty. He missed his girlfriend. Since Sawyer began picking up double-shifts, they had not had a lot of time alone. Sure he got to see her at work. But it wasn’t the same as curling up together on the couch and talking about their day, or kissing whenever they felt like it, or waking up in each other’s arms.
Hoping it would provide some distraction, he turned on the television and watched the local news. When the weather segment began, Ethan grew bored. He reached for a book on the coffee table, finding Sawyer’s notebook underneath. He recognized it from their DT meetings, where she took meticulous notes and sometimes doodled during their brainstorming sessions. She must have forgotten it the last time she stayed over.
The way her mind worked fascinated him. She could be discussing the differences between apples and oranges when… Click! An idea would pop into her head to check their patient for uneven skin texture, giving her the lead needed to reach a successful diagnosis.
Curious to know her thoughts about their current, undiagnosed patient, Ethan picked up the notebook and flipped through the pages. They were filled with detailed notes from each of their team meetings. Random side notes littered the margins. Tacos or burritos? He chuckled, wondering if the question was part of a diagnostic brainstorm, or if she was just hungry at the time. Turning the page to a more recent entry, he found Sawyer’s notes from a meeting he conducted last week. Ethan had attempted to inspire the team by conducting a goal-setting exercise. He asked everyone to jot down a few professional and personal goals for the new year.
Several emotions washed over Ethan as he read her goals. She was cute as hell, but his heart broke a little knowing how much weight she still carried on her shoulders.
On the TV, the New Year’s Eve countdown now aired. A correspondent stood in front of a large crowd of people gathered in Times Square. “…And according to folklore, a kiss at midnight brings luck and strength to that relationship for the rest of the year. So, who will you be kissing when the clock strikes twelve?” Ethan looked down at her list again. Is that why she wanted me to stay tonight? Was that the reason she seemed so… disappointed?
A timer in the corner of the TV screen counted down the time to the famous ball drop. Forty minutes until midnight.
Ethan never paid any mind to superstitions. Thinking back to the events of the past two years, he thought to himself, “How much worse could it get?” He shuddered at the thought, bolting to his closet where he threw on a pair of jeans and a sweater, then slipped into his running shoes. He was not going to take any chances, and most importantly, he was intent on giving Sawyer whatever she desired. If she wanted a kiss at midnight, he would make it happen. Keys and jacket in hand, the door to his apartment slammed shut behind him.
Ethan stepped into the atrium and checked the clock behind the reception desk. Fifteen minutes until midnight.
He pushed through the doors of the emergency department a couple minutes later. It was eerily quiet. The calm before the storm. In about an hour, the waiting room would be packed with reckless and unfortunate party-goers. He didn’t see Sawyer anywhere, but wanting to confirm, Ethan inquired at the triage desk.
“Happy New Year, Dr. Ramsey,” the triage coordinator greeted.
“Happy New Year, Anabel. Have you seen Dr. Brooks?”
“About an hour ago? She mentioned trying to catch a quick nap before the midnight rush.”
“Thank you.”
Ethan made his way to the on-call room nearest the emergency room. When he opened the door, the beds were full of sleeping doctors, but Sawyer was not among them. After a quick peek in the cafeteria, he headed up to the Internal Medicine floor. The hallways were dim and quiet at this time of night. He checked all the obvious places. Staff lounge, empty. Resident locker room, empty. The on-call room was also empty, save for a pager that someone had left behind. Duh!
“Could you page Dr. Brooks, please?” he asked the nurse sitting behind the circular desk. Not a moment later, the pager in his hand started to vibrate.
Of course. He wondered if this was the universe mocking him for his skepticism.
Jan, the night supervisor, quietly exited the patient’s room behind him. “Hey kiddo, I thought you went home a few hours ago?” She noticed the pager in his hand. “Did someone page you?”
“Uh, no. Jan, I’m looking for Sawy- for Dr. Brooks? Have you seen her?” he asked.
“No, hon, but I’ve seen several folks making their way up to the helipad for the fireworks. Maybe she’s up there?”
Yes! She loves fireworks. Ethan looked at his wrist. Five minutes until midnight.
After thanking the nurses, he walked with purpose to the elevator bank and punched the up button. Come on, come on! Four minutes to midnight.
When he reached the seventh floor he jogged to the helipad entrance. The automatic glass doors slid open and a frigid gush of wind hit his face. With only the light of the helipad beacons, Ethan frantically scanned the gathered crowd. She’s not here. Dammit!
He checked the time again. Two minutes until midnight.
As he turned to head back inside, he noticed a large chunk of snow falling from above. It fell from a secluded section of the rooftop that few knew how to access. Naveen referred to it as “the bird’s nest.” He shared its location with Ethan, and in turn, Ethan shared it with Sawyer. It was a place they could go when they needed a minute of peace. To his surprise, he saw what appeared to be a snowball floating in midair. Wait… not a snowball. A bunny tail!
When he reached the stairwell, he glanced at his watch again. One minute until midnight.
Climbing the stairs three at a time, he quickly ascended two flights of stairs, bursting onto the ninth floor. Thankfully these hallways were lined mostly with administrative offices and were completely abandoned given the late hour. Sprinting to the end of the long hallway, Ethan pulled on a door marked “Authorized Personnel Only.” He launched himself through the dark doorway and blindly climbed another flight of stairs.
Just as his hand reached the door at the top of the staircase, he heard an explosion on the other side. Midnight.
Sawyer jumped when she heard the steel door crash against the stone exterior of the building. Turning around, she saw Ethan. Steam puffed from his mouth as he tried to catch his breath.
With the sky sparkling behind her, he grabbed the sides of her face, and crashed his lips onto hers. Once the urgency had subsided, he changed the angle and kissed her again. Deep and tender. When he pulled away to give his lungs a chance to expand, Sawyer could see the fireworks reflected in his eyes.
Tucked in his embrace, she smiled up at him. “What are you doing here?”
“Helping you keep your New Year’s resolutions.”
She looked at him confused. “Wait... how did you know about that?” She hadn’t remembered mentioning it to him, or anyone for that matter.
“You left your notebook at my apartment.” He reached into his pocket and handed her the pager. “You also left this in the on-call room.”
“Shit. Please don’t tell my boss.”
“You’ll have to silence me with another kiss,” he smirked.
“Well, if that's what it takes...” she laughed, standing on her tiptoes. She brushed her lips against his and whispered, “Happy New Year, Ethan.”
Before claiming her lips again, he whispered back, “Happy New Year, Rookie.”
Choices Pride Month
In celebration of Pride Month, CFWC is delighted to host Pride Bingo.
The event will run from June 1st through June 30th. Two lucky winners will win a fanart commission from the lovely and talented @rosefuckinggenius.
The first winner will receive a 2-person, half-body flat color sketch, and thanks to Rose's generosity, there will be a second prize of a 1-person, full-body flat color sketch, as well! The winners will be selected at random and announced on Saturday, July 1st.
For contest rules and guidelines, please see below and...
Happy Pride!!!
Event Rules & Guidelines:
Write fics based on the bingo card categories.
If you write one fic, you get one chance at winning a prize.
If you write more than one fic and get "Bingo" - three in a row vertically, horizontally, or diagonally - you will get three chances to win a prize. (3 chances max per person).
Each fic can only be assigned to one category... so a fic about selecting an outfit to wear to the Pride parade could be in the Pride Parade or Fashion categories, but not both.
Fics must be about Pixelberry Choices LGBTQ+ pairings or characters (canon of fanon).
Fics must be a minimum of 750 words to be prize eligible. (Shorter fics will be shared and included on the event masterlist, but will not be prize eligible).
Only submitted fics are eligible for a prize. @choicesficwriterscreations must be tagged and use the tag #cfwc pride bingo. (Fics found in main tags that meet event criteria will be shared and included on the event masterlist, but they will not be prize eligible.)
Fics can be cross-listed with other fandom Pride events; in fact, we encourage you to do so. Please see a list of other fandom events below.
NSFW and mature-themed fics will be accepted, but they must be rated Mature or Explicit, and any trigger warnings should be noted.
The fic writer must be following @choicesficwriterscreations to be eligible for the prize.
While anyone can participate in the event, creators who have won an art commission from a CFWC contest in the last 6 months and CFWC mods/admins are not eligible for the prize.
About the categories:
The story must focus on characters that are part of the LGBTQ+ community.
We have purposely left the categories broad to encourage participation. Here are some suggestions if you need them.
Pride Parade: planning or attending a pride parade; memories of a past parade; upset that they have to miss the parade because they're sick/have to work; planning their outfit for the parade - pride parade related.
Fashion/Trends: talk about your character's style; trends in the community they like - or dislike; planning a special outfit for pride; ways they express themselves through fashion/trends, etc.
First Date/Kiss: their first-ever; their first with a new person; planning on asking someone out for a first date; talking about a disastrous first date; returning home from their very last first date, because this is the one, etc.
History: We all know about Stonewall (and if you don't, we can send you links!), but this is not limited to any one event, person, or nation. Literally anything about LGBTQ+ history will be accepted.
Coming Out... or not: Why do we include "or not"? Because not everyone believes you have to come out (do straight people make an announcement?). If your character did come out, tell us their story; if they didn't, tell us why. A fic about multiple characters discussing their thoughts on this issue. If a character didn't come out - how did people react when they learned? Anything about coming out... or not.
Gender Identity: What was your character's earliest memory of struggling with their identity; how did people in their lives react; do people respect their choices/pronouns, etc.; tell us a story about how they are now happily living the life they were meant to live, etc.
Family: Was their family accepting or not? Tell us about their found family. How do they create their own family, traditional or otherwise? Proposals, weddings, babies, moving in together, raising kids/pets, divorcing/breaking up, adding someone to (or someone leaving) the polycule. Anything related to family life.
Music & Art: Can be incorporated in any way. An LGBTQ+ artist that inspired them; how the character expresses themselves through music/art; dancing at a club; drag performances; hosting an exhibit of LGBTQ+ artists, you name it.
Other fandom PRIDE events:
Again, you can cross-list your fic with other Choices Pride events. We encourage you to do so! Here are some taking place this month. If you know of others, please let us know. We'd be happy to include them here!
@choicespride is hosting Pride Month Celebration
Pride Month is one of the prompts for @choicesjunechallenge
Also what made you create your MC /OC what was your inspiration?
Thanks for the sweet ask, @peonierose and very sorry for the late answer. I still have a lot asks and requests to do . May I present you my cute two OCs instead? You might recognize them if you have seen -> this edit post <- of mine before.
When she gets older, she developes as a secret crush on a friendly teen fae prince (new OC) who's 17 in human age.
Jason Ryder:
Adoptive son of Alex & Nik Ryder
Eldest child
Lost his birth parents in the age of 5 by the claws of a mysterious monster and got adopted by Nik and Alex. Especially Nik wanted to because he had experienced this once before too. Elissa was 3 years old then. Jason knows about the World of Night since the day his real parents died.
Nicknames: Jace, Nik-Junior, Ryder
Age: 17
Likes: video-games, sports, animals
Dislikes: Monsters, "the evil guys"
Nik's little hero
Elissa's overprotective big brother
Rejected to become the future heir of Lamrian which means the next one would be his sister, Elissa. He rather wants to become a nighthunter like his dad, Nik.
Creating my OCs was no inspiration from anything (I think??), it's just cute if my favorite pairing Alex & Nik get married and have children. Let me live my imagination, okay.
University of Cordonia, Capital
Liam’s POV:
“Sir, Lady Sophia has left you a message.” Bastien looked delighted as he held my phone up for me to grasp.
My head spun with a surge of conflicting emotions and energy. Fear and anticipation gripped my heart in an iron fist. Hope was winning out, but only barely. It was a good thing too; otherwise, I could've leapt for joy at those five seemingly innocent words. ‘...has left you a message.’ Bastien knew how desperately I needed to hear those words from him.
I tried to steady my racing heart.
I had to remember how to breathe.
It was impossible for me to think straight knowing Sophie was out there somewhere. It was agony trying to focus on anything else. She has always been brave and resourceful, but she is also no superhero. Anything could have happened to her. I do not want to imagine a world without her, especially if something had happened while I was unable to be by her side. I tried to keep positive and hope for the best, but I wasn't convinced I'd ever get her message. Still, I would have to have patience. I would have to have hope.
Everything in my heart and mind was screaming for Sophie. My soul was empty without her. It is amazing how a little text message, something that took seconds, could instantly bring the world back into focus. Suddenly, everything mattered again.
Her message was beautiful. Even without saying my name, I could see how much she loved me, and how she understood how worried I was. It was clear from her message that she was not upset with me for being gone. She understood my duties to Cordonia. With her simple but thoughtful message, she managed to soothe my aching soul and fill it with love and hope.
"...Don't worry about me. Just focus on what's needed right in front of you. I love you and look forward to seeing you soon."
A shaky laugh escaped my throat. A tear leaked from my eye as I continued staring at Sophie's beautiful message on my phone. My guards glanced at me and kept their distance, knowing me well enough to give me my privacy. Her words had the desired effect that settled me like nothing else would have. It gave me the focus I needed to deal with the mess left behind on the steps of the auditorium.
But I needed to feel her; to reassure myself of her safety.
Malic Motor Hotel/Emergency Safehouse
Liam, followed closely by Bastien and Drake, pushed the hotel doors open, the crisp ding of the door's bell brought all conversation to a halt. The employees and guests of the hotel suddenly stared, but quickly dropped to curtsy and/or bow in respect.
A brief time later, outside the Malic hotel, the sleek royal motorcade stopped at the entrance, under the vigilant gaze of Cordonian Police officers and local onlookers. When the SUV door was pushed open and Liam stepped out, everyone on the street was completely stunned. The paparazzi quickly moved forward in an attempt to capture the rare scene, but the Royal guard moved quickly to keep them at a distance, ensuring Liam's safety and privacy.
For the residents of the area, they know Liam is here for the tragedy, but most of them would never expect that a real royalty would come over at this hour to inquire about the injured. This shows just how concerned and generous the crown prince of Cordonia was for their welfare. It warmed their hearts to see him walking in the direction of the hotel, leaving behind a strong, imposing, and admiring aura.
After being escorted by the hotel concierge, Liam stood in front of the door for room 302. Bastien lifted his hand and rapped on the wooden frame. The hollow sound at once reverberated in the corridor, sounding just like his heart, beating like a drum now, Liam thought to himself.
The lock clicked open, and the handle was turned. Liam could not wait another moment. The moment the door opened, and he saw her, a moment of freezing, timelessness and perfect clarity overtook him. Sophie stood before him in the hotel room. Sophie, with her natural, soft beauty. She looked a bit tired and out of sorts, but she was whole, and in that instant, all was right in the world. His Sophie, alive and safe, stood before him.
In an instant, he knew what needed to be said. What she needed. All other things faded away, the guests in the hall, his security, Drake, Bastien; it was only the two of them.
He looked at her intensely; so profoundly, he could not breathe. With a soft smile, he simply said, "My Love..." and wrapped her tightly in his strong embrace. She could feel every inch of his toned body and feel the tremble of relief and suppressed tears of joy from his soul. His emotions were exposed for her alone, but still, he does not want her to see him cry. Her mind emptied itself of the chaos of the night before and was overwhelmed by the happiness and relief of reunion with Liam. She pressed her face into his firm chest and took a deep breath, letting the intoxicating masculine and his familiar cologne calm her even more. Nothing was said, nothing was needed. The unspoken words between them were loud and clear.
“Never again, Sophie. Never again, do I ever want to be away from you!” Liam’s breath rustled her hair, as he pulled back to gently cradle Sophie’s head in his hands. He brushed his thumbs over her cheeks to wipe the tears away that were now falling rapidly as she cried in relief.
He gently pulled away from her just a bit. Lifting her chin up slightly with his finger, he looked into her deep blue eyes and uttered the words his soul had longed to say, "I love you." The intensity in his eyes was palpable; the raw passion and the deep feeling of utter truthfulness clear.
"I love you too." Sophie’s eyes sparkled as the words softly rolled off her tongue, watching his lips. Liam ran his thumb gently over her bottom lip as his crystal blue eyes swept over hers; the corners of her eyes had a moment of wetness and sadness. The grief and terror of the previous night struck Sophie once again, and more tears slipped down from her eyes. Without hesitation, Liam reached out, and wiped her tears and held her in his strong arms until the quivering and shivers came to stop. His tender look, his warmth and breath comforted Sophie, immediately easing her burden and allowed her to have another moment of calm.
Gently, she finally extricated herself from his arms and the warmth of his body, to allow him into her room. Liam crossed the threshold, stepping forward in a fluid stride, followed closely by Bastien and Drake, never breaking contact with Sophie by lacing her fingers with his.
"Oh!" Sophie started a bit when she realized Hana was sitting on the sofa. "Liam, this is my roommate, Hana. Hana, you have not officially met Liam, this is-"
"...Just Liam. Hello Hana. It is a pleasure to meet you." Liam nodded and smiled.
"It is an honor to meet you, Liam." The words tumbled out of Hana’s mouth as the reality of the situation hit her. The atmosphere and awkward silence were broken swiftly by Drake.
"Hello, Hana." His voice sounded brusque, his brow a bit wrinkled as he sat in the chair furthest from everyone. His eyes traveled over her as he said, "you seem familiar ... but not."
"No! I'm definitely a newcomer." She smiled, a bit embarrassed, but friendly. She noticed that he had looked at her with more than casual interest. Sophie watched them with an air of bewilderment, unaware that Liam noticed the twinkle in his old friend's eye and made a mental note to ask Drake about it later.
"Taylor, it's fantastic that you found a friend. I'm glad you didn't have to spend last night by yourself."
"I just got lucky, Drake; I suppose. Hana was kind and generous enough to help me."
Sophie started telling the story of how Hana helped her and how she was instrumental in getting outside information about the attack with her cell phone. The next several minutes were dedicated to relaying all that had happened at the graduation. When she had finally finished, there was silence in the room. Sophie looked from one person to another.
"What? What is it? Tell me." Sophie asked apprehensively.
"I'm relieved," said Liam, finally, not knowing if she realized the extent of the attack. "It is all we can do at the moment. In the coming days and weeks, the details are going to start trickling in, and we will figure out who, the why and the what happened."
He crossed the floor to the hotel room window and drew the curtains aside. Sophie went over, leaning slightly toward him to catch a view of the sun peeking its way out of the clouds above. The sunlight shone down like a gentle kiss on their faces, reminding them there was hope, even on days such as these. Liam took her hand in his and interlaced their fingers, and for the second time, the only sound they could hear was the reassuring sound of their breathing and the soothing comfort of their touch.
Hana, Drake and Bastien quietly watched their interactions, keeping themselves on quiet standby. Hana was touched and astounded that the crown prince was not shy to openly express his affection for her. Bastien, as King Constantine’s personal guard, had seen Liam as a child and his entire adolescence. He was proud of the man he had become; a thoughtful leader with a profound compassion and loving nature. In the time he had been assigned his bodyguard, he had never seen him care so deeply about a lady as he did about Sophie.
After an extended moment, Liam gently caressed his thumb across her knuckles.
"I'm glad you are safe, my love. However, it is time we got back to work. We need to gather information, plan the next course of action and do our best to make sure something like this never happens again."
"Okay," Sophie replied calmly, feeling a small jolt of reality hitting her.
"But first,” Liam squeezed her hand, looking deep into her eyes. The reddened skin of her injury on her forehead as a reminder. "You need to have the royal doctor examine you. Let's get you some medical attention."
Street level, outside the Malic Hotel
As Sophie walked alongside Liam, her nerves began to settle slightly. She was not looking forward to being poked and prodded by strangers, but she knew, however, that Liam wanted to make sure she had not sustained any serious injuries. Having convinced her new friend to join her, Hana accepted the offer to get checked out as well.
Liam and his security team escorted Sophie and Hana to the waiting royal cars. Sophie had never been driven around like a real member of the royal family, but at the moment, she didn't really care. She was far too preoccupied. Liam was with her now, and that was all she cared about.
As the Royal motorcade drove off, Bastien tapped Drake on the shoulder and pointed him to a few police officers in the area. "There, --some of the Cordonian National Guard are among the officers investigating this attack. See if you can gather any intelligence from them and determine if Maxwell or anyone else needs urgent medical attention."
Drake gave a small smile and nodded, "on it." He went over and approached a tall police officer with his Cordonia-issued badge on display. He flashed a smile and clapped the officer's back. "Excuse me, buddy, I heard you were leading the investigation here. I'd like to get your help to search for my missing friend. His name is Maxwell Beaumont. I want to make sure he's alright."
"Yes," the police officer answered succinctly, a bit intimidated to be standing beside someone who seemed so close with the royal guards. Quickly tapping the name into the database, he answered, "room 419.”
The walk along the endless corridor that took Drake, and the officer seemed long. When the police officer wracked his knuckles a on the door. After a few moments, the police officer glanced at Drake. "This is it. Shall I call a paramedic to check on his condition?"
Drake did not hesitate and called out, "Maxwell? Open the door." No answer. Drake raised his voice, "Maxwell? Max, it's me." Still, no sound. Drake turned back to the officer, "Open it now." The officer produced a key card and slid it through the scanner. A series of sounds came from the scanner, then a beep, and the green light lit up and the door clicked, "it's unlocked now." Drake thanked him briefly, then took hold of the metal handle and pushed it open.
"Max?" He called out as soon as he walked in. There was no response. He did a thorough search of the suite but could not find Maxwell or Daniel anywhere.
The officer, waiting patiently in the hallway, "is your friend not in there, sir?" Drake did not have any more time or patience to exchange small talk. He stormed out the door in an intimidating manner as the officer said, "I'll check the CCTV right away. Let's go and I'll show you."
“No need!” Drake answered brusquely. Before that, Drake had snapped up a small sheet of paper that was left in the corner of the coffee table. Written clearly in his friend's familiar handwriting:
'"Danny, going for food. BRB" love, Max.'
When the cars arrived at the hospital, the security team ushered Liam and his entourage to a V.I.P. entrance at the back of the hospital. Hana was at once handed off to a couple of doctors, as Sophie watched her hand slip out of Liam's grasp as a man and woman pulled her away. As much as Sophie trusted them to do what was best for her, it was still upsetting to be taken away from Liam. After a few minutes, however, she became very focused on the details of the examination before her.
The doctor led her through some basic questions about how she was feeling. Once Sophie assured them that she had not suffered any lasting damage, the doctors set to checking her for any other concerns. While they ran an ultrasound, an EKG and an entire range of other tests that seemed far too extensive, the nurse called the doctor's attention to Sophie's back. The bruising from her altercation with Neville a few days ago was slowly fading but perked the attention of the nurse and doctor.
She turned to Sophie, who was sitting on top of the examination table. "Dear, this looks like..." she muttered, inspecting it closer.
"It's from a couple days ago. I got a little clobbered during a polo match."
The doctor made a noncommittal sound before glancing over at her colleague. They exchanged a knowing nod, and Sophie could tell that they did not believe her, but thankfully, they decided not to pursue it further.... until they did.
"How did this happen," the doctor finally asked.
Sophie did not give an immediate response; but knew she was not going to tell them that she was attacked. Especially not since she was certain it would probably get back to Liam.
"Just the result of a hard collision. Nothing out of the ordinary in polo," Sophie lied, knowing they must have noticed the bruising on her back and side.
"Does this hurt when I press on it?" the doctor asked, pressing a cold stethoscope on her back. Sophie cringed and had to bite down a yelp of pain as the stethoscope was pressed right onto a deep bruise. "Hm." The doctor made another noncommittal sound and gently prodded a little lower on her back, much to Sophie's distress.
"Oh, oh no ... that hurts," she whimpered. The doctors noted that one of her vertebrae was a bit tender and her muscles seemed pretty knotted up. Sophie could almost cry from the agony of the touch.
The doctors left the room and a moment later the nurse returned to escort Sophie into a private recovery room. After closing the door the nurse left her alone in the room. Sophie closed her eyes and breathed a deep sigh. Although she had not sustained any real physical damage from her experience at the university attack, the memory of the encounter with Neville and being apart from Liam drained her energy entirely. For the time being, she should rest and heal her wounded psyche. The wait ended suddenly, and the doctor poked her head in to explain she would talk to Liam, after all, and then a quick wink before disappearing again.
After the doctor left, Sophie closed her eyes for what seemed like only a minute but was likely much longer. She awoke to find Liam in the recovery room with her, holding her hand. He sat beside her and listened intently while she relayed every excruciating detail of what had happened after the polo match. As her story reached its dark crescendo, her emotions got the better of her, and tears threatened to fall. That is when he took her in his arms, and she rested her head on his chest.
It was just the two of them, and the outside world had faded away. Every inch of the worry and fear was exposed, and the next flood of relief swept over each of them with a deep sense of cathartic comfort. Liam caressed her arm, "thank you for sharing this with me, Sophie."
In his mind, Liam wondered why she did not tell him about Neville's attack earlier at the Beaumont estate. But instead of asking directly, he chose to guide her in a more gentle way.
Her statement is calm, reasonable and meant as an explanation, not an apology. Liam stared at her a moment, remembering the conversation.
"I was planning to ... but couldn’t find the right moment. That night, you were asking me to marry you and ... and then ... then that was the farthest thing from my mind.” She said bluntly, watching his reaction carefully.
Remembering the pure joy on her face in their special spot by the river, remembering how elated she had looked while her words saying "yes" rang through his heart.
He hung his head and let his hands rub along her arms and finally joined around her shoulders to pull her in.
"Yeah, you should have," she quipped. There was a hint of playfulness and teasing in her tone, trying to ease the heaviness in the room.
"I should have taken you to Italy with me," he whispered. His voice full of remorse and regret.
A smile curled around Sophie's lips.
Liam laughed heartily, shaking his head. “My cheeky little monkey.”
He wrapped his arms tighter around her as Sophie breathed him in, overwhelmed by the rich smell of his cologne. How it clung to his skin and radiated from his very essence.
"But seriously, Liam. I was able to fight him off and he fled.” Liam contemplated, stoically, how to react. He had the overwhelming urge to protect her. How could he not punish someone who had hurt her? Neville had it out for her ... to attack her in broad daylight and risk harming her in such an egregious manner? But then he paused, thinking about Sophie's perspective. She was a stranger in a foreign land, thinking that she had no recourse or rights. As far as she was concerned, no justice would come.
Sophie extended a hand toward Liam. Their eyes locked and he swallowed hard. His blood began to boil. His intense expression caused a look of concern on her face. The image of Neville attacking her was burned into his brain. A dozen things that he could have done to make sure this would not have happened flashed through his mind.
Liam placed a calming hand atop hers, saying, "That can't happen. You should know that you can come to me for anything. I am always available for you and there will always be a means of communication. Just for you. If you are in distress, please come to me right away. I can't promise what we would do at once, but I would ensure we investigate and take every necessary precaution to avoid it happening ever again. Especially not to the future queen of Cordonia. It is an insult to me and to the Crown."
His words lingered a moment in silence as he locked eyes with Sophie and held her chin up in his gentle touch. He was proud and thankful she told him everything and grateful for her strength to fight. At the same time, it deeply troubled and rattled him knowing how bad and in danger she had been. From someone in his court, nonetheless.
"In my mind, it makes sense, as the future queen of Cordonia ... You need to be protected from any sort of harm. So, I have decided to assign a personal bodyguard as well as putting you under the protection of the crown," he stated, sounding protective and determined.
Sophie didn't respond right away. Her first instinct was to reject the offer, but she paused and let his words sink in. "I suppose it wouldn't be a bad idea to have someone watching out for me. Someone who could be on my side who I could trust.r"
"Trust me, Sophie. Your new guard will be the best choice for you," smiling at her fondly. "With their expertise, they can ensure your safety at all times. And ... it wouldn't hurt for you to get to know them and learn from them too."
Liam wrapped her in his arms, hugging her tightly. "Especially if I can't be there to personally be your bodyguard." He winked and grinned suggestively.
She smiled at his teasing and hugged him back, "thank you for everything, Liam. Thank you for rescuing me, for your unwavering support and for believing in me."
He gave her a soft, lingering kiss on her forehead. "There is nothing to thank me for, it is the least I can do. Being able to have a true, loving partner by my side, in sickness and health, to love, honor and cherish above myself. It is my pleasure. I'm only trying to hold up my end of the bargain and you're the woman I want to have a future with ... only you."
Gazing lovingly at each other, Liam drew her toward him, as she nestled against his chest. His hand on her hair, twirling his fingers through a tendril, sending shivers through her. Their faces tilted to face each other again and he cupped her chin in his hand, his eyes flickering between her lips and her eyes, Sophie leaned in toward him and their lips met in the perfect balance between longing, passion and desire. It was just enough and yet not ... in perfect unison.
They did not pull away until the nurse had entered to announce that the Royal doctor was coming to discuss the test results, after which Sophie was all set to go home. Then they exchanged another glance of admiration. Liam tucked a wayward strand of hair behind her ear and caressed the side of her face, letting his fingers wander to her chin where he raised her gaze to meet his.
"I need you to always feel safe and remember, you will always come first to me, and there will never be anything, or anyone, more important," Liam placed a kiss on the inside of her wrist and rested a palm on her cheek, stroking her smooth skin with his thumb.
"I love you so much," she whispered, drawing his lips to hers for another brief kiss. She kept her eyes closed for a moment afterwards, resting in the blissfulness of their private moment together. Then her eyelashes fluttered open, and she was greeted by a pair of blue eyes as bright and brilliant as a winter sky. Liam's hand stroked her cheek softly, brushing away a tendril of hair that had gotten loose in the tumult of the day.
Sophie giggled as the nurse wheeled the EMG (electromyography) machine into her room, breaking their embrace. She frowned, unsure why Liam didn't seem like he'd heard the sound. As she turned, Liam mouthed the words again.
"I love you."
She smiled at him fondly, shaking her head. Everything felt like it was finally returning to normal and now it was just them, taking everything at their own pace.
She couldn't hear the nurse or the doctor's soft comments. It all seemed like white noise to her. It didn't even faze her when the doctor jokingly swatted Liam's hand from her own before they began hooking Sophie up to some more equipment for the nerve conduction study.
All Sophie could focus on was Liam. The fact that he was smiling down at her, the way his hand fell on hers as he absently squeezed and let go in a calming rhythm. Everything was all about him, his presence. Sophie could no longer imagine her life without him. Liam seemed to agree. Everything in his expression was pure bliss. The sight warmed her from within, a warmth that radiated in her core, even stronger than that of the adoration, or perhaps, something more.
Day One of the @choicesfandomappreciation Kindness event. Thank you Elsa for being so supportive of us creators around here and for taking on the responsibility of hosting CFWC and sharing our creations with the fandom!
Warnings & A/N: None. Decided to include my Merida and @storyofmychoices Olivia in the quick little drabble.
“Nope. Stop. Not tonight,” Merida chuckled as Olivia pulled Casey down the hall away from Tobias and Merida stepped in front of Tobias
“Merida, darling, my favorite friend, you would not keep me from-“
“Oh yes, I would,” she laughed and stepped in front of his attempt to get around her. “And clearly you don’t know me all that well if you think I’d let you distract her. Again.”
“Mer,” he sighed with a grin.
“Nope. We are already late. She’s all your’s-“ His face lit up. “In three days,” she smirked and patted his cheek.
“Go torture Ethan. That should keep you occupied,” she chuckled with a wiggle of her fingers a wicked laugh as she joined Olivia and Casey holding the elevator for her.
“Bye, babe,” Casey grinned. “Try not to miss me too much.”
The elevator doors slid shut and Olivia cheered with a clap of her hands, “Yay! Girls weekend!”
While waiting in the lunch rush lines in the cafeteria, Sienna reminded her roommates of their party assignments. “...I’ve got the treats covered, Elijah is handling the music, Jackie is making jingle juice-”
“Hell yeah!” Elijah exclaimed, giving Jackie a high-five.
“The tree isn’t the only thing getting lit this year,” she said coolly.
“Oh, and don’t forget your white elephant gifts!” Sienna also reminded them.
“Shit, I forgot about that. What are the rules again?” Jackie asked.
“The only rule is you can’t buy anything,” Sienna answered.
“I’ll go shop the lost and found when we’re done here.”
“Or, I saw some pharma reps in the atrium earlier. You could try to hit them up for some swag,” Sawyer chimed in.
When the group reached the front of the line, a heavy arm slipped around Sawyer’s shoulders. “Thanks for saving my spot, Brooks,” Bryce winked, cutting in line.
“Do you meatheads have to cut into everything?” Jackie barked.
Bryce chomped into the apple he hadn’t yet paid for. “Yep,” he nodded with a big toothy grin. “I’m just trying to get on the naughty list. If you all want to join me, we could save Santa a trip this year,” he joked.
“You’re already looking at Santa’s favorite ho,” Jackie quipped.
“Brooksie, I actually am in a hurry. I need to scrub in for a lymphadenectomy. Do you mind?” he asked seriously.
Sawyer tilted her head to the register, gesturing for him to go ahead.
“Thanks.” When the cashier asked if they were together, Bryce said yes.
“Bryce, you don’t have to-”
He placed a hand on the small of her back. "I've got you, Ipo. I'll see you later," he promised before hurrying away.
“Girl, what are you holding out for? He's hot and he's totally into you,” Sienna teased, once Bryce was out of earshot.
Sawyer lifted her tray and turned to her friend. She opened her mouth to say something, but froze when she spotted a six-foot-four-inch, blue-eyed attending at the adjacent register. Not knowing how much he saw or heard, a blush of embarrassment colored her cheeks. Feeling like a shy teenager at a school dance, Sawyer hoped the interaction with Bryce hadn’t given her crush the wrong impression.
As Ethan raised his eyes to her, he gave no indication. Pocketing his wallet, he stoically turned and exited the cafeteria.
As their shift ended, Sawyer approached her roommates who were walking in the opposite direction down the hall.
“Locker room is that way, Brooks,” Jackie pointed.
“I know, I just need to run and check on one more patient before I clock out.”
“Do you want us to wait for you?” Sienna asked.
“No, don’t wait up. I’ll be right behind you.”
After making sure the coast was clear, Sawyer slipped behind the plastic curtain that sealed off the construction wing. Naveen spiked a fever earlier in the day, and she wanted to check on him before going home. She found him fast asleep, and after checking his monitors and medications, she quietly tidied the room. When she finished, she softly closed the door behind her, whispering, “Goodnight, Dr. B.”
On her way to dispose of some trash, Sawyer’s phone buzzed in her pocket.
Bryce knocked and let himself in, making a beeline to the kitchen to find Sienna. “Help?” he asked, lifting a roll of wrapping paper and tape.
She looked at him puzzled. “Where’s your gift?”
“You're looking at it.” He beckoned her to the living room, where he laid down on the floor.
“You’re ridiculous, you know that?” she laughed, kneeling next to him.
A few minutes later, Sienna placed the last piece of tape, securing the wrapping around Bryce’s torso. Using all of her body weight, she rolled him to his back and slid him under the Christmas tree.
“Si?” he called, his voice muffled. “Do me a favor and start the game sooner than later. I already have to pee.”
In the locker room, Sawyer traded her white coat for her winter one. As she gathered her things, her phone buzzed with an incoming call.
“Hi,” she answered.
“Hi. By any chance, are you still at the hospital?” Ethan asked.
“I am.”
“Could I ask you for a favor? I’ve had something come up at the last minute. Would you be able to stay with Naveen for a few hours?”
By now, Sawyer had come to know Ethan Ramsey well enough to know that he would not ask for help unless he was desperate. “Sure. Is everything okay?”
“Yes. I’m pressed for time right now, but I’ll explain later. I’ll relieve you as soon as I can.”
“No problem.”
“Thanks, Rookie.”
Sawyer was about to text Sienna when Danny entered the room.
“Hey, Sawyer,” he waved. “I thought you’d be at home getting ready for the party. I’m heading there now if you want a ride.”
“Danny, I’m so glad you’re here! Could you take something to Sienna for me? I’m not going to make it home for a while.”
“How come?”
She made sure they were alone and lowered her voice. “Dr. Ramsey got tied up with something and asked if I would look after Patient X for a few hours.”
“You should go and have fun with your roommates, Sawyer. I can stay,” he insisted, having been recruited by Ethan shortly after Naveen agreed to be treated.
“That’s really sweet of you, Danny, but I know you traded shifts so you could be off tonight. Besides, Sienna baked a batch of peppermint chocolate chip cookies just for you.”
“She did?” he smiled.
“Yeah. Go. Have fun. I’ll be there as soon as Dr. R gets here.”
After Danny left with what appeared to be a wrapped bedpan, she updated her roommate.
Later, Sawyer was in Naveen’s room, scrolling through Pictagram when her phone vibrated with a new text notification.
Several hours had passed when Sawyer felt a hand on her shoulder.
“Rookie?”
“Hiiiii,” she managed through a yawn.
“I’m so sorry,” Ethan apologized.
“Huh? What time is it?” Sawyer reached for her phone, noticing several missed calls from Sienna and Bryce.
“It’s almost four in the morning. I would have been here sooner, but I accidentally dozed off,” he explained, helping her to her feet.
“It’s okay. There's no doubt you probably needed it. And it’s been quiet here. His fever finally broke a little while ago.”
“Good. Go home and get some sleep,” he instructed, “I’ll tell Ines that you’ll be in this afternoon.”
“Okay.” Sawyer shouldered her bag and headed for the door. “Good night."
“Sawyer?”
“Yeah?”
“Thank you.”
With a shake of the snow from her coat, Sawyer entered her apartment and found Landry eating breakfast at the kitchen table. “Oh boy. It looks like Santa threw up in here.”
“Smells like it too,” he grumbled.
“I’m surprised you’re still going in early after…,” she circled her hand in the air, “all of this.”
“Yeah, well, not all of us are lucky enough to get preferential treatment from Dr. Ramsey.”
“Excuse me?”
“What? This is the second time he’s personally assigned you a case. To my knowledge, he hasn’t assigned cases to any of the other interns in the competition.”
“Wow. Well, maybe if you ever crack the top five, he will.” She let him chew on that as she hung her coat and walked to her room.
Bryce turned from the surgical board and spotted Sawyer approaching. “Finally coming to collect your prize, Brooksie?”
Sawyer rolled her eyes.
“What’s wrong? Do you not like your gift?”
“You’re ridiculous,” she shook her head with an amused smile.
“So I’ve been told. By the way, this gift comes with a night on the town.”
Unbeknownst to her, Dr. Ramsey inconveniently emerged from a nearby patient’s room, catching the tail end of their conversation.
“Bryce-”
But before she could protest, he backed his way down the hall. “I’ve gotta run. Check your schedule and let me know when to pick you up. And you should know, I have a strict ‘no rejections’ policy.”
She sighed deeply once his back was to her, then turned to find Ethan standing a couple feet away, his eyes focused on the tablet in his hand.
“Dr. Ramsey,” she acknowledged sheepishly.
Ethan glanced at her with a side eye. “Brooks.”
“Rrrrr! Of course he is here right now!” As they moved on to their next tasks, Sawyer told herself it was time for a heart to heart with Bryce.
"Excuse me, would you please page Dr. Ramsey?"
A few minutes later, Ethan met an attractive woman at the nurses’ station and led her away from the busybodies seated at the circular desk. As they walked down the hall, she handed him a small box. “Thank you, Jen. I really appreciate this. I’ll send you the outcome report as soon as the trial period ends.”
Stepping in front of him, Jen pulled him to the side until their shoulders hugged the wall. "It was great to see you again." She paused as a couple nurses walked past. "We had a good time last night, didn’t we?"
“It was nice to catch up.”
She didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but when Sawyer heard the familiar voice, she wondered if her ears were deceiving her.
“Listen, I would love to see you again tonight,” Jen continued, reaching for the end of his tie and running it through her fingers. “I’m staying at The Langham. Come have drinks with me and…,” she shrugged, "we can see where things go from there.”
“I-”
Stepping out from the vending machine alcove, Sawyer turned her head in their direction.
Ethan’s surprised eyes met hers, finding only hurt. He moved Jen’s hand back to her side as Sawyer spun and walked briskly in the opposite direction.
“Jen, you’ll have to excuse me. I need to go,” he apologized, watching the woman he longed for retreat and disappear from sight. “I appreciate your assistance. I will speak with you later.”
“Later tonight?”
“I’ll text you,” he said as he sidestepped her.
Ethan’s long strides carried him down the hall quickly. He nearly collided with a visitor as he rounded the corner. “I’m sorry. Excuse me.”
In the far corner of the cafeteria, Sawyer watched the snow fall in the empty courtyard. The sound of metal chair legs scraping against the tiled floor jarred her from her thoughts.
“I’ve been looking all over for you.”
“Why? Need another favor?” she said, words laced with disdain.
“Rookie, that-”
“Dr. Ramsey, I haven’t been helping you to win favor or get a leg up in the competition. If you want an intern to run errands and cover for your ass, then let me suggest Dr. Olsen. He'd be more than happy to fill that role.”
She lowered her voice, hurt replacing anger. “I canceled plans with my roommates last night, because I believed that if you were asking for help, it must have been important. If I had known I was only covering so that you could go on a date and get…” She let the rest of the sentence die on her tongue. “Sorry. I know it’s none of my business how you spend your free time, but I won’t let you take advantage of mine.”
Visibly disappointed, she avoided eye contact. Ethan keenly observed that her disappointment went beyond merely thinking he would take advantage of her kindness. If he was reading the situation correctly, it was the same disappointment he had felt seeing her with the surgical intern.
“Sawyer, let me explain. Jen works for Phlaum Pharmaceuticals. They are currently conducting a trial on a new antibiotic for sepsis. I reached out to her when I heard about it. Her team is in the area promoting a new product this week. You may have noticed her reps in the lobby. She made herself available to meet with me last night. And after some convincing, she agreed to pull some strings to get Naveen into the trial. She was here this afternoon to drop off the treatment.” Ethan pulled a small vial from his pocket and placed it on the table.
“It sounded like you convinced her all right,” she muttered.
“Rookie. I know we haven’t known each other long, but do you honestly believe I’m the type of person who would trade sexual favors? I agreed to a testimonial and a couple expo appearances. That’s all.”
“What? Can you blame me for going there? She said she had a ‘good time,’ and you told me you were late because you ‘accidentally dozed off,’ then she asked you to meet her again tonight…At. A. Hotel.”
He shook his head and pinched the bridge of his nose at her teasing dramatization, failing to hide the crack of a smile.
“So, how’d you get out of it?” she wondered.
“I told her I would text her later.”
“You don’t text.”
“Exactly.” His knee touched hers, but neither one attempted to move away. “I need to get back upstairs. Can you meet me later to review the trial protocols?”
“I have a few patients to check on. I’ll page you after?” she answered.
Ethan scooted back in his chair, but before standing, he covered Sawyer’s hand with his own.
“Sawyer, your contributions and the sacrifice of your time have not gone unnoticed. And as far as I’m concerned, you are my partner on this case. I should have filled you in on the drug trial. I just didn’t want either of us to get our hopes up.”
“Thank you, Dr. Ramsey.” When he moved to stand, she followed. “I’m finished here. I’ll head back up with you.”
The elevator doors were halfway closed when a fellow intern squeezed his way through.
“Hi, Brad,” Sawyer greeted.
“Sooo, who’s the lucky guy?” he quizzed, embarrassingly indiscreet.
“Pardon?”
“Come on, girl. Why else would you ditch us last night? Your roommates say you’re never home. You rarely come out for drinks anymore. And, you’ve parked Bryce in the friend zone.” Brad nudged her shoulder with his. “Spill the tea.”
“Sorry to disappoint, TMZ, but I’m not dating anyone. I got stuck here with a last minute case.” She made her eyes big and subtly tipped her head toward Dr. Ramsey as a warning. Luckily, Brad picked up on the cue, sparing her from having to tell any more white lies.
Ethan hid a smile, pretending not to notice the act.
“Any chance you guys will host again for New Years? You’re the only ones with an apartment big enough,” Brad asked as they exited the elevator together.
“Talk to Elijah. He’s the party planner of the group.”
Once Brad was on his way, Ethan reached for Sawyer's elbow drawing her back. “You skipped your own party?”
She shrugged. “You needed my help, and our patient wasn’t in any condition to be left alone.”
“You should have told me. I would have figured something else out…” He looked into her eyes with a sense of wonder. “Thank you. I owe you one.”
She smiled up at him. “You’re welcome.”
“So, what excuse did you give your roommates?” he asked as they walked side by side down the hall.
“About that…” she said with a tense grin, “I’m gonna need you to assign some of your cases to the other interns in the top five.”
“Come again?”
