OTD in Music History: Celebrated 20th Century Spanish virtuoso cellist Pablo Casals (1876 - 1973) dies in Puerto Rico.
Casals is generally regarded as the pre-eminent cellist of the first half of the 20th century, and one of the greatest cellists of all time. He made many recordings throughout his career—including some as a conductor—but he is undoubtedly best remembered for the landmark series of recordings of the Bach Cello Suites that he made between 1936 and 1939.
In 1957, the 81-year-old Casals agreed to make a short movie with director Robert Snyder, entitled, “A Day in the Life of Pablo Casals." In the course of an extended interview, Snyder asked Casals why he still continued to practice between 4 - 5 hours every day. Without missing a beat, Casals quickly answered: “Because I think I am making progress.”
PICTURED: A c. 1900 real photo postcard, showing the very young Casals posed with his cello.

From Claves Records I have received yet another pre-release CD set for reviewing, this time Petr Skalka's 2020 recording of Bach's 6 Suites for Cello Solo (BWV 1007 – 1012). The hardcopy recording is due for release on 2024-02-08. While I receive far more CDs for reviewing than I can digest, I decided to review this one. Not by itself, though, but as part of the extensive comparison of recordings of the cello suites that I recently started (that's definitely an exception, as usually adding to existing comparisons is way too laborious).
The media information and general description is available in the recently posted Comparison Summary, at
I have only reviewed the Suite No.1 in G major, BWV 1007, so far. The review of Petr Skalka's performance is found at

Head in hands. 'I Spy' with Pulp is such a banger for Zor. It's giving me the urge to finally think about designing them (+ redesigning a couple others..). There's something so good abt some of the lyrics like: "you see I spy for a living // and i specialise in revenge // on taking the things that i know will cause you pain". Like....likee.............
Theres earlier parts that also make my brain tick: "it may look like to the untrained eye // im sitting on my arse all day // I'm biding my time until i take you all on // my lords and ladies, i will not fail // i will prevail, cause i spy"
PLUS the name. That did not help the situation. Alas Different Class by Pulp 🤝 IEYTD Characters. Similar can be said about the Chicago soundtrack but thats a. Whole other ramble

Hi everyone!
Back in April, I was talking about my undergraduate senior recital and encouraging people to watch the live stream. While the livestream sadly had some technical difficulties, I was provided with a wonderful video of almost the entire recital afterwards.
If you were unable to watch the livestream but are still interested in watching the performance, please do go and listen! (It is about an hour though, so make sure you have time, haha!)
