This morning, I drove to the easternmost reaches of the Las Vegas Valley, to interview, film, and photograph #CeceRodriguez, a few months shy of her 100th birthday. The only female among the artists painting on #BlackVelvet in Hawaii during the 1960s and 1970s, the self-taught Rodriguez’s #BlackVelvetPaintings have been exhibited and sold in galleries around the world; and to this day, hers remain among the most sought-after and coveted examples of the medium, by collectors. The five #VelvetPaintings shown were originally sold some fifty years ago to a prolific collector named #DrLorenKitch (his real name, I swear!!) and are now part of the collection of @VelveteriaLA (aka #DTLA’s Velveteria Epicenter of Art Fighting Cultural Deprivation).
