quick CAS rant

These are CAS things I have noticed but have been very infuriating for me as I like to fill towns with my own townies.

When I was creating a sim, I set their sex as male but had preferences as feminine and had the pronouns she/her. I like creating diverse sims and wanted to mess around with the new options with pronouns. In CAS and relationship this sim is listed as a brother rather than a sister or sibling. I can see how a fix for this can be more nuanced than matching the term to the pronouns, but still irritating nonetheless.

the wrap style of the hijab available only under everyday and not for formal, party, etc. While this is a simple fix of removing the dress type tag, it shows a lack of thought or perhaps ignorance by the sims team.

There are very few modest clothes and the ones that are look so... old. No hate to people who dress in this style, but if I am trying to make a sim that dresses modestly and is a teen or young adult, there are really no clothing options available for them to wear that look nice/fashionable. I know I spoke on this in another post, but I am so tired of having to rely on CC to make sims. I believe that CC should be there to enhance and to explore more styles, and I love CC creators and modders within the community, but it again feels like we need these people to make the game playable rather than to enhance it. Again, I don’t think it should be so hard to find a dress or outfit in game that can cover the chest, arms, and legs that also looks like a real outfit somebody would wear (more emphasis on the dresses).

Also, the lack of disability rep is upsetting. I recently got mocked for this on twitter, and it did remind me that not everybody knows that I am disabled and me caring about accessibility and representation isn’t from some place of wanting to feel like I’ve done something but rather because it is something that I and several of my friends face, and it hurts to not be able to see these options within the game. I don’t want to have to play in a world and have to imagine they are magically cured. At least in the sims 3 there were canes, granted they were for elders, but more than the sims 4 has.

I do apologize if this feels choppy, I’ve been writing this in between other things so not all thoughts are properly connected!

Obviously I understand that there are more issues and things to tackle in game, but it feels so disheartening when I play this game where the whole idea is that you can create you or at least people like you but then don’t give us the full ability to live this out.

1. What has been your favorite time period to play in or which one are you most excited for?

I'm still early on my legacy so for now I would say my favorite is still 1890, because is was a fresh start for me and my tumblr. I'm looking forward to 1920 (especially for fashion), and 1960/70! Cool music, cool style!

2. Do you have a favorite piece of historical cc? (CAS or BB)

I usually do not use cc in my builds, but I eventually will. For now I'm finding especially useful the typewriter from @madameriasims4 great creation! Edit: forgot to mention CAS: @twentiethcenturysims “Darling updo” is my favourite in the game. @happylifesims what can I say? Awesome dresses (cannot wait to use your creation during 1910 and 1920). @gilded-ghosts I’m in love with the dress from “The Stately set”... @vintagesimstress who is on hiatus for now, @linzlu etc...

3. Who is your favorite sim currently?

Currently my heir Luther. But I’ll always have a soft spot for his younger brother Lawrence Junior. I had a story for him as well, but I don't know if I'll ever find the time to do the screenshots. Maybe I'll do a short spin-off, dedicated to Lawrence. Who knows.

4. What is your favorite world?

Brindleton Bay for sure! Henford-on-Bagley is great too!

5. Are you more gameplay or story focused?

Mixture! I have two save files, one for the story and one for the game play. I play the game for a while, then I use the “screenshot” save file to recreate the story in a more realistic way.

6. Do you like to play with pets in your historical saves?

Never had pets for know, apart from the cattle. I’ve to add them... maybe in the future! I love animals in real life, in the sims not so much. 

7. What's your biggest immersion breaking pet peeve with the game?

TOWNIES. I'm taking screenshots, perfect light, perfect poses but then... a weirdly dressed townie appears! 

8. What's your favorite in-game historical item? (CAS or BB)

I feel like in sims 4 there is not historically accurate specific objects. Some decors are fine, like the "old fashioned camera sculpt", or the "antique tomes sculpt" and so on... there are some "timeless" forniture with a more vintage appearence both in Basegame and in other packs. I'm expecially enjoyng the Country Kitchen kit (great decors fot the kitchen) and Cottage Living pack.

9. What would you like to see as a new pack or asset to the game?

Generation would be great but I really would love to see more sports (tennis, soccer, basketball and so on...) and a REAL vacation pack, with resorts or even cruises! Also I love music, so why there is not an actual playable music career??? I loved the sims 3 music career, with all the concerts and stuff. 

10. What pack do you think is invaluable as a historical simmer?

Considering worlds and "build and buy": Cats and Dogs, Get Together, Cottage Living, University. In terms of gameplay probably only Cottage Living!

11. Do you have a favorite mod to enhance historical gameplay?

I don’t, I try to use less mod as possibile. Should I add some?

12. What's your ideal family size for playing?

Probably four, I really like to top my sims careers and master their aspiration.  

13. Do you use poses?

A lot! I’ve strated without them... but know... 

14. Do you use any overrides in your game?

Not that I remember!

15. Do you, or did you, play off-the-grid during your game?

Yes, for the first generation I did. I may go back to off-the-grid during war time. 

16. What lifespan do you play on?

Personalized lifespan, using MCC Comander.

17. What inspired you to start playing a historically?

Well... you know... I’ve a degree in History of Arts and Archeology, so dusty old stuff always fascinated me. Also, I’m a sucker for historical books!

Cottonwood Hills Medical Centre is, as one might expect, the hospital lot for @martinessimblr​’s Cottonwood Hills. (Though technically, it’s “No Visitors Allowed”.)

No one EP or Store set is required in order for this lot to be playable, though it should be noted that the science research station requires University Life, and the hospital rabbithole is from the Riverview Store World. In theory, there would be no problem if you replaced this rabbithole with a different one, but keep in mind that all rabbithole hospitals differ a bit in size, and also the playable module was colored specifically to match the Riverview hospital (which is itself not CAStable). Riverview is free from the Store anyway, so you might as well just have this.

I have listed some individual items that are from EPs and SPs, when I thought they might be easy to mistake for CC items. I have also listed all Store content, where identifiable.

Tips about missing CC + notes about playability:

I was not able to track down the patterns used on the mint-green walls seen throughout the build, as well as the yellow-toned wood plank floors

The walls appear mostly as-is, until you go to CASt them at which point the wall texture reverts to blank white. The floors do not fare as well, having lost all their wood grain, but do appear as a similarly yellow color.

What you can do to make sure you preserve the same feeling is to switch to the CASt / recolor / palette tool, then instead of just clicking the wall you want to update, SHIFT+clicking it, so that the changes you make will apply to only one wall or floor tile, rather than all the contiguous ones. This way, you can make sure that your new recoloring matches the feel of the original color as closely as possible.

I suspect the wood floor pattern (used in the consultation rooms and inpatient rooms) come from this pattern set that sadly cannot be found anywhere online... a lot of kissme87′s conversions have been backed up at places like SimsCave, but this particular set seems to have been left out... if anyone can send them to me for reupload, I would greatly appreciate it.

Recommended replacements for wood plank pattern: while the original wood pattern seems to be lost forever, JaneSamborski @MTS seems to have done her own converting of some of the same TS2 floors. Her version of the same pattern can be found here, called "Walk the Plank”.

Recommended replacements for wall pattern: Honestly, the walls look fine with the blank texture reCASted to the right shade of green, or a BG paint texture if you want more depth.

CC from Karas Watching Society (the books in the research wing, for this lot) does not show up in my game as placed, for some reason. You will have to place it manually. 

Playability: Martine evidently built this lot with some degree of playability in mind (and she did such a gorgeous job that she is seriously making me reconsider my “RH-only for RH careers” approach), but at the time, the mods that would have been necessary to achieve this were simply not there. Since Martine finished Cottonwood Hills in 2014, however, there has been an influx of new mods that could really enhance the gameplay potential of this lot. Some I recommend you could use:

Reception area: The Custom Generic Role mod by Arsil @MTS, to create a “receptionist” or nurse on-duty.

In 2015, @aroundthesims​ Sandy released a huuuuge pack of hospital-themed conversions from TS4 GTW. Along with quite a few decor items (which can be mixed-and-matched with the Hekate999 hospital decor), it also includes items like functioning “X-ray shadow boxes”, “chemistry analyzers”, and “robot surgery units”. There’s even a Supernatural EP potions register that looks like a regular computer, so you can create an in-house pharmacy.

The computer screen in the consultation office is decorative, and placed on an OMSP to boot. I wanted to make a functional workstation, so I placed the matching functional computer by Sandy in the normal slot, and positioned the decorative monitor off to the side to mimic the multi-monitor setup that can be seen in many medical offices.
