The most fascinating tornado in history for me definitely has to be the 2013 El Reno tornado. One of the biggest wedge tornadoes in recorded history being almost 3 miles wide at 2.6 miles in width

Another interesting fact about tornadoes is sometimes an indicator of a tornado incoming is things becoming eerily calm and the sky turning a vibrant shade of green

Also other interesting fact and a pretty good survival tip, if you’re looking directly at a tornado and it appears to not be moving, that means it’s heading directly at you and you need to seek shelter immediately

Storm chasing is one of the most fascinating hobbies and jobs that someone could have and I would honestly love to do it someday. Granted I would probably just do it for photography and not science because I’m not that good in that field. Also I live in an area that will most likely never get a tornado so that’s something for future me to do

I actually used to be really terrified of tornadoes as a child and learning about them in school because I only knew of the damage and devastation they caused. But now I have a new found fondness of this phenomenon, one because it’s an absolute wonder to witness this beast of nature, and two I just think they’re cool

Granted I understand that tornadoes while they can be cool looking, they cause massive devastation and death and injury and my heart goes out to anyone who has experienced going through a tornado and I know it could be very traumatic for people

That’s why I also look up to storm chasers as well. They’re helpful in ways of helping detect the possibility of tornados coming and give people the opportunity to prepare for when disaster strikes. And they’re out they’re in the front lines collecting this data up close and personal so we can know how to better work through these disasters of nature and I really admire them for that

Did you know that bees are sentient? They’re emotional little guys, and we discovered that fairly recently because their brains are so small they needed sophisticated technology to be studied.

people fear bees because they’re aggressive sometimes, but aggression is just an emotion right? They can be relaxed enough you can pet them, they can be sad or stressed or happy ..etc they’re capable of problem solving, math, thinking, and feeling. They can recognize and remember faces. Some bees are social some are not. They can feel an array of emotions and even sometimes develop disorders like PTSD.

Okay, so, bit by bit. A thing that fascinates me about bees is swarming, or relocate, when a honeybee colony leaves the hive and intends to relocate,. They send a select number of scout bees to go inspect potential places. If a scout bee likes a spot she comes back and performs a wiggle dance that can communicate the location of the spot. Another group or bees goes to inspect the spot and if they like it they come back to dance, and so on until they all agree on a spot. It’s basically a democracy which is just very cool.

Another way bees are interesting is that they can dream as I mentioned above. This was discovered because scientists noticed they’d move their antennas the same way they would when they’re flying or communicating, isn’t that cute? ( btw, did you know scientists can develop ptsd from studying bees because they get attached to them? )

Recently, in the bee world, there has been a problem called Colony Collapse Disorder. This is connected to the threat of extinction the bees are facing as it indicates how an entire honeybee colony can die in one season :( Mainly, we suspect pesticides to be the cause of this, but scientists argue that their emotional states could have played a role. It’s suspected that Industrialized agriculture causes so much psychological stress and thus…

-what common/uncommon fear do they have?

Cats and cat like monsters. She was attacked by a feral alleycat as a child and has pretty deep trauma over it, as well as a few facial scars, though they’re faded. This is sad cause I think she would really benefit from the kind of love a cat provides, so she had to get the next best thing (astarion)

Other than that, her fear of commitment and ending up trapped in a boring life like her mother and father were while she was growing up drives her restlessness and wandering spirit. She’s broken a few hearts and has regrets about that, but she can’t allow herself to get attached to anything until she thinks she’s literally a day away from a horrible death. Further into the story, she starts to fear their feelings even more as they grow, and she only admits to herself that she’s in love literally literally right after the cazador fight, when the words force themselves out of her mouth while she’s trying to talk astarion down, the fear of losing him superseding the fear of having him in the first place. It’s all very dramatic and romantic and utterly ridiculous. Shadowheart will never let her forget it

- what’s a pet peeve of theirs

People trying to put her in a position of power and lauding her as a hero. No, she’s not going to kiss your baby or sign your armor, fuck off and let her enjoy her drink in peace. No, Just because she dealt with one outlaw who provoked her in your settlement doesn’t mean she’d make a good sheriff, find someone else.

-3 bedroom items

She travels doesn’t have a set bedroom, but in her tent you’d find:

random humanoid skulls, she just thinks they’re neat

a jar of all purpose salve she learned how to make from her brief stint as an apprentice in an apothecary, made of propopolis jelly olive oil and a little honey, a few of its many functions include ye olde Neosporin, moisturizer, sunblock and lube

-what do they notice first in a person?

Joke answer: Tits or ass, depending on the asset. Serious answer: clothing, hair and eyes in that order.

- on a scale of 1-10 what’s their pain tolerance

9 or ten for physical pain tolerance, has done surgery on herself while conscious before. However, she has limits, like falling two stories in plate armor and having most of the bones in her body broken and their face getting scratched to bits by gremiskchas. Emotionally though, I’d say about a 4. She hates having feelings

-fight or flight

Flight if they think she’s going to die no matter what, but their also very cocky and will overestimate her chances of winning 7 times out of 10

-big family?

Grew up as an only child, but her mom comes from a very big extended family. 60% of the wood elf’s in baldurs gate are at least a little blood related to her, and while she isn’t exactly keeping in touch with any of them she recognizes them from family reunions. She was closest to her 3rd cousin Gina, who grew up to be lady flux, one of nine fingers’s bodyguards, but they had kind of a grudging relationship that peetered out once they became teenagers.

She thinks she might be related to halsin on her dads side, since they’re both so gigantic and apparently the ironwoods and silverboughs lived relatively close.

Her parents had another kid after she left home that she only finds out about after dragging herself onto their doorstep after the elder brain goes down. Her name is Violette and hope tries to be there for her more but her version of that is sending presents on her birthday and a visit every 3-4 years. She functions as a cool aunt to her when she does come by.

She’s also never having kids of her own. It’s not that she hates them necessarily, it’s just that’s she’d be the ultimate deadbeat. Both her and her partner are sterile, her via magical tube tying and astarion by virtue of being dead (we’re not doing breaking dawn here)

-what animal best fits her

WYLD STALLYNS (insert bill and Ted guitar riff) no but seriously she was meant to roam free and ungovernable across the countryside. Their a total horse girl. She hasn’t had a horse for a few years since her last one Marianne died, but she’ll get a new one soon enough

-smell they hate?

Rotten food, she thinks it’s a shame that it goes to waste. She doesn’t mind decomposition all that much though.

-Have they broken any bones?

You don’t know the half of it. She’s broken most of her bones at least once, and then learned the hard way that healing touch and cure wounds doesn’t automatically set them. Without relying on her gods power, she’s somewhere between a gruff frontier doctor and a back alley surgeon, so she can set a bone ok but it will hurt.

-how would a stranger describe them

Strikingly tall and handsome, confident and steady, but at the same time very closed off from people.

-night owl or morning bird?

Definitely a morning bird but also there’s not really a difference?. As an elf she only needs a few hours of meditation, so she’ll go to bed at 10 and wake up at 2 every day to bathe, work out and do her laundry before everyone else gets up. On one of these nights early on she saw astarion chowing down on the boar but she decided not to mention it. Post game she gets accustomed to trancing during the day to maximize the night.

-what’s a flavor they hate and a flavor they love

Love: wild raspberries and cherries, Her blood tastes like raspberry liquor, sweet and tart with an acidic punch.

Hate: about the furthest a picky eater but never liked oatmeal, the texture and the taste puts her off eating for the rest of the day.

She’s also a fan of brown liquors and spiced ale’s, is neutral on red wine and hates white and pink wines a burning passion bc even though she has a strong constitution, a single glass will make her loopy and way too honest about her feelings.

-hobbies?

She’s picked up a ton of weird skills and hobbies over the years on her travels from apprenticeships and trial and error, but she’s particularly fond of embroidery. She started sewing because as a tall broad and relatively busty gender non conforming afab, it was hard to find reasonably priced masculine clothing that fit her body right. That grew into a self taught love of sewing honed over the decades. Her stitching resembles blackwork the closest but in a free moving and fun way. Astarion and her really bonded over this, and they’ll steal each others clothing and leave each other little messages through their mending.

-how would they react to a suprise party?

Not well. She rolls with the punches, but she isn’t a fan of big events. Literally only karlach can get away with it without getting yelled at.

-messy or neat handwriting

Messy, barely legible

-two common emotions?

Wanderlust and yearning (followed by immediate denial of feelings)

-favorite fabric?

Linen. Easy to wash, lightweight , and easy to dye and embroider. She’s also a fan of leather for its durability (and it’s cool factor, her devil may care vagabond image is highly curated) and wouldn’t say not to a nice brocade

-accent?

Very informal, she doesn’t have a baldurian accent anymore so it’s kind of an intoxicating mess of all the languages she’s learned and places she’s spent a significant amount of time in. I imagine speech patters and tones sounding like something like a cross between bones McCoy from Star Trek and wolverine from the x men movies, very gruff and dry and serious but also cocky and playfully dangerous when she wants to be. And the dirty talk? Whew, out of this world

Writing for Nanbaka again, yay! Keeping with the grand plan, I used this prompt here for some headcanons. This time, I used a spin a wheel pick-a-name thing to decide the character and hope you guys will enjoy these headcanons for Musashi!

Fancy or casual?

His clothing has become a lot more casual as he aged because as a child and a teen, Musashi preferred a more formal style of clothing and took pride in looking his best. It wasn’t until being sent to prison that his clothing and overall style became more casual and relaxed.

Closet or dresser?

Musashi would prefer a closet, where there’s a combination of room to hang things so that they don’t get wrinkled or to put things that can be folded on shelves. His closet would tend to be very organized and possibly organized by the weight of the fabric so that he could easily tell what to grab for the weather.

Hot or cold?

Because of his excessive heat, cold foods heat up or melt easily if he handles them too much and because of that, he tends to prefer warm or hot meals. In terms of weather, he prefers colder weather because his body temperature is already so warm that hot weather causes him to feel a bit sick.

Meat or veggies?

A mixture of both is ideal, in Musashi’s opinion, but if he had to pick, he’d rather go vegetarian and give up meat entirely than give up vegetables.

One pillow or multiple?

Multiple pillows is a goddamn luxury, in Musashi’s opinion, or so he’s discovered after life as a prisoner. He’ll happily take multiple pillows over one any day, as he really likes good neck and head support to keep his shoulders and back from becoming stiff and sore when he wakes up.

Organized or messy?

Very organized. Not quite obsessively so but he’s always been a pretty neat individual and being blinded has made a good amount of organization a necessity for him to live as normal a day-to-day life as he can.

Games or books?

Musashi is actually a fairly big reader. He loves books and has since he was a child, devouring them fairly quickly. He’s not too finicky about the genres he reads either. He’ll switch genres fairly regularly, just to keep from getting too bored with any one thing.

Hide and watch or stand up and fight?

While his younger self wasn’t much of a fighter, the death of his parents and the ensuing torture at the hands of the Man with the Scar left Musashi a very different person, someone who was a lot more angry and violent. He still retains a lot of that stand and fight mentality but is working on resisting it more and not giving into that temptation following his fight with Jyugo.

Shy or social?

He was a fairly social child who became a shy teenager and adult. He struggles quite a bit with social anxiety, to be honest, but he genuinely wants to overcome that and make friends.

Soda or juice?

Musashi actually doesn’t much care for soda. The fizz just doesn’t feel great on his tongue and it’s very sweet to him so he prefers juice, but only actual fruit juice and not the overly sugared fruit juice drinks like Hawaiian Punch or Kool-Aid.

Handheld or console?

Neither. Because of his lack of sight, video games are kind of hard for him to master, though he’s willing to try them. They’re not things he seeks out on his own though, that’s for sure.

Light or dark?

Musashi prefers the light. Even without being able to see it, it’s a different feeling on his skin than that dark and he’s happier when it’s light outside.

Scary or happy?

Happy, please. This man has had more than enough of scary, sad, or horrific things in his life.

Movies or restaurants?

Both! He does like classic films, getting into them early on as a child but he also enjoys a good meal out, either alone or with company.

Car or bus?

Buses and other public transport actually make Musashi really nervous and unsettled feeling. He prefers a car or to walk, if at all possible.

Carpet or tile?

Tile feels better to him. It’s always slightly cool on his feet and smooth in texture. He doesn’t really care what it looks like, but feeling wise, it’s always superior to him.

Love or wealth?

Musashi grew up fairly wealthy. His parents weren’t hard up for money by any means and he knows both what it’s like to live in a fair amount of luxury and what it’s like to do without and he’s been able to live both ways without too much difference to him. Living without any love or affection though is really hard for him and he’d take reliable love from someone over money any day.

Markers or coloured pencils?

Coloured pencils are his preference. They feel better in his hand and, back when he could see, he enjoyed the wider variety of colours they came in compared to most marker packs.

Independent or dependent?

After the death of his parents, Musashi became so used to being alone and having to survive on his own that independence was something he learned quick and he’s still quite independent but naturally, he is a more dependent person who functions best with other people in his life and day to day routines.

Hat or necklace?

Musashi actually has a nonstandard sized head and has quite a bit of trouble finding hats that properly fit him, so he’d take a necklace over a hat for that reason alone.

Poster or calendar?

Most posters are meaningless to him after losing his sight, but he does have a Braille calendar that he uses. He likes knowing what day it is because it’s easy to lose track of that in prison.

Pain or death?

Death. He’s been through pain, over and over again. So many times, and it’s still so much a possibility of that happening again because of his unique abilities. Because of that and because of his past, there is a small part of Musashi that seeks and wants the release of death and the opportunity to be back with his parents again.

Science or math?

While he studied and worked hard and he is quite good at math, Musashi prefers science, finding it the more fascinating of the two topics.

Shower or bath?

He overheats in the bath if in there for too long but there’s nothing quite like an ice-cold shower to get Musashi’s blood flowing and his mood lifted.

Socks or slippers?

Does he have to choose? Honest to God, if Musashi could, he’d walk around all day, every day in just his bare feet as he doesn’t really much like socks or slippers. His feet sweat badly in them and then it stinks and it’s just not good for anybody.

Chips or crisps?

He calls them chips, being German.

Secretive or open?

For a long time, Musashi was very secretive, really keeping his feelings and thoughts and experiences locked up tight in his mind. He’s really working hard on becoming more open and honest with others and with himself.

Friendship or romance?

Honestly, at this point in his life, while he wouldn’t turn down romance, he’d much prefer friendship. And even with romance, Musashi would prefer a romance that evolved from an existing friendship rather than just jumping into dating someone.

Talent or skill?

Talent, to Musashi, is something you’re born with and don’t have to work hard for while skills are developed and things that you have to put effort into, so he finds skills more impressive.

But basically in last episode season 2 when they’re picking someone to “die” it’s also the boat episode you know? And. I mean everything aside that’s an incredible episode, everyone is in a funny hat, gratuitous Gerri feet shots, Greg toe nail stuff. But I just like. I don’t know they effectively use water to let you know that shits going down. It’s just like. They put so much work into recurring themes and motifs just to set a vibe like. Agh! Another cool thing about that episode is that Marcia’s absence is mentioned early on and kind of brushed off. But later when logan tells Kendall it’s him he mentions talking to Marcia about the Incas and they have this conversation about child sacrifice and logan kind of takes on this belief of like “it’s evil it’s brutal so so bad” and Marcia says you know “what could you kill that you loved so much it would make the sun come back” or something . And. It’s like. It kind of is very revealing for logan because he chose not to invite Marcia because he knew she would tell him it had to be one of his kids. And he doesn’t want to! And it’s interesting because you can’t really tell if he “doesn’t want to” because he loves them or if he just kind of has a general moral affiliation to the idea that it’s “savage” to throw them under the bus. And if he does love them it’s like he just doesn’t love them enough to not actually do it. Like he can love them as much as he wants but he’s still ushered them into the slaughterhouse like. Because logan is smart he knows when he can and can’t get away with doing exactly what he wants, or maybe he really does have a choice and he just doesn’t value Kendall as much as he values anyone else. Because we know at this point Kendall is pretty much useless like he’s been neutered on account of little boy murder so maybe logan just throws him off I don’t know. Nrpi 😂

Succesion is really really good at flagging what’s happening by using repetitive motifs and whatnot but I. Gah I hate it cause I think it’s a show you definitely have to watch twice and I feel bad cause likes asking someone to watch a. Show once is already such a. today I’m choosing violence (cause i'm tired of poor characterization of characters and the idolization of characters that are plain)

I’m gonna say if “being kind” or "they're so cool" are the only character traits you find interesting or that you love-

It may be time to accept that you enjoy a boring character (which is fine)

If being able to fight, or save people or have the strength/courage to go on, is the only trait they have that’s “interesting.”

Ask yourself why.

Arguably MOST characters are kind, are able to fight (to some capacity), want to save people and and are literally written in stories to have the capacity to “go on,” (unless they are killed)

Why are these the character traits you decided to go with? Are they admirable? Sure… but also name another few characters in the same piece of media that would do the exact same things?

Oh there are SEVERAL characters that have those same character traits?

Okay- So what makes your character interesting then?

I’ll wait.

So I see, you’re struggling to find anything else?

Yeah

There’s nothing inherently wrong with liking boring characters.

But acknowledging that your “fave” character has a shell like personality is good critical thinking. And sure maybe you don’t want to dissect media in this way. You want to be able to mindlessly enjoy content. That’s fine.

But when people ask you really- why do you like this character so much?

Don’t let your answer be- because they’re good.

Because when you say that, I just know that there’s literally nothing else about that character. No flaws, no interesting facets. No internal struggles. You picked a Mary Sue. A character with nothing wrong with them as to self insert or to find comfort in.

now- this isn't to say that "being good or kind," CAN'T be interesting because it can! when you use a subversive trait to counteract the "kind" trait.

if you're presented a cold, rude character that repeatedly is written to be "maybe the villain," but then you're presented with this new information of, "oh they're actually really nice, or did a really kind thing to (blank)" that's interesting, you wonder WHY, you wonder how come? and if it's well written, you can see that the character can be truly fleshed out with a personality and moral ambiguity.

where does this character, really lie?

a good character i find would actually be levi from aot to showcase a large range of ambiguous morality as well as showcasing a possible range of actions that COULD seem as contradictory, but REALLY, what they're showcasing is that despite the action going against what is canonically written for his character; it's deeper than that-

-it's showing/proving something.

from the very beginning there are approximately 3 traits that i can showcase that are projected into this character. these are core values or parts of his writing that are meant to show who is he

(also spoilers? but aot is old af so whatever)

1. Levi is a very clean/neat person

we've been presented with several notions of his cleanliness, that he hates being dirty and would go out of his way to clean things even in battle. keeping his blades clean immediately after using them. this is seen as a clear personality trait. this is something that is a part of his character, this is not going to change.

2. Levi is cold and standoffish towards others

now i'm going to connect the first trait and the second trait in the exact same moment. levi has been shown to not have many friends, he doesn't get along with people well and chooses not to.

in a single moment, we have something that goes AGAINST what we've been presented.

there is a dying soldier that is being comforted by someone else, and in his last moments levi is asked to help. levi doesn't NEED to help the dying soldier. but he does so because of his standing. but also because he chooses to.

he takes the dying soldier's hand (which is dirtied by blood) holding his hand as levi gives him comforting last words. words that make it so that he can die comfortably. that his life wasn't in vain. that he can finally go in peace.

(these are both things that he arguably doesn't want to do)

3. Levi is presented as having a "high sense of morality"

this is a pretty quick one to go against actually, levi is presented as one of the strongest. and is often allowed to lead and make decisions in split seconds. however- we are also presented with the idea of him not agreeing with his own decisions. he clearly says that he struggles with his own morality "my moral high ground has gone to shit" (im paraphrasing because i can't find the clip on youtube lol)

he chooses to do things because he feels as though it is the correct choice - EVEN IF IT ENDS IN DEATH. because of these outcomes, he is unsure of his own morals and choices and decisions and it affects him greatly.

these are very easy ways to showcase a character and give them range and to show that they are capable of being fleshed out in very simple ways.

these aren't hard concepts to grasp and can go EVEN further to flesh out characters and to showcase their personality and traits that aren't just THIS CHARACTER DOES THIS.

when i consume media- i take the time to read characters and try to understand their motivations, decisions and choices.

you DON'T HAVE TO- but when you come into spaces that are talking about characterizations of characters, why you like characters etc. and you do not want to engage in these types of conversations- then do not engage with it.

He prefers showers, more accessible, and just sits on the built in seat of his shower cause its fancy like that, he does his face wash first, and his hair last, usually hot and on the longer side, which is why he only does it every 4-7 days.

i don't have all the energy atm to explain my full headcanons but basically i had a fic AU set in a modern, non-fantastical universe where the osmp cast lived in this smaller quaint town and eventually o!Ranboo left to move into the city after a natural disaster event happened in the other town and caused her some trauma. her relationships are generally strained but are better with some people than others but inevitably she is able to find her way home. there's more to it than that but that was my idea hehe

poetry is so so so fucking healing seriously, and honestly like! any kind of writing is so important to keep regardless of whether it fits on this metric of "good/bad", like. it's coming from the heart and your experiences and these characters that you connect to (june sounds lovely by the way, <3) and that's what's most important. i've had to give myself a lot of grace with cough syrup about whether or not i was writing it perfectly because, yeah, the first couple of chapters are objectively on the shittier end compared to the rest of the fic. but what matters is that it conveyed what i wanted it to, and it gave me a way to spend that summer, and it meant a lot to me.

SW Suddenly-Omegaverse AU: Surrogacy, Worldbuilding, Obi-Mom

Truly the main irony of all this is that everyone considers Obi-Wan the Better Omega but Anakin is the one who's actually 👀👀👀 about pregnancy

Obi-Wan: I have the deepest respect for those who do it, but the idea of growing another person inside of me is weird and gross, no, thank you.

Meanwhile Anakin is like. Immediate baby fever. Someone actually approaches him like "hey... there are forms you can fill out to request an exception for pregnancy, and like... regulations" because he's that obvious about it.

I assume that if they've got safety nets for accidental pregnancies, then they're probably aware that there are people who want to do it on purpose? I feel like in an omegaverse where 'biological imperative to procreate' can be so much more intense, then maybe there's old precedent that stuck around even after suppressants got most of those hormones under better control.

Bit torn. Just know I want Anakin to Make Baby.

Great way to give up the baby as a parent because he'd still be able to see them once in a while but also like... it's not HIS kid, technically. He can be a cool uncle who happened to give birth, which is distant enough to not be 'attached,' but close enough that his Tatooine-raised 'must ensure family is safe whenever possible' background doesn't flip out. It helps that 'Core World Royalty' is like... a top-tier family to be raised in.

(It would have to be post-war because he probably shouldn’t be risking his life while very pregnant. He needs to be reminded of that sometimes.)

Bail/Breha is an alpha/alpha relationship and while a pregnancy is still possible,* it’s a whole lot more difficult, and that's on top of Breha's canon medical issues that resulted in her heart and lungs getting replaced.

* AFAB alphas can get pregnant, and AMAB omegas can inseminate, but the success rate on that angle is much lower than the 'traditional' alpha/omega roles, as is any attempt at reproduction outside rut/heat. They're low-fertility overall for the non-dominant aspect of their reproductive system, which... ha, Anakin and Obi-Wan try to get explanations for why the senary system works the way it does, but it's a very longform history lesson that comes down to 'idk this got cemented so long ago that nobody really knows why anymore.'

AKA "why do you title these roles male omega and female alpha instead of intersex omega and intersex alpha since both parties have both genitals."

Anakin is a surrogate and enjoys it and everything is fine and then like a year later he's accidentally pregnant with his own and Rex's kid, and nobody knows how to ask if it's actually an accident.

OH MAN i.... have to drive home. But I just had a thought about like. I always want to poke at Betas in A/B/O like are they “normal” or different from our standard or.... but ANYWAY assuming they have a pheromonal thing I just think it would be neat if betas had the ability to be the Bucket of Cold Water. Like if caught early enough, and with the caveat it’s not permanent, a beta could arrest a rut or heat in its tracks until a more ideal time. Like. They aren’t birth control. It plays nice with a popular but inaccurate dog breeding urban legend that female dogs will like, delay heat cycles? so that the bitches above them in pack hierarchy have first choice of mate selection. And I think in omegaverse it would be cool if that was a Bio Fact, and also historically enforced by the third designation. 2. It gives me an excuse to have betas have the Most Sensitive sense of smell because it’s their “job” to pick up on things before they go too far to be put on pause. 3. I’m just thinkin ‘bout a beta clone [...] just hovering around Obi-Wan because they found out how much stress his heat cycle causes and they’re like “okay cool I will help make sure it does Not”

I want to like a/b/o verses but betas niggle at me. I want to give them a hat and a Function that woulda helped before modern medicine.

I'm not sure how I feel about betas being able to delay heats, but I do like the idea of them having a more sensitive sense of pheromone smell than most. Most aliens assume it's omegas with the best sense of smell, and betas with the worst, but it's more complicated than that because they all specialize: Alphas are actually less attuned to pheromone smells, but more attuned to things that were useful back when humans were still a hunter-gatherer species. Omegas tend to be heightened towards danger smells like fire or aggression, and pheromones relating to children/care. Betas, as suggested above, are very sensitive to pheromone changes relating to mood and behavior of the community around them.

I like the idea that betas were historically the ones that ended up taking care children, unmated omegas, and so on during people's heats and ruts, because they kept their heads about themselves long enough to do things like cook and clean while someone was reeking of hormones. The checks and balances work out that betas may have lower fertility, but it makes them better able to support the network around them.

It works in with humanity's general collective history of thriving the most when working as a community.

Given that I decided that this is Jangobi, the clones might all subconsciously view Obi-Wan as Mom. Not intentionally, but, you know... Obi-Wan the not-evil stepmother. He doesn't know how he got into this situation, but he sure is here, and he sure as hell doesn't know how to get out.

Anakin overhears the clones calling Obi-Wan "mom" and just. The most judgmental eyebrow raise.... Mostly in the sense of "You never let me call you dad" "Thought you said you weren't anyone's parent." "Hey, hey, Obi-Wan. What the fuck."

BOBA. BOBA ABSOLUTELY CALLS OBI-WAN MOM WHENEVER POSSIBLE. IT'S DEEPLY FRUSTRATING.

Obi-Wan eventually manages to admit that he's uncomfortable with it at minimum because of the gendering the word has for him, can they at least use the neutral 'buir' instead?

Word spreads like fire, takes like two days max for everyone to switch.

is shirou a mary sue? the guy is universally well liked, cooks like a pro at 17, has the most op power from all fate (and arguably one of the most cool powers on media), nothing ever happens to him on the true/canon path of each route, he does many stupid things but no one cares 5 minutes later, other times like in salter vs rider he is just a tactical genius out of nowhere

he is not.

shirou is well-liked but he isn't particularly popular. he is known at school for being helpful and handy but otherwise not that many people are aching to get to know him or involve him in their lives. most people only know shirou very superficially. he is not sought after as a person, only as a handy man. there's a really neat scene at the beginning of hf1 where people are talking about shirou in the dojo and see that while he's earnest, hard-working, and talented, he's a bit odd and intense and that makes him a little difficult to approach casually. the only people who really like him are those who sit down and actually spend time with him. apart from the heroines of the story with whom he has time to develop a romantic bond, you don't see other girls falling head over heels for him. in fact, in hollow ataraxia the homurahara trio and mitsuzuri are quick to write him off as someone they are vehemently not interested in romantically whatsoever.

he only cooks like a pro because he had to teach himself to cook since he was 8. it's vital to understand that since kiritsugu became increasingly disabled and was utterly incapable of living as a normal human being, shirou was forced to grow up well before he was ready to take care of his adoptive father. he learned to cook, do the dishes, do the laundry, and clean the house because there were no other real adults in the house. shirou's domestic usefulness didn't come out of nowhere, it's a set of skills he took on out of necessity and came at the expense of his emotional growth.

shirou's power also isn't op. it's stated multiple times in the story how difficult it is for him to tap into it. he's not a natural mage with strong magical circuits, and neither does he have any real "useful" magical alignments that would make it easy for him to use conventional magecraft. every training session shirou has is a life-threatening act where he pushes his body and mind to the utmost limit for the low chance he might succeed at strengthening or projecting something. whenever he grabs hold of an ability that elevates his combat skills, it's either a) done with saber's help in the fate route, b) acquired as his soul inherits experience from his proximity to archer in ubw and receiving mana from rin, or c) obtained at the expense of the integrity of his mind and body as archer's arm starts to supplant his existence in heaven's feel. and even then, there's limits to what he can trace and project. he can't trace divine constructs normally as seen with ea, and his projections eat through his mana. think about what happens in heaven's feel too. every time he projects something with archer's arm he leaps closer to death because he can't handle the strain.

to say nothing ever happens to him in canon is also disingenuous. he doesn't die in a permanent sense, but take a moment to consider the amount of mental and physical pain he suffers that forces him to confront something about himself and change. did "nothing" happen when he faced gilgamesh and heracles with saber? is growing closer to her to find the best way to help her assert her personhood "nothing"? did "nothing" happen when he fought archer? is realizing the truth of your ideals and grasping the resolve to realize them anyway in a healthier and more self-aware manner "nothing"? did "nothing" happen when he fought heracles, saber alter, and kotomine? is saving your loved ones and claiming your life as your own after years of not seeing yourself as a human being to protect those dear to you so they too learn to love and accept themselves "nothing"?

take a moment to consider in what ways shirou is stupid that aren't contradicted by him being smart in others. shirou is socially inept and utterly incapable of asking for help because he is a traumatized teenager who doesn't know what a normal life is. he has few friends. he survived a fire. he is constantly trying to make up for being unable to rescue anyone in the calamity that destroyed his childhood. he constantly jumps in front of danger to save others for that very reason and refuses help because he doesn't want others to get hurt because of him until he learns to overcome that fear of being destroyed and seeing others be destroyed. he is dumb at being a person because he's never let himself be one. he is smart in a fight because he's at least been able to process his stress and trauma in a way that helps him rationalize his way out of a crisis.

i feel the need to stress that a protagonist having special qualities fit for the narrative isn't them being a mary sue. it's them simply being a main character with agency, a main character that is engaging and interesting. how boring do you think shirou and the story would be if he was really a shit-ass mcnobody with no talents, personality, qualities, or meaningful connections to the setting? he'd be no different from every other harem protag the cishet male audience can use as a self-insert. he is supposed to subvert ideas of masculinity by being domestic. he challenges conventional ideas of heroism by showing how his ideals are flawed and how important it is that he self-actualize.

shirou faces consequences for his inaction and inexperience multiple times too. saber gets frustrated because he won't (tell her why he really won't) fight and that causes a rift in their relationship he must fix with honesty and mutual understanding. shirou's inability to protect himself from hypnotic suggestion gets him kidnapped by caster and forces archer to rescue him, and in turn their shared stubbornness elevates their conflict to deadly levels until they're forced to fight to work out their differences. heaven's feel shows you how his unwillingness to forsake who he is to properly scold sakura and save her makes the situation worse when sakura loses faith that shirou will keep his promise to her until he decides he will fulfill it for both their sakes. people do care! saber cares when her master doesn't see eye to eye with her! rin cares that shirou is too willing to throw away his own life for others! archer cares that he is at risk of becoming that which archer can't forgive himself for being! sakura cares because seeing the man she loves come home bruised and bloodied every night is wrong! illya cares because he is her only true family! rider cares because if shirou can't be sakura's ally then she's as good as dead! everyone cares because shirou has to learn to care too, and he does!

i'm going to ask you to try to engage with media without trying to uncover flaws under rigid standards like this because all it does is keep you from properly understanding what is being shown to you. you cannot hope to judge a story and its characters for all their flaws or merits if this is how you approach things.

Grisha is the awkward white dad who tries too hard to accept you and says stuff like “Hey, like the new hairdo 😃👍🏾.” Whenever you come around. Bless his poor heart, at least he’s trying and you know he means well.

JEAN

Worships you and the ground you walk on like 24/7. He’s so in love with you and makes sure to let you know that on the daily multiple times. And he’s such an amazing lover and avoids doing cringey shit like calling you chocolate or Nubian queen goddess.

Hangs with your uncles and all the other black men in your family because he thinks he’s cool like that, but they don’t mind at all cause they love him.

His mom is the sweetest mother in law ever. She gets along so well with all the women in your family and they’re always swapping recipes with one another. One day time you and Jean pulled up for Christmas and she had a dish filled with collard greens on the table and they were good too.

He has two chains around his neck dedicated to you: one is your name and the other one is the date you two became official. You also wear his name around your neck and you have a ring with his initials on it.

Getting jewelry is something the two of you do together very often. Matter of fact, swap meets are his favorite place to go to in general and his mind was blown when you first took him to one.

Asks you to put his hair in French braids at least once a month because the process is so therapeutic for him. He loves laying his head on his lap and watching as you make his braids so neat and cute. But be careful though because he does like to “Can you braid my hair? 🥺” his way into some coochie.

Don’t brother teaching him how to braid because even if he does get the hang of it after a couple of sessions with you he’ll always request that you do his hair.

You two have random rap battles with each other alllll the time. It’s pretty split between who wins, but often you’ll call him out for trying to use lyrics from other artists.

CONNIE

Did y’all know me and Connie are blood cousins? Both his momma and daddy black and his full name on his birth certificate is Cornelius Demetrius Jones Springer, so take that as you will…

BUT REALLY, Connie fits right in with you and your culture that it’s nearly identical to dating someone the same race as you.

He has a fitted cap with your name sowed into it on the side with a cute heart right by it. It’s his go to hat and he points is out to everyone who doesn’t know about it.

Has most definitely dragged you along with him to go take one of those 2000’s-esque photoshoots with the airbrushed backgrounds. He even made the two of you dress alike and color coordinate because he’s extra like that and the photos are hanging all over your guy’s house. He carries around a mini version of his favorite picture in his wallet at all times.

You better not ever come around this man with messed up edges, visibly old braids, a too visible lace, etc because he will get on you bad and crack jokes about it the whole day because he’s a menace to society like that. No one besides him is allowed to do it though or he’ll get mad at them.

Do not ask this man to help you take down your braids unless you’re cutting them first because he will cut them crazy as hell and might even accidentally cut some of your real hair off too. He’s a master at dipping braids though, it’s something he takes pride in.

EREN

Literally a POWER COUPLE !

Eren will never have you out here looking wrong. The part on your lace is a little off? He’s telling your hairdresser to fix it! Thinks the hair you got looks too synthetic and shiny? He’s dropping big bucks to make sure you have some silky soft hair extensions.

Made you do him some baby hairs one day when he was wearing his signature ponytail as a joke, but now you’re obligated to slick up his edges for him at least once a week. He even has a silk scarf that he uses to tie them down with at night.

Is a master at finding filters on Instagram and Snapchat that don’t make your skin look Orange or pale so the two of you can have the cutest Instagram pictures together.

Walks around the house 24/7 singing 2000’s R&B songs at the top of his lungs because he’s a menace to society like that.

Supports all your financial needs when it comes to hair clothing or anything in general really. Need a new lace front? He’s wiring $700 to your account. Want a Teflar bag? He’s getting you one in every color. Some new shoes came out and you think they’re cute? He’s getting them for you !

REINER

Your aunties would L O V E a hardworking and burly man like Reiner.

He’s get so spoiled by them all the time whenever he comes around. Sometimes they pay attention to him more than they do you and best believe they slide him all the extra plates and desserts at barbecues. I just know he smacks down on a plate of soul food in like 5 minutes.

Speaking of soul food, you really lit up something in his Caucasian taste buds when you gave him a plate of soul food for the first time because now he’s OBSESSED. Every night he’s begging you to cook for him or asking you for the recipe so he can make it himself. His favorites are macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, and yams ☺️

Will bust a move on the dance floor if your family pressures him to get on it at events. He did a two-step with your aunt once at somebody’s wedding and nobody in your family has shut up about it since because they were surprised at how good he can dance. You were equally as surprised as them.

The best person to ask to help you with your hair because he’s so patient and will make sure that your parts are straight and perfect or use his hands to slick your ponytails up to the gods. He’ll do it exactly how you want it to look too and he makes sure it’s to your standard by checking in with you every now and then.

Encourages you to buy clips or little jewels whenever you take him to the beauty supply with you because he thinks you look so adorable when you wear them in your hair.

I’m glad you included that reminder text, because some player would definitely start some arguments about that. Thankfully, “until end of turn” stuff happens in cleanup, so there’s no real rules weirdness to skipping end steps (no more so than skipping upkeep steps), but it’s definitely a unique effect that feels at home on this card. The second ability should be an “if” since it’s a replacement effect, but that nitpick aside, it is such a cool ability. What better way to make players feel like they’re caught in a time loop than to have permanents constantly recurring themselves? Thanks to the two-turn delay, though, it’s still worth it to remove nasty threats to give yourself some breathing room. I don’t know if that flavor text was a reference or if you came up with it yourself, but either way, it really makes everything click in place. It’s a card I would readily toss into many of my decks.

Awaken the Ancients by @i-am-the-one-who-wololoes

I... cannot believe this effect hasn’t been done already. It’s so perfect! The main probably with most land animation spells is that you gotta tap lands to cast the spell, and a tapped land is a land that can’t attack. But CONVOKE! It fixes all those problems, assuming you have a big enough board. You tap the creatures instead of the lands, which would normally leave you with no board state, but oops all your lands swing in for massive damage because you didn’t have to tap any of them for mana! It’s a beautiful thing, and it works so well. Interestingly, I think you’ve used this art for a previous submission, long ago, which is pretty funny. Anyways, the one critique I have of this is that it may be a bit too good for what it is- convoke cards are typically more expensive than their regular counterparts, and turning your entire board of lands into 5/5s is no joke. I think it could be made more expensive, or if you wanted to push for a more interesting, fragile design, it could make the lands into 5/1s. Anyways, still a fantastic card.

Mind Break by @izzet-always-r-versus-u

We don’t really see many targeted Windfalls nowadays (or Windfalls at all, really), but this is a really solid take on one. It punishes the player for being greedy in more ways than one- if they were drawing a lot, they take a bunch of damage, and if they had all their good cards in hand, oops, not anymore! This is also a hilarious way to kill a player who has a hand bigger than their library. I do think you could have slotted in some very neat flavor text to really bring this one home. Also, I know it probably shouldn’t be an instant, because blah blah blah instant speed discard is bad, but... I kinda want it to be? I think it would be very fun, though it would stop someone’s turn in their tracks, so maybe too nasty. Anyways, love the card, love the art, well done.
