Too many students, not enough counselors
The Counseling and Wellness Center (CWC) serves New College by providing therapy and medical services to students. The center also holds events throughout the semester that help students establish wellness principles in their own routines. A mission such as this requires a team behind it, however. Since the beginning of the Spring 2024 term, the CWC has resorted to placing students on a waitlist…

not to out myself as a tiktok user (as if i haven’t posted mine here before) but why does tiktok require 1,000 followers to go live. on a “social media” app. i don’t want to be an influencer i just want to put the camera on while editing my poetry and yap with all of the five friends that make up my 90 followers like what’s the point. i know tiktok doesn’t understand what social media is supposed to be but. come on.
#does this mean i have to start being creative. all i know how to post about is crawlers and poetry :/#and i’m scared to legit outright post my poetry again after the counseling center call which wasn’t even a year ago 😭#i mean instagram’s an option but i’m hardly fond at that app anymore either. not that i’m any more attached to tiktok tbh#and like that’s mostly just for your followers. i wanna meet and chat with new people too :(#and before you say do an actual streaming platform: well you see i can’t.#i don’t have a proper ahem ‘streaming setup’ for games because all i have is my switch#nor can i do art streams because i do it on my phone. so like what’s the point#so like. i don’t want to do professional streaming i just wanna prop my phone up against a bag of goldfish#and chitchat while i write because i think it’s fun :(#grace being stupid#text post#personal

REALLY hate the myth regarding suicide prevention and mental health that "help is always available" when it's Certainly Fucking NOT and is in fact put behind a really expensive paywall in 100% of cases
#and yeah crisis call centers are free but they just tell you to go to a hospital which SHOCKINGLY costs money.#and counseling and therapy? cost money#not even just a little bit! a LOT! it's damn expensive!#and I'm not pretending to have a solution to this I just wish people didn't pretend like suicide prevention is so well-handled#and then go victim blame like 'oh well there was help available but they didn't take it so :/ '#like where IS it#suicide mention cw

Every day I must act normal despite knowing how the contrast between Memphis’s and Sana’s views of authority all traces back to how they see the same quasi-omniscient system exploited and by whom.
#🪪 Memphis Mylera#🪪 Sana Staravya#⌚ second imperial civil war#===========================================#context because I have been a very poor loreposter:#M & S were raised in the same cadet center (a state orphanage that rears children to be military officers and/or sewage administrators)#(the imperial definition of “military” is /weird/)#it’s not terrible quality-of-life-wise but it comes with there literally being eyes in the walls at all times#they’re not always actively watching you but if you do something wrong you can bet your tail they’ll find out#discipline is handled by an impersonal system that visibly runs on paperwork#cadets are raised reciting “proverbs” that are things like advice on how to lead and counsels on the value of loyalty#this all ingrains it into them that the government/military is omniscient and omnipotent#and Sana escapes this and gets adopted by rebels#(and more importantly by flagrantly-lawbreaking rich people who forge her an identity without a second thought)#Memphis can’t and has basically the worst possible career where she falls through every crack and is chewed up by every gear in the machine#the only person she sees break the system is literally its god -- Presiding Imperator Cassius Banneker#(I swear to God that at the end of the day he’s a good person but man does he do some bad things)#their views come out almost polar opposites and /boy/ does it explode when they finally get to talk about them#----------------------------------------------------------------------#I wrote ten pages of analysis on this a few months back so I won’t spoil the rest#🪪 Cassius Banneker#(tangentially)#arguably I should also cite the Keplers but I don't explicitly namedrop them#nor do I describe them very well#I’ll have to do a post properly explaining their weird social class (that I just dismissed as “rich people” here)#it has no easy earth analogy (yet; I think an approximation may develop) so that may take a while

Getting into the New College yoga craze
Getting into the New College yoga craze

They're not even giving me therapy
#the actual official recommendation from the actual counseling center was ''your problems aren't bad enough to get help.''#or maybe more accurately ''you can't articulate your feelings well enough to convince us you need it.“#this was my last fucking option.#vent

Staff Merit Award: Monica McBroom
When staff, student employees or interns have a human resources-related question, Monica McBroom goes above and beyond be a knowledgeable resource to her team. While the senior human resource coordinator doesn’t work with students on a daily basis, her expertise is critical. She helps power the work of those on the front line so they can focus on supporting all of our students’ mental health and well-being. The Division of Student Affairs — the hub of student life and well-being — is recognizing her efforts with a Texas Parents Staff Merit Award.*
“Our counselors, providers, health promotion coordinators and others need to be able to concentrate on doing their job — to directly support the students — and not the behind-the-scenes aspects of their employment. I want to make sure they have the answers that allow them to quickly and efficiently do what needs done without having to worry.”
Monica McBroom Senior Human Resource Coordinator Counseling and Mental Health Center and University Health Services
McBroom handing out an onboarding packet.
McBroom is well known for how she welcomes and onboards staff to the Counseling and Mental Health Center. These providers make a significant impact — 98% of clients said if they had a problem with their mental health in the future, they would seek help from a mental health professional. She also contributes to the Division’s foundation of belonging and well-being by onboarding staff to the Longhorn Wellness Center, Center for Students in Recovery and SHIFT.
By inviting important conversations and answering questions, McBroom helps improve the overall culture of her organization. She provides useful information rapidly and accurately, and cares about how people experience onboarding — which can be both exciting and stressful.
In addition, she has taken extra steps to become informed about the unique legal, educational and employment considerations for international students becoming interns and employees.
McBroom (second from right) at Donna Bellinghausen’s retirement party in 2017
“All staff members and interns are influenced positively by Monica’s competence, kindness and dedication to answering complicated questions related to difficult HR topics,” said a nominator. “She is a committed, highly-professional person with a strong attention to boundaries while also conveying warmth and optimism. She is a pleasure to work with and a wonderful colleague.”
Every day, McBroom exemplifies what the Division is all about — sharing expertise, guidance and support so the team can work together to influence the Longhorn life of every student.
Kudos to McBroom — one of the Division’s human resources professionals who play a key role in powering our programs, spaces and resources! Her dedication to our team members is critical to helping them support all students’ well-being — to be physically, mentally and emotionally healthy.
