Fate and Phantasms #103: Thomas Edison

Today on Fate and Phantasms we’re making the king of inventions, the Presi-King of the US of A, and the man who turned every president of the United States into his underwear, Thomas Edison! This inventor’s one cool cat, with a World Faith Domination that can alter the hearts and minds of a nation while also shutting down any other illusions that might be affecting them. You also make robots sometimes. You also, of course, get plenty of that good ol’ American DC current!

Race and Background

The good Presi-king’s a cat, but he’s a lot chunkier than most of the ones we’ve built so far. Fortunately, WotC have us covered with the Leonin. We’re also using Tasha’s variant race rules to mix up the ability score bonuses. Being a Leonin gives Eddy boy +2 Constitution and +1 Intelligence. He also gets Darkvision, Claws for additional unarmed damage, Hunter’s Instincts, giving him proficiency in Athletics, and a Daunting Roar, using a bonus action to force a wisdom save (DC 8 plus your constitution modifier plus your proficiency bonus) against nearby creatures, frightening them if they fail, once per short rest.

He’s also a Guild Artisan, for Insight and Persuasion proficiency. The sciences aren’t big in the Forgotten Realms, but he’s good enough at building things to get by.

Ability Scores

Put your highest ability into Intelligence. The king of inventors is smart, pretty simple. After that is Charisma, you can put on a good show when you have to. Follow this up with Dexterity, then Constitution. You’re a nerd, but you’ve got a fancy outfit on that helps a bit. This does mean your Strength is a little low, but we’ll get ways to fix that later. We’re dumping Wisdom though. History has proven that direct current just isn’t as good as alternating current in most instances. Also you’re happy to waste tons of resources on your schemes as long as they don’t come from America, which is pretty unwise.

Class Levels

1. Artificer 1: No points for guessing this one. First level artificers have proficiency with Constitution and Intelligence saves, as well as Arcana (which is the closest thing to science in D&D) and Investigation. You also get Magical Tinkering, which adds minor effects to small items, and Intelligence based Spells.

Speaking of spells, you get first level spells now, plus some cantrips. You can technically use all of them, but you have to prepare them beforehand. With a limited amount of prep, you have to pick and choose what you focus on. For cantrips, Lightning Lure adds a little spark to your life, and Dancing Lights puts on a show when necessary. You can also prepare spells like Grease, Alarm, and Snare as your first inventions. You can also learn Identify to investigate other items you come across, and turn them into your own with some improvements.

2. Artificer 2: Speaking of improvements, second level artificers can actually do that with Infuse Item. After working on an item over your long rest, you can add an infusion to it that lasts until you die or you infuse more than your limit. At level two, you can make an Armor of Magical Strength, which will give you a limited use muscle body. When you make a strength check or save you can use one of six charges to add your intelligence modifier to the roll. You can also spend a charge to avoid falling prone. An Enhanced Weapon might also be a good fit for your fighters, adding 1 to all attack and damage rolls. Sending Stones are more Bell’s thing, but he’s not here, so he won’t mind. Finally, you can also make a Homunculus Servant for the start of your mighty robot army.

3. Artificer 3: We’ll continue to build your army by becoming a Battle Smith, gaining you extra spells like Heroism and Shield to inspire and protect your meatshields. You’re also Battle Ready, allowing you to use martial weapons (that’ll come in handy later) and use your intelligence instead of strength when attacking with magic weapons.

You can also build a Steel Defender, though sadly only one. It’s a medium construct that can make melee attacks, heal itself and other constructs, though only if you spend your bonus action each turn commanding it to do so. It’s built-in hardware only has melee attacks, but building a gun shouldn’t be too complicated for you.

You can also build The Right Tool for the Job over a short rest, magically creating a set of artisan’s tools.

4. Artificer 4: Now that we have martial weapons proficiency, use this Ability Score Increase to get the Fighting Initiate feat for a new fighting style. The Unarmed Fighting style will add even more oomph to your punches than before. I’d argue that magicking up some gloves with tinkering would count them as magic weapons, but that’s something to argue with your DM over. You’ll be good either way by the end of the build, but that would get your there much faster.

5. Wizard 1: Speaking of complicated, here’s a billion extra spells. Wizards get a whole new list that’s kept in their spellbook and use Intelligence to cast. You also gain an Arcane Recovery, letting you recover spell slots on a short rest with a total level equal to half your wizard level rounded up.

For cantrips, Light and Prestidigitation will help you put on a show, and Mending can repair your Steel Defender for free. You can also make a horror movie to Cause Fear, use Color Spray to blind people with science, Magic Missile for caster balls, Unseen Servant for another robot buddy, Silent Image for classic films, and Protection from Evil and Good for the anti-mysticism effects.

(We know Unseen Servant doesn’t have an actual visible body, but it’s a straight downgrade from RAW, so it’s an easy sell for your DM.)

6. Wizard 2: You make movies, and the closest thing we can get in D&D would be Illusions. As an Illusion Savant, it costs you half as much gold to copy illusion spells. You also get an Improved Minor Illusion that can create sound and images at the same time.

You also get Tenser’s Floating Disk for a carrier robot, and Find Familiar for yet another non-combat drone. For those of you playing along at home, you can now have a familiar, a defender, a homunculus, and either a servant or floating disk with concentration. You’re not exactly a military powerhouse yet, but you’re getting there.

7. Artificer 5: Fifth level artificers get an Extra Attack each attack action, as well as second level spells. Your specialties are Branding Smite and Warding Bond, but you can also make Magic Mouths to leave behind recordings, and use See Invisibility to look past others’ illusions.

8. Artificer 6: Sixth level artificers have Tool Expertise, doubling your tool proficiencies. You can also make another infusion at once, and learn two more to fill that slot. A Spell-Refueling Ring is great for casters pulling an all-nighter, and Gloves of Thievery aren’t really in character, but they’re an excuse to use Battle Ready with your unarmed attacks.

9. Artificer 7: Every once in a while you have a Flash of Genius. Normally this would lead to some country that isn’t America getting ransacked for natural resources, but in D&D it means you can react to add your intelligence modifier to any saving throw or check done within 30 feet of you. This can be used a number of times per long rest equal to your intelligence modifier.

10. Wizard 3: Third level wizards get second level spells. You specifically get Dragon’s Breath and Enhance Ability to improve your robots’ combat capabilities. (I mean, breathing fire would improve anything’s combat capabilities, but using it on your robots is in character.)

11. Wizard 4: Use this ASI to bump up your Intelligence for better... well, everything. You also get the Friends cantrip and Suggestion spell to help bury that busybody Tesla with your social connections, and Flock of Familiars for, you guessed it, more robots.

12. Wizard 5: Fifth level wizards get third level spells, like Dispel Magic and Remove Curse for more anti-mysticism tech.

13. Wizard 6: Sixth level illusionists can make Malleable Illusions, allowing you to change what an illusion spell you’ve cast is depicting as an action. You can also cast Major Image now, and Lightning Bolt will bolster your lagging electrical toolkit.

14. Artificer 8: Eighth level artificers get another ASI and not much else, but it does mean your Intelligence is now maxed out for the strongest spells and most flashes of genius possible.

15. Artificer 9: Your Arcane Jolt can deal extra damage or heal people when you hit a creature with your own magical weapons or your steel defender. When you’re as busy as you are, fitting as much into a single action as possible is paramount.

You also get third level spells again, specializing in an Aura of Vitality and the ability to Conjure Barrage. You can also create a Tiny Servant for yet another construct, or use Protection from Energy and Elemental Weapon to add even more electricity into your party’s life.

16. Artificer 10: Tenth level artificers are Magic Item Adepts, letting you attune for four magic items at once, and crafting common and uncommon magic items are much faster and cheaper.

You can also cast Guidance now, because why not, and learn two more invocations. Helm of Awareness gives you more situational awareness, and Gauntlets of Ogre Strength gives you punches that don’t require technicalities to deal damage.

17. Artificer 11: Eleventh level artificers can make Spell Storing Items, storing magical effects in weapons and focii. The spell has to be on the artificer list, 2nd level or lower, and take one action to cast.

18. Artificer 12: Use this ASI to bump up your Dexterity for a better AC. Your armor’s pretty good, but you should help it where you can.

19. Artificer 13: After five levels, you finally bump up to fourth level spells, with the specialty spells Aura of Purity and Fire Shield. You can also Fabricate items out of nothing, and your robot army finally gets more power with Mordenkainen’s Faithful Hound and Summon Construct. (Like Unseen Servant, the Faithful Hound shouldn’t be visible, but again, an easy sell to your DM.)

20. Artificer 14: Your capstone level makes you a Magic Item Savant, giving you yet another attunement slot, and the ability to ignore class and race requirements when using magic items.

You also get Mage Hand for another kind of drone, and two new infusions. Amulet of Health will make you a bit tougher, and Gem of Seeing will help you see through enemy illusions for one final bit of anti-mystic technology.

Pros:

With proper flavoring, your robot army can be super useful, despite the small number of them that can directly attack creatures. Use familiars to revive fallen teammates or even turn macguffins into Tiny Servants at a distance, TS up your fighter’s crossbow so it’ll reload itself, or use unseen servants as stealth bombers. The world is your toolbox.

You’re also good at destroying other magic, with magic items to help see through illusions and invisibility and spells like Dispel Magic and Remove Curse to tear up mysticism affecting your party and your path forward.

Your spells and artifacts are powerful, but there’s something to be said for just being able to punch people. Maybe your DM wants to take you down a peg by tearing up all your robots, only to get the shock of their life when you’re still able to hold your own.

Cons:

While you can survive without your infusions, you’re still tied to your gear in the long run, with infusions providing you the toughness necessary to get into melee range to begin with, and your spellbook holding a sizeable chunk of what you can cast at any given time.

You also have low wisdom, so without your gear you might have a hard time seeing through illusions.

Despite your impressive physique and robot army, most of your gear is suited for indirect combat at best. You can punch and shoot lightning if you have to, but getting other people to be the muscle is still going to be your plan A.

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light review: that which died so that Bravely Default could live

Ah, Bravely Default, Square Enix’s unexpected, but pleasant, little gift to the 3DS, an RPG meant to be a throwback to the days of the SNES, about a bunch of dorks bumbling their way into saving the world. With its great characters, fantastic music, downright gorgeous art design, and innovative battle system, it, and its sequel, Bravely Second, make for some of the best RPGs on the 3DS. I’m not here to talk about those, though, at least not quite yet. I’m here to talk about the Final Fantasy spinoff on the original DS that inspired them. This is Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, itself a throwback to older RPGs, and easily one of the most obscure spinoffs in the series. Does it measure up to the standards of its spiritual successors?

Short answer, no. But since nobody reads these for the short answers, buckle in your seat belts, because this’ll be a ride.

Story:

The game follows 4 teenagers from the kingdom of Horne: Brandt, Jusqua, Yunita, and Aire, who, after defeating the local witch, Louhi, who kidnapped Aire, the kingdom’s princess, are branded to be the Heroes of Light by the planet’s guardian, the Crystal, who warns them of a darkness that threatens to destroy the world. Upon returning to their home, they find all its inhabitants turned to stone by the curse of the witch. Unfortunately, the Crystal could not have picked a worse group of people to task with saving the world. Brandt is an insecure idiot who blindly dashes ahead to try to become stronger, Jusqua is a lazy jerk adverse to putting in effort, even when it’s a good cause, Aire is a greedy spoiled brat of a princess concerned mostly with keeping herself well off, regardless of the consequences to other people, and Yunita is a knight with severe self esteem issues, which wouldn’t be too damaging on its own... if not for her companions treating her awfully and ditching her at the drop of a hat. Needless to say, these are not attractive qualities in a hero, and they split up immediately after discovering what happened to their home, and while Brandt and Yunita do try to find a solution to their home’s predicament, with Jusqua and Aire essentially giving up and taking refuge in a different town, most of the plot boils down to them wandering around trying to fix problems they themselves caused, while trying to fix the problems of all the towns they come across, swapping between themselves in parties of two, and picking up and dropping guest party members. It gets more than a bit frustrating after a while, and feels quite aimless, until things get a lot more interesting once they reunite in the floating city of Spelvia.

Major game spoilers from this point on, just as a warning

The city of Spelvia is home to the original hero of light, Rolan, who saved the world three hundred years before with the help of his dragon companion. After doing so, his father, the chief of the town Invidia, ordered him to create an empire in Spelvia. His dragon having died in the battle against the darkness, and left alone to create his empire, Rolan became filled with bitterness and resentment, refusing to help the new heroes despite being the only hope to save Horne. The heroes try to help him by freeing his soul of his darkness... only to, as usual, completely mess up and cause the darkness to cover the entire world, somehow causing time to roll back to 15 years in the past. As it turns out, however, this was the best thing possible, as the troubles of the various kingdoms, including Rolan’s own darkness. are revealed to be the work of 7 demons, Asmodeus, Belphegor, Leviathan, Lucifer, Beelzebub, Mammon, and Satan. After defeating them all, they traverse to the source of the darkness and destroy the mastermind behind it all, Chaos (this definitely isn’t familiar at all, huh).

While the plot definitely has interesting ideas and cool moments, it’s still not a great success. The plot for the first half of the game is rather thin and meandering, and the characters just aren’t memorable, with the lack of interaction between the main cast being one of the biggest flaws. Still, it’s an interesting effort, if nothing else.

Gameplay:

The 4 Heroes of Light is uses a turn based battle system that is somewhat reminiscent of its spiritual successor, Bravely Default, though still quite different. The main similarity is the use of AP. All your party members have a max of 5 AP they can store. One is given automatically every turn, and choosing to defend will give an extra one. AP is used for everything, from using abilities, to casting magic, to simply attacking, to the point there isn’t even MP. The stronger the abilities, the more AP they take to use, with high level spells using 4, and the most advanced abilities using 4 or 5. However, compared to Bravely Default, there’s a few major problems with this system. While not having to worry about having to keep your MP up seems nice, the trade off of having to use more AP for stronger abilities is actually rather damaging. If you, say, wanted to attack with Firaga, you’d need to defend twice just to build up enough AP to cast it once, essentially only being able to go once every three turns, which isn’t very efficient, especially when high level spells like that are one of your only methods for hitting multiple enemies, not to mention the problems healers face.

While using a lower level spell may seem like the obvious solution, it’s not that simple. TFHOL (I cannot type out that whole name everytime) uses a customizable ability system where, in addition to the basic three commands of attacking, defending, and using items, you have 6 free ability slots that can be filled with either job abilities, of which there are 4 each, and magic, which anyone can freely use. While this may sound fine and dandy, it’s actually a pretty restrictive number. Even aside from the job abilities, most of which are quite valuable, the sheer amount of spells available means a lot of spreading them out between your party members, who will likely be less effective at magic than others, and have duties to focus on besides magic. Even worse, in a move I can only call utterly baffling, there is no way to manually target in battle. Physical moves always hit the enemy in front, to the right, and magical attacks always hit the enemy in back, to the left, while healing and other support magic just goes to whoever the computer thinks needs it from a pure numbers standpoint. This can result in your meathead healing your paladin at low health for piddly amounts, while your dedicated healer heals your bard that already got off all their buffs off just because they now had a bit less HP, not to mention a dangerous enemy remaining in battle longer than you’d like just cause they’re in a spot that the auto target refuses to go for. There is absolutely no reason they couldn’t put in manual targeting. Aside from magic specifically, though, the ability system is flawed in how utterly restricted you are without it. For instance, the simple ability to run from battles, one of the most basic things in an RPG, is restricted to one specific job, one that’s rather poor offensively, to boot. Yes, if you get into a random encounter without said job, you’re forced to fight it, no way around it.

As mentioned many times, this game uses a system where your different characters can switch between various jobs. These range from the traditional white and black mages, the dedicated healers and offensive magic users, to bards and musicians, with job abilities to provide buffs to the party, to the more traditionally offensive rangers and bandits, to some very.... weird ones, such as the Salve-Maker, dedicated to enhancing the effects of items, to the elementalist, which manipulates elemental effectiveness and resistance, to, all things, the party host, which relies on psyching the party up, making them more effective in battle. They can get pretty creative, and they all have some kind of use in battle, regardless of how far in the game you are. They also all have passive abilities, such as the black and white mage reducing the amount of AP needed to use their respective types of magic by one, along with different stats that determine their effectiveness at certain things, such as using different weapons. The progression on getting them, however, is pretty slow. Other than the default freelancer, at first you’re only given the wayfarer, the aforementioned job able to run from battles, once you first assemble your full party, and afterwards, you unlock two jobs per city story arc, and while it’s not too awful a pace, it still takes a while before you’re given some kind of variety, though there’s a few that can only be gotten through minigames as well. This is only worsened by your party permanently being halved for half the game, or in some cases only being given 1 person to control. This limits your options even further. Trying to use more supportive jobs such as the bard can put all the pressure on your other party member, not to mention it’s a downer in general, having your creativity limited so.

Aside from the basic EXP leveling gained from defeating enemies, jobs can level up through gems dropped by enemies, unlocking new abilities. While fine in concept, in execution, it’s not well balanced at all. There’s 8 different types of gems, all of which are eventually needed to level up, and you need very specific amounts of each to level the jobs up. Additionally, gems are also your main source of currency for a while, since enemies don’t drop money, forcing you to balance saving them for strengthening your jobs, and being able to buy at least a few things. Gems aren’t guaranteed drops, and they can only drop a max of 4 per battle normally anyway, making it even grindier. Worst of all, the final type, the diamonds, are only dropped by bosses, which are obviously finite, with the exception of the respawning bosses in the bonus dungeons, which have their own problems, which I’ll get to in a bit. In the end, it’s just an unnecessary complication compared to enemies giving JP to level up your jobs like in Bravely Default.

No beating around the bush, this is a difficult game, and not for all the right reasons. Combined with the aforementioned difficulties such as no manual targeting, the encounter rate is pretty high, with enemies more than happy to wreck your day, and the game tries to do everything it can to spite you further. For instance, the inventory system works by each of your party members a limited amount of space to hold items. To equip equipment and spells, though, you need to physically keep them in said character’s inventory, which takes up quite a bit of space, and there’s no item stacking either; you want to have potions on hand, every potion you take is another space lost. While it generally doesn’t cause too many problems, from my experience, it’s still a pretty irritating wrinkle, especially when enemies can drop tons of items. Another, much more frustrating example, comes once you transition into the second half of the game, once the party reunites. The random encounters actually start scaling to your level, essentially meaning that your levels become meaningless. This is another detail that’s downright baffling to me, especially when them scaling means they give out more and more EXP as you level up, meaning you’ll hit the level cap pretty easily, and with barely anything to show for it. The bosses can also be huge roadblocks, especially the 7 demons, with special shout outs to Asmodeus, who has an attack that hits the whole party and has a chance of inflicting every status ailment in the game on your party members, including ones like stone, which pretty much kill them outright. Still, the bosses are also the highlight of the game, when they’re not making you pull your hair out.

You’re also restricted to saving at save points, which can be pretty annoying with how long and labyrinthine the later dungeons can get, especially with the final dungeon’s save point only being halfway through. You’re not even allowed to save on the world map. On that subject, the world map is extremely small and barren. While the early parts of the game sort of hide it with their extreme linearity, once you’re given free reign, and a dragon to ride, it quickly becomes apparent just how little there even is, with only a few optional locations, most of which are the bonus dungeons, which sane players are better off skipping. They’re 4 giant towers that go on for 100 floors, containing loads of random encounters, several bosses, and random equipment, and even jobs from the very last bosses. The problem is, everything except every 10th floor is a regular floor where you just have to find the exit, the problem being they get so utterly massive towards the end it can take half an hour to find the exit, not helped by the constant random encounters. Even with the rewards they offer, there is no word to describe them other than exhausting, and they’re easily some of the most miserable challenges I’ve gone through in a game. Even worse, you’re expected to farm these for gems and a special item that can upgrade your equipment. It’s a waste of time and sanity.

Overall, while the gameplay is a homage to older RPGs, it mainly captures the worst aspects of them instead. I’ve played many RPGs, and none have frustrated me anywhere near as much as this game.

Graphics:

The graphics of TFHOL are actually quite good. It was meant to have the feel of a popup book, and as a result, it has a bright and colorful feel to it.

It also has some pretty inventive location concepts, especially the final dungeon, the Star Chamber.

The biggest highlight to me, however, is the enemy designs, especially the 7 demons and Chaos. They tend to look inventive and distinct, and was even carried into Bravely Default, where it works even better.

Sound:

The music is simply fantastic in this game. It’s all in chiptune, and it works extremely well, even if it sounds a bit funny at first. From the blood pumping boss themes, to the creepy cave and dungeon themes, to quite a few that sound downright beautiful, like the dragon’s theme and Spelvia’s theme, being in chiptune does nothing to harm it. It also gets points for including night versions of every town theme, which sound beautiful in their own right.

Overall:

This is a game that does quite a few things right. The graphics, the music, even the story and the more climatic boss fights all work great. The base gameplay, however, is nothing short of a mess. I downright hated this game when I beat it, and while I’m not quite as emotional over it now, it’s still a very solid heavily not recommended. However, it did lead to the creation of Bravely Default, and for that, it deserves to be acknowledged. Till next time.

Hello everyone! Today is a happy day! I have 30 followers now! As a sign of appreciation, I will be doing this special 5-part series. 50 bosses that proved to be quite a challenge. Now for some rules… This list in my opinion. Some bosses on this list were difficult when I was a child but may not be hard now…Those examples are more towards the 50-40 and 40-30 section. I will try to limit one boss per game, however be prepared for an exception later on. This list may contain spoilers so read with caution. I will include all games in the boss description and in the tags, feel free to skip one if you don’t want spoilers. Finally here is a little guide for my decision making process…

50 – 41 – Might have been hard the first time I fought them, but are now significantly easier.

40 – 31 – Tough then and still provide a challenge now but are still easier to fight when compared to the first fight.

30 – 21 – Hard then, still tough now but not as much. Overall manageable, but they might get a victory or two over me.

20 – 11 – Hard then and still tough now. While I will not struggle as much as my first fight, they will still provide a tough challenge.

10 – 1 – Very hard then and very hard now. These bosses are so difficult that no matter how many times I fight them they still manage to be a huge challenge.

Now without further ado, lets get started.

NUMBER 50 General Tsao (Sly 3)

General Tsao is one of the villains from Sly 3. He serves as a menace to former foe Panda King. He intends to marry the Panda King’s daughter, and her consent is blatantly ignored. After sabotaging his base and pestering him in the shadows, Sly and this chicken finally clash. This fight has two stages, stage one is manageable enough. Armed with his sawblade shield and fire balls, he attacks from the top of Bamboo sticks. Avoiding him is easy and he often leads himself open, its once the battle takes to the ground things heat up… On the ground, he attacks relentlessly and often retaliates to combos. He can summon various magical entities to track you down such as zombie hands that are very fast. He has quite a bit of health as well. This is made worse during one of the challenges which require beating him with only half your health. Also, did I mention he is horribly sexist? Because he is.

Hardest thing about this boss – His zombie hand attack can really be a nuisance. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NUMBER 49 Jaguar Chase (The Emperor’s new Groove)

My first button masher. This boss was a huge roadblock for me when I was a child. The premise is simple, outrun the Jaguars, avoid obstacles and reach the end. The problem was the button mashing, my little hands got tired so fast and I could never beat it! My grandfather wound up beating this level with me! He did the button mashing and I steered the character around the obstacles. While this boss is not nearly as hard today, it still brings back memories of frustration and relief when I beat it. It can be a challenge to try to get all the coins in one run though….

Hardest part about this boss – MY POOR BABY HANDS! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NUMBER 48 The Cyberdemon (Doom)

The infamous Cyberdemon from Doom. First appearing in the Tower of Babel level, then later in the THY FLESH CONSUME episode. Along with some appearances in DOOM 2. The Cyberdemon is a powerful foe armed with a rocket launcher. Its roar is frightening, and its stature is intimidating. While a simple boss with only one attack, that said attack packs a punch. It is fought in a large arena dotted with giant pillars that can be used as cover. The best weapons against this guy is either the plasma rifle, the rocket launcher or the BFG 9000 if you have it. It wanders around and shoots rockets, it only takes about 2 direct hits to do you in, so strafing is key. Once I figured out how to avoid its rocket it became less of a challenge. He can take punishment though, so the fight might be long. The one in the final episode is much worse, simply due to his position on the map and since the map is particularly long, so a death there sets you back pretty far.

Hardest thing about this boss – Its tough when he somehow manages to get into small enclosed spaces, causing the player to take a risk in hitting him. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NUMBER 47 Skorge (Gears of War 2)

When people think of hard bosses in the Gears of War series, most fingers point to general RAAM. However, I never really had that much of a problem with RAAM even on higher difficulties. Skorge is the cream of the locust crop in my opinion. The high priest of the locust hoard and main general of the army after RAAM’s death. Skorge is aggressive and mobile, he starts the fight by trying to crush you with pillars in the palace of the Locust. Not to mention a swarm of tickers blowing up at your feet and the fact he drops grenades from the ceiling. His weapon of choice in this fight is a double ended chainsaw staff, which is as awesome as it sounds, and dual handguns. After destroying his staff, Skorge retreats and mounts his Hydra and a chase begins. The battle kicks it up here as he tries to knock you out of the sky. Eventually his Hydra is killed, and he is impaled on his pet’s tooth.

Hardest part of this boss – The chase, it is easy to die on the final part. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NUMBER 46 The Field Marshal (Halo Reach)

The Field Marshal is a special unique elite that appears throughout the campaign of Halo Reach. He is often accompanied by two Zealots at almost all times. First appearing early in the game, the Field Marshal attacks Noble team with his two companions, while he escapes his companions are killed. He then appears briefly and kills a member of the team “Kat” with a sniper rifle. In the end of the game, when it is up to the player to man a large cannon to ensure the Pillar of Autumn escapes, the Field Marshal and his companions block the way. The companions are tough on their own, but the Marshal can be a royal pain in the butt with his fuel rod cannon and his plasma blade. Once his shield goes down, he makes a mad rush for you with his sword, if he gets you he can easily one shot you. There is no prime strategy, just be extra careful and fight him like any other elite.

Hardest thing about this boss – His fuel rod cannon is a nightmare on higher difficulty levels, and he is quite trigger happy with it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NUMBER 45 Mask of Infamy (The Binding of Isaac)

Much of the binding of Isaac relies on good skill and a bit of RNG (random-number-generator, a more realistic way of saying ‘luck’) when it comes to items. The Mask of Infamy’s difficulty depends on your items, stats and skills. The boss starts with two parts, the titular mask and a floating heart. The Heart is the target and the mask damages you on contact. After the heart is destroyed, the mask gets faster and it can only be damaged on its back. This can be tricky as it always tries its best to remain facing you…

Hardest thing about this boss – Trying to finish it off after destroying the heart. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NUMBER 44 Final Bowser (Super Mario 64)

After a long star filled journey, its time to take on Bowser for the third and final time. Way up in the sky, Bowser’s final stand begins. The overgrown turtle has some tricks up his shell. He breaths both red and blue fire, the blue fire splits into parts and bounces around. He can create shockwaves as well. The method of beating him is the same, throw him into the bombs around his stage. There is a catch this time, Bowser breaks the stage into a star shape which can make throwing him tough. He needs three blasting in order to stay down.

Hardest thing about this boss – The final throw, where he is very aggressive, and the platform is oddly shaped. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NUMBER 43 Carnage (Ultimate Spiderman)

Carnage is one of the final bosses in Ultimate Spider Man and is fought by Venom. Carnage is tough, he jumps around and has attacks that cover a wide area. His fight covers three stages and they progressively get harder. The first stage is a one on one fight, Carnage leaves himself open a lot but retaliates often. Once his health goes down he retreats and starts to feed, restoring health. Venom must give chase, and this is where the challenge really begins. The player must balance feeding and restoring health while fighting carnage and waves of security goons. The third stage is like this as well, only in a huge room. This boss fight is an endurance test, and with Carnage’s speed and ferocity, he can be quite the challenge during the first run. Venom’s health is constantly depleting by the way.

Hardest thing about this boss – Having to balance your healing priority and keeping him from healing himself. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NUMBER 42 Wounded Vader (Star Wars the Force Unleashed)

The secret alternate final boss of the Force unleashed game. Despite being critically wounded, Vader is one of the hardest bosses in the game, even harder than the Emperor. He has plenty of health and a near infinite amount of force power at his disposal. He is a master at lightsaber combat, so attacking him head on is quite the challenge. The best way to damage him is to counter him, these can be tough and require quite a bit of focus. If you don’t counter him you will be in for a long fight. Eventually you will have to finish him off with a quick time event.

Hardest thing about this boss – The fact that he rarely puts his guard down. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NUMBER 41 The Yellow Devil (Mega Man)

The infamous yellow devil. Often regarded as the hardest boss in the original Mega Man, the yellow devil is known for pushing players to the edge. Its pattern is simple but punishing, it has two methods of attack and a very small weak spot. It reveals its’ eye and shoots at Mega Man before breaking apart and sliding across the screen. These parts are indestructible and will hurt if you hit them. The only option to retaliate is to shoot it in the eye and then avoid the onslaught before shooting it again. This battle can take time and be frustrating. There is a glitch that can be exploited to defeat it, and I admit I used this glitch the first time I beat the Yellow Devil, but since then I have beaten it properly. This evil robot has made several appearances in other games, including smash bros.

Hardest thing about this boss – Its assembly attack, while the pattern does not change, it is still difficult to dodge.

Cyberpunk 2077‘s character upgrade system includes perks, attributes, mods, and more, but you’re never going to get the most out of this game’s upgrade options if you don’t explore the wonderful, and sometimes confusing, world of Cyberware upgrades.

Cyberware upgrades are a key part of the character-building experience in Cyberpunk 2077, but many players may end up overlooking it due to both the confusing nature of the system itself and the lingering worry that you can somehow choose the “wrong” Cyberware upgrade.

While it’s not really possible to choose a strictly wrong upgrade, you can take a lot of the guesswork out of Cyberpunk 2077‘s Cyberware system by checking out our guide on Cyberware basics and a quick look at the best Cyberware pieces to install.

What is Cyberware in Cyberpunk 2077?

Cyberware allows you to upgrade your Cyberpunk 2077 character with a variety of statistical boosts and new abilities. Each part of your body can accommodate a limited number of Cyberware components specifically designed for that region.

Cyberware is essentially an extension of the game’s perk system (many implants even require a minimum number of attribute points) but tends to be a little more valuable at times due to both the power level of individual Cyberware pieces and the fact that you can relatively easily swap implants in and out based on your needs.

How Do I Acquire and Install New Cyberware in Cyberpunk 2077

Like most of the other equipment in Cyberpunk 2077, Cyberware can be bought, found, or earned by completing certain missions.

That brings us to Ripperdocs. Along with being the primary vendors of Cyberware, you won’t be able to install a new piece of Cyberware unless you visit one of the Ripperdocs found throughout Night City and the Badlands. Just be warned that purchasing and installing Cyberware is one of the most expensive activities in the game. You’re going to want to be careful with which pieces you choose to install unless you want to watch your bank account implode every time you visit a Ripperdoc.

What Is the Best Cyberware in Cyberpunk 2077?

“Best” is kind of subjective in this category considering that some Cyberware effects are only really useful to players pursuing specific types of character builds.

Having said that, we can easily recommend a few pieces of Cyberware based either on their unique attributes or their general effectiveness (or, in a couple of cases, both). While the rarest version of each of these components is always the best, don’t be afraid to settle for a lower-tier version of the best Cyberware implants while you earn the extra eddies for the best of the best.

Bioconductor

Effect: Reduces all cyberware cooldowns by 20%.

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Watson

Considering that some of Cyberpunk 2077‘s best Cyberware utilizes some kind of cooldown period, it’s incredibly valuable to be able to universally reduce cooldowns by 20%. You can obviously skip this one if you’re not planning on installing too many cooldown components.

Biomonitor

Effect: Instantly restores 50% Health when Health drops to 15% (180 sec. cooldown)

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Watson

While this piece’s three-minute cooldown can be a bit rough, this is one of the key components for players interested in building a nearly unkillable V.

Bioplastic Blood Vessels

Effect: Increases Health regen outside of combat by 2 points per second.

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Watson (Northside and Northwest of Kabuki)

This is a generally useful Cyberware piece that has the potential to break the game if it’s paired with the right combination of perks that boost your regen abilities. At the very least, it helps you bounce from fight to fight with minimal downtime.

Fortified Ankles

Effect: Hold the jump button to charge a powerful leap.

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Watson (Northside, Northwest of Kabuki, North of Kabuki)

There’s actually a couple of directions you can go in when you’re looking for leg implants, but it’s hard to argue against the long-term value of Fortified Ankles. While this mod won’t let you leap tall buildings in a single bound, you’d be surprised by how many navigation options it opens up.

Gorilla Arms

Effect: Gorilla Arms charge with each attack. When you perform a Strong Attack, they deal bonus damage based on the charge level. Gorilla Arms also allow you to force open locked doors and rip turrets from their bases.

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Watson (Northside, Northwest of Kabuki, North of Kabuki)

One of the coolest pieces of Cyberware in the game is a near necessity for pure melee builds, but its real value may lie in how it allows you to enjoy some of the fringe benefits of strength-focused characters without having to fully commit to that playstyle.

Heal-On-Kill

Effect: Instantly restores 10% Health after defeating an enemy.

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Watson (Northside, North of Kabuki)

For melee and gunslinger builds (especially Cold Blooded builds) this piece of Cyberware makes life much easier. When combined with the proper series of weapons, perks, and augmentations, this ability makes it easier than ever to leave a battle virtually unscathed.

Heat Converter

Effect: When affected by Burn, intead of receiving damage from it, you deal 10% more damage.

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Watson (Northwest of Kabuki)

Burn attacks are among the most annoying things to deal with in Cyberpunk 2077, so being able to ignore them is reason enough to pursue this implant. The fact you get a damage boost on top of that effect is just the cherry on top.

Lynx Paws

Effect: Allows you to move and run more quietly. The sound of your footsteps will not carry as far.

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Watson (Northwest of Kabuki)

Cyberpunk 2077‘s bugs can make stealth gameplay more difficult than it should be, but you can negate the impact of those technical shortcomings somewhat with this piece of Cyberware that greatly reduces the noise you make.

Mantis Blades

Effect: Mantis Blades allow you to slice and dice your enemies with swift, deadly slashes. They also unlock the ability to leap towards a target and deal massive damage.

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Watson (Northside, Northwest of Kabuki, North of Kabuki)

Granted, Mantis Blades aren’t actually your “best in slot” option, but they’re cool enough to pursue if you don’t intend on regularly using anything else that would occupy the same slot.

Memory Boost

Effect: Defeating an enemy instantly recovers 2 cyberdeck RAM units.

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Watson (Northside)

This isn’t the flashiest ability, but it does make it much easier to pursue more aggressive hacking builds. Even those who only occasionally use hacking might be able to get some mileage out of this one.

Microgenerator

Effect: When your Health drops to 15%, release an electroshock that deals damage equal to 20% of the target enemy’s max Health.

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Watson (Northside)

Your health drops fast in Cyberpunk 2077, so you might as well make the most of it. While generally useful, this implant is particularly effective at harder difficulty levels.

Militech “Falcon” Sandevistan

Effect: Activate to slow time by 70% for 20 seconds. While active, Crit Chance +20%, Crit Damage +35%, and Damage +15% (30 second cooldown).

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Heywood

This is absolutely one of the best pieces of Cyberware in the game for any combat builds. The effect is powerful enough on its own, but it’s that surprisingly generous 30-second cooldown that makes this a real game-changer.

Monowire

Effect: The Monowire charges when equipped but not used in combat. Attacks with a charged wire deal bonus damage based on the charge level. Charge level and bonus damage dealt decline with each attack.

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Watson (Northside, Northwest of Kabuki, North of Kabuki)

This unique piece of equipment is somewhat difficult to understand, but it can be incredibly useful for stealth players looking to perform burst damage attacks in a pinch. It’s also pretty handy for “fist” melee players as this item’s effectiveness is based on the Body and Cool attributes rather than blades.

Projectile Launch System

Effect: The Projectile Launcher allows you to unleash various powerful projectiles, dealing various types of damage as well as causing explosions and applying status effects.

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Watson (Northside, Northwest of Kabuki, North of Kabuki)

It may not be the most practical upgrade in Cyberpunk 2077, but in terms of fun and the “cool” factor, this is absolutely one of the best pieces of Cyberware in the game. You may even find that this implant greatly increases your damage output when used effectively.

Reinforced Tendons

Effect: Press “Jump” while in midair to perform a double jump.

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Watson (Northside, Northwest of Kabuki, North of Kabuki)

The other major leg implant in the game allows you to perform a quick double-jump. It doesn’t have quite as much upside as the ability offered by Fortified Ankles, but its a little easier to use in a pinch and generally makes navigation more fun.

Second Heart

Effect: Instantly restores 100% of max Health when your Health falls to 0 (120 second cooldown).

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Heywood

This implant is useful on its own, but it’s possible to use this as the core component of a build that makes it nearly impossible to die during typical combat situations. Even if you don’t pursue that style of play, this piece is one of the most valuable “safeguards” in the game.

Self-ICE

Effect: Negates effects of enemy quickhacks (45 second cooldown).

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Watson (Northside)

This surprisingly cheap piece of Cyberware certainly isn’t the most exciting implant in the game, but it does eliminate one of the most annoying mechanics in Cyberpunk 2077. You should certainly consider this if you’re looking for utility implants to fill empty slots.

Smart Link

Effect: Allows you to use the smart-targeting module in Smart weapons. Directly links the user’s optical implant to the weapon’s system, offering real-time data-tracking.

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Watson (Northside, Northwest of Kabuki, North of Kabuki)

Honestly, this effect should probably be activated by default (or be tied to a perk), but if you want to be able to properly use Cyberpunk 2077‘s smart weapons, you’re going to have to install this at some point. You can obviously skip this one if you’re focusing on melee or hacking builds.

Subdermal Armor

Effect: Increases Armor by 200.

Where to Get It: Ripperdoc in Watson (Northwest of Kabuki)

Yes, this is the most “boring” piece of Cyberware that we’re recommending on this list, but that doesn’t mean it’s not valuable. Not only is the extra armor useful in all combat situations, but having extra armor makes it easier to choose clothing based on looks rather than slight defensive boosts.

The rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which chronic inflammation can damage the cartilage causing pain and stiffness. The post-traumatic arthritis is caused by a serious hip fracture or injury which damages the cartilage. In all these cases a total hip replacement surgery is an effective procedure that can relieve your pain, increase your motion and help you back to enjoy everyday activities

Preparing for hip & knee surgery

Doctors recommend cutting back on unhealthy lifestyle choices prior to hip replacement surgery, like smoking and alcohol consumption. Getting enough sleep can also recharge your body and help with the long hip replacement surgery or knee surgery recovery road that lies ahead. This is especially important when you consider this direct quote from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare: “1 in 10 people with osteoarthritis 45 & over self-reported poor health”.

A raised toilet seat will simplify the sitting and standing associated with this bathroom task. A grab rail can also improve safety in the bathroom.

● Getting help – arrange for a friend or a family member to help you at home with everyday tasks like cooking, laundry or shopping for the first 14 days of hip or knee surgery recovery. Gentle and safe exercises can also help to encourage healing faster. Ensure that the exercise you choose to do is approved by your doctor before you start.

I decided it was time. There are a few things that I want to do in the future that all require me to have had a look at the first game in this apparently never-ending series. I had an original plan to cover the game in a single entry, as I’ve typically done with console games, but it’s clear to me now that to do it justice, the entry would have to be the size of small novel. Keep in mind that I’m fitting this in between my regularly scheduled titles, so I’ll cover as much as I can in this initial entry, you can all tell me what I’m doing wrong, and I can pick it up again at a future date. We’ve seen eight Japanese RPGs prior to 1987 on this blog, representing a fairly wide range of subgenres, including a text/RPG hybrid (The Dragon and Princess, 1982), a Wizardry-inspired first-person dungeon crawler (The Black Onyx, 1984), and a number of console-style action games with limited RPG elements (Dragon Slayer, 1984; Deadly Towers, 1986). While these games don’t share much, they do have characteristics common for a genre in its toddler years–lots of unevenness, stumbling, and experimentation along ultimately unproductive paths.

To me, 1987 feels like the first year that Japanese RPGs learned how to walk. (We do have to keep in mind that there are more than 40 untranslated games between 1982 and 1986 that might change my mind.) The Ancient Land of Ys, Sorcerian, and now Final Fantasy feel like whole products in the way that their predecessors do not. That doesn’t mean that they’re original; Final Fantasy, as we’ll see, is mostly a composite of several American RPGs, particularly Wizardry, Ultima, and Phantasie. But when borrowing elements from a previous title, there’s a difference between doing it blindly and doing it craftily. In playing most clones, you get the sense that the developer of the clone didn’t know any better; that he included an element because he couldn’t think of an alternative; that he didn’t have enough experience with the scope of previous RPGs to truly understand when something works and why. Final Fantasy is something of the opposite. It strikes me as a product of someone who has really analyzed the best American RPGs and has deliberately created a composite of their strongest characteristics. In fact, I’m willing to venture that at the time, it might not have been possible to create a better console RPG experience. It exemplifies the simplicity that we have come to expect from a console of the era. It doesn’t bog itself down in character creation or in a long backstory, and it requires minimal preparation in terms of reading a manual. It is the very essence of plug-and-play. As I started playing, I initially saw its approach as an object of criticism, but as the hours wore on, I began to understand. The game has a relatively detailed backstory; it just chooses to feed it to the player in small bites. It comes with an 84-page manual, but the first two pages cover everything you need to know to get started (the rest quite literally walk you through the entire first half of the game). Its one-line dialogues seem less like a limitation of the platform and more like an effort not to exhaust the player with too much text. I don’t always like the result, but I admire its success in what it wanted to achieve. ��

The only backstory you get.

So little has been provided on the backstory so far that I’m not even sure how to summarize it. A single-screen opening text crawl says that the world is in trouble (for some reason), but a prophecy says that four warriors will set things right. Enter your four warriors, “each holding an ORB.” That’s enough to start you off, but with every town and castle you visit, you learn just a little bit more. Not in the way–I hasten to add–that you learn more about the main plot of, say, The Legacy or Ultima VII. Those games have mysteries that you slowly unravel, but at least it’s perfectly clear from the beginning who you are and what your basic mission is. In Final Fantasy, on the other hand, you get the sense that your own characters know more than you do. After all, they each have an ORB. Why? Where did they get them? Why do people keep calling them “Warriors of Light”? Character creation allows you to select four characters from six classes: fighter, thief, black belt, red mage, white mage, and black mage. Aside from the “black belt,” these seem mostly inspired by Wizardry, with the white mage taking the role of the priest (mostly defensive and healing magic), the black mage taking the role of the mage (mostly offensive spells), and the red mage taking the role of a bishop (able to cast both). The inclusion of a “black belt” class made me chuckle with remembrance of a time in the 1980s when “black belts” were considered the ne plus ultra of martial artists, and you had several games of that title and movies with black belt protagonists. And then dweeby kids we went to high school with started getting black belts, ruining the entire illusion, and we started worshiping more nebulous figures like ninjas whose designations couldn’t be bestowed by the local used car dealer running a “dojo” on the side.

Each character is assigned starting attributes in strength, agility, intelligence, vitality, and luck, this list coming from Wizardry but lacking “wisdom.” From these are calculated a variety of derived statistics: damage done, hit percentage, damage absorbed, and evade percentage.

Once you’ve selected a party, you’re locked in for the game. I selected poorly. I wasn’t paying attention to what the manual said about the different mage classes, and I went with a fighter, a thief, a black belt, and a white mage. A couple hours later, I realized that I really wanted two mages, or at least a red mage instead of a white. The thief doesn’t seem terribly useful–there really isn’t any thieving to be done in the game–and if I could do it over I would have replaced him with a black mage. My selections mean that I miss out on most of the offensive magic in the game. However, each class later gets a “prestige class” upgrade that introduces some more magic options.

Gameplay begins outside a castle with an attached town (it looks like six attached towns, in fact, but the town icons all lead to the same locations). Towns have shops that sell weapons, armor, spells, resurrection, and potions and magic items, the selection getting more advanced as the game progresses. Inns are one of the few places where you can legally save the game (like Zelda, the cartridge came with an internal battery), the others being a variety of temporary magical structures (tents, cabins, and houses) that you can purchase from the magic shop. (Inns restore all hit points while these magic items restore only some.) Either way, save points are limited, and you have to pay to save.

Towns also have about half a dozen wandering NPCs, each of whom deliver a sentence or two when you approach them. From the ones in this town, I learn that someone named Lukahn foretold our arrival, and that he has gone to “join his colleagues at Crescent Lake”; the princess has been kidnapped; and the city of Pravoka lies to the east.

I get a hint from an NPC north of two magic shops.

At the nearby castle, we learn that Princess Sara has been kidnapped by someone named “Garland,” a former knight until something happened. (If the name seems familiar, it’s also the name of the duke in Zeliard.) He took the princess to a temple to the northeast. For a while, I’m dumb enough to think that this will be the main plot of the game.

The king asks for my help. I suppose we’ll find out who “Lukahn” is later.

So far, we’ve encountered a character system similar to Wizardry (classes, attributes, prestige classes, leveling) and a top-down exploration system with towns and NPC dialogue similar to Ultima, but outside we run into combat that couldn’t come from anywhere but Phantasie. Enemies face the party on the combat screen (left-to-right here, instead of top-down). You specify an action for each character–attack, cast a spell, use an item, drink a potion, or flee–and the game threads your actions with the attackers’ based on an underlying initiative score. As each character acts, his icon leaps forward and has an accompanying animation. This is cute at the beginning but (like Phantasie) soon just adds unnecessary time to the encounter. So does the silly dance that the kids do when they’ve won a battle.

Unlike Phantasie, there isn’t much consideration of enemy rank–any character can attack any enemy. There is a consideration of character rank. The character appearing first gets about 50% of the attacks, the next 25%, then 15%, then 10%. It’s thus important to keep the strongest, most well-armored character at the top. This is particularly annoying because certain enemy effects, like stunning and poison, plus fleeing battle, seems to cause the party to spontaneously re-arrange, and you spend a lot of wasted time untangling them. The magic system is a hybrid. Final Fantasy uses spells with names and effects similar to Phantasie, with numbers indicating relative power, though all shortened to four characters for space reasons. So instead of “Healing 2” and “Fireflash 3,” we get HEL2 and FIR3. There are four spells per level and spellcasters can only learn three of them, which must create real agony for the red mage, who is mixing white and black magic. Anyway, instead of Phantasie‘s magic points system, Final Fantasy uses the “slots” system of Wizardry, in which each character gets a certain number of spell allocations per level, all of them restored when you rest. I find the combat system fun and relatively tactical when exploring dungeons (where you can’t save or rest) and facing boss-level enemies. You have to carefully ration your spell slots, strategically use fleeing to preserve your resources, cast the right spells for the foes you’re facing, and find the right balance between concentrating your attacks and spreading them out, so that you kill the most powerful foes as quickly as possible, but don’t waste extra attacks on creatures killed by an earlier character.

In general, however, combat becomes exhausting quickly. Both outdoors and in dungeons, you get yanked into combat (it’s always a surprise; you don’t see enemies on the screen) every 5 to 10 seconds of travel time. As long as you keep an eye on health levels, most of the outdoor combats are of negligible danger, so all they do is sap time. NESTopia comes with an “alternate speed” mode that you can activate by holding down the TAB key, but it only goes to a maximum of 240%, not the “warp” of other emulators. So I spend a lot of time just holding TAB and mashing my way through combat. The game is pretty relentless in its generation of “random” encounters, too. If it decides that in 8 seconds, you’re going to face 3 ogres, and they’re going to get a surprise attack, there’s no fiddling that you can do to save yourself, not even using emulator save states. You can’t pause and wait until they pass like you can in Dragon Warrior because their appearance is based on movement rather than time. Duck into a town and the clock happily pauses until you leave again and then resumes. And the list of numbers generated for combat must be different than those generated for other purposes, because you can’t avoid the encounter by, say, casting a spell to force it to use the next set of numbers for a different purpose. You’re going to face those 3 ogres, and that’s that–unless you want to save and shut down the machine. There isn’t a lot of reason to avoid any one specific encounter anyway, but I thought it was amusing how futile it is to even try.

Multi-level dungeons, where you cannot rest or save for long periods, are hard to survive without grinding.

You don’t want to avoid encounters anyway because you need the experience. This is an extremely grindy game. I’m aware that some party combinations–four fighters?–might lessen the amount of grind early in the game, but overall it’s clearly designed with grinding in mind. The manual even tells you to go grind (or, in its words, “power-up by battling”) in strategic locations. You not only need grinding for leveling but also for gold, as each new town offers more expensive weapons, armor, and spells. Easily half the time I’ve spent on this game so far has been spent grinding.

Leveling up happens immediately after the battle in which you cross the threshold, and like Wizardry, you get boosts in a random selection of attributes. The frequency of leveling has thus far been satisfying enough.

That leaves the game’s plot, which has been distressingly linear for this session, at least. What looks like a relatively open world map artificially channels the player through the use of terrain. At the beginning, the player can’t leave a small strip of land between the castle and the temple being occupied by Garland. Finishing the first mission is a simple matter of entering the temple and finding Garland in the first room. He attacks alone and dies quickly; the random monsters roaming throughout the temple are harder than him.

The princess is freed and returns to the castle, and one of the nice things about the game is that NPC dialogue in the castle and nearby town changes to reflect her rescue. The king and queen now offer thanks, and other NPCs who had lines about the princess have substitutes instead. Even in its later editions, Ultima didn’t often make such concessions to the changing game world, and it’s one of the several small signs that more care and craft went into Final Fantasy than the typical RPG of the 1980s. In gratitude for her rescue, the princess gives the party a lute. The king has a bridge built from the land you’ve been able to explore to the main continent, extending the party’s range. He also tells the party to “make the ORBS shine again,” which is another clue as to the developing plot. As the party crosses the bridge, the title screen finally appears, suggesting that the game so far has been a prologue. A few text windows add here that the ORBS used to shine with light 2,000 years ago.

The party next encounters a witch named Matoya living in a cave to the north. She demands the return of her crystal. If you talk to one of her magically animated brooms, you get a secret key combination that brings up a map of the world with the party’s location and the locations of places to visit clearly annotated.

Kids may not mind role-playing kids but probably also don’t mind role-playing adults. Adults, meanwhile, probably don’t want to role-play kids. I don’t think I’ve heard from a single person who was an adult in the 1980s and started on the Nintendo. This is not true, of course, about personal computers.

Set Dungeons

The user interface has been updated to better explain tier completion requirements

With this, the basic completion tier must be finished within the given time limit

The time limit to complete a Set Dungeon has been increased to 5 minutes

Set dungeon monsters are now tracked on the mini-map when the dungeon begins

All Basic Tier monster kill requirements have been lowered

Greater Rifts

Players who die in solo Greater Rifts can now choose to immediately resurrect. When choosing this option, the time remaining on your death timer will be removed from the remaining Greater Rift time and your cooldowns will be advanced by the same amount.

Bug Fixes

Fixed an issue which sometimes prevented players from completing the “Clear the Forgotten Well” bounty
