My Kastle Scene Wishlist

I’m not sure what Kastle content we might get in Daredevil Born Again, but there is also talk that they might make a new Punisher show. What are some scenes/parallels that you would like to see between Frank and Karen? Here’s a few of my musings

Reversed Hospital Scene! I would like to see Frank momentarily panic over Karen getting hurt and have a turn holding her hand in a hospital bed. I feel like we deserve this scene so bad. (Caveat: Frank CANNOT be the reason Karen got injured, even if it’s just she got shot in the arm or has a concussion; Karen is in dangerous situations regardless of Frank being near her or not and he needs a wake up call for that). Bonus points for the total opposite of telling her to walk way—this time HE GETS IN THE HOSPITAL BED and puts his arms around her and just holds her and Karen gets to feel completely safe for a few minutes. Just go all out with the hurt/comfort trope for these two. Anyway, I have a whole WIP fic devoted to this, so honestly it has become my top wish to see some parallels drawn with another hospital scene.

Karen gets to help in a fight and shoots someone. I feel like since they never got to have the Wesley conversation, a way to show-not-tell would be for Karen to kill a bad guy and then Frank come check on her to be like, ‘hey are you okay?’and she’d be like, ‘yeah, I am.’ She’d be a bit shaken up but grimly holding it together because it’s not her first time killing someone. This would also work in contrast to the scene where Amy shoots the guy in the hall and then Frank infamously takes the gun from her and takes the responsibility of his death away from her. Sorry to make Karen suffer because I know she’ll feel bad about it, but I’d be okay with seeing her character go a little bit darker to save someone’s life. She’s been carrying that gun since DDs2, she deserves to take out a baddie on her own and it’d be a great segue into rehashing some of her past that Frank NEEDS to know about

Frank meets Paxton Page. Will the show make time for this? Probably not. But damn do I want to know what Frank would say if he knew that Karen’s dad cut off his only daughter, when Frank would do anything—anything—to spend one minute with Lisa again. I’d love to see Frank go to Fagan Corners with Karen to put flowers on her mom and brother’s graves. We spent three seasons of Frank being able to open up around Karen and talk about his family with her. Meanwhile she has never once said anything about the losses she’s suffered. Frank needs to know and I don’t want it all jammed into one big backstory dump where she tells him she killed her brother and Wesley in the same conversation. Another option would be for Frank to accidentally visit Karen on the anniversary of her mom/Kevin’s death and she is having a breakdown. If we can’t get into any of Karen’s past, have Frank find out Karen has his burner phone saved in her contacts listed as Home. I’ve seen that idea in several different fics and it just needs to be canon. They are Home to each other.

A scene where Frank holds Karen all night and they don’t have sex, but it’s profound. (Think like Spike holding Buffy). If they are nervous about comics fans being mad about Frank Castle finding love again, give us some physical intimacy and closeness where you know they mean everything to each other but can’t cross the line and make things real. Fan fic writers will know we won and then fill in the rest for those cowards.

If they’re willing to make Kastle real, give us a goddamn kiss. Actually, just let them have sex, because Karen Page has been forced to stay chaste for YEARS and she deserves to get laid. And Jon Bernthal seems to be more than comfortable doing sex scenes soooo please just make it the most beautiful thing ever filmed because they are so in love with each other. It has to be noticeably different in tone from the scene with Beth. And Karen cannot get shot the next day, don’t even start with any of that bull$hit trauma for Frank.

Kastle pillow talk scene. Since it’s Disney Marvel now, I don’t know how much we can hope for with a sex scene. So the pillow talk scene that follows had better be some life-altering confessions of love and cuddles. Do not even think about him sneaking out before she wakes up like he almost did with Beth. Karen deserves something good to happen to her for once, let her have a perfect night and a gentle, soft morning after. She deserves it even if Frank isn’t sure if he does.

Karen Page and Dinah Madani Friendship. I’m rewatching The Punisher s2 and one thing that pissed me off was the scenes of fake bonding between Dinah and Krista Dumont, drinking wine together and discussing men (Frank and Billy, who else). So. To make up for that, we need some genuine female friendships, like Karen and Dinah going to a shooting range together or gym or going out to a nice bar for girls night. Even if Frank has been keeping his distance, these ladies have struck up a friendship and Karen has someone to hang out with besides her lawyer coworkers.

Karen gets to meet Micro/The Lieberman family AND Curtis. David knows how Frank really feels about Karen. Curtis needs to find out Frank DOES still have something good holding him in this world. And Karen should meet Frank’s friends.

Okay those are some of the scenes I want to see for Frank and Karen! If someone could please get this list to the Punisher writers for the future of the show, it’s actually very important that we get some of this or I’m gonna have to come write for the show myself. 🙈

“What happened” was a broom accident that ruined everything. If it hadn’t been for that broom accident, she’d be flying instead of taking tea and talking. She’d be sneaking out between classes and she’d… … she’d lift up above the ground and all her problems would be way down there in a teeny-tiny somewhere. And she’d barrel down the pitch, building speed as she swooped and swerved to finally hurl her Quaffle - the left hoop would be Salazar Slytherin with his stupid secret chamber and the right hoop would be his supersized sidekick snake and right in the center hoop would float Tom Riddle’s stupid smug face and she’d spend all year slamming Quaffle after Quaffle after Quaffle at all three of them, until she could no longer picture that trio without bloody noses and blacked eyes. But there had been a broom accident. So now she was stuck on the ground staring at runes and fading her freckles and pretending stick figures were art and slurping stupid-arse tea.

You’re trying to convince a friend to get into your current fandom(s) with you. what episode, clip, or scene are you showing them?: I am not showing ANYONE Halo, unless you come to me saying you want to watch it. And then I’m going to give you a bunch of caveats about how I’m obsessed with it but it’s really not that great except for when it is and you shouldn’t take it too seriously. Buckle up and grab your adult beverage of choice.

For game-verse Halo I’d show Johnson’s speech about the tank in Halo 2 because that’s what Mr showed me to rope me in.

Mandalorian, the first episode.

Babylon 5, I would start with the pilot movie if I could find it and then not let up until you’d watched five seasons of emotional roller coaster. I’d tell you what JMS said in the commentaries for Shattered Dreams and Sleeping in Light and Deconstruction of Falling Stars and how many of the actors died too young. After War Without End I would show you the video where JMS drops the bomb about why Michael O’Hare left the show. By the end of it you’d love the show but you might not love me anymore. 🤣

And finally, what does fandom mean to you?: A place where I can explore the highs and lows of the human experience in a safe environment. Sometimes I can put a little broken piece of myself into a fanfic or headcanon and not feel so broken anymore. I can “talk” about things in fiction that I can’t in real life.

A place where I can meet cool people whose paths I never would have crossed had we not been abnormal about a certain show or character. ❤️

Michael thinks it's funny, cute even, and teases Luke relentlessly. But the couple Luke's trying to date now is actually really nice, and that's fine; Luke deserves the best, right? Then why does Michael wish they'd dump Luke?

Summary: Luke’s boyfriend touched him all the time, but it didn’t feel right anymore. It made Luke’s skin crawl, which was fucked up, because he used to love being touched. In hindsight, it was probably his body trying to tell his brain something wasn’t right with his relationship. At the time, he just thought there was something wrong with him.

Regardless of the reason, the strength of the urge to smother Calum against his chest took him aback, because he hadn’t felt anything like that in so long. And he kinda liked it, which really scared him.

Summary: Luke’s family finally bought a lake cabin like Luke had always dreamed they would have. He’s always been jealous of schoolmates that would always spend their summers there and brag. All fic requests are for entirely new fics, no continuing on preexisting WIPs (except for adding onto a series that is explicitly set in the same universe, such as the TMA/BNHA crossover brainrot <3 universe, the todofam-plus-izuku's adventures in vigilantism universe, or The Phantom of Shinomori Prefecture universe. Additionally, I'm also open to anything that would fit into the afohiko peddling series or the in which tim stoker is entity catnip series). If you want me to work on my multichapter WIPs because I have so many of those and never update any of them, I also have an option to Sponsor a WIP!

My rate is $10 per chapter for any requests sent! The first chapter will be roughly 2k words at a minimum, any later chapters will be a minimum/rough estimate of 1k. The fandoms I will write for are listed (alphabetically) below the cut, as well as what kind of prompts I will or will not write:

What I will write:

Crossovers! Any crossover between any of the fandoms listed below. I'll also do a crossover with Tokyo Ghoul on request (just not a Tokyo Ghoul fic, like, on its own. I am not caught up on anything and quite frankly I straight up don't remember who anybody is)

Gore, horror, etc. Get freaky with it, I don't care

Angst, happy ending or no. Please specify what kind of ending you want if you're asking for angst/gore/horror because I WILL go scorched-earth bad ending if left unsupervised

(Most) Ship content! My three exceptions to this are: no adult/minor, no incest, and no Endehawks specifically (my NOTP). I won't write those, but anything else is fair game!

Major character death. I will kill whoever you want me to, boss

Various AUs. The exceptions are below but most of them are cool

Pretty much anything I've written in previous fics? Crack, fluff, whatever. If it's angst you want I'm your guy, but I'm not too bad at the other stuff too

OC content, Reader-insert, sure. I can't promise it'll be good, since I'm super out of practice doing anything of the sort, but I'll do it! Make sure to send in any specifics on how you want the reader to act, reader characteristics, etc. If you have an OC you want me to write, please give me a good description- I may ask for clarification or elaboration as necessary!

What I will not write:

Sexual content. Best I can do is a couple of jokes and a fade-to-black makeout session

Fantasy AUs. Not my thing, I rarely read them and I don't write them

Those exceptions to the "ship content" bullet point above, not writing them

Rape/dubious consent/sexual violence. It falls under sexual content, technically, but it's possible to allude to the thing without actually depicting it. I am neither alluding to nor depicting it

Six Sentence Sunday

New Dathomir AU below the cut. Feral's chapter's done, so I've started poking at Savage's just to get a sense of what his motivations look like. Three or four other WIPs on rotation until the end of the month, at which point I'm going to crawl back into Crown of Horns (which my husband is now calling Crown of Hornies 😩) and you probably won't see me until the spring.

Probably.

Caveats: I sort of suspect that this is only relevant for maybe two people who are tracking my work at this point, but you don't get the Fandom Cryptid badge without mysteriously disappearing for months at a time to work on something obscure that will only appeal the smallest sliver of a virtually non-existent readership. I love those two people, though. Y'all keep me from deleting.

Three Princes / Pt. II - The Shadow Hand (Savage x Reader)

Caveat: this is how many I've posted, I've written way more but I ain't doing that math right now. I only went as far as calculating how many words carried over from 2020 and subtracted them from my statistical total. So this includes the tail ends of Twist, The Cutting Room Floor, A Wolf Named Vengeance and Just Like Fire, but not the wordcount of each from last year.

New Things I Tried: Deliberate epic-ness. I set out to write What a Wicked Game to Play as fully fleshed out as possible. Twist being over 150K words was kinda accidental. I'm curious to see just how long I can string WG out without losing the plot entirely.

Fic I Spent the Most Time On: WG, for sure. I started it initially in January, put it down for a couple months, had Imogen spring fully formed from my head like a thunderbolt, then by April I had started writing it again and I'm still working on it now. No end in sight.

Fic I Spent the Least Time On: Tossup between several oneshots that were all written, edited, beta'd and posted on the same day. The winner, however, is probably Could You Get Any Louder?, a tumblr prompt that I wrote in the ask box reply then polished up and posted to AO3 as well. Incidentally, this is also the last thing I wrote for Mass Effect, the rest of my work this year being for DA:I.

Favorite Thing I Wrote: *snorts in poly* I don't play favorites, but there are some standouts. WG, obviously. I love Imogen with my whole heart and soul. But also: Hope Is a Fragile Thing, where I successfully wrote the whole fic before posting a single word of it. No More My Heart Beats Without You, an attempt to write something heartshatteringly tragic. And Of Ruins and Restoration, a surprise that slid in and out of my head just three days ago. It has promise to turn into a whole new fic (and pairing) for me.

Favorite Thing I Read: Again, favorites aren't a thing with me. But if we go by fics I binged to catch up on, followed from the start or went back to time and again, I have a list.

Indavisable, by Elvesinmyheart, Pikapeppa. The Ancient Elvhen Boyband and the fantastic women who love them. With art, both in and of the fic. *chef's kiss*

Dead Pasts and Dread Futures, by youworeblue. I was scared of it at first. A fix-it/do over that starts with death isn't usually my cup of tea. I have never been more wrong. This fic led me to a new friendship, joining a new discord server and ultimately becoming a better writer myself.

Coiling Time, by Enceladus(EspressoComfort). TTMCIT, that's Time Traveling Modern Character In Thedas. The concept hooked me from the start, the writing kept me coming back for more.

Sunday, Domestic, by JessaLRynn. (This one is locked, so you have to be signed in to AO3 to see it) Did you know that I have a soft spot for the Ninth Doctor? Well, you do now. The characterization of him and Rose is so good in this I think I've read it nearly a dozen times.

I'll Still Destroy You, by Yours_Truly_Commander_Shepard. It's dark, it's tragic, it's powerful. I've read it and reread it more than I should admit to. Sometimes you just need words that hurt your heart.

The Taming of Fen'Harel, by beaubashley. And sometimes you just need a feel-good, happy ending road trip with your favorite eldritch trickster god. Even if (when?) he's an idiot.

Probably goes without saying that these are all rated E, because I am shameless about loving smutty fics.

Writing Goals For Next Year: Keep going on WG. Write the rest of R&R and a couple other WIP's I have stashed on the back burner. Hopefully get to have my shot at being my bestie's beta.

Considerations... (8/26/2021)

Greetings everyone! This post is meant to summarize everything that’s been going through my head in regards to my content creation/curation recently. This will be a long post, so I’ll put most of this under the cut!

Starting with my Youtube content, I’m thinking about doing some quicker, lower effort videos to make the gap(s) between videos less than a month long. Of the ideas that adhere to that quicker model, I I have three that include... - Idea Blurbs Summarized: A series in which I read off the ideas I keep in my Idea Blurbs Doc, going one month at a time in terms of release. - Hero Makers: A series where I (and possibly some friends) make original characters from a prompt/concept. - Sorta Dumb Summaries: A series where I attempt to humorously summarize X thing, whether that be a story, event, or friend interaction. Another thought I had was getting a standalone camera for live action filming, though it’s on the the bench for the fact that my phone works mostly fine for video production.

I really don’t know what to do with my Twitter besides liking cool art and occasionally sharing some shorter thoughts of mine.

In regards for this platform, I’ve been thinking about making monthly posts that contain all of the art I made within said month. They will likely be released on the final day of each month so long as I remember and am not caught up in some other time sink. On top of that, I’m still workshopping what will be the next digitally written story that will hit the airwaves on this platform, so maybe I should do a poll for that.

As for the possibly exciting bit, I’m considering opening up commissions for more than just my own gain! My mantra has always been that I enjoy being of assistance when it comes to most things, including visual assets. Once again, I’m not too experienced with commissions due to the fact that my only commissioners have been people I know in person, but I’m willing to start work on setting up a commissions sheet with some caveats. Those caveats include... - I will not take more than what the listed price is unless there is more than one item. - I will gladly utilize reference images if provided. - I will do animated commissions at a higher price than non-moving art. - I will send the WIP versions of the commissioned item when prompted. This commission sheet will be included in the coming update of my FAQ post once it comes to fruition.

Tfw you realize you can only write One Thing

Hello, fronds! As I posted yesterday, my exchange fic for the marvelous Jaime x Brienne Fic Exchange 2020 was Never Know How Much I Care. When I was writing it, I didn’t take many pains to disguise my authorial voice (both because I didn’t really know how or want to, and because I thought there would be too much hubbub about well-known authors for people to scrutinize my particular offerings too much and guess correctly). However even with this caveat, upon rereading my previous fics I was surprised by how many similarities there were between them and my newest work. They even map fairly well onto its three main chapters. Apparently my well of writerly tricks is… shallow. 

In an effort to make lemonade out of these very embarrassing lemons, I have decided to describe the fic I wrote for the exchange in ways that may resonate with any fans of my previous works. So! If you like anything I’ve written before, here are some reasons you might like this newest one. Do you like:

Good news! Never Know How Much I Care also has a relationship with a combative beginning and unresolved sexual tension, in addition to banter, canon elements mentioned in a modern AU setting, and a Jaime who swears like a sailor. Plus—bonus!—Never Know How Much I Care is a multi-chapter fic too, but it’s finished (AIFtHOF is not abandoned but it is still a WIP in its early stages). 

A Little Less Conversation, A Little More Action Please? 

Well, Never Know How Much I Care also has a long, tense, conversation in which an antagonist blathers on with the everpresent threat of a Jaime-administered smackdown lurking in the background, as well as Jaime having Feelings about some information that he learns.

At Least Out Loud, I Won’t Say I’m In?

Hoo boy. If this post-smut oneshot were written by someone else I would be guilty of plagiarism (at the very least, plagiarism of Vibes). So! If you like cheerfully cocky and thirsty Jaime who is both soft and Loud, awkward tentative cinnamon roll Brienne POV, angsty obliviousness, and banter, they all make a reappearance in Never Know How Much I Care. And if you’re someone that liked this older work but wished I hadn’t wussed out in writing the smut that happened immediately before it… well. That should not a concern with the newest fic. Ahem. (I do still have some prequels/sequels to ALOLIWSII in the works, including its own smut)

Note: Almost all of these stories are at least nine years old, and there’s a reason for that. For quite a while there, a lot of people in the fannish circles I was involved in were REALLY anti-WIP. They would not read WIPs. At all. So I got into the habit of writing a story and then posting it in one go. Since about 2011 I’ve been involved in fandoms where WIPs were a much more accepted thing, so my one-shots have been a lot shorter than they used to be.

Set on Earth, post-series. John and Rodney are living in a house in the woods together and have fallen into a relationship. Then one day John comes home to find Sam Carter waiting at the front door.

This was the final SGA story I wrote, and I think it might just be the best. I got closer to nailing John Sheppard in this than in anything else I wrote for him, anyway. He will always feel elusive, and that’s probably part of why I’ll never love any character more than I loved him.

Ah, Elizabeth POV! I love bystander POV, and this was one of the more complicated bystander stories I’ve written. The title is sort of ironic, and sort of not.

"You really do look younger than you did before, you know," Rodney says.

John laughs, or snorts or something. Whatever you call it, it's some sort of noise that doesn't have a whole lot of humour in it. "I suppose you could say that the Wraith made me feel younger, too. In a manner of speaking."

This was an episode tag for 'Common Ground'. It won’t make a whole heap of sense unless you’ve seen that episode. It’s the episode where John gets captured by the Genii and aged into an old man after being drained by the captive wraith (who later becomes his ‘friend’, Todd). 

It’s probably still a bit confusing to read, particularly without having the episode fresh in mind, so I’ll just say that in the first part the short bits in italics are what’s actually happening - the wraith draining John of his life force - and each scene in between is a flashback, going further back in time each time as John loses more of his life.

Yes, it’s a very cheery story! Or the first part is, anyway. The second part is set after his rescue, and makes up for all the angst in the first part - I hope! Ultimately, it’s a story about coming to terms with a lot of things, including sexuality, but not only that.

Her Rightful Place | Words: 15,498 | The Devil Wears Prada | 2008 |  Comments: 18 | Kudos: 174 | Bookmarks: 31    Emily discovers that it's best to be careful what you wish for because you might just get it. 

This is my one and only Devil Wears Prada story, which I wrote for Yuletide 2008. It’s Emily POV, because that’s what the recipient asked for, and I had an absolute blast writing her. She’s a wonderfully deluded and vain character, but I couldn’t help feeling for her, too. This is another bystander POV story, though Emily doesn’t realise she’s a bystander until very near the end.

Fun fact: my main activity in DWP fandom was to beta for @telanu. Telanu’s other DWP beta reader was The Last Good Name. So imagine my surprise when I got my assignment for Yuletide and discovered that my recipient was The Last Good Name. Then things got even weirder when The Last Good Name emailed me - because she’d been assigned Telanu as her recipient in the DWP holiday fic exchange and wanted to check with me about story elements that Telanu would like.

I was the keeper of the secrets that year! There was a lot of laughing that I couldn’t share, and then more shared laughing when reveals finally happened.

This is an odd story for me. It’s the only time I’ve ever written in another fanwriter’s sandbox. The main character in this story is one of Telanu’s OCs, (Judi Dench) M’s granddaughter, Sophie. 

All I can really say about it is: read Telanu’s Bond/M Sharing the Road series, and after that if for some reason you still need more, maybe try this.

Snapshot Sunday 8/4/19

Wow it’s been a hot minute huh? Sorry about that, the last few months got away from me a bit. Reading recs first, everything else under the cut. (ETA: Corrected the name of one of the books because I got my wires crossed, herp de derp.)

Reading: I’m not going to list everything I’ve read since my last post, cuz there’s been, uh, a lot. Most recently I’ve read the two most recent Wayward Children books (Beneath the Sugar Sky and In An Absent Dream), which I utterly love; the first and second book of the Louisiana Longshot series, which I enjoyed with caveats; and re-read Thrawn (2017) and started on Thrawn: Alliances. Hopefully I’ll be able to start Thrawn: Treason this week and then dive into more of my TBR pile; I don’t mind re-reads but it stresses me out to feel like I’m not “making progress”, especially when books I’ve preordered start arriving. (Which was the impetus for the re-reads in the first place; Treason just came out, but it’s been a while since I read the other two.) At some point I need to start getting reviews into Goodreads, but that’s pretty far down the priority list.

Knitting: Started on the dark green socks after four bloody attempts to find a pattern that would work. I’m currently using the Intermingle pattern from knitty.com, which is a nice balance between cables and stockinette for stretch. Fingers crossed this one does the trick. I’m also chipping away at the hexipuffs and 10-stitch blanket, two of my longest-running WIPs.

Spinning: HEY I FINALLY FINISHED THE MERINO/DOG FUR. Pictures sometime later this week. I also started giving my Greensleeves Teacup a test drive to see how fine I can spin on it with some merino roving I had socked away; the answer, apparently, is “pretty dang fine”. I also may have picked up a few more Turks. And have a couple of tahklis on the way. Oops. Cataloging and updating my fiber stash is at the top of my to-do list this month, because my Ravelry stash page is mostly useless and that’s just not acceptable.

Writing: I... think I noodled around on a fic earlier this week? Otherwise, um, I really fell off the wagon here, and it’s kind of driving me bonkers. Gonna work on that this month.

Exercise: ...see above, sigh. Gotta work on that. Goal for this week: use my mini stepper every morning.

Adulting: My apartment is in REALLY good condition now, I’m not gonna lie, and I’m pleased as punch. I’ve got almost all my art up on the walls, and I’m finally getting some shelves up too to get my tchotchkes more spread out rather than crowded on part of a bookshelf. I purged the hell out of my pantry, got some Command hooks up for my kitchen utensils, and got a rolling three-shelf cart from Michaels for my laundry closet. (It’s TARDIS blue, I love it.)

Related, my family FINALLY came to visit me (after 5.5 years but who’s counting), and I got to show them my apartment, and they loved how I have the place set up, and I’m very, very happy. I know I don’t need their approval, but I’m proud of how I have things organized and decorated and the furniture and other pieces I have that have a lot of character, so it makes me happy to get compliments on it.

Next on the life list is... probably getting caught up on medical appointments. Ugh. I know it’s necessary, I know my anxiety about it is more than a little ridiculous and it won’t be that bad and I need to just suck it up, but uuuuuugh, we hates it precious. *whiiiiiine*

CULT WIP Hi there~! So I'm working on a cult WIP and I know a common way to control people in a cult is sleep deprivation. I've looked through your sleep related tags and the cult one, but right now I'm wondering about the long con of sleep deprivation. My idea is that to keep people controlled they get less sleep than they should (your posts have made me up it from three hours per night to five per night) and the higher ups in the cult are allowed the full amount of sleep they need; (1/2)

CULT WIP (2/3) that way they operate better than others. I've jotted down a bunch of effects you've brought up but here's the thing. What if that sleep deprivation lasts forever? Like it's just a normal part of life once you hit adulthood? (I don't think kids could withstand it so I figured just not to do it). I know the Heaven's Gate cult used a lot of sleep deprivation and they lasted for ~three years so there must be some way to/balance to keep people functional, I just can't think of how.CULT WIP (3/3) Not actually part of the question but I just wanted to say THANK YOU for this blog!! I’mgoing to go into this one with the caveat that so far as I know, noone has done this experiment. There isn’t a studied group of peoplewho have been restricted (or restricted themselves) to five hours ofsleep a night every day for their entire adult life. There are peoplewho’ve done this for a number of years and people who do this 5-6nights a week and then sleep more on the weekend for decades at atime. Now all three situations are bad for someone, but a thoroughstatistical analysis on a decent sample size might show differencesbetween them.

Sopart of this is what we know happens to the first two groups and partof it is extrapolating based on that.

Thefirst thing we knowhappens (based on the two studied groups) is a shorter, unhealthierlife.

Ihesitate to put a figure on how much shorter because it seems to varyquite a bit between individuals and I don’t know of any statisticalstudies that have put a number on it. But I think you can safely takeat least ten years off every character’s life expectancy based onthis alone.

Therates of a lotof different diseases and conditions increase. Cancer rates rise, formultiple forms of cancer. Rates of strokes and heart attacks rise.Dementia rates rise.

Nowall of those conditions are usually diseases of age. You canhave a heart attack or a cancer diagnosis as a young person, but thechances of it happening are much more likely after you hit about40-50.Lack of sleep doesn’t seem to effect the age these conditionsmanifest. It doeseffect the chances of them happening in vulnerable ages though.

Essentiallyif you take a group of 40-50 year old non-cultists from your valleysetting (I hope you don’t mind me looking at your blog? Lovelypictures by the way) less of them will have or have had cancer,strokes, heart attacks and early signs of dementia. As the populationages further the gap will become starker. Less of the cultists willsurvive to their 70-80s and those that do will be less healthy thenthe non-cultists.

Diabetesrates also increase with lack of sleep. This doesn’t appear to beage related. It is however unclear whether it’s because of theeffect lack of sleep has on the immune system or because of theeffect it has on our appetites. People who sleep less eat more andtheir bodies drive them towards more high fat and high sugar foods.

Idon’t understand the link between weight and diabetes very well, soI’m not going to talk about it in any depth. The general point I’mdriving at is that if your cult tightly controls diet that mightcounteract the rise in predisposition to diabetes. But the data isn’tentirely clear on that point.

There’salso a general rise in illness and infections. That contributes todecreased life expectancy but also means more sick days. Less timewhen any one individual can productively work.

Partof what this is gearing towards is this: I’m not sure it would bepossible to consistently keep someone on five hours sleep a nightonly for their entire life without a huge death rate.

It’sthe illnesses. I think if cult members were denied sleep while sick(especially if they’re also forced to work or their diet iscontrolled) then- well I think there’d be a lot more people dyingfrom common, preventable illnesses. Not instantly. Not within thefirst decade. But in the longer term or thirty or so years.

Onthe other hand if the cultists who are ill aregetting enough sleep then you don’t strictly have five hours sleepa night for the rest of their lives. What you’ve got instead issomething more like ‘five hours sleep a night until you reachphysical collapse, then you can rest’.

That’sextremely unhealthy, painful and harmful. But it’s less likely tokill so many people so quickly.

Partof the issue is how ‘functional’ the characters need to be. Atfive hours, it would be dangerous to drive or operate other heavymachinery. Accidents would be more likely. Mistakes would be morelikely.

Butthat doesn’t mean these characters couldn’t do most of the day today tasks required to keep a small community going.

It’snot that the cooking couldn’t get done, it’s that the chances ofdropping a pan full of boiling water on someone’s foot is a lothigher. Less that complex tasks can’t get done and more that they’dtake longer, be completed less well, less effectively and there’dbe a higher chance of accidents on the way.

Incidentallyif a big part of this story is the standard tactic of elite membersof the group making other members feel less confident in themselves-usethis effect of sleep deprivation to help accomplish that.Because people who are sleep deprived thinkthey are physically and mentally capable of more than they are.

Youcan sit them down and say ‘Listen S, the low amount of work you’vegotten through this month is unacceptable. We agreed that you couldfinish this project in a week and it’s taken two. You’re just nottrying hard enough’

Andtheywill agree.Because they don’t know how impaired they are. It’sone of the stranger effects that consistently shows up in testing andI feel like it’s very relevant here.

Theincrease in workplace accidents is also affected by the decrease inimmune function. Accidents are more likely andrecovery from them takes longer.

Theother thing that stands out to me is the effect this would have onthe living environment generally.

Sleepdeprived people are emotionally volatile. They also tend towardsbeing distrustful of others and paranoia. Again this isn’tsomething they necessarily recognise.

Whichmakes for a pretty horrendous environment when you think about alarge group of people living in fairly close quarters andunable to really avoid each other.

Thinkabout how this meshes with the rise in accidents, forgetfulness andgeneral tiredness that go along with sleep deprivation and you’llsee what I mean. Someone drops the hot pan and it just misses someoneelse’s foot- was it deliberate? Someone forgets where they putsomething- obviously it was stolen. There was a stray shoe left outin the hall and a character almost tripped over it- clearly whoeverleft it there knew thatcharacter could/would trip.

Andso forth.

Fromthe point of view of your cult leaders this sort of misery andemotional upheaval is a positive. It makes it harder for people toorganise or relate in an authentic way to each other in the longterm. It couldmake it especially hard for parents and children to keep up apositive relationship, comparedto the relationship the children could have with the cult leaders.

Becausethe parents will always be too tired, too grumpy, too unpredictable,to relate well to a young child. Whereas the well rested cult leaderscould appear calmer, kinder andseem to have more time.

There’svariation within all of this obviously. Despite damagingcircumstances some people do live to a ripe old age and don’tdevelop cancer more than ‘normal’ people would (chemistryprofessors over 80 are an interesting breed). Some people may stillbe able to show some patience and kindness despite the effects sleepdeprivation has on emotional regulation.

Moneyand treatment can also extend the life of someone who is routinelysleep deprived and suffers from multiple health problems as a result.

Ifyou’ve read my previous posts then I think you’ll have an idea ofindividual symptoms and how they get progressively worse. A lot ofthis ask was me- not just trying to map out what the indefinite timeframe you have would look like but the effect it would have on agroup and the relationships within that group.

There will be some mild spoilers, but nothing you couldn’t figure out on your own, imo. So often when I read a modern AU, it can be difficult to capture the sense of engagement and charisma, the addicting drama necessary to keep me interested while still not feeling too forced, that instead it has a natural flow to the plot and the pacing. But this fic does that beautifully–where it ends up is exactly where it felt like it was going since the very first chapter, that the author had a plan and maybe it expanded or swerved a few times, but that the base foundation of the story was always headed exactly right here. And that made the experience of reading this fic all the more satisfying, so that when terrible things happened, I could enjoy the emotional impact of them, but I had absolute trust that I knew what I was getting when I walked into this story–and that never makes it boring, it’s the journey there just as much as it is the destination. And that means an AU where Obi-Wan and Anakin are in a modern setting, but the spirit of them is mapped onto this universe so well, that Anakin’s issues are that he falls in love so fast and sohard, that he explodes when he doesn’t know what to do, that he gives everything of himself. That Obi-Wan is reserved, but still waters that run deep, that he loves so genuinely and struggles to do what’s best for Anakin, precisely because he cares for him so much.   But it’s also the setting of the piece, which is the world of ballet dancers and choreographers, that is so lovely and there’s such a satisfying dance in the final chapter, that it’s all happy emotion and passion, that these two people have spent almost a novel’s worth of time working through their relationship’s ups and downs, to end on this note that’s perfect for them. That the resolution of it is exactly in the spirit of the original canon, their choices are ones that I felt their characters would make, ported over to this modern version of themselves. It’s not that the fic is without angst, because there is, even in the final chapter, a lot of difficult situations to work through, but ones that are natural to the characters, ones they would struggle with, that these choices and complications they’re faced with are ones they would have to navigate with some trouble, rather than feeling like they were just thrown in for the sake of drama. I believe that Ben would struggle with leaving without Anakin, because he felt it would ruin what Anakin had. I believe that Anakin would give up everything he worked so hard for, for love. I believe that they would struggle to not be together, to balance their careers versus their private relationship. But it’s never too much, it never had me rolling my eyes and telling them to get over themselves, because either it was reasonable or else it was entirely in character and I love them for being themselves.   It’s a softer fic, it’s a modern AU fic, but there’s a kind of magic this story had, one that was so easy to get swept up in, to become invested in, right along with the characters. It’s sweet and almost domestic, but it was charming as hell, genuinely so, and there was such obvious love and affection and sharpness written into these characters, it’s such a great pull between these two characters that they couldn’t stay away from each other, that you can feel the sheer amount of affection the author has for them and their relationship. And it was an entirely satisfying experience to read this fic, to read this final chapter, where everything works out exactly as it was always going to work out, the most fitting ending I could ask for! ✦ The Apprenticeship by Nny11, ahsoka & yoda & anakin & cast, 31.4k wip   The doors only open when a Master opens them for their Padawan, a subtle reminder to them that a student needs a teacher’s guidance and that teachers must let them go. The force thinks it’s rather funny when it alters history by forcing Master Yoda to take on a very young Ahsoka Tano as his Padawan.   I do have the caveat ahead of time that this fic is more about summarizing events than showing direct action or dialogue (though, it’s very much interspersed with these things!) and that it’s not always clear about the timeline and that Ahsoka is far, far younger than canon here, which did distract me a few times, but I mention them because setting myself in the right frame of mind got me such a lovely fic here. It’s got all this really interesting and engaging bits of worldbuilding woven into pretty much everything here, every scene has details to fill out the world, every scene has character moments for Ahsoka or the Jedi or Yoda, how she struggles with her life there, but also she loves it, that there’s so much good there, that she’s a Togruta and has certain instincts that she uses in an absolutely adorable and perfect way with the other Jedi younglings, that her relationship with Yoda isn’t always perfect but there’s such deep care there and they clearly mean the galaxy to each other, that her friendship with Anakin is important as well, sometimes rocky and he doesn’t always understand the life she’s chosen, he’s volatile at times, but you can see why she cares deeply about him.   I think where the fic really won me over, as much as I appreciate the deeper stuff about Jedi workings, were the smaller moments, like when Ahsoka tussled with a Wookiee in the Temple and briefly got hurt and there was just so much care and helping them both to refocus their energies and it all worked out that I knew I was in love. But I also appreciated that her argument with Anakin showed that he didn’t really ever understand what people got out of being a Jedi, that I could see he meant well and I loved him very much, but Ahsoka’s frustration and hurt at the way he yelled was spot on. Or the way her horns itched and she went to ask Shaak Ti for help. Or the way Ahsoka struggled with the more boring parts of her duty or what she wanted to do with her life and what the Force was telling her, versus her vows and her duty. And that Yoda obviously cared very much about her and was listening to her! The structure is more tell (instead of show) than I usually read, but the sheer amount of thought and detail and care and clever little bits of worldbuilding the story was absolutely packed with and the spot-on characterization of Ahsoka and Yoda especially, but also Obi-Wan in the background, made this one of those fics that I eagerly read my entire way through in like a day and a half because it was just so incredibly solid in everything it was working to achieve! This chapter was a really fantastic read for Anakin’s character and the position he’s starting to understand that he’s in and that the people around him are in, that it’s a really lovely look at the anger issues he has and how much he’s trying to be better, that Obi-Wan’s having left forces a shift and a scramble that has things happening that might not have otherwise–including a really stellar conversation between Mace and Anakin that’s so good at the delicate line it needs to walk, to not be preachy but instead feel like these characters would have this discussion, to not throw anyone to the wolves narratively, but instead be entirely good-spirited about bringing people together. Like, that makes this fic so much more enjoyable and so much stronger as a story! But also it’s just really, really solidly good and, oh, Mace’s quiet explanation, the sheer exhaustion and tension that I felt running through that scene, was gorgeously done. It’s so spot on about the pressures and difficulties they all face that I just wanted to roll over and clutch my reader to my chest for awhile after reading it.   But the other half of this chapter that was so goddamned satisfying was Bant being unable to keep up with everything Obi-Wan had done and how that plays out with Anakin and the other Jedi and the fic doing this really deft, delicate dance to show the horrible position the war had put them all in, the sheer amount of amazing that is Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the sadness and anger from Anakin when he realizes just how much he never really realized. How much he’s been protected from, how much Obi-Wan didn’t want to speak of, how much there is that Anakin just never knew. And how much visions can really fucking suck in both some really neat world-building and theorizing about the Jedi and their connection to the Force and how they deal with it, but also tying it into the greater plot.   It’s also another chapter that does a fantastic job of how Obi-Wan and Anakin aren’t in the same scene at the same time, but that connection is so important, Anakin’s deep well of feelings about Obi-Wan, the anger and hurt this has stirred up, do my fannish heart good because of just what that says about how they care about each other. The way Anakin tries to understand what he’s doing, why he did it, and his sheer bullheaded determination to bring Obi-Wan back because he wants him back, like, oh, Anakin, but also I’m eating this up like you wouldn’t believe. It has such thought going into it and such a delicate touch with bringing so many things to light (like Obi-Wan being overworked and how that may change how Anakin sees things later, may change his view of certain people, how he’s seeing so much more of the Jedi’s exhaustion when they’re forced into this position with him, how his own anger issues are coming up to the surface and being looked at, rather than Anakin shoving them down, him learning that everyone is complicated, not just his own feelings! in a way that makes me love Anakin SO MUCH!) and all of this is wrapped up in so much good world-building and care for the characters and the galaxy and really lovely, fantastic writing. It’s a happy universe where Anakin and Padme are getting into a snowball fight with their children and the three of them gang up on Padme, who is having the most warm-hearted, wonderful time and prepares to make her final stand, when some help arrives and of course Obi-Wan turns the tide and there are shifting alliances and everything absolutely sparkles and is adorable. It’s one of those fics that could have so easily gone into sappy territory, but it keeps a certain sharpness and charisma, there’s something that’s just the right amount of fluff combined with how I could see this as the happy version of these characters. I read it for the soul-soothing quality of it, but came away having enjoyed that it was really good and genuinely funny and sharp in amongst the softness! It’s a fic about the attraction between these two, the way they can’t help but be drawn to each other, the way Obi-Wan watches Anakin, the way he admires him and the way he interacts with Anakin, the way Anakin is an amazing brat, the way he teases and needles, wanting a reaction, until Obi-Wan gives him one, his desire to put Anakin back in his place, in a loving but firm way, to fuck him into a compliant mess. And of course Anakin responds to that, something in him thrives on that, the way Obi-Wan pushes him back, teases him with his liips and tongue before opening Anakin up with his fingers and being patient enough to make Anakin whine and plead for it. Their ship crashes on Christophsis, they’re stranded about ten days away from the nearest city, and there’s a very long hike and a whole lot of fairly unknown terrain ahead of them. There’s a really nice sharpness to the writing and the characters here, it’s smooth and sails along really well, the dialogue is funny or intriguing, the way Obi-Wan and Anakin work together feels true to their dynamic, and I’m really enjoying the descriptions of the landscape, the use of their supplies, etc. It feels like a fleshed out fic, like an especially UST-laden professional novel that I could be reading! But also it has some genuinely funny moments, when they wake up on their first morning after the crash, there’s a scene with Anakin being Anakin that had me unable to stop smiling and softly giggling because it was just so charmingly funny and I’m enjoying whatever’s going on with Anakin and the way Obi-Wan is concerned about him, but also trying to respect his wishes, that there’s such weight to both characters here, they both have a strong presence, and I’m very much looking forward to the next chapter. ✦ Somewhere In Time by DonkerRood, obi-wan/anakin, NSFW, time travel, 25k wip   Anakin crashes on Tatooine and to his surprise finds Obi-Wan there. He learns he has travelled in time and ended up in a terrible future.   I picked up this fic recently and promptly got sucked into it and read it in such a flurry that now I’m not even sure where to start with this rec! It’s one of those fics that’s set against the backdrop of a bigger plot, but is ultimately a more intimate drama sort of piece, that the focus is on the feelings between these characters, as Anakin winds up on Tatooine, meeting Obi-Wan who is just a few months post-ROTS, and Anakin working to accept what’s happened, his feelings for Obi-Wan, and how to get back/fix all of this. It’s a story that uses all these fun elements as a catalyst to bring these two together and work on their relationship, to give them the space they both need to touch those feelings and let them come forward, for Anakin to accept what he’s capable of (knowing Darth Vader exists and is out there and what he did), for them both to work on understanding why this happened, since neither of them are sure. There are some lovely moments of Anakin/Padme as well (though, this is defintely more of an Obikin fic so far), it’s 25k of just pure feelings exploration of Obi-Wan getting Anakin back, even though he can’t keep him, of both of them finding a hope that they never thought possible again.   And, like, I’m always going to be here for that kind of thing, I’m going to be here for Anakin tripping over himself and Obi-Wan having to be the adult, Obi-Wan really seeing the cracked foundations of Anakin and realizing he needs more help than Obi-Wan thought, I’m always here for the characters getting the room to process this, when they had none of that in the canon, that they were all too crowded out by the war and Palpatine’s manipulations. I’m always going to be here for fic that takes about 20k of talking and arguing and taking an uneven, bumpy path towards fixing things, I’m always going to be here for the absolute embracing of just reveling in all these feelings, that it takes this amount of time to make sure that Obi-Wan’s not hurting Anakin with any of this, because he would never, not if he had a choice about it.   This is a fic for when you want some fun time travel setting that’s really about a cathartic working through of issues, that there’s a charm to the story that pulled me in, and hooked me, the kind of emotional drama that I just absolutely eat up! Plus, chapter 10 had some lovely sex, that they couldn’t do more than mutual blowjobs (which were very nice!) because there was no lube, but, oh, Obi-Wan wanted to just wrap Anakin’s legs around him and lift him up and fuck into him, but he’s still the Adult In The Room, even as Anakin pleads and whines for more, just so out of his mind with want that he doesn’t care, not really realizing what it would do to him. And I’m always here for that, too, I’m always here for Anakin being reduced to a total mess because he can just let everything go and out that way, he gets the attention he so desires and Obi-Wan gets to look after him, as he desires as well. To have Anakin filled up with something better than his usual storm of emotions is what I’m here for and they were so close, though, the blowjobs were lovely and so was Anakin cuddling up against Obi-Wan, who wrapped his arms around this person he loves so much, which I’m always going to be a sucker for. It was a good balance of sweet (which is what I read sick fic for in the first place!) with something heavier, more weighty, that can’t be resolved here, but is gently touched on, so you know it’s there. But, really, it’s fun banter that’s sharp, hilarious, and shows how much these two care about each other, how it comes from both of them, that even when sick, Obi-Wan is still sharp and has a comment, that even when worried and kind of emotionally messy, Anakin definitely learned that from his Master. It was just really, really enjoyable to read! ✦ Put That Thing Back Where It Came From by FireflyFish, obi-wan/anakin & cast, 1.6k wip   Anakin picked up something he really shouldn’t have and now he and Obi-Wan are on “medical leave”.   I’ve read this first chapter over more than once and I laugh like wild every time, it’s so beautifully hilarious and has such a great sense of comedic timing and pulls off the crack-treated-semi-seriously element of it. I wanted “cursed to physically touch, only way to get out of it is ~resolution” fic for ages and now Fishy has granted us that! And it’s SO FUNNY, the kind of giggling where my face hurt afterwards! Every scene is beautifully done, from getting the news about how to break the curse to the other Jedi maybe kind of finding this hilarious to Obi-Wan and Anakin not entirely sure how to deal with each other and having to hold hands the entire time and every time, EVERY TIME the scene gets to Anakin’s friend being a little shit, to Obi-Wan’s genuinely scary threat, to Anakin’s irritated as hell reaction, I lose it all over again. It’s been awhile since this fic updated, but I had no trouble slipping right back into it and picking it up again! And I think what I liked best about this chapter, after everything that’s happened and the characters are having chances to react, is that Anakin’s reaction to Mace’s apology can be both justified and fairly unkind at the same time, that it was a messy and difficult situation they were in, so the aftermath is messy and difficult as well, that I came away feeling for both characters here. Which always makes a story stronger, when no character is perfect, but you can genuinely understand where both sides are coming from, that neither of them is just a strawman! (And I could read that the Jedi were going to work harder to petition the Senate, who were the ones that could actually say what they could or couldn’t do about bad things in the galaxy, since the Jedi didn’t have that legal authority themselves!) But also the chapter left me with such excitment, that there’s new stuff afoot and likely soon to be an Obi-Wan/Anakin reunion and possibly some stuff with Shmi and now the worst should be mostly over (assuming there’s not new terrible things) and there really is a warmth to this fic that I greatly enjoy and I was so delighted to see more of this one. ✦ untitled by darthcuddles, obi-wan/anakin, modern au, ~1k   There is something intoxicating about this place, and it’s not the whiskey or the music or the lights. It moves Anakin up about seven years and makes him fairly entirely emotionally stable, so it’s this soft, warm, fuzzy blanket that changes a lot things to make it one of those that was just fun to read. It’s not quite compatible with canon Jedi but it’s mostly good-spirited about everything that I found myself rolling with it pretty easily and the heart of what I was here for, the sheer affection there is in this fic, between the characters and for the pairing, was absolutely wonderful. When fic is kind, it just puts this absolute utter warm glow in me like I can’t even describe! This is one of those you pick up when you want something happy to read, when you want a bit of mutual pining and an Anakin who enjoys taking care of kids and a mildly slow burn Obi-Wan/Anakin pairing where they both work through what they want from life and it’s done with such cheer and softness and kindness to just about everyone (except Sheev, fuck that guy) and joyful embracing of all the fun tropes of such a thing that it just put a smile on my face. It’s also got a lovely bit of sex at the end, a nice capping of resolution to the fic that was just the right length and was just the right amount of satisfying. The pacing was just right, I picked this up and rolled right along with it, the whole way through, I had no trouble reading it one sitting because it sailed along and was just everything I hoped for! ✦ The Nature of Fire by Phosphorescent, anakin/padme & cast, 6.2k wip   “One Jedi, then,” Padmé offered to the others. At least let me speak the truth to my love. At least. Please, she pleaded with them silently. “There is one Jedi—one whom I truly know all of us can trust absolutely …” Her voice trailed off into appalled silence when she realized that she wasn’t talking about Anakin.   Chapter 2: This is an update rec and will focus on this chapter, rather than the fic as a whole! This continues to be a really fascinating, engaging, and well written fic for a Padme who takes a hard look at this relationship with her husband that’s so full of love, but also so full of some very worrisome things. That this entirely about Padme’s role in the story, her thoughts and feelings as everything seems to be crumbling around her, and the sheer amount of herself she’s pouring into trying to make better. Her conversation with Palpatine is simple on the surface of things, but how it feels so exhausting and infuriating is spot on, how her relationship with Anakin feels so tense and upsetting precisely because she cares about him but he’s become so angry and so unwilling to listen, how she’s struggling in this Herculean-feeling task at trying to save the things she cares about. She tries to be gentle in nudging Anakin to see what she’s talking about, the delicate line she has to walk with the other Senators and their distrust of the Jedi, how she has to be careful around Anakin who throws so much support to Palpatine blindly, how there’s something that burns in Padme, a fire that is stoked here, rather than smothered, and it’s so fascinating to read, it’s such a lovely fic for her character! ✦ Lightly, Lightly by DraloreShimare, obi-wan & anakin & ahsoka, ~1k   Anakin may not be a Padawan anymore, but he could still use a lesson or two.   This was a short but utterly delightful piece of the grand tradition of an apprentice roasting their Master whenever they get the chance and that Ahsoka is no different, which eggs Anakin on into taunting Obi-Wan and biting off more than he can chew. What I love about it is that Ahsoka is pure joy, that Obi-Wan is the guy you never want to mess with, and that Anakin is entirely beloved, that just because he’s a bit of a disaster, that doesn’t mean he’s any less talented, that there’s clear love for each and every character here individually to my mind, as there is for the dynamic as a whole. Plus it’s just really cute and I absolutely needed more cute!
