The Future of Designer Menswear
Fashion's masculine wardrobe is experiencing a revival. From tailoring's return to gender-neutral styles being accepted more readily, menswear is experiencing an unprecedented period of evolution.
With sales of menswear increasing exponentially, luxury retailers are expanding their product lines and revamping how they sell menswear clothing - but what will this mean for designer menswear in general?
Kenneth Cole
Kenneth Cole, one of the premier fashion designers who established his name brand in 1982, is best known for combining classic and modern styles in his designs, which have quickly become highly coveted among both classicists and modernists alike. Furthermore, his company is widely respected for their environmental policies as they utilize recycled and organic materials when producing their goods; additionally they provide shoes and accessories inspired by New York culture which encompasses various cultures and styles.
Cole is widely distributed throughout department stores, specialty boutiques, his own retail shops and online e-commerce site as well as discount outlet centers worldwide. His company maintains global operations out of New York City.
David Hart
David Hart is an American designer who participates in the CFDA Men's Fund. His tightly edited fall 2020 collection showcased his interpretation of what modern men want to wear, beginning with an ivory camel suit embroidered with wildflowers on its lapels -- nodding toward today's "yeehaw agenda," then followed by extra-roomy trousers paired with a camp shirt featuring printed bananas duct-taped to its seams; an allusion to Maurizio Cattelan's now-famous plantain (and all its subsequent virtual reinterpretations).
Hart has always had an affinity for tailored clothing, beginning with neckties in 2009. Six years ago he launched a small tie line that has since expanded into an entire ready to wear collection. His designs bridge classical tailoring techniques with contemporary fits and colors for an elevated experience - silk and wool ties, Doegal Tweed suiting and trim banlon Polo Shirts all exude an effortless style and exude an aura of crooner cool!
Louis Vuitton
Louis Vuitton is one of the world's premier luxury brands, founded in France in 1854 as an aesthetic journey inspired by travel and discovery. Since then, this French fashion house has continued its expansion by designing products with ergonomic features to accommodate new modes of transport; continuing the values set forth by its founder through savoir-faire and creativity.
Louis Vuitton has an illustrious history of collaborations with prominent artists and designers. Perhaps their most acclaimed collaboration was with American streetwear brand Supreme, designed by Takashi Murakami and Stephen Sprouse in 2001. Furthermore, Murakami created his signature graffiti style collection of Louis Vuitton bags featuring his unique blend of cute art over classic monogram canvas in 2008.
In 2010, Louis Vuitton opened its most luxurious store in London: Louis Vuitton Island Maison is a three-story building featuring an open air courtyard and private terraces as well as museum and exhibition space, restaurant, bar, as well as museum exhibition space. Additionally, in 2022 the brand will launch its inaugural LVMH-owned shop in China.
MR PORTER FUTURES
Fashion industry competition is getting ever tougher for young aspiring designers to break in, which makes it hard for aspiring young designers to break in. Therefore, luxury online menswear destination Mr Porter and Klarna are teaming up to launch a global designer mentorship programme called MR PORTER FUTURES that will assist three young designers build their brands while designing and producing at least 15 pieces to launch on Mr Porter's platform. In addition, each chosen designer will also receive an intensive high-level business incubation program along with coaching sessions from leading industry mentors; plus they will share 50% of any Net Profits* generated through sales on Mr Porter over 12 months - an invaluable opportunity!
Applications from all around the world may submit applications until June 6, 2019, to be considered for mentoring by our Mentor Selection Committee. After review of applications are aggregated in June, three designers or duos who scored highest will be invited for interviews with us, then chosen three will have a two season window in which their responsible collection can be available on our platform.

The Modernist, Kirby Jean Raymond
Pyer Moss' Kirby Jean-Raymond is a revisionist. Supplanting Manhattan for the little known Brooklyn district of Weeksville for his Spring fashion show bore particular historical significance as the grounds of one of the first American free black communities. The show acted as a celebration of black achievement despite the demonstrable oppressive forces abound, praising African-American culture and legacies that may otherwise be buried in deep recesses of history. Fashion's wholesale export and appropriation of black culture ignores its deep roots and incubating environments. Taking the credit where it is due as fashions houses make huge profits on urban influence, Pyer Moss is playing piper. Messages like “SEE US NOW” scripted on cumber-bands, and oxford button downs or potent NYC-based Derick Addams' creations on elegant plisse skirts and strong feminine silhouettes add elegance to the political undertones. Jean-Raymond offers a vision of what a modern citizen of Weeksville might be: empowered, confident, political and unbelievably stylish.
The artwork, emblazoned throughout the collection is by fellow Brooklynite artist Derrick Adams, a crucial African-American contributor to Pyer Moss' potent imagery. Harkening to an imagined African-American pastoral experience, kept at bay instead by systems of racism and oppression. Beautiful paintings of African-Americans in common past times proved jarring as they recalled headlines of deadly racial tensions in the US. Pyer Moss SS19 wants to showcase African Americans in everyday, menial but meaningful scenes unencumbered by racism and prejudice. The clothing and imagery is aspirational in that sense, belief in a more understanding and compassionate world that may be on the cusp. Raymond is careful to inject a bold sense optimism tangible in the collection. Harkening to the bright side of a bleak history, and an optimistic glimpse into the future.
Also premiered were the latest addition to his collaboration with Reebok, and capsule with black-owned super-brand of the past, FUBU. Consistently, Jean-Raymond pays homage to African-American trailblazers in fashion and beyond, having already celebrated Cross Colors, the Black Cowboy and Black Lives Matter in past collections. Jean-Raymond elevates his own deep influences and those entities that enabled the strength of streetwear today and its impact on fashion and culture. He showcases the oft omitted black narrative and disregarded legacies of minorities as worthy perspectives for praise, adoration and representation. Jean-Raymond casted only black models to walk the runaway, among them were leaders and activists in music and film who align with the project of contributing to the culture rather than syphoning it for consumption. In the same way Spike Lee uses film to explore the African-American identity. Or Kendrick Lamar through his politically charged lyricism. Or Maya Angelou's resonant poetry. Black activism and political action can take place on the largest fashion stages, all while building new, potent and immersive fashion worlds. Jean-Raymond masters the tactility of the medium to convey these powerful messages. What more could you ask of a fashion brand than a positive and authentic message to rally behind.
Kirby Jean Raymond is a squarely modern designer. He is transparent, authentic, thoughtful, bold and seeks to connect his fashion to deeper social phenomena. With his recent awarding of the CFDA prize, and both mainstream appeal and industry cache, Pyer Moss seems primed to dominate. Jean-Raymond's strong identity is visible in the collection, his deep exploration of the black experience is tangible, and the emergence of a compelling fashion mind is cemented.

The Black-Owned Fashion Labels Making Waves for Spring 2021
If you want to know who’s in line to be the next fashion superstar, it helps to ask a current one. Christopher John Rogers, the CFDA’s 2020 American Emerging Designer of the Year, has his money on Edvin Thompson, whom Rogers calls “undoubtedly one of New York’s most promising stars.” Thompson landed the cover of Women’s Wear Daily right before showing the spring 2021 collection for his line, Theophilio (shown above.) He paid tribute to his home country of Jamaica via button-down shirts with corset ties at the back, sheer slipdresses, and mesh tops. And his work has already found fans in Gabrielle Union, Tinashe, and model Alton Mason, thanks to what Rogers calls his “uniquely pointed aesthetic—one that’s rooted in, and informed by, his specificities and idiosyncrasies, and doesn’t look to external references to develop itself.”

Thompson—along with Maximilian Davis, Aisling Camps, Hanifa’s Anifa Mvuemba, and House of Aama’s mother-daughter duo Rebecca Henry and Akua Shabaka—is part of a wave of talented Black designers emerging into a spotlight that has, perhaps, never shined brighter on them. While Black designers’ contributions have always been central to fashion—as in the trailblazing work of Stephen Burrows, Willi Smith, and Patrick Kelly, to name only a few—“fashion relies on visibility, and so historically, we have never had visibility in the way we translate fashion,” says Harlem-based fashion legend Dapper Dan. This historical moment, driven by the Black Lives Matter movement, has given creators that long-deserved visibility, thanks in part to the growing public push to buy from and support Black-owned brands. Fashion has an unfortunate tendency to divide the world into “moments” and “trends.” But the designers behind these labels are determined that this not be just a moment in time, but a sea change in the way the fashion industry operates when it comes to race. Their aim? To be accorded the same opportunities for longevity as their white peers.

And they’re on track for just that kind of success. Davis teased his debut spring 2021 collection on Instagram with a video that nodded to the history of Trinidadian Carnival, with its quickening beat, moody lighting, and sleek, sexy silhouettes. Selected by Fashion East, the influential London incubator that has helped launch the careers of JW Anderson and Simone Rocha, he presented a collection that ran the gamut from cutout clubwear to perfectly oversize suiting. Fashion critic Tim Blanks praised the “pin-sharp elegance” and “wildly sensual sophistication” of his work, and Net-a-Porter, Browns, and Ssense have snapped up the collection. Costanza Lombardi, a Browns womenswear buyer, says she was drawn to his work because it is “so personal, so honest, that you immediately feel the power of his storytelling. It is a translation of memories through the clothes.”

The nouveau-Victorian look shows no signs of waning, and its fans would do well to check out House of Aama. Shabaka just received a grant worth about $15,000 from the CFDA’s Designers Hub, started by model and activist Bethann Hardison. Henry and Shabaka’s work focuses on the postbellum South, rethinking Victorian silhouettes—high necks, cinched waists, regal flounces—in modern fabrics and patterns. “When [Black Americans] were emancipated from slavery, they found a way to stand upright, hold their head up, and keep moving forward,” Henry says. “What we really strive to convey in our brand is that resilience.”

Black fashion-industry veterans see this time as an opportunity for a true shift, and they are stepping up to support these newer names. Hardison started her project at the CFDA to increase her mentees’ profiles in the industry. “I got tired of people saying, ‘Where are the Black designers?’ Well, they’re around. Just because everyone is not Virgil Abloh doesn’t mean they don’t exist,” she says. With her mentees, she emphasizes the less glamorous nitty-gritty behind operating a fashion brand “to make sure they have a business that will definitely survive, that they can leave to their children,” she says. “I’m not trying to help make you famous.”
The landscape for any emerging designer right now is admittedly challenging, but Shabaka is hopeful. “I’m excited to see how fashion is being used as a way to create community now,” she says, “in spaces [where] maybe you felt like you couldn’t knock down the door.” As for Rogers, he’ll be cheering on his friend Thompson: “I can’t wait to see what he does next.”

Jean-Raymond, who this week won both the CFDA Award for Menswear Designer of the Year and a Harlem’s Fashion Row award for Designer of the Year, wants to move forward, tell new stories, cultivate new communities, and, as he likes to say, “see you in the new world.” He’s just announced a progressive new partnership with Kering called Friends in New York, which is short on details but big on ideas. As he told Vogue, it’s not another incubator or charitable endeavor, but rather a platform and organization through which young designers, especially those in the BIPOC community, can “have a fair shake” at advancing in the fashion industry, one that is sustainable long-term.

New top story from Time: ‘She Asked Me Right From the Start to Do the White Shirt.’ Designer Misha Nonoo on Working with Meghan Markle for Her New Fashion Collection
On Thursday, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, unveiled a new capsule collection she helped put together as the patron of Smart Works, a U.K. charity that helps women prepare for employment opportunities with free clothes and job training. The collection is five pieces: a blazer, slacks, résumé-friendly tote bag, work dress and crisp white collared shirt, each designed with different brand partners and intended to help women create a fail-safe working wardrobe. The collection is available in inclusive sizing options, and for every item purchased, another is donated to Smart Works, giving someone access to new apparel for a fresh start.
That white shirt in particular — a fashion item frequently worn by Meghan Markle herself — happens to be made in partnership with Misha Nonoo, a fashion designer with a documented friendship with Markle. Nonoo, whose white shirts are a longtime staple of her brand and what she calls a wardrobe “lynchpin,” told TIME that the Duchess approached her early in the year after she was named patron of the charity in January. Markle has a special relationship with Nonoo’s popular “Husband” shirt: it was the top she wore on her first official, photographed outing with Prince Harry back in 2017.

“She asked me right from the start to do the white shirt, as that’s kind of our signature,” Nonoo explained, “and I said I’d be delighted to. She was incredible, the consummate professional in allowing me to really design the piece and giving me guidelines and guidance about the women, the clients and what the piece had to fulfill in terms of day-to-day life.”
Nonoo says she wanted to produce something that was “tailored, but modern,” without a traditional French dart or other details that would make it “a little too classic,” and would function for both work and weekend wear. A new challenge was developing a shirt that would fit well for the inclusive size range; it goes up to a size 22 U.S. (This is one more example of a contemporary push for more inclusive sizing options in fashion, an initiative that celebrities like Serena Williams, another friend of Markle’s, have also championed this week.) After getting to work, Nonoo’s finished product was a hit: “Luckily, she was very happy with it,” Nonoo says of Markle’s response.

For Markle, launching this capsule collection is the latest chapter in her charitable work with U.K. women’s organizations. Last fall, she released a community cookbook with the women of the Hubb Kitchen, who were impacted by the 2017 Grenfell fire. “Since moving to the U.K., it has been deeply important to me to meet with communities and organizations on the ground doing meaningful work and to try to do whatever I can to help them amplify their impact,” the Duchess shared in a statement. “In convening several companies rather than one, we’ve demonstrated how we can work collectively to empower each other — another layer to this communal success story, that I am so proud to be a part of.”
Nonoo agrees: “The more that people can use their businesses as platforms for change, the better,” she says. For her part, she’s happy to be involved. “It’s really extraordinary how the Duchess is using her platform to support causes like this,” she says. “I can honestly say, hand on heart, that I’m so honored to be a part of that and to see these women’s lives changed for the better as a result.”
For the launch event in London on Thursday, Markle’s first official engagement since giving birth to her first child with Prince Harry in May, Markle wore the new shirt from the collection, and Nonoo wore the husband shirt.
