Nother HC/AU ramble about these two under the cut

Since these two basically have nothing about them it leaves me all the room I want to ramble about what I think their relationship would be✨

As I said in my original HC post, these two start off as rivals, Insomniac re challenging Samurai to a fight when he lost his winning streak to the new guy (Samurai) n got salty. Being they fought half drunk in a night club, things eventually got out of hand and a sword stab to a generator later both got electrocuted, messing up their heart beats. This put them as the perfect candidates for the new rhythm doctor program and what put them in the first chapter.

Samurai was fine when the program was used on him, but Insomniac’s much more effected heart beat (this is what you get for wearing no armor) ended up causing the development of the virus. It’s hard to explain but basically the rhythm doctor program’s ticking of the beats going down the line was Ai doing so and the Insomniac’s heart beat corrupted it into only following the extreme- creating the virus that separated itself from the original program. It’s not really malicious! It’s just trying to get people to follow the beats it was taught.. being really fucked up and possibly deadly beats but beats nonetheless.

Anyways, after Insomniac and Samurai got taken care of, Samurai continued having mild relapses each day, steady and predictable. Insomniac instead ended up stuck with extreme episodes that would appear in sudden bursts, first of these showing up in X-1N where future ones will likely only get worse as the virus Ai conforms more to being insane as he has episodes. A cycle of oh no.

In the meantime they have their own time to hang out n meet the other patients. Samurai being in the west for the first time has him curious about everything and everyone, just wanting to be a part of whatever was happening. Insomniac chose to be distant from the others to continue focusing his time on training but still had to get Samurai sometimes if he wanted to spar with someone. He always had some group with him, usually Logan and Hailey, on weekends it be Cole and Nicole. Insomniac doesn’t mind Cole n Nicole, they don’t bother him much and if they did have a question they weren’t dumb. The kids on the other hand he was probably exploding in his mind if they interrupted to ask if they could touch the sword.

Samurai and Insomniac also share a room for the sake of space and sparing. The only language they both know is English but it’s both their second language so most conversations are simple and dependent on their tone. Insomniac always talks about training or honor but Samurai is much more interested in talking about the new things he’s learned or discovered. Insomniac has been in the west for a few years now so can’t help but find it a bit childish and his demeaning view of Samurai isn’t helped when he finds out he’s not a fighter for his family or honor but just. Likes to sword fight. (insert “stop having fun” img here)

After X-1N, Insomniac was pretty shaken up to say the least. Without anyone else to open up he decided to be vulnerable and talked a bit about life to Samurai. Insomniac wondering what Samurai’s personal propose was if wasn’t fighting for anything. Samurai simply corrected Insomniac, he was fighting for something, his own fun and joy of experiencing life. Sword fighting just being one of his favorite deep outlets of this. Despite it being a bit corny and being said as Samurai was failing but continuing some crochet he wanted to learn, it did strike a bit of a cord with Insomniac.

Slowly Insomniac opened up to the others, placating the curiosity of the kids a bit, going to the cafe n trying the tea there while also teaching Nicole how to make some specialty ones he can make, and eventually when Samurai was talking about learning baseball, Insomniac took initiative and asked to join him. Samurai n Insomniac were finally able to come to a understanding with how the other thoughts and worked.

The first Big Test a neurologist may subject you to is... hand-holding.

Yes, literally, hand-holding (the doctor will have gloves on). Basically, among the many simple tests for neurological issues, checking whether or not your grip-strength in both hands is relatively equal is one of them. To do it, you're just asked to hold your neurologist's hands and squeeze as tight as you can with both hands at the same time.

Then, you extend your arms with your fingers outstretched, and your neurologist will ask you to try your best to keep your arms level as they slowly push down on each of your hands until your arms begin to lower. Again, this is to check if your coordination and strength are balanced normally.

Then, you touch your nose. It kinda feels like a sobriety test, which isn't too far off from the truth. An untreated epileptic brain can sometimes result in similar nervous depression as what you experience when you drink alcohol.

Your neurologist may have flash cards with different colorful pictures on them, like a tree, a house, a moon, and the sun. They'll show you all of the cards, give you a minute or two to try to memorize them, and then take them away and ask you to tell them which cards you can remember. Be honest. There is no such thing as a wrong answer with these tests; it is impossible to fail them. If you can only remember one card or can't remember any at all, that's vital information your doctor needs.

Depending on your situation, you may also be asked to take a set of very, very simple drawings of, say, a child assembling and flying a kite. The neurologist will then shuffle those drawings out-of-order and ask you to organize them chronologically to tell a story. This is another common cognitive test that seems childish, but can be vital (and is also meant so that children can comprehend them, because kids and non-verbal autistics sometimes need to get tested, too!)

The Big Test? Is called an EEG. An EEG is such an easy test that you're required to do it in your sleep. However, you may want to invest in stuff that's good at removing stuff like hair cement.

To begin with, you'll be called into a room that will have a big, noisy ventilation system set up in it. You may want to bring earbuds with you in order to block out the noise. This is also the lengthiest (and tedious) part.

See, in order to detect erratic brain activity (including seizures, night terrors, and sometimes sleep paralysis), a neurologist has to use a body-safe, long-lasting, ultra-tough glue to adhere small electrodes to your scalp. If you wear a weave, you're going to have to spend at least 24 hours without it. Depending on the style you wear, protective hairstyles like box braids may have to be undone, as the electrodes need to be able to touch your scalp with as little hair in the way as possible. Your neurologist will tell you if you need to do anything special with your hair before it's electrode-time.

The electrode-gluing process takes a while. For me, it took anywhere between 30-45 minutes or more depending upon the neurologist. The noisy ventilation system that will likely be in the room with you (mine looked like there was a jet turbine by my head) will come in handy in spite of the noise because the glue they use stinks to high hell - kind of like a mix between acetone and hair bleach. The vent will keep you and the doctor from gagging. Once the glue is dry, it's completely odorless.

The sensation is usually just like cold drops of hair gel on your scalp. There is absolutely no pain, and you get to sit back in a recliner or lie down entirely for the duration. You're asked to relax and occasionally turn your head so the doctor can see where they're gluing. There will be wires running down from the electrodes, so be careful not to yank on them (mostly because it hurts if you catch a wire and it yanks on the glue; it's very tough stuff). The wires attach to a receiver that will be attached to your clothes, like the waist your pants.

If you happen to accidentally drop an electrode or pull one out, write down the time and date that it happened and call your neurologist. It's not always necessary to go in and re-attach a single loose electrode, but it is crucial to note when it came loose so it doesn't mess with your test results and the person analyzing the data knows the lost electrode wasn't something weird happening in your brain.

Then you go home and have a regular day and go to bed. The data the doctor needs literally collects itself. After a day or two depending on the doctor's orders, you'll have your electrodes (but not the glue) removed and hear back. For me, it was about 2 weeks of waiting for results.

If you are stuck with the Glue of Doom, don't be an idiot like me and try to just get it out with determination, a comb, and regular conditioner. Treat it like bubblegum and apply oil like baby oil, olive oil, or coconut oil to the glue-spots. Massage the oil in and let it sit for a while, and then gently pick at the glue with a comb or toothbrush until it starts to come free. It can take a ridiculously long time to take out. I recommend running yourself a bath and bringing something like a laptop in with you so you can watch a movie while you clean your scalp up.

You may be asked for an MRI or CAT scan. An MRI is completely painless and non-invasive, and a lot of labs have special headphones you can wear while the test is going on so you can listen to music, as well as listen to the technicians if they have instructions or questions for you. A CT/CAT scan can be done with or without contrast dye. The version with dye does mean you'll need an IV, but allergic reactions are very rare to contrast dye and technicians are always prepared to stop a reaction in its tracks. As for the dye itself:

You will be able to smell/taste it. To me, it smelled and tasted like the smell of an old-fashioned pencil sharpener, which wasn't gross. It was just vaguely woody and metallic. The sensation goes away after an hour or two.*

It feels very warm, and to my experience and those of everyone I've met that's had a contrast CT, doesn't feel at all unpleasant. For example, my mother will ask any neurologist she happens to encounter for a free hit of contrast dye just because she likes how it feels. Even when the appointments were for me.

A contrast CT isn't likely to be necessary, however, as they're mostly used for body scans. You're more likely to get a CT scan in order to test for signs of stuff like making sure any internal sutures you may have been given after surgery are holding strong.

Aside from the dye, the most annoying thing about a CT scan is having to periodically hold your breath for a few seconds at a time so the picture comes out clear. Sometimes you may have to hold your arms upward in the air and out of the way of the scanner. That's about it.

"What if I'm diagnosed with epilepsy?" Please, please, please don't hide from treatment after diagnosis. Epilepsy and epileptic seizures destroy your brain and can kill. There are a wide variety of medications that stop seizures and double as anxiety meds, and so your neurologist can seriously help dial-in the right medication that suits you without causing you discomfort or negative side-effects.

Then, consider reaching out to someone like a therapist. Sometimes a diagnosis like epilepsy and adapting to the medications that treat it can be hard to fully reckon with, and there are a variety of therapists out there that specifically specialize in helping you cope with stuff like a major diagnosis. Additionally, communicating with a therapist and your neurologist can help identify what can agitate your epilepsy. Some people can't look at flashing lights, while others can have sensitivities to things like sound, or even how hot it is. My half-sister is also epileptic, and was diagnosed after she collapsed and seized because she'd been sweating outside on a very hot summer day on a family vacation.

More TFP Deep Thinking: Transformers and Road Safety

So, we have two episodes in TFP that touch on road safety concerns in regards to humans using/driving/riding in sentient vehicles: 

Road Safety Themed Episode Summaries: 

1) Speed Metal - Jack gets into street racing to beat a bully. Arcee initially enables it, Bumblebee does later after Jack and Miko both pressure him into it. 

This ends badly, with the bully being injured and needing to be rescued after being knocked out by Knock Out. 

2) Legacy - Smokescreen fails to care for human road rules in any way despite Jack trying his best to teach him how to drive on Earth; Because Jack is a teenager, he gives in to Smokescreen’s peer pressure and screws around after the bully returns. 

Smokescreen then gets called out for a mission, but not caring about human safety (probably due to an inability to internalise or appreciate just how dangerous this whole situation is for humans in general), he brings Jack along and it doesn’t go well. 

This is a long post, so I am putting it below a cut to spare everyone having to scroll for a mile: 

General Concerns About Sentient Vehicles in Practice: 

Because this is a kid’s show, ostensibly anyway, the bully is mostly fine at the end of Speed Metal, and Legacy depicts dangerous driving in a way that a young audience can internalise as “oh, that’s bad” as the episode ends with Arcee being furious with both Jack and Smokescreen. 

But they raise some pretty good points about just how dangerous the entire concept of being in a sentient vehicle actually is. 

I’m only going to focus on two main points here to prevent this from being the world’s longest post ever, but I do want to talk about them because they are common Transformers media themes and I think it’s interesting to think about the ramifications of some of this stuff in-universe as well as from a more realistic point of view. 

The Humans Involved are Mostly Children and Teenagers

All of the humans involved in these episodes are children/teens, which adds a new level of horror to all of us who are watching it as adults. 

I used to work in education and social care for at-risk youth, and we did actually have some cases of kids getting hurt in reckless driving/illegal driving situations, so I’m naturally a little more sensitive to this whole topic altogether. 

We do see Fowler and June get thrown around a bit, but I’m going to focus on the kids, because doing this kind of shit with children involved is inherently more dangerous and scary. 

1) Being children, they don’t have any driving experience. 

Jack does, but primarily/only on a motorcycle from what we see on the show as far as I remember, and even then, he’s a teenager in high school and we can assume he hasn’t been driving for very long overall. 

So to kids/young people, who are overwhelmingly more familiar and comfortable with being passengers rather than drivers (even Jack only has probably a couple years of driving experience due to his age regardless of how much confidence he has behind the wheel), the idea of being in an uncontrollable vehicle able to do whatever it wants with you inside of it is sort of a nightmare! 

When something goes wrong and you lose control of your car in real life, it’s scary as hell even with years of experience driving. 

For example, when hitting ice on the road, your car starts to spin out or starts drifting, there’s no traction, and you have to get your shit together quickly. 

I have experienced that several times myself, and it sucks. It is massively scary, every single time, and that is when you still have some modicum of control over your vehicle. 

Now imagine if your car instantly became totally uncontrollable and no input or activity you could possibly perform would resolve the dangerous situation, because your vehicle itself is the dangerous situation. 

Now imagine you are also a child with zero driving experience, who implicitly trusted that your vehicle would drive safely and via the intended route, suddenly thrown into a situation where shit has changed and the vehicle is now doing things that you cannot predict and cannot alter or prevent in any way. 

There’s no way they could ever touch on this seriously in TFP or any other Transformers media because it has potential to be genuinely frightening to the target young audience demographic if depicted in certain ways, and it would sort of be show-breaking because of the potential impact of that kind of fear on the human characters within the show (at the very least). 

But this shit is scary, and even moreso for young kids. I was in a pretty terrifying couple of car/road incidents as a kid, and I remember the feeling of being completely shit scared while the windows cracked and shattered, the muffler was ripped out of the bottom of the car, and we were pinned between two big rigs (cargo and oil tanker) on the highway at 65 MPH at night. 

I can’t help but think of the TFP kids being put in a situation where they’re all driving convoy style away from Decepticons for whatever reason, and while they are in their respective guardian’s alt-modes, they get shoved up against Optimus at high speed... 

I’m telling you, it’s a trauma factory. 

2)  A Transformer could just decide to do anything. Whenever. 

This is obvious, but let me break it down in more detail: 

A particularly unsettling moment in Speed Metal is when Jack is riding on Arcee, and they pull up to a light-- And Jack’s school bully makes some snide comments which set off Arcee, so she peels out at high speed from what looks to be a four way intersection. 

It’s worth noting that Jack is more level headed than Arcee about it here, for the most part. He even questions her actions, calling her out for violating her own road safety rules. She disregards him, saying “just this once”. YIKES. 

I’d like to point out that she does some seriously dangerous high speed manoeuvres in that scene, including a left side overtake while accelerating to attempt to mitigate wheel skipping and any lost speed from lateral drag that puts Jack inches in front of a high speed car: 

Now, arguably, if need be she could have transformed and prevented any major collision/injury, but keep in mind the bully is a civilian and having to remain secret is a consideration; Any hesitation here could result in casualties, and that concern may well cause hesitation in deciding to transform or not. 

And on top of that, is putting Jack in this position in the first place a good idea, even knowing a Transformer is extremely likely to out perform a human vehicle even without transforming? Hell no, and here’s why: 

He is riding Arcee like any other motorcycle; He’s just holding on and hoping for the best at this point in the street race. 

He could easily fall and roll off, because he’s not able to tilt his weight into any of the turns or effectively prepare for anything Arcee is doing. Look at the angle in that one screenshot above; Jack’s doing a hell of a job just trying to stay seated, and the sudden strain on his left leg/hip has to be pretty uncomfortable. 

Motorcycles do not have seatbelts, unless they are specialty gear, and even if Arcee’s alt-mode does have some way to secure a rider, Jack absolutely did not have them engaged as this ride did not start out as a street race and I do not recall seeing anything that suggests Arcee has engaged any type of seatbelt or other additional rider safety measure here.

I’ve both ridden and driven motorcycles before, and the idea of doing so at high speed with an uncontrolled, unpredictable motorcycle (or driver if I am passenger) is frightening. There’s no way to know when to adjust your position/balance, grip, or anything. Jack isn’t manually controlling anything, his hands are off the controls on the handlebars because those are Arcee’s functions. 

So she just hauls off, high speed, and does extremely sharp weaving turns in close proximity to another high speed vehicle-- Because a human teenager was talking shit to them at a stoplight. 

It’s not responsible guardian behaviour, and this is somewhat called out in this episode and again more heavily in Legacy, but uh, there’s a lot of reckless Transformer driving with humans involved in this franchise in general, and this is a more blatantly unnecessary example.

And the thing is, Arcee is fairly serious and strict. She is a mature person and typically handles road safety well when it comes to Jack and the other children. Yet, she still ends up encouraging street racing. 

Cybertronians don’t typically fully seem to grasp humanity or our realistic limitations as a species, and while most of them do generally try their best to avoid problems or injuries of any humans they work with, there are plenty of situations and conversations throughout all Transformers media that sort of emphasises as a running theme that they really don’t 100% internalise that yes, this shit is wildly dangerous for humans. Like, all of it.

Arcee was doing manoeuvres that I’m sure she could recover from if they went poorly. But could Jack? No, and she wasn’t fully considering that in this moment.

Unfortunately, although Arcee handwaves it as “just this once”, it only takes once for this to result in serious injury or death. A dumbass teenager managed to goad her into risking Jack’s safety for the sake of beating said dumbass teenager.

Even the most mature and strict Cybertronians are prone to screwing around now and then. 

The more familiar they are with humans, the more lax they generally seem to get about keeping an eye on measuring out what they do in accordance to human tolerances and limitations. 

We sometimes see this in reverse, which is kind of how this is handled in TFP; After this episode, in Legacy, she digs into Jack and Smokescreen brutally. So at least she learned something. 

But Cybertronians are people, and they are still people in alt-mode, and no person is ever perfect.

Sometimes, your giant space robot guardian is going to turn into a car, let you get in, and then ten minutes later you are going at brutal speeds barely missing instant death every other second because another space robot called them a weenie or something.

Everyone gets mad sometimes, and does dumb shit. The thing is, “just this once” is not acceptable when driving with a much more delicate human. 

The same thing applies in real life; No adult worth shit would ever risk driving dangerously with a younger person in/on the vehicle with them. 

But people are people, and people still do dumb shit sometimes. And sometimes that dumb shit has a body count. It is unfortunately human, and apparently Cybertronian, nature.

Profile and How they Treat You (Part 2) - Mafia NCT

Masterlist Part 1

Renjun (Medic in training) Just like other members, when he first joined, he was taken straight to Winwin for training. However, his attention wasn’t there and he’d always come running in late after talking to Kun about medical related issues. Kun and Winwin had both advised Taeyong of Renjun’s interests and after some consideration, Renjun was moved to train with Kun as a medic. His sessions with Kun mainly involve continuous practicing for procedures and memorising methods as he struggles to recall things under pressure. Renjun is unable to control his emotions when so many members come back injured causing him to lose focus.

Jeno (Fighter - Hand to hand) Like Winwin, his main forte is hand to hand combat. He’ll have daily training sessions practicing new techniques with Winwin and occasionally they’ll sneak up on each other to test each other’s speed. His competitive nature pushes his ability up as he forces himself to become even better than he can be. During missions he’ll depend more on his martial art practice rather than guns and so he prefers to be in close proximity before attacking. For that reason, he does a lot of running and practices short distant sprinting.

Jeno is always dragging you outside the house with him to go do all these random things like indoor trampolining or rock climbing. He’ll make you come outside for runs with him in the early mornings, physically dragging you out of bed while you cling onto the frame of the bed. It’s just never a simple day when you’re with him.

Haechan (Disguises and Undercover specialist) His part of the job requires him to steal identities meant for business but he prefers to use his skills for his own benefit. He produces passports for Jungwoo who requires them the most when going undercover, company ID’s to get past security for certain businesses and of course, a simple fake ID to get the dreamies into clubs or bars. For bigger scale missions he’ll pull out boxes of costumes, prosthetics and wigs. If you look in his wallet, he can bring out over 5 different fake ID’s and licences for himself including a police badge, government worker ID, NIS ID (national intelligence service) and more. Haechan also works as an undercover specialist watching targets or suspicious people from behind the scenes. His fake licences allow him to change between different types of companies including the enemy’s business, watching their moves as an innocent civilian or befriending them to gain information.

Haechan is more impulsive when it comes to arguing, always trying to get the last word in between the two of you. Most of the disagreements are about being sore losers in games between the 00 liners, including yourself and it annoys everyone in the house. In the few times the two of you have fought harshly, Jaehyun has had to step in and separate the two of you. But if you’re not fighting then he’s clinging onto you 24/7. - Very affectionate - Impulsive over-protective

Jaemin (Fighter - long distance) Jaemin always knows where everyone is, what they’re doing and where they’ve been. He is aware of everyone’s positions during missions making sure they aren’t within range of explosives. He sets timers for bombs once the boys have infiltrated the buildings or before infiltrations. He’s also experienced with disarming explosives so if anyone sets traps or wires, Jaemin is usually the first to notice. However, if the task doesn't involve explosives or anything, he’ll be on rooftops or in the opposite buildings of the mission. He’s the sniper of NCT, being highly trained with long distances. His position is important within missions as he often observes from the outside with eyes on the target. - Explosives, fires, chemicals good with anything

Chenle (Fighter – Guns) Extremely loud boy screaming all the time and 2x worse when combined with Jisung. Whenever Chenle and Jisung are practicing in the shooting range, everyone leaves the room. The yelling war between the two boys outpowers the sounds of the bullets being shot. Their practice sessions are always a competition and the earmuffs make it impossible for them to hear each other so it’s just a bunch of, “DID YOU SEE THAT?” “DID YOU SAY SOMETHING?” “WHAT?”. Chenle’s mainly trained with guns though, quick with disarming a gun and quick with loading. He’s been practicing since he was a child so automatically, his position was a given within the group.

Jisung (Hacking) His position is somewhat similar to Doyoung’s, however, this kid’s specialty is hacking. He loves the contrast between the white pixels against the black as all the URLs and fragments of code fill the screens. The feeling of accomplishment after each challenge brings a smile over his seemingly innocent face.

You can find this boy stuck in his seat 24/7 in front of any screened device. His room is filled with old computer desktops that he’s been too busy to get rid of, cause they “technically still work�� he claims. He just wanted the latest versions of everything. So he switched desktops almost every few months. He has like 3 desktops spaced out across his desk which is considered minimal in comparison to his desk at HQ.

In the middle of the night when Taeyong’s checking the rooms of the younger boys, Jisung’s tucked himself underneath his covers, pretending to snore loudly. When the clock strikes 2am his sitting at his desk; glasses on, headphones on with a mic connected, and a cup of ramen beside him. On one screen he’ll have his game and the other two? It’ll be from his task Taeyong had given to him, expected for tomorrow’s meeting. He’ll be busy switching from one screen to another as the decoding program works its magic and he swings around to his game.

The Wizard of Oz: Facets of Filmmaking

While The Wizard of Oz is often remembered as a magical experience, the making of this masterpiece was anything but.

Nothing went smoothly.  Not screenwriting, not directing, not shooting, not casting, not even costuming went well, made even worse by the end result of box office bomb when it was released.  It’s hard to imagine a timeless classic coming out of a production as big a wreck as this was.

You guessed it, today, we’re unpacking the behind-the-scenes story of The Wizard of Oz, taking a look at a brief history of events with plenty of trivia.  Buckle up, this one is going to be rough.

Let’s dive in, shall we?

The problems in production started immediately with something rather important: the screenwriting.  While there are three official writers, (Noel Langley, Edgar Allen Woolf, and Florence Ryderson) there is a whopping total of fifteen additional writers that remain uncredited.  Everyone was contributing their own ideas and the end result had to be trimmed down considerably to be anywhere close the film we know now.

First, let’s talk about Noel Langley.

A writer of bestselling novels, it didn’t take long for Langley to get a job in Hollywood.  By the time he was chosen to work on The Wizard of Oz, he already had multiple scripts under his belt.  As scriptwriter, his other job was to adapt the original novel, and in so doing contributed some of the major changes that would go on to help define the film, such as the ruby slippers, the dream ending, and the idea of the Kansas Kounterparts.

Unfortunately, he also contributed a lot of other things that were decidedly less helpful, introducing new elements and characters that didn’t fit well with the overall story, such as the Cowardly Lion being originally a man turned into a lion.  Other changes included adding a princess, prince and dragon, the Flying Monkeys being heroic, Aunt Em being a cruel, hard woman who was responsible for wanting Toto put down, and worst of all, a severe trimming of Dorothy’s screentime.  (?!?)

Convinced he was finished, Langley turned in his script in June of 1938.

MGM had other plans.

Cue the damage control team: Edgar Allen Woolf and Florence Ryderson. Their job: cut away the weird stuff in Langley’s script, while retaining the dialogue.

Did it work?

Mostly.

Apparently Woolf and Ryderson got a little carried away with their editing, ending with another incongruous mess of a script.  Getting desperate, MGM called Langley back to edit the edit of his original script.  Langley immediately began to pull out as much of the Woolf and Ryerson edits as he possibly could before MGM announced that it was finished.  The script was taken out of Langley’s hands again, and turned over to production.  Revisions took care of the rest, slowly working the script into the story that we know and love today.

Casting didn’t go much better.

After failing to get Gale Sondergaard or Edna Mae Oliver as their Wicked Witch, MGM turned to Margaret Hamilton, who was an enormous fan of the original book.  Hamilton, as a single mother, was concerned about working hours, and got into an argument with the studio over guaranteed work time, accepting the role of the Wicked Witch three days before filming was supposed to start.  Her original contract of five weeks of work turned into a long, arduous three months, during which she suffered severe burns during the Wicked Witch’s fireball exit from Munchkinland.  (Watch the scene in the movie, the smoke is a little early and the trapdoor a little visible; it’s the rehearsal footage.)  After her recovery, she refused to do any more stunts. As a result, during the ‘Surrender Dorothy’ scene, her stunt double was seriously burned herself.  On top of that, Hamilton couldn’t eat in costume due to the copper in her makeup, and her skin was tinged green for weeks after filming.

The problems didn’t stop with the villain.  The original casting for the Scarecrow and Tin Man wasn’t easy either.

Buddy Ebsen was the original choice for the Scarecrow, and Ray Bolger was initially cast as the Tin Man.  Bolger, a huge fan of the Scarecrow (Fred Stone) from 1902 stage adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, asked to trade roles. This went fine for Bolger, (clearly) but Ebsen?  Not so much.

It turned out during filming that Ebsen had a severe reaction to the aluminum powder used in the makeup, landing him in the hospital.  MGM scrambled for a new Tin Man and, after re-designing the makeup using less dangerous metallic greasepaint, ended up with Jack Haley.  Even so, it was still a struggle.  As the scenes were all shot on MGM lots in Hollywood, (not a single outdoor shot in the film!) it was beastly hot due to the intense stage-lighting, which also caused problems with costuming.  Bolger, while being able to eat (liquids) in the makeup, had to wear a rubber mask that cut off moisture and air, causing his skin to crack and bleed.  The mask left a pattern on his face that took over a year to fade after filming.  Bert Lahr’s lion costume (made of real lion skin) was a problem as well.  Costume designers made two identical suits for him due to the extreme heat; while he soaked one in sweat, the other suit was being dried. In-between shots, he had to remove his entire costume to stand in front of a fan just to avoid heatstroke.  On top of that, he couldn’t eat anything except through a straw, as anything more involved would have meant more time in the makeup chair to work on the face appliances.  Meanwhile, Jack Haley, their replacement Tin Man, was unable to sit down due to the makeup, being forced to lean to rest.  He also suffered an eye-infection due to the makeup.

Even the main lead had it rough.  MGM went through a few names before settling on Judy Garland (Shirley Temple and Deanna Durbin).  16 year-old Garland not only had her chest bound painfully tight to appear as a pre-teen girl, but also originally was put into a frumpier dress than seen in the final film, as well as being blonde for a short period of time.  During production she was also put into tacky baby-doll makeup that was thankfully changed, and perhaps most unfortunately, the iconic ruby slippers were extremely painful to wear, to the point where Garland only wore them in shots where they would be visible.  The rest of the time, she wore black shoes, which not only cut down on her pain, but also protected the slippers from wear and tear.

This was all made worse by the fact that hours were from 4 AM to 8 PM on a short day.

If you think that was a mess, wait until you hear about the director problems.

So The Wizard of Oz was obviously a little different than usual behind-the-scenes, and that extended to its director, or in this case, directors. During the course of production, MGM assigned no less than five total (main) directors to this movie.  Let’s start with the first one, announced in June of 1938: Norman Taurog.

Taurog was a former child actor turned director, winning the Oscar for directing Skippy in 1931.  He knew the game and how to play it, being the youngest man to ever win an Oscar for directing, and having over 180 movies to his name.  He seemed like an obvious choice, right?

He was out in two months.  During this time, the crew finished initial casting and set-construction, but no actual shooting was done.  Taurog was replaced by a man named Richard Thorpe, under whom shooting began. Twelve days later, Thorpe was out too, and everything filmed during his tenure was scrapped and reshot later. (He was the one responsible for Judy Garland’s ludicrous baby-doll makeup.)

Next on the scene was George Cukor, whose job it was to get the film’s look closer to what we’d be more familiar with later.  Cukor was a very famous and successful director with MGM, good with both musicals and adaptations.  He re-designed Dorothy’s appearance, told Garland to ‘just be herself’, and was promptly removed from production after one week, sent to work on MGM’s other big project: Gone with the Wind.

Enter the best-known and most often credited director for this film: Victor Fleming.

Fleming was an experienced director, and turned out to be exactly what this movie needed to keep afloat.  Despite the fact that most of the cast accidents happened during his three-and-a-half month tenure, Fleming miraculously calmed the storm, shooting from November 1st in 1938 to February 17th of 1939, until he too was shuttled off of the production: being moved to finish directing Gone with the Wind after the departure of former Oz director George Cukor. Fleming remains the only director credited on the actual movie itself.

Only the scenes in Kansas were left.  Last, but not least, director King Vidor stepped up to the plate, filling in the remaining months until showtime.  Vidor, another well-known Hollywood director with almost eighty movies under his belt, joined the team for the final stretch.  He was responsible for the brown-and-white sepia look for Kansas, and in a way, having another director for those scenes worked out pretty well, as the sequences in Kansas and the sequences in Oz were supposed to be very different.  (Miscellaneous other scenes were directed by producer Mervyn LeRoy, whose idea it was to make this movie in the first place.  All total, we’re looking at around five or six directors for this movie.)

In the end, Fleming got the credit for both The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind, despite the revolving-door directing that both films experienced, but then again, that was a part of MGM.

In the 1930s, MGM was the undisputed king of the movies, and The Wizard of Oz came along at their peak. In fact, being made by MGM was probably the only thing that saved it.  With a tagline like ‘More stars than there are in heaven’, they could afford to put rising star Judy Garland in center stage among an all-star cast. Their specialties were big-budget extravaganzas, movie experiences that often used the brand new way to make the visuals pop: Technicolor.  

MGM was not only used to wowing audiences, it was good at it.

In the era of the Depression, escapism at the movies was the way to go, and this studio in particular knew how to use their methods: glamourous films filled with glamorous people, whose problems, if they had any, were far, far away from the problems actually dealt with by people at the time.  The formula worked, and the studio generated film after film like this.  With a decent success rate, MGM could afford to shuffle directors and screenwriters around.  Only through MGM was The Wizard of Oz even possible.

In the end, despite the hardship and the close calls (Somewhere Over the Rainbow was almost cut from the final film!), The Wizard of Oz was released in August of 1939, and went on to be one of the most famous and well-loved films of all time, and deservedly so.  Originally greenlit to try to follow in the footsteps of the first animated success at a little company run by Walt Disney, The Wizard of Oz became the most iconic movie of all time, standing on its own for eighty years.  Not bad for a box office bomb and production nightmare.

his whole family is blessed with magic save for a few who didn’t get the gene but every family reunion they all dote on jin and talk about how powerful he’s become and how proud they are of him

the coven house where all of the boys stay is actually jin’s ancestor’s home from a long time ago

the place has brought up witches of all generations and jin was very eager to inherit it

while there’s definitely a lack of witches he’s been able to recruit, he loves his family of six so it doesn’t really bother him

he acts like he’s all serious but in reality he’s always casting spells on the youngins as tests (read: for fun)

jimin: why tf did you give me green skin

jin: if you had been paying attention during lessons you would know how to fix it :)

has definitely said this out of context more than once: ”any witch worth a broom handle knows how to get rid of poisonous snakes! you know back in my day…”

wears the flashiest outfits, but little do people know that they’re all homemade. he has a serious creative eye and seeks to make what simple human designers wish they could (taehyung is very eager to learn this talent from him)

goes all out on halloween with this talent too, creating uber realistic costumes

he doesn’t spend his time learning everything about it like namjoon

and he’s not playful with it like jimin and jin

yoongi just… acknowledges it. its like it exists as something he can do and he’s proud but he doesn’t really care if that makes sense

most of his friends outside of the coven are human too and he has no reservations about telling them what he is bc if they cause trouble he is more than prepared to take care of it

they’re usually like “wow so cool! i wish i was a witch” but yoongi really doesn’t care lmao

with or without magic, yoongi is the same: he loves music, he loves making music, and he loves being a musician

yoongi, however, is guilty of having used magic to make his music just right before

sometimes a note just doesn’t sit with him right and it’s driving him insane

or maybe the bass doesn’t hit hard enough

he charms his music in a way that when one listens to it, they feel exactly what yoongi wants them to feel

people are always telling him he has a real gift in music and while he most certainly does, he feels he has to give credit to his magic for helping him along sometimes

but then seokjin will be like “isn’t magic your talent too? aren’t you just exercising it when you charm your music? it’s not like you can only make music well. you should give yourself props for your magic too”

it’s just. weird to him because he’s seen how much magic can corrupt people in much higher positions than himself and it’s Terrifying

he wants to know that no matter what he makes, it’s his and his alone, not attributed to any otherworldly advantage

this just kind of contributes to his need to be as detached from magic as possible

he’s too cheap to buy one of those coffee makers that automatically start brewing at a certain time in the morning and just uses magic to do it instead

“yoongi do you want me to buy you a new coffee maker for your birthday? they have ones that do all the work for you now-” “no”

he has to be extra, okay namjoon

jimin teases him sometimes but yoongi knows it’s all out of love

jimin understands yoongi in a way, and while the others are always like “yoongi you should have more fun with your magic!” jimin is always like “no no no, let him be”

besides yoongi could probably smoke all of them in a battle of magic if it came down to it lol

hoseok is probably one of the most talented witches in the coven

hoseok is a perfectionist to a t so if he feels insecure about how he’s doing a certain spell he will do it over and over and over until he’s got it right which makes him a pretty formidable opponent

like even the boys wouldn’t go up against him bc they know they’re just gonna get their ass handed to them

he’s a sweetie tho and very light-hearted and he never lets his power get to his head

he mainly uses it to bother the others tbh
