It’s been noted many times that George drew inspiration from the Wars of the Roses as he was working on A Game of Thrones, and there were several parallels pointed out by the fandom as York vs Lancaster feud finding reflection in the war between Houses Stark and Lannister. Recently I’ve been doing some reading on Cecily, Elizabeth of York’s sister, and found some peculiar details.

The noble lady was married three times: first, she was wed to Ralph Scrope of Upsall, one of the kings supporters who was fames for his success in the Battle of Bosworth (memory brings to mind the wildfire and Tyrion’s success at the Battle at Blackwater). It was an arranged marriage she had no say in that brought no heirs and was annuled with the coming of a new king.

Some time later Cecily married for the second time, her new husband was John Welles, the king’s half-uncle. It was a strategic marriage yet as a result Cecily gave birth to two daughters. They remained married until his death, which lead to Cecily’s three year mourning.

Then Cecily married for the third time. Her third and last husband was a Lincolnshire squire — Thomas Kyne (the name is still debated on by the historians). He was well below her station and it’s disputable whether the King would have allowed for such a misalliance to happen, that is why she wed Kyne in secrecy and there no date of the wedding day was preserved in the recordings. Everything leads us to believe she chose this unlikely man to become her husband of her own accord despite his low status because she fell in love with him. This was not another marriage of convenience or for strategy, this time, the third time, she married for love. Together they produced two children: a boy and a girl. Some accounts say that they both live on the Isle of Wight, up until her death.

In conclusion, the result is this: the first two marriages are proven unlucky (with the first ending in annulment, the second ending in the husband’s death), the third lucky marriage is for love.

(This post has been brought to you for educational purposes and fun, don’t take it too seriously. Obviously, even though I drew some parallels between the two princesses’ marital affairs, I do not think that all the aspects of Cecily’s story must be transferred and applied to Sansa’s, but I do find the parallels interesting.)

The Reading Nook (Minerva McGonagall x OC)

Summary: Cecily and Minerva spend a quiet night in together participating in one of their favorite pastimes; reading.

Minerva sat in the newly furnished reading nook, nestled beside the warm, crackling fireplace, a cup of tea in hand. The room was adorned with plush armchairs and shelves upon shelves of books, both magical and muggle alike. Her green eyes twinkled with the dancing flames as she picked up a book and waited for Cecily to return from the shops.

Not but a moment later, Cecily entered the room with a pile of muggle books in her arms. Her eyes lit up with excitement as she noticed Minerva, who looked up from her book and gave her a soft smile. The love that had blossomed between them was a secret to most at Hogwarts, but not here. This was their sanctuary.

"Minerva, you wouldn't believe what I found at a muggle bookstore in London," Cecily exclaimed, setting the stack of books on the coffee table.

Minerva raised an eyebrow playfully. "I'm sure I'll be pleasantly surprised. What did you get this time, my dear?"

"I have here a collection of muggle poetry and a novel about a magical love story in the muggle world. I think I’ll start that one tonight."

"That sounds delightful." Minerva patted the open spot beside her, and Cecily shrugged off her cardigan, hanging it on the hook before joining her. They then settled together onto the sofa, Cecily taking the spot on Minerva's left, resting her head on Minerva's shoulder.

As they read, Minerva couldn't help but steal glances at Cecily. Her heart swelled with affection for this extraordinary woman who had brought a touch of the muggle world into her life. The way Cecily's eyes danced over the words, and how her fingers delicately turned the pages, enchanted Minerva in a way that even magic couldn't explain.

After a few hours, they set the books aside, sipping on their cooling tea. Cecily's fingers intertwined with Minerva's as they sat in contented silence, appreciating the comfort of each other's presence.

"You know, Minnie," Cecily began softly, "I like evenings like this."

Minerva turned to kiss Cecily's forehead. "I do too. Reminds me of more carefree times."

Cecily's eyes glistened with tears of happiness. "I love you, Minerva."

"I love you too, Cecily."

And so, in the warmth of their cozy reading nook, surrounded by books and love, Minerva and Cecily tucked in for the night, reading until their eyes were too tired to see the words in front of them and they drifted off to sleep.

“Women's efforts to provide for their younger sons and daughters often brought them into conflict with their oldest sons. As heirs, eldest sons frequently resented provisions for their siblings that reduced or burdened their inheritances. Mothers' efforts to provide for their younger children were particularly threatening to their eldest sons when they were heiresses and had power to dispose of their own property, but men's provisions for their widows also caused trouble between women and their sons. Indeed, husbands' provisions for their widows usually represented a much heavier burden on the family's estates than their bequests to their younger children. Furthermore, widows' dowers and jointures often interfered with the heir's power over his inheritance for years... Disputes about the provision for widows and women's efforts to secure the welfare of their daughters and younger sons often became intertwined when women served as their husbands' executors.

All of these factors played a part in the bitter quarrel between Cecily, dowager marchioness of Dorset, and her eldest son Thomas, the second marquess. In 1504, Lady Cecily, who was her father, William Lord Bonville's, sole heir and the executor of her husband's estate, announced her intention of marrying Lord Henry Stafford,  the duke of Buckingham's younger brother. Stafford, who paid 2,000 to Henry VII for permission to marry her, obviously expected the match to be a profitable one. The young marquess was understandably concerned about the effect the marriage would have on his inheritance, given the legal rights his mother's new husband would acquire over her and her property. The dispute escalated until Henry VII intervened. The settlement they signed after appearing before the king's council permitted Cecily to continue as her first husband's executor despite her remarriage. Under the terms of his will, she would receive the income from the estates he wanted set aside to pay his debts. However, she would not receive her dower until the debts were paid and she had turned the property over to her son. In addition, the council severely limited Cecily's power to dispose of her own inheritance: after her death, she had to bequeath all of it to Thomas; until then she could grant only lands worth up to 1,000 marks a year, and then only for a limited period of years. The obvious intention was to prevent the marchioness from permanently endowing her new husband at the expense of her eldest son. Her rights as an heiress were severely limited in his favor and, in a larger sense, in favor of the institution of primogeniture.

  By 1522, Lady Cecily and her son were openly feuding once again, this time about provision for her younger children. As a result of Cardinal Wolsey's mediation, they signed another elaborate agreement. Each of them promised to contribute to the dowries of the marquess's four sisters, while in addition Cecily agreed to create annuities from her estates for three of her younger sons.”

There were some sketches, quick pencil strokes that he had never seen before that day, fantasies that the Corinthian had about him and put on paper. Daniel had discovered these by sneaking into the room the Nightmare used to paint. It had all started from there.
