Reposted from @centerforgreatapes Let’s talk about orangutans. The Center for Great Apes is the only accredited sanctuary in all of North and South America for orangutans. The sanctuary currently is home to 12 big males. Additionally, we care for 15 female orangutans who live with and among the males. Add together the expenses of providing adequate space and quality and knowledgeable caregivers with the fact that orangutans eat a lot, we’re looking at approximately $25,000 per year (closer to $30,000 per male per year). Hi. I want to learn more about primates, but I don't know where to start. Do you know how and where can I begin this journey? Thanks.

Great question! I commend that you’re looking to go on a learning journey. It isn’t hard to learn about primates, but there are a lot of options. I would recommend starting with primate education thats intended to be accessible for wide audiences. A good way to do this is by going to the websites of reputable zoos and sanctuaries and looking at the resources they have.

If you like our blog, take a look at some other primate social media accounts that work directly with primates. On instagram, I follow napsaprimates, lemurscientist, ippl_summerville, gibbonsapiens, awajishimamonkeycenter, oran_girl, fauna.foundation, malaysiangibbons, sandiegozoo, orangutan_foundation, chimp_sanctuary, dukelemurcenter, bosfoundation, savethechimps, chimphaven, lemur.conservation.foundation, vervetmonkeyfoundation, genki_no_takaramono, neprimateconsrv, save_the_glt, gibbonconservationsociety, monkey_haven, liberiachimprescue, gorilladoctors, centerforgreatapes, and bos_uk, to name a few. If you follow the account of a primate foundation, sanctuary, or zoo that houses primates, look at who they’re following to find more good accounts! These accounts tend to link to other websites for more information too.

Another good source is Wikipedia! If you have a favourite primate you can get a lot of info on them there. Theres also nothing wrong with googling if you have questions, but if you have more complex questions I can understand that this might not be effective.

I am a big National Geographic enthusiast, you can buy online or print access (or both), or if you aren’t sure about spending money you can make a free account to access 3 free articles a month. If you have Disney Plus, watching Meet the Chimps is educational and super fun, and it was produced by National Geographic. National Geographic is where a lot of the sources on this blog are from! And speaking of our blog, all the underlined parts of our posts and answers are links that you can click on for more information.

Lastly, if you like videos ranging from short videos to full documentaries, I have been working on a YouTube playlist of educational and ethical primate videos. There are currently 95 videos of various lengths about a variety of species. You can find it here. It includes the entirety of orangutan jungle school clips available, zoo footage, and clips from Smithsonian channel and National Geographic features.

He's a dignified fellow who is closely bonded with his sister Maude (who lives in his social group) but who will also spit water at caregivers to get their attention! And now he desperately needs attention - He was used in a biomedical research laboratory before being retired to a Los Angeles refuge that unexpectedly shut in 2019. All the chimps must be rehomed at trusted sanctuaries.
