Honest Opinion - Cepheus Albior

Albione. Just a translation. I don’t know why I keep telling you our names, are you even interested?

Overall score: 10/10

Normally i would not give such a high score to a character that appeared so briefly (see Aquarius Degel for example), but this time is different. Albior, despite his Cloth being worn by another character in the manga, is an anime-only character. As such, everything about him that exists it’s shown in the series. Mind you, about him, not Daidalos. I feel the need to point this out, since someone told me I keep getting manga stuff wrong in this honest opinion series.  Once again, it���s not about the manga, it’s about the anime. If, sometimes, the score it’s influenced by how little someone appears in the series compared with the manga, it’s because I might be disappointed about the short screentime. 

Not the case with Albior, though.  What we know about him is also what I love about him.  First thing first, he’s described as almost as strong as a Gold Saint, so much so that he was evenly matched against Milo. Hadn’t it been for Aphrodite weakening him with his roses, who knows how long the battle between them would last.  And I loved this, because it showed a man dedicated to his role, to the point of becoming amazingly powerful and skilled.

Do you even read this? Oh, well.  I’m conflicted about his voice. He has, once again, not one but two voice actors, both very very good, and surely fitting for a character like him. The thing is... the first is the same one who voices Shiryu, and I kind of dislike side characters with the same voice of a main one. 

The other issue is, he almost doesn’t talk. Thus, I don’t have video evidence of Albior speaking with these voices.  But don’t be afraid (I mean, I don’t know if you care about this, but at this point), because his two voice actors, Marco Balzarotti and Flavio Arras, will have videos as Shiryu (when I get around fixing his entry) and Megres (because yeah, Flavio voiced Megres and Aiolia, for one episode I think).

He’s also kind-hearted, not just a strict teacher, and he saw through his students right away. Albior knew who was going to win the Andromeda Cloth, and never doubted Shun when he underwent (is that even a word? I don’t know, I’m exhausted) the trial.  I liked how much of a parental figure he resembled, and the fact he wore the Cepheus Cloth only amused me more (myth fun fact: Cepheus was Adromeda’s father). 

What made me love him even more was how much he cares about his students. He fought with his all to protect them, and never once thought about betraying them.  Albior saw thought the Pope’s lies and actions, also showing us how smart and considerate he is, and refused to answer his call to pursue something better, something that wasn’t evil. 

A great character that I would have loved more of.  Even though the first comment me and my friend made was “holy shit, he looks like a middle-aged Hyoga”.  I’m still laughing about that.

About ten years ago, I wrote a story called Love You, Kill Me that focused on Shun’s training on Andromeda Island. Part of why I wrote it was because these two are my favorite non-Gold Saint characters. 

And while it is easy to find just about every other Master/Trainee pair, it’s really difficult(like I could count it on one hand) to find fan art that focused specifically on these two that isn’t just clip art. It’s sad, because while Ikki is important, we have to remember that Shun spent almost half of his life with his Master.

So I went out and commissioned the pair’s first meeting in the story. Shun is scared after being abused by the Kido Foundation. He sees this large armored man on a dead landscape in the middle of nowhere. He kneels down, takes off his gauntlet, and reveals a strong yet human hand and shakes it. 

I’m so happy with the work Vervain did on this. Her work is absolutely beautiful and I’ve made sure to link her twitter page. She’s a major FFIX fan so check out her stuff.

Now that i'm in albiore's country i can finally undestand why he loves "mate" so much. The Argentinian argentum saint deserves infinite love (and a Cerati soundtrack).

Below are the controversial changes in recent chapters, but the most problematic one is discussed at length in last place.

Camus is the one sent to assassinate Old Master.

The Cepheus Saint is Albiore rather than Daidalos, one of the uncommon occasions where I picked anime filler. Reda appears, but Spica doesn't exist. Reda gets the Cassiopeia Cloth, as I have plans for Piscis Austrinus. Cassiopeia is Bronze.

Deathmask is different. He has a name that isn't the “Mephisto” from the English dub (but is still called Deathmask), and has a master. There is no more confusion on whether he is evil or not — he is good, just Machiavellian and judgmental. This should make his clash with Shiryu's idealism more nuanced.

Milo is an amazon. I understand this will disappoint people, so I will go into my reasoning below.

People disliked Shun being turned into a girl in the Netflix show for obvious reasons. I have seen fans say they should've turned Aphrodite into a girl instead, but the fact is that, sure, we should have more female characters, but when it came to the main cast, we already had good candidates that went underused by Kurumada (Saori, Marin, Shaina). This was the major complaint people had with the writers calling the main cast a sausage party and turning Shun into a woman. I tried to rectify that by giving them the attention they deserve.

I also added a female main character from the get-go in the form of June, because she is the only canonical Bronze Saint. This was just to slight the Netflix writers by proving canon already had good material for female mains — I admit it was childish, but I love my June now.

I am also in the process of adding new female Bronze Saints by taking clues from noncanon (Delphinus/Dolphin Mii/Alicia), and by creating my own. Besides that, as some know, my Seika will be a very different character from the original too.

Clearly there is more than enough space for female characters, and we don't need to turn Aphrodite into a girl, let alone Shun. Then why do it to Milo?

Answer is simple: I want a female Gold Saint. Let's look at available solutions.

Solution 1 — Take a clue from Next Dimension and make an Ophiuchus Gold Saint. I can't do that because 1) I have set rules to how the world works that make this impossible. My Sanctuary's Ecliptic Houses are based on the Ancient Greek house system: the ecliptic is subdivided into spaces called “houses” that are immutable since the time of the Babylonians, i.e. even if Ophiuchus enters the ecliptic, it's never going to get a temple of its own, because although the houses refer to the constellations, they are not the constellations themselves. Think of how the Tropic of Cancer has little to do with Cancer nowadays, yet we still call it that; it's similar to what I'm doing. 2) Shaina. Enough said. This is a Seiya x Shaina fanfic too, and she is forever sacred.

Solution 2 — Make Aphrodite into a woman. I mean, he's called Aphrodite after all! My answer is obviously a no.

Solution 3 — Make a female Sagittarius join the roster later on. There will be changes in the Gold Saint roster over time, but no female Sagittarius (someone asked me if I was making Seika into the new Sagittarius, and although that sounds fascinating, it's not happening). My June is already peak fanfic, I have to balance things out somehow.

Solution 4 — Genderbend someone else and endure people exiling the fanfic. That was my choice because I'm a masochist.

Why Milo? There is precedence for Milo being a woman in the Toei 2014 film, and there is Scorpio Sonia; both are noncanon, but still highlight the possibility of a female Scorpio.

Other reason is that Milo is a distinctively masculine name, while Aphrodite is a distinctively feminine name. I enjoy that contrast, a femboy with a woman's name and a tomboy with a man's name.

All of the major scenes will still be there. The fight in Sanctuary will be even more intense, I'd say. The encounter with Kanon should be on par with the original in weight.

I hope this is at least tolerable to readers. Feel free to rip me apart in the comments anyway, I know Milo is in many people's ships.

Civil War

The civil war in Sanctuary was a series of conflicts that took place in the late 20th century, fought between elements of the army, amazons, and Saints. On one side were those loyal to the Pope, and on the other those who joined the rebellion, temporarily represented by a red banner.

The rebellion was first organized by Eagle Marin, a Silver Saint who served as Sanctuary's primary courier, after she gained great influence over much of the army. Beforehand, Eagle was already well-known among other amazons, her popularity only second to Scorpio Milo, a Gold Saint. Because the Gold Saints were instructed to stay behind and not get involved in the war as it evolved in the grounds, she easily enraptured much of Sanctuary's military ranks and led an envious campaign. This also came thanks to aid from agents in the Cult of Athena, who offered the rebels valuable intel.

Although most of the conflict occurred between soldiers, amazons, and Silver or Bronze Saints, a group of Saints eventually stormed the Ecliptic towards the Temple of Athena, leading to the deaths of Cancer Deathmask, Capricorn Shura, Aquarius Camus, and Gemini Saga — the latter was revealed to be the traitorous Pope himself. For a year it had been thought that Virgo Shaka was killed in battle too, but it was eventually revealed he somehow survived.

In particular, the death of the Cancer Saint caught the attention of the Judges in the Underworld, leading Minos to warn Persephone. A representative was sent to Heaven in order to communicate them of the strange happenings, and so the Angels Icarus and Atalanta were tasked with bringing news of Sanctuary.

As per Icarus' testimony, for a while it was believed in Heaven and the Underworld that Athena was killed in action during the war, which raised questions on whether Zeus would intervene. Nonetheless, later they confirmed she was alive, and the forces loyal to the traitorous Pope had been defeated.

Background

The civil war succeeded a slew of events that led to Eagle Marin's takeover of part of Sanctuary's army. First was the replacement of Aries Shion as Pope by Gemini Saga; it is unknown by what means this took place, though it is safe to assume Saga murdered an older, weakened Shion. Second was Saga's attempted assassination of Athena, which came eighteen years before the war broke out. Athena was barely saved by Sagittarius Aiolos, a young Gold Saint who was pinned as a traitor and fatally wounded by Capricorn Shura.

Before dying, Aiolos offered Athena and the Sagittarius Cloth to a tourist in the acropoli, where he had come out through in his escape. This man, Mitsumasa Kido, took Athena to Japan and raised her as Saori Kido. He had his biggest company, the Graad Foundation, take in a group of over one hundred orphans to be trained with the intent of acquiring Cloths.

This culminated in the Galaxian Wars, a tournament of Saints held by Saori Kido, which served as a bait for Sanctuary's forces. However, the attention of the Dark Saints was also caught, and Saori was yet unaware of her identity as Athena due to an oversight, so the involved Bronze Saints were busy with a red herring while Sanctuary watched from the shadows.

Gold Saints were called for duty in Sanctuary, though things inside continued as normal otherwise. In the meantime, a series of battles attempting to kill Saori Kido as a false Athena resulted in the death of many Silver Saints, that being until Athena was able to come in contact with Eagle Marin.

The Pope enacted a purge of Saints involved with those first protecting Saori Kido, that being Eagle Marin herself, Cepheus Albiore in Andromeda Island, Crane Haris in Paximadia, and Old Master in Rozan. Only two of them ended up being killed, but this urged Marin to organize the rebellion as quickly as possible.

Aftermath

It is shown the fighting caused a great deal of structural damage to the grounds of Sanctuary, but also to the Twelve Houses and even Athena's temple. The rooftop of the Temple of Leo had to be rebuilt, most of Athena's quarters were redone, the ceilings of multiple temples were fixed, and a makeshift bridge was fashioned due to a rift opened in Capricorn's courtyard.

Neither loyalists nor rebels targeted any civilians, yet it is implied some were killed in the fray, especially during the initial assaults. At least one example of a war crime took place during the war, led by rebels under Chameleon June and Lepus Ethel, but no punishment was ever handed out.

After learning of the Pope's treason and how far he went with his selfish plans, cynicism in Sanctuary grew. During the next war against Poseidon, troops left in Sanctuary evaluated the possibility of the Underworld or Heaven setting up for a surprise invasion. This was exacerbated by the fact that Dragon Shiryu, one of the Saints who stormed the Ecliptic, had long returned with word from Libra that they should prepare for Hades' release from his seal.

As a result, Saints with more extremist views on Sanctuary's and Athena's protection gained popularity among lower ranks. Leo Aiolia and Scorpio Milo, who would prefer Athena's well-being over that of Heaven, gained fervorous admiration. For her work in setting up the successful rebellion, Marin became even more popular than before. Others who led under Marin also gained favor, as was the case for Unicorn Jabu and Ophiuchus Shaina.

Due to Sanctuary's former intelligence leadership being wiped out before the war, Athena was forced to reform them. Similarly, after Cancer Deathmask's death, the High Priestess of the Cult of Athena took over Cancer's duties in the temple.
