Happy Windrush Day! 🌟

Today, we honor and celebrate the incredible men and women who came to Britain to help rebuild the nation after World War II. 🌍✊🏾

76 years ago, the Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks with 1,027 passengers from the Caribbean.

Today, we remember our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents who left everything behind to restore a war-torn Britain.

However, we must also acknowledge those still affected by the Windrush scandal. Many are living in poverty, awaiting compensation after decades of unjust immigration policies.

As of March 2024, around 1,050 claims are still pending.

the thing is that martha and the doctor are an interesting, complicated, eternally evolving in my head dynamic that completely change the game of the narrative, and I am so into them and I will think about them forever and ever

and on the other hand I suspect that at least a certain percent of it comes from my specific reading of the doctor-as-character, and from things that the writing brought up around martha, her position in her family, her history as a medical student, her later decision to join UNIT and Torchwood, her more-than-average complex feelings both during and after being a Companion about what that life meant for her, and what the doctor changed in her life, that I would say were intentional, but weren't brought up in a narrative that was given as much space and time (ha) as other companions, and so she is eternally left in character limbo where I can only ask questions (and read fanfic) and stipulate on what this story was all about for her, and where she went as consequence, and what her feelings are about having been within it, and of course the parts that aged more poorly related to a bunch of white people writing a black woman as a lead character who weren't so well-versed on nuance as one would wish... so it's also the most frustrating dynamic in nu!who, if not all of doctor who, for me, because there is no attempt at giving it a proper end from her side, in the way there has been for so many other companions, including of course lots and lots of classic!who companions

on the third hand you would really want that potential bringing-back to be interesting in a way that interacts with their past dynamic, and fun for freema to do, and you'd worry about the amount of racist backlash that might occur, because nobody was giving martha grace as a character in the first place, would this past complexity that seemed to go over a lot of peoples' heads be something that the show perhaps should be more explicit about, so that there is no ambiguity as to how this series of events affected her and why it's more complicated than with other companions, and how does it both honour her character's inherent strengths, while also not having to make her be so strong All The Damn Time

Been seeing some gifs from this IG story but they didn’t capture Mel exclaiming very loudly and clearly to Eric, ‘WHERE ARE MY CHOPSTICKS?!’ I thought her comment was cute, chopsticks are a huge part of her culture, and this was one of the main parts of Meleric's exchange, so I thought it important that this doesn't get left out of the caption. Culture is cool and it's cool to see them both engaging with it and talking about it. 🥢

It's Lucy Chen's first Mother's Day.

In the soft morning light filtering through the curtains, Tim bustled quietly in the kitchen, his heart brimming with anticipation. Expertly eyeballing ingredients into a large bowl, he prepared a breakfast fit for a hotshot: fluffy blueberry matcha pancakes with fresh berries, and decaf chai.

As he arranged the breakfast tray with care, Tim couldn't help but reflect on the journey that had led them here. Lucy and he had weathered unimaginable losses, yet emerged stronger. And now, as they awaited the arrival of their daughter, their hearts overflowed with gratitude for the miracle of new life. Neither had really dared to entertain the idea of parenthood until now.

Lucy's choice of their daughter's first and middle name, a tribute to a resilient little girl who had touched her heart at work, and a nod to her beloved grandmother Anna, spoke symbolic volumes of the strength that she wanted to instill in her daughter.

When Tim first met Anna, it all clicked for him. He knew exactly where his Boot got her tenacity from. Over time, Lucy shared with him that Anna gave her the confidence to stand up to bullies who made fun of her for being Chinese and supported her as she became a cop even as Vanessa had hesitations. Tim was at first a little intimidated by Anna because she's tough, loves fiercely, and could've whipped Tom Bradford into shape, according to his wife. He also has an immense appreciation for Anna, for all the adversity that she had to go through and overcome, to create a better world for people like his wife and their future kids - his family.

As he made a smiley face out of strawberries and bananas for Lucy's pancake, his phone lit up with a text from Anna:

I couldn't have asked for a better dad for my great-granddaughter.

With breakfast ready and a smile tugging at his lips thanks to his grandma-in-law, Tim made his way to their bedroom, where Lucy lay snuggled under the covers, still asleep. He gently woke her with a kiss and set her breakfast tray on her nightstand.

"Happy Mother's Day, Lucy."
