↠ HISTORY OF ASPEN I grew up in a family that was steeped in all things stories: grandparents, aunts and uncles always telling stories at family gatherings; parents read to me before bed; watching too many movies and cartoons; staying up way past my bedtime trying to sneakily keep the light on to read and read and read; playing elaborate imagination games after school with my best friends (house, princesses, orphans, dance coaches, etc). I wrote my first story in my eighth grade English class where one day in the computer lab we were assigned to write a mystery that was at least one page. I loved it. My teacher said it was good...

That summer our family moved - mere days before I started my freshman year of high school - so that fall before I made friend friends, I read a lot and I started writing. I was desperate for the next Harry Potter book to come out, so I started writing my own... the next year I learned about fan fiction on the internet and that it was a thing. I was drawn into Lord of the Rings fanfic, then I wrote a Pirates of the Caribbean fanfic, and then I went back to Harry Potter and actively wrote in that fandom for around six years.

In college I majored in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing because while I was writing fan fiction, I was also occasionally dabbling with original fiction... the dream was to be a famous writer.

Throughout 2023 I started venturing out and participated in A LOT of challenges, which was so much fun in pushing my creative boat out into new waters. In 2024 I plan to DO THE DAMN THING and write a novel. I've always intended to, but 2024 will be the year. ↠ MY WORK Primarily I'm writing MCU fan fiction - typically Bucky Barnes or Steve Rogers; I have written some pieces with Sam, Natasha, Matt Murdock, Namor, and Wanda; I have some ideas for Thor, Carol, and M'Baku that I may or may not get around to. I've written for a slew of Sebastian Stan and Chris Evans characters and that's mostly where my muse lives.

I write a range of fluff, smut, and dark. Nearly all of my work has mature elements whether that's stronger language, sexual situations, or mature themes. Mark Harmon created one of network TV’s most beloved characters on NCIS back in 2003: Leroy Jethro Gibbs. How did he and fellow producers of new prequel series NCIS: Origins cast a younger version of the iconic special agent? 

“I felt the room jump a little when Austin came in, before he said anything,” Harmon tells PEOPLE of Austin Stowell, the actor playing a 1991-era Gibbs in the new spin-off (premiering Monday, Oct. 14). 

After his audition, recalls Harmon, “He walked out and someone said, ‘I'll just say it, that's a movie star.’”

The 73-year-old former Sexiest Man Alive is involved in Origins as well, as both executive producer and narrator — and appears in the premiere episode. It marks Harmon's first reappearance as Gibbs since his departure from NCIS in 2021. 

But the new drama is ultimately led by Stowell, 39, who admits to PEOPLE he’s “never been on a show like this.” It’s what made his casting so crucial. 

“There was heavy competition there,” recalls Harmon of the other actors in contention for the role. “There were a lot of good people. I would say that there were really few who drew the attention Austin did.”

In fact, he adds, “I can say that about any role that was cast in this show, because they all came in one after another. We got everybody we wanted.”

NCIS: Origins follows the beginnings of Gibbs’ career as a special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office, led by NCIS legend Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid, inheriting a role played in the flagship series by Muse Watson). Costarring are Diany Rodriguez as the no-nonsense Vera Strickland (played on NCIS by Roma Maffia), plus Mariel Molino, Tyla Abercrumbie, Bobby Moynihan and more. 

Harmon says casting was just one example of the new series becoming what he and writers Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North envisioned. “So often when you pitch something or talk about something or dream about something, the format by the time you get on air changes a lot,” he says. “Very rarely at the other end of it, does it come out the way you thought. This has come out the way we thought — so far.”

Stowell has nothing but praise for Harmon and his Origins costars and crew. “I like that responsibility,” he says, of leading a show that keeps a team employed in Hollywood. “It gives me great purpose. I don't just go to work for me, I go to work with everyone. It's the opportunity of a lifetime. I love it.”

Plus, he adds, “The fact that I know that there's 300 million [NCIS fans] out there who are waiting to see what this is only makes me fight harder and make me want to fulfill their expectations.”

Meet the collaborators of Israel's Genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank!!!

Egyptian exports to Israel doubled in 2024 compared to the previous year despite Israel’s devastating war on Gaza since October, according to a new report by Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics.

The data published on Thursday showed that Egyptian exports in May 2024 stood at $25m, double that of the same period in 2023.

Despite increasingly fraught relations, energy and security cooperation between the two countries has intensified since October, with Israeli natural gas exports to Egypt sharply increasing in the last year.

Meanwhile, exports from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Israel also increased to $242m in May 2024, compared to $238.5m in May 2023, the report said. Jordanian exports to Israel also continued to rise in 2024, reaching $35.7m in May 2024 compared to $32.3m in the same period last year.

In contrast to Egypt, the UAE and Jordan, Israeli statistics found that Turkish exports to Israel dropped by over half in 2024 compared to the previous year amid the Turkish trade ministry’s restrictions on exports to the country over the war in Gaza.

In May 2023, Turkish exports to Israel amounted to $376.6m, a value that plummeted to $116.8m in May 2024.

Israel’s trade with Egypt grew by 56 percent in 2023 and was up 168 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter, according to the Abraham Accords Peace Institute report.

In 2022, the two countries set a target for annual trade at around $700 million by 2025, up from about $300 million in 2021.

Trade between Turkey and Israel continues through third countries like Greece, despite Ankara’s decision to halt direct trade with Tel Aviv over the Rafah invasion in May, according to data released on Thursday.

Figures from Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) reveal that Israel imported $116m worth of goods from Turkey in May, marking a 69 percent decline from the $377m in the same month last year.

In contrast, the Turkish Exporters’ Assembly (TIM) recorded only $4m worth of goods exported to Israel in May, a drop of over 99 percent compared to the previous year.

However, two Turkish businesspeople facilitating trade between Turkey and Israel informed Middle East Eye that since early May, Turkish goods have been re-routed through Greece and other nearby countries to reach Israel.

This shift follows Ankara’s proclaimed imposition of a total trade ban on Israel until a permanent ceasefire in Gaza is established.

“The Israeli authorities don’t even ask Turkish companies to amend their certificate of origin to re-export the goods through Greece because it would increase the costs further, so they are Turkish products,” one Turkish businessman told MEE.

Businesses favour Greece due to its proximity to Turkey’s industrial base and its comparatively cheaper shipping options to Israel.

TIM data indicate that Turkey’s exports to Greece surged to $375m in May, up 71 percent from $219m in the same month last year.

Israeli data from May doesn’t show an increase in the quantity of imports from Greece, despite the Turkish re-exports. Murat Yapici, the general manager of My Advisor consultancy, told MEE that Israeli records more accurately reflect the bilateral trade since they are based on the origin of the goods, even if they come through third countries like Greece.

The trade volume between the two countries was $6.3bn in 2023, with 76 percent being Turkish exports, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute. Turkey had been a key supplier of affordable products to Israel.

FAA investigating possible close call between Southwest flight and air traffic control tower

The Federal Aviation Administration is looking into a Southwest flight that veered off course while on approach to land at New York's LaGuardia Airport and may have buzzed the air traffic control tower with as little as 67 feet of clearance, CBS News has learned. 

The incident occurred around 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, when pilots of Southwest Flight 147 aborted their first approach because of bad weather. While on final approach of their second landing attempt, an air traffic controller is heard urgently telling the pilots of the Boeing 737 to "go around" and climb to 2,000 feet. 

"Go around! Go around!" Fly runway heading, climb and maintain 2,000. Climb and maintain 2,000. 2,000," the air traffic controller said, according to a feed from liveatc.net.

The plane had apparently drifted to the east and was no longer lined up with the runway. Preliminary flight tracking data from Flightradar24 put the airliner at an altitude of 300 feet when it began to climb. The FAA said it's investigating to see if the off-course airliner flew over the 233-foot tall air traffic control tower. 

Flightradar24's flight tracker map put the plane over the terminal building, not the runway. It appears the plane flew over the parking garage immediately adjacent to the air traffic control tower, based on Flightradar24's approximate track.  

The same controller told the pilots a few minutes later their plane, "was not aligned with the runway at all. It was like east of final. He was not gonna land on the runway."  

The airline said there were 147 passengers and six crew members on board the flight from Nashville. 

Southwest told CBS News the airline is "reviewing the event as part of our Safety systems." The carrier said the plane encountered turbulence and low visibility while approaching LGA. 

Southwest Flight 147 elected to briefly divert to Baltimore/Washington International Airport, where it landed safely. It then eventually landed safely in New York.

Have you seen Criminal Minds? Isn't it generally considered a well-written show? I have friends who are obsessed with it.

The idea that JD suddenly forgot how to write good characters when it comes to TW drives me nuts, because he clearly put thought into the writing for them.

Derek is literally the perfect example of a rape survivor, it is almost eery. Allison's vulnerability to manipulation is so grounded in reality (she's been gaslit and lied to since birth!!!). Scott’s inability to fall in line is because of his trauma around his abusive, alcoholic dad. Stiles is an excellent example of what emotional incest and parentification does to a kid (panic attacks everywhere!!!)

This... is all on purpose. This is intended. All of this??? Is not accidental.

i have watched criminal minds but i think only up till like season 6 or maybe 7. when ever cbs was fucking around with aj cook and paget brewster. so it's been a long time.

truth be told while jeff did create the show he had little involvement with criminal minds. he only co-executive produced and wrote for the first season according to his wikipedia. the show has over 300 episodes and 17 seasons. his involvement is flash in the pan comparative to it's run.

his involvement with teen wolf is much more extensive. he created, was the showrunner, executive produced and wrote 41/100 episodes. not to mention the interviews, the fandom interaction, the appearances at sdcc and the movie. teen wolf is very much his baby.

he bears so much of the brunt of fandom's ire due to him being the face of the show on the production side. while he does receive rightfully deserved criticisms i think we do need to remember jeff was also beholden to mtv and there were multiple writers on the show.

(i really need a teen wolf tell all. we need an e! true hollywood story. someone please drop the deets. holland?? dylan?? i beg of you.)

i think one thing about teen wolf is the characters are fantastic. they're nuanced when one cares to actually look. they have depth and good arcs. it's the snappy, fast paced plots that tend to be the issue. the way that the show rarely dwelled upon things and let the characters breathe and interact with each other.

The ongoing egg shortage in the United States is a clear example of how economic mismanagement and external challenges are impacting everyday Americans. According to CBS News, recent bird flu outbreaks and economic factors have caused shortages, particularly in states requiring eggs from cage-free hens.

These facilities, which house over 40% of the nation’s 300 million egg-laying hens, have been disproportionately affected, with 60% of recent bird flu cases occurring in cage-free farms. Outbreaks have been reported in Utah, Oregon, California, and Washington, per Emily Metz, CEO of the American Egg Board.

Grocery chains such as Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s have reported shortages, while the virus has also driven egg prices higher—a trend expected to continue into 2025. In April, Cal-Maine Foods, the nation’s largest egg producer, had to destroy over 1.9 million chickens in Texas after a bird flu outbreak, further exacerbating the crisis, according to Breitbart News.

Beyond the bird flu, the rising cost of eggs highlights a broader economic struggle under the Biden-Harris administration. Since they took office, egg prices have skyrocketed by 147%. Yet, the White House continues to deny the reality of food inflation.

Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre falsely claimed in June that grocery prices had declined, despite Americans facing the worst food inflation in decades.

As now-Vice President-elect Sen. JD Vance pointed out, “Eggs, when Kamala Harris took office, were short of $1.50 a dozen. Now, a dozen eggs will cost you around $4, thanks to Kamala Harris’ inflationary policies.” These economic pressures are directly tied to the administration’s mismanagement, making it harder for families to afford basic necessities, especially during the holiday season.

The event was emceed by CBS News 60 Minutes’ Correspondent and 2018 Giant Bill Whitaker.

The organization has honored nearly 300 broadcasting leaders since the event's 2003 inception. Net proceeds from the luncheon will support the preservation and expansion of the Library of American Broadcasting collection, which is curated at the University of Maryland.
