🖤 𝘽 𝙤 𝙤 𝙠 𝙍 𝙚 𝙫 𝙞 𝙚 𝙬 : 🖤 Rooms of the Mind by @makenzie.campbell.poetry Rating: 4.5/5 stars Goodreads: 3.78 ⭐ Firstly, I'd like to thank @Netgalley and @centavepub for the eARC for an honest review of this poetry collection. I read Makenzie Campbell's other work, Nineteen, last year and can really see her development as a writer since then to now. This book explores loneliness, fear, heartbreak, nostalgia, love and hope (each having its own chapter) and as the reader I feel that I was able to watch as Campbell grew into someone that can see her worth. The book follows a growth that pours from the pages as you continue to the very end and I thought that was really beautiful. Even though I find Campbell's writings quite simple this is in no way a negative thing. The simple language meant that I could really get to the heart of what Campbell was saying with each piece which gave me more opportunity to relate to a lot of this collection. I really liked Venla Saarinen's art that was featured in each chapter of the book and again really complimented the poetry with the simple but elegant artwork. I think that being able to share our vulnerabilities and sometimes our weaknesses just shows how strong we really are. Campbell definitely does this with this collection. 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲: 𝟬𝟰 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮 This was my first time reading any poetry by Ari B. Cofer and I think she is a brilliant writer after reading this collection. There are definitely some trigger warnings that readers should look into before reading this. It does get very heavy throughout the collection. Cofer writes with raw emotion that really spoke to me. There is such an honesty and tenderness to the pieces in this collection. Cofer focuses on mental health and living a full life despite how crushing our mental health can be. There are a mixture of long form and short form pieces as well as everything in between. Cofer also added her own art to the collection and it really added to the meaning of the pieces it accompanied. I always love to see different talents combined. The writings in this collection can get really dark and Cofer digs deep into topics that a lot of people would willingly avoid. I really commend her for this collection. ✨ BOOK REVIEW: ✨ sometimes I fall asleep thinking about you by @catarinehancock Rating: 4.5/5 stars Goodreads: 4.16⭐ Firstly I'd like to thank NetGalley and Central Avenue Publishing for an eARC of this poetry collection for an honest review. (𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞: 𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏). Last year I read Shades of Lovers by Catarine Hancock and absolutely loved it. Seeing that Catarine had a new one coming out this year I was so excited to read it. This collection explores the journey of letting go of or recovering from a past relationship that doesn't seem to want to let go. It explores the feelings that come when you don't get closure and that lingering longing you can't quite understand. I love the way Catarine explores her feelings that are so relatable to so many people. While reading this collection I found myself thinking of people in my own life and I feel that this collection does help readers deal with their own recovery. There are a few trigger warnings at the beginning of the book, such as emotional/physical abuse which I always appreciate being forewarned about with poetry collections. The formatting is beautiful and I just can't truly express how much I love Catarine's writing style. I love her list poems, her prose poetry, the short and the very long pieces. I feel like she has a very unique style that I can't wait to keep reading as she writes more. I recommend this collection to those that like love/heartbreak poetry. I really tried to like this collection of poetry. It was formatted beautifully and having been through my own fair share of grief I thought that I would definitely be able to relate and get something from this collection. However, I felt that it was written in a way that I couldn't connect with. I feel like the author had a certain way he wanted his poetry to read but of course the readers don't know how that is which meant it didn't read very clearly for me. I completely appreciate a good metaphor when it comes to poetry but I felt like there were way too many in this collection that it made the real meaning behind the words disappear. The bits that filtered through were heart breaking and I really feel for the author. I think it's very brave of them to write such an emotional collection. I feel like grief is the hardest emotion to understand and to digest. To be able to write about the worst parts of our lives is very commendable. I have to shout out the artist of the cover and the interior artwork, Neyha Sofat, who you can find on instagram @neyhaartistry because her artwork in this collection is absolutely stunning! Based on a true story, Confessions of Her is the debut poetry novel by Cindy Cherie. It's a story of survival depicting how one young woman found love in herself, rather than searching for it in the arms of another. This collection of poetry takes the reader on a journey of love and loss, showing how she overcame heartbreak to ultimately, save herself. Each chapter in this collection was apart of the long painful process that is heartbreak. I felt I was with her with every step going through the pain of being too much for someone who wasn't enough and eventually realising that being who you truly are without editing yourself for others is what we owe ourselves. The right person will cherish everything about us. The emotional impact of this collection was phenomenal. It was written with such honesty and really captured that feeling perfectly. The title is so apt because it really is like a confessional of feelings. I recommend this poetry collection to readers that enjoy romance but also self love poetry. ❤ B O O K R E V I E W : ❤ Shades of Lovers by @catarinehancock Rating: 5/5 stars Goodreads: 4.12 ⭐ Firstly, I'd like to thank @netgalley and Central Avenue Publishing for the eARC for an honest review! Again, I was pleased to see the trigger warnings at the beginning of the books! This collection is separated into six chapters that each focuses on a different relationship and there are patterns throughout, such as the 'relationship status' and 'words of advice' poems but I really loved the last longer piece of each chapter that was written like a letter to each ex. The first chapter, Ruby Red, literally felt like it was written for me. Every detail was the same, even the age! I couldn't have related to anything more. I loved how the author validated every type of love at any age. There was so much reflection and honesty. A lot of poetry about love and heartbreak only focuses on the other persons wrongdoings but I loved how there was acknowledgment of her own flaws and mistakes. The amount of feelings that I felt while reading this book was unbelievable and I feel like I want to buy a physical copy just so I can go back a read it again and again! There are a mixture of short pieces and long pieces, mainly poetry but also some prose and they are all equally as good. I would recommend this poetry collection to those who enjoy poetry about love and also enjoy YA. I was inspired and heart broken throughout but could feel the strength from the author coming through in her writing. . 𝑼𝒏𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒄; 𝒊𝒕'𝒔 𝒅𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒔. 𝑳𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒂𝒍𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔. . I love reading poetry that really gets me thinking and this whole collection was like that for me. It made me question things that I hadn't really thought about before and I saw things in people close to me that written down like this really hit home. I want to thank Emily for laying all her emotions in a book like this because they do help others and they have an impact. . B O O K R E V I E W : [Dis]Connected Volume 1 by @centavepub . Rating: 3/5 stars. . The idea behind this book is one of connection for those who feel a disconnection. Poets from around the world come together and share their talents. They each gain inspiration from each other that form into short stories based on each others poetry. I thought this idea was genius and a brilliant way to combine poetry and prose writing together. . I did read volume 2 first which I enjoyed immensely. I expected the same from this book but only felt this for a few of the short stories. I'm not the biggest fan of high fantasy which a lot of the short stories were which instantly meant I would have to rate it lower. I felt that some of the writing needed work and maybe more information on how a short story should be written for the authors. . My favourite story was by Liam Ryan, titled, 'The Train' which was engaging and well written. If all the stories were to this standard it would have been a 5 star read. Other stories that I enjoyed were 'The Unholy Wild' by @tristamateer which had LGBT+ representation. Although it was fantasy it was well rooted in reality which I favour. Also, 'A Way To Leave' by @rhswaney which represented mental illness very well. The other story I enjoyed was 'Ultra' by @yenasharmapurmasir which was about a mother's superstitions that had influenced her daughters mind. . Overall, this book has a wide variety of topics and genres which as a whole I enjoyed.
