Southern California is still on fire and we need your help

Today, it is January 10th, 2025.

In good news, the the Sunset fire is now considered inactive and all evacuations have been reversed. It only grew to 60 acres at it's peak. The Hurst fire has shrunk to over 700 acres and is now 37% contained. The Lidia fire is still at over 300 acres but it is now 75% contained.

Sadly, that is all the good news I have. The Palisades fire has grown to over 20,000 acres with 6% containment. The Eaton fire has grown to over 13,000 acres. To put the sheer size of these fires into perspective, Manhattan has an area of 14,604 acres.

Tragically, 10 people have lost their lives.

At 2:43 PM, a fire known as the Kenneth fire started near the Woodland Hills area. It is 1,000 acres and is 35% contained as of writing. Sadly, this fire appears to have started due to an arson attack. Police currently have the suspect in custody after neighbors performed a citizen's arrest.

This morning, CBS conducted an exclusive interview with LAFD Fire Chief Kristin Crowley where it was revealed that Crowley warned LA Mayor Karen Bass that budget cuts would hamper the LAFD's ability to handle fire emergencies. Crowley confirmed that the city defunded LAFD by $17.6 million, which included a $7 million decrease in overtime pay.

THE EATON FIRE

The Palisades fire has received the most attention from mainstream media after celebrities and high profile Angelenos evacuated the region. Pacific Palisades is considered to be the most sought after real estate in the country as it sits on the Pacific Coast Highway between Santa Monica and Malibu. We now need to shift our attention to the Eaton fire.

The Eaton fire started on Thursday, January 8th, near Altadena Drive and Midwick Drive in the Altadena area. The city primarily affected by this fire is Altadena, home to over 40,000 people and is a mere 4 miles (6 kilometers) away from Pasadena. As of writing, it has burned to over 13,000 acres, has destroyed over 5,000 homes, with 0% containment.

Altadena has a large population of working and middle class families, particularly black families, whose families have lived in the region for generations. During the Great Migration of the 1900s, many black people fled to Altadena to escape the Jim Crow South. Octavia Butler, the world renowned author of Parable of the South, was from Altadena. As these Eaton fire continues to destroy the city, California is losing it's black history.

Do-Not-Drink Water alerts have been issued in Pasadena and Eaton Canyon as the Eaton fire has destroyed and contaminated the water pipes in the region as firefighters continue to fight the fires.

Finally, if you still have a Twitter account, please routinely check the app for Gofundmes from families who have been affected by the fires. Most Gofundmes are not listed on spreadsheets or official websites yet and many families are sharing them on Twitter. Please continue to keep Southern California in your hearts. As the days pass, it has become increasingly clear that the damage being done by these fires is more than we can comprehend. Drone footage shows that Palisades has practically disappeared. It's now being estimated that these fires have done over $50 billion in damages.

Once these fires subside, Los Angeles County will never be the same again. Please continue to support us as we try to heal our wounded home.

Mark Harmon created one of network TV’s most beloved characters on NCIS back in 2003: Leroy Jethro Gibbs. How did he and fellow producers of new prequel series NCIS: Origins cast a younger version of the iconic special agent? 

“I felt the room jump a little when Austin came in, before he said anything,” Harmon tells PEOPLE of Austin Stowell, the actor playing a 1991-era Gibbs in the new spin-off (premiering Monday, Oct. 14). 

After his audition, recalls Harmon, “He walked out and someone said, ‘I'll just say it, that's a movie star.’”

The 73-year-old former Sexiest Man Alive is involved in Origins as well, as both executive producer and narrator — and appears in the premiere episode. It marks Harmon's first reappearance as Gibbs since his departure from NCIS in 2021. 

But the new drama is ultimately led by Stowell, 39, who admits to PEOPLE he’s “never been on a show like this.” It’s what made his casting so crucial. 

“There was heavy competition there,” recalls Harmon of the other actors in contention for the role. “There were a lot of good people. I would say that there were really few who drew the attention Austin did.”

NCIS: Origins follows the beginnings of Gibbs’ career as a special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office, led by NCIS legend Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid, inheriting a role played in the flagship series by Muse Watson). Costarring are Diany Rodriguez as the no-nonsense Vera Strickland (played on NCIS by Roma Maffia), plus Mariel Molino, Tyla Abercrumbie, Bobby Moynihan and more. 

Harmon says casting was just one example of the new series becoming what he and writers Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North envisioned. “So often when you pitch something or talk about something or dream about something, the format by the time you get on air changes a lot,” he says. “Very rarely at the other end of it, does it come out the way you thought. This has come out the way we thought — so far.”

Stowell has nothing but praise for Harmon and his Origins costars and crew. “I like that responsibility,” he says, of leading a show that keeps a team employed in Hollywood. “It gives me great purpose. I don't just go to work for me, I go to work with everyone. It's the opportunity of a lifetime. I love it.”

Plus, he adds, “The fact that I know that there's 300 million [NCIS fans] out there who are waiting to see what this is only makes me fight harder and make me want to fulfill their expectations.”

2024, aber auch 1977 und die Zeit dazwischen

CQ Italia

Frühsommer 1977 in Niederbayern. Ich bin 13 und sitze auf dem Beifahrersitz eines weißen Opel Kadett, der in der Einfahrt unseres Hauses parkt. Auf dem Kofferraum des Autos wippt eine 278 cm lange Antenne und innen hängt unter dem Armaturenbrett ein Funkgerät. Seit zwei Jahren ist CB-Funk in Deutschland freigegeben und mein Papa und ich haben uns begeistert in das neue Hobby gestürzt. Freier Funkbetrieb. Einfach so mit Leuten sprechen, ohne Telefon und über größere Entfernungen. Kostenlos. Neben mit sitzt mein Vater und lauscht ebenso angestrengt wie ich, was da mit kratziger Stimme aus dem Lautsprecher kommt: “CQ undici metri, CQ undici metri, chiamata generale. C’è qualcuno ascoltando? Chiamata generale dall’Italia!” Was meint der? Ich vestand mehr oder weniger nichts, bis auf das letzte Wort: Italia! Da sitzt jemand in Italien, hunderte Kilometer von uns entfernt und wir könnten mit ihm sprechen, einfach so. Könnten, denn die Sache hat einen kleinen Haken. Weder mein Papa noch ich sprechen Italienisch, abgesehen von einer Handvoll Worten, die uns der Patron unseres lokalen Italieners beigebracht hat.

Für alle, die keine Zeit zum Weiterlesen haben: es hat letztlich doch geklappt. Mit einem Spickzettel voller vorgeschriebener Formulierungen und der Tatsache, dass unser Gesprächspartner auf der Gegend von Salurn in Südtirol kam und zweisprachig aufgewachsen war. Ein paar Kilometer weiter südlich und es wäre nur in Italienisch gegangen. 😉

Warum ich jetzt einen Blogpost über ein vor 47 Jahren aktuelles Hobby schreibe? Der CB-Funk war mein erster Kontakt mit einer Gemeinschaft, die nicht nur aus Leuten im Bekanntenkreis und an einem physischen Ort zusammen kam, sondern eine “virtuelle Community”, aus der ganz unvirtuelle echte Freundschaften und Lerngemeinschaften entstanden.

Grund für diesen Blogpost war ein Post von mir in einer anderen virtuellen Gemeinschaft, dem Fediverse:

Angefangen hatte alles mit zwei Handgeräten, dem berühmten HF12 von dnt (der sehr kreativen Abkürzung für “Drahtlose NachrichtenTechnik”). Im Vergleich zu einem heutigen Smartphone ungefähr so handlich wie ein Flugzeugträger im Vergleich zu einer Motoryacht. Ganz nerdig mit einer riesigen Teleskopantenne zum Ausziehen und mit einem halben Watt Sendeleistung auf damals zwölf Kanälen (von denen das HF12 zwei nutzen konnte).

Der Faszination, einfach mit Leuten sprechen zu können, die weit weg von einer Telefonzelle Kilometer entfernt waren tat das keinen Abbruch. Je nach Standort und Bedingungen waren „Kilometer“ 3 oder weit über 300, Kurzwelle ist sowohl faszinierend als auch frustrierend. 😉

Ich habe zusammen mit meinem Vater damals daher Leute aus der näheren Umgebung als auch von weit weg kennen gelernt. Als Identifikation gab es damals ein „Handle“, das Rufzeichen, das man sich selbst aussuchte. Wer sich also heute über die Schwierigkeiten der Namensfindung für den social media-Account beschwert, kann beruhigt sein: das war auch Ende der 70er schon so. 😆 Mein „handle“ damals war übrigens „Mosquito“ (flink und lästig, weil ich dauernd Fragen stellte 😁).

Eine große Gruppe damals stellten die Trucker, wie in den USA damals schon, die damit eine Möglichkeit bekamen, sich auszutauschen, vor Kontrollen und Blitzern zu warnen oder sich auf einem Rastplatz zu verabreden. Für einen Teenager aus der niederbayerischen Provinz tat sich eine ganze Welt auf.

Ich hatte Glück, dass zu der Zeit die Sonne sehr aktiv war (einfach nach Sonnenfleckenmaximum oder Sonnenzyklus im Web suchen!) und größere Reichweiten eher öfter als selten möglich waren. Ein Lerneffekt war auch, dass jede Community ihre eigenen Regeln hat. Da beginnt bei Protokollfragen (es gibt einen Anrufkanal und danach wird für die Unterhaltung auf einen anderen Kanal gewechselt) und „funksozialem“ Verhalten (genau, auch damals gab es schon Trolle und andere Idioten, das ist keine Erfindung des Internets) und geht dann zum Lernen des Jargons der Community. Beim CB-Funk war das eine krude Mischung aus Ankürzungen aus Zeiten der Morsetelegraphie (die heute noch von Funkamateuren und anderen genutzt wird) wie „QTH“ für den Standort, dem amerikanischen „Ten Code“ des Polizeifunks (wie einem „10-4“ für „Verstanden“) und anderen Abkürzungen und idiomatischen Wendungen. Noch etwas Truckerjargon und Sprache der Elektronik-Nerds dazu.

Kleiner Exkurs für alle, die sich fragen, was denn da so schwierig sein soll (das Beispiel ist in Englisch, weil ich diesen Text in mehreren Sprachen veröffentlichen werde):

On the flip-flop from Big A to Shakytown I came by a 10-33. Was a fender bender on the big road, they even had a bear in the air. Some suicide jockey got some gator teeth in his donut and flipped the dry box.

Ja, das ist Englisch, aber der CB-Slang von amerikanischen Truckern, bei denen der freie Bürgerfunk damals das war, was heute WhatsApp-Gruppen für die Teenies sind.

Mein Vater und ich sind damals zu zu CB-Treffen gefahren, wir haben gelernt, verschiedene Antennen und ihre Eigenschaften zu nutzen, Stationen per Kreuzpeilungen, Trigonometrie und Kartenkunde zu orten (es ist erstaunlich, was sich aus einer topographischen Karte alles herauslesen lässt).

Das alles wurde wesentlich interessanter und motivierender als jemals in der Schule möglich dargeboten. Das Faszinierende: “on the air” interessierte sich erstmal niemand dafür, dass Du Teenager bist. Wenn Du Dich anständig benimmst und Interesse zeigst, spielt das Alter und wer Du bist keine Rolle.

Interessanterweise gab es damals schon eine andere Gruppe, die per Funk unterwegs war: die Funkamateure (wer „Amateurfunker“ sagt, outet sich sofort als Aussenseiter 😉). Damals wie heute musste dafür gelernt werden (nicht wenig) und eine aufwändige Prüfung (je nach Lizenzklasse mit oder ohne Morsen) abgelegt werden. Dafür durften die wesentlich mehr Frequenzen nutzen, Antennen und Geräte selbst bauen und mit mehr Sendeleistung unterwegs sein. Aus diesem Grunde gab es sehr oft eine herablassende Haltung gegenüber den CB-Funkern, manche aber waren froh, über den CB-Funk „Nachwuchs“ zu finden.

Noch mehr Neues, noch mehr und weiter entfernte Kommunikationspartner und noch mehr basteln? Ich war sofort Feuer und Flamme. Ein großer Vorteil (den mein damaliger Englisch-Lehrer zu schätzen wusste) war es, dass mir nie jemand erklären musste, warum ich Englisch lernen sollte. Zusätzlich habe ich gelernt, dass es neben der „lingua franca“ der Neuzeit wichtig ist, nicht nur diese und die eigene Muttersprache zu kennen (siehe oben 😉).

Im Herbst 1977 habe ich meinen Vater auf ein Treffen in Konstanz am Bodensee begleitet, auf dem sich CB-Funker, Funkamateure und andere Elektronikbastler trafen. Dieses Wochenende war übrigens der Beginn von allem, denn dort standen die ersten Personal Computer an Messeständen! Aber das ist eine andere Geschichte …

Ich habe dann im Frühjahr 1980 meine Funkamateurlizenz erworben, so richtig mit Kurzwelle, Morsen und selbstgebauten Antennen. Ich bin mit meinem Vater schon ein, zwei Jahre vorher zu den Vereinsabenden des örtlichen Amateurfunk-Clubs gefahren und habe zugehört, dumme Fragen gestellt und gemacht. Anfangs vor allem Fehler. 😏 Seltsamerweise kommt es beim Antennenbau wirklich auf Millimeter an. Kabel an Stecker löten lernst Du nur durch Kabel an Stecker löten. Alles schon damals “multimedial”, über Bücher, über das Tun, direkte Gespräche, Fotos und den Kontakt mit anderen Funkamateuren (zuhören darf man auch ohne Lizenz). Ich durfte als “Greenhorn” jede Menge lernen, hatte aber keine Lehrer, sondern Mentoren, Fragesteller und mit mir Lernende. Ich lernte Schaltpläne lesen, lehrte Betriebstechnik, baute Geräte, erkundete mit anderen Kurzwellen-Funkfernschreiben und hörte Morsezeichen.

Und man hatte die ganze Welt in seinem Kopfhörer! Ich werde nie vergessen, dass eine meiner ersten Runden ein Farmer in Texas, ein Apfelbauer in der Ukraine, ein Arzt in Schweden und ich waren, die sich auf Kurzwelle mehr oder weniger regelmäßig trafen. Jetzt hatte man auch ein offiziell zugeteiltes Rufzeichen, das weltweit eindeutig ist (falls irgendein OM mitliest, vy 73 de DL2RBZ 😎). Auch hier war eine neue Community, mit wieder neuen und eigenen Regeln, Jargon und sozialem Verhalten.

Wie auch später (mit Computern, dann Mailbox-Netzen, dann dem Internet, dann den sozialen Medien) hilft es, sich mit den Dynamiken solcher virtueller Gemeinschaften zu beschäftigen und bestimmte Dinge „vererben“ sich, da Leute im Laufe ihres Lebens auch diese Communities durchwanderten. Jede solche Gemeinschaft besitzt einen Lebenszyklus und eigene Entwicklungsphasen. Und seltsamerweise scheint beispielsweise die 90/9/1-Regel eine solche universelle Konstante zu sein (die sicher auch jede und jeder mit ehrenamtlichem Engagement kennt). 90% der Leute konsumieren (oder „lurken“), das ist keine Wertung, sondern ein völlig valides Verhalten, etwa 9% der Leute sind sehr aktiv engagiert und 1% geht wirklich in diesem Feld auf und ackert, produziert Inhalte, organisiert, kümmert sich und so weiter.

Ich habe übrigens sowohl das CB-Funkgerät als auch ein paar meiner Amateurfunk-Kisten noch zuhause im Keller. Beim Schreiben dieses Artikels habe ich festgestellt, dass beim Morsen nur noch etwa die Hälfte des Alphabets vorhanden ist und hier etwas Arbeit für den Winter wartet. Schließlich gilt immer noch, dass, wenn alles andere versagt, Morsecode per Funk immer noch durchkommt, auch im 21. Jahrhundert. Kein Internet, keine Mobilfunkmasten, keine Router, alles was man braucht, ist ein genügend langer Draht, Strom mit 12 Volt und etwas Kleinkram. 😉 Hoffen wir, dass wir das nicht so schnell brauchen.

DOGE Executes Mass Firings at U.S. Institute of Peace: ‘Failed to Deliver Peace’

Mass firings took place at the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) on Friday, several sources familiar with the matter told CBS News. 

The employees were terminated effective immediately as part of the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) whole-of-government effort to slash wasteful spending. USIP employees told The Washington Post that between 200 and 300 people had been fired, which is nearly all of the institute’s headquarters staff. 

The reported firings come after President Donald Trump signed an executive order in February aimed at dismantling the USIP, which is a congressionally funded organization. The Trump administration has been working to freeze the organization’s funding and replace its board.

USIP was created by Congress in 1984 under former President Ronald Reagan and was formally established as “an independent, nonprofit corporation,” according to CBS News. The USIP has a $55 million budget and a purported mission to promote conflict resolution and prevent conflict across the globe.

“Taxpayers don’t want to spend $50 million per year on a publicly-funded ‘research institute’ that has failed to deliver peace,” White House press deputy secretary Anna Kelly told the outlet on Saturday.

“President Trump ended the era of forever wars and established peace in his first term, and he is carrying out his mandate to eliminate bloat and save taxpayer dollars,” Kelly continued. 

Fired employees were notified of their termination by email for a USIP email address, according to the report.

“Dear [Employee], this letter is to inform you of a change in your employment status with United State Institute of Peace (sic),” a copy of an email obtained by the outlet reads. “Effective March 28, 2025, your employment with us will conclude.”
