UF Preview
Deadass wrote 3000 words today and realized I didn't share any of it with ya'll. Tbh Gem Glow so far is kinda shaping up to be rather similar to the old UF version of it, but I think that's fine seeing as how that was a mostly original chapter in old UF anyway. Plus the prose is better now. So enjoy:
“S-sorry, Mr. Pines,” Steven frowned as he helped Connie stand. “I’m sure the Gems didn’t mean for this to happen outside of the Mystery Shack. And hey, at least they’re doing everything they can to stop it, right?”
Before Stan could answer, something suddenly flew straight through the window Stan was standing next to, shattering it on impact. It soon became clear that something was Amethyst as she fell onto the gift shop floor, whip still in hand and broken glass littering her hair. “Heh, whoops,” she smirked up at Stan, laughing again when she noticed the fury rising over his expression.
“Amethyst!” he growled hotly.
“Aw, what?” she picked herself up off the ground, shaking the glass out of her hair. The kids had to essentially hide behind a nearby shelf just to keep it from hitting them. “Don’t act like this is the first time I’ve busted one of your windows in. Though this was the first time it happened by accident… huh.”
With a carefree shrug, she hopped through the same hole in the window she’d created. Stan let out another aggravated groan as she left, pinching the bridge of his nose as he began making his way out of the gift shop. “Welp, I’ve officially had enough of this for one day. I’m heading to my office where I don’t have to deal with any more ‘magical’ mumbo-jumbo. Soos, Wendy, make sure none of those one-eyed freaks get in here or else I’m docking your pay.”
“On it, Mr. Pines!” Soos saluted dutifully.
“Yeah, whatever,” Wendy muttered, absently scrolling through her phone. “Not like you even pay us that much anyway.”
As soon as Stan was gone, all four of the kids quickly gathered around the broken window so they could watch the brawl outside. While their first impression of the Gems had already told Dipper and Mabel they were powerful, steadfast warriors, seeing them in action only proved that point further. They fought valiantly together, an even mix of Garnet’s strength, Pearl’s agility, and Amethyst’s speed coming together to take out most of the smaller centipeetles with ease. The only one of the creatures that seemed to give them any trouble was the one who had started all of this trouble, the large and fearsome centipeetle mother.
Steven frowned when he noticed his guardians once again struggling against the main monster. Despite their best efforts, none of their hits seemed to do much damage. If anything, they only served to infuriate the already feral creature even more as it continued spitting acid in almost every direction. The vicious liquid burnt through trees, shrubs, and even some of the decorative totem poles surrounding the shack. The kids took notice of the rapidly rising damage, as did Soos and Wendy as they joined them to watch by the window.
“Yeesh,” Wendy winced. “That thing isn’t messing around, is it?”
“Yeah,” Soos nodded. “It’s a good thing we’re safe and sound here inside the shack where it can’t possibly get to us!” Almost as soon as he said this, some of the centipeedle’s acid happened to spray in their direction. They all quickly ducked out of the way as the green liquid slipped in through the broken window, burning a sizable hole into the gift shop’s floor.
“...You were saying?” Wendy asked, raising an eyebrow at her coworker.
“Aw, man…” Steven sighed as he carefully peered out the window once more. “The Gems could really use some help out there! If only I could get my shield to work…” He lifted his shirt, tapping the area around his gemstone in the hopes that it would conjure something, anything that could help the Gems. “That’d be more than enough to save the day, I just know it!”
“Well, even without your shield, there has to be something we can do…” Connie said, perching a hand against her chin. “Maybe that monster has some kind of weakness the Gems just don’t know about.”
“A weakness, huh…?” Dipper muttered to himself as he patted the pocket of his vest where the journal was stored. He hesitated for a moment, looking between his sister and their new friends as a wave of doubt passed over him. It quickly vanished, however, when he remembered just how invaluable they all had been in their escape from the gnomes. If he could trust them then, certainly he could trust them now, right? “...Can you guys keep a secret?” he dropped his voice down to a whisper. Mabel, Connie, and Steven all eagerly nodded, following after him as he slipped into the shack’s den without Soos or Wendy noticing.

SU Rewatch: Gem Glow
Obligatory “Cookie Cat is foreshadowing for Rose/Pink”.
Steven was so much happier and childlike omg.
Centipeedle (Nephrite) being called a “mother” is interesting when gems can’t reproduce like humans. Not sure where it fits in the plot and I know it’s the first episode but it seems odd after having seen the whole show.
Again, I know it’s the first episode, but it’s nice that Amethyst wants Steven’s shield and not Rose’s.
First episode art has its charm, but Pearl kneeling at the end looks extra weird after watching the art evolve over time.

Gem Glow: Part 1
Welcome! Well, this isn’t really made to entertain. I’m just doing this to recover from trauma and get a good grasp of the show’s lore while having my girls react with me. Feel free to tag along.
We’ll be watching four episodes a day and react only to the major events as tackling all of them is a toughie.
Sharpie: “I want to see real tears, Wilt.”
Wilt: “Tears? At the very first episode?”
Sharpie: “Yes. Otherwise I’ll make you cry by some other means.”
Wilt: “I have these tear marks. Those count, yes?”
Sharpie: “Real tears, I said.”
Tumblr media
Wilt: “Ahh, how iconic.”
Spinel: “The area around the lighthouse is lacking a lot of flowers. That’ll change someday!”
Sharpie: “Yes, after a lot of blood, ink and tears had been shed first.”
Tumblr media
Spinel: “Here we have a shot of the show’s hero, lamenting the discontinuation of a certain ice cream snack brand.”
Sharpie: “Is this triggering your PTSD yet?”
Wilt: “Not really. I thought it would but surprisingly I’m still okay.”
Tumblr media
Lars: “Well, if you miss your wimpy ice cream so much, why don’t you make some with your MAGIC BELLY BUTTON?”
Spinel: “Hey Sharpie, let’s make foodstuff with just the energy in our gem.”
Sharpie: “And you still owe me 86 years’ worth of happiness.”
Wilt: “What is this civil conversation you’re having? That’s not how I wrote you two.”
Tumblr media
Sadie: “Uhh Steven? Do you want to take the freezer with you?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spinel: “Think what would’ve happened if Sadie didn’t let him take that freezer home.”
Sharpie: “Does… does the cat’s face looked different to you?”
Tumblr media
Spinel: “I love the lighthouse. The view up the top is always so breathtaking.”
Sharpie: “I’m not so happy with our roommate though.”
Wilt: “…I might have to draw this someday.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spinel: “Don’t you just love it when your pets greet you as you enter your house? I wish you would greet me whenever I fall asleep.”
Sharpie: “You’re just my nightmare.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amethyst: “’Sup, Steven.”
Spinel: “AME!!!!”
Tumblr media
Spinel: “I AM IN LOVE.”
Sharpie: “You can stop replaying this 5 seconds worth of Pearl now.”
Spinel: “It’s 4 seconds worth of Pearl, you heathen.”
Tumblr media
Spinel: “HOOO MAMA. Remember when Garnet kicked our ass?”
Sharpie: “She kicked your ass. She kicked your ass so much I had to start a switch to intervene. Now that I think of it, I shouldn’t have done that.”
Tumblr media
Sharpie: “Being sliced open is one thing. Being pulled apart is another.”
Spinel: “It’s good that we’re stretchy.”
Sharpie: “I can disable that function and tear you apart like that, actually. Ever wondered why it doesn’t hurt when others pull at you like taffy but I can?”
Spinel: “I can do the same and prevent you from escaping my hugs.”
Sharpie: “*sigh*… I hate you.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spinel: “Ahaha! Pearl is so cute!”
Sharpie: “Ahaha! I love this technique.”
Wilt: “It’s good for breaking a hole through walls in maximum security prisons, yeah.”
Tumblr media
Amethyst: “Uhh you guys, these things don’t have gems.”
Tumblr media
Garnet: “That means there must be a mother somewhere nearby.”
Sharpie: “That’s a fascinating thought.”
Wilt: “It’s similar to how Pearl can project figures that can maintain itself while independent of the source. In this case, the main centipeedle can project independent but smaller versions of itself.”
Sharpie: “How come 2nd Projections aren’t like that, I wonder. Like we can’t have separate bodies or anything…”
Wilt: “Probably because the 2nd Projection has a personality of its own and it stems from the original gem, while Pearl Projections and mini-centipeedles are pre-programmed projections that would act accordingly to the original’s commands. Like, if Spinel makes a projection separate from her, it wouldn’t be you.”
Sharpie: “Fair enough.”
Spinel: “Speaking of Pearl Projections…”
Sharpie: “No.”
Tumblr media
Pearl: “Steven, until you learned to control the powers in your gem, we’ll take care of protecting humanity. Okay?”
Spinel: “I want Pearl to snap my neck like that.”
Sharpie: “As if impaling you wasn’t enough.”
Spinel: “PFFFTT-“
Tumblr media
Amethyst: “We went out and stole a bunch!”
Spinel: “That’s my Ame.”
Pearl: “I went back and paid for that.”
Sharpie: “That’s…. that’s very Pearl of her.”
Tumblr media
Steven: “He left his family behind!”
Spinel: “AHAHAHAHAHA”
Sharpie: “What’s so funny about that?”
Tumblr media
Sharpie: “Oh my stars. I hope we don’t have to bear another one of those.”
Wilt: “It’s catchy. I like it.”
Tumblr media
Sharpie: “What a happy little family. It’s a shame that they’re doomed to a life of madness onwards.”
Tumblr media
Amethyst: “Quick! Try and summon your weapon!”
Tumblr media
“Awww, no weapon.”
Wilt: “He’s struggling. A sign of a well-rounded character. The progress is dramatic if we compare this episode to the last ones. And it only took him a few Earth years.”
Sharpie: “And it took us like what, 86 years to get this far and we’re still inferior to most we meet in our travels.”
Spinel: “God I love Pearl.”
Sharpie: “Can you even pay attention to anything that isn’t Pearl?”
Spinel: “I’m capable of paying attention to a lot of things and to nothing at the same time, Sharpie. Be amazed.”
Tumblr media
Steven: “Can one of you just explain how to summon a weapon?”
Pearl: “Oh! I’ll go first.”
Wilt: “I love Pearl.”
Spinel: “I love Pearl.”
Sharpie: “…”
Tumblr media
Spinel: “AUUGH! Pearl is so beautiful.”
Wilt: “This is so anime.”
Spinel: “This scene makes me wanna stand underneath a cherry blossom tree with her in a Friday afternoon and confess my love.”
Sharpie: “God both of you disgust me.”
Tumblr media
Pearl: “Pay attention to these petals, Steven.”
Tumblr media
Pearl: “The petal’s dance seems improvised, but it is being calculated in real-time based on the physical properties of this planet.”
Wilt: “HELL YEAH, I LOVE PEARL.”
Tumblr media
Pearl: “With hard work and dedication, you can master the magical properties of your gem, and perform your own dance.”
Tumblr media
Pearl: “Like so.”
Spinel: “HELL YEAH, I LOVE PEARL”
Sharpie: “So… Pearl’s approach is tuning into the technical reality of the universe to tap into her gem’s energy,”
Tumblr media
Amethyst: “Listen Steven. All that practice stuff is no fun. Whenever I need to summon my weapon, it just happens.”
Sharpie: “And Amethyst’s approach is just winging it. Considering Ame is a gem made for war, of course summoning a weapon is natural instinct. Pearl however… She had to learn serious fighting, something most Pearls aren’t made for.”
Spinel: “We’re the same, ain’t we? Spinels ain’t made for violence but we can whoop butt just fine.”
Sharpie: “We just got lucky… and incredibly unfortunate at the same time.”
Tumblr media
Sharpie: “Gems are such nuisances. So much that in other places of the world, a group of humans actually built little Distortion Bombs capable of disorienting corrupted gems to a point of repelling them away. Unfortunately those things are powered by tiny bits of gem shards, which is obviously not an easily obtainable source of power. The project was discontinued.”
Spinel: “The invention worked on us, too, which is kind of impressive!”
Sharpie: “The best those little bombs done to us were to irritate us, or temporarily disable our senses. Corrupted gems have warped sentience I think, so they would rely more on instincts and run away from the source of irritation as much as possible.”
Sharpie: “They say if enough energy is given into the device, it’ll have high enough amplitude to potentially dissipate a gem’s physical form. But this is just a fever dream. There’s no way they have access to that amount of energy without slaughtering a Diamond first. Still, props to the engineer who thought that was a good idea.”
Spinel: “So instead of using gem shards, he decided to use us by writing the function into Springy. If we poof, we can give bad gems nearby a head ache and make them go away. We can protect people even if we die in battle! He basically turned us into heroic suicide bombers against corrupted gems.”
Sharpie: “Necessary, considering every time we poof we somehow cause part of a building to catch on fire, killing the people we’re supposed to protect in the process.”
Spinel: “Uh huh… yeaaahh….. I mean, where else is the excess energy supposed to go?”
Sharpie: “I dunno. Some other harmless form of energy apart from heat? The sparkly dust clouds were already perfect and you just had to change it into something deadlier. Thanks to you, seven people that stood close to us turned into soup.”
Spinel: “Well, there was that one time where the fire storm actually saved us from a meanie who wanted to crush us. We can’t just ignore that.”
Sharpie: “Seven people died, Spinel. Seven people that happened to be our allies.”
Wilt: “Please stop. We have to finish this episode.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Steven: “So I’m supposed to work really hard and not try at all at the same time?”
Tumblr media
Garnet: “Yes.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Garnet: “Or…”
Tumblr media
Garnet: “You can link your mind with the energy of all existing matter, channeling the collective power of the universe through your gem.”
Tumblr media
Garnet: “At least that’s my way of doing it.
Tumblr media
Spinel: “C’mon, kiddo. It’s not that hard to understand. It’s how Springy lived for the past 40 years. If she can do it, so can you.”
Sharpie: “I bet this makes the most sense to you, huh Wilt?”
Wilt: “It does. Considering we are all just ripples of energy on the surface of the large lasagna we call the observable universe.”
Sharpie: “What a nerd. Also we’re half-way through the episode. You better cry, Wilt.”
Tumblr media
Wilt: “I’m saving this shot for reference.”

Steven Universe Alternate Future chapter 12: Eye in the Sky (originally published April 5, 2021)
AN: Now here's a chapter I'm sure you all will find interesting. Out of everything I've heard people declare to be super underutilized in Steven Universe Future, a lot of them say Nephrite shouldn't have been borderline erased from existence. Okay, I'm being a little dramatic there, but you get my point. In fact, none of the other corrupted Gems get anything important to do after Guidance. Well, I plan on changing that right now!
Synopsis: Nephrite needs help coping with corruption trauma, so Steven sets up a therapy group for formerly corrupted Gems.
Cast:
Zach Callison as Steven
Aparna Nancherla as Nephrite, Nephrite's crew
Shelby Rabara as Peridot
Amy Sedaris as Teal Zircon
Kimberly Brooks as Cherry Quartz
Jennifer Paz as Lapis Lazuli, Zuli
Featuring Auli'I Cravalho as Orange Spodumene
Kimiko Glenn as Blue Chalcedony
Tara Platt as Heaven and Earth Beetles
Tara Strong as Grossular Diopside
Phillipa Soo as Chrysocolla
Anika Noni Rose as Watermelon Tourmaline
And Aimee Carrero as Moonstone
--
Steven took a deep breath in as his Dondai Supremo wheeled into Little Homeworld while "I'm Looking Forward" played on his radio. "It's just a quick visit, Steven." He muttered to himself. "No need to get so uncomfortable, everyone is just fine."
As Steven stepped out of his car and looked around the Gem village, he found many of its residents minding their business. In particular, he found Cherry Quartz at Lapis's sculpturing class, partnered up with Zuli for an assignment.
"Oh, hey Steven." Cherry greeted Steven and motioned him over to check out the clay pumpkin she and Zuli were working on. "Lapis gave us an assignment to mold a vegetable out of clay, so Zuli and I chose a pumpkin. You like what we got so far?"
"Actually, I think pumpkins are fruits." Steven stated while observing the in-progress gourd model.
"Are you sure?" Zuli wondered, picking up the sculpture she and the Quartz were making. "Then why are they put next to carrots, tomatoes, lettuce, and other foods?"
"That's a pretty loaded question," Lapis said as she turned to the quizzical trio. "Pumpkins do have seeds inside of them like a fruit, but the nutrition is when they're most like-"
"Hi, Steven!" Nephrite interrupted Lapis to greet Steven.
"Hi there Nephrite, been a while since we talked." Steven said to Nephrite. "How are things with you and your crew?"
"Everything's been going good." Nephrite answered while stretching her arms. "Hey, sorry to interrupt you guys, but I came here because I got a little problem in Peridot's class."
"Oh, anything to help you guys." Steven stated, and then he turned to Lapis's students. "Sorry to leave so soon, but I got other things to do."
"It's alright Steven, I think we can manage." Cherry Quartz said before getting back to the pumpkin.
"Alright Nephrite, what are we dealing with?" Steven asked the former Centipeedle mother as they walked over to the greenhouse.
--
Inside the greenhouse, a small group of Gems was huddled around Peridot as she info-dumped about azaleas.
"Although the azalea is very beautiful, it can be very dangerous to humans as well." Peridot explained to her pupils. "The leaves and nectar contain grayanotoxins that can mix with honey to create mad honey, hello Steven, and can cause many symptoms, particularly those related to the heart."
As Peridot continued rambling, Nephrite brought Steven over to a sunflower in a pot that had a little bug-like creature skittering around the soil and stem. "See, that's what I'm talking about." Nephrite said. "Is this little bug bad for my sunflower in any way?"
Steven examined the critter as Nephrite held the pot to his face, allowing him a better look at it. "No, it's nothing to be scared of." He assured Nephrite. "And that's not a bug, it's an anthropod. A centipede to be exact."
Although Steven meant well, the reveal of the creature's name brought chills down Nephrite's spine. She began breathing rapidly, trembling uncontrollably as she dropped the flowerpot in fright and finally, letting out a loud shriek as she dropped to her knees, catching the attention of the rest of the class.
"Is something the matter?" Peridot asked gently while trying to console the formerly corrupted Gem.
"I was just telling her about the little guy that crawled into his sunflower, and then she started having a panic attack!" Steven exclaimed, almost just as lost as everyone else is.
"Maybe she doesn't like that thing." Teal Zircon guessed when she spotted the offending centipede and let it crawl onto her hand. "Aw, look at the little guy. Hey, Steven, you said it was a centipede, ri-"
"DON'T!" Nephrite yelled at TZ. "Don't ever say that word again!"
"Teal, can you stop being so insensitive towards others?" Steven scolded the Zircon.
"Sorry Steven, this was kinda my fault." Teal said remorsefully. "Hey, no hard feelings Nephrite?"
However, Nephrite was still too panicked to respond. She had gone from screaming like crazy to cradling her legs to her chest in front of the other Gems though, but Steven still felt worried for the one-eyed green Gem.
"You are aware that she was a corrupted Gem much like all of you, correct?" Steven said to the other Gems in the class, and they silently nodded before Steven turned to TZ.
"Nephrite, in particular, felt really lost when the Diamonds corrupted most of the Gems unlucky enough to remain on Earth, since she was separated from her crew." He explained. "Thankfully, I was able to reunite them all, but was unable to heal them until I got help from the Diamonds." That was when he got an idea. "That's it!"
--
"Thank you all for coming!" Steven announced to a group of formerly corrupted Gems sitting in a circle of folding chairs. "Now, it's come to my attention that at least one of you is still reeling from having been corrupted for thousands of years. This is a term I call PCSD, or post-corruption stress disorder." He began explaining. "It's kinda like PTSD, but I'm sure you get why it's so different."
Teal Zircon raised her hand, wanting to ask a question.
"Yes TZ?" Steven asked.
"So, where did you get the idea from exactly?" TZ asked Steven. "I mean, you could've just had a one-to-one sesh with Nephrite and you'd kinda get the same effect."
"Well, there are groups like this on TV shows I've heard of." Steven answered. "One guy would sit down with other people suffering the same problem as him, and they'd all take turns telling their stories in the hopes that they would get help. Now, anyone want to go first?"
"Us, us!" the Heaven Beetle exclaimed. "Hello, we're the Heaven and Earth Beetles."
"And we were corrupted." The Earth Beetle added.
"Hi, Heaven and Earth Beetles." The other ex-monsters greeted monotonously.
"See, you're already getting the hang of it!" Steven exclaimed happily. "Now, tell us your story you two."
"Unlike all of you guys, I think our corruption ran the deepest." The Heaven Beetle declared sadly.
"I'm pretty sure we even forgot what kinds of Gems we were." The Earth Beetle added before she took a look at her gem. "I mean, we certainly aren't Diamonds, but what could we be?"
"I think I may have a decent idea of what you could be." Teal Zircon answered before she used her monocle to project a holographic image of Gems that looked similar to the Beetles. "I think you might be Cubic Zirconias. You may be little, but you got a big influence over Homeworld."
"Though I'm curious," Steven responded. "why exactly did you ditch those guys for us when you live such a charmed life?"
"Well, those charmed lives were so drab." The Earth Beetle said. "Would it be oh so wrong to have a little excitement in your lives?"
"That is a good point." TZ muttered, prompting the other Gems seated to applaud the pair of Cubic Zirconias for opening up.
"Thanks you two for coming clean." Steven thanked the tiny twosome. "Now, who wants to go next?"
"I'll go." Orange Spodumene replied as she stood up. "Hello everyone, I'm Orange Spodumene and I was corrupted."
"Hi Orange Spodumene." The Gems greeted Orange Spodumene.
"Back in the old days, I went on many deep-sea adventures to collect life forms in places that no other Gem would dare to go!" Orange Spodumene began telling her story. "You all should've been there, the ocean life was beautiful. One of my favorite adventures was when I collected coral so that there'd be room for this Sea Shrine where tons of time things are stored. I'd be so happy to show you all my collection someday!"
"I never knew you were so into coral." Steven said to the deep sea Gem.
"I don't think you ever asked." Orange Spodumene replied before she continued. "Anyways, I didn't get the message to flee back to Homeworld and hid in the ocean when they pointed right at Earth. I thought that I would be safe from the Diamonds since the ocean is so dark and they couldn't see me, but I thought wrong. For the next couple thousand years, I just kept roaming around the ocean floor until I found Steven and then got bubbled."
"I'll go now." Watermelon Tourmaline said as she got up from her seat. "Hey, I'm Watermelon Tourmaline, and I was corrupted."
"Hi Watermelon Tourmaline." The other Gems said just as monotonously as before.
"Now, you may be wondering, weren't you a single Gem once upon a time? Why are you a fusion all of the sudden?" Watermelon Tourmaline asked rhetorically. "Well, I'm a different Watermelon Tourmaline than the one the Crystal Gems beat. I still find it super weird that there's two of me, but we learned to get along and even smash watermelons from time to time."
"Hey." The other Watermelon Tourmaline waved from her chair.
"Anyways, my components were brought together because Homeworld believed that fusing two Gems of the same type would give them an edge on the battlefield." The primary Watermelon Tourmaline continued speaking. "However, all they got was a big bouncy ball, so they just tossed me out. Didn't stop me from "bouncing back" though!"
The Gems began laughing at the Tourmaline's pun before Chrysocolla stood up. But even among the chucking, Nephrite refused to speak up.
"Hello, I am Chrysocolla." Chrysocolla introduced herself. "And I was corrupted."
"Hi, Chrysocolla."
"I once used my whips to uproot trees, but when I was that silly Slinker, I used them to be a real pain in the neck for the Crystal Gems." Chrysocolla explained. "But now, I can use my powers to not annoy others, but instead just have fun with them."
"Anything else you'd like to share with the group?" Steven asked Chrysocolla.
"I also have a bit of a fondness for history too." The former Slinker answered. "Particularly that one guy. What was his name again, Anderson Harold? Alexei Hammer?"
"You're probably thinking of Alexander Hamilton." Steven chuckled. "Hey Nephrite, you want to go next?" Nephrite just curled up on her chair and shook her head, much to Steven's disappointment. "Never mind." He muttered. "Uh, Grossular Diopside, how about you?"
"Gladly!" the little Gem exclaimed and stood up on her chair. "Hi, I'm Grossular Diopside, and I was corrupted!"
"Hi, Grossular Diopside."
"I had just emerged in the Alpha Kindergarten when the corrupting light hit, and I just wandered around with no idea what to do." Grossular explained. "But now that I'm here, I don't care what I was originally made for! All I want to do now is just enjoy life here on Earth."
"Hello, I am Blue Chalcedony." Blue Chalcedony said robotically. "And I was corrupted."
"Hi, Blue Chalcedony."
"I was heavily involved with helping to create new Kindergartens with my drills." Blue Chalcedony said, turning her hand into a drill as an example. "My drills were top of the line, so much that they impossibly kick reason to the curb, which was why Rose recruited me into the Crystal Gems."
"Howdy, I'm Moonstone." Moonstone said last. "And I was corrupted."
"Hi, Moonstone."
"My type of Gem was specifically made for stealth operations." Moonstone revealed. "Heck, we even got more than one weapon for the jobs we got!" As a demonstration, Moonstone began altering various parts of her body into various tools she would've used for her infiltration missions, to everyone's amazement. All except one.
"Hey, I don't think Nephrite over there has said anything yet." Moonstone realized as she gazed at the one-eyed Gem, who shifted uncomfortably in her seat before sadly getting up.
"I'm sorry." Nephrite apologized and began to leave. "I can see you all moved on, but I just can't."
"Nephrite, wait!" Steven cried as she ran after her before turning back to the group. "Uh, you guys go on without us!"
As Steven left, Snowflake Obsidian and Larimar turned to Teal Zircon, who was all too eager to tell her story. "Howdy, I'm Teal Zircon, and I was corrupted!"
"Hi, Teal Zircon."
--
Nephrite strolled sadly back to where it all began at Peridot's greenhouse and gazed down at the flowerpot she had dropped to the ground earlier that day. As it turned out, the centipede that started this whole mess was still there, and she wasn't happy to see it. "This is all your fault." She said angrily to the anthropod and raised a foot, ready to squish it, when someone stopped her in her tracks.
"Nephy!" Steven exclaimed, racing up to Nephrite and hugging her while shooing the centipede away. "I only wanted to help you! But why did you just run away like that?"
"Steven, I'm thankful for the kindness," Nephrite replied. "but sometimes, there are things you can never recover from in seconds flat. You know that, right?"
"Yeah, kinda." Steven admitted. "If it makes you feel any better, I brought along some friends who could help you."
"Captain?" another Nephrite asked for her leader as she and six other Nephrites entered the greenhouse with concern.
"We heard what happened from Steven." Another one of the Nephrites revealed. "How come you never told us about this PC-whatever you were suffering from?"
"Well for one, Steven just made that term up." Nephrite answered. "And second of all, he set up this support group for other corrupted Gems, but I just couldn't bring myself to talk about my experiences no matter how much the other members of the group wanted me to."
"Well don't worry cap, we were here for you back in the Rebellion and we'll be sticking by you now!" a third Nephrite cheered, bringing a smile to their leader's face as she shed a few tears of joy.
"Thanks you guys." Nephrite said as she joined her teammates in a big group hug. "I think I'm ready now."
"That's the spirit." Steven declared and he took Nephrite's hand and led her out of the greenhouse. "Come on, let's get going. I don't know how long TZ can keep talking."
--
"And that was the story of how I realized Jasper would soon become my best friend!" Teal Zircon finished a story for her fellow Gems, and there was much clapping as Steven returned with the Nephrites alongside him. "Oh hey Steven, hey Nephrite! You guys should've seen it, I was telling them all about that fight with Jasper and-"
"I think that's enough TZ." Steven chuckled. "After all, Nephrite's finally ready to talk."
"Oh yeah, I'd love to hear your story." Teal said happily. "No hard feelings about that centipede Nephy?"
"Water under the bridge." Nephrite sighed wistfully. "But still, it pays to be a bit more sensitive of others." With that, she took her seat again and finally began to speak for the other formerly corrupted Gems. "Hello, my name's Nephrite, and I was corrupted."
"Hi, Nephrite."
Nephrite turned to Steven and her fellow Nephrites, who watched on happily. "My crew and I were sent down to Earth to fight for Homeworld in the Gem War. We fought with all our might, but when we were called back home because the Diamonds were about to launch their final attack, our team got separated. I was so scared about what was going on, but then we all got turned into monsters."
The other Gems gasped as Nephrite continued. "When I first met Steven, it wasn't on the best of terms. I think he threw some kind of container at me to poof me."
"That's true." Steven revealed jokingly.
"Anyways, the next times we met were a lot friendlier." Nephrite's story became on its way to a happy ending. "The third time around, he even almost healed me! But it didn't last long, though because of that, I was able to reunite with my crew. They were waiting for me in our old ship this whole time, and I'm pretty sure you know the rest."
The rest of the group aww'd while Nephrite sat down, and she gave her thanks to Steven with an earnest smile. Steven returned it in kind.
--
Sorry this chapter was a bit short compared to the rest, but I feel I did what I wanted to do. And speaking of which, next chapter we move onto Bismuth Casual, which will feature the grand return of a certain "mystery girl" that fans have been begging to see again.

Fragments
Everything below is just my opinion; I am in no way trying to say that how I feel about this is the one correct take or whatever.
I know a lot of people like this episode and what happens in it, but I don’t.  I totally understand that some people just don’t want to see any negativity, period, but negativity is not inherently bad or wrong.
Negative opinions, even about something you enjoy, can be valid too - regardless of whether you happen to agree with them or not.
Also I get very salty near the end of this, and that might be entertaining to people who stan this episode?
I am aware that a lot of people – the majority, I’m pretty sure – think that the episode is a masterpiece. And on some level, I see where they’re coming from with that assessment.
The episode is boarded beautifully, the backgrounds – especially during the training montage – are stunning as always.  The music is fantastic, and the performances are great too.  In these respects, Fragments is a stand-out episode; I agree.
Tumblr media
(Like look at this.  Gorgeous.)
However, something that’s bothered me since I saw the episode is the writers’ decision to write it into the story that Steven shatters Jasper.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: I just don’t get it.  I’m purposefully misinterpreting the story to say it’s bad.  Steven brings her back to life; and it’s not like he meant to do it in the first place.  I just don’t have the capacity to understand the sublime nature of the show’s storytelling.  I’m an SU crit and all I want to do is make the real fans feel about themselves for liking it.
Uhhhh... no.  Nah.  That ain’t it chief.
It’s true; I am not a writer.  I’m just a passive consumer of media.  However, I do not agree with the viewpoint that in order to properly understand or critique a thing you need to have the expertise and/or experience in order to make something similar.
For example, if I were to put something I drew when I was 10 years old next to something I drew yesterday, it shouldn’t take a person who has had an education in fine art to tell you that the latter drawing is better-looking than the former.
That’s how I approach media consumption and criticism; when I criticise a writing decision, I am doing so as a consumer.  I’m not saying I could write it better, or even that my opinion is objectively correct and the writer is wrong or bad.  I’m just saying that I didn’t like a thing.  Which, I would hope, is allowed?
Okay, defensive hedging over, back to the point; I don’t like that they had Steven shatter Jasper.
[I get markedly saltier from this point on, fyi]
Tumblr media
Full admission of bias here: one of the things I really cherish about the original show is how they wrote Steven’s character; he’s a boy with interests that don’t rigidly conform to gender stereotypes.  He likes ‘boyish’ things and ‘girly’ things, and that’s okay; thats just him.  In cartoons when I was growing up, characters like Steven would be the butt of jokes about being ‘girly’ or thinly-veiled homophobia.  I find him very relatable, and I want to acknowledge that yes, that is probably a significant part of why I have such an issue with this episode’s twist.
I am not trying to say that he’s a perfect baby angel or whatever; Steven regularly gets frustrated and angry. He does some pretty manipulative and dickish things to people around him (stop trying to make Larsadie happen, Steven. It’s not going to happen).  He is a flawed character who fucks up sometimes. And he’s not 100% peaceful either; he acts violently when he defends himself against corrupted Gems and Homeworld Gems (and Crystal Gems on occasion *cough*Bismuth*cough*).
However, he has a pacifistic temperament; whenever it’s possible, he prefers that problems be solved without needless violence or hurt.  And I like that; in most media, it’s rare to have a male protagonist who wants to solve their problems without jumping straight to punching things.
When he accidentally frees Centipeedle, he convinces the Gems to step off and allow him to try and rehabilitate her peacefully; he even notices that the Gems’ weapons are a trigger for her, and make them put them away.  He frees Lapis against the Gems’ wishes because he recognizes that keeping her prisoner is wrong, and when she steals the ocean, he talks it out and heals her so she can leave Earth peacefully.
He tries to aid Jasper when she starts corrupting, fixes Eyeball’s gemstone when she’s cracked and tries talking Bismuth down when she attacks him with the breaking point.  In all of these situations, his words and help are ignored or rejected; he’s forced to resort to violence.  And it traumatises him.
We get an entire episode dedicated to the fact that he’s been struggling with processing these awful things that happened.
Tumblr media
Even in Future, Steven shows hesitation about engaging in unncecessary violence; he gives into Jasper’s goading for a fight after what’s implied to be dozens of failed tries at making her come to Little Homeschool, and he spends an entire episode trying to keep Lapis from squashing the two rogue Lapis Lazulis.
The only time he hops into a fight willingly is after Eyeball and Aquamarine hold Greg hostage, and even then they pose a clear threat to his and Greg’s safety and have made it clear that they want to hurt him emotionally and physically.  Even at that, he stops and switches tactics to talking them down as soon as they lose their focus and start bickering with each other.
Tumblr media
(I mean, he fails.  But it’s the thought that counts.)
I personally find it really jarring that the writers found it appropriate to write it into the series that this same character – over the course of three (3) days – goes from disliking mindless violence for mindless violence’s sake to happily engaging in the destruction of plants and animals* and has done a total 180 on his willingness to spar with Jasper, to the point that he instigates their rematch.
*(You best believe plenty of small mammals and birds – y’know, like the nest Steven saved in the first episode – died as he and Jasper felled tree after tree, not to mention all of those displaced by the destruction of their habitats, and the potential loss of food sources from some of those trees.)
You’re telling me that it’s a reasonable character beat for this boy to gleefully laugh like an anime supervillain at his sudden new-found joy in fighting, then pin Jasper in place, taunt her for helping him get so strong, and hit her so hard that she breaks into pieces and dies?
Tumblr media
You’re telling me that that’s an in-character thing for Steven Quartz Diamond Cutie-Pie DeMayo Universe do to another character?
(And yes I am purposefully dancing around talking about the mental health stuff because if I did that I’d have to go on a whole other tangent about Growing Pains and fuck I just don’t feel like it right now lmao)
Going back to Mindful Education, another big thing we see Steven struggle with is the idea that his mother shattered Pink Diamond.  This knowledge sits heavily with him; it makes him sympathetic to the Diamonds, even under the circumstances in which he sees them (escaping from the Human Zoo, and being on trial for said murder).
Tumblr media
He sees their grief, and he feels awful.  He questions who Rose Quartz even was.  He knows, based on what Garnet said, that Rose had to do it; there was no other way to free Earth.  But he still feels awful seeing the pain that Pink’s loss has caused Blue and Yellow Diamond.
In Steven Universe, shattering is clearly equated with execution/death multiple times.  When Pearl and Garnet fret over the crack in Amethyst’s gemstone worsening.  When Blue Diamond threatens to break Ruby.  When Bismuth introduces the breaking point, and Steven recoils at the sight of what it does.  If you want to take the fact that Gem shards are sentient and desperate to become whole again into account, you could even argue that it’s a fate worse than death. This particular act of violence is treated very, very seriously.
When we find out that Rose shattered Pink Diamond, there is a season and a half long arc unpacking the implications and consequences of this one action, and how this knowledge forever alters Steven’s mental image of his mother.  And she didn’t even kill anyone.  It was a lie!
Tumblr media
In Steven Universe Future, Steven shatters Jasper 4 episodes before the end of the series.  And it’s only brought up twice; once for a big *gasp* moment during his breakdown in Everything’s Fine, and in I Am My Monster by Pearl, when she has to fill-in Bismuth, Lapis and Peridot.  Notably, it is never discussed around or by Jasper.  Y’know.  The person who actually died.
No indication of how (or even if) what Steven did is affecting his own self-image after his initial breakdown, how Jasper feels about what she went through beyond falling back into the Era 1 and 2 mindset.  No inkling of how the knowledge that Steven killed somebody has affected how anyone in his life thinks or feels about him; when Pearl brings it up in I Am My Monster, she seems to not even really believe it’s true.
If there are any consequences or talks about this incident, they’re skipped over between I Am My Monster and The Future, and we’re expected to assume that Steven and his therapist are dealing with it, I guess?
And yes.  It was an accident.  He did bring her back to life.  But it still happened.  If you hit someone over the head and they stop breathing, just because the paramedics are able to resusitate and stabilize them afterwards doesn’t mean you never hit them.
But here, it’s shoved aside because dwelling on it would take far too much time, and risks framing Steven in an unsympathetic way when he’s meant to be on the cusp of a breakdown.
Tumblr media
It just feels like careless writing to me.  They really, really wanted their big action scene with Steven and Jasper, but didn’t think (or maybe weren’t interested in thinking) about the seriousness or consequences of what Steven shattering someone would entail.
In my opinion, Steven shattering Jasper is one of the cheapest, laziest things they could have ever done with his character (and hers, for that matter).  To me, the entire thing feels entirely out of character.  It’s pure shock value; nothing more.
So yeah.  That particular writing decision just does not work for me.  And if you disagree... well that’s fine?  It’s fine.  We can agree to disagree?  I’ve read a lot of defense/praise for this episode, and honestly even after processing all of those opinions and all the time my thoughts about this plotline have been stewing in my brain, I still feel the same way.

Gem Glow
The Universe kids were running down the boardwalk after school, heading to the Big Donut. Talking excitedly about what they were going to get, and what order to do their homework.
"Come On Robbie, you're so slow! We'll never get those Cookie Cats with you dragging behind" Page yelled.
"Then pick me up, the only one faster than you is Steven, and he's already at Fish Stew, I have little legs and- Hey Soph, what're you doing?" Robbie answered. Alarmed, he shouts out when his twin grabs his arm.
"Short legs are no excuse, come on!" Sophie shouts back, dragging him faster down the slatted walkway. They caught up to their siblings in no time. Just in time, in fact, to hear the pained yelling of their oldest brother inside the donut shop.
"What do you mean 'discontinued'? Cookie Cats are the best! Why would they stop making them?" Steven questioned the girl behind the counter, Sadie. The rest of the kids murmured their own discontent at the news. Page offhandedly righted the ladder the stocking boy, Lars, was on when it tipped after her sibling ran into it. Sadie offered the kids the little freezer the ice cream sandwiches were displayed in, since they were just going to throw it away. Dejected, the four children walked off towards home with their new gift.
Arriving home, the kids walked into a chaotic scene. The gems, Bismuth, Amethyst, and Spinel were fighting green and black worm looking monsters, hitting or squeezing them until they poofed.
"Sorry Meatballs, we'll get these centipeedles out of the house as soon as we can" Bismuth said, squishing two of them between her hammer shaped hands.
"Uh guys, none of these have Gems" Amethyst yelled.
"Then there must be a mother around somewhere" Spinel answered, swinging a giant fist into one trying to climb up Page's leg. She reeled in her arm like a fishing rod, and after a quick look, decided there were no more immediate threats. The childen then unloaded their backpacks onto the kitchen table, Steven putting the small freezer, next to the big one, and reaching for the freezer door to grab snacks for his siblings.
"Woah, Cookie Cats! Lots of them! I thought they stopped making them?"
"That's what we heard too, Steven" Spinel said.
"So last night we went out and stole a bunch!" Amethyst shouted. She was sitting on the island between the sink and table.
"We didn't steal, I paid for them" Spinel retorted.
"It was my idea" Bismuth finished.
"Only because you were the one to see Garnet's warning this time." Spinel countered.
Steven and his siblings were barely listening as they each grabbed one of the treats out of the open door and jumped for joy. Spenel correctly mused out loud that the theme song was coming.
"Oohhh! He's a frozen treat with an all new taste" Steven started.
"'Cause he came to this world from outer space" Page continued.
"A refugee from an interstellar war" Robbie sang.
"But now he's at your local grocery store" Sophie finished.
Together they sang "Cookie Cat! He's a pet for your tummy! Cookie Cat! He's super duper yummy! Cookie Cat! He left his family behind! Cookiee Caaat!"
"Now available at Gurgen's of Route 109" Steven added at the end, getting chided by Page, as that's not actually part of the song. The children took a bite out of their sandwiches and happy sounds came from each of them.
All at once the kitchen started to be filled with various colors of bright lights as the children's gems all glowed at once, though with the shock they all dimmed out before anything else happened. Spinel gave them all a noodly hug, telling them that it was okay that they couldn't summon anything yet, it was just good that they glowed. A loud sound came from outside and when everyone rushed outside to see, a large Centipeedle loomed outside on the beach. The Gems all summoned or shifted their weapons and headed out to fight, leaving the children behind.
The Gems had trouble fighting the giant monster, and ended up pinned down behind one of the hands of the temple statue. The children couldn't stand to see their guardians in danger like this so they each headed out with the small freezer full of the treats so that they could try to summon something from their gems. It was all for naught though as the only thing they were able to summon was a tummy ache for each of them. Steven and Page worked together to throw the, now hated, freezer at the enemy and a short occurred that ended up poofing the monster with electricity. With the gem bubbled and in the temple, the makeshift family made it back to the house in time to see Greg pull up. He asked how the day went, and with a recap, only commented on the glowing of his children's gems. he asked if he could see.
The children grabbed the remainder of their first treats, and tried again, to no avail. Page quickly quipped that at least they still had these treats to remember the day, and as the kids took their bites, the gems started to glow this time. A glove appeared on Robbie's hand, immediately squishing his food and tipping him over onto the floor. Pearl's spear came halfway out of Page's forehead, point first, so the poor girl looked like a unicorn. Sophie grimaced in pain and moved her hair out of her eyes, her left one rolling around randomly as the child spouted off random things, new names of gems they didn't know and places they've never been. Steven stood there with Rose's shield hovering in front of him until he noticed it and it went lying around the house, embedding itself in a wall. when every calmed down from the shock, the weapons poofed, and Sophie calmed down, covering her now blind eye back up. Greg sent the kids to wash up for supper, the children looking positively green after eating so many ice cream sandwiches. Greg looked at his adopted sisters in law and made a comment about things changing now. The looks he got from them weren't encouraging.

The opening of the movie mimics that of a classic Disney movie
It has been two years since the events of Change Your Mind, and, in accordance with his mental state, Steven has aged to look like a 16 year-old, as well as received a new outfit
Aside from the opening flashback, Jasper does not appear in the movie. Most sightings have just been of other Jaspers
This is the first movie in the series
The movie contains a total of 38 songs
WD wrote a book about Stevens adventure
PDs legs are back on Homeworld
Other Heaven and Earth Beetle gems can be seen on the beach planet
The Zircons are alive and free (they can be seen in a crowd shot on a green planet)
Spinel can been seen in one of the locations during Stevens broadcast
The Diamonds have allotted airtime
The Diamonds have disbanded their armies, liberated their colonies, refrained from shattering, and have practices better manners. Blue has also stopped using her crying power
The Diamonds have gotten better at showing affection
While recognizing Steven as his own person, the Diamonds still fawn over him like Pink
A warp from Earth to Homeworld has been established
Stevens new house has several new features, including
-a warp pad within a greenhouse and Gem computer
-Flags representing Earth and Homeworld
-An actual second floor (Stevens room used to just be a loft)
-a balcony attached to stevens bedroom

In place of the barn, a community known as “Little Homeworld” has been made, as a place for the uncorrupted gems to live
Little Homeworld is 83% complete
Warp pads can be moved around
Amethyst and Steven have made up a handshake
Steven is no longer the shortest in the main squad
This is our first time seeing ‘original’ Amethyst
Amethyst didn't have a Diamond insignia when she first emerged
Amethysts size was not the only thing different about her when she first emerged. He limbs where segmented, her hair short, her outfit simplistic, and her intellect stunted
Amethyst considers the Uncorrupted gems and New Crystal Gems part of her family
Steven now runs in front of the group
A small house has been added to the lighthouse
Spinel (Pronounce SPIN-el) are made to be entertainers (ie. Best Friends)
Spinel’s design and animation appear to be inspired by a style over animation known as Rubberhose (popular in the 1920s-1940s) She also appears to inspired particularly by the characters of Mickey Mouse (original Spinel) and Oswald the Rabbit (Evil Spinel) judging by her buns/pigtails (How they are both always showing no matter the angle)
Spinel and Pearl know each other
Garnet's Gauntlets have her wedding rings on them
Spinels theme is electro-swing
Spinels can store objects in their gems
Spinels power is enhanced shape-shifting (which include the power to turn into a spinning top and turning her hands into giant fists)
The black lines on Spinels face resemble running mascara
Giant injectors exist, have Heart-Shaped gems at the top of them, and can fly
There hasn't been much combat since the events of CYM
Spinels gem cut is perfect
Spinels come in other colors
Spinel can move her eyes in different directions
Spinels squeak when they move
Items in gems gems stay with them after rejuvenation
In terms of ‘threat to Steven’ Lapis is still considered on the fence
Peridot doesn't know what rejuvenators are, implying that they don't exist/ aren't used in Era 2+
Blue Garnet’s outfit in the “Isn't it Love?” song sequence implies Sapphire is barefoot under her dress
Potent Biochemicals exist, which destroy organic life and organic materials, but does not affect gems
Rejuvenators , which are shaped like synths, can poof and ‘reset’ a gems memory, and were used to ‘correct’ gems how stepped out of line. However, the process can be somewhat easily reversed by unlocking a gems memory.
Judging by the title of her song (system/BOOT.pearl_final(3).Info ) this is the third time Pearl has been rebooted
Pearls are given a customization option whenever they first form, any are loyal to whoever activates the menu
The memories of Fusions are also reset when their components are reset
While Steven organic half is unaffected by the Rejuvenator, his gem was reset, causing his powers to be reset
The ability to access Lion's mane is a power exclusive to Steven, and is considered to be his easiest power
Spinel has abandonment issues
The Heaven and Earth Beetles engage in afternoon constitutionals
Until she learns ‘the truth’, every one of original Garnet’s lines in the movie is a question
The Uncorrupted gems wander around Beach City
Spinel does eat
Vidalia has made more Amethyst painting
Ronaldo's phone PIN is 989675979
The moment where Amethyst and Steven cheat as speed ball is a reference to the episode ‘Arcade Mania’
The moment where Steven pulls Amethyst out her hole in the Alpha Kindergarten is a reference the episode ‘On The Run’, where Pearl pulls Amethyst out of the Hole
Giant injectors are considered unstable, and are controlled through sound
The Warehouse is both a concert venue and safe house
Greg stores Sadie Killer shirts in his Storage Unit
Sadie Killer and the Suspect have gotten popular
Mike Krol (who guest starred in the episode ‘Last One Out of Beach City’) provided the bass, guitar, and drums for the song ‘Disobedient’
The majority of Uncorrupted gems are Quartzes
Amethyst considered Rose the love of Pearls life
Greg being uncomfortable about Amethyst shapeshifting into Rose is a reference to the episode ‘Maximum Capacity’
The moment where Garnet see ‘Rose’ at the concert is a reference to the episode ‘The Answer’
Pearl was metaphorically and literally freed when Rose left (Cant follow orders when the person who gives you them are gone)
Steven and Greg can fuse to form Steg
Stegs weapons include Stevens Shield, a dual Guitar, and his powers include levitation and the power to create shock waves
Pink had a garden on an asteroid, where she would play with Spinel
Pink used to be lonely on Homeworld
Earth was given to Pink by Yellow and Blue, but not White
Spinel used to entertain Pink as her ‘best friend’, but, without Spinel noticing, Pink grew bored with Spinel, and Pink eventually abandoned her in her Garden for 6,000 years
Spinel was left next to a patch of ‘Forget-Me-Nots’, a type of blue, white, and yellow flower
Other gem types can turn their gems
Steven is no longer surprised by Pinks actions
Gems can make their new forms somewhat taller or shorter

Connie's Sword can cut through metal
Steven believes he has changed in the last few years
Steven can summon multiple shields, change the shape of his bubble, use his bubble to create shock waves, form tiny bubbles around his fists, and fully levitate
Steve can make blood disappear with his healing powers
The gem at the top of injectors are their power source
Steven realizes that no matter what, his work will never be finished
Steven can regrow plants with his healing powers
Garnet says staying hydrated is important while smooching
Spinel is trying again at friendship, but believes she's already messed up too badly with Steven and the gang
The Diamonds were willing to move to Earth to spend more time with Steven
The Diamonds consider Homeworld boring without Steven
Yellow finds Spinel funny
The reprise of ‘Come Live With Us’ is a combination of the songs ‘Come Live With Us’ and ‘Found’
The Diamonds consider Earth disgusting
The shot of the Diamonds extending their hands to Spinel is a callback to the episode ‘Your Mother and Mine’ (when the Diamonds launched their final attack on Earth)
Spinel now lives with the Diamonds in place of Pink/Steven
The song ‘Finale’ is a reprise of the songs ‘Happily Ever After’ and ‘Change’
Beach City has been rebuilt since the events of the movie, but the cliff has a few new dents in it, and their are now large ravines under the city
Steven no longer has his pink jacket (or at least, he’ll have to get a new one)
Steven, Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl, Greg, and Connie put on a …...Broadway Musical? (Still not entirely sure if that canonical)

Dib: *opens the door of his home* Hey, guys! You won't believe this!
*Dib is suddenly attacked by a Centipeetle. It roars at him and he screams. A whip then wraps around it, revealing to be Raz*
Raz: 'Sup, Dib? *yanks the Centipeetle off of him*
*Coraline, Norman, and Mabel are fighting off Centipeetles on the Warp Pad, while Wybie, Dipper, Lili, and Neil are fighting in the kitchen.)
Dib: Awesome! What are these things?
Lili: *lifts up a Centipeetle* Ugh! Sorry, Dib. We'll get these Centipeetles out of your room. We think they were trying to get into the temple.
Dib: Aw. You don't have to get rid of them. They're really cool.
*The Centipeetle that Lili is holding spits acid onto the floor, dissolving it into a hole*
Mabel: *poofs a Centipeetle* Um, you guys? These things don't have gems.
Wybie: That means there must be a mother somewhere nearby.
*A Centipeetle sneaks up from beside Wybie, which he quickly smashes with his war hammer*
Coraline: We should probably find it before anyone gets hurt.
Div: *excitedly* Oh! Oh! Can I come?! Can I?! Can I?!
Dipper: Dib, until you learn to control the powers in your gem, we'll take care of protecting humanity, okay? *He snaps the neck a Centipeedle he’s holding”

That’s certainly one way to say she’s dead. Greg makes it sound like a sacrifice, like Rose chose to die to have Steven. Are Gems tied to their lifeforce? The Centipeedle Mother didn’t seem to have to give up hers to her children, so did Rose choose to make Steven a Gem for some reason? Or is this just a poetic way to talk about something Greg still can’t bear to face.

Welcome Back Everyone!
If you would like to submit art work for this week’s episode please do so before Friday when I will post the recap and update the Master List. Just click here to submit! If you would like to ask me anything or comment on my commentary. . . all asks are screened for spoilers. Just click here to send an ask
Yeah. . . I'm not even gonna briefcap that
What did we learn?
I'm not interested in watching Uncle Grandpa
Steven can summon his shield when he wants to protect his family
Amethyst looks uber cool in them sunglasses
** And So On To The List Of Lists **
Consolidated lingering Questions
The Gems:
Where do they come from? I now know they are not from Earth, they are from somewhere in spaceHomeworld, further away than our ocean can get in a 30 foot (10ish meters) diameter cylinder from the ocean floor.
How is power derived from them?
What about the gemmed enemies? the monsters used to be humanoid, how does that work, why??
What are Amethyst's unique Powers? Ball-rolling. Fire attack? Uses shapeshifting more.
During Ocean Gem it is mentioned by Lapis Lazuli that the only thing the Crystal Gems care about is Earth, but Pearl showed her complete disdain for humans on multiple occasions particularly Keep Beach City Weird where she said humans were insignificant. . . . so what about Earth do they care about so much? Pearl, at the very least, doesn't care about humans or Earth. She's only here because she was following Rose. Amethyst was born here.
What’s the deal with Amethyst’s strange relationship with gravity? seriously, did this just go away?
Who all can fuse? Pearl and Amethyst = Opal and Amethyst and Garnet = Sugilite and Garnet and Amethyst and Pearl = Alexandrite and Steven and Connie = Stevonnie
How old are each of them? It’s suggested that they’re centuries millennia old. Amethyst acts a bit like a teenager. Is she that much younger than Pearl? Where does Garnet fall? Pearl and Garnet are more than 5000 years old, probably much older. Why is Steven the only boy? Amethyst is around 4 to 5000 years old. Due to his dad's age and the fact that his dad is human, Steven must be less than 20. Based on his relationship with Connie, I'm gonna put his age at around 12.
How many boy gems are there everywhere?
Why did the Gems destroy the Galaxy Warp? It seemed like Pearl wanted to go home during Space Race, but she obviously can't deal with any possible relations with the other Gems in Warp Tour.
What happened between the Gems from the homeworld and the Crystal Gems? There's gotta be a HUGE backstory here. . . .
Does all that Crystal Gem vs Home Gem battle have anything to do with Rose's decision to create Steven?
The World:
Everything seems to be happening in Beach City. Are there other Gems in other towns? Like every town has a team of Crystal Gems protecting it? Or is this town some center for universal negativity, so the Gems are focused here? It seems pretty obvious that the Crystal Gems are the only ones on Earth. . . They stated no one else on Earth can use the warp pads.
Why on Earth are the Crystal Gems on Earth?
Where did Lion take Steven and Connie for training? To Rose's Armory Is that place, or a similar one, available to all gems? There's been no evidence of other Gems having similar places. Do you need a familiar to take you there? Apparently not. Pearl can take you there. How does Lion know the way? It's pretty obvious that Lion was sent to Steven by his mom. . . but still not understanding his powers and knowledge
Warp Pads. . . . Galaxy Warp. How did the Galaxy warp get here? Why is it here? Why is it broken? The Galaxy Warp is the only warp pad on Earth that leads off Earth. So it's obvious why it is here. I'm thinking the Crystal Gems broke the Galaxy Warp to avoid dealings with the other Gems. . . BUT WHY?
The House on the Beach:
This is more a curiosity, but I wouldn’t mind seeing the fight that took off that statue’s hands. I bet it involved Sugilite.
What is up with the living temple inside the house? Beating hearts, waterfalls, a pool for getting rid of evil spirits, a holodeck run by the imagination, dimensional shenanigans. Need much more history and understanding here.
Townies:
What’s up with Onion and his dad? Are they from some other planet?
Why would you make a place called Fish Stew Pizza?
What would make one believe a potato can provide protection from a multi-dimensional being. .. . also, are the Gems multi-dimensional? I don't see that.
Rose Quartz:
Why does Rose have to die to give Steven his superpowers?
Is Rose even dead? _pretty sure this is answered_ (-doubts-)
What would make her choose that? a prophesy? desire to give Greg a kid? gonna die anyway?
Did she give up her gem to HAVE a kid or to IMBUE a kid with the gem? My current theory is that the gem is a being that creates a physical form, and that Rose stopped being Rose in order to be Steven (sorta) as I think Rose is still part of the gem (not dead). So essentially Rose's physical form is gone, replaced by Steven's physical form.
Would removing the gem from Steven give Rose back her form, leaving Steven as a common human 12-year-old?
Lion:
What all does Lion know? How did he get his powers? He's a creation of Rose's, so she gave him his powers. He might even still be connected to her somehow.

Dislikes
Not a fan of the important role junk food plays in the show not as prevalent as it was before
I don’t relate to Steven much. He mostly annoys me. He's getting a bit more lovable. . . now it's Pearl that just really rubs me the wrong way (Probably because she thinks humans are insignificant).
Why is there not a main antagonist? Possibly Peridot or Homeworld Gems
Season 1: Episode 5 Frybo
Season 1: Episode 6 Cat Fingers
Season 1: Episode 18 Beach Party
Season 1: Episode 27 House Guest
Season 1: Episode 32 Fusion Cuisine
Season 1: Episode 48 Say Uncle
Likes
I like that all the answers to everything are not conveniently packaged in a single episode
I like Garnet…
and sometimes Amethyst…
Steven's constant struggle to figure out how to fit into his place in the Gems and complete lack of struggle to feel right at home with the humans. . .
I like Greg and his super awesome van
I like that it seemed like we landed in the middle of a life, rather than the beginning of a story… this continues to be true through every episode.
I like most of the townspeople and their relationships with Steven
I like Connie a lot. She is funny and smart and a perfect non-super for the story.
I like arcade games…
I like that there are so many details in the background like everywhere…
and it’s obvious the creators are nerds
I like Sour Cream
I like the representation of emotions related to motherhood that each of the Gems go through in their own ways.
I like that the makers of the show know what customer service is like. Either that or they have really disturbing imaginations.
I like that the show encourages people to think critically and discuss large questions.
I like that there is a whole dark seedy side that I’m only just peeking into.
Shh. . . Don't tell anyone. . . I also like Peridot       She seems like a misunderstood geek girl       just saying
I just want to remind everyone, I write these recaps after having only seen the episode once, a week ago, and often interrupted by my whole blogging thing. I mainly do it for myself to refresh my memory for the next episode, but since I post it, I thought I should ask your forgiveness if it isn’t exactly perfect (or even close). Don’t forget if you have a submission for artwork for today’s episode, submit before Friday using the link above, and I’ll pick one to use as the cover art.

rewatching gem glow and that bit about “these [centipeedles] don’t have gems!” “that means there must be a mother near by” is uh.....really fucking weird.
like. did they just not have all the plot details nailed down yet or are they actually suggesting that gems, at least this very specific type of gem when corrupted, can just....spawn children. could nephrite do that before she was corrupted??? is...is her gem weapon infinitely spawning minions???? what the fuck.

“Cheeseburger Backpack” and “Together Breakfast”
I might as well keep doing with this idk commentary thing. If there’s ever a time to rewatch these two episodes, its after SUF’s “Snow Day.”
I’ve made other posts talking about Future Steven’s general lack of nostalgia and how, yeah, it does sting a little to see, it makes sense as well, so I won’t go into it here.
Ah, Jamie, everyone’s favorite thespian delivery man, who is then never seen nor heard from for like, what, a solid fifty episodes? I mean, I know he’s seen in the background of other episodes in season one, but still. I remember when I first watched this episode, I kinda hoped he would be a reoccurring character. His simultaneous patience and complete bafflement with Steven was hilarious
RIP Mr. Queasy. Your sacrifice was noble and your presence... well nobody really cares. You just didn’t have the staying power of Cookie Cat, mate, sorry to say.
SU has always played fast and loose with its art style, letting whomever boarded an episode dictate how it looks. Other people in the fandom have taken issue with that, but I kinda have always liked it. It’s fun comparing how certain boarders draw each character, and even being able to guess who boarded an episode without looking at the credits due to the styles.
I didn’t really bring up the boarders in the last list commentary I did because, well, they all kinda felt too major to bother bringing up, if that makes sense. They’re all too involved with multiple other aspect of SU to really be able to talk about in a reasonable amount of time.
The only reason I bring it up here is because these two episodes were boarded by show creator Rebecca Sugar and then Supervising Director Ian Jones-Quartey, both of whom, from what I’ve noticed, are especially prone to playing around with art styles. You can usually tell when an episode has had their touch art wise, and I like that.
...Also because Jones-Quartey and Sugar got married not too long ago and I wanna take a moment to say Good for them.
Jfc Steven, my teeth hurt just looking at together breakfast.
How exactly does the door to the Gems’ rooms work? Does it act as a portal to their rooms? How does it connect to their Gems? I know the main CGs have physical rooms, but like, where? How are the Gems able to access each others’ rooms? Can they use the door or do they have to, like, crawl through the walls? We know fusions have rooms of their own, where are those rooms? Does the Temple just choose a random unoccupied space and make that the location of the room, or is it like a Rose’s Room situation, wherein there’s essentially a mini-pocket dimension that shapes itself to the fusion, since most fusions, while people in their own right, don’t exist on a permanent basis.
Also how does Gems Tech work, like, gravity wise?
We been knew that Pearl is a Sword Sapphic, but Pearl is a Sword Sapphic
LMAO while Rose was off faking her own death and “studying” earth’s delights, Pearl studied the blade.
While on the topic of Pearl... the fandom has long since known her as Bird Mom due to her nose, but I’m surprised nobody has given her with an aquatic maternal themed nickname (or if they have, one hasn’t caught on). I know most of the stuff connecting Pearl with water/the ocean is fairly recent (her Customization Settings being a shell in the movie, everything about the Reef in SUF’s “Volleyball”), but her room is clearly shown to be water themed here.
I’m with Amethyst here, don’t touch someone’s ish. Especially if its in their room.
ROSE’S ROOM CAMEO! This is why rewatching shows like Steven Universe is so much fun. I never caught that my first viewing.
Once again, you get the sense that the Crewniverse haven’t quite yet got everything figured out lorewise, especially when it comes to corrupted Gems (if that painting was one? I think it was said once that it was painted with Gem shards, but that’s obviously not fitting with later canon of Gem shard experiments. And also super messed up). They just straight up burn this sorry bastard. I guess, given that it didn’t seem to have a gem, it could be a “Mother Centipeedle” situation, where the actual Corrupted Gem is still out there, and this is just a mini enemy (or a virus?). That, or the gem is in the lava and Garnet just got it later.
These episodes start to dip into Steven’s relationship with the individual CGs, or at least Pearl and Amethyst. Garnet at this point is a stoic mystery, there to offer one liners or take leadership when Steven can’t (which is most of the time at this point).
Amethyst, I’ve felt, has always had more of an older sibling vibe to Steven- later in the series it feels more like an older sibling with an age gap, meaning they often act as parental figures- and its really cemented in this episode. She loves Steven but she ain’t above trolling him or annoying him. Meanwhile, Pearl was especially mom-like in “Cheeseburger Backpack.” Their exact connections with Steven aren’t delved too deep into yet, but there’s still enough individual interaction to pick up their roles in his life.
I can’t help but wonder though- Steven refers to them as his “buds” rather than family at this point. We know he’s lived with them for a while, but I realize we aren’t told how long that was. It’s my personal theory that he moved in around eight, when he started “stagnating” appearance wise, which means he’s been with them for a few years at this point. Given the fact that they’re often off on missions and leave him behind, I suppose it makes sense that there’s some disconnect at this point (shoot, “some disconnect” might as well be written on their flag at this point.
The CGs have been there all his life, but hey, technically my sister (12 years my senior) was there all my life, too, an it wasn’t until a few years ago that we really started connecting.
It’s really interesting to see/think about, given how far everyone has come. SUF, and SU overall, is drawing to a close soon. It’s hard to believe- it feels like I was just watching these episodes for the first time yesterday, but like Steven I’ve grown and changed over the years.
I’m gonna miss watching these characters grow farther, but at least I get to go back and really enjoy seeing them get to their end points.

SU(:F) theory: Is it (really) over?
To me, that ending was kinda... unsatisfying, and not just because there was a lack of finding a Pink Diamond separate from Steven (AGAIN). ^_^;  Like, for some reason, I Am My Monster didn't feel that... intense, somehow?  I mean, maybe it was the not-too-dark lighting, or the fact that the ep wasn't focused on Steven's POV (which I guess is interesting, but it also made the ep feel odd to me).  Or maybe it's because there wasn't much in the way of a battle.  But whatever the case, it just didn't fit my expectations, tension-wise. ^_^;
However, Is say that the BIGGEST issue for me is that there's still so much left to uncover.  I've previously mentioned [a short list of mysteries that haven't been solved], and I don't think that SU:F touched upon any of them.  I think I'll reiterate, add well as adding to it:
What happened to the other lions?  How did Rose get them in the first place?
The mystery of Amethyst having ears when most Gems do not.
The magic lizards that Lion kept eating, for Pete's sake! >.<
We still haven't really seen the colonies.
We haven't seen this building:
Tumblr media
That book in Rose's "junk pile" still seems important.
Tumblr media
WHAT WAS IN THE CHEST IN LION'S MANE?! O.O
We still know so little about Gem culture, esp. folklore, celebrations, history outside colonizing, etc.
We STILL don't really know what Gems made by/for White are like.
Yellow's extraction chamber hasn't actually been explained.
We still don't know what happened to Pink's court.
There are STILL multiple timeline conflicts: When Pink (supposedly) had each Pearl + Amethyst incubation periods, at least.
Did Pearl belong to White at some point (even if she doesn't remember)?
A song was teased via Blue, and we still haven't heard the whole thing.
Tumblr media
For some stuff I haven't mentioned before, I kind of expect gender politics to be brought up via Gems, esp. the uncorrupted ones: Mother Centipeedle (Gem Glow) + "That's not a leg!" (The Kindergarten Kid) seem like foreshadowing to me.  Plus, Jasper, Larimar, and Snowflake Obsidian all seem like they could be non-binary in some way.  Not to mention those two Gems that Yellow was working on.
Tumblr media
Speaking of the Centipeedle, we still haven't seen how Centi's doing, and I REALLY wanna see how Centi's doing. 3=  I mean, she was featured in the opening, so I kind of expected her to be featured in the show, again.
Tumblr media
I doubt that many (formerly) elite Gems are happy with all the social changes, i.e. they don't like the idea of "lesser" Gems suddenly being equal to them, and I bet that a lot of then don't like the Diamonds giving up command, either.  (I did notice that it was primarily common Gems and "off-colors" featured in Homeworld Bound, being all happy, particularly in the tour group and whatnot - mostly from Famethyst, and/or the uncorrupted Gems.  Seems like it could be a piece of foreshadowing.)
And for something uber-serious, I HIGHLY doubt that the Diamonds went around stomping out life on so many planets without making some enemies.  I mean, obviously Earth has sapient species, I think odds are that some other planets - namely colonies - had sapient life, too.  White even alluded to this.
Tumblr media
...And I'm willing to bet that at least one of those races or there has not been completely wiped out, and would be seriously powerful. ^_^;  At least, I think at least one of them would have friends that would (now) be powerful, and would be up for taking advantage of how all the Gem armies have now been disbanded. =D;
But yeah, I'd like to see sapient species on other planets, in general. ^_^
...Aaaand then there's pretty much everything else I've mentioned under the "rose quartz wasn't pink diamond" tag. ^_^;  I mean, sure, a fair amount of it has been genuinely disproven, particularly when it comes to when (or I guess you could say "if," at least for some cases) as well as how a lot of it would it would happen.  A lot of it is also seeming a lot more unlikely.  Still, there are a lot of things that still seem like they still need to be addressed, not the least of which being how little details of Pink's appearance just keep on changing.
Tumblr media
Even just in the movie, there's like a dozen different ways or so that her appearance varies - 15+ in the series, overall.  It's to the point where it seems heavily like they're using different models of her for different shots!
But yeah... there's still so much I wanna know. ;.;
Like I mentioned, some of those things do seem like foreshadowing - hints of things that are to be touched on later, and NOT to be simply left unresolved. ^_^:  That said, they do give me some hope that things will continue.
And personally, I do think that I Am My Monster brought up another (possible) mystery:
Tumblr media
I do wonder... what exactly does White mean by this?  How would White hurting Pink result in Pink hurting Spinel?   And SPECIFICALLY White (she's the only Diamond who didn't say we/us and entirely blamed herself) - I mean, sure what the others did probably started with her, aaaand maybe she has a tendency to put everything on herself (and that’s where Pearl got it), but I think this might mean something that White did specifically.
AFAIK, Pink/Rose didn't intentionally try to hurt anyone ("else"), even with the fact that she kept on being hurt.  So why would there be an exception for Spinel?  Particularly one that White would know/feel guilty about?
If you've been following me then you might be able to guess where I'm going with this: To me, it sounds like White might be slipping on the fact that she hid the real Pink on Earth's moon and used "Modify Memory" at an epic level; if White kept Pink from returning, Spinel would've been left alone FAR longer than Pink had intended. =(
...Also, the Diamonds STILL aren't going for an actual hug, even though this seems like a more-than-appropriate time to so.
Tumblr media
Heck, they're essentially the only ones who didn't (besides maybe Connie - Lion and the Cluster don't count).  Even Spinel managed one, and she had to stretch like CRAZY to do so. XD;
EDIT: One of the particularly-strong reasons why I consider this noteworthy is because White actually ran up with wide-open arms.
Tumblr media
(Say... is Blue waterbending herself over the water instead of running?  I believe she is. =3)
But yeah... I haven't heard anything, but I'm holding onto hope that there will still be something more... and not just because I'm still hoping that the REAL Pink will be released from the moon.  (Though that is certainly a part of it. XD)  Like, maybe there'll be another series called "Steven Universe Returns" or something.  It certainly seems like an appropriate title, at least. X3
