This was an incredibly beautiful nurse stump I found on Alder Ridge at Oxbow Regional Park in Oregon (it's near the flight path for Portland International Airport, hence the plane sounds near the end.) This is likely an old western red cedar (Thuja plicata) stump, hollowed out by decay and hosting a wide variety of mosses, lichens, fungi and other living beings. It was probably a good four feet in diameter at the base, perhaps a little larger, and while large portions of it have long since returned to the soil and the nutrient cycle, this ancient tree continues to feed the forest.

The Cedar of Lebanon tree. A large evergreen conifer that has great religious and historical significance in the cultures of the Middle East, and is referenced many times in the literature of ancient civilisations.

This was an encounter with a really nice nurse stump that I had earlier this fall. Dead trees are the pantry of the forest; all the nutrients they stored in their wood throughout their lifetime is freed by detritivores and decomposers, and becomes available to plants like the western red cedar in the video.

Totally random, but - I always found the Lebanon flag so beautiful, especially because I've always loved pine trees. 🇱🇧 🌲✨🌈 So it's one of my favorites ever.

Isaiah 41:19-20
“I will put the cedar in the wilderness,
The acacia and the myrtle and the olive tree;
I will place the juniper in the desert
Together with the box tree and the cypress,
That they may see and recognize,
And consider and gain insight as well,
That the hand of the Lord has done this,
And the Holy One of Israel has created it.

Before I came to know Christ I loved nature. I felt so much peace in places where trees and water and animals were and lived. I know many who feel this peace without recognizing it is God in every place like this. It is he who made these beautiful places and spaces. You are seeing a living God in all of it.
“He counts the stars and calls them all by name”
Psalm 147
Imagine this when you are struggling. Think on it. Our God literally knows and has named each and every single star. Do you realize how many there are? He takes the care to know each of them. To name them and place them. How much more do you think of how he must care for you?
To know each of us. Care for us. Love us.
You are never alone. You are always protected.
Our God is an awesome God
A living breathing God.
Jesus Christ is just one of his names.
I bow in love and adoration for all of time.
