Did you know that our mitochondria play a role in the processes of inflammation, aging, cancerogenesis, neuro-degeneration, controlling the stress response, cell death and energy production!? ——- The effects of plant compounds on mitochondrical health and apoptosis have looked at identifying molecules (aka phytochemicals) found in various plants/foods, which can exert direct and indirect antioxidant mechanism properties as well as selective cell death —— Curcumin and Gingerol (found in ginger) for example are effective scavengers of free radicals such as hydroxyl radical and nitric oxides —- Curcumin is also able to up regulate cyto-protective (Cytoprotection is a process by which chemical compounds provide protection to cells against harmful agents) cell response by modulating the expression of genes that encode for antioxidant proteins such as superoxide dismutase, catalase and proteins that replenish the glutathione reserves such as glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase and GST —— Resveratrol can exert indirect antioxidant activity by modulating the expression of mitochondrial proteins, as well as increasing the expression of ROS scavenging enzymes (aka less free radical damage in your mitochondria) —— Quercetin is able to trigger mitochondria-mediated apoptosis (programmed cell death) both by direct and indirect mechanisms —- Quercetin can scavenge mitochondrial ROS and modulate the expression of pro- and antiapoptotic proteins that belong to the Bcl-2 family; Quercetin up-regulates Bax and Bak (which belongs to the Bcl-2 gene family, which is most known for their regulation of apoptosis) and down-regulates Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL (which inhibit both apoptosis and proliferation) —— In sum, eat more plant compounds ——- #briannaapproved #plantcompounds #mitochondria #mitochondrialhealth #apoptosis #inflammation #cancer #celldeath #freeradicals #ROS #energy #energyproduction #enzymes #epigenetics #genes #glutathione #antioxidants (at Gianni's Pizzeria) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAxqpQsDTnj/?igshid=euejo1qpr6fw

Ursula’s Cartridges - Saltwater Donuts
Tumblr media
“Saltwater Donuts” by Ursula’s Cartridges has a nice mix of old school break dancing hip hop, dark ambient, and vaporwave stylings. Almost reminiscent to Malcom McLaren’s Duck Rock from back in the day. Released on Celldeath, Los Angeles, CA.

Postdoc Position in Cell and Molecular Biology UT Southwestern Application Deadline: 2022-10-01 Najafov Lab at UT Southwestern Medical Center is interested in filling a Postdoctoral Researcher position in 2022/2023. We are looking to hire a highly ambitious and motivated scientist interested in molecular mechanisms of necroptosis and cancer immunotherapies. Lab experience with biochemistry or cell and molecular biology techniques is required. A significant experience with at least one of the following is required: (1) studying protein or lipid kinases; (2) studying E3 ubiquitin ligases; (3) studying cellular metabolism; (4) studying anti-tumor immunity and/or anti-PD-1 immunotherapy and/or cell-based immunotherapy. Experience working with mouse models is preferred but optional. An ideal candidate would have experience with cell culture, western blotting, fluorescence microscopy, live-cell imaging, flow cytometry, and molecular cloning. Projects in the lab include both regular and high-risk, high-reward projects, involving both necroptosis and identification of previously unknow...
